★★★★★ “A truly magical experience… the cast members are outstanding” West End Best Friend
Malvolio runs the Lady Olivia’s house with puritanical zeal. By day, strict order is maintained and repeated advances from Olivia’s many admirers are firmly rebuffed. But after dark, wine flows freely and Olivia’s lady-in-waiting Maria is planning to settle old scores. When a shipwreck washes up two strangers, the scene is set for a comedy of romantic chaos.
Oliver Ford Davies, one of the leading Shakespearean actors of his generation, returns to the OT to play Malvolio, opposite Jane Asher as Maria. Patricia Allison (Sex Education) plays Viola, alongside OT favourites Clive Francis as Toby Belch, Robert Mountford as Andrew Aguecheek, and Dorothea Myer‑Bennett as Olivia.
OT Artistic Director Tom Littler directs a 1940s-set production of Shakespeare’s heartrending and hilarious masterpiece of mistaken identities and secret desires.

This was Jane's panto debut.
I always thought that Douglas Byng, a very famous panto actor who played mostly female/women characters, was Cinderella, but maybe he was the fairy goodmother or the step-mother!)
Jane's bio:
….Jane Asher
It seems incredible that Jane Asher is not yet seventeen. Already she has packed into her short career enough highlights to satisfy an actress twice her age. Three times she has played lesding roles in the West End, the latest and most notable being “Wendy” in “Peter Pan” at the scala last Christmas. Of the long list of celebrated actresses who have won this role Jane has the distinction of being the youngest. Her youthfulness gained her another “first” in that most modern medium, television. She was the youngest actress to play the time-honoured role of “Juliet” professionally, when “Romeo and Juliet” was presented for schools recently. And she must be the youngest regular panel member of popular “Juke Box Jury”. But it was in films that she made her debut, as a five- year-old. The past was that of “Nina”, a deaf mute child; the film the unforgettable “Mandy”. Since then she has taken important roles in seven feature films including “Greengage Summer” and “The Prince and the Pauper”. Her current appearance at the New Theatre marks up yet another “first” for Jane, too. It is her first appearance in traditional pantomime. I wager to suggest that it will not be her last and that in years to come modest Miss Asher will twinkle with refreshing brightness on the English theatrical horizon.
Hey Cinderella
Jane Asher playing the title role in ‘Cinderella’ at New Theatre, Bromley, December 1962/January 1963. One of her last big gigs before she got caught up in the storm of Beatlemania. “So, what have you been in recently?”

STARRY-EYED FAREWELL TO A BEATLE: She won't see Paul McCartney for a month
… which is not, however, the reason for the soulful look borne by Miss Asher on the left. Her friend, Beatle Paul McCartney, is off to the Bahamas to make the second Beatle film; but Miss Asher has been keeping her mind off lonely thoughts by doing some filming herself. She plays that intense girl Maggie Tulliver in a four-part B.B.C. TV serial version of George Eliot's harrowing novel "The Mill on the Floss", the first part of which is screened tomorrow evening. In it, Miss Asher is storm-crossed, gale-swept, and torn by the conflicting demands of family love and the other sort. Which accounts for her expression (and her hairstyle) when she was photographed filming. At 18 she has some big films behind her, considerable acting talent, and a Beatle as a boy friend. What girl could ask for more?
