Donyale's story was really sad. it's too bad she didn't feel that just being black was good enough. funny you said black ppl of that time period were delusional. i've heard some say the same about marsha huntand how she calls herself "melaninaign" instead of just black.
Yes, Donyale was delusional because the modeling world was very racist. European features and pale skin were trendy, especially if they were foreign, like Swedish or French. Donyale told multiple photographers she was Spanish, Italian and etc, so they would photograph her. In the end, photographers knew she wasn't mixed and still wanted to photograph her anyway. She was the first black supermodel. No one would ever let her forget she was black, even when she was saying her real name was Donyale when actually it was Peggy.
Isn't Melanin the same as saying black, tho? Marsha never denied her background or her race. Actually, she was the FACE of Black is Beautiful starting in 1968. She conquered England just like Donyale did. Marsha had a tough time with press after having Karis (they noticed she was mixed close to fair skinned in her early years of age) so often she would get harassed by people about who the father was. Marsha stuck her ground and didn't have to prove she was black. She wore a huge afro.

I will check cause I think I have this scan somewhere.
Ophelia
Little by little I found more information about Jane’s 1977 Opehlia play.
Ophelia is a character in William Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet. She is a young noblewoman of Denmark, the daughter of Polonius, sister of Laertes, and potential wife of Prince Hamlet.
Ophelia was written by C. P. Taylor and was directed by Nicholas Kent and the costume designer and theatre set was by Poppy Mitchell.
Acting alonside Jane there was, as far as I know, Moira Redmond (and some male actors, including one playing the role of Hamlet).
The production was by either (or both) the National Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse, and they toured for some UK cities, performing at the Oxford Playhouse, Oxford, U.K. (1977), Twyford, Hampshire (1977), Cottlestoe Theatre (15th October – ? 1977), and The Gardner Arts Centre, University of Sussex, Brighton (15th – 19th November 1977).
Here there is the scan of this article (including a pic of Jane, but you have to pay to get it larger! I mean, the site says that there is a free trial but in order to register you have to add your credit card number…).
And here a pdf of another newspaper with a picture of the play (last page) and some of the info posted here (I’ve saved the pic and now I’m trying to resize it).
Further information and pics, of this play and any other, is always welcomed!
