James Siriusâs love language is âacts of provocation.â He doesnât stop until he drives Albus crazy because thatâs the only way he can get his attention. His brother is completely focused on pretending he doesnât exist, and James is just as stubborn. Heâs the one who always goes after Albus at Hogwarts. Most people forget theyâre even brothers; James is super popular, and Albus is a total loser. But James makes a point of yelling âLittle brother!â in the middle of the common room or from his broomstick whenever he spots Albus trying to hide in the crowd at a Quidditch match, just to see him want to sink into the ground out of embarrassment. Heâs also the one who causes a massive scene outside the Slytherin dormitory until Albus finally gives up and comes out to deal with him.

Hehehehe okay so what if you like wrote a fic about remus lupin x reader. The reader is a teacher (preferably like astronomy) and they're sneaking around together. students are making bets and stuff to see if they'll end up together, some girls just ship them really hard.
They're trying so hard to keep it a secret but they are so bad at it.
Me @ every guy who isn't a fictional wizard from the 70s ^^
An: This fluff attempt goes out to you, rip
Rumors
Remus Lupin x Fem!Reader
cw: A lot of kisses and cursing, stapler mishandling
Masterlist
WC:4181
The halls of Hogwarts were filled with hushed whispers and mindless patter of gossip. The newest topic of the year?Â
Professor {L/N}, the newest astronomy hire. An Alchemist who perfected her work through star charting. Lupin had recommended you for the post to assist Sinistra. Mostly, however, you were hired on to assist with the newest project under Dumbledore. With your studies in the North Pole, you were tasked with on and off communications with the centaur herd within the Forbidden Forest. Specifically, their astronomy masters. It was easy, given your track record with magical creatures. Creating a bridge of mutual understanding between the professors and the herd. Dumbledore also saw you valuable to both potions and alchemy class; meaning you met a lot of students very fast.
So almost everyone knew you, you ran a tight ship in class, playful and respectful to the students paired with a charming personality, no one could bring themselves to even hate you.
That's probably how the rumors began, truthfully. Who doesn't want their two favorite teachers to end up together?
Much like Lupin, the students adored you. Hermione especially, after learning of your academic achievements of the past, while being a muggleborn witch.Â
Your first reaction to seeing him probably don't help. First few steps into your new place of employment and you hurry over to the only face you cared to recognize, and give him a hug and a thank you for the recommendation.Â
It wasn't anything big and it wasn't anything of a spectacle, but Merlin, was Hogwarts boring. The thrill of gossip seemed to have every student in a choke hold. Some said you were both childhood friends turned lovers, some said you were married and it was a scandalous affair, most of the rumors were just students talking about how perfect you both fit together.Â
Your caring, funny, and nurturing behavior, to his stern more rugged form of bonding, you were affectionately dubbed âmum and dad.âÂ
Never to your face however, and mostly by the first and seventh years. Something about growing shame and losing it in your final days of Hogwarts, remarkable.
~~~
âI'm telling you! He looks at her like she is the very stars she teaches us about!â A seventh year sighed dreamily with her friends. She had her chin in her palms and was staring up at the front of class while a few of their classmates took the practical exam. âI wish someone would look at me like that.â
âReally! I haven't seen so much tension between two faculty before! I wouldn't be surprised to find them snogging in the halls!â One of them joked and the other girls laughed.
âTruly, but I saw Professor {L/N} wearing a wedding ring. She took it off and put it in her pocket before class started. I wonder if they are, you know~ Never have I seen Professor Lupin wear one.â She wiggled her eyebrows and the original girl spoke up with a gasp.
âOh don't you say that! Professor Lupin and Professor {L/N} would never!â She tutted and another voice chimed in, a boy from a seat behind them, making the three turn.
âI heard that they spent Christmas at school together.â Cedric cheeked and the three girls gasped and began to murmur among themselves about it, before Lupin clapped his hands.
He found it a bit amusing, he had let them continue that far. This is what his classes have become, listening to the students muttering about him and you, seeing how close they could possibly get to the truth. Remus, at a fault, was a gossip. He learned to love the thrill of rumors from Sirius and James, but what was better than rumors about you and a colleague? Rumors about you and a colleague that were so close to the truth.
âRight now! Who's next?â
The rest of the class went smoothly, everyone finished their exams and the classroom began to file out. As Lupin got comfortable in his seat, his door peaked open.
âIf you are here for tutoring, please note my hours are posted on the door, this first hour has been reserved already.â Lupin called out from his chair, head leaned back.Â
âTutoring, hm?â A song-like voice rang out from the door. He slowly smirked and leaned forward, eyes locking onto yours. You were holding a box of Merlin knows what, walking straight up to his desk with that beautiful smile.Â
âIs that so unbelievable?â He teased, voice lower as he stood up and walked around his desk. Looking over your shoulder to peek into the box, seeing several random objects, including a stapler, a retractable ruler, a metal pointing stick, and other random muggle things.
âOh, totally. I think I remember you almost lost it when Peter asked for your notes.â You teased him and he chuckled, his breath brushing against your neck. He admired the way you seemed to not flinch, but melt into his proximity.Â
âPeter was a terrible student.â He mumbled and you laughed, his hand slipping around your waist and leaning down to kiss the side of your neck. You laughed harder and squirmed away.Â
âHands to yourself. Now, show me where I can hide this contraband.â You lifted the box and shook it a bit. âThe things they allow in muggle schools! Hmph!â You mused and he laughed, walking you up to his office and to the far back near a storage closet. He opened the door for you and you set the box down, looking around curiously.
The room was small, but big enough for four people to stand in it comfortably. The walls were covered in shelves filled with items from all over the school years, you ran your finger along one of the shelves and let the dust collect.
âWhat's on your mind, hm?â Lupin mused and you turned to smirk at him.
âJust wondering where they are hiding the really bad stuff. Still in Filtchâs closet?â You hummed as he stepped into the small room with you. His eyes looked you over and you gave him a look.
âWhy's that, darling?â
âJust curious, out of all the things in that closet,â You hummed as Remus wrapped his arms around your middle and pulled you against him. Your fingers dancing along his shirt collar. âWonder how many of them were from you and that little gang of yours.â You hummed and he laughed.
Leaning down, he pressed his lips to yours. It was chaste and sweet. He loved moments like this, away from everyone, where he could love you properly. He gave a hum as you got on your toes and wrapped your arms around his shoulders, pulling him down as he pulled you closer.
~~~
âI truly don't think they have something going on. It's maddening really! The whole school seems to see it but me!â Ron groaned as he walked down the hall with Harry and Hermione, seemingly offended at the idea that the new Astronomy teacher was dating or even had interest in Lupin.
"I wouldn't put too much stock in rumors about someone's love life, Ronald," Hermione retorted, rolling her eyes.
âYeah, sorry Ron, but you're kind ofâŚâ Harry rolled his wrists and Ron narrowed his eyes.
âKind of what?âÂ
âKind of..â Harry trailed off.
âKind of a complete idiot when it comes to love.â Hermione finally snapped, hugging her books to her chest. âNow, if you'll excuse me, I have to meet Professor Lupin.â She huffed and stomped off.
Ron was left standing there like an idiot, looking over at Harry.Â
âWhat did I do?â
Harry tried to hide his smile and patted Ron's shoulder to urge him along and out of the halls.
~~~
The kiss had grown a bit heated, Remus pushed you deeper into the closet as he muttered about how badly he needed to have you in his arms. How much he loved you, how he wanted you closer, so impossibly close.
You, of course, returned the sentiment. He was made for your hands it seemed, every moment he wasn't between them made you yearn for just another hour of listless cuddles or moments like this. Sneaking away from responsibilities to show your love and devotion to one another.Â
If only it could last longer-
âProfessor Lupin?â Hermione's voice called out into his office. Remus cursed and you quickly stumbled back. He cleared his throat, shuffling through the confiscated objects, to find anything he could snag.Â
âI'll be out in a moment!â He called back as you fixed his tie and ruffled shirt, he grabbed the first thing he spotted and stole another quick kiss from you before leaving the room.
You leaned against a shelf and watched from the crack of the door in amusement as Lupin hurried to his desk.
âMs. Granger, I am terribly sorry, is it possible for us to reschedule?â Remus pressed and looked at what he had in his hand.
A stapler.
Why on earth did he grab a stapler?
Quickly he sat at his desk and pulled out a few assignments. Grabbing some he had already graded and began to staple them together.Â
Hermione was no fool and he knew that, she stared at him in bewilderment, slowly putting her hands on her books tighter. âUhm, Professor? Isn't that the stapler Professor {L/N} confiscated from Creevey?âÂ
Lupin began to staple things a bit quicker, waving her off.Â
âYes, Ms. Granger, I think it would be, but I did borrow it from the confiscated,â He weaned on, collected and poised, a bit too good at putting up a face. Everytime you two have almost been caught, he's shown this side.Â
âWhy would you possibly need a stapler?â He asked in disbelief.
âTo.. staple?â He lifted his eyebrow at her. âI do appreciate your curiosity, but I assure you this is none of your concern.â He spoke idley, having opened the stapler and pressed the top down against the pages and his table. Hermione seemed appalled at the misuse.Â
âNow, if you'll please allow me to pick another time-â Before he could finish his statement, he attempted to raise his hand, only for his wrist to be locked in place. He looked down, just to see he had stapled his own sleeve to the desk under a few pages of paper.Â
You had to cover your mouth and so did Hermione.
âUhm, on second thought, sir, I think I'll spend my study hour in the library.â She slowly smirked, turning to briskly walk away.
Remus slowly sunk his face into his hands, the second his classroom door was closed he waved his hand to shut his office door. Only for the room to be filled with your laughter.
You walked out of the room, holding your sides as Lupin lost his front and stared at you with flushed cheeks.
âNot a word-â
âNo! No please!â You wheezed out. âSeveral! Several words must be had!â You doubled over his desk, struggling to get the staple from his sleeves, when you finally managed, you were throwing your head back absolutely lost in boisterous laughter.
Remus wasn't even mad. How could he be? You looked so damn happy. So giddy with joy at the embarrassing show he put on. Quickly, he stood, walking around his desk with a purpose and grabbed your cheeks. You were still struggling to catch your breath as he playfully scoffed at you.
âNot very polite, Professor {L/N}.â He taunted and you grabbed his biceps and clung to him to try and clam down. It didn't help when he leaned down and began to pepper kisses all over your hot face.Â
âMercy!â You wheezed and he shook his head.
âWhat happened to all those words, Professor?â He teased and you shook your head, giggling as he absolutely mawled you with his lips.
~~~
The Grandhall was lively with the buzz of Sirius Blackâs attacks. Managing to get into the Gryffindorsâ common room was a feat that bewildered everyone.
However, what everyone was truly talking about was how he broke into the astronomy tower and Professor {L/N}âs office. It had managed to get out that Sirius Black himself left you a note that Dumbledore promptly confiscated. More accurately, the conversation was about how unbothered you were about the news.
That, and how a certain professor reacted to that news.Â
He had gone down to the commons with McGonagall to check on Harry and the other students. Only when Flitwick came up in a rush and announced the break in and how you were nowhere to be found, the students watched in horror and shock as Lupin pulled his wand and ran from the towers at a speed they couldn't determine was truly human.
He found you soon after, running down the hall towards the Gryffindor tower, also looking for Harry. He stopped and pulled you into a tight hold no one could see. You were confused at first, but you eventually melted into him. You two were spied on by none other than Colin Creevey, who snapped a photo and was showing it around the lunch table.Â
âSee! I knew it! What a romantic! Ran straight to her in the face of danger?â One of the seventh years swooned and Ron scoffed.
âI don't get it, it's just two people hugging.â He mumbled and began to poke at his food, the twins giving each other a look before they rushed to tease Ron.
âTwo people hugging,â Fred started.
âHands below the waist!â George chimed in, holding up the photo as if to emphasize his point, gesturing to where Lupin's hands were holding you so tight your heels were slightly off the ground.
âOh, how scandalous.â Fred concurred and Ron rolled his eyes.
âI hug Hermione, does that make us secretly married?â Ron pushed and Hermione quickly looked down at her book in a slight flush.Â
âYou wish.â George snickered and Fred clapped his hand on Ron's back, making him cough on his potatoes.
âReally, Ronald dearest, you wouldn't know the difference. You hardly know how to hold a girl now.â He teased and George nodded along.
âYou'll get there one day, brother. For now you'll have to trust us.â
âThis,â They both pointed this time.
âIs not a normal hug.â Both of them spoke at the same time.
Angelica finally spoke up. âGiven the context, that man is whipped. Even if nothing is happening now, he is so in love it's humbling.â She got up and gathered her Quidditch gear.
âCome on boys.â
âRight behind you.â Fred purred and earned himself a look from her over her shoulder, George laughed as the three of them hurried off. Leaving the photo for Ginny to pick up.
âOh yeah, there is absolutely no platonic explanation for this.â She hummed and tossed it to the center of the table, Neville shrugged, no wanting to contribute.Â
âI think that whatever is happening between those two, it's clear they care about each other.â Hermione hummed and Harry finally agreed. Suddenly, he looked at his friends with a look of absolute mischief.
âDo you know how we can find out?â He mused and Hermione gave a groan and Ron shot up in his seat.
âHow?â
Harry smirked and pulled out the map the twins had gifted him, showing it off to his friends with a cocky smirk. You had caught him with it days ago, and simply zipped your lips and walked away.
âIf they are meeting anywhere, it's likely the astronomy tower.â
~~~
Now.. the plan didn't go exactly as planned.
âAnd I simply can not comprehend how all three of you continue to be the only Gryffindors I've had to reprimand this year!â Lupinâs voice filled the otherwise silent and empty Defense Against The Dark Arts classroom. Unfortunately for the trio, who were out far past curfew, Lupin just so happened to be on his way to the Astronomy tower when he spotted them seemingly just on time for his arrival.
âWhat about my brothers?â Ron muttered before Hermione shot him a look, elbow jabbing his side.
âRonald.â She hissed.
The entirety of Hogwarts Valley had been buzzing with the news of Sirius Blackâs newest escapade into the castle and Lupin could not comprehend why the three thought it was a good idea to do everything but what they were told.Â
âSafety comes first and for me to find you lot outside of your dorms with a murder on the loose? With this bloody-â Lupin began to lift the map before his eyes snapped up at the sound of his door opening. He quickly shut his mouth when he saw you peak into the dark space.
âRemus?â You called out, before you paused and stared at the four infront of you. Your mind firing off a million excuses in quick succession. âOh, I was unaware you had company.â
Lupin sighed and rubbed his face, seeming to untangle himself from the thralls of his anger. It wasn't uncommon for you two to find eachother late at night like this, but was certainly not the greatest idea of his yet- reprimanding the trio when he knew you'd be coming. As you always did when he didn't meet you at the Astronomy tower as promised. His favorite part of the end of a stressful day was a night full of whispers, stories and playful remarks. Reminiscing on your school years while recreating some memories long forgotten after the war. This time, not in his dorm, but his office or your room. âIt's quite alright. I can still review your lesson plans.â
He was a terrifyingly good liar. That should not be attractive.
âRight. I will be in your office, Lupin.â You remarked and began to walk past the group of three who looked at you like you might save them. Sorry kiddos- he was grumpy enough as it was.Â
You gave them a grimace, glancing at the map before quickly looking away with wide eyes and hurrying over to the office. Lupin caught the look and held up his hand. âStop.â
You squeezed your eyes shut and slowly turned to face him. Giving him your adorable nervous look that you knew didn't work on him- well, you tried.
He made a come hither motion and you walked over, ready to be lectured like the kids beside you. He held up the map and you gave a nervous smile.Â
âWhat? However, did you find this, Harry? This is supposed to be in Flinchâs office!â You gave the worst and most unbelievable fake disappointed tone, hands on your hips and frowning down at the three. You struggled not to smile as Harry gave a small one, before laughing a bit. Hermione covered her face in a mix of fluster and secondhand embarrassment. Ron was grinning ear to ear.Â
â{L/N}...â Lupin warned and you huffed.
âYou got me in trouble with the big boss here, Harry.â You teased and he finally cracked his lips into a brighter smile. You looked back at Remus and slowly interlocked your fingers in front of your lips, as if it did anything to hide your face. âIn my defense-â
âYou three are dismissed.â He mused quickly and slammed the paper on the table beside him. You tried your best to hide your smile. It was hard to take him seriously when you have seen him panic and staple his sleeve to a desk. The trio hurried to shuffle out, Harry sent you a greatful look and you simply winked at him. Something Remus rolled his eyes at.
âDid you see Harry with the map?â He asked in a stern tone when the kids left. You looked away and tried to look a little regretful.Â
âIt's very possible.âÂ
âAnd you didn't think to take it?â He asked in an incredulous tone.
âI mean, it certainly crossed my mind.â You slowly stopped hiding your smile and looked back to the taller man who was taking a few steps into your space.
âAnd you didn't?â He pushed.
âWell, in all fairness, Rem. It is technically his.â You snarked back finally and Remus gave a bitter laugh.Â
âProfessor {L/N}, did you think that maybe if this map fell into the wrong hands it could cause a serious danger to Harry?â He pushed and you clicked your tongue. You knew who he was talking about. A conversation you've had a million times, well, more an argument. It got worse when he heard of the note.
He was so willing to believe Sirius Black to be a killer, while you believed Sirius could bring himself to the point of ending someone's life, James Potter was more than a human to him. Even with his plea of guilty, you couldn't believe it. James, Lily, and Harry? You would stake your life on it. He was innocent.
It was what you were looking for, an explanation, hopefully that was what the note was for. But unlike your communications with the magical creatures of the forest, Dumbledore was not so willing to give up information when he had it. The old prick-
âI hate when we talk about this.â You huffed in honesty and leaned back on one of the desks of the room. He sighed through his nose and pinched the bridge that connected it to his forehead. âHoney-â
âAh ah ah! Honey is for marriage.â You mused and he did his best to fight the smile growing on his face. Easily letting you steer the conversation from his own negative thoughts, he hated being upset around you. âThat so?â
âIt's very so. More so than most soâs.â You hummed and he blinked a few times at you before he couldn't help but smirk.Â
âGive me my mother's ring back then.â He mused and held out his hand. You have a faux gasp.Â
âExcuse you, sir. I seem to remember your mother telling you this belonged to me.âÂ
âWhen we were 18!â He challenged, letting himself fall victim to your antics. Like school children. âAnd last I checked, your reaction was less then pleasant.â
âWe had been dating for a year and I was going to the North Pole in my defense, tart boy.â You scoffed and cringed at the memory. How you practically fall out of your chair when Hope made a comment about her ring.Â
âTart boy?â
âTart boy.â
âI'll show you a tart boy.â He scoffed and took your cheeks. You giggled like a goofball, grabbing his lapels and trying to pull him closer. He smirked at you and kept his distance.
âRemus-â You huffed and glared at him a bit. His smirk only grew as he reached into your pocket, pulling out the modest gem. You rolled your eyes fondly and held out your hand for him, he slipped the ring back in its rightful place.
âSorry, call me old fashioned. But I'd like to kiss my fiancĂŠ, not my coworker.â He teased and you couldn't help but laugh.Â
âYou absolute sap.â
âHard not to be.â He mumbled and leaned in, finally kissing you. Both your eyelids lowered but he held eye contact. So much affection bumbling in your chests, it was too much to look away. Eventually, you gave into your shyness, closing your eyes. He slowly pushed your knees apart and slipped between them, making your face grow hot.
He pulled away at this and you huffed, he smirked at you when you looked back up at him. âHey, sir, your lips on mine again. It's a marital duty and all that jazz.â
âThought we had to be married for marital privileges, honey?âÂ
âOh don't use anything I say around you against me, I can hardly think.â
He bellowed out a laugh at your mischievous look up at him. Slowly biting your lip as you struggled to keep your confident act up.
âWhatever will I do with you, {L/N}?â
âWell, I have a few ideas.â You hummed and began to fiddle with his tie. He curled an eyebrow and you looked forward, looking up at his hazel eyes with a playful pout. âKiss me again. I promise, you keep my lips occupied, no more bad behavior.â
âBecause you won't be able to talk?âÂ
âPrecisely.â
âWhat in the world!?â You suddenly heard from the far corner of the room. Your face filled with shock and snapped over to see an empty corner, you could of sworn you heard Ronald just a moment ago.
 Remus quickly moved from between your legs and waved his wand, yanking off the invisibility cloak to reveal an appalled Ron, a delighted Harry, and a flustered Hermione.
âBloody hell!â Remus boomed and you covered your mouth and looked away. Doing your best not to laugh.
âYes, mum and dad do kiss when the kids are away.â You cheeked and Remus looked at you like you had just made some grand offense to his ears.
Hermione giggled and Harryâs smile grew ten fold.
Ron, however, seemed very displeased.
âI owe the twins so much money.â
ridiculously long list of things iâve noticed about thomas grant and adam wadsworthâs portrayals of albus and scorpius
sorry in advance if this is messy, i wrote this at like 4am
albus flinches away when james steps too close to him!!!
when scorpius asks albus whether he prefers albus or al, he doesnât have to think about his answer. instead he just looks shocked that someone was actually asking that, like nobodyâs ever considered his feelings before. makes me feel like heâd been waiting his entire life for someone to actually ask him that.
tomâs albus doesnât cry during the fight with harry like iâve seen a lot of the other actors do. he just stares blankly ahead of him and completely shuts down. iâm head over heels in love with this choice because it really hammers home how hard it is for albus to express his feelings or communicate with anyone.
albusâs reaction to the love potion really really makes me believe that ron intended it to be a mean gay joke. even if ron didnât intend for it to come across that way, thatâs definitely what albus takes it as.
scorpius is just staring vacantly at a wall before he spots albus on the train in their 4th year. not sure if this is a specific acting choice or if iâm just reading into it too much?
they hold hands for a second and stand with their faces an inch away from each other as soon as they duck into their train compartment. their body language in private is so different from their body language in public.
albus squeezes his eyes closed when they hug. he really needed that physical affection but he hates anyone but scorpius being near him.
scorpius puts his hand on albusâs chest when the train starts moving. nothing to say about that its just really gay.
my favorite delivery of oooo a quiz⌠WIZZO!!!â i fucking love how he does jazz hands when he says it, especially because itâs the second time he does jazz hands in that scene. heâs so me.
albus does so many little hand gestures in this scene, heâs way more comfortable being expressive around scorpius. he almost mirrors scorpiusâs stupid little mannerisms.
bonus- not scorbus related but craig is first seen wearing his beanie on the train during the this sequence (where albus and scorpius decide to run away)!! idk if they donât do this in other productions or if i just hadnât ever picked up on it before, but itâs a really cute detail. does anyone know if he canonically got it when he became head boy?
when amos first tells them to leave, scorpius grabs onto albusâs sleeve
not even technically them but the ron and harry actors grab onto each other sooooo much (as albus and scorpius)
in love with how long scorpius hold out his âWIIIIIIIZZZOOOOâ and how albus tries to match his energy with the âDOUBLE WIZZOâ
delphi steals scorpâs little phrases and his awkward way of speaking and his mannerisms to try and appeal to albus because she knows that he reeeeally likes him- and i hate hate HATEEEE how she makes him feel like a freak for being himself when all the while sheâs stealing his personality. scorpius plays with the fabric of his sweater and then fidgets with his hands after she tries to make him feel left out in the forbidden forest and i can FEEL what heâs feeling through the screen.
scorpius is JEALOUS jealous of delphi and when he talks to her his voice is quiet and monotone, which is the most un-scorpius thing ever. i love it. you can feel how much he hates her. i hate her too, this delphi is despicable. (very talented actress!!)
when scorpius tears his eyes away from the beautiful sight in front of them to look at albus and say âyouâre my best friendâ (which is crazy enough on its own) he talks in a really sweet, low voice before returning really quickly to his normal scorp-voice, as if he was afraid to let albus think about what had just happened
albus jumps up and down with excitement when they announce the triwizard tournament. he starts and then has to stop himself from cheering for hogwarts. funny that a guy who was just saying how much he hates hogwarts would do a thing like that.
everyone around scorpius gets startled when he starts cheering for krum because his screaming is so weird lmao
at the end of the scene where albus tells scorpius theyâll be better off without each other, scorpius just slumps over on the steps and stays there for the ENTIRETY of the next scene until he eventually gets wheeled off with the stairs. it looks like heâs fiddling with something? maybe his wand? maybe just his hands?
obviously the staircase ballet is the staircase ballet, but the way they look at each other is just AAAAUUUUGHHHHHHH
at the end of the ballet scorpius steps towards albus first, but albus is the one who reaches his hand out and slinks down onto the steps
obsessed with that gay little purse scorpius carries the time turner in
delphi gets scorpius to let his guard down during their conversation and scorpius starts talking like himself in front of her again!!!
albus does the little puke-gag-joke-thing in the library to try and make scorpius feel better </3
theyâre both fidgeting with their hands throughout their whole conversation :(
ALBUSâS LITTLE GIGGLE WHEN SCORPIUS AGREES TO COME WITH HIM TO FIX TIME
this isnât specific to this production but scorpiusâs shoes are one of my favorite details. in the normal world, he wears big clunky shoes to showcase his awkwardness, whereas in the dark dimension he wears running shoes!! evil scorp is athletic!!!
the second âim fighting for albusâ that comes out of scorpiusâs mouth is said almost entirely to himself
their little hug in the water :,)
i LOVE LOVE LOVE that scorpius tries to hug draco and he pushes him away and throws his jacket at him in such a cold manner. it makes their hug near the end feel so much more important to their relationship. as soon as we meet scorpius he immediately refers to himself as having daddy issues and we donât see nearly enough of that in this play.
bonus p2- one of my favorite parts of this show is the in trouble again number!!! i love the background gang and all of their little scenes like this. craig being a little gossip monger is funny as shit!!!! it gives him so much personality and makes his death that much sadder :(
the delivery of âscorpiusâŚ.. he matters to meâŚ. you know that donât you?â is INSANE. tom grant delivers all of the coming out adjacent lines so perfectly.
i love how scorpius moves his body. he waves his arms around in the air so often.
scorpius tickled albus lmao theyâre so weird
when scorpius talks about hating the other world, albus throws in âapart from polly chapman fancying youâ quite bitterly and scorpius almost completely cuts him off. he doesnât acknowledge what he said in any way shape or form and albus seems to notice that heâs not interested in polly.
scorpius rubs his socks on the floor while he talks :3
the choice to have scorpius move from his bed to albusâs bed and pull albusâs blanket into his lap when he tells him that he changed himself back for him is so AAAUGHHH
AND SCORPIUS DOES THE SAME THING THAT HE DID EARLIER AGAIN!!! he gets all quiet and sweet when heâs sort of admitting his feelings to albus and then all of a sudden he stands up and goes back to his normal loud voice
âMALFOY THE UNANXIOUS IS A PRRRRRETTY GOOD LIIIIAAARâ
delphi mocking scorpius and him immediately tensing up oh he hates her ass so much
scorpius reaches out to try and intercept albus handing delphi the time turner and albus giggles at scorpius because heâs happy sheâs not extremely pissed at them
scorpius holds onto the railing right up until he gets his hands bound together because heâs afraid of heights. thought it was cute that adam chose to do this even though his fear of heights isnât mentioned anywhere in this version.
i LOVE the torture scene in this version. albus is stone faced when delphi is threatening to torture him and then he IMMEDIATELY falls to his knees begging and pleading when she turns toward scorpius.
delphi is quite literally outing albus in this scene. the silence after she says that love is his weakness and points to scorpius is SO long and SO loud omg. itâs quite literally ten whole seconds (i counted) of albus and scorpius just looking at each other. it genuinely feels like she just spilled out what heâs been keeping inside of himself for so long, itâs gutwrenching. i guess they did just watch craig die so they do in fact have bigger problems, but you can see albusâs heart stop beating and its so terrible.
i love how albus turns to scorpius when the stationmaster starts unintelligibly talking to them like âhey, youâre doing the talking rn just so you knowâ
iâm obsessed with how excited scorpius is to tell albus all about the history of the place theyâre in. in love with his little gasps at everything he sees and his jump when he says âSQUEAK!â
albus motioning for scorpius to stop when heâs demonstrating how to scream for help lmaoooo
albus pointing with both hands at scorpius while they try to come up with a plan is so cute. albus believes in him so much.
i love how scorpius keeps hugging draco even as heâs talking
their foreheads are literally brushing against each other my god these bitches gay
albus asks âand thats who you want in your palace?â in an almost panicked way like heâs afraid scorpius doesnât feel the same way about him.
albus holds onto scorpiusâs shoulders while rose tries to reassure them that they didnât just get walked in on lmao
3rd and final instance of scorpius trying to change the subject- asking immediately about quidditch so albus doesnât get the chance to say anything related to what just happened
scorpius says âcome onâ like heâs trying to get albus to come cut a rug with him at a middle school dance
obsessed with their little gagging and puking bit and how they made it a callback to what albus does in the library
maybe my favorite hug moment from any scorbus duo. i love how albus initially reacts with shock but then melts into it and closes his eyes, only pulling away to make sure heâs not reading the situation entirely wrong (heâs not)
my favorite ending scene by far. the coming out hits SO hard. the way albus fiddles with his zipper and scrunches up his sleeve in his hand, you can tell how absolutely terrified he is of saying this to his dad. the line delivery is genuinely fantastic. the more he pauses the longer you have to take it all in- and he pauses a LOT.
okie thanks for reading!!!!!
James Sirius: Scorpius and Albus have been in Albus's room for a while. Maybe we should... check on them
Lily Luna: All you're trying to do is catch them doing something wrong or inappropriate
James Sirius: I would never do such a selfish thing! But you can't deny that you're not curious.
Lily Luna:... okay fine
[They go up to Albus's room and slam the door open, revealing a shocked looking Scorpius and annoyed Albus. There's strings and beads on the floor, where Albus and Scorpius are sitting criss cross apple sauce, most of them in a few little containers]
James Sirius: I- what the fuck?
Albus Severus: we're making bracelets bitch
Manipulative/Morally Grey Dumbledore? An In-Depth Canon Analysis
So when I look at Harry Potter, my goal is to separate what I think the books are intending to say, from what they actually say, from what the movies say⌠and what the common fan interpretation is. So today Iâm interested in Dumbledore, and specifically in the common headcanon of Manipulative/Morally Gray Dumbledore. Is that (intentionally or unintentionally) supported by the text?
PART I: Â Omniscient Dumbledore
âI think he knows more or less everything that goes on hereâ
In Book 1, yes Dumbledore honestly does seem to know everything. He 100% arranged for Harry to find the Mirror of Erised, publicly left Hogwarts in order to nudge Quirrell into going after the Stone, and knew what Quirrell was doing the whole time. It is absolutely not a stretch, and kind of heavily implied, that the reason the Stoneâs protections feel like a little-end-of-the-year exam designed to put Harry through his paces⌠is because they are. As the series goes on this interpretation only gets more plausible, when we see the kind of protections people can put up when they donât want anyone getting through.Â
Book 1 Dumbledore knows everything⌠but what heâs actually going to do about it is anyoneâs guess. One of the first things we learn is that some of Dumbledoreâs calls can be⌠questionable. McGonagall questions his choice to leave Harry with the Dursleys, Hermione questions his choice to give Harry the Cloak and let him go after the Stone, Percy and Ron both matter-of-factly call him âmad.â The ânitwit, blubber, oddment, tweakâ speech is a joke where Dumbledore says heâs going to say a few words, then literally does say a few (weird) words. I know there are theories that those particular words are supposed to be insulting the four houses, or referencing the Hogwarts house stereotypes, or that theyâre some kind of warning. But within the text, this is pure Lewis Carroll British Nonsense Verse stuff (and people came up with answers to the impossible Alice in Wonderland âwhy is a raven like a writing deskâ riddle too.)Â
This characterization also explains a lot of Dumbledoreâs decisions about how to run a school, locked in during Book 1. Presumably Binns, Peeves, Filch, Snape are all there because Dumbledore finds them funny, atmospheric, and/or character building. He's just kind of a weird guy. He absolutely knew that Lockhart was a fraud in Book 2 (with that whole âImpaled upon your own sword, Gilderoy?â thing after Lockhart oblivates himself. ) So maybe he is also there to be funny/atmospheric/character building, or to teach Harry a lesson about fame, or because Dumbledore is using the cursed position to bump off people he doesnât like. Who knows.
(I actually donât think JKR had locked in âthe DADA position is literally cursed by Voldemortâ until Book 6. )
Dumbledore absolutely knows that Harry is listening in when Lucius Malfoy comes to take Hagrid to Azkaban, and itâs fun to speculate that maybe he let himself get fired in Book 2 as part of a larger plan to boot Lucius off the Board of Governors. So far, thatâs the sort of thing heâd do. But in Books 3 and 4, we are confronted with a number of important things that Dumbledore just missed. He doesnât know any of the Marauders were animagi, he doesnât know what really happened with the Potterâs Secret Keeper, doesnât know Moody is Crouch, and doesnât know the Marauders Map even exists. But in Books 5 and 6, his omniscience does seem to come back online. (In a flashback, Voldemort even comments that he is "omniscient as everâ when Dumbledore lists the specific Death Eaters he has in Hogsmeade as backup.) Dumbledore knows exactly what Draco and Voldemort are planning, and his word is taken as objective truth by the entire Order of the Phoenix - who apparently only tolerate Snape because Dumbledore vouches for him:
âSnape,â repeated McGonagall faintly, falling into the chair. âWe all wondered . . . but he trusted . . . always . . . Snape . . . I canât believe it. . . .â âSnape was a highly accomplished Occlumens,â said Lupin, his voice uncharacteristically harsh. âWe always knew that.â âBut Dumbledore swore he was on our side!â whispered Tonks. âI always thought Dumbledore must know something about Snape that we didnât. . . .â âHe always hinted that he had an ironclad reason for trusting Snape,â muttered Professor McGonagall (...) âWouldnât hear a word against him!â
McGonagall questions Dumbledore about the Dursleys, but not about Snape. I see this as part of the larger trend of basically Dumbledoreâs deification. In the beginning of the series, heâs treated as a clever, weird dude. By the end, heâs treated like a god.Â
PART II: Chessmaster Dumbledore
âI prefer not to keep all my secrets in one basket.â
When Dumbledore solves problems, he likes to go very hands-off. He didnât directly teach Harry about the Mirror of Erised - he gave him the Cloak, knew he would wander, and moved the Mirror so it would be in his path. He sends Snape to deal with Quirrell and Draco, rather than do it himself. He (or his portrait) tells Snape to confund Mundungus Fletcher and get him to suggest the Seven Potters strategy. He puts Mrs. Figg in place to watch Harry, then ups the protection in Book 5 - all without informing Harry. The situation with Slughorn is kind of a Dumbledore-manipulation master class - even the way he deliberately disappears into the bathroom so Harry will have enough solo time to charm Slughorn. Of course he only wants Slughorn under his roof in the first place to pick his brain about Voldemort⌠but again, instead of doing that himself, he gets Harry to do it for him.Â
Dumbledore has a moment during Harryâs hearing in Book 5 (which he fakes evidence for) where he informs Fudge that Harry is not under the Ministryâs jurisdiction while at Hogwarts. Which has insane implications. Itâs never explicitly stated, but as the story goes on, it at least makes sense that Dumbledore is deliberately obscuring how powerful he is, and how much influence he really has, by getting other people to do things for him. But the problem with that is because he is so powerful, it become really easy for a reader to look back after they get more information and say⌠well if Dumbledore was controlling the situation⌠why couldnât he have done XYZ. Here are two easy examples from Harryâs time spent with the Dursleys:
1. Mrs. Figg is watching over Harry from day one, but she canât tell him sheâs a squib and also she has to keep him miserable on purpose:
âDumbledoreâs orders. I was to keep an eye on you but not say anything, you were too young. Iâm sorry I gave you such a miserable time, but the Dursleys would never have let you come if theyâd thought you enjoyed it. It wasnât easy, you knowâŚâ
Itâs pretty intense to think of Dumbledore saying âoh yes, invite this little child over and keep him unhappy on purpose.â But okay. Itâs important to keep Harry ignorant of the magical world and vice versa. fine. But once he goes to Hogwarts⌠that doesnât apply anymore? Iâm sure when Harry thinks heâs going to be imprisoned permanently in his bedroom during Book 2, it wouldâve been comforting to know that Dumbledore was sending around someone to check on him. And when he literally runs away from home in Book 3⌠having the address of a trusted adult that he could easily get to would have been great for everybody.Â
2. When Vernon is about to actually kick Harry out during Book 5, Dumbledore sends a howler which intimidates Petunia into insisting that Harry has to stay. Vernon folds and does exactly what she says. If Dumbledore could intimidate Petunia into doing this, then why couldnât he intimidate her into, say - giving Harry the second bedroom instead of a cupboard. Or fixing Harryâs glasses. In Book 1, the Dursleys donât bother Harry during the entire month of August because Hagrid gives Dudley a pigâs tail. In the summer between third and fourth year, the Dursleys back off because Harry is in correspondence with Sirius (a person they fear.) But the Dursleys are afraid of all wizards. Like at this point it doesnât seem that hard to intimidate them into acting decently to Harry.Â
PART III: Dumbledore and the DursleysÂ
âNot a pampered little princeâ
JKR wanted two contradictory things. She wanted Dumbledore to be a fundamentally good guy: a wise, if eccentric mentor figure. But she also wanted Harry to have a comedically horrible childhood being locked in a cupboard, denied food, given broken glasses and ill fitting/embarrassing clothes, and generally made into a little Cinderella. Then, itâs a bigger contrast when he goes to Hogwarts and expulsion can be used as an easy threat. (Although the only person we ever see expelled is Hagrid, and that was for murder.)
So, there are a couple of tricks she uses to make it okay that Dumbledore left Harry at the Dursleys.â The first is that once Harry leavesâŚÂ nothing that happens there is given emotional weight. When heâs in the Wizarding World, he barely talks about Dursleys, barely thinks about them. They almost never come up in the narration (unless Harryâs worried about being expelled, or theyâre sending him comedically awful presents.) They are completely cut from movies 4, 6, and 7 part 2 - and you do not notice.Â
The second trick⌠is that Dumbledore himself clearly doesnât think that the Dursleys are that bad. During the Kingâs Cross vision-quest, he describes 11-year-old Harry as âalive and healthy (...) as normal a boy as I could have hoped under the circumstances. Thus far, my plan was working well.â Â
Now, this could have been really interesting. Like in a psychological way, I get it. Dumbledore had a rocky home life. Dad in prison, mom spending all her time taking care of his volatile and dangerous sister. Aberforth seems to have reacted to the situation by running completely wild, itâs implied that he never even had formal schooling⌠and Albus doubled down on being the Golden Child, making the family look good from the outside, and finding every means possible to escape. I would have believed it if Molly or Kingsley had a beat of being horrified by the way the Dursleys are treating Harry⌠but Dumbledore treats it as like, whatever. Business as usual.Â
But that isnât the framing that the books use. Dumbledore is correct that the Dursleys arenât that bad, and I think itâs because JKR fundamentally does not take the Dursleys seriously as threats. I also think she has a fairly deeply held belief that suffering creates goodness, so possibly Harry suffering at the hands of the Dursleys⌠was necessary? To make him good? Dumbledore himself has an arc of âlong period of suffering = increased goodness.â So does Severus Snape, Dudleyâs experience with the Dementor kickstarts his character growth, etc. Itâs a trope she likes.
Itâs only in The Cursed Child that the Dursleys are given any kind of weight when it comes to Harryâs psyche. This is one of the things that makes me say Jack Thorne wrote that play, because itâs just not consistent with how JKR likes to write the Dursleys. Itâs consistent with the way fanfiction likes to write the Dursleys. And look, The Cursed Child is fascinatingly bad, I have so many problems with it, but it does seem to be doing like ⌠a dark reinterpretation of Harry Potter? And itâs interested in saying something about cycles of abuse. I can absolutely see how the way the play handles things is flattering to JKR. It retroactively frames the Dursleysâ abuse in a more negative way, and maybe thatâs something she wanted after criticism that the Harry Potter books treat physical abuse kind of lightly. (i.e. Harry at the hands of the Dursleys, and house-elves at the hands of everybody. Even Molly Weasley âwallopsâ Fred with a broomstick.)Â
PART IV: Dumbledore and Harry
âThe whole PotterâDumbledore relationship. Itâs been called unhealthy, even sinisterâ
So whenever Harry feels betrayed by Dumbledore in the books - and he absolutely does, itâs some of JKRâs best writing - itâs not because he left him with the Dursleys. Itâs because Dumbledore kept secrets from him, or lied to him, or didnât confide in him on a personal level.Â
âLook what he asked from me, Hermione! Risk your life, Harry! And again! And again! And donât expect me to explain everything, just trust me blindly, trust that I know what Iâm doing, trust me even though I donât trust you! Never the whole truth! Never!â (...) I donât know who he loved, Hermione, but it was never me. This isnât love, the mess heâs left me in. He shared a damn sight more of what he was really thinking with Gellert Grindelwald than he ever shared with me.â
Eventually though, Harry falls in line with the rest of the Order, and treats Dumbledore as an all-knowing God. And this decision comes so close to being critiquedâŚÂ but the series never quite commits. Rufus Scrimgeour comments that, âWell, it is clear to me that [Dumbledore] has done a very good job on youâ - implying that Harry is a product of a deliberate manipulation, and that the way Harry feels about Dumbledore is a direct result of how he's been controlling the situation (and Harry.) But Harry responds to â[You are] Dumbledoreâs man through and through, arenât you, Potter?â with âYeah, I am. Glad we straightened that out,â and itâs treated as a badass, mic drop line.Â
Ron goes on to say that Harry maybe shouldnât be trusting Dumbledore and maybe his plan isnât that great⌠but then he abandons his friends, regrets what he did, and is only able to come back because Dumbledore knew he would react this way? So that whole thing only makes Dumbledore seem more powerful? Aberforth tells Harry (correctly) that Dumbledore is expecting too much of him and heâs not interested in making sure that he survives:
âHow can you be sure, Potter, that my brother wasnât more interested in the greater good than in you? How can you be sure you arenât dispensable (...) Why didnât he say⌠âTake care of yourself, hereâs how to surviveâ? (...) Youâre seventeen, boy!â
But, Aberforth is treated as this Hamish Abernathy type who has given up, and needs Harry to ignite his spark again. Thereâs a pretty dark line in the script of Deathly Hallows Part 2:
Which at least shows this was a possible interpretation the creative team had in their heads⌠but then of course it isnât actually in the movie.Â
So in the end, insane trust in Dumbledore is only ever treated as proper and good. Then in Cursed Child they start using âDumbledoreâ as an oath instead of âMerlinâ and itâs weird and I donât like it.
PART V: Dumbledore and his Strays
âI have known, for some time now, that you are the better man.â
So Dumbledore has this weird relationship pattern. He has a handful of people he pulled out of the fire at some point and (as a result) these people are insanely loyal to him. They do his dirty work, and he completely controls them. This is an interesting pattern, because I think it helps explain why so many fans read Dumbledoreâs relationship with Snape (and with Harry) as sinister.Â
Letâs start with the first of Dumbledoreâs âstrays.â Dumbledore saves Hagrid's livelihood and probably life after he is accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets - and then he uses Hagrid to disappear Harry after the Potters' death, gets him to transport the Philosopherâs Stone, and heâs the one who he trusts to be Harryâs first point of contact with the Wizarding World. Also, Hagrid's situation doesnât change? Even after he is cleared of opening the Chamber of Secrets, he keeps using that pink flowered umbrella with his broken wand inside, a secret that he and Dumbledore seem to share. He could get a legal wand, he could continue his education. But he doesnât seem to, and I donât know why.Â
So, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is a well known fix-it fic that basically asks âWhat if Harry Potter was a machiavellian little super genius who solves the plot in a year?â I enjoyed it when it was coming out, but the only thing I would call a cheat is the way McGonagall brings Harry to Diagon Alley instead of Hagrid. Because a Harry Potter who has spent a couple of days with McGonagall is going to be much better informed, better equipped and therefore more powerful than a Harry spending the same amount of time with Hagrid. McGonagall is both a lot more knowledgeable and a lot less loyal to Dumbledore. She is loyal, obviously, but she also questions his choices in a way that Hagrid never does. And as a result, Dumbledore does not trust her with the same kind of delicate jobs he trusts to Hagrid.
Mrs. Figg is another one of Dumbledoreâs strays. Sheâs a squib, so we can imagine that she doesnât really have a lot of other options, and he sets her up to keep tabs on (and be unpleasant to) little Harry. He also has her lie to the entire Wizangamot, which has got to present some risk. Within this framework, Snape is another very clear stray. Dumbledore kept him out of Azkaban, and is the only reason that the Order trusts him. He gets sent on on dangerous double-agent missions⌠but before that heâs sort of kept on hand, even though heâs clearly miserable at Hogwarts. Firenze is definitely a stray - he can't go back to the centaurs, and who other than Dumbledore is going to hire him? And I do wonder about Trelawney. We donât know much about her relationship with Dumbledore, but I wouldnât be at all surprised if she was a stray as well.
I think there was an attempt to turn Lupin into a stray that didnât⌠quite work. He is clearly grateful to Dumbledore for letting him attend Hogwarts and then for hiring him, but Lupin doesnât really hit that necessary level of trustworthy that the others do. Most of what Dumbledore doesnât know in Book 3 are things that Lupin could have told him, and didnât. If had to think of a Watsonsian reason why Remus is given all these solo missions away from the other Order members (that never end up matteringâŚ) itâs because I donât think Dumbledore trusts him that much. Lupin doubts him too much.Â
âDumbledore believed that?â said Lupin incredulously. âDumbledore believed Snape was sorry James was dead? Snape hated James. . . .â
 We also see Dumbledore start the process of making Draco into a stray by promising to protect him and his parents. And with all of that⌠itâs kind of easy to see how Harry fits the profile. He has a very bleak existence (which Dumbledore knows about.) He is pulled out of it by Dumbledoreâs proxies. Itâs not surprising that Harry develops a Hagrid-level loyalty, especially after Dumbledore saves him from Barty, from his Ministry hearing, and then from Voldemort. Harry walks to his death because Dumbledore told him too.Â
Just to be clear, I donât think this pattern is deliberate. I think this is a side effect of JKR wanting to write Dumbledore as a nice guy, and specifically as a protector of the little guy. But Dumbledore doing that while also being so powerful creates a weird power dynamic, gives him a weird edit. Itâs part of the reason people are happy to go one step farther and say that the Dursleys were mean to Harry⌠because Dumbledore actively wanted it that way. I donât think thatâs true. I think Dumbledore loves his strays and if anything, the text supports the idea that he is collecting good people, because protecting them and observing them serves some psychological function for him. Dumbledore does not believe himself to be an intrinsically good person, or trustworthy when it comes to power. So, of course someone like that would be fascinated by how powerless people operate in the world, and by people like Hagrid and Lupin and Harry, who seem so intrinsically good.Â
PART VI - Dumbledore and Grindelwald
âI was in love with you.âÂ
I honestly see â17-year-old Dumbledore was enamored with Grindelwaldâ as a smokescreen distracting from the actual moral grayness of the guy. He wrote some edgy letters when he was a teenager, at least partly because he thought his neighbor was hot. He thought he could move Ariana, but couldnât - which led to the chaotic three-way duel that killed her.Â
One thing I think J. K. Rowling does understand pretty well, and introduces into her books on purpose, is the concept of re-traumatization. Sirius in Book 5 is very obviously being re-traumatized by being in his childhood home and hearing the portrait of his mother screaming. Itâs why he acts out, regresses, and does a number of unadvisable things. I think itâs also deliberate that Petuniaâs unpleasant childhood is basically being re-created: her normal son next to her sisterâs magical son. It's making her worse, or at the very least preventing her from getting better. We learn that Petunia has this sublimated interest in the magical world, and can even pull out vocab like âAzkabanâ and âDementorâ when she needs to. Â She wrote Dumbledore asking to go to Hogwarts, and I could see that in a universe where Petunia didnât have to literally raise Harry, she wouldnât be as psychotically into normalness, cleanliness, and order as she is when we meet her in the books. After all, JKR doesnât like to write evil mothers. She will be bend over backwards so her mothers are never really framed as bad.
And I honestly think itâs possible that J. K. Rowling was playing with the concept of re-traumatiziation when she was fleshing out Dumbledore in Book 7. We learn all this backstory, that⌠honestly isnât super necessary? All Iâm saying is that the three-way duel at the top of the Astronomy Tower lines up really well with the three-way duel that killed Ariana. Harry is Ariana, helpless in the middle. Draco is Aberforth, well intentioned and protective of his family - but kind of useless, and kind of a liability. Severus is Grindelwald, dark and brilliant, and one of the closest relationships Dumbledore has. If this was intentional, it was probably only for reasons of narrative symmetry⌠but I think it's cool in a Gus Fring of Breaking Bad sort of way, that Dumbledore (either consciously or unconsciously) has been trying to re-create this one horrible moment in his life where he felt entirely out of control. But the second time it plays out⌠he can give it what he sees as the correct outcome. Grindelwald kills him and everyone else lives. That is how you solve the puzzle.
If you read between the lines, Dumbledore/Grindelwald is a fascinating love story. I like the detail that after Arianaâs death, Dumbledore returns to Hogwarts because itâs a place to hide and because he doesnât feel like he can be trusted with power. I like that he sits there, refusing promotions, refusing requests to be the new Minister of Magic, refusing to go deal with the growing Grindelwald threat until he absolutely canât hide anymore, at which point he defeats him (somehow.) I like reading his elaborate plan to break Elder Wandâs power as both a screw-you to Grindelwald, the wandâs previous master, but also as a weirdly romantic gesture. In Albus Dumbledoreâs mind, there is only Grindelwald. Voldemort canât even begin to compare. I like the detail that Grindelwald wonât give up Dumbledore, even under torture. And, Dumbledore doesnât put him in Azkaban. He put him in this other separate prison, which always makes it seem like heâs there under Dumbledore authority specifically. Maybe Dumbledore thinks that if he had died that day instead of ArianaâŚhe wouldnât have had to spend the rest of his life fighting and imprisoning the man he loves.
And then of course, Crimes of Grindelwald decided to take away Dumbledore's greatest weakness and say that no, actually he was a really good guy who never did anything wrong ever. He went all that time without fighting Grindelwald because they made a magical friendship no-fight bracelet. Dumbledore is randomly grabbing Lupinâs iconography (his fashion sense, his lesson plans, his job) in order to feel more soft and gentle than the person the books have created. Now Dumbledore knows about the Room Requirement, even though in the books itâs a plot point that he's too much of a goody-two-shoes to have ever found it himself. He loved Grindelwald (past tense.) And Secrets of Dumbledore is mostly about him being an omniscient mastermind so that a magical deer can tell him that he was a super good and worthy guy, and any doubt that heâs ever felt about himself is just objectively wrong and incorrect. Also now Aberforth has a neglected son, so heâs reframed as a bit of a hypocrite for getting on his brotherâs case for not protecting Harry.Â
So to summarize, I think Dumbledore began the series as this very eccentric, unpredictable mentor, whose abilities took a hit in Books 3 and 4 in order to make the plot happen. He teetered on the edge of a âdarkâ framing for like a second⌠but at the the end of the series he's written as basically infallible and godlike. Iâve heard people say that JKRâs increased fame was the reason she added the Rita Skeeter plot line, and I donât think thatâs true. But I do think her fame may have affected the way she wrote Dumbledore. Because Dumbledore is JKRâs comment on power, and by Book 5 she had so much power. In her head, I donât think that Dumbledore is handing off jobs in a manipulative way. She sees him as empowering other less powerful people. That is his job as someone in power (because remember - people who desire power shouldn't wield it.)
Dumbledoreâs power makes him emotionally disconnected from the people in his life, it makes him disliked and distrusted by the Ministry, but it doesnât make him wrong. Thatâs important. Dumbledore is never wrong. Dumbledore is always good. Thatâs why we get the Blood Pact that means he was never weak or procrastinating. Thatâs why we get the qilin saying he was a good person. Itâs why we get the tragic backstory (because giving Snape a tragic backstory worked wonders when it came to rehabilitating him.) And that is why Harry names his son Albus Severus in the epilogue, to make us readers absolutely crystal clear that these two are good men.Â
Dumbledore: Apparently, someone has been leaking classified information to the death eaters. The entire order is under investigation.
Marlene: That's crazy. No one here's a spy.
Dumbledore: How can you be so sure?
Marlene: Because I know these guys. I know everything about them.
Dumbledore: You're naive if you think people can't surprise you.
Marlene: Not these people. Here, watch this, I know what everyone's going to do tonight. It's Thursday, so Lily's going to leave early for healer training. Sirius will be working on his stupid bike. Remus will be warning Sirius about how dangerous his stupid bike is. And Peter will be visiting his mum.
Pete: She gets worried if I don't check in regularly.
Marlene: And, if I run and jump at James, he will most certainly catch me in his arms.
Marlene, sprinting to James: COMING IN!
James: NO! I'M HOLDING HOT TEA!
James: *Drops tea to catch Marlene*
âSlytherin!â Albus felt like throwing up. His stomach dropped as he stared at the tables ahead. He looked at his brother, James Sirius, sitting at Gryffindor with a shocked expression.
Mcgonnagal, ushered him away as he sat down at the Slytherin table. Some of the older years clapped him on the back, congratulating him on Slytherin. He stared at his plate until all the other names had been called. The boy on the train had sat next to him, Scorpius.
âSlytherin, eh?â Scorpius asked. âFirst one in the family. Nice one, mate. Setting an example.â
And Albus swallowed and nodded.
Part two
If it was one thing your parents stuck into your head when you were younger, it was that you, {Y/N} Gaunt, were better than any other witch in your presence.Â
âThe Lost Gauntâ is what they referred to you as. You, and of course, your parents fed into this idea. People were sure they had died out, either from your family's admittedly embarrassing financial status, or from a few choice family members disgracing your blood line with Muggle blood.
It wasn't a secret, your family's blood soaked history and ideals on muggles of any variety. Your father spoke especially lowly of half bloods, saying they were some of the most loathsome and desperate of them all, with parents who tainted their good family names by giving it to scum.Â
Very opinionated, that man.
You were much the same when you were younger. Snappy and spoiled, demanded everything and no one ever fought you on it. Even with your family's position with lack of wealth, when your parents came out of hiding as Voldemort started his horrid flock, your father didn't hesitate to join. There was no lack of support from expected places. Every pureblood with half sense wanted to be in the good graces of the heir of Slytherin, even if she didn't attend the school. Little you was treated like an absolute princess. Even receiving a letter from Durmstrang personally, your father opting for the obvious choice, burning your Hogwarts letter before you even read it.Â
It made you an absolute terror when you got to the foreign school. Suddenly, you weren't as special as you were in London. Your name still carried a lot of marit, but so did several other students. You learned to keep your mouth shut, to keep your cards to your chest, and eventually, you unlearned everything your parents taught you. You met half bloods there, stronger than you had ever known witches and wizards to be, making close friends with several other open minded purebloods and friendly half bloods.Â
Of course, you still had a family name to uphold. You studied and worked your hardest, eventually making it high enough on a social latter that Gaunt no longer mattered, but {Y/N} did.Â
You started your rebellious streak in year 4, when your father asked you if you wanted to return home for the summer. It was the first time he gave you the choice, you refused. Instead, you traveled to Muggle London without his knowing. You went with a few friends, half bloods, they wanted to show you where they grew up. Your father would have your head for this. You thought in amusement as you danced through the market and gawked at all the muggle contraptions. You were sure to them you looked absolutely delirious, but you couldn't care less in the moment.
You wandered down the streets with a few girls who had broken off from the group. When you noticed a record store, your friends waved you off, refusing to join when they knew you'd be in there for hours. A boy who fancied you gifted you a small record player, and since then, you had been collecting muggle records at any opportunity. Thank Merlin your father didn't keep track of your spending.
You walked in with your head held high, you already gave off the impression of someone too good to be there, a force of habit. You walked down the aisle and searched the albums, dismissing people who tried to educate you on what was best, mostly men trying to impress you, you figured. Nothing more charming than being spoken down to. Eventually, you made it to some of the older ones, clearly used and used and used again. A soft yellow album caught your eye from the top shelf. Etta Jones? You thought for a moment. You had never seen it before, but the woman on the cover looked beautiful.Â
You got on your toes and began to balance on a shelf, struggling to reach the damned record. You have a huff, ready to give in, before you hear a chuckle behind you. Whipping your head around you nearly spun around completely. Then, you saw him. A boy, he looked to be your age, tanned skin with soft pink scars littering his form, with one large one across his face. He had shaggy sandy blonde hair, almost brown, and the cockiest smirk on his face.
You huffed at him and put your hands on your hips, tilting your head at him. âNot very polite, you know. Watching a lady struggle without even an offer of help.âÂ
His smirk slowly turned to a dazzling smile. âYou want my help? You've been blowing past people who've offered you help this whole time.â He remarked and you scoffed.
âDon't be coy. They weren't exactly being truly helpful. Also, no one here is as,â You gestured to him with both hands. âVertically gifted as you.âÂ
He laughed at this and you got another flash of his pearly whites. âThat so?â
âI only speak the truth.â
âThat I see.â
âSo will you?â
âWill I what?â
You scoffed with a scandalized look, gesturing to the album. âHelp a damsel in distress?âÂ
He gave a playful hum and put his hands in his jean pockets, leaning forward a bit in his brown jumper that laid over a mustard yellow button up. âI'm not really the princely type, princess.â He teased and you slowly smirked. âI'm more in line with the monster.âÂ
âWell, kind monster, would you do your princess the kindness of grabbing her this single?â You hummed and he laughed. âMy princess?â
âIf you behave.âÂ
He looked you up and down before he walked over and grabbed the record, looking it over and holding it just out of reach as you tried to snatch it away. âWhat if I don't?â
You huffed and gave up on trying to swipe it, crossing your arms and biting your cheek. âThat's not a very gentlemanly thing to do.â
âI'm not a very gentlemanly person.â He gave you a look that had the alarm bells in your head sounding, but you bit your lip and nodded. âFine then. What would you like in return, hm?â
âYour name.â
âMy name?â You huffed and smiled once more. He nodded with a serious look, but a smile tugged at his lips.
â{Y/N}.â You introduced and held your hand out. âYou don't need my last name. You'll never have to call me it.â You remarked and his eyebrows raised in delight. âYeah?â
âYeah.â You mused as he handed you the record.Â
âAnd your name?â
âRemus. Guess I'll skip the last name too. But please, call me Moony.â He remarked and you nodded.Â
âUntil next time, Moony.â
âNext time, {Y/N}.â
The summer was absolute bliss. You spent it doing all the things your father hated about muggles. Running in fields and jumping in stray bodies of water, going to parties and drinking until you were sick. You kissed muggle boys, went to underground concerts, and even took enchanted pictures for yourself to keep.
Though, you didn't see that record store boy for the rest of the summer. Not from lack of trying, however, going to the store twice a week to try and snag a glimpse of him. Eventually you gave up and went back to your friends.
The next summer, you did see him again. This time, it was a month in, you were out late at a party, and were waiting for the bus to take you to the flat you had bought under a fake muggle name. Well, you say you bought, in reality you had been taking portions of money from your father and pureblood families that wanted your favor, from the start of the school year, saving up enough to be the spoiled girl you were.Â
You were standing under a street lamp, leaning against it as you pulled out a packet of cigarettes. You put it to your lips, just as you did, a voice called over to you. âNeed a light?â
You turned to face the boy who seemed to sneak up on you in alarm, before you slowly lit up at the sight of him. He seemed puzzled by your expression before recognition covered his features. âRecord store princess.â
âRecord store monster.â You cheeked and he walked over, leaning down to cover the end of your smoke from the wind, lighting it with a simple flick. You didn't even think about how you didn't hear the usual metallic click of a lighter, instead, a snap. That was how you lit them anyway.Â
âWhere have you been, pretty boy?â You asked after a long drag, and he watched you breathe the smoke out of your lungs, eyes lingering on your lips. This made you curl them to give him a better view. âAround.â
âSomething caught your eye?â
âSomeone.â He muttered and you pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, glancing at the bus station. âI'm heading home, to my flat. Care to make sure your princess gets home safe?âÂ
He chuckled at the bold offer, rubbing the back of his neck and wetting his lips. There was a pause as he thought about it. â... lead the way.â
That summer was somehow even better than the previous. He spent the night with you, that night, then every single other night. He came and never dreamed of leaving, only gone a handful of days for a few hours at a time for his summer job.
There was this amazing peace, waking up, laying in your stomach, hugging your pillows in your plush massive mess of blankets and pillows, with him. Most of the boys you brought back would be gone in the morning, you preferred it that way, but when you woke up to his arm around your bare back and his nose in the nape of your bruised and bite ridden neck, you couldn't dream of another outcome.
He joked, the second he saw the large canopy bed, about you letting monsters into your private quarters. He seemed to not think so highly of himself, but with every part of your skin he discovered, with every touch and sound he drew from you, he seemed to grow more confident in your situationship. It was dangerous, you knew it, this muggle boy had you wrapped around his finger. Judging by the way he looked at you when you would fall into the clouds of euphoria, he met the same fate.
You had never felt so content, going out and partying, coming home before he did, and spending your nights and afternoons together. With the odd exceptions of a few days out of the months, he was glued to you. Your friends teased you, but for once, you couldn't find it in yourself to be embarrassed. When school came, you had never felt so crushed. You spent the day before lingering in each other's presence without a word. The silence was enough.Â
When he brought you to bed, and your skin was pressed to his, his nose to your temple as he whispered sweet words of encouragement and pure infatuation, you were wreathing and gasping in short spouts, you muttered something that drew his rough movements to a stop. You hadn't even realized it, and he noticed how your eyes squished together and you whined with a huff. Fluttering open your eyes, staring up at his knee weakening hazels. He stared at you in silence and you slowly moved to sit up. It clicked to him, you hadn't even realized what you said. You'd never know that those three little words utterly destroyed him. Knowing that tomorrow he would be away from you again. He knew it would be hell.
He huffed and slowly pulled back. He began slowly, taking you in as if he was trying to commit you to memory. Every curve and blemish, every bit of scarred flesh he devoured with an open mouth kiss. You were lost once more to your own ecstasy.Â
He wanted to say it back so horribly.Â
He wanted you to know he loved you too.
~~~
You spent all of your sixth year waiting for summer, but when it came you dreaded it. Your father told you that you were to move back to London and resume your normal life in preparation for finding you a suitor.
He had promised your mother that he would wait until you were at least 20 to start, but her passing this year it seems he changed his mind. So you returned to business as usual, being enrolled in Hogwarts for your last year of schooling, and being undertaken by the Blackâs matriarch, Walaburga, to learn how to be a pureblood witch worth marrying.
Every day she would come to the Gaunt manor, quiz and train you on behaviors and etiquette. You hated those meetings, she was needlessly cruel and fake nice, to the point it was painful for you to watch her try and flatter and build your fathers ego. It made you sick. Soon, but not soon enough, the summer was over and at least you would be at Hogwarts and away from that sour faced woman.
~~
Remus had gone to your flat that summer, he stayed there for a week before he realized you weren't coming home. He hated it. He hated how you didn't tell him where you were, where you were going. There was this silent agreement between the both of you, You never told him where you would be and he never asked, Never exchanged much about your current personal lives, just the past. So if someone was to ask him where you were, he wouldn't have a clue. You promised him you'd see each other next summer, and that was enough.Â
At first his bitterness was winning, he wanted to believe you left without a word because you wanted nothing more than what you were that summer. Deep down, however, he knew. He knew by the way you looked at him in the morning, how you would pull him into the middle of the room in your socks and his shirt, like it was a dress on you, twirling around and slow dancing to that record he got you the first time you met. You always got what you wanted, and Remus knew he was what you wanted. When he left, he set a paper folded up between the door and the wall, a simple but desperate note. He needed you.
So when he got back to Hogwarts, he was a wreck. His friends noticed immediately. When he sat on the train, and looked out the window instead of shoving his nose in a book or teasing the others together.
âMoony, you good man?â James spoke up first after the three shared awkward looks.Â
âYeah dude, you look like a kicked puppy. Or James when Lily isn't looking at him.â Sirius tried to joke, looking through his suitcase before he paused and his eyes widened.
Remus was suddenly filled with dread. âDon't-â
âLet me guess, the cool girl you met last summer didn't show up this time? Told you, muggle girls her age are crazy.â Sirius laughed, not looking up, only to get jabbed harshly in his side with Jamesâ elbow. Sirius hissed and held his side, looking at James with a glare before James flicked his eyes to Remus.
Sirius looked over and saw just how broken up Remus seemed to be about it. He sighed and gave him a pained sympathetic look. Watching as Peter took out a chocolate bar and handed it over to Remus. He muttered a thank you and took it. Sirius sighed and shook his head. âLook, I'm sorry dude. I don't mean it.â
âIt's fine.â Remus answered quickly. âI was surprised she even gave me the time of day. I guess I always have that summer. I'll be over it in time, I'm sure she isn't missing me as much, as I'm moping over her, maybe that will help me get over it.â
He tried to believe that. He really did. His words were coming out low, he tried to sound wise but he truly sounded pathetic. He felt pathetic. She was all he could think about. From the train, to the carriages, to the Great Hall. Lily saw him and gave him a pout, he had written to her over the summer about what had happened. He wanted her perspective about what had happened, where he could have gone wrong, and out of the thirty he sent her she responded in kind to all of them. She walked up to him, straight past James which left the tall boy to theatrics.Â
âSirius did she just-â James gasped and clenched his chest.
âShe did, James, she did.â Sirius walked up behind him with a smirk.
âDoes she love me anymore?â He turned to Sirius and the shorter boy snickered.
âI don't think so, Jamie. I'll always love you, though.â Sirius indulged his theatrics and caught James (totally not with a struggle, totally smooth, Sirius is very strong) and James gasped. âYou will, won't you, pads?â
âAlways, my love.â Sirius declared his affections and James fanned his face like a swooning Victorian debutante. Lily rolled her eyes so hard she swore they would fall from her face.Â
She turned back to Remus who gave her a painful smile. âI left her a note like you suggested.â
âAnything?â
âNothing.â Remus sighed and she nodded carefully.Â
âI'm sure there is more to it, Remus. Don't let it consume you.â Lily tried to reassure him and he sighed again, making James and Sirius catch up as they sat down.Â
âYeah, there are a million girls in the world!â Sirius tried to cheer him up and both Lily and James winced at that.
âNone of them are like her.â Remus sighed and Sirius gave an owl-like look and then gave a breath of shock. â... Damn Remus, that much, huh?â
He groaned and hit his head on the table. âI just want to sleep.â
âWe could always ditch the sorting ceremony.â Lily tried to nudge him, he seemed to smile at her a bit at the offer.Â
âYeah, but then you'll miss a seventh year being sorted.â Peter piped up and the four of them snapped over to look at him.Â
âWhat? Seventh?â She asked as she looked up at the kids in front of the hall, before she bit her tongue. âRight.. that Gaunt girl every Slytherin is losing their mind over?âÂ
Sirius choked on his pumpkin juice before he quickly cleared his throat as James patted his back. âWoah mate!â
âHer! My mom was tutoring her all summer. Regulus told me. That girl, trying to be the perfect bride or some shit? Just another spoiled pureblood.â Sirius huffed and Lily gave a faint nod. âI hate to agree, but apparently she's the worst.â
âOf course, she's the Slytherin heir.â Sirius huffed. âApparently she went to Dumstrung, and you know how awful they are.â
âAh.â Lily mumbled and her eyes landed on you past the crowd, nudging Remus. âThere she is. Oh Merlin, spoiled and pretty? Dangerous combination.â
Remus sighed and looked over as you sat on the chair. His entire body froze. âAhh! {Y/N} Gaunt! Slytherin!âÂ
The hat didn't hesitate. You had a calm blank expression you were tutored on all summer. Looking across the students, almost bored. You stood up and dusted off your robes, before you froze up at the sound of your name being shouted across the hall.
Remus didn't think. He saw you and shot up from his seat. Lily looked at him, startled, looking between the two before her eyes widened at the name. Oh Merlin.Â
Sirius was bewildered, James was stunned, and Peter hid his face away from the crowds of students who turned to look at Remus. He got a variety of different looks from everyone, but there was a running theme. Who do you think you are? Talking to Gaunt.
â{Y/N}.â He called again, firmer. You looked like a deer in headlights. Staring at him in a stunned silence before one of the girls you met on the train tugged at your sleeve. You glanced at her and by the time you looked back, Remus was rushing across the hall to you. No no no no no.
âFuck.â You hissed and snatched your sleeve from her. You watched as he closed in on you. You felt every hair on your neck stand up. âFuck fuck.â You whispered.
You panicked. And you ran. He was stunned and froze on the spot. You ran straight out of the hall. Remus cursed and turned to his friends, then to the professors. Lily tried to stand and bring him back to sit down, but as if he was a wild animal, the movement gave him a rush of adrenaline. What did he do? What did this absolute stupid and love sick fool do?Â
He ran after you. The entire hall was silent, even the professors stunned before his head of house yelled at him to sit down. He ignored them, turning the corner out of the hall and dashing down the hall he saw you run down.
The hall was quiet for a moment or two, before Lily spoke up. âI'll make it up to you, Professors!â She shouted back before she ran after the two.Â
âMe too!â James shouted and followed after her.Â
âI will not!â Sirius laughed and ran after them, Peter looking at the shouting professor before she made eye contact with him. Peter slowly sat up and she gave him a warning glance, before he quickly scrambled after his friends.Â
McGonagall could only sigh as Dumbledore stifled a laugh into his sleeve.

i need to write a fic where albus and scorpius start dating but albus hasnât told his family yet and they end up spending some of summer together and james proposes a scheme to do together because he feels guilty about not being a better brother to albus.
and james, being slightly oblivious, thinks albus sees scorpius as a brother and out of guilt and his desire to prove that he really does care about his little brother he keeps pushing to spend more time with him but it just comes across like he doesnât like scorpius.
and albus, thinking that james hates scorpius, is super nervous to tell his family about them dating because he thinks james will be mad.
rose and lily know exactly whatâs going on on both sides but neither with intervene because; rose doesnât think itâs right to meddle in their relationships and thinks they should sort it out and; lily sees this as an opportunity to cause chaos.
hugoâs vaguely aware of whatâs going on but is mostly interested in helping lily cause problems.
teddy is the only one who knows about albus and scorpius dating and jamesâ fears from the people themselves and is the person they defer to for advice. unfortunately for them, teddy has decided to play the role of âolder sibling that encourages your worse impulsesâ
harry: the children are getting along really well actually :)
teddy, staring out the window at the children recreating lord of the flies in real time: yeah theyâre getting along so well :)
