On August 1, 1944, white employees of the Philadelphia Transit Company (PTC) launched a strike to protest the company’s decision to promote eight Black workers to the position of trolley driver—a job previously reserved for white men. The Black men were promoted after President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Orders 8802 and 9346, which prohibited companies with government contracts from discriminating on the basis of race or religion and required companies to include a nondiscrimination clause in their contracts.

As the U.S. prepared to enter World War II in the 1940s, Philadelphia quickly became one of the country's largest war production sources. As many as 600,000 workers relied on the PTC to get to their workplaces, including many factories. The strike threatened the entire city's ability to function and severely hampered critical wartime production.

White PTC employees James McMenamin, James Dixon, Frank Thompson, and Frank Carney led the strike and threatened to maintain the protest until the Black workers were demoted. The strike grew to include over 6,000 workers, prevented nearly two million people from traveling, and cost businesses almost $1 million per day.

On the strike's third day, President Roosevelt authorized the War Department to take control of the PTC. Two days later, 5,000 U.S. Army troops moved into Philadelphia to prevent uprisings and protect PTC employees who crossed the picket line. Despite the military presence, the confrontation resulted in at least 13 acts of racial violence, including several non-fatal shootings.

After more than a week, the strike ended when PTC employees facing threats of termination, loss of draft deferments, and ineligibility for unemployment benefits chose to return to work without achieving their goal of blocking Black workers' opportunity for advancement. By September 1944, the PTC’s first Black trolley drivers were on duty.

Simple question: so what happened to James Dixon?

Everyone talks about him in the past tense, like he died. And apparently a decade ago 'somebody' posted a memorial page about his 'suicide', but that memorial reads like Dixon wrote it himself. Over the top, bombastic, even a little silly. But not intentionally silly. Sad silly. Conventional wisdom is that he got tired of getting banned from every Trek forum in existence and staged his own death.

I won't link to the memorial page because it has a graphic death photo (itself a Dixonesque touch) but you can read about him here.

Last mention I can find of the man is 2012. It's now eleven years later, so... is it safe to assume he's really dead?

James Dixon was legend.  There have been books that put episodes and movies, and sometimes even the novels into chronological order.  But the James Dixon Fandom Star Trek Chronology #17 goes so much deeper.  If a book has a throwaway reference to an event a few weeks before, it's in there.  It covers every episode, movie or novel published up until the end of Enterprise's second season, as well as every technical publication whether officially licensed or not.

And here's where the first problem lies.  According to modern Trek canon, Kirk is born in 2233 and his 5-year mission ended in 2270.  But because unofficial fan published works had Kirk's birth in 2229 and the 5-year mission end in 2265, that's how it is in his chronology and that renders it questionable as a reference work.  And since Star Trek: Enterprise did it's own thing ignoring decades of lore in novels and fanworks, it's labelled as an alternate timeline.  In other words, obscure fan-published stuff (most of which was shut down by Paramount in the mid-90's, since it was profiting off of their IP) was given more weight than new Star Trek shows and movies.

And that brings us to the second problem: James Dixon's social interaction issues.  He rants and raves A LOT in his Chronology notes.  I originally thought it was satire, a parody of a crazy obsessed fan.  But having spoken to him and seen his interactions with others, I realised it was 100% serious.  He detailed how he'd like to kill me on a fake memorial page site he made to himself after I explained to him the real-life reasoning between Next Gen-era technical manuals contradicting TOS/classic movie era ones (it came down to money of course and who it went to).  And after being banned from TrekBBS, he started the (now defunct) Terok Nor Promenade, where he was all the members.

His chronology is an amazing one-of-a-kind work, a loving tribute to Star Trek like none other, and the notes at the end engrossing and led me to things like the Best of Trek books and various fan-produced manuals I'd never heard of but now adore (and post many pages from on this tumblr).  Something tells me the Kelvin movies, Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks would have given him a stroke.

You huffed as you adjusted the bags and boxes that laid in your arms. You hobbled up the stairs in your heeled boots, kicking for them with each step to prevent yourself from falling.

You had been working for Chris for about a month at this point and you had slotted into the work space nicely, making friends with everyone as well as being named a fan favourite already.

The footsteps of another person echoed through corridor of the office building and you poked your head up over the boxes to see a man walking towards you with a dog in his arms.

The man looked up spotting you struggling to juggled the copious amount of stuff in your hands, “Uh, need a hand?” He asked in a northern english accent making yours ears perk slightly.

“If you’ve got the time.” You smiled looking up at him.

The man placed the dog on the floor and grabbed the top 4 boxes and one of the bags leaving you with two bags and a box to carry.

“Where you headed?”

“Just to Chris’ office.” You nodded to the office at the end of the corridor and the man hummed walking off with the small dachshund pattering after him.

You gnawed at your bottom lip awkwardly not knowing if you should make conversation with the stranger as you walked together.

“You’re Chris’ new assistant, yeah?” He asked, looking back at you and you replied with a nod.

“Yeah,” you muttered, “What’s your dogs name?”

“His names Basil.”

“Cute,” You smiled looking down at the dog, “Like Basil Brush.”

The person let out a small laugh as he nodded, “Exactly.”

You both reached Chris’ office and you rushed forward opening the door holding it for the stranger and just nodded to the closest desk, “You can just put them there.”

The man nodded placing the down and then grabbing the stuff that You was still holding putting them on the desk as well.

“Thank you…” you trailed off realising she didn’t catch his name when they first interacted.

“Will.”

“Well, thank you Will.”

“Anytime,” He muttered looking down at the notebook on the table, “y/n?”

You flashed him a coy smile and Will nodded before whispering for Basil to leave you alone as the dog sniffed around your feet.

You crouched down letting the dog sniff your hand before stroking him, “It was nice meeting you, Basil.” You said to the dog jumping up on your knees making you chuckle before you looked up at Will through your eyelashes, “You too Will.”

“See you later.” He nodded with a lopsided smile before leaving the office with the dog right behind him running between his legs.
