This is how Twisters (2024) could have been done in a God honouring way:

Jeremy Allen White plays Dr. Reed Harding, the storm chasing son of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. His partner in science and navigator is Simone Ashley, a meteorologist studying for her PhD. For the sake of simplicity, her character is also called Kate Cooper, just like in the new film.

Reed is madly in love with Kate, but the mere thought of confessing this to her claws at his fraying sanity, dredging up painful memories of his father's sudden death. Grief grips him, suffocating, almost addicting. He can't bear to suffer the same fate as his mother, left to storm chase without her soulmate. So he keeps his true feelings buried deep within, afraid to expose himself to the pain he would feel if he lost Kate.

Their ragtag-bunch-of-misfit-scientists is comprised of Anok Yai (in her debut acting role), Abbey Lee Kershaw, Milly Alcock, Manny Jacinto, and the one and only Danai Gurira. Meanwhile, Eric Bogosian plays the leader of another storm chasing team. He is a respected father figure to Reed and the rest, giving them all scientific and safety advice.

And now that everything is organized, we can begin.

Our film does not start with Reed; instead, we open on Kate. She is a young girl enduring a sweltering hot day at home with her mother somewhere in the American Midwest. It's the 1990s, and her mum is wearing incredible jeans (which I believe is worth mentioning. Women in the ‘90s wore jeans like nobody else.)

We take our time to build suspense: the wind picks up, wind chimes whirl (in a nod to the original), the tv with news of the oncoming storm flickers, screen doors slam, and curtains snap and billow. Kate's mother rushes outside, frantically securing loose objects in preparation for the impending chaos. She asks Kate to go back inside, but Kate is rooted to the spot, fixated on something in the distance.

Kate: "Mummy ... who is that man?" Kate's mother: "What man, honey?"

Kate's mother follows her daughter's curious eyes to the horizon. There is no man standing there. But there is a tornado--a Dead Man Walking tornado. (Maybe the film is called Twister: Dead Man Walking. Maybe not. We can workshop it. )

[The phrase "Dead Man Walking" is commonly used to describe the appearance of some multi-vortex tornadoes. The multiple vortices look and move in such a way that the tornado appears as though it is walking. The expression is often associated with the 1997 Jarrell tornado due to a famous documentary, although it has been used to describe other tornadoes as well. The photo above is of the Jarrell tornado "Dead Man Walking." The gif below, I believe, is from the El Reno tornado which killed the TWISTEX team. RIP Tim, Paul, and Carl.]

Here is when their town's siren starts wailing, and our action sequence begins. Kate's mother is appropriately terrified. Quickly, she gathers Kate and their dog and rushes to the car. She knows they are facing an F5 Tornado and that without getting underground, they will not survive. The problem is the only underground shelter Kate's mother knows is at a neighbour's house. And they need to get there. Fast.

I don't need to break down the action sequence beat by beat. You know the drill. Kate, her mother, and their dog are caught up in the tornado, but they make it to shelter and survive. As they emerge from their hiding spot underground, they discover that the entire town has been destroyed, including their house, wiped off the face of the earth. Begin opening credits and then cut to decades later, when Kate is an adult in love with extreme weather and chasing with Dr. Reed Harding, who she is in love with too.

(I'll have to do a Part Two as this got away from me. But the general idea for the plot is the same as the original. The team encounter tornadoes in order of increasing intensity. The first tornado we encounter (besides the F5 tornado which opens the film) is an EF-1, the next tornado is an EF-2, and so on. The last tornado of the film is another Dead Man Walking Tornado, an EF-5.)

Aaron Zulpo has captured the beauty and quiet of the desert in his enchanting paintings for California Deserts at 1969 Gallery.

Following his relocation to California, Zulpo’s interest in landscape painting has expanded and become a pivotal aspect of his studio practice. This change has inspired a new series of sensitively observed landscape paintings of the American West. He begins his work in plein air during exploratory hikes through rugged desert terrain. Zulpo’s connection to the land imbues his paintings with a sense of reverence.

In California Deserts, the artist presents a series of recent paintings whose subjects range from the canyons of the Santa Ana Mountains, to the peaks of Mount San Jacinto, to the boulders and century-old Yuccas of Joshua Tree National Park. Zulpo captures the changing atmospheric and lighting conditions of the desert sky, as exemplified in works such as Quail Mountain Dust Storm and Joshua Tree with a Red Sky, bathed in golden, peach, and auburn tones that evoke the allure of the desert at sunset. Other paintings, such as Looking at Maze Loop from Quail Springs, highlight the uniquely expressive quality of cloudforms, which appear, at times, to mirror the craggy rocks below.

Drawing inspiration from early twentieth-century landscape painters, such as Rockwell Kent and the Canadian Group of Seven, Zulpo presents a serious and sustained engagement with the natural world. At the same time, he brings a twenty-first century environmental consciousness to the landscape tradition, calling attention to the inherent virtue and beauty of wild spaces and the need to preserve them.

In 2017, Aaron Zulpo and Johnny DeFeo co-founded The Guild of Adventure Painters. This non-profit organization aims to keep nature at the forefront of the arts by offering residency programs, community building initiatives, exhibitions and public events. Since its inception, The Guild of Adventure Painters has been dedicated to inspiring artists to immerse themselves in the outdoors, cultivating a deeper connection with nature and playing a vital role in its preservation.

tldr; At his core, Lorenzo is a kind, understanding man, so deeply desperate to be loved and liked and affirmed. He oscillates rapidly between arrogance and self-doubt, oftentimes completely blurring the two. He tries to be funny, to keep people smiling, but often neglects himself in that regard. Not great at being vulnerable or emotional, actually actively avoids it. Enjoys going out for rides, training, hunting, fishing, sailing. Incredibly soft on the inside, takes everything very personally, and is deeply guided by emotion- even if he mistakes it for logic.  

backstory: “I think you know how to love better than any of us. That’s why you find it all so painful.” It is a curse to have so much you long to forget, when you remember everything so vividly. The Tolentino household was a battlefield, and from an early age, their father made it clear that there was always a winner and a loser, no matter how low the stakes. A home where affection was earned, not given freely. A home where love was a privilege that could be taken as easily as it was given. A home that turned Lorenzo and his brother into rivals, not family. A home that only felt the suffocating fog of their father lift after their mother did what Lorenzo wished he had the courage to do.  Life with their new family was better, even if he found himself caught in the same cycle. He never knew why he’d always go running back to the source of his pain, as if the table scraps of affection he received from the emperor would ever be enough to feed him. Convinced he could earn the pride and love of the emperor if he could just be enough, Lorenzo joined the Chinese navy the moment he was of age. For years, he was devoted to making something of himself, and by the time he was 35, he’d seen the world, garnered respect from his fellow sailors, and become a war hero. For a moment- no matter how brief impossible- he believed he’d return home to a joyous welcome.  After spending time away from the navy at Lal Qila, Lorenzo decided he’d been away from court long enough, and would seek to collect on the decades of goodwill he had been planting. Bringing his most trusted friend for support, he approached the emperor to ask if he could return home, take a job at court, have a marriage arranged, and live a life as a prince, son, and brother, not a soldier. The conversation devolved into an argument, and it wasn’t long before the emperor recognized his stepson’s seething anger, daring him to do something, fully convinced the boy he'd raised to be subservient would back down. He did not.  Swords were drawn, and the two traded a few blows, but when he could have taken the deciding strike- one that would have disarmed the emperor, rather than killed him- he hesitated. Suddenly, he was a little boy, staring at his step-father, desperate for his love, physically unable to harm him. In that moment of hesitation, the emperor dealt a heavy blow to Lorenzo. Upon hearing his sword clatter to the ground, his friend stormed in, ready to defend intervene. When Lorenzo found his feet again, he realized his step-father would not stop, that someone would not be leaving the room alive. When the fight was over, he felt some relief- he had not turned into his father. He had turned into his mother.   Lorenzo, horrified at what had transpired, resolved to admit his actions to the new emperor immediately. But before he could make it to Angelo’s chambers, he and his friend were caught by a frenzied guard and ushered to a safe place, told that a group of rebels had stormed the palace- an event later termed The Reckoning.  In their hideaway, Lorenzo and his friend devised a story. The emperor was dead- there was no changing that- but the universe had handed them grace. Who were they to deny it? The story practically told itself: an emperor cornered but still fighting, attempting to defend himself, and struck down by the shadowy, nameless enemies. It was a story that was easy to believe after the horror of the Reckoning. 

now:  Lorenzo is struggling to reconcile his feelings of guilt, relief, and more surprisingly- grief. He is still desperate for love, still desperate for affection, still unsure what it means to look for those things in the darkest, most dangerous places. And though he loves his brother with every ounce of himself, he has started to recognize the look in his eyes and the games that he plays. Slowly, but surely, he is realizing the emperor is not worthy of his title. Lorenzo hasn’t acknowledged the idea as more than a passing thought, but part of him is wondering why Angelo should stay on the throne at all. Wondering why he couldn’t make a better emperor. Lorenzo is a kicked dog who has finally realized he has teeth- and they are sharp.

When I Close My Eye, I Dream About Mountains (Joshua Tree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at Keys View and looking to the west-southwest across a mountain desert landscape with some snow still present from a recently storm. This is in Joshua Tree National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of the dead, fallen tree and use that to add to the setting in the image captured with the ridges and more distant snowcapped peaks of several mountain ranges in southern California. With the sun behind me, I felt I was able to capture more details, from near to far, including more in the peaks of the San Gorgonio Mountain and San Jacinto Mountains. The rest of the image composition was then a matter of aligning myself to find that angle with the tree, ridges, and mountain peaks. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Storm system lingers over Southern California on Easter Sunday

Southern California is experiencing on-and-off rain on Easter Sunday, with some beaches briefly closed because of lightning strikes and a chance of thunderstorms forecast through the night.

A flood watch is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Los Angeles County, with a high surf advisory at the county’s beaches until 9 p.m...

Several daily rainfall records were set on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Downtown Los Angeles set a record with 1.73 inches, breaking the record of 1.27 inches in 1946. LAX received 1.87 inches, surpassing 1946’s .86 inches. Long Beach Airport set a record with 1.86 inches, breaking the record of .24 inches set in 1978. Palmdale and Lancaster also set records with 1.12 inches and 1.08 inches, respectively.

In Orange County, Anaheim set a record with 1.40 inches, compared to 0.03 in 2008. Inland, Riverside’s record on Saturday was 0.84, toppling 0.60 in 1946, and San Jacinto’s rainfall hit 0.95, up from the .40 record set in 1982...

At least 178 people have been rescued from homes and vehicles in Harris County, Texas, an official said Saturday, with more rain expected over the weekend in the wake of strong storms and downpours that damaged homes and triggered evacuations.

No deaths or serious injuries have been reported, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo told CNN, adding more than 100 pets have also been rescued during a deluge that has left livestock stranded.

“It’s been really sad to see the impact of people’s livelihoods, homes, infrastructure as well as just the public infrastructure,” Hidalgo told CNN Saturday.

“We’re really asking folks to give it a minute before they go back home.”

Most of the weekend rain will fall over western and central Texas, but a chance of heavier rain returns for the greater Houston area on Sunday. The heaviest downpours in central Texas will occur upstream of the flooding in Houston – which is located in Harris , potentially exacerbating flooding in a region where 12 river gauges have reached major flood stage.

This week’s storms were just the latest in a series of brutal weather events that have pounded the state since early April. Dozens of tornadoes have hit from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast, some areas of the state have been pounded with softball-sized hail and months of rain has fallen in East Texas in intense spurts, causing rivers to rise to levels not seen since the devastating floods of Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The Storm Prediction Center issued a tornado watch for southwestern Texas – including San Angelo and Del Rio – until 10 p.m. local time. Severe thunderstorms capable of producing a few tornadoes, hail as large as grapefruit and damaging winds up to 70 mph are possible across the region this afternoon and evening, according to the center.

“The risk for a strong tornado may maximize during the late afternoon to early evening timeframe,” the center warned.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect from southeastern New Mexico into northwestern Texas until 10 p.m. local time. It includes Abilene and Midland in Texas, and Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The forecast comes as some communities north of Houston picked up nearly two months’ worth of rain Thursday. This rainfall plunged roadways underwater and forced rivers to overflow, leading to evacuations and water rescues.

Here’s what’s happened in South Texas Friday evening:

• San Jacinto County, 60 miles north of Houston: About 100-200 homes are affected by floodwaters and mandatory evacuations are in effect. The event is “85% worse than Hurricane Harvey,” Emmitt Eldridge, the county’s emergency management coordinator, told CNN. Eldridge said since they are downstream from Dallas along the Trinity River, “we are expecting to see a lot more water” because of additional rainfall. “Anything they deal with, we deal with,” he added. According to Eldridge, there have been at least 58 water rescues in the county so far. More rain is expected in the area next week.

• Walker County, about 70 miles northwest of Houston: Authorities are calling the floods historic there as well. “This has been a historic flood for Walker County. We have flooded more from this event than we did during Hurricane Harvey,” Sherri Pegoda, Walker County’s deputy emergency management coordinator, told CNN. According to Pegoda, two communities are underwater along the Trinity River and are only accessible via high-water vehicles. “Almost all roads in Walker County were completely submerged Monday night and into Tuesday,” Pegoda said. “We still have approximately 43 roads that are flooded with several major washouts and a couple of bridges that have been compromised.” At least 42 high-water rescues have been performed in the county since April 28, she added.

• Polk County, about 80 miles northeast of Houston: Roughly 700 homes have been flooded, according to emergency management officials, who warned additional rainfall could keep flood levels on the rise in the coming days. A total of 1,000 homes are in a mandatory evacuation zone in the county, Polk County Judge Sydney Murphy told CNN. A flood warning remains in effect Friday for the County. The judge said they were concerned and keeping an eye on what was happening north of the county with the flooding because it would impact the area. “Due to continuous rainfall across East Texas and rising levels in creeks and rivers, flood levels may increase. Please remain aware of changing flood levels along the Trinity River and ALL low-lying levels. If you wish to evacuate, please do so now!,” the emergency management office recently said in a Facebook post.

• Harris County, which also includes several northern Houston suburbs: Mandatory evacuations have been in place since Thursday for residents on the east side of the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. The river hit major flood stage on Thursday and is forecast to crest Saturday morning just a few feet shy of the record level during Harvey. “We want you out of this area… this is a life-threatening situation,” Hidalgo said at a newsconference. The level of water rise anticipated will impact elevated structures and may rise to reach rooftops or power lines, according to Hidalgo.

In the Harris County suburb of Crosby, a school bus driver spotted flooding over a road that had not yet been barricaded, stopped the bus and had the middle and high school students on board exit through the rear door, according to a statement from the school district. Another bus brought the students to school, where they were provided with breakfast and dry clothes, the statement added.

• Liberty County, about 45 miles northeast of Houston: The Coast Guard transported a 12-hour-old baby girl by helicopter from Cleveland, Texas, Friday. The girl was experiencing low oxygen levels at Texas Emergency Hospital, which does not have a neonatal intensive care unit, according to a news release from the Coast Guard. Due to flooding, she could not be transported by ambulance on the ground. The helicopter took the girl and her mother to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where the baby was reported to be in stable condition, the release added.

Voluntary evacuations due to flooding were also in place for Montgomery County, just to the north of Harris County.

Disaster declarations are active for over a third of Texas counties after Gov. Greg Abbott expanded the storm-related declarations in response to the flooding, according to a news release. Additional counties could be added in the coming days, particularly with more storms in the forecast.

Parts of eastern Texas have received anywhere from three to seven times their typical rainfall over the last three to four weeks. The repeated bouts of heavy rainfall soaked soils, making many areas extremely prone to both flash and river flooding. Nearly a foot of rain fell in some spots from Thursday to Friday morning, delivering the final blow. Periods of rain will continue through Friday evening, and an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible.

The worst flooding is confined to southeastern Texas where at least a dozen river gauges – including parts of the San Jacinto and Trinity rivers – are in major flood stage, the highest level, as of Friday morning. Several more sites are forecast to experience major flooding by the weekend and could meet or exceed record levels set during Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey created a widespread flooding disaster in Houston after dropping 30 to 40 inches of rain across the entire metro in just 48 hours. While this week’s ongoing flooding is notable, it’s much less widespread and occurring north of where Harvey’s worst rain fell.

Powerful storms rolled across the state

As torrential rain flooded eastern Texas, severe thunderstorms spun up tornadoes both north and south of the Abilene area in west Texas. There were eight reports of tornadoes Thursday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

A “large and extremely dangerous” tornado impacted the towns of Hodges and Hawley – about 10 miles north of Abilene – Thursday evening.

Around 30 homes in Hawley were shredded by the tornado’s winds, with entire sections of some homes left completely exposed. Cars in the area also sustained damage from flying debris. There were “numerous” injuries, but no deaths as of Friday morning, Hawley Police Chief Brad Wilson told CNN.

At least one area school district is allowing students to study from home or take time to recover Friday, following Thursday evening’s damaging tornado.

“The Hawley community has been hit pretty hard and we have several families that have lost homes,” the Hawley Independent School District said in a Facebook post.

Rainfall totals from flooding in Texas and Louisiana this week showed nearly two feet of rain in five days, according to the National Weather Service. Totals ranged from 23.56 inches in Groveton, Texas, to 18.42 inches in Livingston, Texas.
