However. however. hes shown in both very small interactions when you meet him and during the actual fight to be a competent, strategic hero who cares about the people. as step points out, when the puppet stumbles over him his immediate reaction is to treat them like somebody who needed help. during the fight, he first takes the time to strategize, making sure to dial back his powers to make sure nobody gets hurt– to the point that he hinders himself. even chen says that blaze always had careful control, to the point where if you fry him in the meeting room, chen suspects somethings up.

hes also surprisingly reasonable about step, giving serious thought to what they say and do regardless of how cruel of a villain they are. yeah ok ortega has the 'sympathetic' villain relationship status but does that really do anything about his perceptions of them??? he still readily calls them a monster during the villain reveal. meanwhile it takes one(1) conversation with blaze to get him questioning his bosses, and it literally does not matter how many people youve killed, he ends up pestering alvarez about it anyway. i firmly believe that hes put a lot more thought about the problems in the system he works under, even if he puts more faith in it than he should.

Hey, is your mind boggled by Trump's constant yapping about Hannibal Lecter? Never seen Silence of the Lambs and are invested in the trainwreck of American politics? Well have no fear. In their most political post yet, a Canadian whose special interest is The Silence of the Lambs (aka me) breaks down Trump's misunderstanding and obsession with Hannibal Lecter.

Basically, we have three major points:

1) Hannibal is coming across the border because the border is weak. Hannibal is bad.

2) Hannibal is a great actor, now dead, he eats jerks, and one time, he said he liked Trump. Hannibal is good.

3) Hannibal is currently in America. Which is bad because every mentally ill person in America could be Hannibal. Hannibal is bad.

What Trump has not mentioned is the jerks Hannibal eats (this is important). Specifically, the version of Hannibal Trump is referring to is Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs. However, Trump has never said Hopkins' name, just the name of the movie movie. He knows it's a movie but somehow has not ever acknowledged that Hannibal is fictional, implying that a) he thinks everyone knows the name of the actor who played the Hannibal he's talking about (only in a perfect world, D-man) or b) he thinks Anthony Hopkins is Hannibal Lecter (soooo who does he think Mads Mikkelsen is? my mother asks).

Trump is clearly trying to make a metaphor with points 1 and 3. People like Hannibal, not Hannibal himself, are stalking America: immigrants and mentally ill people, sometimes both which is the scariest of all and which Hannibal canonically is.

However, because Trump never specifies a difference between Hannibal and Hopkins, it appears that he doesn't realize Hannibal is fictional at all and really does fear that he's either in America or coming to America to eat people. And yet, he keeps praising him? Why? Especially he's so scared of him, or the ideas he represents and is meant to represent so that we actually simultaneously fear and humanize him through the film's epic protagonist Clarice's eyes while Chilton hates him.

Let's talk about Chilton. In Silence of the Lambs, if you haven't seen it, Chilton is an abuser. He's the man in power at the asylum where Hannibal is. He is intended to be perceived as ableist, self-centered, and misogynistic (something more *ahem* modern adaptations I think have forgotten). At the end of the movie, Hannibal kills Chilton off-screen as revenge and it's...fantastic. It's meant to be.

Although Hannibal is a rich, white, cis man (definitely not straight though, I headcanon bisexual) and although he does horrendous things in this film (I cannot stress enough how disgusting he is), he is still being abused for his mental state. So him killing Chilton is basically the audience being put into the shoes of a revenge fantasy while the abused never learns his lesson of what it's like to be on the other end of that ableism (Hannibal isn't kind about his own patients he had when he was a psychiatrist). Trump recognizes that the ending is meant to be great. He praised Hannibal recently for it. But here's the thing: Trump is Chilton.

He's a misogynist, a preener, and importantly: someone who fears foreign mentally ill people and uses that fear and claim that only HE has the power to control these people to win votes and attention (Chilton does this, resulting in the iconic mask scene you've probably seen pictures of). But again- explicitly- Trump praised Hannibal for killing Chilton. So this leads to two theories that lead into two more theories:

1) Trump is secretly self-aware and knows deep down he's Chilton. But he pretends not to be so he praises Hannibal for killing him because, well, Chilton effing sucks.

2) Trump has no self-awareness and just feels the undertones of that epic final pun Hannibal says (and yes it's Hannibal's final line in the film) so he quotes it because he thinks it's cool and has no friggin clue what's really happening in the scene (this is the most likely theory imo).

Trump has also taps into Chilton by referring once to the Baltimore State Hospital in the film as a "mental hospital on steroids" (which he again recently said to describe irl asylums). He uses this as fear-mongering, to explain to Americans why asylums are necessary and why they should fear the borders being open: asylums are needed to keep these dangerous mentally ill people inside and they're ALL like Hannibal so when they're released...where do they go? In your neighbourhood.

Yet, he seems to love that damn final scene.

So again, Trump is aware it's a movie. But he still doesn't seem sure that Hannibal isn't a real guy. Chilton would never praise Hannibal so why is Trump?

And why the late great stuff?

Hannibal doesn't die at the end of the film and if you consider the 2001 Sequel That Shall Not Be Named canon (I don't), he doesn't die there either! So why all the warnings and then praising? Here are my next two theories and both could be true at this point:

1) Trump seriously does think Hannibal is a real person and that he and Anthony Hopkins are the same person. So he flops back and forth because he gets scared that Hannibal will come and eat him if he criticizes him too much. Thus, he says "he's great".

2) Trump genuinely has no clue what "the late great" actually means in the English language. I'm serious. He keeps saying "late great" because it sounds good, not because he knows what it actually means.

To top it all off, Trump covered all three of those points in the exact same speech. Plus, I don't think Anthony Hopkins has really ever endorsed Trump. He did an impression of Trump on TV once back in the 90s (he's good at impressions, autistic king) and I seriously think THAT'S what Trump is thinking about.

So what does this all mean? What's the grand conclusion?

Uhhh... I dunno. Trump saw Silence of the Lambs, and it scared the everloving shit out of him but he doesn't want to admit it and now America is in hell because he thinks Hannibal's gonna kill him? He thinks everyone is Hannibal now? That's all I got. I'm honestly surprised he hasn't roped Buffalo Bill (the other villain of the movie) into this what with America's current transphobia and all (please God I'm begging, don't let him bring Buffalo Bill into this).

Uhhh...if you read this far? Thanks. This is how I cope. All I gotta say is if you have the stomach, watch The Silence of the Lambs. Seriously, do it. Watch it chunks if you have to, sound down, with the lights on, in a safe place, any way you want to. I wish it was more palatable for people because it's a very important film, for better and for worse, and criticizes a lot of bullshit happening in the West right now. It's still very relevant...even if now for the wrong reasons (Trump).

It is less than 24 hours after the election and the whole day I have felt completely helpless. Like nothing I do can change what happens. I've been battling a sense of dread so overwhelming it feels as through I'm suffocating. As I sat in bed, scrolling through my social media, the feelings I've been experiencing began to bubble to the surface. I want to cry and scream and fight with every cell in my body. I want to do something. I need to do something. I've always through that my voice was only that. I signed petitions and voted and shared my support, but it never felt like it was enough.

I was wrong.

I believe that now more than ever we must all do everything we can to support one another, no matter how small it may seem. If sharing my thoughts helps even one person feel less alone, then its worth it. Right now, we need one another. We need to protect and comfort one another. We are on the verge of major change and it's terrifying. We need to be prepared.

I have a BA in English. Books have been my whole life. I follow publishing news and historical discussions on the classics. What I have revolves around books. this whole idea came about because i was seeing people complain about the pacing of the show and i was so confused because i thought the pacing was perfect and then i thought maybe it's because i have adhd and so of course i would think the pacing was great and so i ran a poll to look at the results and here are those results

i did a poll comparing if you have adhd and if you like the show, these were the results (and here so you can see how i wanted people to answer)

(yes i voted, my opinion also counts)(and yes, there are flaws in the design but i only had 12 options and this was mainly about adhd)

and idk about you but looking at those numbers i can see a few things

number 1: most people like the show, 87.8% in fact

and if you take out the people that didn't care, it's 92.9% of people who did care aka a lot

quick stats rundown

for everyone with adhd (thats the first 6 options) 3% didn't like the show

for those with other neurodiversities and not adhd, it was 12%

yeah, thats 4 times higher (it works out at a whole 2 people but again, limits of the poll)

ANYWAY, i ran some statistical tests (don't stress, i don't understand them either, i will not be focussing on them)

first, chi squared (compares expected values for each option with the actual values i got)

yeah that number is small, like very small, like 2.8 quintillionths

but i ran it in R and got a very different number

and oh lookie here that's a p-value about 0.05 and so we must accept the null hypothesis (basically that yeah, that's expected)

which makes NO SENSE but whatever, the computer tells me it's that

enough of chi-squared, i also ran a z-test (i googled what to do and apparently this was the right test, idk what it does ngl)

i didn't run this one in R bc i have no idea how to do that

but the p-value is again, about 0.05 and so accept that there is no significant difference

'Debating' someone like Trump on live TV isn't something a president needs to be able to do, but they'll focus on that gleefully and still never bring up all the left-leaning policies the Biden Administration has successfully pushed over the last 4 years or that were blocked by the fact Dems don't control congress, senate, or the supreme courts and

I am just begging people who haven't recently refreshed themselves on how the US system even is supposed to work to watch some stuff and refresh themselves.

Like, is the system pretty busted and rooted in shitty racist and classist shit? Yes, but it's not going to be fixed before this election, just like it isn't fixed before other elections because not enough people are willing to work for things like ranked choice voting in between election cycles.

But the system also isn't completely dead yet, and right now there's game plans and blueprints on how to at least survive within it- and how to push for changes in between big election cycles by voting the right people in during even smaller election cycles.

Those are the times you beef up third party ideals or whatever, because yes, right now, when the presidential election happens the only two choices that mean anything numerically for the electoral vote system are Republican and Democrat.

If you want to call that 'not a real election' or whatever, fine, but even if there's only two choices, one choice is still actively less harmful than the other, and if the only applicable choices in a shitty election have differences, and electoral results actually have a chance of being honored even if the less awful side wins it's still actually an election that matters. Is it a shitty choice? Is it not much of a choice? It's still a choice, and it's still a difference that can be made.

Of course with Project 2025, the Republicans plan to finish gutting and rearranging the US government to suit their desire for a theocratic dictatorship, which means they are actively working to make elections completely irrelevant or end them entirely. There will no longer be even a map or blueprint for anyone who isn't a white heterosexual Christian (of the kinds of Christians they approve of, I will bet five dollars that once in office the evangelical protestant type Christians are going to start throwing other denominations under the bus, because five dollars is all I even have right now,) to follow.

All of the between-election activism and community support and service that needs to be done is already hard, too, yes, but it will be much harder if Trump, a guy who has literally talked about having protestors on college campuses shot or deported as Hamas sympathizers, and people who think like him and will unequivocally back him takes over.

There's no real choice, but if the Democrats control senate, house, and presidency, there's actually room for a choice to grow if people don't just give up the minute the election is over and actually seek and work towards the reforms that are desired.

If the GOP gets any more seats and the presidency, I cannot stress enough that we are probably going to be living in an actual, literal, dictatorship, which by all definitions, the US is currently not, despite what I see people trying to twist definitions around to say it is because a 2 party system isn't great.

I am just so tired right now, the lives of so many people, including those of people I know personally, are on the line with this vote. I've only just gotten to celebrate things the Biden administration has done for disabled Americans and yet I know that if Trump is elected, we're going to go immediately at least back to shit like 'people buying you food can reduce or stop your SSI' if not worse since the GOP are pretty open about wanting to axe Medicaid and disability with social security.

Biden's administration has put protections for LGBT people in at the federal level, and it is remaining state's rights shit that's keeping it bad in red states, which is complicated as fuck, but if the GOP get their way, their stripping out the idea of state's rights will go after the states that are sheltering trans people or providing abortion care and asylum.

Project 2025 and Trump have made a VERY big deal out of wanting to deport millions of people and have ICE raiding churches and schools. (Oh hey remember what I said about even other Christians are gonna get shat on if maybe they're inclusive or whatnot?)

And for that single issue: Yes, Trump will be worse for Palestine. Also worse for Ukraine, Sudan, and pretty much everywhere else there is a genocide happening.

There isn't a 'real' choice, is the argument, but there still is a choice, and it's one that has to be made to try and reduce harm and keep the boot from being so firmly on everyone's neck that no one can breathe well enough to fight it.

There also is not going to be a glorious revolution formed if Trump wins, there's going to be concentration camps, deportations, increased incarceration for profit, no social safety net at all, and more and more deaths including state-sponsored violence and murders. Facists like Putin, Bibi, etc will be emboldened and given more actual weaponry and support.

On paper maybe it sounds like something that makes a revolution happen in the US, but in reality it is far more likely that it further divides and crushes people into inaction.

Also in reality the US has a fucking huge military with drone strike capabilities and the Republicans will not hesitate to make the poor neighborhoods of any US city into craters, and groups of actual revolutionaries will be very scattered and isolated and much more poorly armed because the US is a big space- and there can be no counting on Canada, Mexico, or any other nations in the world for help. That'll be the start of WW3.

If there is a revolution against a GOP dictatorship it is not going to be glorious, it is not going to go well. It should not even be being considered as a preferred option by anyone who claims to be 'for the people' compared to harm reductive voting and then community activism and pushes for voting and government reform in a setting where there is still some freedom to do that.

I don't normally post too much about political stuff, let alone american politics, but as a Canadian I do have to worry about the only country I have a land border with devolving into facism.

The big thing is Republicans plan to completely take over the exdcutive branch of the United States of America by declaring that the President has total constitutional control of the executive branch.

The linked video only touches on the republican plan for if they win the election and gain power in 2025 and it is terrifying. No matter what you think of democrats, Americans, you have to know that they won't be pushing your country towards fascism like the republicans plan to.

I cannot stress enough how important it will be for you all to vote for democrats in November. If a country as powerful as the United States of America becomes a facist dictatorship I cannot see a world in which it doesn't have major consequences on the rest of the world.

This, but also a reminder that, in many ways, the president already has this power, but yes it will only worsen. That being said, I cannot stress enough that we ought to still be furious that the president has these powers at all and have had them without much criticism. I want to reiterate to be clear, I'm not dismissing the above or claiming that we "shouldn't worry", I'm saying the opposite; Trump is a huge concern and we should also be very worried about how this system works and how it has allowed a felon to run at all. That's something Trump didn't do, but it allows people like Trump to get in. We should be worried about both and act on both.

In fact a lot of politicians in the US (and western countries tied to the US) can also bypass laws (and have previously before), dismiss votes, and, most infamously with the US, not count votes due to the electoral college. Is important to recognise these issues and the fact they will continue to exist even if Harris gets in. Yes, worry about Trump, vote, but also protest and continue to act even as Harris gets in. Make it impossible for any president to have this power, for a convicted felon to run, or for war criminals to get in office. We can do that, we have a voice and the people joined together have so much power.

This year, we are at the breaking point in the intersection of law and politics where whether or not the President's team can outright commit crimes to consolidate his power and destroy his enemies is on the ballot and up for vote.

I know you were just giving your two cents, but please don’t discourage people (in the us in this case but also in general) from voting. I get that Harris isn’t a great choice, and has a number of things I disagree with, but compared to a fascist wannabe dictator who threatened to turn the military on its own citizens, I’ll take it. For some people it’s quite literally a matter of survival so please, if you are an eligible voter in the us please vote.

it honestly wasn’t my intention, i know that regardless of whether people vote or not an outcome will be decided and trump absolutely can’t be in office again. like i said, politics are important and voting for a president shouldn’t be the only action a person takes to make a stand politically, that’s why i mentioned local elections that a lot of people forget also directly affects them. but at the same time i understand the fatigue that comes with having a broken system where you never feel represented, especially when it comes to their stance on basic human rights. plus, there’s the stress and apprehension that comes with waiting for an outcome that will change so, so many lives, so i understand that anon’s discouragement. it’s also jarring to see people’s lack of nuance when it comes to supporting a presidential candidate, and i think it’s wrong to idolize any of them in the ways ive seen on the internet. i think both of those things can coexist, but of course i’d never tell anyone to not vote at all because it’s useless, there will be a president in november and if you can vote, vote right for sure. in this case it’s kamala. if it seems like im telling people not to vote i’ll go edit my reply so theres no confusion because i cannot stress this enough, go vote 😭 it’s once every 4 years, make the effort. i’ve exercised my right to vote since i turned 18 and i wish everyone did the same. the US elections dont only affect america, i think we’ve all seen how much power they hold in recent times so please, vote if you can

following up on Bruce finding a ten-year-old on his doorstep…  Damian isn’t really an Aquaman fan.

Damian did not take especially well to the other members of the League.  He seemed to find them either stupid (Arthur and Barry) or boring (Diana and Clark).  Victor was of some interest to him, as a technological marvel, if nothing else.  None of that was especially surprising to Bruce, given the boy’s general personality.

What was surprising was that, out of all of them, Arthur seemed to be the only one who took Damian’s disdain personally.

“Kids like me,” he asserted.  “I’m a likeable guy.”

“Damian isn’t a typical ten-year-old,” Bruce said.

Arthur scowled.  “I’mma take him surfing.  That’s cool, right?  Kids dig surfing.”

“He might,” Bruce conceded.  “Have him back before ten.”

Damian took decently to surfing, but still not to Arthur.

“Free diving!”

Damian was bored to tears.

“Parasailing!”

Damian loved it, but his opinion of Arthur remained unchanged.

“I’m sorry, Arthur,” Diana commiserated.

“Y’know what?  It’s fine.  I don’t have to be liked by everybody.  Nobody can be universally beloved, right?”

Barry chose that moment to wander through with the day’s paper, the front page of which declared that Superman had been voted the World’s Most Likeable Man by Gotham, Metropolis, and Coastal City.  “They picked a really nice picture, right?” Barry said blithely, and continued to the dining room.

Damian huffed a little sigh.  “Look, it’s just how you are.  Mom said you’re an air-headed surfer hippie gone wrong, and that the guy who’s trying to kill you is ten times more interesting.”  He shrugged.

“Damian!” Bruce yelped.

“What?  That’s what he said.”

“I cannot stress enough just how important it is that you don’t go around repeating Jay’s opinions of people.  And don’t just automatically agree with him.”

“It’s not automatic, Bruce—I have spent three evenings with this blunt instrument, and I read your file on David Kane.  Grandfather was always insistent that I verify any and all theories before lending them credence, and it is the finding of my independent investigation that Mom was right.”

“Please stop calling him that,” Bruce begged without much hope.

“Wow,” said Arthur.  “Kinda stings, but I’m not gonna let it get to me.  Barry still thinks I’m cool.”

“Sure,” Diana agreed, patting him on the shoulder as he stalked away.

“Barry doesn’t think he’s cool,” Bruce said.

She shook her head.  “Sexy, yes; cool, no.”
