Best Underrated Anime Group E Round 4: Are You Ok vs Moriarty the Patriot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#E1: Are You Ok (You Yao)
Transmigrators modernize ancient China. Chaos ensues.
#E4: Moriarty the Patriot (Yuukoku no Moriarty)
Gay found family criminals versus corrupt nobility
Tumblr media
#E1: Are You Ok (You Yao)
Summary:
People from the modern world transmigrating into the ancient Chinese fantasy world has become a common and everyday occurrence that the royal court in the latter has decided to moderate them. If you’re a transmigrator, you must report your existence to Lou Zhu, the master of Best Tower. Once you pass his test and prove that you are indeed a modern person, you can then be assigned to work in different areas of the government and be given a high salary.
Because of this promised benefit, many impostors have showed up before Lou Zhu. And one day, Zuo Yunqi takes this test as well. Is he an impostor, or is he an actual modern person?
But some transmigrators also choose to hide their existence out of distrust in the government. Where are they? And with their advanced knowledge on science and technology, what are they planning in the dark?
Elsewhere, other transmigrators find themselves in all sorts of situations—an art student is detained and forced to come up with a recipe for a poisonous meal, while another is stuck sharing a body with the original soul and fighting for its control. Meanwhile, unrest rises in the Jianghu and a storm brews in the palace. Can our transmigrators’ modern knowledge save the day? Or will their lack of understanding in the current world lead to their downfall?
Propaganda:
As someone who is in the You Yao and YuuMori fandoms and adores both for being very gay while still having a good plot, I’d say these two stories are tied in terms of quality. They both execute their respective genres well and really shouldn’t be pitted against each other. But since I absolutely have to choose, then I’m siding with You Yao for this round. The YuuMori anime is a bit lacking compared to its manga, whereas the You Yao donghua elevates the original novel and breathes new life into it.
I started both shows as an anime-only. While watching YuuMori, there was always this nagging feeling at the back of my mind that I was missing out on something. There were so many instances that seemed odd or abrupt. The “found family” gang felt forced, and Sherlock’s attachment and dedication to William seemed excessive in the episodes leading to the climax and even at the climax. It turns out the anime had cut out a chapter in the manga where Sherlock visited William at the college where he teaches. This was such a let-down for me because that chapter showed how the two interact outside of a crime scene and still be friends.
In contrast, the You Yao donghua was able to stand on its own. You don’t even have to read the novel anymore, which is surprising coming from someone like me who always advocates on experiencing the source material.
In the novel, arcs seem disconnected from each other that, while reading, you don’t get the feeling that there’s an overarching plot. It is only later in the story that everything starts slowly coming together.
Somehow, the You Yao donghua was able to take the scattered puzzle pieces of the novel and connect them all together to deliver a coherent story all the while still keeping the spirit of the original—a suckerpunching emotional rollercoaster ride masquerading as yet another comedy. Characters were also given more emotional depth, which is a plus because the novel only portrayed it subtly. Even the donghua-original characters were so likable that I had to double-check if they were canon.
The YuuMori anime has its good parts of course, but overall I think it could’ve done a lot better in terms of character relationships and pacing.
So yeah, both stories are equally good in each of their own genres. But on being an animated adaptation? You Yao takes the win. Vote You Yao.
Trigger warnings: Guns, kidnapping, and imprisonment. Nothing too dark, though.

#E4: Moriarty the Patriot (Yuukoku no Moriarty)
youtube
Summary:
During the late 19th century, Great Britain has become the greatest empire the world has ever known. Hidden within its success, the nation's rigid economic hierarchy dictates the value of one's life solely on status and wealth. To no surprise, the system favors the aristocracy at the top and renders it impossible for the working class to ascend the ranks.
William James Moriarty, the second son of the Moriarty household, lives as a regular noble while also being a consultant for the common folk to give them a hand and solve their problems. However, deep inside him lies a desire to destroy the current structure that dominates British society and those who benefit from it.
Alongside his brothers Albert and Louis, William will do anything it takes to change the filthy world he lives in—even if blood must be spilled.
Propaganda:
The story isn’t quite on par with the manga (solely due to there being not enough episodes to cover full character arcs), but the ‘eat the rich’ vibes are immaculate, the plot is complex and interesting, the queercoding and subtext are both wonderfully done, AND there is a CANON TRANS CHARACTER !!!!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Gender Identity/Sexuality Discrimination, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Rape/Non-Con, Self-Harm, Suicide

MILVERTON AS AN EMPLOYER
I analyzed Milverton as a villain a lot of times before, now I decided to analyze him what is he like as an employer.
Because I believe he is actually not bad as an employer.
We don't see him interacting with employees other than Ruskin - whom I will leave out now since their behaviour around each other is more than a simple working relationship - and his bodyguards. When it comes to his bodyguards, Milverton always showed respect towards them and surely paid them really well as they were actually loyal to the money and not to their boss. Beside them, Milverton employed servants in his household and at least, several hundred people as a businessman who owned lot of companies.
Let's look at what we can deduce about the servants first. We only see them during the plumbing incident in Two Criminals - and while they were panicking, but this was just general shock about the sudden water problems, neither of them were specifically afraid of that "the master will kill us when he comes home." (Agatha even had time to wander about which plumber is better looking).
Tumblr media
Sherlock's plan on breaking in to Milverton's house also wasn't about making the servants help them with offering them chance to get revenge on Milverton - Sherlock knew about the Milverton household circumstances, the fact that he couldn't use the servants help suggests that Milverton treated them well and they had no reason to get revenge. Here, I also want to mention that in the Conan Doyle story, Milverton several times made servants of other households to get letters for him he could use for blackmail, offering them revenge on their employers who mistreated them - Yuumori Milverton also surely use this method to get blackmail material, so to not let his enemies use the weapon he used, he needs to pay his servants well and treat them nicely.
Now, about the employees who work at Milverton's companies. While it's basically everyone's job description to manipulate the news to Milverton's will, he still gives jobs to quite a lot of people - and he surely pays them fairly as well. When the Moriarties first discussed Milverton, neither of them mentioned gossips about him mistreating his workers, there was no sign about him being evil. Beside, Milverton is a businessman and the way he chose his closer assistants - Ruskin and the bodyguards - shows that he values people by how much they fit to a job and not by if they are "fancy" enough in the eyes of the social circles he does business with. Even if Milverton views most of the people around him as tools - the people he employs are useful to him, he needs to treat them well to get use out of them in long term.
So Milverton as an employer is far from evil, quite the opposite: even if his intentions are just to not let the people know who he really is (if the public knows about his evil deeds, his business carreer is ruined) and to less likely be betrayed by his employees by not giving them reason to get revenge on him, he surely pays his workers well and treat them nicely. He wouldn't have his media power without journalists who write in his newspaper, after all.

Speculating a bit…
Yuukoku no Moriarty
I think, just a thesis, that it was between that case on the train and Irene Adler that William decided he wants Sherlock to be part – key figure – of his plan
Because prior to that, the case in which he tests Sherlock, he was offering Sherlock Holmes an in
What William offered him, information on who the great criminal is, was an invitation. If Sherlock Holmes had shot that man, like William set it up, then there were only two possible outcomes
Sherlock Holmes would join the Moriarty family – the Moriarty Pact
The Moriartys would need to “liquidate” Sherlock Holmes
It wasn’t just a test of Sherlock Holmes’ character, in the very same breath, it was an open invitation.
So, I think, prior to the murder on the train, William wagered with the idea of Sherlock Holmes joining their cause
He was still scrutinising Sherlock, still gauging who he is as a man, during that train case
There had to be one distinct point at which William decided how to proceed about Sherlock Holmes. The more likely one being the case around Adler, although it is possible that first ideas formed and solidified around their interaction on the train.
EDIT: in the manga canon it’s clear William already had his sights on Sherlock for his later role when he tested him with “A Study in ‘SH’”. This obviously influences what I said but I still think his repeated offerings towards Sherlock can be seen as William wanting him in the plan either way. Either as his chosen nemesis, his curated antagonist, or as part of the Moriarty Pact, in an active role Sherlock would be made aware of.
Because previously, with that chance of gaining Moriarty’s name. That offer of Sherlock committing one murder in exchange for such a valuable information, that would only leave Sherlock to join the Moriarty Pact or die.
But once the Irene Adler case happened, those documents affirmed the Moriarty Plan. Those documents solidified what the Moriartys had planned and it gave them a lead.
A red thread, if you will.
After the Irene Adler case, that was the point when William also locked Sherlock’s role into place. When he decided their whole plan would hinge on Sherlock Holmes.
Once their plan locked into place – because it was already set it motion and only gained a more determined shape through those documents – William had to have decided that he wanted Sherlock Holmes on the other side of it.
I assume William’s decision started to form earlier, someplace between that case on the train and Adler’s case.
EDIT: obviously between “A study in ‘SH’” and Adler’s case, considering where the manga draws attention to William having locked his sights on Sherlock
But then again there is the fact that even then, even as the case around Irene Adler set things into motion, William took a wager.
Moriarty’s name. The master criminal’s name. The true name of the Napoleon of Crime.
Quite literally handing that to Sherlock Holmes, full-well knowing Irene Adler would die… I think that was a final test.
William took a bargain, the chance of Sherlock opening that letter when he heard of Adler’s death was not zero. It wasn’t likely, for Sherlock to snap and open the letter, but there was no insurance. The chance never was zero
I think that was the final olive branch. Like how they showed Adler what James Moriarty is capable of, that letter was a final invitation extended to Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes refusing, burning that letter, it was what sealed the plan.
Sherlock Holmes himself sealed himself into that role William Moriarty wrote for him. That role William tailor-made for Sherlock Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes alone, to fulfil.
Obviously, later on, Sherlock defied expectations any way. And thoroughly so. But without knowing it, he made himself one of the key components of the Moriarty Plan.
And this is entirely besides the point of how formidably they played Mycroft Holmes – twice!
Because Mycroft– That case which enabled the MI6 to be founded, that kidnapping of William, Mycroft must have seen through the scheme.
At least the aftermath, the bigger picture of Moriarty orchestrating that kidnapping must be obvious to Mycroft.
Of course, to him it is Albert who pulled the strings. Towards Mycroft, it is Albert who orchestrated that Albert’s troop would be in London, that his brother William would be kidnapped, and that William would be taken to the lair of the opium smugglers.
That plan – because Mycroft Holmes must have seen through it for what it was – proved to Mycroft what Moriarty is capable of.
It doesn’t matter that, towards Mycroft, Albert was the mastermind. What mattered is that Albert showed him “this is what I can do with my resources I have now” and essentially left Mycroft no other choice but to hand the MI6 to Albert Moriarty.
William’s whole kidnapping, the entire set-up of it, was to show that Albert Moriarty knows how to use resources he has. That he knows how to orchestrate things.
That James Moriarty is fully capable of seeing through things others wouldn’t dream of attempting.
Of course, that is probably also where they earned Mycroft’s distrust because in proving how powerful, how organised, how capable the Moriartys are, they made him cautious about them.
They have been playing psychological games with Mycroft Holmes from the beginning. From the moment Albert got wind of the MI6 possibly being formed.
And while Mycroft was left with doubts about Albert’s loyalty, there were no doubts whatsoever about his capability.
The further you get into the story, the more it all falls into place, really.

who is your favourite protagonist and your favourite antagonist? and on a similar note what duo had your favourite tension/interactions? from any media :)
I've done a lot of villainous or antagonist/protagonist book recs already, so focusing on other media (all with an antagonist edge)...
Louis and Lestat in the new Interview with the vampire series (though I obviously liked the book too!)
A lot of the dynamics in The Vampire Diaries series get my heart. Klaus, though!! And Katherine for that matter <3 Also Damon. And sometimes Stefan. And oh you get the point. Obsessed.
Hannibal and Will in NBC's Hannibal
Drea and Eleanor in Do Revenge
Moriarty and either Sherlock or Joan in Elementary
The Master/The Doctor in Doctor Who
Villanelle/Eve from Killing Eve (when the writing is good)
Spike and Buffy in Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Now that Caster has been shown, I can't see him as Seimei anymore. Granted his master is Seimei's descendant, but Caster himself seems to brooding to be Seimei, the guy constantly compared to Merlin. The weird tentacle things in his palms are interesting though
Seimei is compared to Merlin in the context that he's not a conventionally helpful person. His interactions in FGO do seem kinda playful, but Heian is a thing he's personally invested in, and his appearances in the last 2 Summer events were under disguises. The closest we have to a comment on what Seimei is like under normal circumstances is Kintoki having a talk with Holmes and feeling like he was talking to Seimei.
Caster here certainly looks dark, but he's supposed to. This man's been have been quite consistently established as rancid. His first mention was Tamamo describing him as a sexy monster with a soul the color of the land of the dead. Raikou outright refuses to comment on him. Kiichi pitied Murasaki when she learned she was his student. Seimei is the only person Nagiko doesn't use nicknames for.
And then there's the stream where this CE was revealed and Kawasumi slipped up that Moriarty kinda looks like Seimei in this design.

4 and 15 for vlad
4. I need this man in an Otome game now.
Fate: Honestly; I would love to see him in another grail war with a master that actually cared for him. That’s why I made one.
Non Fate: Design wise, I’d like to see him as a Final Fantasy boss. Give him a nice dungeon. Character wise, I’d like to see him in a contemporary setting. His personality alone would be just … really fun to play with. Maybe something set between 1980s - 2020s? (Yeah I know that’s a petty big range but whateverssss)
15. Obviously it’s Vlad/Switch/Moriarty
Shipping Vlad is hard. Half the time he doesn’t really….get a lot of interactions enough. If I really wanted to do an interesting dynamic….maybe enemies to lovers Vlad/Karna? The only thing that actually caused their conflict in Apoc iirc, was the religious differences. I think that would be interesting to explore - especially with Vlad’s own history with religious conflict.
Siegfried/Vlad is one you’ve personally implanted in my brain - they’re both kings yet simultaneously vassals in different aspects. If we add in Kriemhild too…hmm, I’ll need to give that more thought.
Another difficulty is Vlad happens to be one of the visibly aged characters — and so; since age gaps seem less popular than I think (I enjoy a nice age gap romance) he often gets left to play a paternal role…I should work to fix that.

Top 5 Portrayals of Irene Adler
The past three lists I discussed some of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson’s most notable allies: Mrs. Hudson, Inspector Lestrade, and Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft. However, no detective and his sidekick would be able to function without cases to solve…without villains to conquer. While Professor Moriarty is the most famous and recurring Holmes antagonist, Holmes solved many, MANY other cases, and faced many other rogues, aside from the Napoleon of Crime. I think it’s time to give some of the more noteworthy criminals Holmes went after their fair due. Just to warn you, these lists will be simple, quick Top 5s rather than Top 10s, and once again, the descriptions will be brief. This is typically for one of three reasons: a.) there just aren’t that many versions of the character out there to begin with, b.) all the versions after a certain point sort of gel together in terms of my personal preference, or c.) a bit of both. With that said, let’s start with arguably Holmes’ second greatest adversary: Irene Adler, the Mistress of Disguise. In the original story “A Scandal in Bohemia,” Adler is actually one of the few criminals to escape and thoroughly outwit Sherlock Holmes. Notably, she is the only woman to outsmart the Master Detective, which is one of the reasons Holmes refers to her as “The Woman”: a sign that she is, in his eyes, the finest of her gender. It’s heavily implied in the original stories that Holmes is in love with Irene, or, at the very least, she is the first lady he has come truly close to loving. He loves Irene not so much in a sensual or physical way, but more for her incredible wit, daring, and mystique. While Adler is an antagonist in the story, on that note, she’s not by any means the worst of Holmes’ opponents. In short, Adler is the original Femme Fatale: the alluring, morally ambiguous, dangerous female who both entrances and hinders her hero. The Catwoman to Sherlock Holmes’ Batman, if you will. Various adaptations and reimaginings since have toyed with this idea, and especially latched onto the romantic overtones, ever since. There are lots of versions of Irene Adler; she’s one of those characters who falls into Point B, as I mentioned earlier: after a certain point, a lot of them just sort of gel together for me. However, picking my Top 5 was fairly easy; it’s just harder to do any number beyond that. With that said, let’s waste no more time: The Woman is waiting. Here are My Top 5 Portrayals of Irene Adler!
Tumblr media
5. Anne Baxter, from Masks of Death.
In this made-for-TV movie, Peter Cushing and John Mills play an aging Holmes and Watson on their final case before retirement. Anne Baxter appears as an equally “advanced” Irene Adler, in a relatively small but important role in the story. It’s primarily the uniqueness of this Adler that gets her in my top five: Baxter was a great choice in casting, her interactions with Cushing as Holmes are fantastic, and the idea of these old adversaries re-encountering one another in their twilight years is an interesting one indeed.
Tumblr media
4. Gayle Hunnicutt, from the Granada Series.
It’s largely due to Hunnicutt’s “scene partner” as Holmes - the unmatchable Jeremy Brett - that nails her placement on the countdown. Granada’s adaptation of “A Scandal in Bohemia” was actually the very first episode of the Brett series, and it serves as an excellent first impression for the show as a whole, with Hunnicutt playing a very book-accurate take on the character. (Albeit with a different pronunciation of the name from the usual, with an accent at the end of “Irene,” so that it is pronounced “Ee-Rain-uh” instead of “Eye-Reen”...unusual.) While Hunnicutt’s calculating, cunning Adler is phenomenal, I personally feel other versions that go “beyond the books” make her even more interesting.
Tumblr media
3. Rachel McAdams, from the Guy Ritchie Films.
Conan Doyle fans seem polarized about McAdams’ take on Irene Adler. For me, I personally think she’s an excellent, albeit somewhat different, interpretation of the character. This version heavily ups the romantic side of her relationship with Holmes, and really plays up the moral ambiguity, as she helps Sherlock out almost as often as she gets him in trouble. Using the earlier analogy, she’s at her most “Catwoman-esque” here. It’s eventually revealed - SPOILER ALERT - that Irene is working for Moriarty, although it’s not altogether clear why. She is seemingly killed off early in the second movie, when Moriarty feels she has become a liability. Sad.
Tumblr media
2. The Version from Moriarty the Patriot.
This is a rather weird one, to be honest. It’s hard to talk about this version of the character without giving away some MAJOR spoilers for the series as a whole, but I will do my best. Irene first appears in an adaptation of “A Scandal in Bohemia,” entitled “A Scandal in the British Empire” (which borrows some minor influence from “The Bruce Partington Plans”). Weirdly enough, she’s actually EXTREMELY book-accurate here, and the way Holmes’ relationship with her is showcased is equally so: the two aren’t depicted as being romantically involved so much as being, I suppose, “flirtatious best friends.” This is fitting, since the strong romantic overtones in THIS series go between Holmes and Moriarty…but that’s another story. Speaking of, after this initial story arc, Irene’s character goes into some…UNEXPECTED territory, but it does nothing to make her character any less interesting.
Tumblr media
1. Lara Pulver, from Sherlock.
Once again, much like the Guy Ritchie version, Pulver’s incarnation heavily emphasizes the romantic tension between Adler and Holmes. Also like the Ritchie version, this take on Adler ends up embroiled with Moriarty, although things end rather differently in this interpretation. This Adler, I felt, hit a good balance between a proper villainess - and a very fine one, at that, able to prove a solid match for Holmes - and the more sympathetic love interest at the same time.

plots please for elysium, sherlock, and giselle mayhaps ...... i'll put thana in london to make them fit they'll see the horrors
Tumblr media
send "plots please" (+ muse/s) for plot suggestions for our muses! / @vtriol
Tumblr media
sorry this is so late if u saw my keyboard / laptop saga i've been suffering KJEMNRH ANYWAYS... trying to keep these very basic so they're flexible, if anything doesn't fit or u want to tweak xyz that's more than fine but here's some ideas 😳
Tumblr media
elysium ➛ the easiest to write with cuz he's just so... approachable rly lmao. 2 initial ideas that can be separate or combined or expanded on : ely runs the only bookshop in london that allows books imported from the surface w the permission of mr pages, which fits well with thana's character owning a bookshop in their canon. if we go the route of thana being a recent arrival in fallen london, seeking a job at once upon under elysium would be possible & easy enough [it also has a lodge above it, which would fit in well w FL's beginnings in canon where the MC has to shack up in some rando's attic lmao KJERMNH] since they wouldn't have any money yet, ely could just consider the job repayment for the lodgings until thana is more situated in the city. that's an idea to set up a meeting!
second that could be tacked on or if u wanted to make thana more familiar with london is the inquisition being present in the city and hunting non-human citizens. or sometimes just assassinated humans they find ungodly under the vatican 💀 anw my point is the local inquisition hunters [like sherlock, who is Famous TM in london] being hired to ~kill thana~ for xyz reason and ely stepping in to warn them and/or protect them. why? who knows, ely just kinda DOES SHIT and hopes he doesn't die in this city. he's technically sherlock's rival despite being retired too, so. easy enough to put a character in danger in london !
Tumblr media
sherlock ➛ meanwhile, speaking of this ahole KJERNHM there's the idea of bouncing off ^ that and having sherlock basically get hired to hunt down and kill thana. though they're a vampire hunter on the surface, it IS more apt to say anyone in london can pay sherlock to kill whoever and there's v few cases they won't take cuz they don't care about anyone except jack-of-smiles [initially.] who what why is smth to figure out but ofc, it being fallen london, anyone can want anyone dead for any number of reasons. :')
alternatively, could have thana seeking to hire sherlock instead, for matters related to the supernatural or not. OR tbqh thana could just get caught up in one of sherlock's stories lmfao. when jack-of-smiles isn't active, the sherlock crew [moriarty, watson, sherlock themself, and irene] tend to get caught up in city-wide capers so any number of ppl can get dragged into those adventures since that's where a lot of the books about them come from in the city kjerhmn
Tumblr media
giselle ➛ is an oddball who kinda doesn't belong in london, as in the city proper, since she's from sunken venice and is only in the city as a delegate from the fae to try to broker some agreement with the masters of the bazaar. that makes her a wild case though cuz if u wanted thana to be able to leave london, there could be some kind of test program b/t venice and the masters to allow a small handful of londoners to come live among the fae in venice and see if they're able to integrate properly. thana could just easily be randomly chosen for this. (whether they want to go or not. if the masters are at the helm, no one chosen has a choice, they're going to venice :^) klrjtmnhkrthmn). giselle would be in charge of getting them moved in, situated, and keeping an eye on them so that's easy enough to keep them interacting.
alternatively, if you wanted to ~stay in london~, giselle prob could have the most casual plot in just meeting her while she's trying to kill herself dealing w the worst people imagineable until she's allowed to leave london and go home EKJRHN [she hates the masters] [PLEASE let her leave]

the idea of louis carrying albert's shyer daughter around while doing stuff while she's just quiet is soooo cute also the thought of madeline being john's assisstant is sooooo stupidly adorable like i can't comprehend it. like these two would share the same braincell. plus i wanted to pitch an idea : 🩰 darling meeting john a couple of times when william and sherlock interact. i have this idea that john, to her, is one of those rare people who doesn't want anything from her. he is nice becuase he is. no ulterior motives. it is different from albert's darling since they have the same issues. but john is someone separate from her. he is nice for the sake of being. he is gentle and his eyes reflect no master plan. i can imagine him making small talk and she is silently blushing. better make sure william doesn't see the blush tho-
Ahhhh I know! Just imagining Louis caring her all the time because I honestly picture her probably having chronic fatigue (which fun fact I have and I write so much to help me with it) so I think he would have a very special bond with her since he was very sickly as a child and she is quite similar and just wants to be held all the time. Sorry about the tiny bit of angst lol.
But yes just picturing John and Madeline am trying to keep up with the detective and her elder sister would be like a mirror. Like Watson and her just watching the two of them trying to figure out what the fuck they are thinking.
But the idea of her and John being friends melts my heart. Like she has never had anyone truly kind in her life stick around and when they first meet probably on the train she probably doesn’t trust him at first and it wouldn’t be until their second meeting probably in Bath where the painting gets vandalized where she lets her guard around him. I’m just imagining the two of them looking at the paintings in the gallery and she knows how they are done from her time watching the crew making backdrops for the opera and John just listens, and it’s sweet and kind and reminds her of her dead friends. So just whenever Sherlock and William are talking or working together the two of them just go off with perhaps Sherlock’s darling if she is there and the three of them are actually very good friends.
Now I have the really sad visual of John and Sherlock’s darling reminding her of her two dead best friends when they are visiting, Sherlock and William talking on their own, and she just breaks down crying and the two quickly comfort her, wondering what’s wrong. Then William notices and walks over, pulling her away from John and asks her what’s wrong right when she was about to tell John and Sherlock’s darling what happened and why she was crying…
“I…I don’t remember… sorry.”

TEARING DOWN YOUR WALLS (MYCROFT HOLMES X OC!MORIARTY)
Alizon Moriarty, the elder sibling of the renowned consulting criminal, embodies a striking presence with matching hair colour and eyes reminiscent of their notorious counterpart. Yet, Alizon diverges distinctly, portraying a vibrant intellect intertwined with a refined sense of style. Despite their jovial demeanour, Alizon conceals a latent tendency toward psychopathy, a trait that surfaces only under specific triggers.
As the older sibling, Alizon occupies a position of authority within the government, surpassing even the esteemed Mycroft Holmes in rank. Identified as demi-gender, Alizon navigates their identity with grace and confidence, seamlessly balancing their professional obligations with personal complexities.
Mycroft Holmes, The epitome of governmental authority and intellectual prowess. With a demeanour that exudes cool, calculated control, Mycroft navigates the intricate web of political intrigue and criminal activity with unparalleled finesse. His towering intellect is matched only by his formidable presence, often depicted as a master manipulator behind the scenes.
Physically imposing yet possessing an understated elegance, Mycroft's sharp wit and encyclopaedic knowledge serve as formidable weapons in his arsenal. Clad in impeccably tailored suits that mirror his refined taste, he commands attention in any room he enters. Despite his enigmatic demeanour, Mycroft harbours a complex relationship with his younger brother, Sherlock Holmes, often oscillating between mentorship and exasperation in their interactions.
As these two formidable figures cross paths, the question arises: will the elder Moriarty and Holmes siblings become rivals akin to their notorious counterparts, or will they chart a course entirely different from their younger siblings' paths?

9,24,25 on precious old villain boi (Moriarty) 🦋
- 9. Could you be roommates with this character?
he is my husband. with the caveat of ‘you’ being ‘post-shinjuku master’ otherwise the answer is an automatic no as would most things involving him and positive interactions with other people.
in terms of any kind of co-existing with him and a post-shinjuku master, i feel like he’d alternate between enjoying just being in the same room while doing separate things, going out of his way to bother/involve you in things, and wanting to be alone for extended periods of time for various nefarious reasons scheming etc.
- 24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
of mine? huhh… i mean there are plenty of other characters that remind me of him at this point (harold, baristador, etc) but not really in ‘my’ immediate consumption. i guess mgs1-era revolver ocelot is the most immediate one lol. it’s the mustache and the guns.
- 25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
i saw him around when he was first added to JP, and my first impression was just that i thought he was kinda hot, but i didn’t have any strong feelings about him and he didn’t really click with me until december of that year when i randomly had a dream about him like some kind of prophetic curse at which point i rapidly succumbed to the madness.
anyway 6 years later he’s one of my favorite characters of all time at least in terms of how attached i got to him.

Happy 101st Anniversary to Fritz Lang's silent epic crime thriller masterpiece, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler!
Tumblr media
Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler was released on April 27, 1922 in two parts, The Great Gambler: A Picture of the Time and Inferno: A Game of People of Our Time. In its entirety, the film clocks in at four-and-a half hours. Based on the novel written by Norbert Jacques, it tells the story of the exploits of the criminal mastermind set against the tumultuous backdrop of Weimar-era Germany - in a zeitgeist of high-crime, decadence, and degeneracy.
Of the German title, Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler - "spieler" carries several meanings for the character of Mabuse - a gambler...actor...player. He's a man who gambles with money and people, effortlessly maneuvering between the classes while in disguise and embodies whatever role he's in, and plays with the lives and fates of others.
Mabuse shares attributes with his forebearers Professor Moriarty, Svengali, Fantômas, and Dr. Caligari and he epitomizes the aspects of a Nietzchean Übermensch.
Rudolf Klein-Rogge (Rotwang of Metropolis & King Etzel of Die Nibelungen) stars as the titular villain - a diabolical crime lord who is a master of disguise, nefarious gambler, reputed psychoanalyst, and a ruthless manipulator of people. He also has the powers of mind control and hypnosis at his disposal. Dr. Mabuse commits a myriad of crimes ranging from theft, counterfeiting, predatory gambling, extortion, blackmail, kidnapping, murder, and others. Mabuse runs his criminal empire like a well-oiled machine. He is abetted by a network of underlings, agents, and accomplices. Anyone could be in league with Mabuse to undermine law enforcement. Mabuse is a harsh boss to work for - punctuality is paramount and expects his orders to be carried out with no room for error. When one works for Mabuse, it's for life - any betrayal and/or desertion carries a death sentence.
He is also quite charismatic, and his seductive prowess affects anyone who comes in contact with him.
Dr. Mabuse's arch-nemesis is State Prosecutor Norbert von Wenk, a dedicated public servant of the state determined to bring him to justice and doggedly pursues the man whom he has labeled, "the Great Unknown". Wenk is brought in to investigate the numerous cases of predatory gambling on the rise. He makes contact with one of Mabuse's victims - millionaire playboy Edgar Hull and to put him under police protection. His investigation takes him from one gambling den to another. As Wenk becomes more of a threat, Mabuse gets even more relentless in his quest to eliminate his most hated enemy.
The gorgeous and alluring women connected to Mabuse are popular nightclub dancer, Cara Carozza and the jaded and mysterious Countess Dusy Told. Carozza is also a intensely dedicated agent of his and deeply loves him. She was his mistress and had lived in a private room in his house. Once she developed actual feelings for him, Mabuse started acting callous towards her, and is treated as nothing more than a tool to him. He even has her honeypot Hull. When Mabuse meets Countess Told at a sĂŠance, he is immediately captivated by her beauty. In their first interaction, he feels a kinship between them. Wanting further contact, Mabuse hypnotizes the countess into inviting him to a soirĂŠe that she and her husband will be hosting. His desires for the countess quickly escalate into lust and obsession. He plots to take her for himself and to ruin her husband, Count Told.
Another man also carries a torch for Countess Told and it is Wenk.
The film also stars Aud Egede-Nissen as Cara Carozza, Gertrude Welcker as Countess Dusy Told, Alfred Abel as Count Told, Bernhard Goetzke as State Prosecutor Norbert von Wenk, and Paul Richter as Edgar Hull.
Those portraying Mabuse's underlings are: Robert Forster-Larrinaga as Spoerri, Hans Adalbert Schlettow as Georg, Georg John as Pesch, Charles Puffy as Hawasch, and Grete Berger as Fine
Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler is highly recommended for any silent film fan to watch, it's truly engaging from start to finish.

"When the sun shine we'll shine together."
Hello ! My name is Finn and I'm your local omnificto hyperpop addict. This is my self-ship blog where I post and reblog things about my F/Os. I am totally comfortable with sharing and actually would be happy to see that more people are in these fandoms !
My three current main f/os are Reaver (Fable II & III), Astor (Hyrule Warriors : Age of Calamity) and Thranduil (The Hobbit/LotR).
Do not interact if : you're against self-shippers (that's kinda obvious, I know), if you're a bigot of any kind, if you're here to bring discourse, racist, lgbt-phobe, islamophobe, antisemistic, sexist etc.
Below the cut is my ancient tag system.
Here's a list of my main romantic F/Os and the emoji for posts related to them :
EDIT : I don't use these tags anymore, I just put them here to remember.
👁️ Astor - Hyrule Warriors : Age of Calamity
🖋️ Reaver - Fable 2&3
🌆 Reiji Amamiya - Tokyo Aliens
💜 Pythor - Ninjago : Masters of Spinjitsu
🔪 Kakashi Hatake - Naruto
🕸️ Tsuchigomori - Toilet Bound Hanako-kun
🥀 William James Moriarty - Moriarty the Patriot
💌 Sherlock Holmes - Moriarty the Patriot
📞 Von Herder - Moriarty the Patriot
Anyway, it's nice to meet you and I hope you'll enjoy my cringey-ass content !
PS : -🕊️ is the tag for non-F/Os related posts I make. Also please don't mind if the emojis have nothing do do with the characters, they are just based on AU or weird associations

This isn't in the tags but I wanna talk about it! If anyone has ever wondered what my icon picture is from, the first silent film I ever watched wasn't Metropolis (1927), though that one came shortly afterwards and it was also fantastic. It was the FantĂ´mas silent film serials by Louis Feuillade from 1913/1914.
Tumblr media
I found them on DVD in my college library. I wasn't studying anything remotely related to film or movie history, but I'd go over to browse on occasion and see what they had, and for some reason these caught my eye. I was curious. Is it bad form to borrow materials from the college library that aren't remotely related to your course and might be needed by someone whose course they are related to? Possibly. But I succumbed to curiosity and borrowed the DVD anyway.
The FantĂ´mas books (by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre) and serials are early pulp french crime thrillers, focused around an absolutely monstrous moriarty-esque master criminal slash anarchist slash all-around bad dude, the titular FantĂ´mas, and Juve, the inspector who repeatedly tries to stop him. The serials were my first introduction to him, and to silent film in general, just by happy chance of that afternoon in the library.
In particular, I really like the second serial, Juve Contre FantĂ´mas (1913), because it really plays up the cat-and-mouse interactions between the two characters. And also I just really like watching the actor playing Juve, Edmond Breon. I'm not even sure why, he's just really expressive, and this serial in particular gives him a lot to work with. I bought the DVDs myself later, and still have them, but by happy chance you can actually watch (at least currently) this particular serial on youtube as well:
youtube
If, like me, you ever have a fit of curiosity and want to give it a go. Heh. I don't know, I just quite enjoy them.
Watching Metropolis and other silent films later, it's interesting to see different styles. The FantĂ´mas serials, for example, are quite heavy on title screens and text interjections to explain the plot, because they are centered around a criminal mastermind, and people need to keep up with what's happening, while something like Metropolis leans much heavier on imagery to carry its message and less on textual interjection. Which has knock-on effects, I think, in that something like Metropolis is significantly easier to translate, since the body language and imagery and acting is carrying more of the message, while FantĂ´mas is much more reliant on written language.
Anyway. Diversion complete. If anyone ever wants to watch early french pulp crime silent movies, for reasons, may I recommend?
Feel free to leave the film title and year in the tags! :)
