I once posted an incorrect quote of drunk teenage Ellie (like 15–16) drawing on Joel's forehead with a highlighter, and when he asked what she was doing, she said, "Highlighting you." and he chuckled, "Why?" and she looked at him with those beamy, watery eyes and silly smile, "Because you're important."

I think that sums it all up. I've always seen Ellie as this goofy, bubbly kid when drunk. Wanting to hug everyone around her just because she feels happy and she needs to infect (oops, pun intended) everyone around her. I think she's silly and even funnier than usual. Her tongue's not listening to her, and she mostly just ends up sluring most of the words and then giggling about it.

Adult Ellie is probably not THAT silly (because adult Ellie knows things that younger Ellie didn't know yet), but she surely still has that goof in her, especially if she's around people who make her feel good. Like Dina, Jesse, or even Eugene. Other kids most likely love drunk Ellie; she trying to play hide and seek with them and then getting caught in something else, forgetting she's supposed to find them. Like, in the middle of a meaningful conversation with Dina, "Oh, shit!"... "What?"... "I forgot I was supposed to find them."... "Who?"... Tomás Bogardus and Alex Byrne published their angsty tantrum about my recent MIND article in the pro-eugenics Journal of Controversial Ideas. Their footnote includes a complaint about their paper being rejected from MIND for being shit. The quoted claim sounds accurate...

The article is 50% strawman, 50% flippant, unsupported claims. I am rather puzzled how either of them managed to get advanced degrees in philosophy let alone jobs, if that’s what they consider serious academic work. I guess their standards went down the drain over time?

So much of the paper seems to boil down to something like “if we assume that gender bioessentialism is correct and that gender identity ought to track it, then Ashley’s account is incorrect.” No shit.

Fascinatingly, if you’re willing to make up a theory and attribute it to your rhetorical opponent, it’s pretty easy to disprove. Of course, they don’t even manage to do that.

Their claim that it’s psychologically implausible is more or less based on the fact that I try to account for everyone’s gender identity rather than just reducing gender identity to “I accurately recognized my biological sex” (their preferred approach).

I do think one of the most interesting aspects of Guardians Vol. 3, and I’m not surprised this take hasn’t had quite as much traction since it’s not as viscerally emotionally interesting as exploring Rocket’s trauma, but one thing that really stuck out to me was the way that the High Evolutionary, from top to bottom, was a complete refutation of eugenics and those practices. This is evident even from the trailers, with a line that got heavy focus in promotion despite showing up surprisingly late in the film itself, “He didn’t want to make things better. He just hated things the way they were.” Marvel has kinda been on a tear with ‘villains who have a point’, which I haven’t hated as much as others, as the story can go somewhere interesting by having the hero adopt the worldview of the villain, but it’s also cool to see a villain who is just fundamentally, objectively incorrect in every way and needs to be stopped because their harmful ideology is only causing pain and suffering.

Obviously, there’s the emotional cost. Guardians 3 doesn’t hesitate to show how the High Evolutionary’s methods are repugnant and despicable, what happens to sentient beings when their life is compared to some arbitrary and unfounded aesthetic, physical, or mental standard. That aspect is important to show if you want to cover this topic.

But I think the other half is equally as important. I have had real encounters with people who will try to say that eugenics as a practice isn’t fundamentally flawed, it just needs to be executed ethically. And the next step of this exploration is to look at the raw results and say, no, this isn’t better. We see that within Counter-Earth, a planet supposedly populated with the perfect civilization led by the perfect authority, and it’s the exact goddamn same, with all the same ills and sins as our society, it is no better. To quote a documentary on a separate topic, but which also covered people who thought they knew the one easy fix to make society better, “because those problems are patterns of human behavior. They’re incentives, they’re social structures, they’re modalities. The problem is what people are doing to others,” not that there’s some secret defect in some people’s DNA that’s somehow screwing over the rest of us.

Everything about the High Evolutionary’s worldview is fundamentally flawed, that is what makes him a terrifying opposing force to face, and we see this from the very beginning when someone that was supposed to be a lesser life-form, a stepping stone to creating the actual perfect people, outsmarted him, figured out something he couldn’t see. Then that same individual became one of the most celebrated people in the galaxy, Rocket both achieved greatness and also found a group of people who unwaveringly love him, while the man who created him, who saw himself as the one to guide life to that perfect society, died loathed and betrayed by all those closest to him, because he was wrong and could only hurt people and was going to get everyone killed pursuing his wrong ill-conceived goal.

Sappiness Overload ALERT!

I know not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, even within the U.S., and I'll be honest, it's a useless holiday, but I don't want to get rid of it because having the days off from work (or school) is always nice.

BUT for the sake of giving thanks. I'm thankful for all you wonderful tumblr people. Obviously, there are the bots and bad apples and we know who they are and where they can go, but for everyone else, you're awesome!

I love the memes, the deep commentaries and analyses of the things in your favorite fandoms, the fanfics, the artwork, the incorrect quotes, the comradery in our shared fandoms, and everything in between.

I love the feral-ness some of you have over something I know nothing about or maybe I know it, but it didn't hit the same for me. Maybe it's a piece of media I consumed and enjoyed, but for you it was everything. I love that, even if it makes me feel like some nerdy, midwestern dad/Eugene Levy type who doesn't quite get it, but I'm excited that you're excited. Also, I probably do get it to some degree, but since I'm a cishet dude some things may not hit the same for me as it did for you... and vice versa. Either way, it doesn't matter. One of my favorite things about fandoms, is how people use their own areas of interest and knowledge to analyze and expound on media. Especially with children's or family media.

Like when people break down themes in Tangled and talk about the gaslighting or the way Mother Gothel tilts Rapunzel's head down to kiss her hair and pulled her hair out from behind her ear, whereas Flynn/Eugene tucks in behind her ear and tilts her head up to kiss her. Or point out details in The Hunger Games, like the bottles of whatever in Catching Fire that people in the Capitol drink so they vomit and can eat more and how that relates to the real world and how the wealthy 1% treats the needs of the lower class. Or the stereotypes and misrepresentations in Harry Potter.

And a different side of this same idea that I love, is how fandoms also grow the media. Not in fanart or fics or whatever (although i am a huge fan of that,) I'm thinking more about how people interact with characters. Adding to how characters think or feel or interact with each other. Like incorrect quotes, but also breaking down relationships and discussing how two characters depend on each other, things like that.
