I'm reading about how Israel, in the immediate aftermath of the 1948 Nakba, deliberately replaced olive trees and other indigenous flora with European plants. This ecological disaster, which is now proudly hailed under the banner of 'making the desert bloom,' was done to 'de-Arabize' the landscape, and to cover up - often with fast-growing European pine trees -the ruins of Palestinian villages that were destroyed by Zionists forces.

I was thinking about how we’re all treating 2025 like it’s a magic spell, like flipping the calendar will fix everything. It reminded me of an old story about a farmer on the border between Russia and Poland. For years he didn’t know which country his land belonged to and when he finally found out it was Poland he celebrated no more brutal Russian winters. But the winters didn’t care about borders. The snow kept coming same as always and it’s the same with a new year. My family in Gaza doesn’t get a break just because the calendar changes. The hardships continue and so does the unbearable weight of not knowing. Two of my cousins were taken by the IDF a week ago, and we still don’t know where they are. Not knowing is unbearable. But even in the toughest winters people like you bring light. Every donation, every share of our story, every kind word has made the impossible feel possible. Because of you we’ve survived. Unhappy New Year 😭

As everyone celebrates New Year’s Eve 🎉 and prepares to welcome a new year filled with hope and joy, I find myself alone in the darkness of pain and suffering 😢. The shelling by the occupation's aircraft has destroyed my home 🏚️ and deeply wounded me, as shrapnel from the explosion has entered my body.

I underwent surgery 🏥, but unfortunately, it was unsuccessful due to the **collapse of the healthcare system** in Gaza. The doctors told me that the only solution is to travel to a country with an advanced healthcare system 🌍 to remove the shrapnel, but the road to recovery is not easy.

I have created a fundraising campaign 💖, but so far I have only been able to raise **1,000/10,000 Euros** needed. This amount is not enough to cover the treatment costs.

**Tonight, I wish that all friends would donate whatever they can, so I can expedite my treatment process.** While everyone celebrates the beginning of a new year 🥳, I am living with unbearable pain all the time. Happy new year, friends! -Or it should be, but currently we are about to enter the second year Palestine has been occupied and torn apart by the Israel army.

Ahmed is the father of two children, a 3 year old and a 1 year old, the former having been born just days after Israel began the war.

Currently Ahmed and his family are living in a torn tent, facing freezing cold weather and rain, while trying to keep their children warm. Their goal right now is to rebuild their house which was destroyed at the beginning of the war, which will cost about $40k to cover all the expenses.

i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭
