To Be Hero X: Supporting Characters’ Names in Chinese and English + Chinese Name Meanings

As mentioned in the Top 10 Heroes version of this post, here’s a names meaning post for the supporting characters.

Characters are sorted by order of appearance, and names are listed in this order: English, Chinese, Pinyin, and Nickname/CN Abbreviation.

(The last two are just for my own reference. And ignore the colors in the text. That’s also just for my ref)

Post will be updated as new supporting characters are introduced.

Lin Ling’s Arc

1. Miss J / 娟姐 / Juān Jiě / JJ

I really didn’t want to abbreviate her as JJ because of Yuri on Ice, but since Ice Ado movie is cancelled then whatever

Juān 娟 means beautiful/graceful, while jiě 姐 is a honorific that means “elder sister.” But jie can also be used to address older women in the same generation or in a generation close to you, so the translation of “miss” in English is apt.

2. Moon / 潇月卿 / Xiāo Yuè Qīng / Yue-jiejie / YJJ

As compensation for me fangirling over her murderer, I will call her my jiejie 🙏

Dictionary definitions of each character in her name:

潇 (xiāo) = (of water) deep and clear; (of wind and rain) howling and pounding; (of light rain) pattering

月 (yuè) = moon

卿 (qīng) = high ranking official (old); term of endearment between spouses (old); (from the Tang Dynasty onwards) term used by the emperor for his subjects (old);

The association of xiao with water, the word for moon, plus qing being both a term of endearment between old couples and one used to address someone of high status. Something something about Xiao Yueqing being put on a pedestal and also the fact that she is now Lin Ling’s white moonlight:

The Chinese slang white moonlight (白月光 , bái yuèguāng) typically refers to someone or something that remains unattainable yet deeply cherished in one’s heart. It represents a love that lingers—idealized, untouchable, and forever out of reach. While often translated as a “first love,” it specifically describes a love that was never fully realized or reciprocated.

3. The Enlighter / 启士 / Qǐ Shì / QS

Qǐ 启 means “to enlighten/awaken,” and Shì 士 is a suffix used to denote someone as an expert in something. Thus, Enlightener Enlighter.

The correct word is Enlightener, not Enlighter 💀. Li Haoling, I beg you, stay in your lane and leave the localization to the experts 😭

3.2 God Eye / 天眼 / Tiān Yǎn / GE

Tiān 天 translates to “heaven” or “sky,” but depending on context it can also stand for “god.” Yǎn 眼 means “eye.”

Imma call him by his English name since the translation is good enough. GE is also a much better abbreviation than TY, which can stand for “thank you.”

4. Wreck / 破坏王 / Pòhuài Wáng / W + 雷克 / Léi Kè

His Chinese name means “Destruction King,” and in Chinese it sounds like what one would call a very troublesome child. The Chinese fans hate it and refuse to call him by it 😂. In the Chinese fandom, some just call him Wreck (written in English) or by its transliteration 雷克 (Léi Kè), which can mean “Thunder Conqueror.” And honestly, that sounds a whole lot cooler than Destruction King 😭. 雷 is also internet slang for “terrifying,” apparently… Yeah, that really is cooler 😭😭😭

5. Firm Man / 英雄不倒 / Yīngxióng Bù Dǎo / BD

I initially thought Yīngxióng 英雄 was just a title they add on to a hero’s name since it just means Hero, and in-universe there’s an ad that addresses Nice as Yingxiong Nice. But in the case of Bu Dao, I guess it really is part of his hero name since nobody calls him by just Bu Dao.

Bù 不 is a negator, and Dǎo 倒 is “to fall.” Direct translation of his name would then be something like Never Falling Hero, Infallible Hero, etc.

6. Wolf Girl / 蛊狼 / Gǔ Láng / GL

Gǔ 蛊 refers to a type of poison that is used to bewitch someone and can be controlled from afar. This choice of character is then very fitting for Gu Lang, since her powers work by changing the public’s perception of Bu Dao without directly confronting him.

Láng 狼 means wolf. Altogether, her name can be translated as Poison Wolf. Some have translated it to Mad Wolf, since Gu can also mean “to drive someone to insanity.” Personally, I prefer Bewitching Wolf or just Wolf Witch.

See now how “Wolf Girl” is an injustice to her actual hero name?

7. Mr. Shand / 尚总 / Shàng Zǒng / SZ

Shàng 尚 is just a common Chinese surname, but here are some of its dictionary definitions: still / yet / to value / to esteem.

Zǒng 总 is a honorific for your superior in work. I’ve often seen it translated as “chief.” So, Chief Zong

Idk why the team decided to change the g in Shang to d. Shang sounds much better than Shand, and English viewers shouldn’t find it so hard to accept since there was a guy named Shang in Mulan...

8. Blankster / 忘仔 / Wàng Zǎi / WZ

Wàng 忘 means “to forget,” while Zǎi 仔 means “child.” I guess the zai is there because WZ has been a hero since he was young.

A small thing but I really like how you do acknowledge that Jayce is ALSO smart. The fandom has a bit of a problem of purely making Jayce out to be a musclebound himbo and often ignore the fact that all the Hextech research was originally done by Jayce + how he not only made an entire leg brace from his old hammer, but also had an insane amount of equation work for the anomaly while Ekko and Heimerdinger had needed Powder to help.

Idk, it's just refreshing that even with Jayce being 7 and obvs is still a child, you took the time to note that he's also just as bright as Viktor, enough to get into older classes.

I’m so happy that came through clearly in the chapter! I think fandom in general defaults to archetypes (which is totally understandable since many source materials ALSO rely heavily on archetypes; I’m not criticising per se). These archetypes do reflect RL tho inc gendered or classist norms.

So I think fanon Jayce often gets pigeonholed into some of these 2D templates, intentionally or not. I enjoy opposites attract trope as much as the next blorbo (it’s SO CUTE) but as POC I think I’m a bit sensitive to the classist stuff — eg the idea that labourers aren’t “smart”, blue vs white collar, etc. If we want to get really meta, I think the hold such archetypes have in fandom speaks more to how source material (and the privileged positions of those who create much of such source material) perpetuate classist archetypes.

You’re so right that Jayce is, from the objective metrics given to us, extremely clever in his field. I think he can be a social himbo and also be a bloody engineering genius. LET BLORBOS BE NUANCED 🤣. We all have blind spots. Perfect characters are boring to me.

I find it fascinating how often fandom discourse criticise depictions in isolation from the system in RL that generated the source material in the first place. Of course we are all subject to criticism, but I find often we spend way more time debating sexism / racism in fic for example than the fact that source material will give us limited POC and then depict those POC as warmongering “brutes”. Like. Is it racist or sexist that I don’t like a fascist character? Or is it racist to depict fascists AND venture capitalists as the few WOC w lines lol. Sorry I digressed a bit at the end here. Hi there! I started reading your fic like right before Christmas. I made it to THE Simon chapter before I had to put it down cause 15k words at 2 am wasn't a great idea. The other funny part is I was barely in the COD fandom when I found your story and now I'm locked in.

"ie the thing that would have stripped dan heng of his powers had it been done correctly" do you have a quote on that? as far as I'm aware, we're still by and at large ignorant on what the exuvation charm entails, exactly - and even less about whether the reincarnation of a high elder would keep the power of their previous life should they be unable to complete the succession ritual before the end of their life. All we do know is that the exuviation charm was excruciatingly painful, so it might just have been outright torture to force Dan Feng into an egg, as injury can trigger hatching rebirth prematurely.

Besides his memories being canonically unnatural, I feel the main point of divergence between Dan Heng and every High Elder ever is that Dan Feng's memories do not come only in dreams - the clearest example of this is the sequence about drinking together in Ichor of the Two Dragons, but Dan Heng remembered how to open the sea, how to reseal it, etc, while he was awake. besides, the only memories he seems to get are of Dan Feng, not any other high elders, which I'd think is unusual too.

Personally, I think it's reasonable that speculation runs so rampant in the fandom - the lore is...very confusing lol. and sometimes outright contradictory ("the xianzhou doesn't engage in torture" vs what they did to dan feng and hoolay, the flawed exuviation charm vs what was caused by lingsha's master, some logical assumptions being regardless disproved with new info, etc.). since I keep seeing people getting it wrong: No, Dan Feng's rebirth was not tampered with. The thing that was supposed to tamper with his rebirth was tampered with. He had a normal rebirth. The reason Dan Heng remembered virtually nothing is probably because hating Dan Feng and pushing away those memories was pretty much his only coping mechanism.

"You can't ship MelVik because Mel was mean/looked down on/was classicist towards Viktor, and it's obvious Viktor doesn't get along with her because of how he looks at her!" But you ship JayVik, which equally has its moments of Jayce looking down on Viktor and carrying his own form of classicism, has his being mean or just inconsiderate here and there (and Viktor to him in vice versa), and even Viktor himself has been shown to argue or not always be on the same page as Jayce, but you have no problem shipping them together. This isn't about trying to influence people to ship MelVik, because whether you do or don't, the argument usually against it (or from what I've seen) from these certain types of fans is so surface level and often always paints Mel in this weird light like she's the sole perpetrator of everything bad in Viktor's life and/or acts like two characters suddenly disagreeing with one another is grounds for a ship being incompatible, even though worse things can happen between a pairing and they still will be enjoyed. And this argument is usually, even outside of Viktor, aimed towards ships involving Mel (eg. MelJay or Melvika) and it's not hard to know why, especially with how rampant misogynoir is in this fandom. Again, not saying you have to ship MelVik, but if your reason behind that is the excuse I listed above and you're aligned with the rest of this post....I need you to analyze that.

Whenever I write characters in general I try my best not to mischaracterize them too much. Their canon personalities/aspects is what made me love them in the first place and I don't want to stray too far from that..

I also get anxious when I don't interpret a character well enough not because I'm scared what others might say but literally because it's for my own sake.

I don't rlly mind nor care too much if people mischaracterize whether on purpose or on accident– people should just have fun aslong as no harm's done.
