I rewired my brain so that the "ohh idk .. am I really allowed to do that..." thought process is tied directly to "WHO'S GONNA STOP ME" but the thing is that I forgot that I am the oppositional defiant disorder poster child, and in casting my own insecurity as an authority to defy, I may have accidentally rendered myself too powerful

loserboy!thomas anderson this, loserboy!thomas anderson that. we need to talk more about loserboy!neo. he doesn’t suddenly stop being awkward and autistic after he escapes the matrix, guys. loserboy!neo having to keep tabs on you from afar because after he takes the redpill your code is rewritten to forget he ever existed and he’s too nervous to approach you again, this time as a complete stranger. loserboy!neo who stands alongside trin completely stoic and badass-looking in his tight leathers and shit but the tips of his ears flush red every time he’s even slightly out of his comfort zone.

Only time yall will ever see me post about AI on this blog:
I'm glad that most people aren't treating Character.ai the same as something like Stable Diffusion. Online writers are way less protective of their work than digital artists. Maybe in individual cases there are exceptions, but by and large it is not the same at all.
With that said though, it always struck me as weird that fanfiction writers legally can not make money off their work, yet it *is* legal to use fics to train chat bots and then charge a fee to use those bots. Just incredibly weird.

You know, in some ways, I actually do think that the so-called "AI" algorithms are a great example of commodity fetishism. The way people speak about AI suggests that it has a genuine mind of its own and moves independent from humans which couldn't be further from the truth. All the folks expressing concern over AI "stealing" jobs and "replacing" humans to our ultimate detriment seem to think that this is a process driven by the algorithms themselves, and that human beings are powerless to stop it. But that isn't the case. Humans have developed these algorithms, humans decide how to use them, and humans ultimately decide whether these algorithms leave us without a means to sustain ourselves. To be very clear, it is human beings and their human labor that is creating and maintaining these algorithms. It is human employers who will decide whether to fore people and replace them with data aggregating algorithms. Human beings will also be the ones to decide how we respond to that. Whether we will allow people to be replaced by algorithms without adequate compensation to allow them to maintain a livelihood will be up to us.
"AI" programs and our reactions to them are not driven by the programs themselves. These are computing programs that people have designed to be used on computer systems that people have built. We could collectively "pull the plug" tomorrow and the programs couldn't say boo about it because they do not have sentience or agency. Idk, it's just wild to me to see tech industry folks talking about these computer programs like they're living, independent beings. Like, I knew these guys were all massive idiots, but I at least thought they understood that computer programs weren't actually alive. Like, what are we doing here.

its really frustrating approaching conversations about AI because so many people don't understand how it works and seem resistant against learning more about it. it feels like trying to correct preconceptions makes people assume you're some dumb techbro

[[Screenshot ID: A twitter thread by sjklapecwriting that says:
The fact that "AI = what makes NPCs in video games do things" and "AI = complex scientific models that have been in use for years" and "AI = non-generative tools that automate tedious processes" and "AI = generative tools" are all called AI feels like deliberate obfuscation.
I want good AI in video games but I also don't want AI in video games at all and I think AI is useful in the sciences but don't trust AI at all to be used in science or medicine or law and AI to colour-correct a video or remove greenscreen is cool but AI generating movies sucks.
We talk about things that threaten art and creativity and steal vast quantities of work from artists and burn the amazon and drain the seas to do it all with the same language as something that can track a part of a video so special effects are easier to make and that sucks.
And this obfuscation feels so deliberate to me, because now people freak out if someone talks about wanting to use "AI that learns from the player" or "an AI solution to help me edit video" or "an AI that can be used to generate theoretical materials to test" and they look silly.
Because now "AI" is so firmly wrapped up with the concept of "generative models" that people are, rightfully, on guard against any mention of AI whatsoever to the point where entirely distinct technologies get uselessly criticized under the same umbrella.
Like imagine if we had no other language but "tank" to describe motor vehicles, so if I said we needed "public transit vehicles" everyone thought I wanted M1A1 Abrams for civilian transit. That's what it's like talking about AI.

#I really like the closing analogy and the points being made here and I'd take the criticism of the lack of specificity even farther#Like the generative nature is not the problem you can throw a bunch of texts into a small model you can train on your local computer and#make weird robot poetry that you execute your human curation skills on in order to find stuff worth sharing#that can be a worthwhile artistic endeavor that's generative use of computational models and even doing the same sort of#mathematical recombining#but you can do it in a way that's intentional and transformative and doesn't burn through any more power than routine computer tasks#in the year of our lord 2024#if you use a small enough set of texts and you're familiar with them you can spot plagiarism pretty easily#this was like a really common toy exercise for artsy or lit-loving folks in CS for years to dick around with the works of an author or two#anyways as someone who's had their finger on this pulse since before the chatgpt explosion#I still think that the problem has to do with the ease of interacting with an overpowered imperfect world-burning computer program#that will produce good-SEEMING results with absolutely no training from the operator#and i wish we had a name for the bad ones that focused on that#generative AI is too kind of a name for things like chatgpt#it lumps things that are actually useful (and old) in with things that are problematic#it's not calling out the problem and that's why the proponents of chatgpt are still okay with it#They're live tanks that look like fisher price cars#they're unregulated cartoon vapes#they're a brain surgery for dummies book#they're an unmarked button in your car that fires a cannon out of the top#fwiw I think the obfuscation is also coming more from a place of the AI bros wanting to steal legitimacy from scientific fields#wanting to make their current giant black box toy language models look older and more researched than they are#which I suppose is more or less what OP is saying#but phrased in a way that makes AI bros sound less like chessmasters#which i think is a useful exercise#long post

Mattresses, unbeknownst to many, are a lot like cars. Every year new ones roll out, they’re always tweaking and innovating and you’ll never find the same one you loved decades ago when buying a new one.
Where I sold mattresses had a three month return or exchange program for this reason. New beds take a while to break in, and they’re a big expense. Your body is used to the old one. So we made sure people were loving it. If a bed got returned we’d take it back, sanitize and clean it, then sell it again on clearance.
To sell these we always had to disclose what clearance meant to customers, and they had to sign that they knew what they were getting. (FYI, not every company is as… forthright about the used bed situation)
In clearance we had beds that were floor models, we had returns, and more rarely we had old models whose line had been discontinued. These clearance beds were always final sale, so a bed could only be sold twice.
Now, the manager at the store I was working at had realized a vital fact. Clearance beds in the warehouse didn’t sell, especially old models that salespeople weren’t familiar with. And even more especially in odd sizes, like twin extra longs. So he set up a split king on the showroom floor to exhibit clearance beds, pulling all those forgotten twin extra longs out onto the showroom.
Almost all of these were brand new discontinued models. Beds I’d never learned in training were exhumed to be displayed. The manufacturers had moved on to new lines and they’d been left behind. Why would he take such in interest in selling old stock, you might wonder? Because we made double commission on the sales margin of clearance beds, and if we’d had a bed long enough they dropped the cost in the system so it was a fucking cash cow to sell these. Even with huge discounts the commissions were wonderful so it was a win win.
When I got started I was jazzed about this program, I was so on board to sell weird old brand new beds and make a ton of money. I had a wonderful older couple come in, looking for a split king adjustable set. This was a white whale sale.
The current clearance models on the floor were a latex mattress that was brand new despite being of an age to start first grade, and a tempurpedic floor model. The couple laid down and it was like magic. They each loved the bed they’d laid down on. They wanted to buy the whole shebang.
I. Was. Thrilled. I told them about the clearance program and what that meant, and they weren’t bothered in the least. I wrote up the sale then dashed into the back, fizzing with excitement to tell my manager what I’d done.
“You sold the death bed?!” He asked in delight.
I pulled up short, my smile freezing in place. “What…?”
“Didn’t you check the notes?”
I hesitated for a long beat then slowly shook my head. You see, dear reader, all beds had a personal history. Every clearance bed had logs written up by the person who took the return, as well as warehouse crew after sanitizing. It helped us know what to expect when selling them. “Wasn’t it just a floor model? You said it was a floor model…”
He slowly shook his head. I checked the notes.
It turned out, it had been sold as a floor model. The first time. But the company had made an exception and taken it back as a return two months later. Why? Because it’s owner had passed away.
I stared at the computer in horror and my manager shrugged. “They signed the clearance form. Technically it was a floor model.”
“We know for a fact that a man died in that bed!”
“What they don’t know can’t haunt them,” he said philosophically.
The man came back a week later for more sheets, utterly delighted to tell me how well they were sleeping. I clamped my teeth down around the secret of the deathbed, choosing to let them love their new bed without the stigma. Only one person would be haunted by that deathbed, and it was me.
