one of the things about carmy that's so interesting is his ability to be open without being vulnerable. and he does this just by being very matter-of-fact and flippant about horrible things that happen/have happened to him, while refusing to show any emotion over them. i feel like we see this when he's talking about his mother, when he's pitching the cannoli dish ("so i had this huge panic attack last night and it gave me an idea"), when he's describing chef david ("he made me, probably, very mentally ill"). and I think this very much ties into how he deals with his stronger emotions - the ones that can't be shoved down - which is to present it as anger and use it to hurt people. he needs to have ways of letting shit out, but his only 2 strategies are 1) deflect, gloss over, get them to think you're letting them in so that you don't actually have to, and 2) push people away, get them to do what you want, but let them resent you for it. both have an underlying need for control, which makes sense, given everything about him
