i remember being in high school in 2011 when the gay teen suicides were national headlines, and everyone had Opinions on it, and the "it gets better" trend was everywhere, and -- while those videos did do a lot of good!! -- they just kind of made me more furious?? because i was so mad at all these adults basically saying, "yeah, high school is an institutional pit of death and horror, but eventually you'll be 18!!" i was like hey. Help Us Now.

it was actually the song "make it stop" by rise against that gave me any peace or sense of belonging, because. here was a band i loved full of straight dudes (as far as i know, anyway) who were just fucking MAD. they were righteously angry!! they gave a fuck what was happening!! and lyrics like "the gatherings hold candles but not their tongues" rang SO true to me, as someone who was dealing with endless "oh, so sad he died, but there was something wrong with his brain" discourse.

the memory of that has made it REALLY easy to hold onto my anger in adulthood. because sometimes kids don't need "it'll be fine, just hang on :)" they need "you're gonna be okay, but FUCK ALL THIS."

it's truly fucking Unconscionable to do what we do even to neurotypical, able-bodied teens with good home lives. i want to say i can't imagine being a teen with chronic fatigue and ADHD going to classes eight hours a day.... but i can!! i did that!! and almost died!!

i honestly think the lack of autonomy in the US school system is traumatic For Everybody. different levels of trauma, for sure! but i think that's part of why adults seem so disconnected from our teen years and can't remember the realities of being an adolescent. we overwrite the horrors.

the good news is: it Does get better after school. astonishingly so.

in the meantime: you don't owe anyone Anything. literally your only job right now is to survive. do whatever you need to do to not kill yourself or end up in jail. don't worry about anything else. i promise it Does Not Matter As Much As People Say It Does.

I have seen so many people fangirling and worrying about New Vegas and its endings in relation to the TV show (which you shouldn't be, you can simply ignore it! Your canon is cooler!) that I've been saddened to see almost nobody discuss my two favourite possibilities for season two: the fact that it may be paying homage to the first game and Tactics.

Lucy is obviously the Lone Wanderer -- she's looking for her dad and is happy go lucky and naive, etc, like many of us first playing Fallout 3. Over the course of the season, she becomes hardened, gaining more resolve after intimately discovering the horrors of war and the role her own father plays in them.

The Ghoul is, as close as you could argue, much the same except for the Sole Survivor. He is an angry, grieving parent who just wants to get his daughter back. Except, unlike the Sole Survivor, he's allowed to do some genuinely abhorrent things. He commits a bit of casual mass murder and cannibalism, but it's all good. Standard for your wonderfully contrasted evil karma character, and why he's so interesting in comparison to how he was before the war. Many people roleplay their Sole Survivor much the same.

But Maximus hasn't been obviously assigned a protagonist he clearly pays homage to, due to how original his own plotline is and how he is just generally disliked or ignored by the fandom simply because he is socially awkward and black. Max is my favourite, and I'm not going to be shy about this -- I love that awkward young man with every fibre of my being. He's funny! But, as much as I'd like to be, I am not here to defend Maximus from a certain subset of fans in the same way I do with Preston. I am instead here to propose which protagonist he is equivalent to: the Warrior, from Fallout Tactics.

I've yet to play Tactics personally, but I am familiar with the plot and how it's essentially schrodinger's canon. Aspects of it are canon, like the Brotherhood's usage of airships or their presence in Chicago fending off super mutants. Others, less so. Like Vault 0.

For those not in the know, Vault 0 is, to my understanding, a vault located in Colorado that hosts a device known as the Calculator. Calculator is an incredibly advanced supercomputer that manages all of Vault-Tec's vaults. The computer is powered by the cryogenically suspended brains of pre-war geniuses. Do you see where I'm going with this?

In Tactics, the Brotherhood move in to secure Vault 0 and take Calculator out of the picture. There's even a character named Maximus (who is a Paladin!) who aids the player's squad in the final battle against it.

I think that Maximus' mission in S2 is going to be a retelling and recanonisation of Tactics' plot, shifting its place in the timeline to post FO4. I mean, it makes sense given standards and precedence set by S1. Vault-Tec cryogenically suspended their best managers to selectively breed the best customer service people in existence, which obviously backfires as both Lucy and Norman unravel the truth in different ways. Vault 31 is even taken care of by a brain on a roomba!

So I'm not saying it's out of the question for Max's B-plot in season 2 to take us on Tactics' plot, and to potentially show us that that is where Barb and Janey have been the whole time. It'd get a bit dark depending on how deep they get into the territory, but Barbara Howard is so high up at Vault-Tec that she knows their most closely guarded secrets and speaks at investors meetings. She could likely have surrendered her brain to power whatever equivalent to Calculator they end up using.

I think they may end up dropping the Colorado plot thread, though, depending on how things play out. Even if Colorado is frequently referenced by various NPCs (especially Ulysses) in New Vegas, there's a chance they may move Vault 0 to California or Nevada. Maybe have it sub in for Area 51, who knows? I'm not a fly on the wall in that writer's room.

The Brotherhood's story in this show in general just seems to be full of homages or references to classics; I'm fully convinced that Knight Titus (you know, the guy who lost to a level 10 yao guai?) was named after Titus Interactive, the studio that bought out Interplay and subsequently bankrupted them. As a tongue in cheek reference, but one I can't ignore.

And what about Fallout 1? Well. I don't know if anyone noticed because it's a ten second gag that never gets brought up again, but Vault 33's water chip is broken! And even if they've relocated half of the Vault to 32 by this point, that still doesn't actually solve the problem. Hell, 32 may also have a broken water chip! My slightly more crackpot theory is that Chet's going to have a C plot where he ventures out to find a replacement water chip, a la the Vault Dweller. The director of the show seems to be a fan of the Interplay trilogy, after all.

I'm sorry if this sucks, I've had this rattling around since seeing the set leaks and it's 1am. Not proofreading this. Hope it makes sense, I may revise certain points in the future because I've not watched the show since it came out and thus spurred me into playing the games in the first place. But still! That's my theory! I'm moreso banking on Maximus Tactics than the latter, but still.

@autogeneity the ideology we were talking about combines three main things: evil to work against, good to work towards, and a decision theory based on distributed coordination that doesn't require explicit communication, just introspection on what an intelligent agent should do (this is my own take on the ideology, based on sketchy familiarity and scattered reading, so don't take it as gospel -- then again, don't take anything as gospel).

the evil part is easy:

"the capitalist hellscape" that constrains people's lives to labour in support of an evil system, run by bosses and landlords and enforced by cops and prisons and all the brutality that entails.

nationalism, borders, deportation and war and assassinations and all the inhuman violence of geopolitics.

the system of gender and the soft coercion and brutal violence employed to compel everyone to conform to it.

the majority of humans are carnivorous and raise intelligent creatures in unpleasant conditions in order to kill and eat them, which if you ascribe sufficient moral weight to such creatures easily outweighs every war or genocide in human history.

I'm sure that barely scratches the surface (I didn't even mention the US public school system or racism or Bay Area rents or whatever) but of course the big one that animates everything else in this list is (in the words of Maciej Cegłowski):

Death! The bus that one day comes for us all! The skeletal, icy hand on an unprepared shoulder! Pain, a flash of light, then numbing darkness.

which is to say the death of every individual and all that they hold dear and everyone they know and ultimately all of us, humanity snuffed out as if it had never existed, as the universe winds down to freeze in endless silence.

so that's a lot of evil, what about good? good is usually more sketchy to describe because it's hypothetical, while evil is with us right now and everyone is intimately familiar with it, even though we do have a tendency to downplay and deny the horror of it, if only to get through the day.

the greater good would combine happiness, but also agency, to avoid issues of wire-heading where everyone ends up comatose in Matrix-style pods perpetually flooded with endorphins, which would technically maximise happiness but at the cost of giving up all agency over reality.

I'm not going to spend much time on the greater good as I personally think it's incoherent, much like the human ability to say phrases like "square triangle" or "eat your cake and have it too", it's one reason why no religion has a particularly compelling vision of heaven (also I keep writing "greater food" so I must be getting hungry).

but even in the absence of the greatest possible good, it's easy to imagine a world in which humans and human derived creatures and maybe even the entire biosphere can live fulfilled lives for a thousand years and have meaningful accomplishments without the same degree of pain and suffering that we have to deal with today, so even if lower our sights to this mundane outcome it's still a dramatic leap from the world we currently inhabit.

who is working towards this better world, and how do we reach them? and who is working to keep us trapped in hell, and how do we stop them?

one decision theory would be to introspect what a sufficiently smart and moral agent would do, then do that, secure in the knowledge that other agents out there will follow the same reasoning and act in alliance with you, even if you never meet or communicate with them.

this isn't a particularly novel insight! you can dress it up in fancy terms of acausal cooperation, but it also seems very similar to the age old golden rule, or Kant's principle of "act as you would wish everyone else would act", or even "be the change you want to see in the world".

where it takes a darker turn is how you react to threats, explicit or implicit, for example if someone knows you will bargain for hostages then they will take hostages, so they have to know that you will not bargain for hostages, then they won't take hostages; in fact maybe you yourself shoot the hostages, that will demonstrate how committed you are to not giving in to blackmail, and nobody will try to use it against you.

even that logic is not quite enough to justify stabbing a guy on the street, which surely won't achieve anything useful and will attract extreme retribution, but I think you can justify it if you employ what I think of as "quantum cope" and start imagining decision theory across every possible timeline, such that even if you lose in this timeline (by being imprisoned for murder perhaps) it still has some positive effect across the multiverse generally, somehow.

I don't really believe or buy that, so I can't convincingly explain it; I think there are so many opportunities to do good that a win should obviously look like a win; if you choose to do something stupidly bad and obviously losing then constructing complicated justifications for why it's technically maybe not a loss is just foolish sophistry.

anyway, there's a lot more to it than that, because these aren't abstract ideas considered in the platonic realm but actual interactions between real people, and if you fuzz out all the words it ends up looking very similar to any other religion that weighs heaven against hell to justify their power and any other cult that manipulates its followers to break down their individual agency and subordinate them to the charismatic leader.

oooh I'm excited for this! good opportunity for me to clarify some things if anyone is new around here or just curious

if you're here for the short version, I'm definitely a wincest respecter but not necessarily a wincest shipper

if you're here for the long and more nuanced version, please read on!

I have a lot friends both here and irl who are wincesties, but the most important thing for me is that they love and defend sam. I've read wincest fics and the presence of wincest is not a deal-breaker in fics, but I prefer reading gen sam and dean on the whole. it's fun to analyze something in the show with the wincest lens on, but I can just as easily take it off. ultimately wincest is not the only version of sam and dean that I find compelling, but I don't really care if people view some of my posts as wincest (wincesties, please do interact) because I only say what I think and feel regarding the brothers. idk does that technically make me a wincest shipper? maybe some people will think it does, but ultimately I feel like the nonshipper label fits better

now I'm gonna get on my soapbox about proshipping for a moment. back in the day, what we think of as "proshipping" was just called common courtesy. I'm not saying fandom was perfect when I was younger (and I was probably too young to be in fandom then if I'm being honest) but in my experience people were more respectful about ships they didn't like, understood the difference between fiction and reality, and for the most part didn't make assumptions about people irl for things they enjoyed in fiction

of course I'm not saying you have to ship incest or want to interact with people who do, but it's crucial to curate your own space. coming on here or twitter and harassing people for shipping wincest and/or crying in the main tags about how disgusting it is just makes me lose respect for you. block what you don't want to see and move on

I will also say that being so against others shipping incest and finding yourself in the supernatural fandom is kind of a problem you created. it's kind of, well, extremely silly. wincest is the oldest ship in this fandom, like literally as old as the pilot itself, and was instrumental in first getting the show off the ground (i.e. not cancelled). also given the very not normal relationship between sam and dean, the other gothic horror elements present in the show, and the way the writers and actors regard the ship, it really should be no surprise that it is so popular

okay so now that I've gotten all of that out of the way, I'm going to address the other part of this ask, which is wincest headcanons! I don't know if these are necessarily headcanons, but it is the way I prefer my wincest when I think about it or imagine how it fits in with canon:

I definitely don't imagine them as like boyfriends, just more of what they are in the show, brothers with a complicated, intense, and abusive relationship (it being complicated does not mean you cannot call abuse what it is). I think their relationship having a sexual component would not help anything and would probably just further highlight the power imbalance present

related to above, I think dean would use sex the way he uses love and affection in canon, expertly alternating between being generous with it and withdrawing it when he's angry as means to manipulate sam and have him constantly chasing after the affection. and trust. trust especially. sometimes dean isn't even aware he's doing it (or would at least tell himself that's not what he's doing to his darling little sammy), but it's extremely effective either way. seasons 4, 5, and 8 especially would be delicious in this regard

in s7 there was a point where sex was one of the only things that kept hallucifer at bay, so sam was always torn between shaking dean awake multiple times a night in their motel rooms or handling it on his own. ultimately because I think he didn't want to "burden" dean with his visions or have them both lacking sleep all the time, he would lie and pretend that one or two times a night made lucifer go away. it became harder to pretend as we approached 7x17, and after sam "let lucifer in" in 7x15, the sex trick stopped working too. also hallucifer eavesdropping or appearing over dean's shoulder as they're having sex is very appealing to me

dean is the dom. I really can't see that any other way

dean doesn't see what he does with sam as any reflection of his sexuality, aka "it's not gay and it's not incest it's just sammy." sam probably would see it as some kind of reflection of his sexuality but wouldn't see the point in voicing that

dean was experiencing attraction to sam for a while beforehand, but I don't think they began messing around until sam was a teenager. maybe it wasn't like full blown sex then, but it was definitely something. I think a bit of precedent just adds something fun to s1, especially with dean coming to get sam in the pilot and how they interact, all that time apart, and sam's grief and guilt/dean's guilt surrounding jessica

Uh, okay. There's a kingdom. whose king and queen have died, leaving behind several possible heirs who are not their direct children. Right now, the king's first general is sitting on the throne, because the power of the army is, you know, a pretty powerful argument in a fight for the throne, right? This creepy regent is Cass. And Cass came to power thanks to Hoddie, who's basically the king's heir too, but she's pretty distant and her chances of the throne are quite slim. This has made her a professional rat and back stabber. The whole palace is busy weaving intrigue and destroying each other in a competition for power. Contests in cunning and sneakiness. A maximally intellectually uncomfortable environment in general.

Until Hoddie finds the true heiress. The king's blood daughter, to whom the throne should rightfully belong.

Problem? The problem is that the heiress needs to be two years older to be old enough to rule. And Hoddie and Cass' goal is to make sure she lives to that age in an environment where every other person wants to frame or kill her.

That heiress is you, Tap. But we couldn't think of what you'd look like in this au ahaha.

I've been in and out of using regression as a coping mechanism due to alot of factors, but I just started getting back into the community again to try it once again to help me now I have a good support system

It helps calms my anxiety and I didn't get to really be a kid growing up

I watch a lot of horror movies when regressed, I also enjoy baking but I have to be reeeeeaallly careful

I'm still getting comfortable with regressing when I need to especially around my partner even though they are perfectly fine with it

Favorite Big Activity: Crochet or Playing Fallout/Sims; Favorite Little Activity: TV and coloring or Playing Minecraft/Stardew

I was a shy kid growing up, but I could be outgoing when needed. I am kinda of shy when regressing but I'm more energetic than when I was a kid

I was an 'old soul' and told I was 'very mature' for my age. I don't know if it's me rebelling againist that but I tend to be more of a troublemaker and more excitable when regressing. I let myself get excited about things instead of muting it

It's more of a restart for me. While I watch old shows and enjoy things from the past, I have new interest now and just let myself be childish about them.

I guess so? I tend to lean towards dark colors when I'm big (Black, green, blue) and bright colors when regressed (yellow, red, blue)

She's still learning about all this but she's amazing and really helps when I'm overwhelmed by everything

I love pet names and nicknames. My cg gives me tons of them. As long as they are gender neutral or masculine, I don't mind them.

Both. It depends on my mood and how emotional I am at the time

I loooove crafts and coloring! I try to make my cg things all the time.

I have more of stutter when little as well as saying certain words different. I don't captilize or follow grammer rules when I'm little

I had this AU archived off my accounts for a few years, but I'm thinking about it a lot more these days so I'm digging it up for sketches.

This is Kudari from Codebreaker, functionally the starting antagonist for the story when Emmet accidentally collides with him and takes parts of his body.

For a little debrief, the main idea of Codebreaker is that Emmet discovers that he exists in a false reality, and that there is a parallel plane where all of the instructions for his reality exist. He finds his way to this plane by accident after walking back from another lonely day at work, and is hellbent on learning how to manipulate it in the hopes that he can recover Ingo with that knowledge. Kudari is his own set of instructions, who he partly dismantles, allowing him to actually interact with the code. This leaves a hollowed out shell that starts trying to find his own way to get his body back from Emmet.

I'd been thinking about the Beta Submas leaks which lead me to sketching him again. Here's the first rough warmup sketch I did with a fight between him and Emmet.

From there I just started reworking his old design to be worse 💀

I think the variety of pride pins with the moral panic button/Mr Faggot beadwork just. Really sells it. Shadow the Hedgehog voice Pee Your Pants. If you're going to be a shithead about me I'm going to be really annoying and do a bit about it. Plus the little golden angel pin... ALSO really pulls the whole thing together. "God help you" Right in front of my guardian angel? Really? 😒And how could I not make mention of. The Skull. I love you The Skull. It's a button (not sewn on yet, pinned) that I filled the details in w nail polish. Oh yeah! Besides the bottle cap pins (acrylics sealed with mod podge and a prayer), the biggest addition there is the chain lining the pocket flap! I think it looks SO SLICK

The pansy was gonna go on the queer side, but then I got the boutonniere idea! And I think it looks nice! Kinda adds to the asymmetry of the floral print/plaid blocking. And... of course.... I have... my friends...... 🥺 Biggest additions here are the glow-star pentagram pin, soda tabs and the heart locket!

I don't really have many new additions to the bottom pockets. Not yet! The only thing I did was stitch one side of the handcuff chain, and rearrange the pins holding up the other side. The cuffs/scorpion was just an impulse addition before going to a concert. But I do like it! And it looks even better now! Meanwhile, that other pocket, I actually have no idea what I'll do. Sakura is just there cause she matches really well, esp w the angel pin actually!

Fun fic related stuff about the diamond sword goobers below CW for: References to body horror, paranoia and a bit of unreality? hopefully using that word right

So keen eyed viewers might notice that this image has..some things in it that are a bit off. Most obvious one being Ferre, so we'll start with him. (And how convenient! He's first in line!) Ferre in my fic's universe has respawned more than a few times. Less than Evbo overall but did it over a longer period of time. Respawning in my fic has some consequences if you do it too many times. Kinda like Emesis Blue's respawn machine but not as heavy into the body horror. We're still getting into body horror territory, but nothing super extreme. Think of say, zombification. Or perhaps vampirism. A little bit of both. Its a bit hard to tell (mostly my fault for overshading him whoops.) but Ferre's skin has started to turn grey-ish in some places. Its blotchy. Scars and sewn parts of his clothes are typical of respawning, but the skin turning grey is not. We're gonna simplify this and call this process Respawn Degradation. Respawn Degradation is not fully understood, mainly because Ferre is the only lad who is actively experimenting with it (until Evbo comes around, who is also, undergoing said degradation) He documents his work in a language that only he and MinuteTech can read. Wemmbu and Julie cannot read their work, and probably shouldn't for their own sake. The way Ferre figures this stuff out is disconcerting to put it lightly. Ferre is handling this about as well as one can handle something like this happening against their will, and still has an active support group now that he is on the diamond sword level, its still not great. Just because he's stopped respawning as often doesn't make the process stop happening.

Ferre's ears look similar to MinuteTech's, and that's on purpose. MinuteTech's species is a shade, rather than a human. They come in a few varieties, and are locked to the grayscale in terms of skin color. Shades always have white eyes, and while MinuteTech resembles smoke, they can be fluffy, smooth or scaled. I'm probably gonna make them their own post. The final form of full Respawn Degradation, according to Ferre is highly suspected to be a shade. Shades naturally spawn into various civilizations, but Ferre notes that this probably isn't the only way they can occur. He's dreading the day he loses his humanity fully, but his friends that he considers his family loves him regardless, even if he thinks otherwise. MinuteTech reminds him that he isn't alone, even if he doesn't fully understand what he's actually going through. Speaking of not fully understanding..

Wemmbu is an interesting case. I have partially made them out of character, mainly because when I was characterizing him, I was going off of the finale and the gold sword level interaction. But he's still a supportive friend and sociable, but quieter and less likely to suggest bad ideas. Being the defacto therapist friend of the group, he talks with their friends and offers up advice where he can, although their knowledge is pretty thoroughly limited and also, not as reliable as it may appear. Wemmbu is also, notorious for not taking their own advice. He tends to keep to themself. And also never tells anyone anything about whats going on with him and handles himself by taking sips of slowfall potions every now and then as a form of self medicating. They've all murdered to get to paradise, but Wemmbu took the rules of the sword civilization horribly. Someone with as much compassion and empathy for others simply should not be able to handle doing the things he did. But he did them anyway. Occasionally hearing whispers, and seeing things out of the corner of his eye, feeling hands where there aren't. For awhile Wemmbu rationalized this as "being haunted". It wasn't. Despite being in a place that is safe, he sees danger where there isn't any. And when they first met Ferre, Wemmbu wasn't in as good of a spot as he is now. Occasionally hallucinations will get worse, sometimes they go away for awhile. Its generally not easy to tell what is actually there and what isn't. How do they cope with this? Writing everything. Anything. Small things, details, anything to make it easier to differentiate between reality and fabrications created by the mind. This isn't foolproof, but its been working for them so far. Wemmbu takes notes on his friends, too. This in turn also helps stave off things that don't seem to align with how they are established within their interactions. "Julie is clearly planning to poison me one day!!!" Why would she do that? She cares about him. There was nothing that would indicate this before. Disregarded. "I think Mint is planning to kill us all and run away for another civilization." Definitely not. He's insecure about that even becoming a possibility. Ignored. "Ferre is going to jump off of something. I just know it. I feel it." While he does relapse once in awhile, they know the signs of that coming when they see it. Put on hold. In the background of the image there's a faint shadow, isn't there? Its not actually there. Julie would've most certainly noticed since its pretty close to her. Its still worth documenting the appearance of it, or lack thereof. To make it less scary if it comes back later. Disclaimer btw: My writing isn't perfect. Nobody is, really. So hopefully how I characterize Wemmbu is. Okay at worst? I've personally had occasional tactile hallucinations and paranoid thoughts, but I'm not a medical expert and thus not. particularly diagnosing him with anything specific. Mainly because I too, am not diagnosed with anything specific for this. Funny, isn't it. There are things planned for Julie and MinuteTech (who goes by many nicknames in the group, for fun) but this reblog is already kinda dragging? So perhaps they'll be a future post. Preferrably not a meme one.

To explain the crime i've just committed: Drew the diamond swords in a row because I thought it would be cute. Added the color band that appeared in the diamond sword level. Realized I accidentally made Weezer's blue album cover. Went through all 5 stages of grief. Decided to double down and add the font in there for good measure because there was no way I could unsee this. You have to live with this now.

Ironically enough, just like most people struggle to differentiate between all the silm characters that basically have the same name, I have lot of struggle with silm fanart, because a lot of the characters look the same.

I'll just be mindlessly scrolling and then Boom! Guy with pointy ears and gold hair!

And initially, I went: "LEGOLAS" :D

But then I see the tags/post words and its Glorfindel.

And then I see another post with a guy with pointy ears and Gold hair and go:

"GLORFINDEL!" :D

And then its Finrod.

And I'll see fanart of another guy with gold hair/pointy ears and go:

Is this Finrod, Glorfindel or Legolas?

And then its Sauron.

And then I see a red head with pointy ears and glowing eyes and in relief go: Oh, Maedhros, my beloved ❤

And then its Sauron again. And sometimes its Maedhros. But its never the one I initially thought it would be.

And this happens to all the Silm characters for me, except of course for Varda and Feanor.

Feanor is always drawn very distinctively. There is no mistaking Feanor for Celebrimbor or Maglor or any other dark hair pointy eared guy with glowing eyes. He is (Rightly!) always drawn with a level of extreme intensity to him that the other characters lack, even if they have an intensity of their own.

(Don't get me wrong tho, I adore all Silm art. This is not me complaining.)
