Ironically enough, just like most people struggle to differentiate between all the silm characters that basically have the same name, I have lot of struggle with silm fanart, because a lot of the characters look the same.

I'll just be mindlessly scrolling and then Boom! Guy with pointy ears and gold hair!

And initially, I went: "LEGOLAS" :D

But then I see the tags/post words and its Glorfindel.

And then I see another post with a guy with pointy ears and Gold hair and go:

"GLORFINDEL!" :D

And then its Finrod.

And I'll see fanart of another guy with gold hair/pointy ears and go:

Is this Finrod, Glorfindel or Legolas?

And then its Sauron.

And then I see a red head with pointy ears and glowing eyes and in relief go: Oh, Maedhros, my beloved ❤

And then its Sauron again. And sometimes its Maedhros. But its never the one I initially thought it would be.

And this happens to all the Silm characters for me, except of course for Varda and Feanor.

Feanor is always drawn very distinctively. There is no mistaking Feanor for Celebrimbor or Maglor or any other dark hair pointy eared guy with glowing eyes. He is (Rightly!) always drawn with a level of extreme intensity to him that the other characters lack, even if they have an intensity of their own.

(Don't get me wrong tho, I adore all Silm art. This is not me complaining.)

I headcannon that in one of Maedhros less sane moments short after his rescue, where he is deemed sane enough to be left unattended, he cuts off a lot of his hair from the side of his head and keeps it that way for many years, with short periods of time where he grows it out again, just to spite as many as possible, for lack of better coping, and only grows it out fully after Nírnaeth Arnoediad.

I am lowkey terrified to ask, but I absolutely adore your Silm art (your Fëanorian designs never miss! also you somehow came up with multiple of my favorite Gil-Galad designs I've ever seen), and have been similarly stress-doodling myself through a bunch of deadlines this week, so I thought I might throw one of my Silm OCs your way. (And am hereby reassuring myself that you can just ignore any asks that don't tickle your fancy and it'll be fine :p)

I humbly submit my headcanon for Maglor's spouse for your prompt bank - he's a Noldo/Vanya who first met the family through being a sculpting student of Nerdanel's, but didn't actually end up with Maglor until the Kidnap Fam years (and it was exactly as doomed and tragic as it sounds). Tall, broad-shouldered (hauling blocks of marble around is hard work!), long red-gold hair, eyes roughly the color of forget-me-nots; A bit on the paler side, but has one of those complexions that turns golden in the sun. Terribly beautiful, in the way people often think of when they think of Greek statues, albeit with that sharp Noldo jawline/cheekbone profile.

Wow ok so, like describing him as a marble statue? Inspired. It gave me such a Specific image in my brain. I generally love to bedazzle my elves, but this guy? No sir. He immediately gave me the vibe of a guy who absolutely lets his face do the talking.

I hate Tumblr's search function, and it hates me! In recent years, I've discovered the search function simply will not bring up posts from earlier than just a few years back, even if it was ridiculously popular back in the day. This, of course, excludes a significant amount of deeply lovely fanart from ever seeing the light of day again. There is so much fanart for Tolkien's works that has been lost to time on the greater internet, and I want to make sure the stuff we have here on Tumblr doesn't go that way, too!

With that in mind - please feel free to use the askbox to submit URLs of fanart you enjoy, or blogs I should go hunt through! Please @ me/tag me in posts as well if you're able - I'll see that and can go reblog it. I want to gather as much art as I possibly can here, and though I'll reblog anything from any time period, things from many years ago are absolutely gold to me and I want to bring them to the surface as much as possible.

My tag system is pretty simple: I tag based on character and story. There's definitely nuance to this - for instance, I'll tag fanart of little!Elrond and Elros as "silm", and fanart of adult Elrond as "lotr" - but I try my best. If you have any tags you'd like me to start adding to things, drop me an ask about it! I care deeply about information architecture and want to make sure it's as easy as possible for people to find things on here.

On my own I reblog things based on what I can find and what I'm interested in - for instance, I know less about the characters from The Silmarillion (edit, so I read the silm, sorry guys), haven't watched Rings of Power (edit, lmao oops now I have!), and adore Thranduil - but I will reblog anything sent to me or anything I'm tagged in, so don't feel like you need to limit yourself to things I reblog often!

I definitely will! the silmarillion (and lotr in general) is one of my fave subjects, so I feel bad for neglecting it for so long :'D and I do have some half-finished stuff for it that I should get around to eventually...but yeah! I go through phases but my love for tolkien's world is forever 🫶

4. Is there a popular pairing you don’t necessarily dislike but aren’t too invested in?

I suppose Russingon. I tend to view their relationship as queerplatonic or a strong platonic bond, so I’m not as invested in them as a romantic ship. But there are a lot of great fics and art for them out there, which I love seeing! 💛

23. Has your favorite character/ ship changed over time?

So my favorite Tolkien character has always been Aragorn. He is the OG. I tacked on Lúthien and Glorfindel to the favorite characters list as I learned more about them!

As for favorite ships, my initial fave was Aragorn/Éowyn! I still love them so much, though I also support the canon relationships they ended up in. I just want good things for both characters. :P

After that, my favorite ship was Angbang! I actually saw fanart for this ship before even getting into the Silm, and it prompted me to try reading it. I did not get very far, but I still enjoyed seeing Angbang fanart. 😂

I have adored Beren and Lúthien since successfully reading the Silm, and their book only added to my love for the couple. Theirs is a fairy tale-like story with so many twists and subversions!

As for Glorestor, that might be my newest favorite Tolkien ship! I have loved them for years, but I admit I forgot about Erestor for a long while before stumbling across him in some fanfics. Sorry, Erestor!

Hello!! I just wanted to say I really like your art style! It’s so adorable😃😃 I just recently started reading the silmarillion, and im literally stuck ruminating over the first 5 pages becos of how interesting and crazy this lore is (I love melkor thus far)..

Also random question but have you played Middle earth shadow of Mordor/ shadow of War? I finished both games recently and they’re incredible (I bought the silmarillion soon after learning that celebrimbor from the games originated from the book, I love that little guy🙃)

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

I love seeing kind, good, loving, trusting Celebrimbor. I love how many people have read the silm and just go 'oh he's baby, he's so good, he's so openhearted' because they're RIGHT. I just adore that interpretation and I've been seeing so much of it lately. It makes me so happy!

im opinionated so absolutely!! didnt like hk/iceland (hetalia) or fruk (hetalia again lol). didnt like yuri/otabek (yoi), most byleth/student ships (femblem), jeanluc (when i was into genshin). currently dont like renheng (it's just not my thing), jing yuan/fu xuan (also not my thing) or dan heng/anyone tbh (although i make exceptions for tb). i dont have any massive reasons for disliking them theyre just either not my thing or dont align with my hcs (shrug)

any jing yuan/hcq feels vaguely icky to me because they knew him as a teenager while they were adults (aside from yingxing since his age is more ambiguous and it seems like he mightve grown up at the same time jy did?)

this is a good question and i dont really know the answer. my taste tends to favour characters who make a good parental unit (seongjoong, jingliu/baiheng), but i also enjoy the dynamics of amoral pairs (kafblade), as well as goofy lesbians having a good time (stellemarch)

What you absolutely hate in a ship?

if its boring tbh. if something feels boring or overdone im p much guaranteed not to like it. like jeanluc? theyre just boring to me. i also really dont enjoy the 'i knew you when you were a kid and then you grew up hot and now we're dating' thing

About 3'6", sorta ofmd stede bonnet-ish in build and general face shape? and also in general fashion sense and demeanor, tbh. roughly the same age as ring quest era frodo, actually, based on our party trying to do math about what year it is in game.

kinda tan, brown eyes, mousey brown hair. lots of freckles. has a scar across his nose.

missing his right hand (a werewolf bit it off)!!!!!!!!!! AND is showing it off. leaves it uncovered, save for sometimes the assistive brace he uses for his archery.

color scheme is dark blue and royal purple, with some white to break things up. gold as his accent metal and ruby as his stone!!

fancy dresser!! likes suit vests, cravats, and poofy-sleeved blouses. pushes his sleeves up so his forearms are uncovered usually. loves some fancy embroidery.

statement piece is a floor length, slightly heavier cape with dark blue fabric as the base, heavily embroidered down the outside with iridescent (probably fake) “dragon” scales. golden clasp and gold shoulder pieces.

wears a single dangling ruby earring, inlaid in gold, in his left ear. has an ornate ruby and gold necklace he wears to match.

arm guard on his left arm for archery purposes!! i think the leather is probably a dark brown but tbh it's just whatever looks best with the aforementioned color scheme

I love that she's renowned as a craftswoman and a genius in her own right The descriptions of her art in the Shib are lovely - many things she wrought also of her own thought in shapes strong and strange but beautiful. Such an evocative description! I can literally picture them in my mind

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

I think I'm becoming a crispy Amrod truther again because the whole saga with the naming and renaming of Amrod is sooo juicy and doesn't really make sense in an unburnt Amrod scenario? Like the whole saga is messy and kind of iconic - giving your twins the same name and then changing it to Doomed for one of them and refusing to budge partly to fuck with your failhusband!! This is to say she's perfectly capable of being stubborn and petty just like Feanor. Marriage (and divorce) made in elf heaven

Keeps her hair pretty short because it's just more practical for when she's working. This is part of the reason that she's not considered especially fair.

Indis! The friendship between her and Indis is something I do with was included in the published Silm. I love that Nerdanel is explicitly stated to respect Indis, which Feanor absolutely didn't, implying she's good at waiting to get to know someone before making a judgement about them. I also love that they lived together for a time!

Finwe. How did she feel about Feanor's adoration of him? As we've seen above, she doesn't always agree with his takes on people. How did she feel about his leaving Indis to go to Formenos with Feanor and her sons?

She has quite a blunt and abrasive personality. Those that click with it click with it, and those that don't don't. I think Indis appreciated her frankness as a breath of fresh air from court life.

11. Recommend a fic with an unusual/original headcanon or characterisation that you loved

Oh, I read a really lovely fic last year, Helevorn: A Summer Romance, with an unusual take on the wife of Caranthir - Lake Helevorn herself! Coming from a Celtic Studies background (er, sort of), I'm fascinated by the mythological concept of a ruler having a symbolic marriage to his territory, so I loved this. The atmosphere of the story is so beautiful, dreamlike, with the very sense of being underwater.

12. Recommend some fanart of an uncommon character, place, or event

I remember being delighted to see this adorable art by @snartha of Meleth and wee!Eärendil. To date, it's the only art of Meleth I've ever seen, which is criminal, because I love her. How can you not love a woman who basically uses Morgoth as the Elves' equivalent of the monster under the bed? XD

Thingol is definitely a character who's grown on me since I first read the Silm. I didn't even particularly dislike him before, except during the early part of the Beren and Lúthien story, but seeing fandom Hating Him Wrong rather put me in his corner. :P But then I read The Children of Húrin, which makes it really even more clear how he does at least try to learn from past mistakes and apply that moving forward, and it's touching how much he really does love Túrin (as he came to love Beren). Plus the scene with him trying to put Nellas at ease with a stupid joke... well, how can you not find that endearing? 💕
