Your eyes itched as you dragged them open the next morning. The tears you shed last night had completely exhausted you by the time you got back to your room in the Palace, you had just flopped into bed without changing, skirts covered in melted icing.
A part of you was glad for it, as you had something to distract yourself from the soreness of heart break in your chest. You had no idea what you were going to do when you headed to court. The Kingâs personal guard would be there, and as far as you were aware, he hadnât seen you the previous night.
Which means to him, nothing had gone wrong between the two of you.
You werenât sure what to do knowing that. You could: A) Pretend nothing is wrong, carry on with this affair like youâd never seen what you had, or B) End things with the Orc and live with the guilt of what you did for the rest of your life.
Option A was just too difficult for you to do. You couldnât bare the thought of doing something so heartless to that lovely Orc lady who worked in the kitchens. She was too kind to you, and always willing to lend a shoulder when you needed it⌠She would be a great mother.
So, it looks like option B is the only way to go.
As you finished remaking your bed, a shaky sigh escaped you as you leaned against your mattress, trying to steady yourself to face the day.
Leaving your quarters, you walked through the halls with your head in the clouds, thinking about how exactly you were supposed to end this affair. Would the Kingâs guard be angry? Upset?
After stewing on it, a wave of indignity washed over you. Really, none of this is your fault, itâs not like you were aware of his marriage. So, why should you be the one to break it off?
Of course, the last thing you wanted was to stay with the Orc, but if anything, he should be the one ending things with you! He was the one who chose to lie to you and hurt you in that way.
But how would you send that message to him? Itâs not like you could just tell him what you saw. He might try to convince you to stay with him and you would not be persuaded into doing such a thing.
⌠Maybe, if you ignored him, heâd get the message and just leave you alone? Then that way, heâd know that you were angry with him and then, he would have no choice but to apologise to you. Heâs not a stupid Orc, he should realise sooner or later what you were upset with him about.
But then, how do you regain your dignity as a Lady?
You chewed your lip as you greeted the Queen, apologised for your lateness and then followed her, alongside the other ladies in waiting to the throne room.
Thinking about this anymore would have to wait. You had a job to do as the Queens lady in waiting.
Their excited whispers brought you back down to Earth.
âDo you think that heâs handsome?â
âI donât know, have you ever seen a forest dweller before?â
âWell no, but that doesnât mean that heâs not good looking!â
â(Y/N) what do you think?â
âHm?â You looked over your shoulder at the others. âWhat are you talking about?â
âYouâve really been all over the place this week havenât you?â One of the ladies said, âyou know weâve been preparing for the Forest Fae? Well, the Lord of the Forest Fae, is apparently, devilishly handsome. And, heâs not married or in any other kind of commitment with a woman or man!â
Another one of the ladies giggled, âdo you think heâs come here looking for someone to marry?â
âUnlikely.â The third lady said, dismissively. âMen of any species love to flounder, even when theyâre married. Why make their promiscuity more complicated than it has to be? You agree with me, donât you (Y/N)?â
You didnât answer. Due to recent experience, you had no interest in trying to romance a Fae Lord, there was no point in trying to if he was so easily led astray. âAll men seemed to be like that.â You said, callously. âEven if he is loyal to those he sleeps with, Iâm not looking to marry a Fae Lord.â
âOh come on (Y/N), donât pretend youâre not even slightly interested!â
âLadies,â The Queen shushed and all the other women fell silent. âGossip is unbecoming of all of you. If any of you wish to become involved with the Lord, Iâve heard heâs not one for those who spread rumours.â
Upon reaching the throne room, all the chattering of the ladies had fallen silent.
The doors to the impressive room opened, the Queen, you and the other ladies in waiting taking their respective places next to their mistress as they waited for the Fae Lord to make his entrance.
Sunlight caught the Queenâs glittering necklace, making you look around in surprise. And infuriatingly, you caught the Kingâs Guardâs eye. He smiled at you, eyes kind and wide like he was expecting you to return it.
Instead, you whipped your head away from him and locked on the throne room door. Other courtiers bustled around the room, discussing whatever was on the nobles minds at that moment in time.
For now, you would just have to stick to your plan of ignoring him. What else could you do until you could think of something more suitable for vengeance?
Soon, the doors to the throne room opened and the whole room fell silent.
The first few Fae glided in like they were sliding on ice, their ethereal beauty suffocating and snuffing out any other attractive person in the room. There were eight of them, four entering from opposite sides of the doors, who twirled in what looked to be spider web like dresses, their skirts sparkling in the light as they came to a stop, their long blonde hair falling down their backs with an eery gracefulness.
One of the ladies next to you mumbled something about how the Fae were so lucky, but you were so focused on not looking around at the Orc standing beside the King, that you couldnât hear what the rest of her sentence was about.
After the graceful â and attention stealing â dance, a Fae man, taller than the others youâd seen so far, graced the courts prescence.
His hair was so white you might have thought that he was an old man, if not for his smooth skin untouched by aging. His eyes were deep pools of black that threatened to suck you in and never let you go, while his smile was kind and serene.
The Fae Lord came to a stop a few feet away from the thrones, and bowed his head. âYour Majestys, it is so wonderful to see you all again. Iâm so pleased that I could finally make this trip like my father before me.â
âAnd we are pleased to have you, my Lord.â The King returned. âAs itâs your first time staying here at the Palace, weâve prepared a little celebration in honour of your new positionâŚâ
As the King droned on about how he hopes that this will be the new beginning of a fruitful alliance between humans and Fae, yada-ya, a chill went down your spine.
While the Kingâs announcement had been going in one ear and out the other, you brought yourself back into the room and carefully searched for the source of your discomfort⌠only to find the Fae Lord, looking directly at you.
You stood a little taller, returning his gaze in an attempt to be polite. When you gave him a polite inclination of the head, his smile widened as the King finished his speech.
âAnd so, we will have this little ball to welcome you and hope that your stay will be as comfortable as possible.â
âYes,â the Fae Lord said, airily. âIâm sure it will be.â He turned to look back at the King and inclined his head once again. âI appreciate that the ball isnât until tonight, and since this is your court, Iâd like to ask if I can be a little forward, your Majesty?â
The King frowned, but nodded his head.
âYou see, I couldnât help but notice that lovely lady standing over there,â the Fae Lord pointed at you, âand was wondering if it would be too much for me to ask her for her first dance tonight?â
Your eyes widened.
The other ladies beside you, nudged you in the ribs. âSo it was you he was looking at! I was wondering why his eyes were wandering, I thought he was just bored!â
Face burning, your eyes darted to the Queen and in the process, caught sight of the Orcs face.
His nose was scrunched up as he snarled, âawfully cocky, arenât you?â
The Fae Lord ignored the Orc as he looked at you once again, hands behind his back.
When you looked at the Queen, she smiled at you and jerked her head to the Fae. âWell? You donât have to ask me for permission, Lady (Y/N).â
All eyes on you, you bit your lip and sucked in a deep breath. Most of all, you could feel the Orcâs eyes baring into the side of your skull, like he was trying to make you face him, daring you to accept the Lordâs offer.
But the image you saw the previous night, flashed through your mind.
Spite leading you, you answered the Fae Lord. âIâll have my first dance with you, my Lord.â You said, firmly.
The Fae bowed his head to you, âI look forward to it, my Lady.â And with that, he said his goodbyes to the King and Queen before the entire court was dismissed.
The rest of the day went by with a bubbly air, all the ladies sneaking glances and smiles at you as you went about your day.
You, yourself, could hardly believe that you had accepted the dance. It was true, you werenât interested in romancing this Fae Lord in the slightest⌠but if it meant that you could piss off the Kingâs Guard, then you would gladly accept anything else that the Fae Lord had to offer.
After all, itâs not like the Orc could jump in and say that you couldnât do something, people would get suspicious then.
As soon as the Queen had sent the ladies in waiting to go and prepare for the ball later in the afternoon, they all pounced on you.
âI canât believe it!â One of them said as they took you by the wrist. âHe really asked you, in front of the whole court!â
âItâs just a dance,â you told them all as you made your way back to your apartments. And that was all it would probably be, you told yourself. âIt was just formality that I accept him. It would have been an awful start to his stay if I had told him no.â
âBut even so, to ask you in front of the entire court!â Another one of the ladies squawked. âHe must really like you.â
âWe havenât even formally met.â You said.
âOh canât you just be romantic for one minute?!â The first Lady huffed. âIâm imagining a star-crossed lovers romance, where he dramatically proposes to you just before heâs about to leave, flying through the corridors, abandoning his carriage in search of you-â
âAlright.â You said, firmly. âI get it. Well you can have your fantasies all you like.â Once you reached your apartments, you yanked open the door and slammed it shut behind you, locking the other ladies outside.
Sliding to the floor, you pulled your knees to your chest and squeezed. When youâd first started seeing the Orc, all you did was fantasize like that. Dream of running away with him and sharing all sorts of romantic ventures together.
But any kind of desire for that experience had left the moment you saw his wife.
You didnât want to colour all men with the same brush, but a betrayal like the Orcs, isnât something that you can just shake off.
And although it gave you the slightest bit of pleasure to know that the Orc was angry with the Fae, you knew you couldnât allow yourself to get caught up in the romance of it all. He may be the exact same as the Kingâs Guard for all you knew.
And⌠you didnât want to end up hurt again.
Once evening finally did come around and you joined with the other ladies in waiting â who were all too eager to have you be the leader of the group â the ballroom was full of chatter, people drinking and watching couples dance in the centre of the room.
âOh, heâs not here yet?â Frowned a lady beside you, âdonât worry, heâll turn up soon Iâm sure, most of the other Fae are here. You should sit by the entrance that way, heâll see you as soon as he enters.â
The suggestion made you want to roll your eyes. While you were going to dance with this Fae, you didnât want to be seen as desperate for company. Taking a glass of wine from a passing waiter, you decided to hover to the side of the room.
As you sipped on the delicate glass, your eyes scanned the room where you spied the Queen dancing with the King, the other ladies mingling and chatting animatedly with other guests.
You caught yourself glancing at the entrance to the doors a lot. Keeping an eye out for the Fae Lord. You had to keep internally slapping yourself. This was just a means of getting back at the Kingâs guard.
And perhaps it was because the Kingâs guard was standing opposite the room, within perfect line of sight of keeping an eye on you that you were eager for the Fae Lord to arrive.
The Orcâs eyes glazed over the room, mostly following the King, but occasionally, he found you.
Anger boiled in your veins as you kept your eyes firmly fixed on the doors to the ballroom.
Even now, the Orc was good at keeping his affection for you a secret.
A part of you wanted to throw the wine glass in your hand at him, just to keep him on edge.
But, before you could put your thoughts into practice, gasps echoed around the room, drawing your attention to the ballroom doors.
The crowd parted as the Fae Lordâs eyes searched the room and found you. His eyes lit up at the sight of you and he passed through the crowd of people, and held a hand out to you. âThere you are,â he said, smiling. âWhat are you doing hiding in the shadows over here? A pretty thing like you shouldnât be hidden away like this.â
You shook your head as he took a wine glass from a waiter and sipped from it, âdo you mind if I have a drink before we dance?â
âNo, not at all my Lord.â You replied.
Over his shoulder, you chanced a glance at the Orc, whose eyes were now locked onto you and the Lord.
The Fae spoke, âIâm sorry I didnât ask for your name first before asking for your dance, my LadyâŚ?â
â(Y/N).â You answered smiling. âThank you, for asking me for this dance.â You held your hand out to him, which he took and pressed a kiss onto your knuckles. A pleasant chill ran up your arm.
The Fae Lord bowed his head as he took another sip from his glass. âItâs an honour that you accepted. I should be thanking you for not humiliating me in front of all those courtiers.â
You chuckled at that. âI wouldnât have done that to you, that wouldâve been cruel, even if you were being very forward.â
âI just donât have a care for all of these silly procedures,â the Fae said, waving his free hand around the ballroom. âThereâs no point in any of it, Iâd have preferred that the King and I just talk about what Iâm here for and then to just leave, you know. But, a simple ball isnât so bad.â
âSo, youâd say youâre a simple man?â You asked.
âCompletely.â The Fae finished his drink and you rushed to do the same too.
âMy Lady, please, donât do that on my account, we have the whole evening to dance, you can take your time.â He pulled the glass by the stem away from your lips.
You frowned, holding your free hand up to cover your mouth. âBut I donât want to keep you waiting, it would be rude of me to do that.â
With a sly wink, the Fae Lord said in a low whisper, âif I didnât want to be kept waiting by you, I wouldnât have asked for your first dance.â
You gave him a suspicious look, to which the Lord replied, âI want to get to know you, (Y/N).â
âWhy?â You asked, shortly. âWeâve never even met before.â
The Fae Lord didnât flinch at your tone. Instead, he searched your eyes. âBecause, it seemed as though you were in need of some cheering up.â He said, simply. âAnd I donât like seeing people upset.â
With a gentle smile, he patted your shoulder. âDonât feel like you have to tell me whatâs going on right now, after all, we did just meet each other. But whenever youâre ready, Iâm here if you want to talk.â
You stared at him. Was he being serious? As you looked into his eyes you could sense no malice, no playfulness or manipulation in his face⌠Maybe, it wouldnât be so bad to give this Fae a chance?
Once youâd finished your drink the pair of you took to the dance floor.
And for the next few days, he always made a point of talking to you. At first, it was mundane things, how did you sleep? Did you eat breakfast yet? Before it became more involved questions, like what your family did for business, asked about your other ladies in waiting and if they were doing well.
And gradually, you started to look forward to your little chats and began to ask about him and his life. It turned out he was an only child and took the Lordship after his father had died of some kind of tree associated illness.
He was funny, had a quick wit and was fond of lymerics. He liked the smell of morning dew on grass and the way the forest smelt after a rain storm. Oh, and he enjoyed rum cake.
Your stomach bubbled with excitement every morning now at the prospect of seeing him around the Palace and speaking to him in the evening, the Orc barely even crossed your mind anymore.
Except for when you were on your way to your apartments one time, and the Orc ambushed you from a dark corner of the halls.
âWhat is with you?â He snarled at you. âYouâre completely ignoring me in favour of that pretty Fae man.â
You didnât spare the Orc a glance and kept walking. âHeâs nice to me.â You shrugged, âI canât talk to other men?â
âItâs not just talking to other men!â The Orc hissed. âYouâve been ignoring me and the gifts I leave you, along with letters as well! Whenever I enter your rooms to give you something else, the other gift is always left unopened!â
He grabbed you by the wrist, forcing you to stop in your tracks. He tightened his grip, âdid I do something wrong?â He asked you. âTell me if I have, I will do what I have to do make up for it.â
Anger flared like a fire stoked with gunpowder. You wanted to yell at him, to shout at him that he should go back to his wife, confess that he was an adulterer and that he should be begging for her forgiveness.
But for some reason, you couldnât let that anger escape. It refused to climb up and out of your throat. You shook your hand free of his grip. âYou really want to fix it?â you hissed. âYou can leave me alone. Pretend that this never happened. Take your hush gifts and give them to the person who really deserves them!â
And with that, you stormed off to your apartments.
Once you were inside the drawing room, you let out a groan of frustration. Of course, going off with the Fae Lord was definitely one way of getting revenge⌠but it didnât feel like it was enough.
You still felt awful for the Orc lady, who was pregnant with that adulterers baby. There had to be something else you could do⌠some other way of getting back at him and really sticking it to the Kingâs guard.
And then, an idea came to you. It was a risk to ask, sure⌠but, the Fae Lord really seemed genuinely interested in you. And he did say himself that he would be open to listening to you if you had any problems. Who knows? Maybe he would be up for your revenge too.
So, that night you arranged a private dinner for the two of you, away from court to tell him what was really going on.
He was perplexed by your request to meet him in a place away from the public eye, but never the less accepted and arrived to dinner with that same pleasant smile he always gave you.
âWhatâs all this about?â He had asked as you finished setting the table.
You intertwined your fingers together and clasped them in front of you, as if you were about to start praying.
â⌠Do you remember when you told me that you could sense a sadness within me?â You asked. And over dinner, you told him everything. The secretive meetings, the presents. As you told your sombre tale, you realised how badly it all truly sounded.
Of course, the affair was awful enough on itâs own⌠but the fact that the Fae Lord had been unwittingly helping you in your payback, would come across as you using him.
And as you finished with the climax of your story, the Fae Lordâs fists clenched tighter around his cutlery. His jaw tightened.
You bit your lip, wanting to explain yourself. âI have to say that your asking me to dance in front of the whole court was what inspired me to continue on with this plan of revenge. I have truly enjoyed spending time with you and didnât mean to use you my LordâŚâ
âYou have nothing to be sorry for.â The Fae spat. âItâs an awful thing for him to do to you, itâs no wonder he was so against us dancing and being seen together in the first place. I had half a mind to complain to the King about his behaviour.â
He knocked the butt of his fork on the table as the Lord looked around your drawing room, like there would be some kind of explanation somewhere. âHow dare he use someone like that to get his own rocks off!â The Fae Lord hissed. âAnd especially you. You should have told me sooner, this isnât something that you should have to deal with alone!
âNo, do you know what?â The Fae pointed at you, âdonât do anything else until I say so, alright? Weâre going to get this bastard man-whore⌠or should it be Orc-whore?â He gave you smug smile as you laughed. âFor this plan to work,â he continued, âIâll need to ask permission from someone before I go through with it.â
You frowned. âAsk permission for what?â
The Fae Lord gave another sly grin, âItâs a surprise.â His smile faded as he reached out across the table with a free hand and took yours in his, âIâve grown very fond of you, (Y/N) and I hope that you have of me too, so with that in mind, please trust me, okay?â
He was right, you had grown fond of him and his presence. It would be strange for him to not be around in court any more. Your heart sunk in your chest at the realisation that he wouldnât be around for much longer.
You nodded. Lowering your head, you stared at your empty plate and sighed. â⌠I feel really silly for thinking that he could have actually liked me.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â The Fae Lord asked, frowning. âI like you.â
You sighed. âI mean honestly liked me. Not just used me as a means to have an affair⌠I thought that we would get married one day andâŚâ You gripped your skirts.
For a moment, the Fae stayed silent. âYou donât deserve to be loved by trash like him.â He said, firmly. He gave another squeeze of your hand. âAnd weâll make sure he knows it. So donât put yourself down, alright? Itâs not you whoâs in the wrong, itâs him.â
And once again, he was right. You sniffed. It made you feel a lot better to hear someone say it out loud, and to talk to someone about this affair. It was like a huge weight had been lifted off your chest.
Weeks went by and everything continued on as it had been before. The Fae Lord acted no differently than before your dinner together and the Kingâs guard grew more and more furious each time he saw you and the Fae together.
He had stopped bothering you since youâd told him to leave you alone⌠but there was still that foreboding feeling that the Orc was still looking for ways to win back your approval, proved by his scathing looks of the Fae Lord when you and he were together.
And with that feeling hovering in the air at court, you began to realise how stupid you must have been, to believe that you were only worthy of such a deceitful kind of love. You deserved so much more, wanted so much more.
The strangest part about knowing that, was that you felt it might come true very soon. You didnât know how you could tell, you just knew it.
You began to worry as the final days of the Fae Lordâs stay drew near. There still had been no update on the Lordâs revenge plan and when you asked him about it, heâd always reassured you and given your hands a reassuring squeeze. âIâm just making the final preparations, alright? Donât worry about a thing, Iâve got this.â
It was all too soon that the final week of his stay around. Everyone in the Palace was suddenly mournful that the Fae Lord and his company would be departing.
The Monday of the week the Lord was going to leave, you awoke to find a gift box. It was carved of wood, the bark of the tree still on itâs exterior and top, with a mossy bow tying it shut.
And as you opened it up, you couldnât help but gasp at the sight you saw. In a bed of moss, was a necklace made of spider web, droplets of water beads strewn around it delicately. Underneath it, was a note:
I would like to give you a surprise gift every day leading up to the final day before I leave. I hope that if you appreciate this gift, youâll wear it today and the others that are to come.
Others to come? Was this part of the revenge plan that the Lord had cooked up?
Without a second thought, you put on the gift and when you entered the Queenâs apartments that morning, all the of other ladies practically screamed with excitement for you.
Even the Queen â who never normally allowed herself to be emotional â got involved with her ladies delighted chattering.
The next morning, it was a bracelet made of hardened tree sap â the note detailed that if you licked it, it would make for a good snack â the morning after that, a broach made of butterfly wings.
And every day you wore them, eventually looking more and more like a forest Fae than a human noblewoman.
When the day finally came of the Fae Lordâs departure, you found that there was no gift that morning. Although strange, it didnât surprise you.
He was leaving today after all, perhaps he just didnât have time to leave one final gift.
With a heavy heart, you made your bed, adorned yourself with all the gifts you had received that week, and set off to go to court to wish the Fae Lord a good journey home.
Following the Queen to the throne room, the rest of the ladies in waiting seemed to be uncharacteristically quiet. When you gave them strange looks, they all pursed their lips or looked away from you, as if they were trying to hide something from you.
Even the Queen refused to look at you. Although you were sure that you caught a small smile on her lips whenever you all turned a corner.
When you entered the throne room, it was packed with courtiers, all chattering as usual. But there was something different in the air. You werenât sure what it was, but there was certainly something going on without your knowing.
Once you had taken your place beside the Queen, the doors to the throne room opened and in stepped the Fae Lord with his company.
You had hoped that he would make time for a private goodbye, or at least tell you how his plans for revenge had been progressing.
The whole time you had seen him in court or in other places in the Palace, it seemed as though he was doing nothing to try and help you with your revenge plan.
A part of you wanted to be angry with him for being so slacked about it.
But you couldnât bring yourself to be. At the end of the day, youâd been able to get back at the Orc in some way; throughout the whole week of you wearing the gifts that the Fae Lord had been giving you, the Kingâs guard said nothing to you, apart from giving you foul glares from across the room whenever he saw you.
âYour Majesty's, I must thank you for your hospitality these past weeks, it has been nothing but delightful.â The Fae Lord announced.
As soon as the sentence had left his lips, the whole court went silent, hanging onto his every word.
âBut, if you do not mind, your Majesty,â he looked at the Queen, âI would like to steal one of your ladies in waiting.â
You furrowed your eyebrows at him as the Queen smiled at him. âBut of course, itâs been difficult to ignore that you certainly have a favourite among my girls.â She looked at you and tilted her head. âGo on, (Y/N).â
Your head darted between the two. Again, you caught the Orcs eye, who gave you a warning look of carefully concealed fury.
At that, you straightened your back and headed over to the Fae Lord. Once you had come before him, he held his hand out to you.
You took it. Sandwiching your hand between his, he looked you in the eye. âI know weâve only known each other for a few weeks,â he said, âbut theyâve been some of the best weeks of my life. Youâre funny and smart,â he lowered his voice. âVengeful.â
Rolling your eyes with a smile, he continued, âbut most of all, you make me happy. So, I ask that you come back to the forest with me and be my wife?â
Your jaw dropped and you clasped your hands to your mouth. âYou⌠you canât be seriousâŚâ
The Fae Lord let an abashed smile come over him. âI am⌠so, if youâll have me as a husbandâŚâ He pulled a ring, made of wood from his pocket, a white, misted crystal adorned the top of the ring. âThis is the final gift⌠Iâm sorry that there wasnât one for you to wake up to this morning, but I felt you may appreciate it more if I gave it to you in front of everyone.â He gave you a knowing look.
You allowed a devious grin to broaden your lips.
An aww escaped the crowd, followed by a few claps. But before you could give your reply, a shout rang out.
âNo!â You and the Fae Lord whipped around to find the Kingâs guard, abandoning his post. âNo, this is completely inappropriate!â
The Fae Lord pushed you behind him, as the Orc towered over the pair of you. He jabbed a thick green finger at the Fae, âwhat makes you think you can just wander in here and take one of the ladies in waiting?!â
âActually,â the Fae returned, plainly. âHer father gave me permission. I asked him last night before coming here⌠Unlike some people here, Iâm actually upfront with future family.â
Your eyes widened as the court gasped and muttering began to rise from the onlookers.
You gripped the Faeâs arm and squeezed it. âNo, please donât. Youâve done enough.â
He looked at you, then back at the Orc. âWell, itâs all down to (Y/N)s decision anyway.â The Fae Lord raised an eyebrow and smirked. âAfter all, itâs not like you have any interest in her, is it?â
The Kingâs guard scowled at the Fae. But he said nothing.
âCome back here, now!â The King snapped from his throne. âDonât ruin this moment for the Lady (Y/N) any more than you have!â
âBut you canât possibly allow this!â The Orc turned to face the Monarchs.
âI just did.â The King glared at his guard. He looked at you with kind eyes as he went on, âwell, what is your answer?â
Looking directly at the Orc, you took the ring from the Fae Lord and slid the ring on your finger as slowly as possible.
The Fae Lord grinned and pulled you into a tight hug as the court let out an applause.
Wishing the court goodbye, you and the Fae Lord turned and left, without even giving a second glance to the Orc, who was left in the centre of the room, stunned.
âNow this, was a great revenge plan.â You whispered as the pair of you walked down the corridors.
You bit your lip, âI⌠I was worried that this was just going to be some kind of holiday fling for you.â
The Fae Lord stopped in his tracks, taking your hand. âMy darling, I could never, do that to you.â

Eugene's robe is real and it is mine.
You'll forgive me for not wearing it off-shoulder right at the mo, since Tumblr has a problem with tiddies and all.
Construction details under the cut
Now if you read my tags on the previous post, you'll know that it was my intention to make this robe out of some silk that had been languishing in my fabric storage, small problem though
Not all of it is black
(Left two are raw silk, different weights, right's a haboti silk scarf)
Now that's an easy enough fix
I did have to do about three passes to get them to match though, as black is a notoriously hard colour to dye
Next one must make a mock-up out of an inferior material, this here is poplin.
Now if you were just making this costume-quality, this material would be fine, slap on a collar, hem and overlock this guy and he'll do great, I'm just extra.
You'll also note the piecing on the shoulders here, that is because i did not have enough silk to cut it all in one piece
That picture to the right is how much in total was left as offcuts from all the silk used.
Fun huh?
Does also mean it's not floor length, but on the plus side it's my preferred length anyway
Eugene proper doesn't need to move his legs when walking after all
Anyways then it was just a matter of sewing the whole thing together (no pics, soz) most of it is machine sewn (silk thread) with top stitched flat felled seams, that includes the split in the back where it essentially runs from a flat felled seam to a hem by just pressing outwards and tucking under.
The entire collar was whipped stitched down on the inside within the seam allowance to avoid any top stitching lines on the outside or nasty flappy bits on the inside. (And because haboti LOVES to warp, which was not entirely circumvented with this method)
The arms eye seams were also hand finished with an invisible felling whip stitch, and the sleeve bottoms hemmed with a sort of invisible pad stitch.
The several days worth of hand stitching just listed is why this took me a while.
And so i chose a good-enough scarf for a shash-yeah jk i made the sash from scratch out of yet more Haboti silk and dyed it.
I don't think it's quite dark enough so I may dye it again later.
If you want a approx amount of fabric that's in this piece, the robe is a bit over 4 meters of silk Total?
And the sash is about 3mx70cm on top of that.
Now I'm gonna go luxuriate in this robe I stole from our fictional son, happy S3 E2 of Midnight Alley y'all!
#I'd get nicer photos but I'm exited and also not waiting for the weather to clear#maybe later#if i make this a full cosplay#dunno if this'll be useful to anyone making their own#but i recommend consuming vampire and conspiracy based media while making it#since that what i did and it turned out great#drawtectives#Eugene Finch#Eugene Drawtectives#drawtectives season 3#Midnight Alley#Drawtectives cosplay#?#well eventually maybe#sewing#handmade#â¨fashionâ¨

Since I just saw a post on the same blog about countering the spread of misinformation using the SIFT method I'm going to apply it here.
Stop
Is this post provoking an emotional response? Yes
Is it trying to? Also yes.
What do I already know about the source? Twitter screenshots on Tumblr are unreliable. I know nothing about the linked pmc19.com but it doesn't look like a government or university website url.
Investigate (The Source)
What can you find about the author/website creators?
the link to pmc19.com/data resolves, and that website does seem to be the source of these claims, although the current numbers are slightly off those reported in the tweets, likely because we're a week later.
pmc19.com links to a PDF with "Background on Dr. Hoerger and the PMC". There they discuss how Dr. Hoerger (who claims copyright of the webpage at the bottom) is trained in clinical psychology, has taught and was doing an MBA in 2019 on strategic management. It claims he's "an expert in personality, emotions, and affective decision science..." and mentions he did a masters degree wich involved a lot of stuff... And also epidemiology.
The PMC is apparently "The Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative" with unnamed members who have " led many projects to keep people safer during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic." and "The PMC dashboard is cited in grant applications, including at least two grants already funded. It has been cited by trusted organizations like the Peopleâs CDC, news outlets, and scientific journals, including several papers published in JAMA journals."
Which really sounds like they think I should trust them at least as much as I trust people who write grants, and/or "The People's CDC" -- this makes me think they are unlikely to be an accurate source.
Here's Dr. Hoerger's bio at Louisiana Cancer research center:
https://www.louisianacancercenter.org/people/michael-hoerger-phd
It says "Dr. Hoerger conducts psychosocial research to reduce the emotional and physical burden of serious illnesses. Dr. Hoerger is an international expert in psychosocial oncology as well as pandemic mitigation." And the lists a bunch of psychology stuff. Literally never mentions pandemics again. If he's an "international expert in pandemic mitigation" a) I'd expect him to work somewhere other than a Cancer center b) I'd expect his bio to mention his pandemic mitigation work. Maybe he's new to all this pandemic stuff? He certainly doesn't claim to be an epidemiologist on the pmc website, just to have worked on a project that involves it.
When I google "The Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative" the second result is this webpage which questions their methodology and suggests that their model is incapable of making accurate predictions -- claiming it's always going to be biased towards whatever happened on the same dates last year -- both low and high. (I'm summarizing and interpreting a huge amount here,so read it yourself, and the source is just a blog post so not intrinsically more credible...) But it is note worthy that the main 3rd party discussion of this organization is someone questioning the utility of their predictions.
https://buttondown.com/abbycartus/archive/we-need-to-talk-about-the-pandemic-mitigation/
What is their mission? Do they have vested interests? Would their assessment be biased?
Their mission seems to be to "track" or predict cases of covid -- but like better than the real CDC and epidemiologists. Presumably this is born out of concern for immunocompromised individuals, or boredom, or needing a project for a Strategic Management MBA, or distrust of Official Sources.
They appear to have a vested interest in pandemic mitigation, and therefore alarmism and possibly in not agreeing with official sources. Their assessment may well be biased!
Do they have authority in the Area?
No. They mention precisely 0 epidemiologists working for or with them. I don't see a reason to trust their models more than my physics grad student friends who made pandemic models on a lark in 2020.
Find Better Coverage
The official CDC (Centers for Disease Control) webpage on Covid data is here:
https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#datatracker-home
It indicates lower numbers than last year for everything they track, numbers that are kind of ticking up in recent weeks, but numbers that are forecast (if I'm reading that right) to reach a smaller peak than in prior years.
Notably the CDC is not making any directly comparable claims about number of people infected or infectious. Or how many might be infected next month. I believe this is because these are fundamentally unknowable from the data they have, and that speculating on them would be irresponsible for public communicators of science. Sure, one could create models that predict those numbers, but publishing the results to the public without context on the uncertainties of the models would be irresponsible since people might make life or death decisions like wearing a mask or getting a vaccine based on those bad predictions. Or they might just rage at people online who disagree with them. Idk, I'm not a science communicator.
Don't trust the CDC? Tough. The New York Times ended their own covid tracking in 2023 saying:
After more than three years of daily reporting of coronavirus data in the United States, The New York Times is ending its Covid-19 data-gathering operation. The Times will continue to publish virus data from the federal government weekly on a new set of tracking pages, but this page will no longer be updated.
This change was spurred by the declining availability of virus data from state and local health officials. Since few states report more than once a week (and some no longer report data to the public at all), the weekly data reports from the C.D.C. have become the most reliable source of information on the virusâs spread.
There new webpage is here and it was last updated in March 2024, it says:
These Covid tracking pages are no longer being updated. Get the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control, or find archived data from The Timesâs three year reporting effort here.
John's Hopkins University has this to say:
On March 10, 2023, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center ceased collecting and reporting of global COVID-19 data. For updated cases, deaths, and vaccine data please visit the following sources: Global: World Health Organization (WHO) U.S.: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
So yeah, reputable sources have stopped caring and link you to the CDC as the place to get your info.
Trace Claims, Quotes, and Media to their Original Context
The pmc19.com website does appear to be the original context for these claims. Thank you OP for linking that.
My Verdict:
These claims are misinformation. Specifically they claim numbers that are based on a model that was not created by subject matter experts, that disagrees with the trends reported by the CDC and it's epidemiologists. Either government employed epidemiologists are wrong and no university epidemiologists want to call them out on it... Or the PMC is wrong. Since they aren't epidemiologists... They're probably wrong. Moreover: If you don't trust the CDC you shouldn't The PMC because in their technical apendix they claim to use CDC data to make their projections. The only way the PMC could be right is if all other epidemiologists are wrong about the COVID pandemic and how to interpret wastewater and hospitalization data.
The PMC and Dr. Hoerger are engaging in academic sounding BS. They have incentives to be alarmist and fear monger, and don't seem to care or understand that they're using a model that probably doesn't have predictive value.
Data source: https://pmc19.com/data/
#misinformation#Covid-19#the actual pandemic is misinformation#because it sure as shit isn't covid right now#assuming you trust literally any way of measuring that#you are not immune to propaganda#I appreciate that it is pro-masking propaganda#but it also erodes trust in government#and institutions#and makes people live in parallel realities where they're easier to manipulate#covid misinformation#pandemic misinformation#covid#the pandemic#how to investigate misinformation#Am I really qualified to analyze the accuracy of their model#let's be honest: no#however: anyone can recognize that their past predictions do not line up with other CDC data#so one must be inaccurate#and the criticisms of their model sound right to me#and their description of their model makes it sound like the criticism is correct#they say their weighting the events of past years into their prediction#and there are reasons to suspect that is going to give fucked up predictions#like I would expect that to work well for repeating periodic signals#an assumption that I think it is bad to make about diseases!#there's actually an article in The Atlantic that cites this guy and epidemiologists and the epidemiologists basically say:#'we should expect waves at different times than in prior years'#so... lots of reasons to doubt the PMC model

Okay, me and @buckgettingstruck have been going back and forth since yesterday and we have reached enlightenment about bucktommy, and I'm here to share. This isn't an anti post btw, this is us trying to make sense of the relationship in the context of the show.
But imagine you're Tommy. Youâve been closeted for most of your life and you recently came out (yeah, recently, six years is not that long). You left your fiance and decided to come out, but since then most of your relationships â friends and otherwise â have been shallow. For some reason, you don't know how to turn off the instinct to keep people at arm's length.
Suddenly youâre helping your old coworkers rescue your former captain and his wife, and in come Eddie and Buck.Â
You hit it off with Eddie. Heâs very friendly and you have a lot in common, so you're hanging out with him and trying to get a feel for him. Maybe heâs into guys. Hanging out with him is fun, even if you still canât find any actual reason to open up to him about your life. You go to fights, you practice Muay Thai, you play basketball. You have fun.Â
And then thereâs his crazy ass best friend â Buck.Â
Buck is spinning out about the two of you hanging out for a few weeks for some reason. You kinda assume thereâs something going on with him and Eddie and you try to apologize to the guy. Buck tells you that it's not because heâs jealous of Eddie, itâs because he wants your attention. It throws you for a loop (my attention? You two havenât really talked since he asked for a tour around Harbor), but your interest is piqued. The guy is hot, and heâs cute in a rambly way so you decide to go for it and it works out in your favor. But in the back of your mind, you know that this dude has some very intense relationship going on with his best friend. You had to bring up Eddieâs kid to get him to warm up to you, after all. But for all you know Eddie is straight, and Buck says he wants your attention. You donât want anything that serious â breaking off the first engagement was hard enough â and you donât really have anything to lose by just seeing where this goes. Youâve only been out for six years, so you want to explore. Maybe this could be fun.Â
The first date is a bit of a trainwreck, and the dude turns out to be too intense. Somehow Eddie showed up with that girlfriend of his heâs never really talked about, and Buck is spinning out. You decide to cut your losses and go home â even if leaving Buck on the curb was a bit of a dick move. But Buck calls you a few days later. You meet for coffee. He tells you he doesnât know what he wants, but he wants to try with you. He invites you to Chimneyâs bachelor party and his wedding to Buckâs sister as a nice gesture and you figure, what the hell? Why not? Maybe itâs a little much, but heâs trying.Â
In your head, you're in a fun, casual relationship because you haven't had the conversation about it being serious. Since Buck doesnât bring it up or ask you for very much at all, you believe he is on the same page. You keep him at armâs length so it stays that way â when he talks about almost losing Bobby, the whole Gerrard mess. Itâs subconscious, you think, but keep it light and surface level. You don't want something that deep, and he is following your lead. You maybe see each other once a week, considering you both work 24-hour shifts and have chaotic schedules. You go to dinner, you go to the movies, and maybe you make out a little. It's easy and it's fun, and you can stay that way as long as the Buck doesn't push you further. Itâs been almost six months now, and beyond venting about Gerrard a few times, he hasnât even nudged.Â
Itâs a little weird, though, how Eddieâs always there. And you really like Eddie, honestly, but heâs constantly around. Sometimes it feels like youâre the third wheel here. Heâs already there when you arrive for Chimneyâs bachelor party, dressed in a suit to match Buckâs and helping set up. Suddenly a few months later youâre being invited to Chrisâs Zoom birthday party, where Buck looks just as defeated taking the decorations down as the kidâs father. Buck dislocates his shoulder â you didnât ask why, and he didnât volunteer the information â and Eddie is there tucked into the guest chair with a magazine and the shitty hospital coffee, asking about Buckâs recovery and return to work. You do get to stay with him overnight, on his uncomfortable couch and falling asleep as he talks on and on about the corpse he accidentally rented (and alright, why did Buck get mad at him for laughing and not Eddie?). When Buck wakes up with boils the next day itâs not even a question for him to call Eddie. Eddie talks him down a lot better than you could, even if the situation is a bit ridiculous. You donât miss the way he snaps at you for calling him gross â mentioning your cousin gets shingles is apparently a crime â while he tells Eddie to call his appearance what it is and heâll believe itâs stress if he says so. But hey, getting boils kinda sucks, and Buck is having a rough go lately, so you move past it. But you donât miss how Eddie seems to sense that Buckâs picking at his face without looking up from his phone when youâre at the hospital a couple days later because of Henâs kid. You donât miss how everyone else gets the good news that heâs going to make it through. Everyone except for you.Â
You kinda want what Buck has, if youâre being honest. He found a family at the 118, with really intense people on his six, and youâre hoping that when the relationship runs its course you can stay friends. Maybe you can still keep part of that. Maybe thatâs still within reach, even if Buck wonât even show you the text everyone else got.Â
Buck goes from zero to a million after that, because he finds out he dated your ex-fiance and his next course of action is to thank you for gay rights and ask you to move in with him.
Up to this point, you thought you were on the same page â light, casual, fun. He didnât push, but then he shoved you both off a bridge and now you can't ignore the thing that's been in the back of your mind for the last six months.Â
Honestly, you have no idea whatâs going on with Eddie. The mustache is a choice, and he was doing some funny things with that ring pop back at the hospital, but for all you know, heâs a zero on the Kinsey scale. You know Buck has something going on beneath the surface with how he feels about Eddie, whether he realizes it or not. You knew there was an expiration date on this thing when you started, and you didnât even mind. You kept it fun and light over the past six months. You kept your distance â maybe a bit too much, considering Abby never came up until now. You hoped maybe youâd get to keep some decent friends once Buck figured his shit out. You knew, even if you tried to ignore it. You tried to enjoy it while it lasted.Â
You tried to convince yourself it wasnât there for a while. Buck, as far as he knew, still knew, was telling the truth. He wanted your attention, your time, you. Heâs still figuring everything out, and you thought maybe you had more time. Keeping it casual and slow could only go so far, in the end.Â
Buck nudges once, pushes you to consider what it would be like to be in a relationship with him that's serious. Heâs talking about living together and youâre panicking a little bit as a thousand scenarios run through your brain, but you canât see an ending that's not him realizing he has feelings for someone else and leaving you. Another six months, a year, five years â it's all the same.Â
You didnât want to get hurt in this situation, but you will be if you stay. Youâve already hurt people by denying the truth before.
So you tell him â I know how this ends.
You didnât want to. You never really planned on ending it because you figured he would, but you reached the point where you can't come back. He wants more, and you know that would just end in smoke. Not for him, but for you.Â
So you have to break this guyâs heart. And you know if you break this guyâs heart, youâre going to become the villain. You lose the entrance to a family you wanted to be a part of. You lose the friendship you had with Eddie, who is just as goddamn weird and crazy about Buck as Buck is about him. You lose the potential friendship in Buck, in them both, in everyone. Thereâs only one way out of here now.Â
Buckâs somehow still endearing as you end things. You try to nudge him for once, talking about firsts and lasts. He doesnât get it. You throw in some line a parking spot because the second reserved one Buck got with his loft went to Eddie years ago. You step into the hall, out of Eddieâs shadow, and walk away with nothing.

okay so as a camp counsellor specifically for 10-14 year olds i feel qualified to make this post
Damian: Drake, you are currently displaying what my peers would refer to as 'Ohio' behaviour
Tim: [Chokes on his coffee] Damian is isn't even 7am yet
Damian: Father asked me to attempt to connect with my peers. Is analyzing their language usage not an example of this?
Steph: [enjoying the chaos] Yeah Tim, what the sigma?
Tim: One of these days, I'm going to have that supervillain arc Dick keeps warning you all about.

gonna be a bit nitpicky about the last reblog above, but what is tumblr for if not discussions, so...! i feel like many forget to take into account that airplane didn't originally set up binghe as a stallion protagonist of any kind - in fact, in the original outline, luo binghe never had any romantic interests at all, which is a VERY interesting tidbit that i wish more people would remember, because what the hell was the original outline is something that keeps me up at night.
THAT BEING SAID: personally, i do like to go with the interpretation that airplane was fully aware of his own sexuality, because it kind of makes the whole pidw-as-a-stallion-novel thing more tragic given luo binghe is... well, kind of airplane's self insert in many ways. and, honestly, he probably created the commentary aspect of it that is so clear to us as the readers unintentionally - at least at first; honestly he might have leaned into the irony of it all later imo, given his own seeming awareness of how utterly sad everything he writes is (because let's all face it as a community - given what we know of the original draft, airplane shooting towards the sky was a pure whump writer before he got forced into writing bad het porn for money. this is fascinating to me for other reasons, but i've already gone way off topic for this post, so uhm. another time on that maybe).
also, on the original post- i personally see binghe in general as pansexual-but-severely-demiromantic adjacent, given that, like.... i really don't think one could have sex with That Many Women without feeling something, and i also feel like it would be kind of dishonest to completely disregard him being anything but gay-or-straight when he did, in fact, in the end sleep with all those women and marry them. i do still think airplane's gay though, actually, because binghe's eventual sexuality meta-reflecting airplane's need-money-to-survive based writing decisions is deeply interesting to me- but all this leads back to the demiromanticism that op has already mentioned, in that it's likely bingge never formed a deep enough connection with anyone to truly fall in love the same way binghe had a shot to in his own life. (i'm honestly also of the take that bingge doesn't actually fall in love with shen qingqiu in the bingge vs bingmei extra, but AGAIN that would be material for an orginal post and not a reblog that's already full of me yapping for far too long.) so. yeah, he's just really fucking sad in any universe huh
you know I am willing to give luo binghe massive amounts of shit for being totally deranged because he is such a dick but also like, his very favorite person in the world did open their relationship by abusing him for actual years and then just turn on a dime and start spoiling him
and since he never got an explanation for any of that, even before he got thrown off a cliff into hell he had to choose between rejecting one of three positive personal relationships he'd experienced in his entire life (and the only one where he was getting as much support as he needed) or structuring his understanding of personal interaction so that history was actually cool and okay somehow, and like
literally anyone in that situation would have come out with some fucked-up norms about relationships and boundaries. i can only blame him so much for not knowing where lines ought to happen! his dataset is fucked.

Thanos x American!reader
a/n: hi my babies! so this is my first thanos (choi su-bong) fic i'm posting. however, i kind of wrote this as an aftermath of a little series i've been working on of them in the games. so, once i am done hating it and editing it, i will posit it! but i hope you guys enjoy this cute lil fluff. i suck at writing fluff tbh but i tried! xx also, t.o.p is my gwiyomiii, my honeyyyy, my angel babyyyyyyyyy! i'm so inlove with him so feel free to send requests!
synopsis: nightmares of the games still haunt Thanos a year later, but luckily Y/n will never leave his side.
warnings: language, fluff, very brief mention of sex if you squint
wc: 1.1k+
You couldnât sleep. Insomnia had wrapped itself around your mind ever since surviving the games last year, a constant shadow in your otherwise bright new life. You had so much to be grateful forâmaking it out alive, the money that had saved you in more ways than one, and, of course, Su-Bong. Though, to this day, you still called him T. Your T.
Never in a million years would you have imagined living in a sleek penthouse in downtown Seoul with a man you fell in love with while playing deadly childrenâs games. Yet here you were, in a world that once seemed as unreachable as a dream: Thanosâ World. And you loved it.
The games had changed Thanos in ways you never thought possible. He quit the drugs, buried his oversized ego, and spent six months holed up in his apartment with only you for company. It was a metamorphosis you never expected but cherished deeply. When he finally emerged from that cocoon of self-reflection, he returned to musicâhis first true love. But this time, it wasnât about sex, drugs, and wealth. His lyrics delved into the rawness of his childhood, the pain of his struggles, the weight of his dreamsâand you. Always you. You were his muse.
Being with the Thanos, however, was far from simple. Going out with him was an ordeal, a gamble. Fans flocked to him wherever he went, now more than ever, since heâd announced his new album. He once thrived on the chaos, basking in the adoration of women throwing themselves at him and men idolizing him. He was a star, and he reveled in the glow. But now? Now the attention suffocated him. He avoided crowded places as much as he could, especially when you were by his side.
It wasnât that he didnât want to show you offâGod, he did. But the fear gnawed at him. What if something happened to you? What if someone hurt you? Youâd already faced your fair share of vitriol when the media leaked that Thanos was dating some American girl. âAmerican bitch,â theyâd called you, throwing their venom your way in tabloids and comment sections. But the hate didnât break you. If anything, it hardened your resolve.
You refused to let him hide away forever. When his anxiety tried to keep him tethered to the penthouse, you were the one who dragged him out into the world. You reminded him of what life outside these walls could offer, even if it wasnât always kind. And slowly, piece by piece, you were helping him reclaim it.
You glanced over at Thanos, his peaceful face softened by sleep, his arm draped lazily over your bare thighs. Carefully, you lifted his arm and slipped out of bed, moving quietly so as not to disturb him. Padding toward the kitchen, you glanced at the clock: 2:30 a.m. Another sleepless night. You sighed, the weight of endless insomnia pressing down on you.
You set the kettle to boil, deciding tea wouldnât cut it tonight. The staleness of the room felt suffocating. What you needed was air. Before stepping out to the balcony, you peeked into the bedroom again, reassured by the steady rise and fall of Thanosâ chest.
The view of Seoul stretched before you as you stepped outside. The city pulsed with quiet energy, its lights casting a warm glow against the dark sky. The faint scent of cherry blossoms drifted through the breeze, mingling with the night air and brushing your hair across your face. This view, this lifeâit was something youâd never take for granted.
Pulling out your phone, you typed a quick message to Se-mi.
y/n: You up?
Minutes passed before your phone buzzed with a reply.
Se-mi: Yeah. Canât sleep?
y/n: The insomnia is never-ending.
Se-mi: I miss when we all lived together.
Your lips curved into a bittersweet smile. Memories of those first fragile weeks after escaping the games flooded your mind. The four of youâThanos, Se-mi, Min-su, and youâcrammed into your tiny apartment, clinging to each other for sanity. For weeks, you barely left the safety of those walls. Eventually, Thanos invited everyone to move in with him, but Se-mi and Min-su had decided it was time to go back to their families. The games had taught them how precious life was. That, and your shared space wasnât exactly conducive to privacyâespecially with how loud things could get between you and Thanos when you couldnât keep your hands off of eachother.
y/n: I miss it too. I miss you. Shopping tomorrow?
Se-mi: You know I hate shopping.
y/n: But you love me, and T gave me his black card.
Se-mi: Spoiled brat.
y/n: See you tomorrow đĽ°
Se-mi: Canât wait âđź
You smiled at her response, warmth spreading through you at the thought of reconnecting with your best friend. But the moment of peace was shattered by a sound from insideâfaint whimpers carried through the air. Your heart clenched. Setting your tea down, you hurried back to the bedroom.
âT?â you called softly as you stepped inside.
No response. Only the faint cries that sent chills down your spine. You rushed to the bedside table and flicked on the lamp. Thanos was thrashing slightly, tears streaming down his cheeks, his hands grasping desperately at the empty space where you should have been.
âFuck! NO!â he suddenly screamed, his voice hoarse with panic.
âT!â you gasped, climbing onto the bed and pulling him into your arms. âT, babyâŚâ you murmured, your voice gentle but firm. âIâm here. Iâm right here.â
His hand found your shirt, bunching the fabric in his fist as though clinging to reality. He fought against the demons clawing at him, his breaths ragged and uneven. Finally, his eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused at first, until they locked onto yours. His lip quivered as shame filled his expression.
âHi, baby,â you whispered, brushing your thumb tenderly across his cheek to wipe away the tears. âYouâre okay. Iâm here.â
âFuckâŚâ he sighed, his voice trembling as he buried his face in your shirt. His shame was palpable, but you held him tightly, cradling him as though the weight of his nightmares could be eased by your embrace.
âAnother nightmare?â you asked softly. He nodded wordlessly, slipping his hand into yours. He hated these moments. Hated the way his past still haunted him, dragging you into his darkness. But you didnât mind. Youâd made a decision long ago: this man was worth every struggle, every sleepless night. Some may say a few days isnât enough time to know who is your person, but when your life is on the line, time has a way of fast-tracking love.
âMâsorryâŚâ he mumbled, his voice muffled against your chest.
âYou have nothing to be sorry for, T,â you reassured him, your fingers running soothingly through his hair. âYou know Iâll always be right here.â
âPromise?â His voice was barely above a whisper, raw and vulnerable.
You kissed his forehead, tightening your arms around him. âPromise,â you said, and you meant it with every fiber of your being.

you catch yourself dozing off and jerk your head up instinctively. one short, loud snore passes your lips as you do so, eyes opening wide. you blink your tired eyes a few times as you readjust to the harsh lighting.
ugh, you fell asleep in the lab, something you always chastise peter and your dad for doing. they're notorious for their long hours spent messing around with stark tech. you've lost count of how many times you've woken up to an empty spot in bed where your boyfriend should be, instead finding him fast asleep surrounded by cups of coffee and a delirious tony still on the grind.
tonight, you're the stark who's in the lab past their bedtime. you had the day to yourself and decided to use your free time to upgrade your suit. it had had a few hiccups during the team's last mission, so you wanted to work on it before the next one. what was supposed to be a few minor tweaks turned into a whole day of tweaking.
you scoff at yourself and wipe some drool that crusted onto your chin. oddly enough, you almost instantly refocus on the screen in front of you. it's been like this for most of the day. you're way more concentrated than usual for some reason, more aware. you figure it's because peter has been out on patrol and couldn't distract you.
"are you finished for the night, boss? you aren't usually here this late."
"i know, but iâm gonna stay a little longer. iâll be done soon...i think."
friday dims the lights directly overhead so they aren't as harsh. you smile.
"thanks, fri."
you sit up in your seat, scooting in closer to the screen displaying your suit. you carefully look over the prototype and pick up a pen to write yourself some notes. when you go to put down the pen, it sticks to your palm. you shake your hand to try to get it off. it stays stuck.
"huh."
you use your other hand to pry the pen off of you.
"weird."
first you have heightened senses, now you're sticky. if you didn't have ordinary stark dna, you'd think you were part arachnid like peter.
you're not sure why, but you suddenly stand up and turn towards the main doors to the lab. they slide open a few seconds later. peter walks inside, spider suit on and mask off. he pads over to you with a soft smile.
"there you are. friday said i could find you down here."
peter pecks your lips and envelopes you in a hug. you sign contentedly, face nuzzled into his neck and arms winding around him.
"yeah, she's probably sick of me. i've been down here all day."
"you're really locked in, huh? how's the suit coming along?"
peter's fingers rub up and down your back ever so lightly. just the small touch practically sends shivers down your spine.
"good. fixed everything and double checked, then triple checked. started adding some new stuff, too."
"new features? like what?"
"you know the one i was telling you about..."
you trail off as peter's hands slide down to your ass. he pulls you in closer to himself, letting his hands rest there. you peek up at him, heart speeding up.
"go on, iâm listening."
peter gives your ass a gentle squeeze. it's an innocent gesture, really, but your senses are going crazy right now and you can't help but to get turned on. you always tease peter about how easily he's turned on. if this is what it feels like for him, now you understand.
"hm, i'm bored of talking about the suit. tell me about patrol."
"it was good! got a lot of action today. i mean, i guess that's not good 'cause that means there's more crime and stuff, but y'know. anyway..."
you stare at peter's lips, but don't listen to a word he's saying. it's the first time today you can't focus. he's pressed right up against you in his damned tight spider suit, and his hands are still on your ass, and you're so hypersensitive and hyper aware. all you can think about is how bad you need him.
"y/n? you okay?"
peter must have noticed you spacing out.
your gaze flicks between his eyes and lips before your own lips wordlessly capture his in a searing kiss. peter lets out a breathy chuckle, caught a bit off guard by your abruptness. he deepens the kiss for a moment, then pulls back with a look of amusement. you bite back a cheeky smile.
"horny."
peter's features form a smirk.
"i got you, baby."
he kisses you again. his tongue tangles with yours, a sigh passing your lips. peter lifts you up, grip becoming firmer on your ass. you wrap your legs around his waist. he kisses down your neck until he finds a spot he wants to mark. you tilt your head to the side so he has more access. peter's lips suck roughly on your skin, teeth nipping at it playfully. you let out a shaky breath.
peter presses one last kiss to what's sure to become a hickey to soothe it. you tilt his chin up towards you again, lips smashing into his, holding him in place by the back of his head. he carries you to the nearest table while your intertwined lips move desperately against each other's. you sneak a hand down to the bulge in his suit, earning a groan.
"one sec, lemme get this off."
peter sets you down on the table and quickly strips off his spider suit. you take your own clothes off and toss them aside, left only in your bra and panties. peter comes to stand between your legs. he slips your panties to the side, middle finger collecting your wetness as he kisses you again. his finger slides into you with ease and begins to pump. you moan into the kiss, tugging at his hair.
"already so wet, baby. don't even have to get you warmed up."
peter's finger curls inside you, cockiness evident in his tone and on his features. you tug on some hair at the nape of his neck.
"stop teasing, parker."
"can't take it when the roles are reversed, stark?"
something takes over you in that moment, the same something that's been coursing through your veins all day. you grab both of peter's hands and hold them in place above his head. your grip is tight around his wrists, too tight for him to break free of it. a noise almost like a growl escapes you.
"shut up and fuck me, or iâll fuck you."
peter meets your wild eyes, his pupils equally as dilated.
"do it."
you promptly pull peter up to the table with you. you push him back so he lies down, pinning his arms down at his sides. his chest rises and falls, breathless.
"woah, what's gotten into you today? not that iâm complaining, but, woah."
"i know, right? i thought you were supposed to have super strength."
peter grabs you by your hips and sits up, seating you in his lap. you wiggle your hips in his grasp, but he digs his fingers into your sides so you can't move. peter's voice drops low.
"what was that?"
you breathe out a low laugh.
"nothing."
you dip your head down to press your forehead to peter's. he smiles, satisfied with your answer. you wrap your hand around his hard cock and stroke him. peter's lips ghost over yours, his breathing heavy.
"wanna feel you, y/n/n."
peter slides his hands up to your waist so you can move again. you smile knowingly. you slip off your panties before you reposition yourself, your legs on either side of him. you line up peter's cock with your entrance.
"wanna feel you too, pete."
you lower yourself down onto peter. you both let out little sighs and moans as he fills you up.
he always feels so good inside you, but this time is even better, even more intense.
you arch your back to find the right angle, shifting backwards a bit. once you're both comfortable, you begin to roll your hips. peter exhales a breath he was holding, lifting his hips up to help you out. your movements are slow, fluid. peter supports you by the small of your back, eyes hooded and lips parted for air.
"fuck, i'm not gonna last long."
"me neither."
he kisses you, softly but with so much passion. you let your eyes flutter closed and kiss back. you place your feet flat on the table for more stability and straighten your back, starting to bounce on his cock.
"y/n..."
peter's voice comes out almost like a whine. you chuckle at that.
"i know."
you grab onto peter's shoulders for more support as you move, up and down, back and forth. peter leaves sloppy kisses along the side of your neck. the once quiet lab is now filled with both of your moans and the sounds of your wetness every time his cock thrusts into you. you're both so close, and you can hardly hold out any longer.
peter grabs your hips to stop your movements. he takes over, thrusting up into you at the same delicious pace, only he's the one in control. you let out a series of short, high pitched moans, head thrown back as peter's cock hits the right spot in you over and over again.
"that's it, y/n/n. sound so pretty, baby."
peter half speaks and half groans. you reply with your own noise of content, squeezing yourself around his cock as you reach your high. peter is close to his.
"god, fuck."
he's panting. his thrusts speed up a bit until his hips stop moving altogether. he pushes deeper into you with one final moan, his cum filling you up, making you feel warm inside. you both recently agreed he could finish in you; it's a new level of intimacy.
"fuck, baby. woah."
you bury your face in peter's neck in response. you try to catch your breath, falling forward into his arms.
"oh my god, pete. that was..."
"yeah."
peter hugs your waist. he slowly pulls out of you, making you wince at the new emptiness.
"sorry."
he peppers tender kisses to the side of your head. you remove your face from his neck.
"it's okay."
you ruffle peter's hair with a tired smile. he kisses your cheek, smiling back. you give him another peck on his lips. you yawn, today's and tonight's activities catching up with you once again.
"aw, you tired?"
"mhm. you must be, too, spidey."
"exhausted. let's get cleaned up, then we'll go to bed?"
"sounds perfect."
peter helps you down from the table. you quickly step into your panties in case any cum leaks out of you. he picks his suit up off the floor.
"okay, that was insanely good. i mean, it always is, but something was different. i wonder what it was."
peter shimmies into his suit so his lower half is covered. you're putting on the rest of your clothes.
"i don't know, iâve just been super on my shit today. really focused and stuff."
"explains why you were so locked in on your suit."
"that might just be a stark thing. actually, it's a parker thing too."
you poke peter's chest playfully. you collect some of your things from your work area, some miscellaneous supplies sticking to your palms as you do.
"why does this keep happening?"
peter watches curiously as you huff and shake paper clips off your palms.
"funny, that reminds me of when i first got my powers. took me a while to figure out how to control it, being sticky."
"uh huh. did you spill web fluid last time you were down here or something?"
"i don't think so, but it would have dissolved by now if i did. i haven't been in the lab for a couple days."
"oh. maybe it was someone else."
peter quirks a brow.
"i don't see any web fluid over there, y/n/n."
you turn to face peter.
"so why am i sticky?"
between this, your strength, and your heightened senses, peter puts it together. you have powers.
his spider powers.
"that might also be a parker thing. more specifically, a spider-man thing."
"you don't mean... no."
if peter is saying what you think he's saying, that confirms what you had thought earlier.
"uh, yeah."
peter crosses over to you. your eyebrows knit together.
"we must share some dna."
"but how? that wouldn't be possible unless we were, like, related... ew! please don't tell me we're fucking related!"
"baby, baby." peter laughs softly, taking one of your hands in his. "stop freaking out."
"you should be freaking out too! you were just inside me, peter, fucking me raw! you came in me!"
"exactly."
peter's voice is way too calm for your liking.
"exactly? what do you mean 'exactly'?"
"think about it. sperm is made up of dna."
"so what?"
"well, i wasn't born with this dna. it got mutated by the spider bite. so no, we're definitely not related."
you tentatively soften your gaze, allowing peter to lace his fingers through yours.
"since i got my powers from the mutation, i guess you got them too when i started finishing in you."
you gasp, a playful smile pulling at your lips.
"you mean you mutated my dna? you have radioactive cum?"
"something like that. you're not mad?"
you toy with peter's fingers, looping an arm around his neck.
"nah, it's kind of cool now that i know what it is. you're gonna have to teach me how to use the powers, though."
"of course." peter returns your smile. "now that you've got new powers, you gotta rebrand. maybe you could call yourself spider-woman."
"you'd like that, wouldn't you? come up with something more original."
peter's arms wrap around your middle, smile growing into a toothy grin.
"you could also use mrs. parker. it's gonna be your name someday, anyways."
you put your other arm around peter's neck with a laugh.
"mrs. parker, i like that."

Omg really? Wow, thank you so much. That's honestly amazing to me, considering this was one of the hardest for me to write in Smoke Eater. đ
(But after reading your wonderful review, thank you for making me cry. đĽšđđ)
First of all, please don't apologize for the heartfelt thoughts you want to share with me. No matter how long or short, I love hearing what you think about my writing, and this is genuinely one of the best reviews I've ever received, because I can tell it came from the heart.
What's crazy is my mom and I also used to watch Chicago Fire together when she was trying to recover from surgery (where she had terrible complications and wasn't well for a long time). It became her comfort show, and I was happy to introduce it to her/have that bonding time where it kept her from thinking about her pain. But I'm so glad you thought to come here to perk yourself up after a rewatch.
honestly I have so many thoughts for each wonderful chapter but I would feel super guilty for spamming :â) this chapter in particular though, hits me harder than anything iâve ever read before â not in a bad way!đ¤
lol girl that's the best kind of spamming. I'd never be upset with that! đ Oh good, I'm glad it doesn't hit in a bad way. I was concerned about that for readers when I was first posting this part of the story. đ
my mom had epilepsy, and I was her caretaker pretty much my entire life. I connect so much with this story because it, feels like iâm reading a mirror, if that makes any sense at all. with all the doctors and the worrying, itâs written so authentically, which is understandable after reading your authorâs note. iâm so sorry youâve experienced such difficult hardships and losses yourself honey, I offer my sincere condolences. and iâm sending you the biggest hugs đŤđ¤đ¤
I'm sending you the biggest hugs right back, friend. I'm so sorry about what your mom went through, and what you went through too. Being a caretaker is not easy. I've seen it enough in my family that that's what I drew from in order to write this, so I'm glad it felt authentic to your experience. đŤđ
now these lines/parts specifically had me crying like a baby lol. december of 2021, my mom had to have surgery at the start of the month. her recovery was going a little slow, but well. however she passed away overnight, 2 days after christmas, completely unexpected. the day before she had been doing so well tooâ she had more energy and was more mobile without needing as much assistance. came to find out later thatâs something nurses call a surge? :/ either way, those moments in particular really tugged at my heartstrings â¤ď¸âđŠš
I'm so sorry for your loss, my friend. It is blind sighting when it comes so unexpected like that. I haven't shared this publicly, but something similar happened with my grandfather this past December. His health declined suddenly, to the point we had to take him to the hospital. After seeming to get better after a few days, he went downhill even harder, and he passed away in mid-December. It's not the same thing as your situation, but I understand the feeling of "why did this happen like this?" But now he's at peace with my grandma. And your mom is free from her pain and discomfort too. â¤ď¸âđŠšâ¤ď¸âđŠš
this line too. I felt this way for so long after my mom died. I didnât get the final cause for a while since she passed at home and not at a hospital, and to this day I wish I could go back. wish I couldâve done something different. but SUDEP (or, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy) is completely unpreventable so far. I just find it so cruel that this illness I spent my whole life helping her with, ended up taking her anyway and nothing I did mattered in the end. so reading that line, how she broke down, and everything she had been holding in, it really made my heart ache but I also felt less alone in a way.
And I'm sure you did everything you possibly could, just like the reader in this story. đ I didn't know about SUDEP, but I have a family member who takes medication for his epilepsy, so I'm going to be reading up on that. I'm so glad that this simple line made you feel less alone in any small way -- I also thought when I was writing that it not only fit what the character was going through, but that other people who've been caretakers for a family member like this would be able to identify with this feeling as well.
everything that followed, itâs like reading a reflection. I shutdown and just went through the motions afterwards too, but ohhh how nice it wouldâve been to have a dean â¤ď¸ his support, how he takes care of her, itâs so heartwarming. and itâs really comforting to read. <3
It's that awful "autopilot" thing that somehow allows us to get through the aftermath, in a way, right? If only we could all have a Dean to support us in those moments. Somehow, reading hurt/comfort fics help me feel better too though. đđ
a lot of my family distanced themselves afterwards which, it is what it is. that being said, the sentiment in this story of family isnât always blood resonates with me a lot. my support system is really small, but they chose to be there for me unlike my blood relatives so, that theme in this story means so much â the way deanâs chosen family shows up for her as well, itâs so sweet. đ
Ugh really? I'm sorry to hear that. đđ But thank you for pointing that out -- that is the overarching theme of this story, a la SPN style. 𼚠Your chosen family can be just as powerful, if not more, than your blood family. And in this story, Dean's family is basically "adopting" the reader/you into it. đ
I guess the gist of what iâm trying to say, is I wholeheartedly adore this series and it truly means so much to me đ¤ I appreciate your work so much, and I love the unique feeling each piece of your writing brings đđ I know I may sound like a broken record but truly I donât think I can ever put into words how much I love your blog. you are an absolute sweetheart, truly a light peeking out between cloudy skies đ
Wow, I really did tear up of happiness. Thank you. đĽšđĽš I appreciate you right back for reading this story and connecting with it like you did. And I'm so glad that you enjoy my blog!! I've only been here on Tumblr for about 2 years actively, but connecting with people like you is what's keeping me here, and honestly gives me energy to write and express myself when I'm going through hard times.
This chapter specifically was very difficult for me to write for multiple reasons, as you saw in my AN, but again it makes me all the more grateful that this is the chapter you connect with the most. I'm very sorry for your loss though. I'm really touched that this story can give you some small comfort. đ
(And no it's not too much. Thank YOU for taking the time to share this with me.)

Part 11: âHeart of the Homeâ
You sat very still.
Your hands were gripped together in your lap when the doctor entered. He was tall and lean and blonde, and he wouldâve reminded you of your boss, except this man had a kinder face.
You were sitting on the edge of your grandfatherâs bed, hoping the doctor would say the bloodwork and scans came back fine. That they wouldnât need to admit George into the hospital for further testing. That he could go home in the morning.
But your life had never been quite that easy.
âOkay, George. Iâm sorry, but we need to admit you,â said the doctor.
He explained that while the malignant tumor of his cancer had been removed last year, the scans that had been done last month hadnât been able to detect the bright spots now formed on Georgeâs lungs and lymph nodes.
The oncologist would have to confirm, but you all knew where this was headed. Likely those âbright spotsâ were tumors.
George nodded slowly at first, taking it all in. He asked what his options were, as far as treatment.
âYour oncologist will go over those options with you,â the doctor replied. âWeâre going to move you up to Oncology shortly.â
George thanked him.
And you sat very still.Â
A hand fell on your arm, finally earning your gaze. Georgeâs face was oddly calm, though the worry in his eyes was for you. You realized that heâd gently called your name, though you hadnât heard him. Your ears were ringing.
His mouth parted to tell you something, but nothing came out. So instead, he tugged you into his arms, and he heaved a long sigh.
âI guess weâre here again,â he admitted. He let out a chuckle. âThe Lord does like his testsâŚbut maybe that car accident was a blessing in disguise, huh?â
You heard his voice, but your mind was buzzingâmainly with the doctorâs words, and with a bone-deep feeling that threatened to consume you.
Your car, your fault. Options, again. Here again.
Your fault.
When you didnât answer, George pulled away a bit to give you a questioning look.
âSweetheart?â he tried. You laid a hand on his arm.
âYou still havenât eaten dinner, have you?â you asked. Neither had you, for that matter. âIâll get us something that isnât rubbery turkey.â
George blinked at you, confused, with a growing edge of worry.
âIsnât Dean getting your meds? Why donât you wait for him toââ
âIâm fine,â you said, already getting up to grab your purse. âIâll be back.â
George called your name again, but the ringing in your ears was now pulsing in time with your heartbeat.
You made your way down the hall to the lobby at a brusque clip, even with your neck brace on. You didnât see Dean, but he certainly saw you as he was walking back into the hospital. Frowning, he followed and called out to you.
You slowed when you saw him, and he soon caught up with you. He rested a hand on your back.
âHey, where you goinâ?" he asked.
âWe havenât eaten in a while. Iâm going to the cafeteria,â you said. Though you seemed distracted, your eyes meeting his only briefly. It triggered a small spidey sense running up Deanâs spine.
He gave you your prescription pain medication, which you took with a small âthank you.â
âEverything okay?â he asked. âHowâs George doing?â
âFine. Heâs resting,â you said. And by the look of you, that seemed to be true. But he spotted the tremble in your hands when you took the pill bottle package from him. It made him stop you when you tried to keep walking down to the cafeteria.
âOkay, you wanna run that by me again?â Dean asked.
You frowned, and your brows knit together. âWhat?â
âIs there something going on?â he pressed.
You sighed, but you didnât answer him. You looked exhausted, and like youâd rather swallow your own tongue than speak. You shook your head and laid a hand on his wrist.
âIâm fine. Dean, thank you for everything you did tonight, but you still have to work tomorrow. Go home, get some rest,â you said.
You turned from him again. That was your first mistake. He reached out and grasped your hand to stop you.
âHey, wait a minute,â he said.
âWhat?â you said in irritation. Your second mistake was not being able to look at him.
Dean was frowning in earnest now. Worry clawed in his gut, which was also telling him not to let you walk away from him. His grip shifted to hold both of your arms and move directly in front of you. He dipped his chin, trying to get you to meet his eyes.
âCome on, sweetheart,â he said gently. âI need you to talk to me.â
You inhaled a shuddering breath. A wave was rising inside you, threatening to pull you into its undertow. Your eyes burned, red and shining. Dean finally saw it when you raised your head, what little you could. Your mouth began to quiver, looking into his eyes. And it was done.
You could no longer be still.
Dean held you when you fell apart in the hallway.
Dean called out of work the next day to stay with you and George. Gordon would be acting Lieutenant until his next shift, and Dean was sure the man would take full enjoyment out of it.
He couldnât care about that right now though. He felt that his place was here, being your quiet wall of support while you and George and the oncologist talked about treatment options.
âNormally, at the stage weâre in, I would be recommending chemotherapy,â said Dr. Benton.
âNormally?â you echoed.
âAt the rate this is progressing, the treatment would have to be aggressive,â he said. His gaze focused on George. âHowever, at your age, and the current state of your overall healthâŚat this point, I donât think the rigors of treatment would be worth diminishing your quality of life.â
âWhat are you saying?â you asked. Your voice cut like a whip, earning the other menâs gazes.
George was the first one to lay a hand on your arm. âYou know what it means, honeyâŚheâs saying it ainât worth it.â
âOf course, itâs worth it,â you retorted. With your brows furrowed and lips pursed, your eyes went from him to the doctor. âJust because heâs older, we shouldnât even try? Is that what youâre saying, doctor?â
At that, even Dean drew closer to lay a hand on your back. Meanwhile, George squeezed your arm.
Benton shook his head gravely. âThatâs certainly not what Iâm saying.â
âHow much time would I get, if I started treatment,â George asked, before you could volley further with the doctor.
Benton met the other manâs gaze.
âIâm going to be honest with you, George. You may get a few more weeks, or even a few months. But that is a best-case scenario.â
Dean drove you all home that day, after George decided to formally waive treatment. Both men knew you were angry in your silence, but neither one wanted to press you. Dean was too wary, and George was too tired.
Once he was settled in bed, you hadnât even left his room yet before you grabbed a notepad off his desk and wandered into the hall. You started to make a list of things you still needed from the grocery store, among other things. Dean took that piece of paper out of your hands.
âGood. Iâll handle this,â he said. âMeanwhile, you can get upstairs, take a shower, take your meds, and get some sleep.âÂ
You frowned at him. âYou havenât slept either, Dean.â
âIâm used to it,â he said, giving you a wink and a slight smile. Overnight shifts could be a bitch at a firehouse, but Dean was no stranger to having his sleep interrupted.
âListen to him, honey. Heâs speaking sense,â George called from inside his room. The bedroom door was still open. He was settling into his bed while trying to stifle a cough. He sipped at a cup of water youâd brought for him.
Still, you looked reluctant. Dean held your arms and pressed a kiss to your forehead.
âCome on,â he said. âYou were in an accident yesterday. Youâve had one hell of a night. You need your rest, or youâll be no good to anyone.â
And if you pushed yourself much more, he worried that heâd have to take you right back to the hospital. Dean would rather not have that scare so close to the last one.
He brushed your cheek with gentle fingers. With the limited mobility your neck brace provided, you did your best to look up at him. Your eyes were softer.
âOkay,â you breathed.
âOkay? All right, good,â Dean said. You held onto his jacket for a moment, leaning against him.
âThank you,â you whispered. You felt the burn of tears behind your closed eyelids. A few of them squeezed past and slipped down your cheeks. Dean held your face, brushing the tears away with his thumbs.
âHey, Iâm here, all right? Just let me help you,â he said. âYou can lean on me when you need to.â
âI havenât had that in a long time,â you admitted. âPart of me doesnât know how to lean.â
âI get that,â Dean said. But you both knew that there was a long and difficult road ahead. He knew he didnât have to remind you of it. âWhatever you need, you just tell me, okay? If nothing else, Iâve got a strong pair of shoulders.â
Somehow, you smiled. You pressed your forehead against his chest and inhaled deeply, to steady yourself.
âThat you do, Lieutenant.â
You left for your room soon after, but not before you brought him down to you for one more tearful kiss.
Dean then watched you climb up the stairs to your room and nearly went up to help you, but he heard George call his name. Dean ventured back into Georgeâs room and heeded his beckoning hand.
âYou hungry? I can scramble some eggs or something before I hit the store. I think I saw two more left in the carton,â Dean said. George shook his head.
âCome âere a sec.â
Dean took the hint and sat on the edge of the bed.
âI just wanna thank you for everything you did yesterday. Everything youâre still doing for us,â George said. He looked exhausted, but whatever he wanted to say was important enough to fight off sleep. He clasped a hand on Deanâs arm.
âYou donât have to,â Dean replied.
George huffed. A smile made his eyes gleam brighter.
âI knew you were a special one, Dean Winchester. Knew it the night I met ya, on your very first date with her.â
Dean blinked, but his pause drifted into a reserved smile.
âHowâs that?â he asked.
âWell, Iâll be honest. When I heard that black Chevy rumble like hellâs wheels onto the driveway, I thought I might have to worry about you,â George chuckled.
Deanâs lips quirked.
âBut no, it wasnât that. It wasnât the pretty flowers, or our mutual love of killer sharks,â George quipped, making Deanâs smile more genuine. âIt isnât your job either, or the fact that you saved her. I just believe that you can see a manâs mettle in his eyesâŚand I saw it in you when I shook your hand that night.â
Dean took that in for a moment. His hand flexed over his knee. Then he met Georgeâs gaze, though he didnât know what to say. Sometimes though, honestly was the best bet.
âIâm sorry for what youâre going through,â he said at last. âI canât imagineâŚâ
George let out a breath through his nose. âIâll tell you a secret.â
He pointed to a picture frame on his bedside. It was of him and his wife, Sophie, when they were around your age and Deanâs. The couple were sitting on a pier that hung over the edge of the lake in their hometown.
She held him from behind, with her arms wrapped around his neck. Her long hair was being carried by the wind, getting swept into Georgeâs eyes. He was smiling too hard to care.
âIâm ready to smile like that again,â he said. He had tears in his eyes, but he was already lighter at the thought. âI know itâs selfishâŚbut I think Iâve missed her long enough.â
Dean paused. Then he cleared his throat past a small well of something he couldnât name. He wondered if his dad ever had thoughts like that.
âWell, Iâll let you get your rest,â he said. âIâll be back.â
George nodded and gave Deanâs arm a squeeze. âAll right. Drive safe. Donât hit any goddamn trees.â
He shot Dean a knowing wink, and it almost had the younger man laughing. Georgeâs sense of humor was something else.
Dean then left George to rest. He made sure he had his wallet, keys, and your grocery list before he left your house and went back to the car. He checked his phone and saw a missed callâŚfrom Cas.
Dean was reminded again about Azazel, the kingpin who mightâve ordered a hit on his family. Along with the recent murders and arsons, and the connection from one of the victims to your company, Savage & Co.
Dean returned the call as he climbed into the Impala.
âDean. Everything all right?â Cas asked. âSam filled me in about the accident.â
âYeah, everyoneâs okayâŚwell, not really. Iâll explain later,â Dean replied. âListen, about what we talked about at the bar.â
âYes.â Cas said gravely. âIâd appreciate it if you didnât go to your father about this yet.â
âFunny, I was thinking the same thing.â Dean sighed. âMy girl just got some real bad news. I know you gotta keep digging into Savage & Co., but can you keep her out of it?â
âIs she all right?â
âYeah, more or lessâŚitâs her grandfather.â
âAh, I see,â Cas said. âIâm sorry to hear that.â
âThanks, man. Iâd rather her just focus on what she needs to do right now, you know?â
âI get it. And believe me, weâre keeping the investigation of Nick Savage quiet for now,â Cas said. âBut if we find something, or worse, if I canâtâŚIâll likely need to question her. She works directly with Savage, and from what I can tell, sheâs instrumental in bringing in and maintaining several of his major accounts.â
Dean stopped at a red light and took a moment to rub a hand over his tired face, rubbing his eyes. âYou donât really think sheâs got any idea of what that assholeâs into.â
âIâm not saying she does. But in working so closely with him, perhaps sheâs noticed things about her boss, and the company. Things sheâs kept to herself, out of self-preservation.â
Dean frowned. He didnât want to think about shit like that. It made his stomach churn at the thought of you working for someone who might be doing business with a crime lord, let alone Azazel.
âWell, when that day comes, give me a heads up, okay?â
âWill do.â
âThanks, Cas.â
Dean offered to take another day off to help you, but you wouldnât let him. He needed to go back to work, and you were able to arrange working from home for the next few weeks.
Even Nick couldnât refuse to accommodate you in a situation like this. He knew very well that if he pushed you too hard, youâd go directly to HR.
So he backed off, and told you to take as much time at home as you needed. It allowed you to put him, and that afternoon in his office, away from your mind to focus on taking care of your grandfather.
Though you called your best friend the day you got home from the hospital, AndrĂŠa didnât come by your house to see you and George until the end of the week. She cited mounting projects at work and some kind of tiff with her cousin Meg, but it all sounded like excuses to you.
However, she was gracious enough to bring dinner for the three of you on a Friday night. She cut up with George like normal, and even got him laughing, until a coughing fit forced him to stop. It also took most of the joy out of the rest of the evening.
While George went up to his room to rest, AndrĂŠa later joined you in the kitchen. You were washing the dishes, trying to focus on what you were doing. But your mind was buzzing continuously with future tasks and worries. Always, tasks and worries.
âHow are you holding up?â AndrĂŠa asked. She rubbed your back, and you gave her a slight smile.
âAll I can do is make him comfortable, for as long as possible,â you replied. There were tears in your friendâs eyes, but she dabbed them away with the back of her hand.
âWhat do you need? Anything, you just tell me,â she said.
It was a little easier for you to contemplate leaning on AndrĂŠa. You had been friends with her for years, and she was like another daughter to George.
On the other hand, asking Dean for help always made you hesitate. What you two had was still so new. You worried that this was too much for your relationship, too fast.Â
âWell,â you sighed as you wiped your hands dry on a kitchen towel. You didnât exactly want to talk about it, but there were things you had to start planning, even if you didnât know the exact timeframe.
However, as soon as you opened your mouth to reply, AndrĂŠaâs cell phone rang. She held up a finger to you and checked it. To your surprise, she actually answered it.
âHey, babe,â she replied with a smile. You heard Bennyâs deep voice on the line, asking a question. âYeah, Iâm still here. Iâm probably leaving soon though.â
She continued her conversation for a few more minutes, but you didnât hear anything after that. A tension headache was sharp behind your eyes, while anger (yes, anger) rolled hot under your skin. Your lips pursed. You busied yourself with straightening up the kitchen until she continued her call for another few minutes.
âSorry about that,â she said, finally turning her attention back to you. âSo what do you need?â
You put away the last dry dish and turned to her coolly.
âNothing.â
AndrĂŠa frowned. She knew there was something off with you, but her furrowed brows betrayed her confusion.
âWhat do you mean?â
âNothing,â you repeated. âDonât you need to head out, anyway?â
âNo, I was justâŚwhatâs up with you?â she asked.
âWhatâs up with me is my grandfatherâs dying!â you snapped. You left her in the kitchen, precisely so that sheâd follow you out. You grabbed her purse for her and went to the front door, where you stepped out.
AndrĂŠa was dismayed and confused as she followed you out onto the porch. She raised her brows at you when you shut the door and crossed your arms at her.
âI know you, and this isnât just about that. Whatâs the problem?â she asked.
âYou canât seem to detach from your boyfriend for more than five minutes to just be my friend. Thatâs the problem,â you replied. âBut why should I be surprised? Like always, youâre too wrapped up in yourself to consider anyone else.â
Her brows knitted together; she looked hurt by your words, but also defensive.
âHow can you say that when youâve been exactly the same way?â she accused. âSince you met Dean, Iâd be lucky to see you once a weekââ
âI call you every week,â you began, counting the list with your fingers. âYouâre always busy, but you never give me a day that works for you. And when we do make plans, you usually cancel. Why? Because youâre going sailing with Benny. Youâre going to a restaurant, hours away, just to try the new sushi bar beer garden, or whatever the hell. Or youâre going on an impromptu road trip, or youâre planning a summer trip to Greece. Give me fucking break, Dre.â
By now she was frowning angrily, her arms crossed. âYouâre mad at me because I have a life?â
âNo. Iâm happy for you that you found someone. I really am,â you said. âBut we clearly live in two different versions of reality. I just donât have the time or the energy to entertain yours.â
You knew you were being too harsh. You felt incredible guilt as soon as it all left your mouthâŚbut part of you also felt like a weight had been lifted off your chest. The problem was, you still felt heavy. Just in a different way.
Both of you were crying when AndrĂŠa left your house.
All too soon, a week became a month. In that time, Dean called you every day to check on you. He spent most of his evenings with you and George when he wasnât on shift. And when he was, sometimes Meg would drop in.
She understood your argument with AndrĂŠa, and she respected you for taking a stand when you needed to. She even confided you that sheâd had similar frustrations with her cousin lately.
But Meg wasnât your only visitor. Ellen had come a few times to bring you lunch and dinner, even breakfast, though you hadnât asked her to. You realized then how close Dean must be to his friends at the firehouse, along with the Harvelles; Ellen also refused to take any money from you for the food.
By the end of the month, George mainly spent his days sleeping. Pain medication made his days nearly painless, but not without struggle. You were doing your best to care for him while continuing to work full-time from home. You were also exhausted, though you refused to admit it.
Today was a better day, however, because George was awake. He was also more aware of his surroundings than usual.
He stopped you from adjusting his pillow so you would sit down on the edge of his bed. He took your hand in his, brushing a thumb over the back of it.
âIâm okay with this, you know,â he said. You pursed your lips, but he stopped you from whatever you were going to say. âI donât want to leave you. You know thatâŚbut Iâm so damn proud of you. Your Gram was, and still isâŚâ
Your lower lip wobbled as you tried and failed to keep your tears at bay. They stung in your eyes and slipped past your defenses, down your face.
âThe house is yours. But if thatâs too hard for you, just sell it,â he said, heaving a deep breath. âItâs just the bones. Youâre the heart. And you always have been.â
You opened your mouth to speak, but not a sound would come out. You held his hand with both of yours and stared down at them. Until his voice once again commanded your attention.
âI always thoughtâŚmoving to the city ruined my daughter. That we shouldâve stayed in Lebanon. That maybe I gave her too much freedom, and I failed her somehow along the way,â George said. His eyes were heavy with old heartache. And yet, they soon began to lighten.
âBut the day we lost a daughter, we gained one too,â he said. Then, he chuckled a little. âAnd I know I never failed with you, sweetheart.â
That proved to be too much for you. He pulled you into his arms like you were still a child, and he held you for a long time while you cried yourself out.
Though he eventually spotted Dean hesitating in the doorway. Heâd probably let himself in with the spare key youâd given him.
George raised a hand from your back and silently beckoned Dean inside his room. He was getting tired, drifting off thanks to the morphine.
âHey, lookie there. The boyfriendâs here,â George whispered with a bit of cheek. You sucked in a breath and raised your head, wiping at your eyes before you turned around. Dean met you with an attempt at a smile and a gentle hand on your back.
âJust got out of work?â you asked. Heâd been on a 24-hour shift, and youâd missed him. You stood and stepped into his welcoming embrace. He dropped a kiss on your forehead.
âYeah. Iâve got the next couple of days off,â Dean said. He greeted George next and asked him if he needed anything.
âJust some water,â the older man replied.
âIâll get it,â you said with a sniff. âNeed to start dinner too.â
âI already brought some food. You like Italian, right?â Dean said, with a subtle smile. It earned your sigh and a grateful smile. He knew very well that it was now one of your favorites. Italian meatballs always reminded you both of your first date.
âThank you,â you said, grasping his hand. He squeezed yours with a nod, before he let you go.
When you were out of earshot, George cleared his throat past a wet cough. Dean reached over and grabbed him a tissue. George took it with a nod. Again, he encouraged Dean to come closer.
âIâm not worried,â George said, between deep breaths. âYou know why?â
Dean just stared back for a moment. He genuinely had no idea what the man might say next.
âTell me,â he said.
âMy granddaughterâs strong. Always has been, because she had to be,â said George. âBut youâre gonna be there when sheâs not.â
Dean considered the weight of that charge. The anxiety in his chest felt familiar; like the day he got his badge at the Fire Academy, knowing then the responsibility he held in his hands.
Thatâs a lot to put on just three months of knowing this girl, came a more selfish thought. It sounded a lot like the guy he used to be, not too long before he met you.
But when Dean thought about you, and what youâd begun to mean to himâŚ
He realized that he only had one answer.
âYes, sir. I am,â said Dean.
George gave a tired smile. âGood man.â
And that night, an agreement was made.Â
In the morning, your grandfather was gone.
Dean held you through what he thought was the worst of your heartbreak. But after that dour morning, it was like a switch flipped inside you.
In the days after Georgeâs death, your shutters came up. You threw yourself into checklists and task after taskâin funeral arrangements and planning and contacting distant relatives and friends.
This was your failsafe. Your version of âautopilot.â And these things needed to get done, after all.
But Dean worried when he no longer saw the softer side of you. Like your heart had been wrung dry.Â
He inevitably had to go back to work, but in between the demanding hours of his schedule, he tried to get you to slow down. He saw the warning signs of you running yourself into the ground. He just didnât know how to help you land.
So Dean picked up slack where he saw it, often without you asking him to. He began fixing the house, one section at a time. He enlisted Bennyâs help, since he actually had a small construction business. Dean even paid for the materials himself without you knowing.
And one sunny afternoon, he took a break from repaving part of the cracked and uneven driveway to grab a beer inside. You were sitting at the kitchen table with stacks of papers all around you, your cellphone on speaker as some kind of elevator music continued to ring on a loop.
âCan you believe Iâve been on hold with the funeral director for 20 minutes?â you told him in irritation. But you didnât truly take sight of him until he came back from the kitchen.
He wore a familiar ensemble of jeans and black undershirt with a plaid shirt, rolled up to his elbows. He was covered in a fine layer of sweat, and his hands were dusty and stained from his work on the driveway. Dean looked tired, and that made you feel guilty.
Meanwhile, he frowned and popped open a beer. âYou want one of these? Looks like you could use one.â
You shook your head. With a sigh, you hung up the phone. Youâd try calling again later. Instead, you focused on the next item of your checklist for today.
âFood. Because weâre gonna need to eat after the service,â you inclined your head. âOkay, still need to come up with a list of caterers, because I donât think I can cook for that many people.â
Dean nodded at that. âLet me talk to Ellen. Sheâll give you a good price, and her food is good.â
You looked up from your notepad and considered him thoughtfully. You wouldnât have thought to cater from a bar, but he was right. Ellen had great food at the Roadhouse.
âOkay, Iâll call her,â you said.
âNo, Iâll call her,â Dean insisted. He set down the beer on the table and leaned his palms flat on its surface. âSweetheart, I told you Iâd help you with all this. You donât have to do it by yourself.â
âDean, youâve done enough,â you replied. Your brows drew together stubbornly. âYouâre paving my driveway right now, for Godâs sake! This is my responsibility, not yours.â
Dean frowned, making you sigh. You leaned back in your seat and crossed your arms.
âLook, weâve only been dating for three months,â you said. And in your mind, a good chunk of that time had been spent in the worst hell of your life. âThis right here? Itâs a lot. Iâm not expecting you to deal with all thisâŚâ
You bit your lip, and your gaze fell away from his as your insecurities took hold. The thoughts that had been plaguing you every night since this all began, on the night of the car accident.
âAndâŚif youâd rather take a break from us for a while, Iâd understand,â you said.
Your voice was more collected than you felt. But that didnât make it any easier when Dean stared back at you, mostly incredulous. You even thought you saw a thread of hurt there, and it made your heartache worsen.
Dean came around to your side of the table. He dragged a chair back and sunk into it, facing you directly.
âYou think thatâs the kind of guy I am?â he asked.
You immediately shook your head. You werenât trying to upset him, or imply that he wasnât reliable, or trustworthy, or whatever was running through his head. You were just trying to be realistic.
Youâre so pragmatic it hurts, as AndrĂŠa had often told you.
âDean, itâs not thatâŚâ you began, a bit helplessly. âI justââ
âJust, nothinâ.â His chair scraped toward you as he reached out for your hand. He made sure you looked him in the eyes when he said this next part.Â
âIâm not leaving you with this.â
Your gaze met his, though you desperately tried to keep your heart from rising into your throat.Â
âIâm not leaving you,â Dean said. His tone, his eyes, his hold on your hand was firm.
For a moment, you stared at him, unblinking, even as tears swam in your eyes.Â
Heâs not leaving you.Â
Not like everyone else in your life.
You were grateful. Too grateful, even, for words.
When you finally broke down into tears, Dean realized what an idiot heâd been. Your wall of stoicism had been just thatâa flimsy wall. Now it was shattered, and so were you.
It scared him just how much, as he gathered you onto his lap and into his arms. You didnât seem to care that he was dirty and covered with sweat. You clung to him strong, and he held you back just as tightly.
âNo matter what I did, it wasnât enough,â you confessed. âYou save people all the time. I couldnât save anyone in my life.â
Dean frowned. He cupped the back of your head, and he felt your tears sliding down his neck. His voice was thick with emotion when he was able to reply.
âOh, baby. Itâs not your fault.â
âI canâtâŚI canât do anything. Anything that matters.â Your voice was a broken whisper. It damn near broke his heart.Â
âNow you know thatâs not true,â he said. âIâm not gonna let you lie to yourself like that.â
You trembled and heaved with sobs, and he continued to hold you.
Just be there, Sam had told him, when Dean had called him from the hospital. Sam reminded him again last week, when George finally passed.
Is that all Iâm supposed to do? Dean thought. His brows furrowed, but he tried to hide his frustration.
He was used to people depending on him. He led a team. Before then, heâd looked out for Sam all his life. Dean had never had to help someone get through this kind of grief though. He just wanted to help you, in whatever way he could.
Because he was worrying, just like you. That whatever he did, it wouldnât be enough.
But he couldnât leave you.Â
I canât, and I wonât, he thought. So he took a breath, and he said the first true thing that came to mind.
âYouâre the strongest woman I know, you know that?â Dean said. He spoke low and steady, but with the conviction he felt. âAnd thatâs a tall order, considering some of the badass ladies Iâve got in my life.â
A smile tugged at his lips when he considered people like Ellen and Jo, Jody and Donna. He mightâve lost his mom, but he and Sam hadnât lacked when it came to influential women in their lives.
âBut I saw it the day we met. I see it every time weâre together,â he continued. âYou work hard as hell. You take care of everyone around youâŚâ
You were still quiet, trying to stifle your crying.
Dean let out a breath. âMan, if you only knew how much youâve been helping me. Keeping my damn feet on the ground with this wholeâŚarsonist mess my dadâs been investigating. Digging up the past, my mom, the whole damn thing.â
With a sniffle, you uncurled from him, just enough to reveal your face. Your grip on his shirt loosened, your palm flattening on his chest. He held your hand there and turned his lips to your forehead. He sensed that you were calming down. That you were listening.
âThat matters to me,â he told you.
You nodded and tightened your hand on his. âMe too.â
Your voice was still shaky, but it sounded a little stronger.
âSee? You might as well face it.â Dean grinned. âYouâre a badass chick with a big heart.â
You snorted in response. Your lips even twitched at a smile. He spied it when he looked down at you. And you rested easier against him as your tears subsided.
âThank you,â you whispered. He dried your cheek with a brush of his hand.Â
âFor what?â he asked.
âFor staying.â
AN: So first off, I'm sorry for the gritty "reality" of this one. It's just where the story took me, though it serves a purpose narratively and for both the reader and Dean's character development.
But also, I think this has just been on my mind, since both my grandmother and great uncle (brother and sister) died within a year of one another due to different forms of cancer. My great uncle passed in May of this year, and my grandmother two years this past October.
Again, I'm sorry if this one was too heavy, but art does imitate life and this was probably my brain trying to express those emotions I couldn't fully make sense of at the time. George will be missed, but will still be felt in the rest of this story, as I'm sure any of you who've lost close family members will understand. đ
Next Time:
The identity of Azazel will finally be revealed in Part 12. But first...
You nodded. âBy the way, it was nice of Sam and Eileen to come. And Meg and Cas.âÂ
Dean smiled.
âThey can be your people too,â he said. âIf you want âem to be.â
You couldnât help it. Your tears brewed and bubbled over. And you moved slowly across the couch to twine your arms around his neck. Deanâs lips tugged at a smile, and he welcomed you with an arm wrapping around your waist.
Both of you were still wearing the same clothes youâd been wearing all day; you in your black dress and Dean in his slacks and white buttoned-down shirt, though by now without the jacket, and the shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
You were infinitely exhausted. But one thing had become clear to you over the past few weeks.
âThank you. Thank you for today, and for every day since we met,â you said shakily.

_______________________________________________
ekko goes above and beyond treating you right.
anything you want, all yours. that new purse? check your mailbox. you need your nails done? here's $300, keep the change, don't worry about it. he always makes sure you're pleased, even if you don't ask. he knows everything about you by heart. favorite flowers, favorite foods, plus your usual orders, so it's not uncommon to come home to food on the table with a fresh vase of florals seated next to it.
of course, nothing about this relationship was ever one sided. there is no one who prances around announcing that ekko is your man quite like you do. you make sure ekko knows that if he ever needs you, no matter what, you're there.
in return, you get whatever you want.
"ekko," you sing, putting your phone down in the cup holder. your hand rests over ekko's, which has a gentle grip on your thigh. crickets chirp outside, veiled beneath the dark sky and lack of light. you're speeding down an empty backroad on your way back home from a little shopping spree at a mall an hour and some change away. "i wanna go somewhere."
he hums. "where were you thinking?"
"dunno yet," you lean your weight onto the center console, maybe somewhere in asia."
"yeah?" he asks, squeezing the fat of your thigh. you smile wide. "sure. let me know when you decide."
"i will, thanks baby," you chirp, gently pulling his hand up your thigh and closer to your center. his fingers catch on the hem, pushing your denim skirt up and gently pressing his thumb into your clit. he's rubbing featherlight circles into it, running over the lacy underwear he bought for you a while back. your gasp is barely heard beneath the music.
the engine whirrs, and you see the speedometer shoot up.
so impatient.
.:*â
it truly didn't take long for ekko to book that flight. you said the place, and about 30 minutes later everything was set in stone.
excitement rushed through your body as you packed, making sure to tuck your matching sets beneath your clothes. he deserved some type of reward, right?
when you finally arrived at your hotel, late into the night, jet-lagged to all hell, you couldn't help but ask ekko if he needed some help. he did everything, all you did was walk around, complain about your feet hurting a bit, and cling to his arm. regardless, he insisted you worried about nothing and just got comfy for the night because he had something big planned tomorrow.
never would you have ever guessed that you'd end up on a cruiser yacht.
he had you blindfolded after you returned to the hotel from eating and shopping, promising that you'd love it and that you just needed to be patient and trust him. you did; no hesitation there.
and once he slipped it off after your minor freak-out wondering what you're stepping onto that has to be so wobbly, it took your breath away.
the sun sinks below the horizon, yellow rays glittering off of the water. your hands met his, perched on your hips, looking back to find his prideful grin.
"ekko..." you pout.
"iii know, i'm a great boyfriend, you love me, i know," he jokes, chuckling as you walk around the cockpit, marveling the fact that you're on one. "it'll leave soon, there's a cooler with drinks, and i can take pictures for you."
you smile wide. "my personal photographer. in fact, take some of me right now before the sun sets," you rush to hand him your phone, quickly posing yourself in front of the scene.
ekko took taking photos for you so seriously, genuinely telling you how to switch your posing and expression, and without missing a beat always hyping you up to the third degree.
so when you heard nothing from ekko, no 'oooh's or 'mhm's, you turned to him.
"ekko?"
"sorry, you're just..." he laughs sheepishly, avoiding your gaze as if he wasn't the key to your heart. "so pretty."
you roll your eyes. "you're so corny."
the tone of your voice completely betrayed your words, honeyed and bashful. he catches it, shaking his head and raising the camera again.
"rightâokay, let's try this again."
.:*â
the pictures came out great. you wanted to wait until you got home to pick your favorites to post, but all of them were so good that you didn't know which one to pick.
you leaned against the railing, staring out into deep night, city lights twinkling in the distance. the cool sea breeze rushes against your skin, the salty scent of the ocean flooding around you. it was too good of an opportunity to not take more.
"ekko, take a few more for me?"
he hums, not a moment of protest, finding your phone and settling into the seat opposite of you.
you take your seat as well, your torso twisted and legs crossed. his mouth opensâ'move your leg a little' rests on his tongue, until he inspects your gaze through the phone. you weren't quite looking at the camera, but rather...behind it.
"you okay?"
you nod. "yeah...you look good as fuck over there."
he fumbles over his words for a moment, looking down at his attire. "in my spiderman shirt?"
"mhm, especially in your spiderman shirt," you look him up and down, eyes sliding over his muscles. "come back over here real quick?"
he's surprised he didn't trip from how quickly he scrambled over to you, sitting in the seat beside you. his smile is poorly hidden as you crawl into his lap. his hands find your waist, pulling you closer.
you direct his face up, fingers gently pushing at his chin, leaning down to lock your lips together.
his hands roam your bodyâclearly too impatientâfingers pushing beneath your shirt, pulling up and revealing your bra. intricate lace, almost in a floral pattern, dyed a dusty pink that was barely visible under the moonlight. the cups had a deep cut, plunging down from your collar bone to the bottom of your sternum with a dainty little decorative bow.
you literally feel him getting hard. he looks up, fingers running along the band. "this for me?"
"sure is." you nod, reaching down to tug your skirt down. the hem of your matching panties peek out. "you like 'em?"
"do i?" he glances above the short barrier at the captain, who isn't paying an ounce of attention. just humming in his own world, only focused on the path they were going on. perfect.
"shit..." his lips reconnect with yours before trailing down, sucking hickies into your skin, tightly squeezing your thighs, brows furrowing.
you can already tell he's going to find a way to seat you right on his face so you stop himânot because you don't want that, but you've been spoiled enough for one dayâpushing his shoulders back and getting off of him.
he looked like a kicked puppy when you separated from him and you just roll your eyes, sinking down onto your knees with a wide smile. it all connects for him and he relaxes against the seat, lips parting as you quickly unbutton his pants, your nail hooking at the band of his trunks. you tug, down, down, down, until his dick springs free and lightly taps his naval.
you waste no time, your lips meeting the base, then parting to let your tongue run up a vein that lead you to the sensitive tip.
ekko shivers, eyes shifting from the arch in your back to your lips, leaving glossy stamps all along his length.
you, on the other hand, kept your eyes locked onto his. he kept averting his gaze. for what, you weren't sure. but you tapped his tip against your tongue, capturing his attention. finally, his eyes meet yours. now you feel like you can continue.
you kiss the tip again, smiling up at him as you allow it to breach your lips, sliding into your mouth agonizingly slow.
"fuuuck," he drags, watching you slowly sink down, taking almost all of it yet stopping where your lips met your fingers.
you get acquainted with the feeling, adjusting your tongue to press against the skin. your cheeks hollow, your head slowly falling into a bobbing movement, stroking him alongside your movements.
he struggles to not thrust straight up into your mouth, gripping the edge of the leather cushions. one hand meets the back of your head but doesn't push or pull, just rests there.
his hips twitch, torso relaxing against the back of the seat, growing rigid whenever your tongue ran across just the right spot. his chest rises and falls rapidly, quickly drawing in breaths then moaning them right out.
your jaw already started to ache, but looking up at him as he falls apart from just your mouth is beyond worth it. he shakes his head, eyes leaving yours, squeezing shut, and you can tell he's already close.
his hand leaves your head, forearm laying against his forehead. you tap him, a reminder. look at me. he peeks down, a breathy chuckle pushing through.
"doin' so good for me, yeah? 'm closeâ" he warns youâyou nod in acknowledgment.
you unhinge your jaw, sticking your tongue out so he can watch his cum spill all over it,
he sucks air in through his teeth, and before you know it you're bent over the seat, looking out onto the horizon. you start to speak and he just shushes you, tugging your skirt up and pulling your panties to the side. soaked.
maybe you were just too impatient, because before he could even get comfortable you were reaching back to put it in. his laugh rings behind you, shooing your hand away so he can finish sinking all the way inside you.
his pelvis meets your ass and you almost caught a glimpse of the back of your skull. he started slow, gripping your waist and bringing you back to meet his strokes.
you're squeezing around him so tight, and all he can do is stare in awe at it. his length glistens, coated in your juices. then he couldn't take it, his pace quickening, watching the fat of your ass recoil against his movements.
it feels euphoric, almost unreal. staring out into the night sky, stars twinkling above you, ocean swaying below you, and ekko thrusting into your heat, moaning behind youâit was overwhelming, it had your flesh running hot.
"feels good?" he questions, though your gasps and mewls answer loud and clear.
"fuck, yes."
"mhm, you're mine, right?"
"a-all yours." you nod.
"all mine?" he asks, and it's rhetorical. not like you could reply anyway, because your moans caught in your throat, rendering any chance you had at words useless.
your noises drowned beneath the whirring of the motor paired with the water swaying beneath you, which you're endlessly grateful for. you're lucky that driver pays almost no attention to what's happening behind him.
you were especially loud, and it only got worse as you felt your orgasm building. ekko knew it too, the way your voice shook, the way you tightened around him, the way you begged him not to stopâit was pushing him over the edge too.
"fuck, that's it. just like that. i got you, okay? good."
your cries overlap ekko's softer groans as you came, your form trembling, jolts of pleasure coursing throughout your body as he fucked you through it.
he had to hold back from coming inside you, letting you ride out your high before pulling out to release all over your back.
he gives you no time to recover, immediately diving in for another round, intoxicated with the way you gasps caught in your throat, holding onto the seat for dear life.
he leans down, his lips meeting your shoulder, his brows furrowed. it did not take long for the two of you to get close again, still sensitive from your previous release. within a few minutes, your juices coat his length and another load lands on your back, seeping down and settling into the dip of your spine.
you're both catching your breath, ekko presses a kiss to the shell of your ear, and you have to stop him from kissing you more. "we're almost there," you hiss, and he huffs, lifting off of you to get himself together,
thank god there were paper towels on board. he cleans his release off of your back and skirt, managing to get the both of your appearances together by the time the yacht met the docks.
the moment the captain comes back to thank you for riding with him, ekko's giving him the quickest thank you possible along with his tip and rushing you off of the boat.
"let's get back to the room? i just wanna see that set you have on a little better."
you know that the second that door closes behind you in the hotel, there is not a chance you'll be stopping.

so your crow strider au gave me inspiration for my own au, but i've built up the idea in my brain so much that now im scared to try to put it to paper (oops) did you ever deal with this while making crow strider? (and if you did, how you got over it would be much appreciated thanks fhdjks) also your art is cool :]
Hi, sure, i encountered a few blocks when writing CSAU and other projects. I think my method comes down to a couple rules
You need to know how the story ends from the start, so everything in the story leads to the end. Things can change about the contents of the story as you write it and you change your mind about the events that will transpire in it, but you need an end goal you can build your story towards. Most importantly, this is what allows you to add foreshadowing for said ending and structure the narrative in a clear direction. Otherwise, you might come up with a cool ending too late and regret some choices from past chapters that now donât help this new ending you want
On that same note (and iâll proceed to copy and paste from an old post) You need to have a Word document with a rough timeline of the events from start to finish. You need to know how it ends from the beginning and how they get there. It can be really, really vague, but it has to be there. It can go like
. They start the game, the trolls bother them.
.both games go to hell
.scratch
.trip, develop relationships
.new set of kids/teen drama
.old kids they get there
.to hell again
.John retcons everything
.new timeline
.they win
And that's homestuck simplified, Those are your Acts. With them, you will know where you're going and if you need to change something earlier. Everything will be constantly up to change of course, but you will be going from point A to point Z more easily.
From there, you go to every point in that list and create a Word document for all of them. I have them in different folders to have every act separated and in order.
A folder for each Doc for every Act, Numbered, and in each one make more lists like that one telling what happens, for example
WordDoc1 - ACT 1 "They start the game, the trolls bother them"=
.John needs to get his game
.introduce Rose
.introduce the trolls on pester chats
. John gets the game
.introduce Dave
.etc
And those are your chapters. Now you can know the extent of what you want to do and if it makes any sense.
I addition to that, every Folder can contain not only the Word document for the Act but also relevant texts and art that are connected to the Act, so evey folder is all about that specific act and any inspiration for it.
Another piece of advice I can give you is to hint at anything important. That's a rule of comedy; actually, the comedian usually closes the show with something related to the first things they said.
That works for everything, and makes people go, "Oh the thing! The meaningless thing they said earlier, it was a clue all along!"
Interconnect it like a web, and that web will stop the story from falling
Homestuck is so ridiculously interconnected that you lose track of the stuff and objects that repeat that have no way to be where they got to be, songs and people and events that are too similar to not be connected but nobody addresses, things like that make it feel like you're dealing with a universe and not just a line of events.
3. Yet another thing, it's something I'm still trying to assimilate, and is that less is more, sometimes things don't need to be said, specialy not bluntly, and an expression, a gesture, a flinch can summarize them. Backgrounds can be reduced, and ideas can be conveyed.
one example is, In homestuck, it's never said that Dave was raised with lack of food. He never sais it, but it's shown in how happy he was to find a warm bottle of juice in his closet, how there is only weapons on the kitchen and no sign of food, how he later sais he never learned what the purpose of a fridge was until he saw it on tv. If someone is lacking something, don't have them say, "i grew up without X thing" show what filled that space in the absence of X thing.
Instead of some character saying, "My dad was never there for christmas" have them say how they thrited for presents at the local goodwill, payed with their lawn mowing money and put the presents under the tree themselves for their siblings and mom.
4. Something that I always have in mind when writing the dialogs and sketching the scenes, is
"I have an idea; what's the easiest way for someone to get the idea, to get the feelings i want to transmit from the idea?" I made the art something I could handle drawing hundreds of times, simplified the coloring, the aspect symbols, the way I draw backgrounds, the way I write dialogs, etc.
That will save you time and work and could prevent you from getting stuck with a project too big to handle
5. This is the most important one: The first draftâs only purpose is to exist.
Writing is like playing darts sometimes; you only get closer to hitting the center by missing it and learning what not to do. Thatâs an actual rule on animation and a motto on the Disney office. âGet it wrong as quick as you can,â because when you learn what youâre doing wrong is when you start learnign what doing it right means.
If it helps, title your first draft âthe dumb version,â because thatâs what it isâthe version to get the idea out of your head, and then you built over it.
On the same note, once you write "the dumb version" donât correct it. Rewrite it. Itâs annoying, I know, i know, but fixing and fixing a text only carries the mistakes from the first draft, and everything looks kind of disconnected, because it ends up being a Frankenstein text of all the versions of the story mixed together.
This also applies to art; thatâs how I handle both writing and drawing; if itâs not working, hold onto the core idea, new page, restart.
Rewriting it puts it in perspective; it feels like a text of its own, with a clear intent in mind.
I think thatâs all I have. Making a story is mostly about managing your strengths and weaknesses, organizing and not being scared of it not being perfect.
Hope this helps.

Hey you got an advices for a newbie who thinks about doing commissions? :>
And did you have any bad experiences? (You don't have to answer if it is too private)
I won't go into detail for any bad commission experiences, but I can at least tell you what I learned from em in the form of the advice you asked for:
PRICING! When figuring out pricing, ask yourself the following:
What is an hour of my work worth? This question helps you avoid underselling yourself aka selling under minimum wage. You're definitely worth more than that. $20 is a pretty good starting point for folks who aren't too confident in their own stuff.
How long does it take to complete an art piece? Create one sample of every type of commission you want to sell. Time yourself when you make them. Whatever amount of time it takes to create each piece multiplied by the hourly wage you've set for yourself is going to be your base price for each thing ($20 x 2 hours for a full body sketch = $40). You can also use the samples you've made to help advertise in your commission post and show your potential clients what it is they can expect from you!
How should I charge for add-ons? Once again, figure how long something takes, and shoot for something that seems both fair for you and the client. For extra characters or something like a background, for example, I charge an extra 50% of the base price.
PROBLEMATIC CLIENTS! Got a client that doesn't know what they actually want? Too wishy washy? Too nitpicky? There's a solution! Offer a limited amount of revisions. I offer two free ones, personally. Once the client is out of revisions, I charge them 20% for each additional revision, and I MAKE SURE THEY CAN SEE THAT ON THE FORM THEY FILL OUT. That way, clients are encouraged to get their WHOLE idea in order before going to you. No one wants to be charged extra for a mistake they made, after all -- And it's definitely their mistake if they leave out any details they later deem important and want you to fix.
THE AFOREMENTIONED FORM TO BE FILLED! I used Google Forms, personally. It makes your little business look a bit more professional AND it helps you keep track of multiple projects at once, while prompting the clients to give you the info you specifically need (like reference images). It's good!
BE PROFESSIONAL! You're more likely to get repeat customers if you maintain a professional customer service attitude while handling clients, and deliver your work as promptly as you can. Delivering work PROMPTLY is definitely something you need to imagine me circling and underlining. Please do your best to not take, like, a year? To complete a commission? It's a really bad look. Treat it like homework. Give yourself your own little due date to work with.
While we're on that! DEFINITELY send your clients WIPs while you work! Showing that you're making progress is a great way to get feedback from the client before it's too late to change anything, PLUS it keeps their mind at ease about the possibility of you potentially taking their money and running.
KEEP YOURSELF SAFE! Speaking of taking money and running, set up a system that works when it comes to charging clients and delivering the goods. I have been burned in the past and have learned from this. Some artists charge their clients upfront before delivering anything at all. Personally, I'm not a fan of this, because then it leaves the client open to feeling uneasy about possibly getting scammed. Obviously I'm not a scammer, but to lift the weight of that possibility on the minds of my clients, I charge half upfront and half upon completion. This way, I already have SOME money so the client isn't gonna "dine-and-dash" me, and the client, likewise, is holding the other half of the pay in a friendly self-imposed hostage situation. I do recommend this!
I also use Paypal to INVOICE my clients. This way, I have full control over the nature of what I'm charging and can avoid the client accidentally (or maliciously) sending a payment with something in there meant to get my Paypal account shut down. DO NOT WRITE JOKES ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE CHARGING YOUR CLIENT FOR. DO NOT GET YOURSELF IN TROUBLE FOR SOMETHING STUPID.
And this is all the advice I currently have on me! I hope it helps!

I don't think you meant to do this, so I'm very sorry, but you just knocked me into Blitz defender mode. I might do a longer post on this later, since it's a tangent and I want to keep it short.
Blitz IS responsible. He adopted a very traumatized teenager and got her on her feet. He cooks and cleans on the regular and keeps himself and Loona fed and comfortable. He runs a (often fairly successful) business where he looks out for the safety of his team every day. He overcomes his society's prejudices against imps in order to do this. We just learned that he DID follow through and get insurance for I.M.P. When he lets things slide and his decisions get bad in Ghostfuckers, everything (especially Moxxie- let's be honest) falls apart.
What traits make him look irresponsible? Well, he's impulsive. He makes bad money decisions at times. And bad relationship decisions other times out of insecurity. He hates paper work (and I think he's probably bad at it). He sometimes falls on his face, especially when getting out of cars. These are . . . real (especially for people with ADHD, trauma, etc..). They do not overshadow the stuff above.
He's the responsible one in a lot of his relationships.
Stolas will be the responsible one at times too. Stolas is USED TO being responsible. He's also going through a lot though and needs WAY MORE SELF-AWARENESS STILL (see above), so he'll need a lot of help from Blitz, especially as he gets settled.
The good news: Blitz is up for the task. He's used to helping and encouraging people who have been through a lot. He knows how to navigate his world. He's not going to panic about this- taking care is what he's good at.
And I think that some of Stolas's qualities (meticulous, well read, compassionate, polite until he's seriously pushed. . . even a bit of the confidence that comes with entitlement . . .) will benefit them as a couple after some adjustment.
Stolas Makes Decisions Alone
I'm here to predict more problems ahead for Stolas. But don't worry- I do think he'll get through them because of character growth.
Stolas has a pattern of taking drastic actions that he believes are right and getting so caught up in his own point of view that he doesn't really listen to anyone else. I don't think he realizes this about himself. As much as he's now dealing with the consequences of his decisions at the end of Season 2, he hasn't yet learned that he can't go it alone. That he needs to communicate with the people his decisions impact- namely Blitz and Octavia, the people he cares for most. What I'm saying is, even though he's not the only one, our lovely owl man is a misunderstanding factory.
As for why he's like this, I have some ideas, but first, let's quickly go over the ways we've seen this behavior play out in HB.
It's treated as kind of light in Season 1 . . . despite being great with words, he's a lousy communicator because he gets carried away with his own ideas.
In Murder Family, Stolas has no idea that Blitz is panicking and . . . yes, I believe feeling pressured in this moment, even if he likes the deal later. In Loo Loo Land, he doesn't pay attention to Octavia's (not subtle) reactions enough to realize that no, she does not want to go to Loo Loo, and she absolutely doesn't want to bring the person Stolas cheated with along as a bodyguard. Also . . . as soon as Stolas listens to Octavia here, their communication improves, and Octavia is allowed to decide on the next father daughter activity.
The independent decision making tendency becomes more serious . . . tragic . . . in The Full Moon.
Stolas goes into the episode with a plan to do what he believes is right (freeing Blitz from himself), and he's so set on it that he blindsides the guy and shuts him out at the first hint of rejection, unable to pay enough attention to realize that it's . . . not actually rejection, just another wounded person reacting to a sudden change, since the entire decision making process already happened inside Stolas's mind.
Okay . . . Mastermind and Sinsmas.
I'm letting him off the hook for Mastermind, because he had only seconds to do something to save Blitz's life. I don't think he's wrong here. BUT symbolically, in the courtroom, Stolas rarely looks at Blitz. Someone who loves him is standing behind him, and there are moments of recognition between them, but Stolas still faces the decision, and his fate, alone.
In Sinsmas, we get the most blatant version of this kind of decision making. Yes, I know he's off his meds and going through a lot. He could have waited a few more minutes for Blitz to get back and talked through his decision to march up to his palace and demand to see his daughter. Blitz could have helped him calm down, and they could've had a conversation and decided on the best way to do it.
But that isn't how Stolas makes decisions. It isn't how he's EVER made decisions. Helping Stolas would put Blitz in danger, or Blitz might try to convince him to wait. So in Stolas's mind, if it's a choice between being kept from his daughter and dying alone by Andrealphus's hand, well . . .
There's so much that could be discussed here. Medication/depression. Suicidality. Autism . . . does this pattern stem in part from difficulty reading social cues?
These are all topics worth analyzing but . . . here's one thing that I think is at the core of Stolas's character regardless of the situation or other factors.
Stolas had all of his decisions made for him for his entire life. No one consulted him. Ever. Not about his career. Not about his marriage. Not about how he would choose to behave and conduct himself in the world.
Then when he was somewhere between 18 and 20, he had a child. And suddenly, his decisions mattered. Not in the big ways for himself. He still had to carry out all of his responsibilities. But he could decide how to raise this kid (Stella wasn't really interested in raising her after all). He could do everything in his power to make her childhood joyful, to make her feel loved, to teach her that she could be herself.
The problem is, making decisions for a kid doesn't make you a great collaborative decision maker. Being a parent means being an authority. He wasn't totalitarian like his own father, but there wasn't really anyone to honestly talk through his decisions and process his emotions with. So he's spent 35ish years never making a decision with someone else.
He's also rich and powerful, and that both keeps him isolated and gives him . . . a somewhat outsized view of his own importance and ability to control situations, in my opinion.
But now Octavia is 17, and making decisions that impact her without adequately communicating doesn't really work anymore.
And the other person he loves is Blitz. And yes, Mastermind is an exception, but Blitz usually doesn't need to be rescued or protected. He certainly doesn't need to be protected from Stolas (i.e. The Full Moon). He needs a partner. And Stolas needs one too.
So yeah, until Stolas learns to communicate (or at least learns that it's necessary) I worry about what he'll go off and do on his own.
Note: please don't take this as me blaming EVERYTHING on Stolas. Blitz and Octavia both have some responsibility for the miscommunications that go on. I just think this particular tendency of Stolas's is interesting and wanted to explore it.
#lol sorry for doing this to you @lonewolf23k#I'm not mad at your response at all#you just made me think thoughts

Annoying edge case for lycanthropy: a dragon who is also a werewolf.
(A short story I wrote back in 2022 for twitter. I've slightly re-edited it, but it's still "twittery" in how it uses linebreaks (because there used to be post-boundaries there). Sorry! )
So on the full moon, they uncontrollably turn into⌠A much smaller and squishier humanoid. They can't wait to get their scales and fire breath and wingspan back. They're so vulnerable in their werewolf form!
No one at the werewolf support meetings is sympathetic.
They're all humans or nearly, so one of them is like "it's just so scary. I'm huge, and inhuman, and I feel like I'm made of weapons, with my claws. Everyone fears me, and I fear myself sometimes, never knowing what I might do, if I lose control and just let the rage outâŚ" And the werewolf-dragon is like "and then you turn into a werewolf! It's so annoying, I agree"
Everyone else just turns to look at them, slowly
They do take some tips about werewolf safety. They just do it backwards, because instead of making sure they can't get out and cause death and destruction, it's more about making sure no one can get in and attack them in their merely nigh-invulnerable werewolf form. When you're a dragon, turning into a nearly unkillable rage monster of claws and fangs is a major downgrade. It's a real moment of weakness, and who knows if your ancient enemies or some upstart knight is going to try to take advantage of that moment of weakness?
They get infinitely more annoyed when they finally find a witch who can do the right ceremony and lift the curse of lycanthropy. "there⌠With the burning of this silver candle, you are finally free. You're human in all moonphases, now." "WAIT A FUCKING SECOND, HUMAN?!"
They got turned into the humanized version of their werewolf form. Permanently.
Always read the fine print before asking a witch to do a complicated magical ritual on you.
"also, question: how the hell did you burn a silver candle? Isn't the melting point of silverâŚ" "one thousand eight hundred degrees, yes. It wasn't easy. Look. "
She pulls back a curtain and points. There's a complicated bellows system being vigorously pumped by a bunch of little black cats, each wearing a tiny witch's hat. They're sweating with exertion and the heat.
"we're done, my lovelies. You can stop now" The kitties hop down off the bellows and lie down at her feet, or wander off looking for food. The witch looks down at the former dragon, now barely 5 feet tall. "why do you think I asked for my fee in cat food?"
"but it was ALL cat food. Don't you need to-" The former dragon pauses mid-sentence, as the witch pulls off her traditional witchy headwear to reveal two pointy feline ears. "you were saying?"
"nevermind. Thanks, I guess." The dragon walks to the door, then turns around. "hey, I need to find out how to be a human, would you happen to know anything or anyone I can ask?" The witch looks up from sitting on the floor with a leg behind her head, licking the inside of her thigh "wouldn't have a clue, sorry love", she says with a smile.
The witch has to show up later and bail the former dragon out of jail. Apparently they accosted a city guard after being told "you can't just wander around the city naked". The dragon told them to contact the catwitch because it's not like they know any other humanoids.
The guard wasn't physically hurt, but getting jumped by a small naked human after merely pointing out you need to wear trousers or a dress or something in public is the kind of thing that leaves mental scars that'll take a while to fade.
Even if your tiny nude opponent was mainly trying to scratch or bite you with claws or fangs they no longer have
The former dragon ends up living with the catwitch. She could use some help with the bellows, and even if the dragon can no longer provide her own fire, they still know a lot about it.
And even if they're now a short little weakling who has to be reminded to wear clothes, they are a bit better at pumping the bellows than a pack of kittens.
Plus they can help with making potions and such in ways the cats can't, what with having thumbs.
They live together for a while, until the grumpy now-human finds out that another dragon has taken up residence in their former hoard.
And that will just not do!
So the dragon convinces the catwitch to come with them on an adventure to raid their own hoard and defeat (or at least evict) the dragon.
So they set out, the former dragon having to figure out the weaknesses in their own defenses and how to navigate a space built for dragons, not tiny humanoids. They're wearing the minimum in clothing they can get away with, and wielding a sword almost bigger than they are.
And following, the catwitch with a broom and a big sack of magical devices and reagents, and a little procession of kittens in their hats.
(the former dragon uses they/them pronouns. Their human body does have a sex, but when gender was explained to them they called it a "foolish human thing" and never bothered with it, just like their opinions on silverware and public indecency laws)
As far as anyone can tell, dragons have only one gender, and it's dragon.
Anyone who has asked further questions about dragon gender, sex, or reproduction has ended up crispy and good with ketchup.
They manage to evict the squatting dragon, and the witch is like "well, I guess you got nearly everything you want now. I'll take my cats back to the cityâŚ" And the ex-dragon is like "WAIT⌠I was thinking, maybe you could⌠Use my hoard as a new shop? There's plenty of room"
"are you asking me to stay?" "n-no⌠I mean, yes? Shut up. It's just because it would be a good place for you. After all, your shop has that leaky roof, and you were running out of storage space, and the mayor always wanted you kicked outâŚ"
"oh I see, so it's just for me? How kind. You don't care either way, right?" "right! I don't care! I don't need or want you around! I don't care about silly human things" "human?" she asks with a smile, wiggling her ears on the top of her head. "shut up you know what I mean"
"so you don't want me to stay around you? You don't have a reason why you want to be near me, to be with me?" she says "with" with a certain slant on it, as she rests her arm on the shoulder of the former dragon, having to lean over her to reach. "n-n-nâŚ"
The witch switches to cupping the former dragon's face in her palms. "and your face is so warm, little one. Are you trying to breathe fire? You're turning red, so maybe you areâŚ"
"stop it! I⌠I justâŚ" "yes?" the witch lets go, but her tail curls around the waist of the former dragon, like they are walking hand in hand down a beach.
"I like you, alright? I want you to stay. I want to be with you! Is that so wrong?"
"nope!" says the witch, happily pulling them into a kiss.
We zoom out, past a pile of gold coins and goblets and scepters, as little black kittens in adorable hats play in the hoard, ambushing each other in play-fights from the high ground of a treasure chest.

Wrt Maizuru and her talismans; I always assumed it's an Eastern magic adaptation to the likely even lower mana levels there (very few monsters or dungeons seems to imply a serious lack of mana going around). Essentially crafting and readying the magic over a long period of time because it's harder to scrape it together, so you prepare the talismans well in advance over time. The system is noted to be an adaptation of Gnomic script; likely brought from the west and adapted culturally over time?
Refering to this
Here's some other comments from the replies of that post
heattth About Maizuru scrolls. Traditionally in DnD and other RPGs magic scrolls are basically stored spells. Like, a spell made into an item that can be used later. In universe it would be a way for mages to save their magic by storing it ahead of time. I wonder if in Dungeon Meshi it works similarly.
trans-leek-cookie Maizuru's choice of tools is likely largely regional, bc it seems to be based on how talismans are common in east Asia IRL. That plus the paper dolls, which I believe are related to shikigami? Also, iirc in the east, tallmen would generally be the most magically proficient race, so while western areas might've mainly been influenced by elves, in the east tallmen probably developed their own traditional techniques
I'm not really familiar with this subject so I don't have much to add. It does make sense for it to be regional, there's mostly tallmen on the eastern archipelago them doing magic their own way makes total sense.

PART TWO Series Masterlist
I will update the series every 1-4 days depending on my schedule
You felt like absolute shit. Your whole body ached and waves of nausea flowed through you. Slowly you lifted your heavy eyelids and looked around. Nat, Clint, Thor, and Wanda all sat around you as you laid in a hospital bed.Â
âY/Nâs awake.â, Wanda said to the others.Â
Everyone looked towards you.Â
âHow you feeling?â, Clint asked.
âAwful.â, you groaned, âWhat the fuck even happened?â
Your memories of the previous night were a blur. The group looked around to each other silently debating who would fill you in.
âDo you remember anything?â, Nat questioned.
âI remember up to when we were on the dance floor but after that, nothing.â
Nat relayed the previous night's events to you, adding details of what happened after you blacked out. Like the fact that Bucky had personally driven you and Nat to the emergency room, and slipped one of the nurses a couple hundred to make sure you got the best treatment possible.Â
âHe also had me give him your phone number so he could check up on you.â
Internally you lit up, thrilled at the thought of the handsome man caring about your wellbeing. However, something cut through your mind, temporarily interrupting your joy.
âDid he get in trouble for fighting that guy?â
âThere was no way in hell that guy was going to be calling the cops after what he tried to do to you so no trouble there and Bucky canât get in trouble with the club seeing as he owns it.â, Nat said, âI found that out on our drive to the hospital because I had the same thought as you.â
Your brain was trying to process all of the information you had just been given, almost feeling overwhelmed by it.
A soft knock on the door turned all of your attention that way. A blonde nurse in baby blue scrubs was leaning her shoulder against the door as she opened it, a large vase of pink roses and tulips clutched in her hands.
âMiss (Y/L/N), these just got delivered for you.â, she smiled at you.
Thor stood and retrieved the flowers from her. Setting them down on the thick window ledge, he plucked the card from the stand it sat on, and handed it to you. You opened the envelope shakily, your body was still not fully recovered from last night.Â
Hey Sweetheart, Let me know when you get out of the hospital, I sent you a text so you have my number. Hope youâre okay. Iâm here if you need anything â Bucky
Your face blossomed with a blush.
âWho are they from?â, Clint asked.
With a wide grin you responded, âBucky.â
A few hours later and the emergency room doctors finally cleared you to go home. Your friends helped you gather your belongings, Clint and Wanda telling you goodbye as you guys reached the parking lot. Thor kindly gave you and Nat a ride back home to your apartment.
After dropping you guys off he yelled from his car window, "Bye guys! Love you both!"
"Bye Thor, we love you too!", you and Nat yelled back to him as you continued up the sidewalk and into your apartment building.
After you crossed the threshold of your home, you immediately headed to your bedroom.
âIâm going to go shower and get this hospital smell off of me.â, you told Nat.
âOkay, let me know if you need anything, Iâll be out here watching TV.â
Entering your room, you immediately shed your dress from the previous night, tossing it into your dirty clothes hamper. You dug through your dresser selecting a pair of baggy grey sweats and one of your favorite oversized shirts.
After grabbing your clothes you head to your bathroom. Entering, you set your outfit and phone down on the sink, going to turn your shower on. You twist the hot water knob to the on position, the sound of trickling water filling the room.
You moved back to the counter grabbing your phone. As you unlocked it you saw a text from a number you didnât have saved.
UNKOWN: Let me know when youâre back home, Iâve been worried about you.Â
UNKOWN: This is Bucky btw.Â
You smiled, saving his name in your phone, and shot him back a text.
Y/N: Iâm back home, still not feeling amazing, but Iâll survive. Thank you for the flowers, theyâre beautiful.
Bucky quickly sent you a response.Â
BUCKY: I hoped they might cheer you up a bit. Y/N: They definitely did. Also thank you for last night, I appreciate it more than you know.Â
The typing bubble popped up and disappeared several times. You closed out of your messages, opening your music streaming app and turning on your favorite playlist. Locking your phone you set it back down on the counter and stepped into the shower.Â
You felt some of the tension in your back slowly fade as warm water trickled down your body. After relaxing in the hot water for what you deemed long enough, you began to wash yourself, scrubbing a little too hard, trying to get the smell of the hospital off of you as well as the metaphorical feeling of Caleb's hands.
Once you felt that you were sufficiently clean, you grabbed a light green towel off the wall, wrapping it around your body.Â
You reached for your phone again.
BUCKY: Iâm just glad you're safe.
You saw that several minutes had passed in between that text and the following ones he sent.
BUCKY: Go to dinner with me? BUCKY: Only if you want to of course. I donât want you to think you have to say yes just because I helped you yesterday.Â
âMen that respect boundaries are so hotâ, you thought to yourself.
Y/N: Of course, I would really like that.Â
You set your phone down again. Drying your hair and doing your skincare. After you finished, you exited the bathroom and flopped down onto your fluffy pink comforter. Exhaustion started taking over you and you crawled under your blankets, snuggling into your pillows.
Your phone buzzed beside your head.
BUCKY: Let me know when youâre free next, I have the perfect place we can go. Y/N: Iâm going to take a nap, but when I wake up Iâll check my schedule and see what days Iâm not doing anything. Bucky: Perfect, sleep well sweetheart, ttyl.
You smiled softly, butterflies forming in your stomach.Â
You reached for your TV remote, turning on a show to play as background noise while you slept. Your eyes closed, feeling very heavy and within minutes you were asleep.
Nat eventually came into your room and woke you up, letting you get a five hour nap in. She had made the two of you dinner, spaghetti and garlic toast. Your stomach grumbled loudly at the thought of food. Laughing, you followed her into the kitchen.
You pulled up your calendar on your phone, seeing when your next day off was, and texting the information to Bucky. Â
Y/N: Just looked and my next day off is Tuesday. BUCKY: Iâll pick you up at 7? Y/N: That works for me :) Iâll send you my address.
After texting him your address you put your phone away, enjoying your dinner with your roommate as you guys watched TV. The two of you made it through several episodes of your show, before Nat started yawning, saying she was going to head to bed. You both went to the kitchen, rising your dishes and headed down the hall into your respective rooms.
You fell asleep, bubbling with excitement over your upcoming date with Bucky.
