. . . Pepe had been trying to act normal all day, but the truth was, he was failing miserably.

He had worked alongside you for weeks now, and every time you laughed at something one of the engineers said or when your eyes sparkled with excitement over a new project, he felt his heart trip over itself.

You were the new intern engineer at Campos, and although everyone knew you were talented and driven, Pepe couldn’t seem to focus on anything other than how you always made him feel a little bit….nervous.

It wasn’t like he was a shy person, well, maybe a little shy. But with you, it was different. You had this way of making everything feel effortless.

You walked into the garage every morning like it was your home, your presence as natural as breathing, while he…fumbled with his tools and overthought every interaction as soon as his eyes landed on you.

He couldn’t even look you in the eye without feeling like he might say something completely ridiculous.

Today was no different. He had been waiting for the right moment to talk to you, to tell you how he felt, but as the hours dragged on, he was still stuck in that same cycle of nerves.

You were sitting across from him at the lunch table, going over notes on the car's performance, your brow furrowed in concentration. He couldn’t help but stare, wondering if you even realized how beautiful you looked when you were focused on something you loved.

Pepe took a deep breath, trying to gather his courage. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words got stuck somewhere between his brain and his tongue.

Just say it, Pepe. Just tell her. He shook his head, feeling ridiculous. No, no, he wasn’t going to say it yet. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe when he wasn’t surrounded by people who could all hear his awkward confession.

He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Across the table, you glanced up, catching his eye for a moment before offering him a small, curious smile. It was enough to send his heart racing.

"Is everything okay?" you asked, your voice gentle.

"Y-yeah! Fine," Pepe said too quickly, a little too loudly. He rubbed his face, wishing he could sink into the ground. "I-sorry. Just… thinking."

You raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further, letting the moment pass. You were back to taking notes, but there was a lightness in the air between the two of you.

That was one thing Pepe loved about you, you never made him feel stupid for being awkward. You seemed to get it, like you saw through his nerves and still liked him anyway.

Time seemed to stretch on for hours. The garage buzzed with the hum of activity, but Pepe was lost in his thoughts, watching you as you focused on adjusting a component on the engine. Every time you smiled or gave a quick laugh to one of the mechanics, his heart did that annoying skip.

He couldn't keep this up forever. It had been weeks, and he still hadn’t said anything about how he felt. Every time you brushed past him or said something kind, his chest tightened, and yet, the words never came out. Just tell her you like her, Pepe.

But then you’d be gone. And that terrified him more than anything.

As the day wrapped up, everyone started packing up, preparing to head home. Pepe lingered behind, watching as you slid on your jacket and checked the last of your notes. He could hear his own heartbeat in his ears, loud and heavy.

He watched you for a moment longer, hesitated, then stood up, making his way toward you. This was it. He was going to do it. He had to.

But just as he was about to speak, you turned around and caught him off guard. "Hey, Pepe," you said, your voice soft but direct, as if you could sense his inner struggle. "You’ve been acting kind of strange today. Everything okay?"

He froze. The words didn’t come. His throat went dry, and the nervous pit in his stomach expanded. Great. She noticed.

You watched him carefully, your expression gentle, but there was a small glimmer of curiosity in your eyes. You tilted your head. "You know, you don’t have to be so nervous around me. You can talk to me about anything."

Pepe’s breath caught in his chest. Anything? You meant it, didn’t you?

"I-" He swallowed, feeling like the room had suddenly gotten too small. He had so many things he wanted to say, things he had practiced in his head for hours, but now that he was here, with you right in front of him, the words evaporated.

You didn’t push him, though. Instead, you gave him a small smile, a knowing look that sent a wave of warmth rushing through him.

"Hey, if you don’t say it now," you said gently, "I might just have to make the first move."

Pepe blinked, his brain finally catching up. Wait… what?

And then, before he could protest, you reached up and cupped his face with your hand. He went completely still, his heart slamming against his ribcage as you leaned in slowly. His mind was a blur, all those nerves, all that hesitation, evaporating in an instant.

And then- your lips were on his.

It wasn’t anything frantic or rushed. Just a soft, gentle kiss, like you had been waiting for him to finally make a move. His body went numb for a moment, his mind spinning.

He could taste the slight hint of coffee on your lips, the softness of the kiss, and for a brief, perfect moment, everything was calm.

You pulled away slowly, your forehead resting against his for just a second. And then, in that quiet space between you, you whispered, "I like you too, Pepe."

The words hung in the air, wrapping around his heart in a way that made everything inside of him soften.

Pepe finally let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding, the tension draining from his body. "You do?"

You laughed softly, pulling back just enough to meet his eyes. "Yeah, I do. I’ve liked you for a while now."

Pepe’s smile was pure relief, his body feeling lighter than it had all day. His hand reached out instinctively, brushing a loose strand of hair behind your ear. "Well… I’m glad. I really like you, too. I’ve just been… waiting for the right moment."

You grinned at him, your eyes warm and understanding. "Well, I think that moment is now, don’t you?"

Pepe nodded, his heart finally settled, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he didn’t need to overthink. He just had you, right there with him, and that was enough.

Everything felt right.

he’s been uncharacteristically soft lately.

not that you’re complaining— of course not.

not when he’s this close to you right now, his body heavy and warm between your legs, face buried into the crook of your neck.

out of instinct, you reach out and play with his hair, gently massaging his scalp, coaxing out a low groan from him, his chest rumbling with the sound as he shifts slightly to give you better access to the rest of his head.

it must’ve been the separation, you think. people say that anyway, that distance makes the heart grow fonder or something. it must be true, if the time away has resulted in this.

why else would he allow himself to be this close to you right now? when he’s done nothing but try to set boundaries this whole time, citing PR reasons and his career.

it’s a little strange, to be honest. having him this close to you. you wonder what it must be like to be able to just casually touch him like this, often. has anyone ever had the privilege?

a deep inhale from him snaps you out of your thoughts, as he lifts his head to look at your face, gaze still a little hazy with sleep. he blinks once. twice. before laying his head back down, sighing as he says quietly, “you smell nice.”

he whispers it as though it’s a secret, and you find yourself at a loss for words, only capable of mustering out a simple, “oh.”

the hand previously playing with his hair stills, and you let it drop off the couch, only for him to look back up at you, an almost panicked look in his eyes.

“don’t stop,” he pleads, reaching out after your hand. “it feels nice.”

you oblige, lifting your hand back up, a little awkwardly this time, as your elbow accidentally hits his shoulder. he jolts away, tensing up before relaxing again.

“shit- sorry,” you apologise, the words leaving you in a hurried mess.

he shakes his head slightly, his hair tickling your chin with the motion. “no, don’t apologise. i’m just a little sore.”

you wince. “sorry, maybe i should’ve woken you up to sleep on the bed instead.”

he’s quick to correct you, gently enveloping your hand in his as he speaks up again, “not from you. just— from training. it’s been brutal lately.” a pause. “i like this.”

you blink a few times, processing his words, before choosing to change the topic instead. “do you have any training today?”

he hums in response, shaking his head. “no, do you? have plans today, i mean.”

"no."

there's an even longer pause.

its awkward, and you want to squeeze your eyes shut and pretend to be asleep, the air heavy with the desire to ask the other for something that seems like too much.

he finally breaks the ice. "maybe we could hang out then." he lifts his head to look at you again, eyes looking at you almost a little expectantly.

a few seconds pass and then, finally— you nod, inhaling deeply. "yes, okay. we can... hang out. of course."

you're grateful for him, to even be this close to him right now, in more ways than one. despite the awkwardness at times, he's sweet to you, and consistently kind.

you're so wrapped up in your thoughts that you almost miss the way the corners of his lips quirk up into a small smile at your response, and you feel a gentle smile making its way onto your face in return. oh.

you're grateful for him, for you, and for everything in between.
