I did a molding and metal melting lab today and when returning home after class, my twin took the little metal smiley face that I so lovingly made and filed down and immediately asked me “is this made out of lead?”

Then, without waiting for a response immediately put it into her mouth, spit it out, went “Well, it’s mainly lead acetate that’s sweet so I don’t really know if it’s lead or not”

The composition originally was going to be a lot different (had two in mind) where the Red King’s involvement would’ve been more prominent. Went with this one simply cuz it was just more fun to experiment, where the negative space is made front and centre focus :]

Whennnn picking out the plants ddint think for a second about symbolism- and going off of just ANY flower for flower language would have been too big of a selection pool… So in respects to SL environmental setting - native Australian plants it was.

-The golden wattle trees by its abundance and have benefited Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders for thousands of years to create various markers and tools. The plant survives harsh droughts, and its seeds have a coating strong enough that can be salvageable beyond bushfires.

-as a signifier of Spring and new beginnings hence rebirth, the golden wattle to me was also very thematically fitting for a season like Secret Life :]

-I never looked into what Illawarra flame trees (the flowers of the coat my SL!Bdubs design is wearing) before until today.. and I quote “Regains confidence and self-approval, able to make commitments with the strength of self-reliance. Clarity in life and ability to adapt to all situations. Secure enough to express and communicate true feelings. To be beautiful and strong ” [SOURCE: Australian Bushflowers] which…. Ok damn. There’s also alcohol in it.

-Eucalyptus trees in Indigenous Australian culture represent the division between the underworld, the Earth and heaven.

The selection of plants while don’t represent Bloodhounds together - but more of what Martyn and Bdubs are individually, they’re interesting in the things they have in common what they represent. And the differences they go about this loyalty throughout the seasons and why they devote - especially in LimL and SL.. Fascinating stuff.

Something I miss from earlier eras of the creative side of the internet was things just being unabashedly low-budget. Just all unashamedly amateur, unprofessional, ‘I don’t own a good camera but I have a story to tell you’, ‘I can’t afford a good mic but I have a song to sing for you,’ ‘I don’t have any kind of background in editing or lighting and I only just picked up this guitar last Tuesday but here’s an entire musical me and my friends wrote about our favourite book, we filmed it on a potato and put it up on YouTube in ten minute segments because we thought it was pretty funny.’

stardew valley au where joel and skizz are new residents to pelican town (hermit town?). joel just inherited a large farm from his late grandfather and skizz is moving in with his old friend after reconnecting with him and wanting a fresh start. and the townspeople are like, kinda weird.

bdubs is fine enough - he’s a sweet man with a fun personality and he’s the local builder, but it’s almost frightening how fast he constructs new buildings when joel needs them. pearl, their resident postmaster, is also pretty normal other than the fact that skizz never seems to be awake early enough to catch her delivering mail. scar is lovely but he’s never available when joel wants another chicken. the mayor, xisuma, is pleasant too, if a little eccentric at times, but he doesn’t really seem to do much in town.

for the most part, skizz is settling in well. he’s moved in with impulse, who runs the local blacksmith in town, and he gets along well with most of the local townspeople. he’s started spending his evenings at the local saloon listening to ren regale the patrons with fantastical tales while he and stress serve up food and drinks, and he finds himself growing close with cleo, the local sculptor. he even gets a new wardrobe from hypno free of charge, and sometimes helps cub out with his totally scientific studies and creations.

skizz also joins forces with beef (who helps to supply the local general store that xb and keralis run) in terrorising the local manager of the corporate chain grocery store that no one likes. doc is a terrible manager but would make a fun supervillain (according to joe hills, the bookseller who appears once in a blue moon but seems to know doc more than anyone in town).

joel, on the other hand, seems to only be interacting with the strangest residents in town. he discovers the adventurer’s guild after only a couple weeks. false promises to give him prizes if he can kill enough monsters, which is not something joel had expected to be doing when he pictured farm life, but here he is. he stumbles upon a travelling cart one day, and the man inside insists he’s a knight from a faraway land, that he risked his life to make it all the way here to sell his wares. it’s all stuff joel can get cheaper elsewhere.

he’s pretty sure the local doctor has no real medical training, but then he passes out while fighting monsters and he wakes up completely fine, so zedaph probably knows what he’s doing. maybe. when joel isn’t passing out he sometimes makes trips to the library-slash-museum, which is probably almost completely empty because mumbo, who begs joel for anything to display, looks like he’s never fought a duggie in his life. eventually mumbo gives joel a key to the sewers, which are way cooler than they have any right to be, and that’s where he finds jevin’s secret sewer shop. jevin lives in town. he just also has a shop hidden underground. joel has stopped asking questions by now.

and then there are the three who live by the beach. etho spends most of his time tinkering around the fishing hut or hovering around bdubs, but sometimes he drives the bus to the desert. only sometimes. there might be something under his mask. no one knows for sure. gem runs the fish shop most days and she claims she’s a sailor, but joel has never seen a single working boat around despite all the ocean. she can also hold her breath underwater for an uncannily long amount of time, like, scarily so, and will sometimes disappear for a few days and return with an abundance of treasures. joel has never seen her leave by boat. grian fishes a lot and runs the shop when gem can’t, and he sometimes talks as though the sea can speak to him. skizz has caught him staring into space for extended periods of time. one time he waded into the water and just stood there, head down, muttering to himself.

apparently there used to be a lighthouse but “it’s gone now”. gem says if they ask bdubs nicely enough maybe they can build another one, but she and grian are banned from build requests after the last incident with their pet snails (joel has never seen the snails, but scar complains about them enough to convince him they’re real).

there also might be some kind of wizard who lives in the creepy tower in the woods. skizz has heard he’s the one who helps maintain the power in the valley, and joel’s convinced he hallucinated seeing him once until he recieves a letter from the wizard himself, and visits him only to find that the strange fire-creature he saw that one time was, in fact, tango, who is human for the most part, he just sets himself on fire sometimes.

Another reason I dislike Les Mis adaptations that make Jean Valjean constantly openly angry/violent is because they miss that Jean Valjean is not allowed to be angry. The fact he is forbidden from expressing anger is, I argue, actually a very important part of his character in the novel!

One of the subtler political messages of the story is that some people are given freedom to express anger, while others are forced to be excessively meek and conciliatory in order to survive.

Wealthy conservatives like Monsieur Gillenormand can “fly into rages” every five minutes and have it treated as an endearing quirk. Poor characters like Fantine or Jean Valjean must be constantly polite and ingratiating to “their superiors” at all times, even in the face of mockery and violence, or else they will be subjected to punishment. If Gillenormand beats his child with a stick, it’s a silly quirk; if Fantine beats a man harassing her, she is sentenced to months in prison.

(Thenardier and Javert are interesting examples of this too. Thenardier acts superficially polite and ingratiating to his wealthy “superiors” while insulting them behind their backs. Javert, meanwhile, is completely earnest in his mindless bootlicking. But I could write an entire other post on this.)

The point is that….Jean Valjean has to be submissive and self-effacing, or he puts himself in danger. He can’t afford to be angry and make scenes, or he will be punished. The only barrier between himself and prison is his ability to be so “courteous” that no one bothers to pry into his past.

Jean Valjean is excessively polite to people, in the way that you’re excessively polite to an armed cop who pulls you over for speeding when you secretly have a few illegal grams of marijuana in the your car trunk. XD It’s politeness built on fear, is what I mean. It’s politeness built on a desperation to make a powerful person avoid looking too closely at you.

It’s politeness at gunpoint.

Jean Valjean has also spent nineteen years living in an environment where any expression of anger could be punished with severe violence. That trauma is reflected in the overly cautious reserved way he often speaks with people (even people who are kind and would never actually hurt him.)

So adaptations that have Jean Valjean boldly having shouting matches with people in public and beating cops half to death without worrying about the repercussions just make go like “???”

Because that’s part of what’s fascinating about Jean Valjean to me? On one hand, he is a genuinely kind compassionate person, who cares deeply about other people and behaves kindly out of altruism. But on the other hand, he was also “beaten into submission” by prison, and forced into adopting conciliatory bootlicking behaviors in order to survive. And it can sometimes be hard to tell when he is being kind vs. when he is being “polite” — when he is speaking and acting out of earnest compassion vs. when he is speaking and acting out of fear.

The TL;DR is that I think it’s important that even though Jean Valjean is very (justifiably) angry about the injustice that was inflicted on him, his anger is harshly policed at all times— by other people, and by himself. He has been told his anger is wrong/selfish so often that he believes it. His anger takes weirder more unhealthy forms because he has no safe outlet for it. His rage at society becomes a possessiveness towards Cosette and silent hatred of Marius, but primarily it becomes useless self-destructive constant hatred of himself. And while I might be phrasing this wrong, I think that’s what’s interesting about Jean Valjean’s relationship with anger— the way his justified fury at his own mistreatment gets warped into more and more unhealthy forms by the way he’s forced to constantly repress it.

The way we discuss prophecy in fandom is genuinely fascinating. GRRM spends so much time showing how different characters have different interpretations of the same thing based on their own cultural contexts. He says that prophecy is tricky to navigate through multiple characters, showing that even the most careful practitioner can get almost everything wrong and fall victim to their own fallacies (see Mel). So tell me why the main takeaway for large parts of this fandom is “prophecy stupid, it doesn’t matter”. My brothers and sisters in R’hllor, GRRM didn’t invent multiple characters (three of whom are main POVs!!) who can see the future for this to be the conclusion. This is a FANTASY series. Please I’m begging, let us be serious 🥲

First of all I love your comics!!! I binge read them all, and I periodically come back to binge read them again lmao. And in your comics there’s moments when I’m certain all Law is thinking is “OH SHIT HE’S HOT!!!!!!?!!!” But not so many moments for Luffy (which is understandable because he’s Luffy.)

All that’s to say- do you think there’s anything Law does that makes Luffy go “OH SHIT HE’S HOT!!?!!” or some variation of the feeling??

Sometimes I question if people actually understand Keefe’s character. If you look at his family’s dynamic, coping mechanisms, and age. Girl bffr. I don’t understand how people can’t understand him or mischaracterize him when all the evidence is RIGHT THERE. Look at his parents. Look at his relationship with his parents. Reread his memories and emotions he had for those. Remember that one scene of Alden saying he was proud of Keefe and Cassius was AMUSED by it. Remember how Keefe thought his mother was the lesser of two evils just to find out he was wrong. He thought he could at least put some faith in his mother because she couldn’t have been as bad as his father just to find out she’s a terrorist? That crisis is HUGE. He just found out he’s ALONE. He doesn’t have any parents to go to. He might as well be an orphan.

And don’t get me started on the identity crisis. You’re telling me if you were 14 years old. You just found out your mother is not only a terrorist that has been using you to hunt down your friends, but she also has to life she’s PLANNED FOR YOU. And no matter where he runs to he is FORCED to be what his mother planned. And the only parent you have left is a narcissist father who projects his own insecurities into you? Wouldn’t you feel trapped? Wouldn’t you feel alone?

For years his entire life has been something his parents have controlled. His grades, his social life, and the way he has to present himself. Everything he is has been controlled by his parents. I don’t understand how people don’t understand that THATS WHY HE LASHES OUT. That’s why he has this alter ego and acts all cool. He’s trying to be the opposite his parents want him to be. He’s trying to crawl and scratch out of the suffocating life his parents trapped him in. But it doesn’t matter because his parents don’t care. They keep poking and pulling him down. They’re messing with him psychologically and if you can’t see that REREAD THE SERIES. Matter a fact reread Unlocked and Unraveled because I don’t think you guys READ IT. This kid is drowning in insecurity, fear and trauma. He doesn’t know who to be. He doesn’t know what to do because he’s scared of hurting everyone that he rather hurt himself.

And to honest idk why people are shocked he runs away from his problems. Did you guys not notice how he forced himself to always be at the Vackers because he didn’t want to be home? He genuinely saw the Vackers as a family for him. A family he always WANTED. A family that he knew no matter what he’ll never be able to physically be apart of it. He was always running away. It’s the only thing he knows how to do. It’s how he copes because he’s scared. He feels like his presence, his existence, and his life is dangerous and unworthy to be around others.

He has spent majority of his life alone. He has had to fight his own battles by himself. He has had to deal with his own emotions by himself. He’s dealt with his struggles BY HIMSELF. He doesn’t know how to listen to people because he’s not USED TO IT. He’s not used to people actually caring about him. He’s SCARED to let people do that. If you can’t see that, that’s INSANE. “He’s so insecure and attaches himself to Sophie”… well maybe because Sophie has been someone who has fought Keefe back? Sophie has FOUGHT for Keefe. Keefe FIGHTS for Sophie. He is attached to her because she sees him. She can feel his emotions even if he doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t need to use her abilities to know. She knows him.

He attaches to her and says things like “Don’t hate me” not because he’s being manipulative. If you think that I’m going to wack you. He knows he’s self sabotaging. He knows he’s self destructing. He knows he’s a mess. It’s the self awareness that’s makes him scared. He cares about Sophie SO BAD but he can’t help escape what he knows. He can’t escape his coping mechanism. He can’t escape his past. He can’t escape the mess his parents have made him into. He’s scared of the only person that sees him to give up on him. He’s scared of Sophie giving up on him. Is it a selfish thing to say? Oh absolutely. But he’s not saying it for the reasons people keep villainizing him for.

Keefe is a 14 year old teenage boy with no parents. Nobody to properly guide him. He is a teenage boy who is traumatized emotionally and mentally. He is a teenage boy who is scared of himself. He is a teenaged boy that makes mistake. He is a child that is doing whatever he knows to survive. He is a teenage boy who loves people the way he wishes people loved him. He holds onto people the way he wishes people did for him. He is a teenage boy that has jealousy in his heart because he didn’t want a hard life. He doesnt want to be the mess his parents made him into. He wants to be loved. He wants to be cared for. He is a teenage boy who needs people to ground him, to be patient with him, he needs people who not only love him but understand him.

Some Athena thoughts and headcanons for the ‘Diomedes goes to Ithaca AU’

Headcanon that Athena moves around completely quietly (like how owls hunt). So, Telemachus meeting Athena for the first time he gets the shit scared out of him. Diomedes by now knows the tells of Athena being here (and he has the magic eyes) so he’s the one basically warning Telemachus if Athena is in proximity

Telemachus: are you even listening???

Diomedes staring intently at the dodgy looking owl (Athena) in the tree: …yeah

Athena is very much still cool aunt. But I wanna characterise her as a little more mischievous (which could be interpreted as cunning ig) than she probably is in the original mythos. She keeps a close eye on both Telemachus and Diomedes. Most specifically Telemachus! While she cannot reveal to him that Odysseus is alive directly (she cannot incur the wrath of her uncle just yet), she does help him in starting his little Telemachy. It helps boosts his confidence and helps reassure him that maybe his father is alive. HOWEVER, the sudden disappearance of Telemachus causes the stress meters of Diomedes and Penelope to exponentially rise. And Athena finds this a little funny, so she still withholds the information from them.

Telemachus: Athena… sometimes I wonder if father is dead :(

Athena is keeping this family very blessed. She is the patron goddess of both Odysseus and Diomedes, and I like to imagine maybe in a more subtle way to Penelope too (I mean… she’s smart, beautiful, AND she can weave???). She’s much closer to Telemachus in this AU than in the original Odyssey, but not like in the way of EPIC?? She keeps her distance from him nonetheless bcs she’s a god and whatnot, but him being close with Diomedes, I imagine Athena has more of an excuse to be around Telemachus growing up.
