Ancient Roman Poets on a Modern Date
Catullus (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
If you meet him before Lesbia, he will be charming, eloquent, and happy to go wherever you like, although his funds could be limited. Even so, he'll make sure you both enjoy yourselves. Theater or concert tickets in the plebian--nosebleed--section, for instance. If you meet him after Lesbia, there is a possibility he will spend the entire time trauma-dumping about his ex. If you also have one to complain about, this could be cathartic.
Vergil (Publius Vergilius Maro)
He takes you out to his beehive dressed in full bee-keeping gear to introduce you to his bees and then goes inside, where you sample different varieties of honey drizzled over fruit. He is sweet, but does talk about fields and bees a lot.
Ovid (Gaius Valerius Catullus)
Let's be honest. This might be more of a Tinder or Grindr hookup than a date. However, it's possible you met at a theater, race track, parade, or seaside resort. If you are aro/ace, run away. If you aren't and you are interested in seeing if he truly is proficient as a teacher of love, stick around. Don't expect him to be faithful, however. And although his manners are perfect, remember that it's an art and a game to him, so guard your heart.
Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus)
He'll take you out for a night of expensive dining and pay for it solely because the friend of a friend that owns the place owes him. He is charming company and can get you into any exclusive club or private experience you want to go to, but will expect reciprocated favors. Also, he turns on the charm, but absolutely expects to be complimented in return.
Sulpicia
She plays hard to get initially, not wanting to be too obvious with her affection. The first date will be YOUR choice. Pick well and she'll follow that with a candlelit dinner and eternal devotion. She does have expensive taste, however, and she would absolutely report you to her scary uncle if you break her heart.
Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis)
He takes you on a picnic. Despite this being in the country, he'll opt for fine wine and gourmet food. He's easy to talk to, funny, and catty with his gossip. However, he'll also go on about his childhood in the country and how he went hunting and fishing and how he misses the simple country life. (All while sipping from an expensive goblet.)
Livy (Titus Livius)
He takes you to a museum and acts as your tour guide throughout the entire thing. Who knew that your date would double as a living and breathing audio tour? You're supposed to eat at the museum cafe, but you may not make it there before it closes... If you're a fan of history, you're in for a treat.
Iullus Antonius
Iullus is a huge romantic and just as charming as his famous father. He will show up with flowers and take you on a date in a small, undiscovered restaurant and to a lot of cute places that are off the beaten path. Whether you hit it off romantically or not, he's the kind of guy who could be your ride or die. (Spoiler alert, when he says he's your ride or die, he's extremely serious. 💀)
Albius Tibullus
When he falls, he falls hard. He takes you on a date in an orchard. This includes picking grapes and then tasting wines. If the date is before he was entranced with one of the lovers he wrote about, all is well. If not, he might get a little teary eyed about his past love(s). He is polite, sweet, attentive, and apologetic though.
Juvenal (Decimus Junius Juvenalis)
He takes you to an expensive restaurant and makes it clear he is only paying for HIS meal. The entire time he criticizes everyone else in the restaurant for being posers and judges them based upon appearance, status, and gender. His date is not a safe place for anyone who doesn't fit his definition of traditional values. Definitely talks about kids these days and the degradation of society.
#inspired orginally by @just-late-roman-republic-things#ancient rome#ancient roman memes#classics memes#ancient roman poets#okay yes I added Iullus because I feel bad for him and Julia and I wish some of his poetry had survived#and yes some scholars believe sulpicia isn't actually a real historical figure or did not write the poems but I wanted representation#and personally Iullus or Virgil for first choices#tho I love catullus and would also pick him#national poetry month

I advise you to stop sharing your dreams with people who try to hold you back, even if they’re your parents. Because, if you’re the kind of person who senses there’s something out there for you beyond whatever it is you’re expected to do - if you want to be EXTRA-ordinary - you will not get there by hanging around a bunch of people who tell you you’re not extraordinary. Instead, you will probably become as ordinary as they expect you to be. Kelly Cutrone

"A dyke, according to geology, is a sheet of magma born in a fracture. Dykes are best understood as the veins of a volcano, coursing hot and varicose toward the surface to erupt. Because of this, dykes are always younger than the body of rock in which they’ve made their home. Born differently than the mother rock, they make their presence known in rebel coloration: black against white, striped against mottled, crystal against sand. Geologists consider dykes intrusive formations, in part because they were formed underground until exposed."
-From Dyke (Geology) by Sabrina Imbler
#Holy fucking shit#I went and looked up some fiction that deals with geology#Like journey to the center of the earth#This popped up and I was immediately sold by the description alone#It's not a long book but I'm on like page 3#And the whole thing is intertwining geology with queerness#And I feel like I'm falling into the exact place I want to be#To bring science and queerness and writing together#Fuck this is so cool#Sdk reads something#Obligatory 'terves get fucked' addition#This book/set of prose poems also grapples with colonialism and dating as an Asian woman#Went and double checked - as a mixed race person who makes a lot of cutting observations on 'yellow people'#Of which they consider themself one at least in this first book of theirs

life is cruel and painful but it is mine. i built it bleeding raw and starving, full of spite and sheer determination
i walked out of hell, i cried while dragging myself out of hell, i climbed out of hell with my bitten down nails sinking into the edges
and it wasn't so i could let another person cut me off at my knees, blunt machete in hand while i watch quietly
i am young starving and have nothing to lose. i will not stop until i get what i deserve

a lot of people carry around an assumption that a work of art which is “good” in certain ways is going to be received pleasurably (i’m using an extremely broad definition of pleasure here that encompasses things like art-induced moral discomfort or sadness don’t @ me) by, like, people at large. this comes up in two different areas of interest for me: on the one hand, People Having Takes On The Internet; on the other hand, discussions about pedagogy, particularly around writing. i have, i mean, a lot of different thoughts about this - still marveling over the interview with a book critic and harvard philosophy doctoral student i read where she casually espoused the belief that if people were simply taught better what makes art good they would like bad art less, which continues to strike me as one of the stupidest things i’ve ever seen a person i temporarily had a positive opinion of say - but like in pedagogical considerations for example something i had started to wonder about when i left the classroom was like… our writing instruction relied a lot on modeling. like, “notice how this published author does this thing; see how i try to do it also; now you try.” and i think that an unarticulated/unrecognized problem in that sort of modeling is that it kind of assumes the student finds pleasure in say a thorough visual description - that the student agrees “yes this part of what makes the book good.” (an adult can probably choose to learn craft lessons from a book they dislike - but i think that’s a tall order for a seven year old.) but not all of them do, and i picked description specifically because it’s something plenty of adult readers dislike as well - “too much description” is a common goodreads complaint! to me this is viscerally sort of insane because what are you even reading for then? but the answer is that they’re reading for different reasons than i am and i’ve never heard an argument i found compelling in favor of the idea that there are objectively better or worse things to seek from art (an area of life that quite literally doesn’t matter, which is precisely what gives it meaning, IMO). and also a surprising number of people very deep into art generally or of a particular kind seem ignorant of or opposed to the idea that, for example, someone who cares about a medium as an art form is probably going to have different criteria than a person who doesn’t care and just sometimes wants to go to the movies or see a book, and this is actually normal and not a problem to be solved. which i find strange. no real conclusion here except maybe an argument for spending more writing time in elementary school on things like learning what a complete sentence is and how to write one, which is a skill that will prove valuable regardless of personal tastes.
#smth smth about progressive educators being very about nurturing student voice#but presuming that voice fits certain particulars#which is not to say i am opposed to ‘let’s all learn to do this thing’ as a writing pedagogy#and i think the idea that ‘different writing calls for different things’ is a good one to teach#but like let’s be clear eyed about what we’re doing….#the year i taught the poetry unit in first grade i tried to get around this by being like#‘you all have to at least try all the things i’m showing you. but then you can do what you want’#bc i was like well i am simply not going to teach the children that all good poems use similes. i shan’t.#unmentioned here ofc is that it’s hard to develop personal taste in books if you can’t read all the words in them 🙃#skill teaching is part of the path to creativity not its enemy…..

Ghosts
-
If you are still lingering here,
Longing for any indication
That I think of you-
Let me save you the trouble.
I don't.
If you are still burning
From the flame of my laughter;
If you are looking for a reason
To make me the villain,
Let me give it to you
On a platter.
You were cruel.
I will not beg for love,
You insisted you offer freely.
Let the world be the reason
You collapse in on yourself.
Let me be all the darkness
That you insist
Has your name on it.
I.
Don't.
Care.
When you speak my name again,
And you will.
You will whimper my name again.
Let it be heavy with blame.
But let any trace of hope
Burn out.
Take accountability of your venom,
And leave me to my fire.
Shiver in my absence,
But do not long for my heat.
If you are still lingering here,
Searching for any trace of you,
This will be the last of it.
I do not miss you.

good evening, all. it is May the 25th. our lilacs are blooming, just as the ones at the Watch House did. and I am thinking about remembrance of the fallen, and GNU, and the love in commemoration.
y'know, I read Night Watch… oh, maybe a year ago and some months ago. and the lilac symbolism, the remembrance of the Watch, has always struck me with the depth of the emotion of it, the tangibility of it in the flowers. but I wasn't aware that today was the day until I saw commemorative posts, all that gorgeous artwork and more, on my dash.
I was also not aware, until now, that fans commemorated the day not only because of the book reference, but in support of Terry Pratchett and of those with Alzheimer's. which knocked me over a bit because of course, of course the group that would use GNU to honor him would do that. and… I've been thinking about GNU a lot, lately, and this caught me again.
I read Going Postal a bit ago, and reread it recently. both times, the parts about GNU made me tear up. this idea of the names, the memories, the lives of the clacks workers who dedicated themselves to ensuring that people heard each other's voices—all those names spoken again and again and again by that which they poured their souls into, winging along in the air as they could not, an eternal reminder that they were loved—how could that not touch a person's heart?
when I found out that fans online used it to memorialize him, I damn well cried. hell, I still tear up just thinking about it. do you know, there's a code for an HTTP header "X-Clacks-Overhead: GNU Terry Pratchett" written by Reddit users to put in webpages, where it goes unseen by the average user? and in 2015, when Netcraft took a survey, there were eighty-four thousand websites using it? it's eight years later—how many thousands upon thousands of websites have this now, do you think? how many little cables of light has his name flown along, now? how many times?
that alone is absurdly and unimaginably lovely in its own right, but… there's something else to it. there's something about remembering with the lilac sprigs every year, just as Vimes and those who were there remembered their dead. something about how, when we take up our lilac sprigs, we carry a little piece of the characters in our hearts, too. I kept trying to put my finger on why that makes me tear up the way it does. the conclusion I came to is this:
what greater way to honor a writer is there, but to honor them the way they did the characters they poured their heart and soul into? what better way to say we know you and you are not forgotten and your work and words and gifts to the world are held in our hearts forever than to remember them by their own words, their own vision? how else could we say you embodied all the good you believed in and wished to see in the world, but to memorialize them after the little pieces of their soul they wrapped in ink and put upon the page?
it is a knowing of the writer, to remember them in their way. it is not a worn-out faceless platitude, but a reminder that their work has been read and will continue to be, that the characters and world they loved enough to bring to life last just as their name does. such remembrance is warm and loving and delights in their memory even as it grieves.
and now Pratchett's name has been written in his tradition, over and over and over, across the vast plane of the Internet, where it will—with any luck—continue to fly for generations to come.
there is no way to truly express the beauty of that… but perhaps we can catch a glimpse of it in the lilacs, both ours and the Watch's.
#the glorious 25th of may#night watch#gnu terry pratchett#discworld#I cannot express how much I love that our lilacs bloom at the same time as they do in the books#also I dearly wanted to include this little fact in my accidental monologue but it didn't fit. so in the tags it goes:#GNU Terry Pratchett is ALSO a Minecraft splash text#which is just. aaaaaaaaaaah of course a game with something like the End Poem would do that but aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah#I have many feelings on this and a decent summary of a lot of them is about the beauty of how humanity remembers and loves our dead#and also just... the love. the love that can be held for someone you never met#but whose writing and words can pierce your heart in the best of ways#and the love for characters--for the best of them are these little shards of the writer's soul that they decided to share#because that's really the nature of writing. baring your soul and your self to others in those persons you breathe to life on the page#and then sharing it with others just in hopes that it might ring true and inspire them#give them insight#help them in ways no one else could because only YOU could write that character and share that part of yourself#and by gods if Pratchett isn't among the best at that then I don't know who is#anyway. I have feelings and I accidentally turned them into a monologue whoo#have a good evening all

Sometimes I just get the most nonsensical crossover ideas.
Doki Doki Literature Club! Milgram Edition
Does this make sense? No.
Was it fun to draw? Yes!
And that's what's important!
#milgram#mikoto kayano#haruka sakurai#shidou kirisaki#fuuta kajiyama#doki doki literature club au#i think this might be the first time i've properly drawn shidou#the reason it's only the boys is because i wanted to make a separate version for the girls#sorry for the lack of kazui there's only 4 characters in ddlc#minus the protagonist but nobody cares about him#fun fact! shidou's shoes are the same purple as his prisoner color while everyone else's is blue#just like how monika's shoes are different from everyone else's#fuuta ties his jacket around waist to emulate his Bring It On knight outfit (i really hope his T3 outfit does this)#i wanted to fuck his tie up (to imply he doesn't know how to tie a tie) but then realized that he'd probably be the type of person to#watch a tutorial to tie it once and then just loosen it to remove it and never untie the knot#this was originally a sketch but i got a bit carried away and colored it#I wonder how obvious my struggle with haruka's pose is#his upper legs look off but i don't want to keep changing it over and over again#random thought! Natsuki's first 2 poems actually sort of fit Fuuta I think#i can imagine him writing Eagles Can Fly#Both Sayori and Mikoto are also people pleasers and depressed so yeah#and Shidou gives me a Monika vibes IDK why

The thing about Palamedes is that based on his overall being genuinally a good person vibe I do think he only endangered Telemachus because he was pretty sure Odysseus was lying. After all he knew Odysseus well enough to draw this conclusion.
Wich does open the idea for my man being completly heartbroken and lowkey hated in a reality where he was actually wrong and Odysseus had fully went mad for reals. No one has a good time at all. Also whatever revenge plan Penelope would have in mind would be worse than Odysseus for sure (although I do think Palamedes would fully be "no I do deserve that one actually" after killing her son in front of her and ending Odysseus whole disnasty to prove a point he didn't even prove).
Bonus points if Ody went mad the only way he would via angering a god and the curse is lifted after he kills his son and Agamemnon fully not reading the room is like "cool that was fixed, let's go to war" while everyone else is in shock.
#this is silly#but like i fully belive being wrong never even crossed palamedes head#and that's why it would broke him completly if he was#and as someone who while fully thinks he deserved it also recognizes he was a way better person than odysseus and lowkey likes him#i want the angst#and the ithacan royal couple revenge + odysseus own self hate#just penelope deserves her chance on doing murder#but for real I really love Socrates speach about Palamedes#on the other hand is kinda funny how he is like#even tho odysseus won palamedes poems are better and more popular#and only the odyssey survived#we can't even say if it was true cause we don't have any epic to palamedes#palamedes#me writing random angst ideas for no reason?#odysseus#tagamenon#the epic cicle#penelope#troyan war#Agamenon#also i fully agree with odysseus not caring about how sure palamedes was he still endeagered his baby

I'm exhausted from missing you. It feels like this is never ending.
I've been here before and will continue to stay here until I can learn to finally let go. I just don't know how long I can keep pushing forward like you mean nothing to me.
I don't get how you don't even think of what we had, how it was so easy to forget and let go.
I am sick to my stomach, and so desperately want peace again.

I want to get a new tattoo And a yellow chiffon dress A lifetime supply of melon soda And a new denim jacket that fits
I don’t want anyone to tell me “You make me a better person” I don’t want to have to teach you I just want to be someone you love
I want to be able to pay rent I want to go live with my best friend And just be someone in their twenties In a place where nobody else knows them
I want Hozier to read one of my poems And say that he thinks it’s nice ‘Cause I think I could ride that high For maybe the rest of my life
I want my mom to tell me she’s proud of me And to tell my sister I love her I want flowers on my birthday And someone to really care
There’s so many things in the world And really I just want a few But though it’s hard to leave the rest I think I’ll be ok If I just get another tattoo
