It's so cool to at least know something of several languages. If I'm reading something simple, like comments under President Zelensky's posts on Instagram, I can at least get thr gist of some comments if they're in German, Spanish, even French to a degree bc I've absorbed some through reading classic books plus it's Latin based. I can also understand some basic Ukrainian now. I love to be able to read a different alphabet. I can't get over it-- what was complete nonsensical code before is now coherent-- I can at least sound it out if I don't know the meaning, and i can read any city signs.

So I just finished reading a book about the Armenian Genocide (The book is called 'The Knock At The Door' and it's by Margaret Ajemian Ahnert).
I have no words, I knew the Armenian Genocide was horrifying but this book made me realize just how horrifying it was. I literally wanted to throw up, that's how horrified I was.
And the fact that Azerbaijan and Turkey refuse to acknowledge what happened. I have no words to describe my anger and disgust. You know what happened and yet you refuse to recognize it.
This book definitely helped me get a better understanding of the Armenian Genocide and how horrifying it was, and I can safely say that I'm glad I read it.
(Note: 'Horrifying' doesn't even begin to describe the Armenian Genocide, it was the only word I could think of when I made this post)

Nah but turkish dubs are so funny. Like we are rlly good w lip syncing and casting but the translations holy shit 💀 the translators def dont understand certain sayings & idioms and just translate it literally and its SO obvious. Its still funny tho. Especially when they say stuff w god in it because it sounds so unnatural in turkish.
For example "for god's sake" in turkish would be "tanrı aşkına" which is how they dub it but its soo funny because we practically never use "tanrı" and idk i crack up everytime i hear it jwjdhwhdjxh

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

My native language is really really gendered (more than english) and honestly I don't care either, since I was little I always used the male thank you (my language has male/female words for thank you) despite being a girl just because I like the sound of it better. Grammatical gender honestly is just important for grammar, it shouldn't have the importance to define of personal identity.
i completely agree and i find it crazy that in some languages you say the same thing in different ways for different genders like i don't think that's needed lmao

Practiced Dutch after like a year, since I want to casually learn some other languages. I've learned it's nice to even know just a little of a language. To see what it's like, how it's unique, perhaps even understand some things when you see or hear them
