I just found out that Ernst Daniël Smid, who played Javert in the first Dutch cast of Les Mis (Amsterdam, 1991), was also the singing voice of Frollo in the Dutch dub of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Dutch also has WC which is the main word for toilet here. A kinda funky one is that we say ‘appen’ which is a verb that comes from the noun ‘app’ and means texting.

We also say flat to mean appartement complex and lift for an elevator

I’m sure there’s more, because Dutch people love to use English words, but I’m coming up blank right now

@ people in non-English speaking countries, does your language use things that “come from English” that are just… not actually used widely in English at all?

Like some places in E and SE Asia will abbreviate “WC” for restroom, especially for English translation, but I don’t know a single person in the English speaking world who still calls a bathroom a water closet, and I’ve never even heard of it abbreviated to WC even though it’s obvious how this came around

learning another language is always beautiful, no matter how long it takes. like, what do you mean you are crying because you had to read a sentence twice to get it, when at the beginning you had to do it five times? kicking yourself because you had to listen to an audio at .75x to understand it fully, when two months ago you could barely understand one or two words, even at your second try? getting mad because you had to research how to spell a word, when a few days back you didn't even know how to pronounce it? hell, that's amazing. keep going. you'll get there.
