i think this was the first use of this meme format, but if not, it's still a good example of one

the movie insidious (2010) is about a child who falls into a mysterious coma after his family begins to notice strange ghostly happenings in their new home. they later find out that the kid is astral projecting (his soul is leaving his body and traveling to a different dimension, one populated only by the dead)

the joke i made is because this movie has a somewhat similar plot to frozen pines, which i never knew until i watched the movie the other day. but if we acknowledge that insidious exists as a movie in the frozen pines universe, we can imagine that caroline, beth, and danny might have seen insidious themselves, while their own son was also in an unexplainable coma with strange ghostly happenings around him. in which case, beth would dismiss it as fiction, danny would get a tiny bit paranoid, and caroline would be. as the meme states. zonked out of her gourd. therefore,

Read Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, and Nona the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir. Very good books. Fun time. What if Catholicism were Homestuck? Well, apparently, if the writing is good enough, and there's lesbians, it would be a fun and interesting book series? I wouldn't have thought so either initially.

More seriously, though, they're very good books, and remain good despite substantial changes to the narrative format over the course of the books. I will say, I did not particularly like the interstitial narratives in Nona. This is mostly because I think referring to present-day (more or less) Earth in SFF is a silly move that is sort of pointless by definition. If you've convinced your audience to care about your silly make-believe world, then talking about Earth is an obtrusive diversion, and if you haven't, then you're dead in the water anyway. I appreciate it characterizes John a bit more, but I dunno if either the method or the goal were apt. Nona is still great, because the interstitials are ultimately a small part of a very funny book, but, y'know.

I think more of the meme jokes are forced and unfunny than work out, and I think the bad ones detract more from the books than the good ones add to them. I guess it's lampshaded with the bad pun humor thing at the very start of the series, but, eh, doesn't help.

I have less to say about these books than I do about most things I review here. This is partly because it's easier to tear stuff down than praise it and there's so little to tear down, but mostly because, as I did with Friends at the Table, I have elected to pester exclusively the person whose fault it is that I'm reading this stuff with my inane observations, as punishment. I note that literally everyone else on tumblr has chosen a slightly different approach to the two series I'm mentioning. This is because I am an insufferable contrarian and also I don't really vibe with the concept of fandom but that's a separate issue. By the way, you might wonder why I would punish someone for introducing me to good books.

Been reading the Earthsea books because I never got to as a kid (did get to read the Chronicles of Prydain books, those ruled I think). Bit of a confluence of themes there, lot of stuff about mortality and the ways to attain and use power. Earthsea obviously less a fan of immortality as a concept, though even there I suspect there's a fair degree of ideological overlap. Also the only character who sticks around through the whole series has two names and they are Ged and Sparrowhawk. And the second book takes place in a locked tomb. Coincidences are funny I think.

Uh, who to recommend these books to. Anyone looking for a good series of novels to fill however much time it takes you to read them? They're really very good. I eagerly await Alecto the Ninth.

If it helps I genuinely only talk about Vinnie like 90% of the time so for me it would be Vinnie who I adore and everyone else would be drowning or already dead. I swear I love them all dearly, but Vinnie? Well, he's just 110% of my love. It's not that everyone else is not 10/10, it's just that Vinnie is 4709328743093828573/10. And you know what? For someone who's least favourite character out of them is Zoe I definitely talk about her more than at least Minka and Penny.

"There oughta be a name for people like us," Jimmy says, slim fingers tracing out the bones in Tango's wrist.

"There is," Tango says. "Doomed."

Jimmy laughs—he can't help it. Tango snorts. He sets his hand on his abdomen, drumming against it.

"You're laughing at me."

Jimmy squeezes his wrist. His freckled skin is so much warmer than Jimmy's, especially in the cool, damp night. He briefly wonders if the temperature difference bothers Tango. But he makes no move away from him. He looks over at him as he winds his fingers around it, trying to catch the flicker of his pupiless eyes in the light of lanterns and the moon. Tango's hands are rough with use, but not as rough as they could be. He's not wearing his gloves today. Maybe he trusts himself not to scald his soulmate.

"Not at you," Jimmy says. "That would be so mean!"

Tango hums, unconvinced. His eyebrows raise and he finally tips his head to look at Jimmy. It's a nice face, Jimmy thinks. Well—it's a normal face, and there are nice things about it, like his smile, and the way his freckles show when he's embarrassed or excited, and the twitch of his ears when something's upset him. It's just a nice face and a very kind personality, despite what people said about being volatile and flighty and nervous and bitter. Tango was all of those things, but Jimmy was, too. Did they forget so soon that he could hold matches too?

"What, then?" Tango asks, snapping him to attention. Right. Enough about Tango. Well. Everything about Tango. He was going to kick himself later, wasn't he? Because this was all right place wrong time, and he'd never really get to know Tango like he wanted, beyond this. He runs the pad of his thumb over the raised bone in Tango's wrist and threads their fingers together. Tango shimmies his fingers to get comfortable.

"I thought it was funny when you said doomed," Jimmy eventually says, finally swallowing down the rush of want that bubbled up in his throat. Could it be so bad to want this? To want to sleep in the grass next to the warm shape Tango made? But Tango was being nice. Jimmy forgets when he laid down. Tango was out here first, staring at the sky.

"Normally, people call me names," Jimmy finishes, laughs, scrunching up his face. Tango snorts and laughs and squeezes Jimmy's hand. Oh, that's nice. "But I guess you're right, though, with doomed. I was thinking something else, but that's good."

Tango's wheezy laugh peters out as he sighs, shaking his head in the grass.

"What were you thinking?"

"Mm..." Jimmy sighs through his nose. "I'm like a dead man walking. Always felt like it."

Tango huffs. Jimmy glances over to see him shut his eyes.

"Yeah. Yeah, me too."

There's a beat of silence as they lie together, looking up at the sky. Jimmy tries to map the patterns of the stars to any known shape, fails, and huffs. Tango squeezes his hand.

"You wanna get inside?" He says. "You look cold."

Jimmy nods.

"Are you comin'?" He asks. Tango blinks, shrugging his shoulders.

"Oh..." he says. "Sure. I'll come with you."

Jimmy hauls himself up, brushing dirt from the back of his thighs and ruffling his hair. Tango stands after a beat, tail swishing behind him. He reaches out, picking a stray leaf off Jimmy's shoulder, grinning toothily at him. Jimmy meets that smile with one lopsided and wide and he can't shake the feeling of something being right. Jimmy holds out his hand for him and Tango takes it, knocking into him as they press together against the cold.

They walk inside. Tango doesn't let go of his hand.

I'm still looking around for an long time rp partner. I do have some storylines going at the moment but I'm still kind of figuring out what I want & the more possibilities the better.

Who am I:

My name is Dorian/ Dax. My pronouns are he / him - They / Them. I'm 26 and I have been in the rp community for over 12 years. I have done both long format storylines on rpg forum boards as well as rapidfire ones on Discord and telegram. I've always played fandomless only. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to setting/ rp style.

I am in the CET timezone. My first language is Dutch so it can be that I make small grammar errors when writing in English, especially when writing multiple paragraphs. I study creative writing, so sometimes my replies are a little less frequent when the semester is particularly busy. But I love to chat ooc as well, so you can always shoot me a message and I'll make sure to reply as quickly as I can ^-^

Most of my OCs are male. I currently have three female characters that stuck around. I don't mind writing female characters, I'm just not very good at it. But who knows, improvement might be inescapable fhfgddd. All of my OCs have an overachring background lore. They are all from the same universe. The lore of that universe can be included in our storyline but it's not necessary for the storyline to function. Basically it can be used if it enriches the story, but I have no problem with dropping my guys into any story world/ AU imaginable.

I am very new to the term "dead dove" and am a little hesitant to partake. Not to say that I won't write any dark themes ever, but it's not specifically what I'm looking for right now. A plot can have its dark moments, but I am not looking for a fully dark plot.

I don't really mind whether you write multiple paragraphs, do one-liners or anything in between. As long as it's well structured, has substance and engages with whatever is going on in the plot, it's great. I love complex inner monolog about what your character is thinking/ feeling. I also really love it when people put detail and thought into the surroundings that the characters are in.

What would work great for me is if you / your character loves to explain things about their homeworld. Or if you/ your character would love to learn about my homeworld.

I love the bonding between characters that formers through learning / exploring together and one of them taking the other under their wing.

Fantasy worlds tend to work best for the dynamics described above but there are _a lot_ of variations possible (think: pirates, medieval, apocalyptic, historical, steampunk, victorian ect) and especially once we know which characters make a good match we can do endless AU's with them too!

I love plotting together and talking ooc. I am so for telling each other about our silly little guys & how they are 100% not prepared for the stuff we're about to throw their way. Please tell me why they would be absolutely insufferable together or super wholesome :3 Feel free to send funny memes about our guys or pictures about our storyworlds. On the other hand I would also like to get to know you & what's going on in your life. Being both friends & rp partners would be awesome! No pressure tho, it's fully valid that not everyone is comfortable or able to open up quickly.

2 - 5 replies weekly would be great! Though I fully understand that life is very busy and this won't always be possible. Communication is key. As long as the ooc contact stays on / periods of inactivity are communicated about before (if possible) or afterwards, it's all good. Rapidfire would be very fun to do for certain storylines but I understand that it takes a lot of time. So maybe we could try and arrange that on a weekend day.

I love it when people are overall enthusiastic, come up with ideas, engage with the plot, and engage a lot ooc.

episode that you love?

im only on season four but i've got a couple of faves so far:

1x21 'three stories': it's practically law that i have to include this. absolute classic of an episode. i love the format, i love the backstory we get, and i especially love the med students!! they were fun and i hope they come back at some point. probably not but im still holding out hope. teacher!house was great to see too, and the deep-dive into his backstory is so delightfully painful and heart-wrenching,,, oughgh

2x07 'hunting': very fun episode!! "what, because you're a closet case?" absolutely killed me the first time i watched it. get their asses lmao. also we get to see steve mcqueen (my beloved <3) and cameron on meth - fun times!

2x15 'clueless' and 2x16 'safe': mainly for the hilson roommates subplot tbf, but the cases were interesting too! these eps also had a lot of funny moments, like wilson sawing through house's cane and the whole tick debacle lmao

3x02 'cane & able': where do i start with this one. first of all the awful cgi hallucinations were fucking hilarious, i was so fucking confused tho. like the whole time i was just going helllo???? aliens????? great stuff. the rest case itself was really fun too!! and this is the one where we get the infamous "i was worried that your wings would melt" speech. oughghgh top tier content right there.

3x04 'lines in the sand': controversial take right here. this is the infamous autism episode. the way they handled it was. well. it was 2006. so. the case itself was interesting too, but the main highlight for me is the autistic house moments <3 and look. i KNOW wilson says house doesn't actually have autism. but MASKING EXISTS, WILSON!! you can pry this headcanon out of my cold dead hands. i support autism rights but i also support autism wrongs or however the meme goes. more people should get to be autistic and jerks i think <3 (saying all this as a guy who most likely has autism btw. i havent got an official diagnosis but uhhhh yeah it's Likely.)

3x07 'son of coma guy': hilson road trip! plus coma guy ig. but mainly hilson road trip :) i love them.

4x02 'the right stuff': i love love love the whole gameshow-esque thing house starts. we get to see some great characters (amber! kutner! dobson my beloved!!!!), and it's just all round a bit of fun. love it.

4x05 'mirror mirror': another fun one!! the mirror syndrome guy gives us a lot of fun insights into the applicant's personalities, i thought that was a really fun way of showing it rather than have a million expositions about each of them lol. also the banter was fun this episode, especially between house, wilson and cuddy. also we find out that wilson is more dominant than house and that kutner's a masochist. great fuel for fic writers. fun!

4x12 'don't ever change': ohohhoo i love this one. the case was alright but the best bit abt it imo was the house, wilson and amber dynamic. i love this trio so fucking much you don't understand,,, i honestly think we should've got poly wilson/amber/house. just think abt it... house and amber friendly rivalry... teaming up to bully wilson... and also amber and wilson bullying house together... would it be a little dysfunctional? yes. but that's to be expected in this show lmao. idk why this turned into a pitch for these three i just love them very very much <3

4x13 'no more mr. nice guy': again for the wilson/amber/house dynamic. this one is very fun i love their custody dispute over wilson, and the dog analogy was very funny to me. and cuddy making house and amber do coma patient duty lmao. AND bisexual thirteen!! love her <3

i haven't actually gotten to the last couple episodes of s4 yet because uhhhh Bad Things Happen and i am delaying the inevitable. send help. but i am sure they are very good and will probably make this list once i get around to watching them!

honourable mentions include 2x13 'skin deep' (purely for the scene where house is in the mri machine and wilson pretends to be god lol), 3x22 'resignation' (for the wilson on amphetamines scene. "i'm not on antidepressants, i'm on speeeeeeeed!" gets me every fucking time) and 4x01 'alone' (house and wilson prank war!!!)

soooo yeah those are my favourites :) and i'm sure there'll be a lot more once i finish the rest of the show but like i said i am Procrastinating lmao
