So how do you think the darkeyed politics resolved in WAT? I remember seeing so much criticism on it for previous books but I'm only seeing some stuff for this one.

oh bad lol. it's always bad. i think maybe it was less insanely tone deaf and more just not physically in the book for sa5 (just as bad) so maybe that's why you're seeing less of it but it's always bad. i think white fantasy authors often find examples of racism and classism or real world historical models of oppression and think "hooray hooray a fun little thing i can use to spice up my worldbuilding" and not in the real sense of like. this is a thing that happens to people and affects their worldview in a way that sometimes doesn't befit a narrative arc. i remember watching a 'what your fave fantasy series say about you' yt video by a popular fantasy booktuber years ago who got to n. k. jemisin's broken earth series (the best series to ever have done the fantasy racism thing imo) and said "if this is your fave series you probably care more about The Message than you do anything else about the book" and man. fuck off lol. wtf is that supposed to mean? like oh a black woman took fantasy racism SERIOUSLY and immediately white people send her award winning series to fucking DEI hell? just write her off immediately because theyre not used to actually examining the oppression so many of them love writing about?

i wasn't expecting anything different from stormlight 5 and there were a couple of wins (kaladin's eyes, mentioning the kharbranth murders, what seems to be irrefutable narrative destiny that points to a positive moash resolution, some singer stuff but not all) but it doesnt change the fact that people who read way of kings and expected a story that cared more about dismantling systems of power than it did about writing....how many? two full on sieges? two sieges with the promise of a third? are going to feel cheated out of what was set up early in the series.

When grandma comes to get him, he’s just gone to the bathroom. He is about to greet her, when he hears the hushed voice of Abuelita go: “Helena, did you know Chris is not talking to Eddie?”

“Of course,” grandma responds. “He doesn’t have to talk to him if he doesn’t want to. I’m not going to force him. He came to us for a reason.”

“What reason? He was mad at his dad? Most teens are,” Abuelita tells her. “You need to help him make up, not create a bigger wedge between them. His father is all he has left.”

“He has us too,” grandma argues.

“Come on now, see reason. You and Ramon aren’t fit to care for a child right now. Trust me, I’ve been your age. You two are retired, not parents. Chris isn’t going to be happy here, he has roots in LA, people there,” Abuelita says.

“People like who? Eddie’s friends? That Buck character?” grandma scoffs and Chris’s inside squirm, she sounds like the person from the diary. And what does she have against Buck?

“Yes!”

“They don’t know how to care for a kid like Chris and he doesn’t want to live with Eddie,” grandma continues to argue. “Chris is hurting. Living with Eddie wasn’t good for him. He tried. We let him leave the nest, strike out on his own, but you know how Eddie has always been.”

“I don’t, actually,” Abuelita counters. “Eddie is a capable young man, who has always – always – tried to do what was best for Christopher. And you and Ramon always undermined him, always doubted him.”

“You don’t know that. You were in LA, you and Pepa both. You do not get to judge us like that,” grandma tells her.

“I know enough,” Abuelita says. “And the least you can do, is see if you can arrange something to let Eddie wish his son happy birthday. Force Chris to talk to him, even for two minutes. You know it killed him to be apart from Chris every time.”

“Chris doesn’t have to, Isabel,” grandma tells Abuelita. “It’ll be his birthday. You can respect he doesn’t want to do that on his birthday.”

“Maybe, but I won’t respect you for it. Or Ramon. Know I will call him after this.”

“Fine.”

“Fine.”

my gut reaction was eiffel, but i feel like after having to lock himself in lovelace’s cryo pod over and over for so long, being in a somewhat enclosed situation like that would make him a little uneasy

i feel like cozying up with normal blankets is something minkowski would like? but i don’t think she’d be too big a fan of weighted blankets, i think the feeling of being constricted would be a sensory issue for her

honestly i think if anyone would own one it would be lovelace, i feel like the security and certainty of something holding her while she tries to sleep would make it a lot easier for her to relax, since she’s normally so restless and would be mentally stuck in a place where she would feel the need to prepare to get out of bed at any given moment due to an emergency

eiffel returning to earth and encountering people and places and things that he's known so closely for years - that some part of him might even instinctively feel he should recognize - but without the ability to consciously remember them vs. lovelace returning to earth and seeing all those familiar things and knowing them, and knowing how they've changed in her absence, but being unable to shake the part of her that keeps telling her she's seeing them for the first time. how both of these could be used as an exploration of trauma, and returning to a place (that hasn't changed at all; that's changed too much) that you no longer fit into; that rubs up against the changed shape of your life in raw and uncomfortable places.
