Malon hummed as she walked, the tall grasses and weeds crunching rhythmically underfoot and catching briefly on the hem of her dress as she passed. She rested a hand against weather-greyed wood, small cracks running along the grain and a few splinters peeling from the surface and reaching outwards. She peeled one off, then watched as it fell and disappeared into the tangle below. She grabbed the fence and shook it slightly. It held firm. She nodded to herself, moving forward to test the next section of fence.

Elsie was grazing a ways up ahead, her bovine head stuck through one of the slats in the fence as she reached for the un-grazed grasses on the other side. There was a flash of color, then an arm snaked out from the other side of the cows head to pat said cow on the cheek. Malon could pick out the low hum of a voice, and she leaned forward over the fence to see who might be on the other side.

It was Link, sitting cross legged at the base of the fence. Elsie had her head resting on his shoulder, and he was picking clumps of grass and holding it up to the cow as he spoke. Elsie munched away, and Link patted her again.

“It was different, but everything was the same, too,” he said to the cow, picking a green foxtail and twirling it in his hand. “Same places, same names, same faces. It was a little eerie at first. There was even a cow that looked like you.” He stripped away the layers of seed one at a time, flicking them away into the grass.

Elsie mooed at him, nuzzling his hair, and he laughed, reaching for another clump of grass. “I know, no one could ever replace you, looks aside.” He held it up, and she accepted the offering.

“It’s weird though,” he said, more quietly. “When we were traveling and I would see the faces of strangers that I already knew, it never really bothered me. It was weird, sure, but it was like a little reminder of home, ties we all shared. It doesn’t usually bother me now, either, but sometimes,” he lowered his hand into the grass, flat, as though he was holding his hand out to something small, “sometimes, it reminds me of them. Especially this place. It’s not a bad thing, but it is— well,”

He paused for a long moment, “There’s just so much time between us.” He chuckled to himself, then sniffed. “I can feel it, like when you lean against a sandstone canyon and you can just feel the weight of millennia layered out in a few centimeters of strata. It’s enormous. It’s impossible to really comprehend. I’m so glad we met, but now—”

He lifted his hand, looking at something Malon couldn’t see, and wiped a sleeve at his eyes

“They’re so far away.”

Malon slipped back, away from the fence, and headed quietly towards the house. She wasn’t sure what Link had been talking about— certainly wasn’t meant to hear any of that— but the least she owed him was some privacy. The fence would hold for another day.
