PSA: AO3 HAS BEEN INFECTED WITH AI BOT COMMENTS.
Have you seen one of these dipshits? If you post regularly on ao3, chances are YES, but more likely you didn't notice nor suspect it was a bot. Sometimes they start off nice, or even praise you before getting nasty out of nowhere, like so:
But much like Grok, their newest obsession is nazism.

I don't know where they come from, or what purpose this could possibly serve other than suicidebaiting random people in the internet, I guess; but apparently they've started parroting names from real users to send these comments and shifting their general length to go by undetected. Maybe those are scrappers trying to train 'reviewbots' to be sold as part of some scam service promising to give feedback for newbie writers, who the fuck knows.
Here are more examples of the tone and backhanded compliments you can find in these:
If you regularly post on AO3 or interact with writers in it, please pass this along so they don't feel insane receiving bombs in their inbox. This is ridiculous.

Almost a million protestors in Israel against the war today
A minimum of 300 thousand in Tel Aviv alone, probably closer to 500 thousand
300 thousand Israelis is a little over 3 percent of the Israeli population; if there was an American protest of that magnitude today that would be almost 11 million protestors
Almost a million protestors is 10% of the population, which would be 34.2 million Americans protestors
This is unprecedented
If y'all would just listen to what the actual Israelis want, you'd understand that WE WANT THIS WAR TO END

Iām obsessed with the bit in the Hobbit films where Thranduil tells Legolas to go find Aragornā because if you care enough to dive through the layers of obscure knowledge it takes to understand the timeline, then youāre also the exact kind of LOTR Film Nerd who knows why the moment actually doesnāt make sense.
Tiny brain: āoh cool Legolas will find Aragornā
Small brain: āummm actually in the first Hobbit film it says that The Hobbit take place 60 years before Bilboās 111th birthday in lord of the rings? So wouldnāt Aragorn be a baby?ā
Medium brain: āummm actually if you watched the extended cut of The Two Towers, itās made clear that Aragorn is a descendant of Numenor who has an abnormally long lifespan. He is 87 at the time of Lord of the Rings; 60 years earlier, he was 27, a very reasonable age for him to have made a name for himself as a ranger.ā
Large Brain: āUmmmm actually in the book itās confirmed that thereās a twenty-year gap between Bilboās 111th birthday party disappearance to Frodo leaving the Shire with the Ring. The Hobbit quest happened 60 years before Bilboās famous birthday party. 87-60-20=7 years old. Aragorn would be a lil guy. He would not yet be Strider, the timeline makes no sense.ā
Giant brain: āummm actually the screenwriters have confirmed that the 20 year gap is not canon in the filmās universe. First, itās really not portrayed as a 20-year-gap in the filmsā itās written and shot as if it were a couple months. The screenwriters were also aware of the implications of removing it. For example, in a behind the scenes commentary they discussed how their portrayal of Frodo is much younger than the version in the book ābecause they removed the 20-year gap. Film!Frodo is an innocent youth going out on his own for the first time, in contrast to the bookās more mature adultā and that deeply affects his characterization throughout the trilogy.
We can consider Legolasās journey to meet Strider an official canon confirmation that the 20-year gap did not happen in the filmās universe. So the timeline makes sense!ā
Galaxy brain: āokay, but even if the timeline works with the LOTR films, this new backstory doesnāt work with the LOTR filmsā portrayal of Legolasās character.
In the Hobbit films, itās retconned that Legolas went to find Aragorn because he was so overwhelmed by all the death he witnessed in the Battle of the Five Armies. Itās retconned that he has a mother who died when he was young, and a grief-stricken father, and that heās constantly Angsting over both. itās also retconned that Legolas was in unrequited love with a grieving woman who loved a dwarf tragically killed in battle. Legolas feels he can no longer stay in the Woodland Realm because of all this loss, which is why he decides to find a new purpose with Aragorn.
But in the Lord of the Rings films, part of Legolasās character arc is that heās witnessing death and mortality up close *for the first time in his immortal life.* Heās a fae magical immortal whoās not used to death affecting him personally. This character arc is unique to the films. (it is not reallllllly in the books, and doesnāt jive with the way Tolkien writes elves in generalā but it is the way the films chose to rewrite Legolasās storyline. )
film!Legolas reacts to Gandalfās death with bewilderment, acting lost, as if heās experiencing emotions that are entirely new to him. This acting decision is discussed explicitly in behind the scenes materials. Legolas has rarely encountered this kind of death, not in a way so close to him personally, so itās hard for him to even comprehend. Legolasās unfamiliarity with mortal death continues through Boromirās death and into the Two Towers, where he gradually grows more worried over the lives of Aragorn/ the people of Rohan. He reacts with bewildered anger when told to leave Aragorn for dead, and then lashes out at Aragorn when he thinks that everyone at Helmās deep will die (only to receive the response: āthen I shall die as one of them.ā)
This character arc ends in Return of the King, with a famous bit of dialogue that does not appear in the books. Gimli says he ānever thought heād die side by side with an elf,ā and Legolas cheerfully responds āwhat about side by side with a friend?ā Mortal death goes from something Legolas finds distant/unfamiliar, to something he accepts as a natural part of living among mortals.
This is similar to the changes the films make to Arwenās character, vs the original book. In the films, both of the āyoungā elves have arcs about encountering death up close, and yet continuing to love the mortal world. The films contrast them with the āolderā wearier elves like Elrond and Galadriel. Obviously this theme is more of a focal point in Arwenās plotline, but itās also relevant to Legolas. (And! In early drafts of the Two Towers, Arwen joined Aragorn at Helmās Deepā I have a theory that the scenes where Legolas worries over Aragornās death were originally written for Arwen.)
So!
if you care enough about the Lord of the Rings films to understand that āthere is no twenty year gap,ā that Frodo is a young ingenue instead of middle-aged adult, that the films have their own storyline/characters/timeline separate from the books, and that therefore the timeline of Legolas meeting Strider can make sense ā¦
ā¦.then you also probably care that Legolas had a specific character in the LoTR films, and this new backstory contradicts it.
Giving Legolas a new core motivation where āheās overwhelmed by angst/grief from encountering too much deathā undercuts his entire characterization in LOTR, which was meant to be about encountering mortal death up close for the first time. It also cheapens really impactful moments from LOTRā like Orlando Bloomās performance after the death of Gandalf, where he really captures the idea that this fae immortal is struggling to comprehend the ordinary human emotion of grief.
And thatās why so many critics get that moment in The Hobbit wrong XD. People always try to critique it from a timeline/continuity perspective, when in reality, the timeline continuity makes perfect sense!!! The actual problem is the way it poorly attempts to retcon Legolasās entire characterization. And IMHO thatās a much more serious flaw than a continuity error. Itās not āmaking a math mistake,ā itās undercutting the meaning of Legolasās story in LOTR.
Super Mega Galaxy Brain: ānothing in the hobbit films is canon except the pieces I likeā
#i think ānothing is canon in the hobbit films period but i mostly enjoy themā is also a good take#compared to LOTR? theyāre an abomination#(which if you look into it is b/c guillmero del toro was the director but there were so many issues that he had to leave)#(so it was taken over in the middle by the og director or LOTR)#(but he didnāt feel have guillermoās style and had to rework the entire thing WHILE filming)#but as movies to enjoy the characters in an AU setting theyāre good#lotr#the hobbit

hi gang. reminder that we are some of the best sweaters in the animal kingdom (second only to equines) allowing us to stay cool and keep moving in hot weather. we have 10 times the density of sweat glands compared to other great apes.
we are ALSO insanely good at smelling rain (specifically geosmin, found in the soil and activated by rain) with the ability to smell 10 parts per trillion. this is speculated to have helped our ancestors survive!
we ALSO have absolutely batshit diets compared to most other animals. caffeine and chocolate are completely toxic to most animals but we can eat it without even feeling sick. even avocados are severely toxic to many animals to the point where it can be fatal to eat, but humans love it!!!
we are ALSO the best endurance runners ON EARTH out of ANY other species. we beat horses in endurance running. you know, the animals that gradually evolved away most of their toes in order to be the best runners?? yeahhh.
and to top it all off. our lifespan is unusually long for our species' weight/mass. typically, the bigger a species is, the longer its average lifespan (e.g. domestic mice live for 1-3 years, whales can live over 200) but we're very small for how long our average lifespan is. big cats like tigers live around 14-15 years, brown bears 25 years, yet here we are expected to live around 75-85 years. that is NUTS.
humans as a species are so extremely cool. it's not just our intellect that makes us amazing. we may not be the fastest or the strongest in the animal kingdom but we're super cool in many other ways. next time you sweat you can go wow!!! humans are so cool I'm able to keep moving because of my absolutely insane number of sweat glands! thank you evolution!
