I literally know so much of my misery boils down to my overextended reading slump like this can’t go on
#I need to start reading again I’m feeling miserable not doing that bitch#My bookcase needs love#what if my analysis skills atrophied entirely#Now I need to buy a book on analysis too bc I’m scared I won’t absorb anything#Then I can start reading again and then I can post my thoughts about what I’m reading instead of being annoyed with people here perpetually#To be fair I have to study and I do count textbooks but I miss reading something from my BOOKCASE#I might join a book club I think that would be such a sick idea

Books Aaron Has Read and Enjoyed [a ramble]
Photo credits: Left (mine) Center (@hotch-girl) Right (@lone-nyctophile)
So deep down I think Aaron loves to read. Not all the time, because there isn’t time for it often. But every now and then he’ll pick up a book for one reason or another. Because of this, I’ve compiled a list of six books that I think Aaron has read, why he read it, and what his favorite line of the book was and why. I think this list might prove Aaron is a romantic, even if he doesn’t think so. Enjoy all of that below the cut. Sending my love to you all this Saturday evening - Levi
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbra Kingsolver
When and why he read it - Aaron had to take an America Novel class his sophomore year.
Why he likes it - Aaron really wasn’t a fan of the book at the beginning. It was the longest book on the reading list, and even though he is a fast reader, he found it tedious at the beginning. However as the story progresses and he saw Mr. Price spiral out of control and eventually succumbs to his mania, Hotch feels a connection to the man and his own father. He felt a sick sort of satisfaction as Mr. Price was burned alive due to his madness. This is a book Aaron wouldn’t reread, but he remembers it well.
His favorite quote from the text - “Don’t try and make life a mathematics problem with yourself in the center and everything coming out equal. When you’re good, bad things can still happen. And if you’re bad, you can still get lucky” (Kingsolver).
King Lear by William Sheakspeare
When and why he read it - Aaron read this in high school when he was starting to fall in love with Hailey. He joined the theater club and went as far as reading King Lear because Hailey loved it and was writing a paper about it.
Why he likes it - He likes it because it brings him fond memories of Hailey and their very early relationship. He has reread the play a few times though he has no idea where his original copy is. He went looking through a few boxes in the attic once with no success.
His favorite quote from the text - “In jest, there is truth” (Shakespeare).
The Sound and the Fury by Willaim Faulkner
When and why he read it - This is one that Aaron picked up for himself. He’d been told it was a classic so many times, and he figured he would see what all the fuss was about. He read this over a quiet weekend when the team was having a break.
Why he likes it - Aaron enjoys the second and fourth sections the most. The stream-of-consciousness style in Quetinen Compson’s section was a nice change from the first. Aaron wouldn’t say it aloud, but it had been a challenging read for him. He shudders at the thought of reading something like Infinite Jest, another book that he had been told that he just must read in his lifetime.
His favorite quote from the text - “I give you mausoleums of all hope and desire… I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all your breath trying to conquer it. Because no battle is ever won he said. They are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools” (Faulkner).
The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
When and why he read it - During a few cases in the winter when Aaron felt that he wasn’t his sharpest, he had complained to Rossi about questioning his abilities to profile and lead the team. That Christmas Dave had given him this collection and a note on the inside read: “If you’re doubting yourself, why don’t you read about a real profiler?” The note had been a joke, but one day he decided, ‘What the hell? Let’s see how wrong Doyle got the science.’
Why he likes it - Aaron didn’t expect to like the character of Sherlock as much as he had. The Britishisms and Holmes's dry humor made him chuckle. The science was very wrong.
His favorite quote from the text - “As a rule, the more bizarre a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be” (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).
The Brothers Karimozov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
When and why he read it - This was a gift for his forty-seventh birthday from you (the reader). It’s their favorite book, and they thought he might like the themes of family, atheism, and loss of faith.
Why he likes it - He found reading this both easier and more challenging than The Poisonwood Bible. He was much older, but the depth of the story and the ideas brought up challenged him to introspect in a way that he hadn’t in a long time. After he finished he felt a bit cathartic and he had to call you to give some thoughts.
His favorite quote from the text - “I believe like a child that suffering will be healed and made up for, that all the humiliating absurdity of human contradictions will vanish like a pitiful mirage, like the despicable fabrications of the impotent and infinitely small Euclidean mind of man, that in the world's finale, at the moment of eternal harmony, something so precious will come to pass that it will suffice for all hearts, for the comforting of all resentments, for the atonement of all the crimes of humanity, for all the blood that they’ve shed; that it will make it not only possible to forgive but to justified all that has happened” (Dostoyevsky). - Aaron isn’t sure if this is his favorite because he likes it, or because it’s your favorite line. When you tried to explain why, you cried, and he held you close. Aaron’s not sure he believes everything said here. He’s not sure he’s earned a spot for that type of bliss when he goes. But he wants it for you and for Jack and Hailey too. And for him, that’s good enough.
On Beautry by Zadie Smith
When and why he read it - This was a gift from Emily after her first month on the team. She was just so grateful that she was with the BAU. It felt like home to her.
Why he likes it - Aaron likes satire. The biting and witty phrases of Smith make him smile. He may not understand that it's a spoof of Howard’s End, but it doesn’t really matter for his understanding of the text. The last line, his favorite, also reminds him of Hailey and it makes him a bit sad, but not in a heartbreaking kind of way. More that there was hope. Hope for broken people, and he wanted to believe in that.
His favorite quote from the text - “Though her hands were imprecise blurs, paint heaped on paint and rolled with the brush, the rest of her skin had been expertly rendered in all its variety -- chalky whites, and lively pinks, the underlying blue of her veins and the ever-present human hint of yellow, imitations of what is to come” (Smith)

Fluffbruary Masterpost
FLUFFBRUARY 2023 MASTERPOST | @fluffbruary
Extremely excited to be starting fluffbruary after having such a successful flufftober last year, I honestly just can't wait to write more cute domestic fluff one-shots.
My goal for this challenge is to combine as many prompts as possible into one flowing story/collection of one-shots that are all part of the same universe. It may work but it might not, it's all just an exciting attempt to challenge myself.
01/02 - (Clue | Velvet | Museum) Large Ambitions | steve rogers/tony stark
After long nights of talking Tony and Steve have large ambitions for Peter’s birthday, it’s not until the next morning they realise how large their ambitions are.
02/02 - (Memory | Trace | Movie) The Same Way Astronomers Trace The Stars | stephen strange/tony stark
The ways Stephen Strange has dealt with not being able to sleep over the years, and why it’s changed.
04/02 - (Daydream | Snow | Rest) No Plan To Sneak Out In A Snow Storm | steve rogers/tony stark/james 'bucky' barnes/james 'rhodey' rhodes
Rhodey convinces his boyfriends to join him in replying to Tony’s mother’s note to join them for Thanksgiving. At least the bed is big enough for the four of them until they can get a hotel that is.
07/02 - (Routine | Colourful | Energy) Magic and Middle-Earth | stephen strange/tony stark
Stephen doesn’t like when people take his notes or idea for Avengers book club which leads Bucky and Peter into an interesting situation, almost punishment for Bucky loving the Hobbit so much.
09/02 - (Ghost | Fireplace | Harmony) Some Dramatics First | sam wilson/james 'bucky' barnes, tony stark/stephen strange
Bucky Barnes wouldn’t say that he is unlucky, but he’s certainly not the luckiest person in the world, it’s exactly what he’s thinking while sitting in the campus jail cell. But he has an (okay) friend who can bail him out, it might just take some dramatics first.
10/02 - (Moment | Strong | Neck) In The Circle | peter parker/? (read to find out)
Peter signed up to the circle for some fun (and because he desperately needed the money) thinking that it would at least be a fun 4 week’s vacation, he didn’t expect to fall in love with someone over a screen.
12/02 - (Amber | Tenderness | Incandescent) Laughter, Relationships and Partners | tony stark/james 'rhodey' rhodes/james 'bucky' barnes
It wasn’t Bucky’s intention to get between a relationship, especially not one as strong as Rhodey and Tony’s, but in his defence, he didn’t know they were dating. (A bad description).
14/02 - (Idea | Teach | Fruit) Idea's Keep From Sleeping | tony stark/james 'rhodey' rhodes/james 'bucky' barnes
Bucky goes to collect Tony from the lab so they can all go to bed together for once, but then Bucky gets distracted and so then it’s up to Rhodey to figure it all out.
16/02 - (Sailor | Landscape | Glasses) Out Of My Limit - Live | tony stark/james 'rhodey' rhodes
James stares at the customer in front of him, “uh sorry sir but we don’t have any of that,” because who walks into a service station and asks for a poppyseed muffin.
18/02 - (Recovery | Flight | Film) “Anyone could see that the Prince was charming. The only one for me.” | tony stark/sam wilson
Sam and Tony watch Snow White and The Seven Dwarfts, but Tony is fairly sure that it’s not Snow White on screen, because he never remembers a proposal in the movie.
20/02 - (Favourite | Reveal | Lounge) Breathing In Love (Breathing Out Friendship) | james ‘bucky’ barnes/peter quill, tony stark/stephen strange
Bucky’s not in love with Tony Stark, he refuses to be because he’s about to be married to Peter Quill. Tony loves Stephen Strange and they have the money that makes love more than real. Bucky just needs some air instead.
23/02 - (Scrap | Snack | Ballet) Chicken Whiny Soup | tony stark/james 'rhodey' rhodes/sam wilson
Sam makes chicken noodle soup for everyone when they are sick, the thing is, you have to actually be sick to get the soup.

"Well," she frowned a little as he nuzzled against her. Not at the action but at the reasoning for this research. "That'll teach you to be right about something." It upset her that the one person who tried to do things the right way, was right about things, was always being passed over for not buying into the boys club, the power trippers, and their ways of things. "Whoever is doing this wants the notoriety of it all, I mean isn't this one of the most popular horror movies in the last couple of years? I mean, that doesn't say childhood trauma, but it does say lonely adult. Maybe someone who watches these movies a little too much, most likely is an outsider. Do the victims look like the movie victims? Share names with them?" Her brain began to spew ideas out nervously to keep from being on edge about the music playing on the screen, no doubt a scare around the corner that she was bracing herself for. "People are complicated, they probably just want some sort of validation from somewhere. Maybe someone important to them left or died, and they have no one but these movies. They see the fans; if you want weird, they are weird! Have you seen people who they post calling the killers in these movies sexy? And daddy? What does that even mean?" That was a tangent that she couldn't get into right now. "I don't think they would want to do this to get off, per say, they just want acceptance somewhere." And the fans of these movies...." Then it came, a small flinch, but a flinch none the less, at the loud sound, the yell and the scare that she saw coming but somehow still caught her off guard. "Farðu til helvítis!" Was muttered under her breath, disappointed at herself.
Shoving the pillow aside, she rolled her eyes, teasing. "Anything to keep from giving me the real thing, I see." Not that she wanted it, all that rain? It was always freezing cold. The possibility of getting sick. Wet clothes, the wind making it worse. Who found rain romantic? But she wouldn't pass up the opportunity to tease him. Walking away from him, she shrugged as she said over her shoulder. "Maybe, you don't know what other things I keep from you. I might be a master at it but you don't know it." Nothing. That was the real answer, she never kept anything from him now. Besides presents or surprises but that was different, that was innocent little things There didn't seem to be anything that he didn't know about her or her day now. An open book for him to peruse and read when he wanted. "Incentives?" A giggle laced her voice as she began to line up the small cakes on the counter, making sure they were cool enough to ice now. "What kind of incentives do you think you can offer up for a secret thing?" Purposely choosing the word thing, instead of the p-word that would most likely give away the dessert she had made for him.
Getting the ingredients ready to make the icing now that the cakes were sufficiently cooled, she stopped as he wrapped his arms around her. Body leaning back against him, hands landing on top of his, a small smile to her face. "If that's your incentive," she turned in his arms, hooked an arm around his neck. "You need to work on your incentives." Nuzzling the tip of her nose against his, she chuckled before kissing his cheek and taking a step back. " Are we handing out candy or joining the littles out for their hunt of treats?" She turned her attention back to making her icing, deciding to let him squirm for a little while longer about what she made, a tiny bit of her wanting to get back at him for the horror movie thing.
He was about to ask if she was invested but one look at her and he knew. The way her eyes were glued to the screen, she wanted to know how this thing ended. So he saved his comments for later. Instead he continued to stare at her, the movie long forgotten as he was content on just watching her. "Hmm." Was the only comment he had on that and sighed. "Apparently to some people it is."
It was hard not to look at her like she was his entire world when she went off on a tangent. His eyes sparkled with amusement the minute she went off and that smile couldn't be helped. That enamored smile that truly only came out everytime she walked into the room. This wasn't what he expected when he put the movie on for the hell of it while she was baking away but it had caught his attention the moment one of the leads went outside and opened the door to find the source of the noise. A huge mistake he always thought was stupid. Going toward the noise instead of away. So when Liz talked his teeth chewed on his bottom lip to keep from laughing.
He laughed and shook his head and nuzzled her warm skin. "No, it's this case that has been coined the Halloween Spree. This guy gets ideas from these films. They were going to put Johannas on this but gave it to me when I called bullshit on their childhood trauma idea." He was of the mind that not every kid who went through childhood abuse turned out to be psychos. "I'm just trying to figure out what about these movies get him off. People are weird."
"How could I forget it? You show me every single day." He smiled at her and caressed her cheek. "This would totally count as that Spiderman kiss." He let out a surprised gasp as he watched her stretch and walked away. 'You wouldn't keep that from me?!" As he followed her to the kitchen and leaned against the frame. "What if I offer up incentives?" He asked as he moved over to wait for further instructions to ice the cakes. He knew he couldn't wait to find out what else she made so he pressed himself against her and wrapped his arms around her waist. Nuzzling her shoulder he whispered. "What did you make?" His fingertips rubbing against her stomach softly.

Hii I was lowkey wondering if you would do something maybe like a one shot of neglected where reader is older (18-20) and dipped out of the house and became a singer and one of her songs basically exposed them for how they treated reader and in like an interview she full on tells them how she doesn’t even talk to them and like only Jason
This is literally perfect. I love this idea! I was planning on making a singer batsis reader anyway so here you go! I'll be making this part 4 of the series instead of a one shot. There’s a bit of angst. Btw, thanks so much for your support everyone! I'm glad you enjoy this series! Feel free to request anything you'd like besides smut as well!
This is the longest thing I have ever written so there will be a part 5. I planned on this being the last part but it's just so much. It’s not proofread and neither are all of the other parts because I post at 1 am most of the time lol. Hope you like it!
f/n = friend name
Y/G/N = your group name
N/S = news station
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 (Current) Part 5
---
You were sick of it. Sick of how even after confronting them about how you felt and almost dying because of it, they still neglected you. You couldn't wait to move out at the age of 18, even if it proved to be a struggle. You had taken mini jobs since you turned 15 and saved up since then. You just couldn't see them anymore as it would remind you of how they treated you that day at that hospital. None of them apologized either. They just pretended it never happened and continued to ignore you. The media had a field day with speculation of what had happened but eventually stopped because Bruce had claimed it was “just a bad case of the flu” which they believed.
Jason was always the only one that would talk to you. He was the only one that actually cared enough to make sure you were taking proper care of yourself and that you wouldn't have a repeat of what happened. He took you places, spent time with you and gave you advice. You even had a tradition where you'd always meet up at the manor's library every week at the same time that same day every week and just have a mini book club together. He always made time for you and never bailed on you.
So on your 18th birthday, he helped you move out. You managed to rent a small apartment in Star City with the money you had saved up. It wasn’t that close to the manor which was a good thing. The neighborhood wasn’t good but it wasn’t as bad as Gotham’s neighborhoods so you would be fine. You could handle yourself with your assassin training if needed. You also managed to get hired at a cafe which was about a five minutes walking distance from your apartment.
It had taken a while but eventually, you had packed all of your belongings into color coded containers and moved them into Jason’s car with his help. You didn’t say goodbye to anyone as you had no friends to say bye to and you knew that your so called “family” couldn’t care less about what you did with your life. ‘This is it, hopefully the last time I’ll ever be near this place.’ You thought. You didn’t plan on stepping foot in Gotham ever again after you left. It would bring back too many memories you prefer to keep buried away deep inside your mind.
The car ride to Star City was entertaining. You and Jason conversed the whole time, telling jokes and listening to his funny tales with the radio playing softly in the background. Eventually, a song you both loved came on and you both started yell-singing along to the lyrics. You wished those moments could be permanent. You were both so carefree and nothing else mattered besides having fun and enjoying yourselves.
You now stood in the doorway of your new apartment, admiring your new home. Jason and yourself had just finished unpacking all of your belongings. You really liked how it looked and thought you both did an amazing job at designing the place perfectly according to your style. Jason, unfortunately, had to leave in order to avoid raising suspicions. Once you both said your byes, he left you to your apartment.
Jason drove back home in silence. He hated to admit it but he would miss you dearly. You were always there for him and helped him with anything. You tried your best to always comfort him and make him feel better on his darkest days and it would always work. Somehow you seemed to always have the right words to say or knew exactly what to do to help him. Out of everyone he was closest to you. He assumed it was because he could relate to you the most. More so how you felt. He’d felt like the black sheep of the family before you came, and he was. When you came, you took that role from him. It pained him to see how much their insults would affect you, even if you were good at hiding it. He could just tell.
Jason made it back to the manor after a while and went straight to the library. He didn't want to deal with the others. After the whole hospital situation, he'd never really bother interacting with them. He hated how they treated you as if you didn’t exist and hated how much pain they had caused you and that they didn’t even care. He guessed that they'd probably be doing something for Damian's birthday and forgot that you were his twin. They probably couldn’t even remember that Damian had a twin.
He made it to the library and pulled out one of his favorite books. He’d read it so many times you’d often joke that he could probably recite the whole book by heart at this point. Sitting down in a chair, he started to read. However, he couldn’t bring himself to stop thinking about what it would’ve been like if they treated you how they did Damian. The both of you were Bruce’s real children. You both even looked like clones of him! At first, Jason thought you would’ve been the favorite twin due to your personality. Even though you were twins, your personalities were polar opposites. You even refused to kill! You were trained by the League so why didn’t you kill as Damian did?
Jason knew you would benefit them greatly if you joined. You had self control, didn’t kill, could act perfectly, lie perfectly, do well under pressure, and not to mention your skills. Being raised by the League may have been torture, but you managed to gain incredible skills out of it. You could take on at least ten guys who doubled you in size and beat them within five minutes. You even bested Damian in spars and he was supposedly dubbed the “better twin” by Talia, so why hadn’t they let you join their nightly crusades like they had let Damian when the both of you first arrived?
Damian passed by your room but noticed something was off. He decided to take a look. He twisted the doorknob and pushed. The room which was once occupied by you now looked extremely plain and bare, stripped of all of its accessories. The only things left were the bed itself, multiple dressers, and a vanity. It looked as if it had been vacant the whole time. It might as well have been. Damian couldn’t really remember what it had looked like since he’s never paid much mind to it but he could tell there was a drastic difference. He knew that you disliked just leaving your room plain unlike himself and wanted at least something to make it look less boring.
He couldn’t help but wonder what had happened. Had you finally been kicked out by Bruce? Did you get shipped off to a boarding school like he had been suggesting to your father for years? He decided to go ask. He exited the room and closed the door behind him, taking off for Bruce’s office. Walking down the hall, he suddenly remembered that he had seen you leave with Jason. This meant that you were not at a boarding school like he had originally thought. But then why was your room vacant?
Instead of going to see Bruce, he decided to go see Jason and bring up the matter with him instead. He changed directions and headed to the library where he knew he’d find Jason. It was no secret that Jason was a book worm so Damian had a fifty percent chance of finding him there.
He entered the library and was immediately greeted with the sight of Jason sitting comfortably on a chair, legs crossed with a book opened in his hands. Jason didn’t bother to look up from his book as he spoke.
“What do you want Demon Spawn?”
“I’ve come to obtain the whereabouts of my sister.”
“You mean my sister?”
“She’s not your sister!” Damian exclaimed.
“Well I act more like a brother than you do.”
“Where is Y/N? Her whole room is bare.”
“That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
“Just tell me, you imbecile!” Damian said, growing increasingly frustrated by Jason’s blunt answers.
“She’s not here.”
“Then where is she?”
“Not here.”
“Just tell me already Todd, I have no time for your foolish games!”
“She moved out.” Jason said, giving in.
“What?! Where.” Damian demanded.
“Why would I tell you?”
“Because I demand to know!”
“Okay and?”
“Tell me!”
“No.”
“Why not!”
“Because you don’t even care.”
“And you do?”
“Yes, I actually do Damian! I’m there for her when she needs me the most. I’m there for her while she’s watching you live the perfect life that she’s just a background character in! While you and the others ignore that she even exists! I’m there for her when she breaks down and has panic attacks! And what were you all doing to try and help her? Nothing! Absolutely nothing!” Jason snapped.
“Y/N’s fine, I know my twin!” Damian screamed.
“Do you even know what her favorite color is?” Jason questioned in a harsh tone.
“...” Was Damian’s reply.
“Exactly! You don’t! You and the others have never cared about her, so why all of a sudden do you care now? You don’t know anything about her so don’t act like you do!” Jason then stood up and walked out of the room in a fit of rage.
Damian stood there, shocked. Had Jason just refused to answer his question? He was about to follow him but decided against it. Why was Damian going to chase Jason down just for her? She was just an annoyance, a mistake, imperfect. He had been wanting to get rid of her for so long, so why doesn’t he feel relieved? Why does he feel guilty? He decided to stop dwelling on it and get on with life. He figured it would happen eventually if it hadn’t happened then.
---
It had been a year since that day. The day you left your old life behind and started a new life, a better one. One where you weren’t constantly ignored. One where you actually had more than one person care about you. Instead of seeing yourself as a failure and disappointment, you now saw yourself as an amazing person (which you always were). You had been going to a community college in Star City. You made many friends there and started up a music career with three of them.
Their names were f/n, f/n and f/n. You all started off by taking random gigs anywhere you could. You performed covers of songs and would receive standing ovations all the time. Seeing as your group was well liked, you decided to write and produce your own songs. At the age of 19, Y/G/N released their first album. It went viral within a day and everyone was talking about it. After a week, several articles were posted, praising your work. News Stations talked about all the records Y/G/N managed to break. People started to stream it like crazy, and you couldn’t be happier with all the positive feedback you were receiving.
You had been a Wayne once, meaning you had experience in dealing with the media. Since you had already been used to it, you knew you’d all eventually be invited to interviews. So, when you had received an email stating how N/S wanted a one on one interview with you, you weren’t sure how to feel. You weren’t looking forward to interviews with your whole group, let alone one where you would be alone. You knew how unfiltered interviewers could be and didn’t feel comfortable with it.
However, you decided it would be best to go. So here you were, sitting in front of the interviewer in an uncomfortable chair preparing for the interview to start. You had somehow managed to keep a smile plastered on your face the entire time while you were a nervous wreck on the inside. You hoped none of the questions would be sexist as they usually were towards women. However, you had no more time to think about that. You heard clicking, signaling that you were about to go live. Once you heard the last click, you knew you were live and the interview had begun.
“Hello everyone, welcome back to N/S. My name is Jerald Tangleberry and I’m here today with songwriter, singer, and celebrity, Y/N Wayne! How are you?”
You waved to the camera and then answered, “Hello everyone! I’m doing good, how about you?”
“I’m doing great, thanks for asking! So by now I’d assume everyone knows that you’ve released an album with your group. How does it feel to gain more fame?”
“It doesn’t feel any different. Fame wasn’t our goal when we released the album. It was to express ourselves.”
“Mhm, well Ms. Wayne, what inspired you to write songs?”
“Well we know people may be in a tough spot in their life right now and want them to know they aren’t alone.”
“That’s so true. Some fans have been speculating that every member has three songs that specifically relate to them since there are twelve songs in total and three of the songs have the same group member as the introduction part of the song. Is this true?”
“Yes, it is true.”
“So all three of your songs relate to family issues of some sort. Is that hinting that you have family issues?”
“Yes, actually. My family isn’t the best. They ignored me all the time, even when they weren't busy. The only person who didn’t was Jason.”
“You’re saying it in the past tense.”
“I moved out about a year ago. When I was around 14, I suffered from anorexia. My family would always ignore me since they were either busy doing work or hanging out with each other. The only family member that acknowledged me was Jason. I assumed it was because there was something wrong with me. I started to hate myself so much to the point of starvation. One day, I passed out right before a gala and my oldest brother Dick found me passed out on the floor. They took me to the hospital and when I woke up, Bruce, Dick, Tim, and Damian started fussing about how I’d ruin their image if the media knew what actually happened. They started to yell at me and told me how I was a useless burden. I started to have a panic attack so I kicked them out. Jason stayed behind with me and comforted me. Ever since then I made a planed to save enough money so I could move out when I turned 18, which I did.”
“Oh, wow. So Jason was the only one who interacted with you?”
“Yeah.”
“Looks like the Wayne family isn’t as perfect as they seem.”
“No family is actually perfect.”
“Did your family try contacting you at all after they found out about Y/G/N?”
“Not yet. They’re probably too busy or don’t care.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“It’s alright, I got over it. What’s the next question.”
“Oh-” He cleared his throat and continued the interview. (So basically I don’t wanna bore you all lol)

Jason had woken up late into the afternoon that day. Patrol that morning had exhausted him. There was a huge breakout at Arkham they had assisted with. They successfully locked up every escapee, so today, Jason just wanted to relax until it would be time for patrol again. Even though he was exhausted, he knew he couldn’t take a break. The others wouldn’t and it would be unfair to them if he did.
He headed over to his couch with his phone and a bowl of popcorn in hand, ready to watch random movies the entirety of the day. He set down his phone on the coffee tables and grabbed the TV remote. When he turned on the TV, he almost dropped the popcorn and remote. You were sitting on a chair, giving an award winning smile while you politely answered the man’s questions. He was baffled. He didn’t know why you were being interviewed, let alone on TV at all! You made it clear you didn’t want to have any relations with your family any longer and you couldn’t stand publicity, so what were you doing?
He placed the bowl down and snatched his phone off the table. Unlocking his phone, he quickly dialed your phone number. However, he realized that the interview was live and that he would be interrupting it if he called you then. Deciding to wait, he placed his phone back down, picked up the bowl, and then got comfortable.

Day 58: Voicemail
Harry's mobile rang, interrupting a perfectly nice (if solitary) dinner at home with a good book.
With a sigh, he put his bookmark in his book, set his fork down in his bowl of pasta, and dug his phone out of his pocket. He looked at the screen and huffed at the unknown number, "Bloody spam call," he grumbled, tossing the phone onto the couch beside him.
He picked up his fork once more and opened his book.
He hadn't read more than two paragraphs when his phone pinged, notifying him that the caller had left a voicemail. Pointedly, he turned away from the phone and went back to reading; he made it a few more pages, his pasta bowl almost empty, when his phone started ringing again.
The same number was calling again. He scowled and ignored it, going back to his book and letting it ring out. He wasn't especially surprised when he got the notification that whoever was calling had left him another voicemail.
After that, his phone was blissfully silent as he continued reading. When he finished his book he set it down on the side table and stretched until there was a satisfying pop in his lower back.
He glanced at his phone, his curiosity winning out, and reached for it to play back the voicemails.
"Potter? Are you there?" a drunken voice slurred, and Harry knew that voice but he couldn't possibly believe that the person it sounded like had a muggle phone and even if he did, it didn't make sense that he'd be calling Harry. "Oh I can never understand these stupid things. Am I supposed to push a button so you can hear me? This is Draco Malfoy, so if you can hear me, you'd better speak up."
To say that Harry was shocked would be an understatement.
(Read more below the cut)
"You know I don't understand how to make this work," he whined at Harry, "Can't you help me? Isn't that what you do?"
Harry huffed.
"Fine. Don't talk to me. You're the one who's missing out. I'm hanging up now, Potter."
He shook his head and hit delete on the voicemail before opening the next one.
"Potter," he greeted again and Harry almost laughed because he didn't know how it was possible to sound so drunk and so posh at the same time. "I've been informed that you were not, in fact, on the other end of the string...wire?... line?..." he trailed off and this time Harry did laugh.
"Whatever. None of those words make any sense. Anyway, I was told I left you a recording of my voice. You're welcome."
Harry laughed again, ridiculous man.
"So, since you weren't being rude before, I thought I would call to present you my offer. I am out at a club dancing and drinking with Pansy, and I couldn't help but wonder what you might be doing. I'm going to guess that you are finishing a terrible detective novel while you sit on your sofa eating dinner by yourself."
He rolled his eyes, "I like my detective novels, thank you."
"And I know you're probably rolling your eyes and extolling the many virtues of your paperback novels, but they're absolute drivel, Potter, you must know that."
It was ridiculous to be fond of this man. Utterly and completely ridiculous, but Harry was nothing if not fond of Draco Malfoy.
"Anyway, I bet that your cat hasn't even joined you on the sofa. Magnus has much better taste in literature than you do."
Magnus was currently resting on his cat tower, but if he'd been asked, Harry wouldn't have admitted it.
"The point I'm trying to make, is that you are living a lonely, miserable life. So you should come out dancing with me. And I know," he carried on, "that you would say that you don't dance but I can teach you."
He smiled at the phone, gripping it a little tighter as he imagined that scenario playing out in his mind.
"And then, you can take me home with you at the end of the night."
Harry promptly choked on his saliva. Draco Malfoy couldn't be implying what he thought he was implying.
"What's your bed like, Potter? Is it soft? Is it red?" he asked aghast. "Maybe we should come back to mine instead. You'd look so lovely on my green sheets." He trailed off with a wistful little sigh. "Or. Just call me back and tell me to leave the club right now. Tell me to floo over and maybe we won't make it past the living room. Maybe on that hideous sofa. Hell maybe we won't make it past that garish rug."
There was a short pause and Harry wondered if Draco was imagining it like he was.
"I'm dying to kiss you." he murmured. "Surely you see it, surely you know. And I'll be anything you want me to be, Harry. Anything. Because you must know that I-"
The voicemail ended abruptly and Harry glared at the phone. What happened? He opened the voicemail box again and a notification popped up. His mailbox was full. Of all the rotten luck.
And he had no idea where the other man was and even if he had known, did it really make sense to go there anyway?
He listened to the voicemail, then he listened to it again.
And again.
He listened and he fell a little bit more in love with Draco Malfoy and he knew that even if he had known where he was, he wouldn't have gone, because he didn't want to be something the other man regretted in the morning.
After retrieving Magnus from the cat tower, he carried him into his bedroom and decided to deal with everything in the morning.
----------------
Harry slept very poorly that night and when 7:30 rolled around Harry couldn't stand it for one more second. He stuffed his feet into his trainers, pulled a sweatshirt over his head, and apparated to Draco's front door, pounding on it before he could stop himself.
He waited for a long moment and when there was no response, he pounded again.
The door swung open while he was still knocking, revealing a very tired, very grumpy Draco Malfoy in nothing more than a pair of boxers, "What the fuck." He stared at Harry as if he couldn't quite believe his eyes. "What are you doing here at this ungodly hour?"
"What were you going to say?"
"Potter, I am in no mood for your bullshit; I am tired, I am hungover, and it is bloody early. You're going to need to start making sense. Right now."
"You said, 'I'll be anything you want me to be, Harry. Anything. Because you must know that I-' and then my voicemail was full and I couldn't hear anything more."
All of the color drained from Draco's face, "I think I'm going to be sick." He turned around and stumbled back inside, but he left the door open so Harry took that as an invitation to enter.
Draco was serious, apparently, about getting sick because he made a beeline for the bathroom and Harry heard him vomiting before he reached the doorway.
"Oh," he murmured sympathetically, making his way over and gathering Draco's shoulder-length hair in his hand to keep it out of his face. He rubbed soothing circles on his back as he heaved up the contents of his stomach which truthfully smelled like pure vodka.
"Go away," Draco finally groaned when he'd managed to stop dry heaving and flush the toilet. "Just leave me to die. That would be preferable."
"Stop being dramatic," he said as he stood and moved toward his medicine cupboard. "I'm sure that a potions master has a hangover potion lying around here somewhere." He dug through until he found a bottle and handed it over to Draco.
Draco took it, wincing as the pain of the hangover he would have had hit him all at once. He shuddered, "Fucking Pansy," he grumbled. "Thank you for your assistance, you've done you're duty to help those less fortunate than you, you may go."
"Not likely," he replied. "Why don't you shower and get cleaned up? I'll make some breakfast and we can talk."
Draco groaned, "Let me die."
Harry rolled his eyes, "You have ten minutes, then I'm coming in and dragging you out."
He made his way to Draco's kitchen and made some scrambled eggs and toast for both of them, as well as coffee.
Draco appeared after nine minutes and fifty-two seconds. "Please, Potter," he groaned, "Can't you just drop it. I promise never to drunk dial you again," he added as he slid into a chair and took a sip of his coffee.
"Draco what was the end of that sentence?" Harry asked.
The other man picked up his slice of toast and took a bite, "I don't know. I was drunk off my arse."
"Don't lie to me," Harry replied. "I'm not stupid."
Draco's eyes flicked up to meet his, "I know that."
"Please," Harry whispered, "What was the end of that sentence?"
"You aren't going to let it go are you?"
He shook his head.
Draco's shoulders slumped, "I am in love with you," he whispered. "That's the end of that sentence. And usually I have enough of a sense of self preservation and dignity not to just go spouting that sort of nonsense to someone who couldn't possibly feel the same-"
"But I do!" Harry exclaimed. "I do feel the same. I have for absolutely ages."
"You don't have to lie to me-"
"Do you remember that trivia night we went to eight months ago," Harry interrupted, "the one where everyone else bailed?"
"Yes."
"I knew," Harry said, "I knew that night that I was completely besotted with you. We were the worst team there."
Draco rolled his eyes, "Right. Everyone falls in love with someone who's a complete idiot about a subject school children could play better."
"I fell in love with someone who didn't take himself seriously. Who laughed at getting the answers wrong, who was clever and funny, and made up answers a hundred times better than the real ones." He looked down at his hands, steeling himself to say something hard but real, "Things are hard for me sometimes," he confessed. "I get stuck in my head and it's not," he swallowed, "Not always good."
Draco's hand found his across the table.
Harry looked up, "But I don't feel like that when I'm with you. I can't remember the last time I'd laughed like that before that night. And I'm not trying to put pressure on you," he added, "I see a mind healer, I'm not asking you to fix me," he said. "Just, when I'm with you I feel like there's something to look forward to." He swallowed and Draco waited patiently for him to continue, "And I couldn't let myself imagine that you might want someone broken like me, I wanted to be better before I let myself even think about it. But then you left me that messa-"
"You're not broken," Draco murmured, bringing Harry's knuckles to his lips and pressing a chaste kiss to them that left Harry breathless. "The war changed all of us and we all have healing and growing to do from that, but you aren't broken. You're enough as you are right now."
"You don't know what my bad days are like," Harry said.
Draco shrugged, "And you don't know what my bad days are like, but you're not holding them against me."
Harry rubbed the back of his neck.
"I really like you," Draco confessed. "A lot. And I know that things aren't always going to be easy, but if we wait for either of us to be perfect before we try, we'll wait our entire lives." He swallowed and Harry watched his throat bob with the motion, "Could we maybe try healing and growing together?"
"I'd like that," Harry whispered.
"Good," Draco replied before standing up and moving around the table to straddle Harry's lap, "Then I'm going to need you to kiss me."
"I can do that," he replied, cupping Draco's cheek and leading his mouth down to his.
Their breakfast got cold but neither of them could bring themselves to care.

Prompt - Staying Inside
Notes - This was so much fun to write! I wrote this today after reading over the comments on my last few posts and, Eleanor, I have to thank you for giving me an idea to add toward the end! I feel like it worked perfectly with what I had already written and wanted to sneak it in for you, haha. I hope you like it!
The Birch family living room was silent apart from the rapid clacking as finger met key. After the jump she had ever-so-gracefully landed a few days prior, Vivien O’Brian was forced to stay off the ice and practically off the ground too. Her sprained foot and ankle gave cause for concern as the girl had a couple of upcoming performances, not only with Riven on the ice, but also with the high school color guard and the theatre troop she was a part of. With all of her deadlines creeping up on her like Bentley’s attempts at jump-scaring her and Royce, Vivien couldn’t afford to spend any time doing anything other than resting her leg. Her school had the option of online learning for those who were sick or injured, so she took full advantage of what was available. The only thing was, her parents had to drive her to and from the Birch house every day before they left for work so she wasn’t alone all day.
Mack and Brady had been very accepting of Vivien’s presence since the girl practically lived there anyway, the only difference was that she was now there all through her usual skate practice times and all through the school day. Vivien was grateful they had allowed her to stay over. Her and Loki, that is. The giant Saint Bernard had made himself comfortable in front of the fireplace, sprawled across the floor so that nobody could join him. Every time the dog heard someone enter the living room, he would sit at attention, watching them like a hawk to make sure they didn’t get close to his Vivien. He wasn’t much of a guard dog, but he was protective and his growl could be considered menacing if Vivien didn’t tell him to stop.
Vivien’s fingers flew across the keyboard of her laptop as she worked on her assignment for history class. Her teacher, Mr. Brunner, was a laid-back guy who was also in charge of the photography and Dungeons and Dragons clubs. He made his history class interesting by allowing the class to watch movies and clips of shows from times they were working on in class and comparing them to what actually happened. Even though she could have easily transferred to Advanced Placement History, Vivien had been in Mr. Brunner’s history class since freshman year and loved his way of hands-on teaching far more than the AP History teacher, Mr. Shepherd’s boring, by-the-books-and-nothing-else way of teaching. Her friends that had transferred always complained about the man being an awful, opinionated, and strict teacher who locked the door to his class as soon as the bell rang and hardly ever accepted excuses unless they were from his favorite students.
Vivien’s history assignment was a free-for-all where all she had to do was interview someone about their life in a different decade and write a short story about a day in their life. Of all the people she could have chosen to interview, she chose Carrie. She had spent the previous day asking Carrie any questions she could think of, recording the conversation with her phone and making sure to ask every question she could about an average day in the life of superstar actress, Caroline Cole. After spending half the afternoon sorting through the questions and answers, taking out useless information, and organizing the list into a coherent storyline, Vivien wrote it all down in a notebook Royce had bought her for her birthday. Vivien had already mostly filled it with script and novel ideas she might never even get the chance to work on, but she had enough space to fill the last few pages of it with information about Carrie.
Before getting up to make breakfast, Mack and Brady had joined Vivien for a while in the living room, sitting on the opposite side of the couch and reading together, but Vivien was so in the zone that she barely acknowledged their presence. Lela had come downstairs around seven, taking the time to sit and play with Loki by the fireplace before asking Vivien if she could take him for a walk. That was the first time in two hours that Vivien had looked up from her keyboard long enough to do anything more than drink whatever she had put in the metal water bottle she had brought with her. She set her computer aside and dug Loki’s leash out of her backpack before handing it to Lela with a Ziplock baggie of treats and some bags for the walk. After telling her different instructions Loki knew and making sure he responded to Lela just as well as he did with her, Vivien watched them leave and immediately went back to typing.
Royce and Bentley were next to make their appearances known, talking animatedly about something Bentley had a dream about as they made their way down the stairs to the main floor of the cabin. Bentley jumped over the back of the couch on one side of Vivien while Royce took the other side, pressing a kiss to his girlfriend’s cheek as she worked. “Good morning,” Royce said softly as Vivien continued typing like a madman.
“Morning,” she replied quickly.
Royce and Bentley leaned forward so they could see each other past Vivien and her computer. With a shrug, Bentley offered, “Do you want to play some Rocket League when you’re done?”
It took Vivien a while to answer, her eyes following the letters on the screen as they appeared, but once she realized the question was directed toward her, she glanced over at Bentley and asked, “Huh?” Before Bentley could restate his question, Vivien nodded and went back to her laptop, “Oh, yeah, sure. I could do Rocket League. Might take a while for me to finish, so you two can play for now, if you want.”
Royce watched as Bentley stood from the couch and headed for the bins on either side of the fireplace where the gaming things and cases of movies were kept. After watching his brother set up the Playstation, Royce turned to Vivien and watched her type faster than he’d seen her go before. “How long have you been working on that?”
“Since last night,” she breathed. “Started as soon as I had it all organized, but Mom stopped me at two this morning so I could get some sleep.”
“How long have you been working on it today?”
“Since I got here at five-thirty.”
Glancing to the corner of Vivien’s computer screen at the tiny clock above the date, Royce sighed; it was already almost eight. If what she said was correct and she had, in fact, stopped writing at two and got here at five-thirty, that meant that she was running on three hours of sleep, give or take. Placing a hand on Vivien’s arm, Royce softly admonished her, “Vivi, you need sleep.”
Normally cheerful green eyes were bloodshot and glassy as Vivien spared a glance at her boyfriend. “No, I need Red Bull and to get this project done. It’s almost done.”
A gentle, almost statically charged shock greeted Royce as he took Vivien’s hand in his with a sigh, “Vivien.”
Vivien huffed, tossing her head back so she stared at the ceiling, “I need to get this done as soon as possible. It counts toward both my English and my History classes and is a huge chunk of my grade because of how long it is. If I can write out two more pages by the time my class would be in lunch, I could raise both of my grades enough to qualify me for early graduation and my associate’s degree.”
“You’re in high school,” Bentley stated curiously. “How are you going to get a degree early?”
“I’m in the vocational programs for history and creative writing,” she answered. “We attend college classes every other week and, once I graduate, I get an associate’s degree for both.” With a heavy sigh, Vivien looked back at her computer screen and shook her head at the eight pages she had managed to write since she began typing after lunch the day before. “I need two more pages before I can send this to Mr. Brunner and, even then, I’d have to go back through and edit the whole thing.”
“Why not take a break and get some breakfast into you?” Royce suggested, rubbing circles into the back of Vivien’s hand with his thumb. “You deserve a break.”
Vivien’s shakily exhaled breath almost convinced Royce that she was willing to take a break, but the firm shake of her head squashed the idea like a bug under a newspaper. “I only have two pages left and I can finish them in about an hour if I really focus on it.” Turning to her boyfriend, Vivien gave him her best smile and said, “I just need an hour. After that, you can take my computer away and I’ll edit it later.”
Royce didn’t want to let her continue, especially with her looking so exhausted and drained, but as long as she actually rested once the hour was up, he could handle that. “Promise you’ll actually rest later?”
With a nod, Vivien tightened her grip on his hand and said, “I promise. Now, you two have fun and I’m going to go back to work, alright?”
Royce hummed and let go of Vivien’s hand, accepting the controller Bentley handed him and turning toward the TV as he started the game. As the game started, Royce continued sparing glances at his girlfriend, making sure she was alright as he and Bentley began racing their cars toward the giant soccer ball they would have to fight the other team for. He just hoped that Vivien would be alright and, more than anything, she would keep her promise once the end of the hour came. He didn’t want to fight with her over something so trivial.
Before Vivien knew it, the hour was up and, in the middle of typing her final paragraph, her laptop was snatched away from her by someone much quicker and much taller than the person she had expected to take it. “Miles!” she screeched, propelling herself off of the couch. In an instant, the laptop was forgotten and a searing pain scorched from her foot up to the bottom of her spine. At once, Miles shifted the laptop to one arm and lowered Vivien back to the couch cushions with the other.
“Get that leg back up, kiddo,” he ordered.
“Alright, alright.” Once Vivien had lifted her leg back onto the coffee table where they had set up a pillow and a heating pad for her, she sighed, “Thank you. Now, can I please have my computer back? I was almost done with the last paragraph.”
“You said that three paragraphs ago,” Carrie commented from the other side of the couch where she was busy filing and painting her nails.
“Not helping,” Vivien huffed, sending the blonde a sharp stare.
Carrie only shrugged and returned to the glittery polish hed between her thumb and index fingers. Miles chuckled as he handed the computer off to Royce over the back of the couch, “You need to relax, Viv. You’re a smart kid, I’m sure you can see the reason behind us making you rest.”
Taking in a long breath and letting out a heavy sigh, Vivien said, “I can, but that doesn’t mean I like it.”
“Nobody likes being told what to do,” Royce commented from behind the couch, making sure the laptop was kept out of his girlfriend’s reach. As she tipped her head back to look at him, Royce pressed a light kiss to her forehead and softly told her, “I’ll work on the editing while you rest. When I’m done, you can finish up, alright?”
“You’d really do that for me?” Vivien mumbled, glancing blearily up at Royce.
“I would do anything for you,” was Royce's reply. “All you have to do is ask.”
Vivien smiled, “That goes both ways, you know?”
Royce chuckled, “I know. Now, get some rest.”
“Yeah,” Miles said with a grin. “You better get some rest or we’ll sic the warden on you.”
“‘The warden?’’ Vivien snorted, sparing a glance at the slumbering giant whose slobber was puddling on the wooden floor under him. “If you’re talking about Loki, he’s not going to do much other than lay on top of me and lick me to death.”
Miles shook his head, a knowing, mischievous look glimmering in his icy eyes. “Loki isn’t the warden.”
“I am,” came a voice to Vivien’s right. Glancing to the side, Vivien met gazes with the blue-eyed blonde who had just tightened the cap of her glittery gold nail polish and set it back into the bag she had pulled it from. Carrie’s smirk was enough to make Vivien swallow thickly, a feeling of defeat building inside of the teenager.
Glancing back at Miles, Vivien sighed, “I’m not going to be able to get away with shit today, am I?”
“Not with her around,” Miles said with a shake of his head as he made his way toward the kitchen for another cup of coffee. “Good luck, kid.”
As Royce and Miles left for the kitchen - Miles in search of coffee and Royce to make up a plate of food for Vivien - Vivien watched as Carrie zipped her makeup bag shut and shuffled closer to her. “So,” Vivien began, “why did they stick you with me?”
Carrie scoffed, patting the girl’s good leg as she sidled up beside her, “They didn’t stick me with you, I asked to stay with you.”
“Why?”
“Why not?”
Vivien sighed, “I just figured you would’ve rather liked spending time with Miles or something more than hanging out with some teenager.”
“You’re not just some teenager, Vivi,” Carrie said, turning so she had one leg bent on the couch. “You’re my friend. Besides, you need some girl time and someone who won’t let you get away with stuff because you bat your little eyelashes and flirt with him.”
Vivien’s face burned as she tried to argue, “I don’t do that!”
Carrie hummed, “Sure you don’t. Just like I don’t when it comes to Miles.” The look of defeat on Vivien's face made Carrie smile as she nodded, “Yeah, I’m not dumb. I know all the tricks of the trade.”
“I really can’t get away with anything if you’re around, can I?” Vivien sighed.
“Nope!” Carrie giggled, proudly popping the ‘p’ sound. “Now, I was thinking, while everyone else is out Christmas shopping or whatever else they have to do, we could do a spa day.”
Vivien had never been to a spa before - the closest thing she had was the sauna at the gym and the ice baths she would take after volleyball practice in the summer. “What, exactly, does a spa day entail?”
“Well,” Carrie drawled, “Mick and I just got these face mask things at the mall the other day and she has an entire line of lotions that are just collecting dust in her bathroom, so I figured we could put up our hair, relax, and do some at-home facials for the day.”
“That actually sounds like a lot of fun,” Vivien chuckled as Royce brought her a plate of food he knew she liked.
“I hope it lives up to your expectations, then,” the blonde said with a grin. “I do have one condition, though.”
Vivien sighed as she stabbed a piece of pancake with her fork, “Of course, you do.”
“You have to do your physical therapy stuff first.”
“Of course, I do.”
By the time Vivien had finished eating and completed the exercises she had been taught for her leg, almost everyone was occupied with shopping, reading, or, in Royce’s case, editing. While Vivien was busy, Carrie had brought out the face masks she had bought, taken some of the lotion bottles from the bathroom Mick and Butchy shared, and piled a plate full of cookies that had been made the night before. The arrangement of everything was put out on the coffee table in a haphazardly organized array and, after taking the time to decide who wanted what, the girls set about on their mission of relaxation.
The first thing Carrie insisted on was making sure their hair was out of their faces. After letting Vivien brush out her hair, Carrie braided it out of her face and used a hairband to slide any stray hairs away from the girl’s eyes. Since she had no clue how to make a braid, Vivien had a fun time attempting to wrangle Carrie’s curls into something half-decent, but eventually settled on a bun that she secured with a silky scrunchie. Even though Vivien apologized for such a messy hairstyle when the blonde had done such a great job on her, Carrie brushed it off with a wave of her hand and told the teenager that she loved it anyway.
Despite telling Carrie she was more than capable of putting on her face mask herself, Vivien found herself resting back against the couch with the blonde painting the hot cocoa-scented face mask on her skin with such a light hand that she barely felt Carrie’s movements. Once her mask was done, Carrie wiped off the paint brush they were using to put the masks on and handed it to Vivien along with the gingerbread-scented one she had wanted to use before laying back on the couch with her head as close to Vivien as she could manage.
Vivien was glad she was getting to spend time with Carrie one-on-one. There were others in the room, of course - Royce was editing her assignment at the island off of the wall separating the kitchen and living room, Miles was drawing something in a sketchbook with Bentley, and Lela was watching something on her phone - but it felt like she and Carrie were spending alone time together. Vivien didn’t usually get a lot of one-on-one time with other girls. Sure, she had Abby who used to be practically up her ass all the time, but they never really spent time doing stereotypically “girly” things. Most of the time, they were studying, working in the vineyard, or training together for competitions. Over time, it seemed as though Abby was more interested in her gaggle of friends to spend much time with her older sister. Outside of family members, Mick was the first friend who had taken Vivien in as a little sister. They had known each other for as long as Vivien could remember and, since the beginning, their sibling-like bond was strong. The two of them did everything they could together when Mick was visiting New Hampshire, but it was hard to bond much when the older girl had a whole other world of people to care about. Carrie was new to Vivien. A whole new person to bond with and love who she hadn’t grown up knowing or been made to love due to being blood-related. Vivien wasn’t about to complain about having the opportunity, though. She needed a day to just hang out with a friend.
“This is kind of nice,” Vivien said with a grin as she slathered a glob of the gingerbread face mask on Carrie’s forehead.
“I knew you’d have fun with it,” the blonde muttered, attempting to keep her mouth closed while Vivien worked.
“I am.” As Vivien smoothed out a layer of the mask on Carrie’s skin, she said, “I think I needed this, you know.” One of Carrie’s eyes peeled open and she raised an eyebrow at the girl curiously. As though answering the girl’s question, Vivien took in a deep breath and sighed, “There is this insane competition this month that Riven and I are waiting for an invitation for. If we get a letter in the mail, it will tell us where the competition is. If we don’t, it means we didn’t qualify. It’s a lot of stress on top of school, my spot in the color guard, and my role as Irene Molloy in Hello Dolly.”
As Vivien swiped the extra mask back into the container it came in, Carrie sat up and said, “I know how awful such a busy schedule can be.”
“I bet you do,” Vivien sighed. “With your acting and all, you must be busy all the time.”
Carrie shrugged as she turned on the video of calming music Vivien had picked out, “It comes and goes. Once you find a solid way to balance everything out, things get a lot easier to deal with and you get more time to yourself and the people you love.”
“I think I’m still working on that whole balance thing,” Vivien chuckled.
“You’ll get there.”
With a small smirk, Vivien nodded, “I sure hope so.”
Carrie took the younger girl’s hands in hers and squeezed them, her signature smile beaming so brightly Vivien worried about it burning her retinas, but it was reassuring all the same. “You will.”
Vivien smiled in return and followed the actress into relaxing with her head resting against the back of the couch and her eyes sliding closed, allowing the music to lull them into a sense of serenity until their masks were done setting. Hearing the gentle music over his headphones, Royce, tugged one earbud out and turned toward the living room, finding Vivien and Carrie sitting with their heads toward the ceiling, colorful paste on their faces, and Vivien’s right hand in Carrie’s left, a smile on both girls’ faces. Royce felt a smile tug at his lips as he watched them, he was glad someone was keeping Vivien relaxed. She needed the break. With any luck, she would pass out exactly like she was and would get at least some sleep before her parents came to pick her up. Smiling to himself, Royce turned back to the project at hand, having only a couple of pages to go through before reaching the end of the writing Vivien had done.
After a while, the timer went off and Carrie helped a drowsy Vivien clean up her face before diving into the nail polish and lotion they had picked out earlier. When she finally was awake enough to be aware of her surroundings, Vivien was surprised to note that almost everyone had disappeared, leaving the two of them alone in the living room. While Vivien watched Carrie paint a tiny flower on her ring finger, she asked, “Hey, Carrie?” The blonde hummed, attempting to focus on the artwork she was doing. “You remember those TikToks I was showing you the other day?”
“Those are the short videos on your phone, right?” Carrie asked as she came up for more paint.
“Yeah,” Vivien confirmed. Carrie nodded in understanding. “Well, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to make some with me?”
“I’m not sure how we would go about it, but sure,” Carrie said with a smile. “No dancing ones until your leg is better, though.”
“Of course not,” Vivien agreed.
“Alright,” Carrie nodded. “Once your nails are dry, we’ll find something you want to make.”
“Actually,” Vivien began with a hesitant, but hopeful smile, “I think I already have something in mind.”
By the time everyone was home from shopping or done with what they needed to get done around the house, Vivien and Carrie were sitting on the couch, laughing and talking like old friends. The pair watched Vivien’s cell phone for a few seconds before muttering something to each other and giggling as though they had seen something hysterical. After a while of this happening, Mick asked, “What are you two doing?”
Carrie turned to Vivien with a grin before replying, “Watching TikTok.”
“Is it that Dylan guy baking weird recipes again?” Butchy asked as he found a spot on the couch to call his own.
Vivien giggled, “No, we watched him earlier. We’re watching ones that we made while you guys were off doing other things.”
Miles nudged his girlfriend over the back of the couch, “What happened to you making her rest?”
“She was resting,” Carrie claimed, “while also being my camerawoman and director.”
Vivien quickly turned the TV on over the mantle, scrolled down past the videos they had posted earlier, and connected her phone to the screen so everyone could see what she was watching. As the rest of the family piled in on the couch and found a place to sit, Vivien and Carrie smiled at each other in giddy anticipation. “Ready?” Vivien asked, making sure everyone gave a sign of agreement before scrolling to the first video they had posted. It wasn’t the first one they had made, but it required the least amount of editing.
The video was of Carrie in an all-black dress they borrowed from Mick’s closet, dancing to Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga the same way as Wednesday Addams had in the show the family had recently started watching. A few other videos were just the two girls acting out different songs, but the last one they posted, the one that they spent the most time editing due to them just sitting and laughing every few seconds, was one showing pictures of Butchy with the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song Anti-Hero in the background. The words on top of the pictures were, “Why is he always so grumpy?” A heavy sigh came from Butchy as he rolled his eyes, but he stopped as soon as the pictures and words disappeared and Carrie appeared, turning around to face the camera with a beaming smile as she mouthed the lyrics, “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem, it’s me.”
Butchy let out a bark of laughter, “Damn straight!”
Carrie turned to Vivien and, as soon as the pair locked eyes, they burst into hysterical laughter, leaning into each other and revealing their inner hyenas. The more they laughed, the more everyone wondered what was so funny. With everyone else’s eyes on them, Carrie and Vivien eased themselves back to normal, eventually getting ahold of themselves enough for them to laugh out, “We knew he’d say that!” before their laughter picked up once again, earning a round of laughter from the rest of the people in the house.

Don't Panic
After half a year of dating Spencer, you're surprised to learn that you might be pregnant.
Cisgender female!reader
2.1k - warnings: vomiting, light concussion
You aren't one for baby fever. Really, you aren't. Kids were always more of an abstract idea, a someday rather than something you wanted now. You certainly haven't had the conversation with Spencer, even if seeing him with kids always ignites something warm and foreign in your belly. He's so soft with them, breaking out a smile you never see if a kid isn't present. Henry is obsessed with him, doing grabby hands anytime the two of you go over to JJ and Will's. Spencer complies every time, picking him up and spending most of the night playing with him.
"He's going to be a wonderful dad," JJ said to you once, a little wine drunk. You had just nodded.
None of that prepares you for the positive pregnancy test in front of you.
You'd taken it on a whim. The past couple weeks, you've just felt off. Spencer’s been hovering around you, nervous hands always a second away. He'd only gotten more worried after you’d thrown up at a crime scene. It wasn't particularly graphic and you have a strong stomach. Throwing up at a crime scene wasn't something you did.
"Oh god," you whisper to yourself, staring at the test in front of you. Some nonsensical part of your brain wonders if you're hallucinating, if an unsub broke into your house specifically to drug and trick you. "Calm down, girl."
One pregnancy test wasn't definitive proof. False positives were a thing, but you'd been so confident that you weren't pregnant that you only bought one. You hadn’t bothered to tell your boyfriend about this, either. God. You two were always so safe. Unprotected sex was not something you took part in.
You've been going out with Spencer for less than a year. It wasn't important that you've never been happier, wasn't important that everyone else on the BAU told you over and over again how much happier he is with you. Those things don't change the fact that it's been less than a year.
And yet.
As you place your hand on your stomach, there's a flutter of excitement. While you're a firm believer in women making the choices regarding their own bodies, you already know that if you're really pregnant, you're keeping it.
You just hope you won't have to do it alone.
…
Luck isn't on your side. You run out and grab another pregnancy test, but before you can take it, your phone starts ringing.
"No no no no," you groan, picking up the phone. "Do we have a case?"
Penelope is far too chipper on the other end of the phone. "Yep! You guys are going to debrief on the plane, so your cute butt better hurry. Hotch wants everyone seated in twenty minutes."
You close your eyes. "Okay." Before she can say anything else, you hang up.
The go bag is already in your car, so you can drive straight from the drugstore to work. Your phone buzzes again, but it's just a text from Spencer.
Saved you a seat. -SR
Like anyone would ever snatch your seat.
…
It's hard to focus on the case. It's hard to focus on anything that isn't the possible fucking baby in your stomach. You're a pretty good liar, though, so you manage to muscle your way through debriefing without most of the team noticing that you're off. You do get a concerned squint from Spencer, although that can just be a result of him thinking you're sick.
Four mutilated women. You can feel the tension radiating off of her, so you grab her hand and squeeze it. She gives you a grateful smile. As the youngest female members of the BAU, it feels like you two always look like the victims you avenge. JJ's got the added bonus of being a mother, which means kid cases hit her hard, too. But if you're pregnant, you're about to join her in that club, too. The thought makes your breath catch.
"You okay?" JJ asks. You feel Spencer's eyes focus on you.
You nod, plastering a smile on. "Yeah. Just thinking about the case. Are you?"
JJ sighs, looking over at where Morgan and Hotch are quietly discussing the most recent crime scene. "Yeah," she says. "Just, y'know. The case. And Henry's got a cold. I feel bad for leaving him and Will right now."
That's enough for Spencer's attention to shift to JJ, thankfully. You relax into your seat, scrolling through your tablet to review the information Penelope sent over. You miss most of their chatter until they pull you back into the conversation.
"Do you want to come with me, Y/N?" Spencer's asking, smiling hopefully at you.
"Oh, I wasn't listening," you admit.
Spencer's smile somehow only softens more. He knows you have a tendency to zone out, get lost in your head. When you two are alone, he likes playing with your hair to bring your mind back to him. "I'm going over to JJ and Will's house once the case is over to babysit Henry."
Your mind short circuits a little. Saying no is only going to make Spencer suspicious, since you love hanging out with Henry. But saying yes means that you won't be alone after the case and you'd have to watch Spencer be annoyingly perfect with Henry. "Sure," you say, clenching your hands together.
…
There's already another victim by the time you land, prompting Hotch to send you and Emily to check it out. Your stomach is rolling, the unused pregnancy test haunting you from its place on the jet.
"There was remorse for the other victims. They were wrapped up. Why is this woman different?" You ask, crouching next to the body. The smell hits you like a wave, but all you can do is deal with it.
Emily comes to stand beside you. "Good point. Maybe the others were surrogates for her?"
You sigh. "If that's the case-"
"-our unsub would be done killing. Or would completely switch his MO."
Standing up, you brush some of the dirt off your knees. "But let's consider some other possibilities. Maybe she fought back too much for him to feel remorseful. Or maybe she wasn't the right fit, so he just dumped her."
"I'll call Hotch."
You nod. As Emily walks off, you swallow the vomit in the back of your throat.
"Come on!" She calls a minute later, waving at you. "We're all meeting back at the station."
…
The case ends with you getting a concussion. You'd been the one to find the unsub and while you took him down, he managed to get one good hit in.
"Spence, I'm fine!" You laugh, pressed up tight against his chest. He's got his head buried in your shoulder, arms wrapped around you. He always worries too much when you're hurt. "The EMT already checked me out."
"He hurt you," he mumbles. He pulls back just enough to press a gentle kiss to the top of your head. "Stay with me tonight?"
"What about Henry?"
Spencer shakes his head. "I just want to take care of you."
Your heart aches.
On the jet, you're curled up on the couch with your head in Spencer's lap. You're really tense, and you know he's noticed. He doesn't ask you about it, though. Once you've landed, he just wordlessly follows you home.
"Are you in more pain than you told the paramedic?" He asks, leading you over to your bed.
"Just ready to get some sleep," you tell him, kissing the wrinkle forming between his eyebrows.
…
Once he’s asleep, you sneak into the bathroom and take the other pregnancy test. Your head is pounding and once again, you're nauseous, but you're desperate. Spencer isn't a heavy sleeper, so you have to be quiet and fast.
Peeing has never felt so high pressure.
It's not that you're scared by the news, but when another positive symbol pops up, you vomit again. You groan, knowing the noise is going to wake him up. Before he can come in, you grab the test and shove it in your shorts.
"Y/N?" He calls softly as he knocks on the door. "Are you okay?"
"Peachy!" You reply, laying across the toilet. "Never better. I'm thriving."
He pauses, your answer probably throwing him for a loop. It's only for a second though. He comes into the room, eyes scanning the situation. You know he hates germs. This is going to be nightmare fuel for him. Still, you aren't really expecting him to freak out.
"We have to go to the hospital."
You squint at him. "Huh?"
He sputters. "You have a concussion! It must be worse than that paramedic thought."
Oh. Right. "Spence-"
Spencer comes closer to you, lightly wrapping his arms around your midsection, aka where the pregnancy test is resting. You flinch.
"Y/N, what's wrong?" He asks, shifting so that he's looking you in the eye. His face is contorted in concern, making a wave of guilt crash through you. "What hurts?"
You shake your head before resting it on his shoulder. He hoists you up.
"What hurts?" He repeats.
Taking a deep breath, you pull back. You feel wobbly, like one breath can knock you back to the ground. "I don't think it's from the concussion."
"I know you've been sick, but I'm not willing to risk-"
"Spencer."
He stops. "What?"
Wordlessly, you unveil the test and hand it to him, then shut the toilet seat so you can sit on top of it.
You watch him as he processes. His eyes flicker from you to the test to back to you millions of times. "It's the second one I've taken."
His voice is barely above a whisper. "You're pregnant?"
You nod. "I'm pregnant."
Before you can blink, he grabs you and pulls you into a hug. He kisses your forehead. The smile on his face is wide enough to crack his lips.
"You're happy?"
"Yeah," he says. "And if…" he trails off. You know he's trying to be careful with his word choice. "It's up to you, what you want to do. But if you want to keep it-"
"I do."
He relaxes against you, pressing kisses all over your face. You laugh, gently shoving at him as you laugh.
"We should still go to the doctor," he says after a minute.
…
Once you start showing, you tell the rest of the team.
"Stop crushing her!" Spencer cries, pulling Penelope off of you. She's then replaced by JJ, who isn't trying to crush your ribcage.
"Congrats!" JJ says. "Oh, this is so exciting. I'll give you all my old pregnancy books. Although I'm sure Spence memorized them. He does know how to deliver a baby."
You look over at your boyfriend, a question on the tip of your tongue. Spencer's grinning, though. It's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen, so you forget to ask.
…
"Do you ever worry?" Emily asks.
It's girls night. You and Emily are sprawled on her couch, JJ’s drunk on the floor, and Penelope wandered off to find Sergio.
You tilt your head to the side. "About what?"
She gestures to your stomach, which you've been rubbing without even noticing. "You and Reid haven't been together that long."
Her words leave an unpleasant taste in your mouth. "Well," you start. "I can't say that we'll be together forever. But I do know that no matter what, he's going to be a fantastic father." That seems to be enough to quiet her, although your nerves are still spiked. "Do you not think we're going to last?"
"I'm not saying that," she protests. "Just hard to imagine him in a long-term relationship."
"Get used to it," you snap.
…
Spencer can tell the next afternoon that you're upset. "Love, just tell me what happened."
"Are you only staying with me because I'm pregnant?"
"What? No!" He comes closer to you, grabbing your hand. "I'm with you because we make each other happy."
You hum. Stupid pregnancy hormones are making your eyes water.
"Y/N."
"I'm fine," you lie.
His hand goes from your hand to your waist. "Tell me what I need to do to prove how much I love you. I'm not...I'm not good at this part. But anything you need, you have it. You have me."
He holds you as you cry.
…
"I love you a lot. You know that, right?" Spencer's wrapped around you, legs tangled together. You're half asleep on his chest, but you still kiss his neck as an answer.
"Love you too," you mumble. "We're going to be a family."
His hand goes to your stomach. "A family. Our family."
You love the sound of that.

On Oases
An excerpt from Memoirs of a Flesh Eater, never published
Previous Excerpt
Next Excerpt
I’ve talked a lot about the importance of safe places, of how important it is for us to be able to be our true selves. I’ve talked about how our families and the Society provide us those spaces, but I haven’t really talked about those spaces themselves yet, or how they operate. I call them oases. Kestrel calls me dramatic. She needs to lighten up {Editing Note: Does that sound funny or mean?}. As ever, though, I’m an anthropologist, and I need my definitions if I’m going to explain things clearly, so oases is what I’m going to keep calling them.
While I’m being scientific, indulge me in some definitions. An oasis is any place run by ghouls that caters to ghoulish needs or wants. I’ll subdivide those further into open oases and closed oases.
{Editing Note: As far as I know, I’m the first person to formally classify this stuff. Am I naming them right? If this book is as successful as I want it to be, these terms are going to be used forever. Should I stick my last name on one of these? Would that be egotistical?}
Whatever you first think of when you hear “safe place” or “ghoul haven” or whatever, you’re probably thinking of a closed oasis. A closed oasis is a place for ghouls and ghouls only. No humans allowed, and usually no ghouls that haven’t been invited either, given our usual security concerns. These places are usually specifically social spaces, like bars or private clubs, places specifically designed for ghouls to unwind without having to keep our true natures hidden. These places are more varied than I’ve probably made them sound, to be clear. Like, I’ve been to an all-ghoul book club meeting before.
We were reading Dracula, in case you were wondering.
The closed oasis that I’m most familiar with is a members-only poker club, at least in name. Obviously I’m not going to name it here, but a lot more goes on there than poker. They keep a bit of flesh on hand, obviously, but it’s not really an eatery. The proprietor, Goji, has done a little of everything to hear him tell it. I know he’s a damn good card shark, and I don’t know if I actually believe that he was in an all-ghoul circus, but he can actually sword-swallow. And he’s a talented tattoo artist, if a little too willing to work on drunk teenagers. Scarlet’s Shakespeare tramp stamp is exceptional, but for some reason he doesn’t like it when we tell him that {Editing Note: That might actually be too much identifying information. I don’t think that’s a common tattoo}. Spatha, on the other hand, really likes showing off the sword he did for her. I kind of wish she’d gotten it in a less intimate spot, what with how eager she is to flash it.
{Editing Note: Clean that paragraph up. The fine line between relatable and rambling keeps eluding me.}
Other than that, Goji’s place has got some nice couches and beanbags, a pretty good tv, and even a few old arcade machines. It’s just a genuinely pleasant place to unwind. It even has a pretty decent bar. Given the rest of his clientele, I don’t think serving drinks to minors counts as much of a moral quandary for him. I do wish he’d cut Scorpio off sooner, though. He’s of age now, but he gets drunk fast, and when he gets drunk he gets weepy.
Goji’s an accepting guy, though, which is mostly a blessing. Being a ghoul doesn’t make us immune to human prejudices, so it’s doubly nice to get a break from the less instantly deadly kinds of othering. We’ve met a lot of interesting people at his place, a lot of ghouls from a lot of backgrounds with a lot of stories to tell and ideas to share. Not that I’m always entirely comfortable with what they have to say. One of the advantages of a closed oasis is that it gives ghouls a place to vent their frustrations with humans, which is important, but some of the venting from the ghouls less integrated into human society, like the Hunters, goes places that I’m not comfortable with. Even if it’s just hot air, I don’t like hearing about how much better things were when “humans were our cattle.” Especially not from people who choose to kill for their food.
{Editing Note: I don’t know if it’s safe to include that here. I want to present an accurate portrait of us, not an idealized one, but I haven’t even talked about Hunters as a group yet. That might be too much, too soon, too bluntly.}
Open oases, on the other hand, are an entirely different beast. Open oases cater to humans as well as ghouls. Obviously the humans don’t know that ghouls are part of the target clientele, and they aren’t places where we can typically be fully ourselves, but they have other advantages. Open restaurants or candy shops or bakeries give us places we can go with our human friends and not have to eat food that makes us sick. Open doctors can check our teeth and claws for problems, and they can check the rest of our bodies too, for that matter - we avoid normal doctors like the plague for reasons that I hope are obvious. I even know of a few open butchers, though I’ve never needed to go to one myself.
I have, however, spent a lot of time at one particular open oasis: my patron’s shop. She runs it as a small indie bookstore with a cute little cafe attached. The cafe will serve you flesh burgers or sandwiches if you know the right signal, which makes it a decent place to meet new ghouls discreetly. I know Yaga uses it to meet other influential ghouls that she considers dangerous, since it’s too public for them to start trouble. Other than that, the shop floor just operates like a normal book store. Yaga’s fond of her collection and she likes talking to customers and making recommendations.
It’s what’s off the sale floor that makes the bookstore special. In addition to the normal storage space, Yaga maintains guest bedrooms, which she lends out to any ghouls that need a place to lay low, or just to sleep. She’s had all sorts back there - lone fugitives, feral children, sometimes whole families waiting on some fake documents to be ready. She’s especially good at getting ghouls off the streets and integrated back into human society. Kestrel was living in one of those guest rooms when I first joined the household.
I met her the summer before I returned to public school - high school, specifically - and my mom and I were still in the early stages of integrating into the household. Yaga offered to watch me while my mom was at work, and she let me hang out in the bookstore and read whatever I wanted while she handled customers. My mom ended up having to work late, though, so Yaga kept me around for dinner, and introduced me to a girl who was staying with her for awhile.
Kestrel’s about two years younger than me, we think, and her growth spurt ended up being more of a growth bump when it finally came, but even then she was tiny. She was also quiet, but I’d always wanted a younger sibling, so I didn’t let that deter me. I asked a lot of frankly insensitive questions. I wouldn’t get real answers to most of them until later, and the ones I did get aren’t really mine to share, but suffice it to say that she was a feral orphan before Yaga took her in. Yaga didn’t think she was ready to interact with the human general public unsupervised yet, but I promised to watch out for her like a really good big sister if she got to come hang out with me the next time I visited.
I didn’t get an answer that night, but when my mom dropped me off again a week later, Yaga went and got her. She didn’t really appreciate me trying to be her big sister, but she did want to be my friend. It was a little awkward at first, but I’ve always been pretty good at getting to know new people, and pretty soon she was joining me and Scarlet and Scorpio on our afternoon outings. Turns out she didn’t need the extra family anyway; Yaga formally adopted her a few years later. She’s still one of my best friends, and quiet or not, I swear she’s better adjusted than Scorpio.
Yaga isn’t the only patron out there using an open oasis as a halfway house. It’s not the most common thing in the world - it takes a certain kind of person and a fair few resources - but I think it might be the most valuable thing the oases do. No one needs a space to learn how to be themselves more than the ghouls who slip through the cracks. Kestrel is taking a gap year before she decides on college, but it wouldn’t surprise me if she takes over the shop once Yaga’s gone. I hope, one day, that I can help people like that too.
{Editing Note: I might just be paranoid, but I think that this draft makes it way too easy to find the bookshop, especially since Yaga’s masque isn’t exactly subtle. There can’t be that many indie bookstores/cafes owned by old Russian women with much younger adopted daughters. I’ll need to do some serious rewrites.}

Love, William (Bill Weasley x OC) - Chapter 5
WARNINGS: Aunt Muriel 🤭, mentions of alcohol and getting drunk
Chapter 5 - Theodora's Flying
Bill was used to the racket that woke him up every morning by now. He was hoping that the rest of his siblings had the same idea as he did – get more sleep the night before the tournament – but when he gazed at his alarm clock and saw that it was only six-thirty in the morning, he quickly realized that he was the only one.
He sighed, got up, and stretched. He heard the twins running down the stairs and he could swear he heard Charlie tickle Ginny in the hallway. At least mum wasn’t shouting this morning. That was a record – two days in a row.
He slowly opened the door of his room and popped his head out cautiously, just in case something would explode in the hallway.
“Never a dull morning, is it?”
Bill turned around toward the voice. He saw Theodora standing in the doorway of Ginny’s room, watching Charlie chase after their youngest sibling as she was squeaking not to tickle her any more.
“Yeah.” Was all he could muster.
Theodora wasn’t the first person he expected to see this morning as she was usually with the twins. He tried smiling and hoped that his untied hair was able to hide his red cheeks.
He hated that he couldn’t say one word to her without blushing or getting butterflies. But he couldn’t deny that he sort of liked it either.
—
The past few weeks have been one of the best he had in a long time. He came to terms that perhaps him having a crush on her wasn’t so bad. He hardly ever thought about the age difference between them anymore and he enjoyed spending time with her – every minute of it.
He and Theodora sneaked out a few times to watch the stars as they did that night when Charlie and Ron forced him to go after her.
He had so much fun with her and he found out so many things about her. He now understood why she was friends with the twins – they might get on his nerves sometimes but they were such good and protective friends to her.
She told him how they have been there for her every time her mum sent her a mean letter, every time she felt alone and missed her brother, every time a boy broke her heart.
He loved listening to her talk about Quidditch even though it never interested him more than a few games he played with his siblings at the Burrow. He loved to hear how she started to correspond with Charlie – asking for a piece of simple advice about her Care of Magical Creatures essay. He couldn’t stop listening to her talk so greatly and fondly about his younger siblings.
He told her about his internship in Egypt and how hard it was to become a Curse Breaker. How they don’t tell you in school what you have to go through to get the job. He told her how much he loves it and that he feels like he will never get sick of what he does.
She was the first person he felt like he could tell anything to without being judged and she seemed so interested in everything he had to say. He felt accepted talking to her and even though he didn’t like admitting it, he felt like that for the first time.
Bill still wasn’t sure how he felt about the fact of how close they got all of a sudden and he was suspicious of the twins and Charlie as they stopped teasing him and pushing him toward her. They were perfect angels and he knew them well enough to know they had to either be up to something or something between him and Theodora changed.
He caught himself waking up excited every morning to spend more time with her. He was astonished how they never ran out of things to talk about and he constantly thought of things that Theodora might find funny because he loved hearing her laugh.
Theodora surprised him when she told him what exactly she will do in the shop when she manages to open it with the twins. Bill thought that she was going to work alongside his brothers and sell their products. He didn’t expect at all that she has basically robbed the library near her home of all the books that are business-related as she decided to stay behind the scenes and run the whole thing.
She admitted that she isn’t big on exposing herself and as much as she loves all their products she doesn’t have a talent when it comes to expressing how amazing they are. The twins and she sat down and talked about it and quickly realized that they are a perfect team – she doesn’t like selling while they do and they think finances are boring but they intrigue her.
The fact that she was willing to read through dozens of books and learn about how to properly run a business made Bill fancy her even more. At this point, he stopped questioning how could she only be 17 and just accepted the fact that she was the most amazing girl he ever had a chance to meet.
—
Charlie finally took mercy on Ginny and was now chasing after Theodora. Even though Bill knew it was all harmless fun he was jealous of Charlie and wished he could be so relaxed and fun around her.
Because he didn’t want to think about how boring and pathetic he is on the day of the tournament, he decided to go down and see what all the commotion is about.
The second he stepped to the lower floor he wanted to turn around and sprint back up. He heard the twins talk to aunt Muriel. He was glad that it wasn’t him. It’s not that he didn’t like her, he did, but she scared him just as much.
He never knew what to say in front of her without insulting her or saying something she is going to comment on. She liked to correct their mistakes ever since Bill can remember and he suddenly understood why Charlie was so keen on staying upstairs – Charlie disliked her even more because she isn’t an animal lover at all and she always commented on the fact that Charlie never brought a single girl home never even willing to listen what he has to say on the topic.
Bill tip-toed to the nearby wooden pillar that separated the hallway from the living room and leaned on it to hear what the twins had to endure. Before he could focus on their conversation he heard footsteps coming down the stairs and the second Theodora saw what he was doing, she started giggling.
She carefully stepped next to him and mimicked his posture.
“What are we doing?” She asked playfully.
“Hiding from my aunt,” Bill admitted, red in the face.
He was bothered by how old Theodora was while he acted like a child, hiding, and eavesdropping? He is such a loser.
“Is she so bad?” Theodora couldn’t stop shaking from giggles which she desperately tried to muffle with her hand over her mouth.
She tilted her head to sneak a peek into the living room.
“There she is! Come here, Theo. Let us introduce you to our favorite aunt.” George said nervously.
Before Bill could do anything about it and save Theodora from the interaction, she was already dragged by Fred to stand next to them.
“And who might you be?” Aunt Muriel narrowed her eyes and leaned closer to Theodora.
“This is our best friend, auntie.” George put a hand on Theodora’s back and pushed her forward almost making her slam her forehead against their aunt’s.
“Nice to meet you, my name is Theodora.” She extended her hand and waited for aunt Muriel’s response.
Muriel pursed her lips, her eyes still narrowed, scanning the girl. Theodora couldn’t remember the last time she felt so uncomfortable. It seemed the aunt was either judging her or contemplating if she should invite her to her secret club.
“Muriel.” She said slowly, her eyes moving up and down Theodora’s figure again. “A pleasure.”
“Theo, could you help me in the kitchen, dear?”
Theodora has never been so relieved to help Mrs. Weasley and she hoped that she won’t have to encounter aunt Muriel again during her stay here at the Burrow. She made a mental note to ask Fred and George in which room their aunt is staying in later so she can avoid the entire floor.
She excused herself, forcing a grin. Muriel’s eyes were still on her, her lips pursed again. Theodora stepped towards the kitchen as quickly as the gesture allowed her not to look as if she was running away.
“I like her.” Bill heard his aunt say.
He exhaled as much air as his lungs allowed him. He felt relieved that Theodora could slip away and that his aunt approved of her, not that it mattered in any way.
“So, which one of you is dating her?” Muriel asked Fred and George.
“Neither.” They replied in unison.
“Why? Can’t bother to put in the effort?” The aunt snorted.
“No,” Fred answered annoyed.
“She would be a fine lady to join the family.” Muriel persisted.
“Oh, don’t you worry auntie, Bill’s working on that.”
Bill frowned and clenched his jaw at George’s words. If he wasn’t so desperate to hide from his aunt he would go to the living room and strangle George for saying that.
“William?” Muriel gasped. “Isn’t the girl your age?”
“She is,” Fred answered, his voice indicating that he doesn’t see a problem.
“Are you out of your mind? She is too young for him. Shame on you for even thinking that and you better tell me you were joking and Bill isn’t trying to get the attention of the poor girl!”
Bill’s shoulders sunk at those words and he felt something break inside of him. He knew he was right. He knew Theodora was too young for him and that his siblings were wrong. He couldn’t believe it but aunt Muriel was making sense for a change.
He wanted to slam his head against the pillar – why did he have to listen to his siblings? Of course, they had no idea what they were talking about. He was having too much fun with Theodora, of course, it was too good to be true.
He sighed, feeling disappointed in himself. What was he thinking? What did he think would happen? He was a fool to think that there could ever be something between him and Theodora. He knew that now and he won’t let Charlie or the twins convince him to do anything as stupid again.
He and Theodora got so close in such a short amount of time and what did that bring him? Joy at first and happiness and the feeling of belonging and an opportunity to be himself. But that was just an illusion.
He was mad at himself for thinking that way. For allowing himself to get so low. Of course, he should’ve talked to an adult about it – ask mum perhaps – she would’ve set him straight in a minute.
He let out another sigh. He was right all along and it was time to stop pretending. There can never be anything between him and that wonderful girl. He can try and be friends with her like Charlie was, but he knew himself too well to know that he can't just stop feeling what he feels.
Another sigh – this time accompanied with a head shake. He just has to focus on the tournament and he can go home soon after that. It’s better that way.
He started toward the stairs, making a decision to wait in his room until all of his family members arrive. He wasn’t in a mood to talk to anyone or see anyone for that matter. He just wanted to be miserable.
Walking up the stairs, he silently thanked aunt Muriel for saying what she did. She was right and someone had to tell him the truth, no matter how much it hurt. He just wished she would say that a few weeks ago before he really started falling for Theodora and perhaps could avoid getting his heartbroken.
Now. Now it was too late for that. It’s been done.
—
“Come on, Bill! We have to get ready and we have to talk to Charlie!” Bill sat up on his bed when Fred started banging on his door.
“I’m coming!”
What was all the rush for?
He looked at his alarm clock and realized it was half an hour before the first game starts. He has been staring at the ceiling – his mind completely blank – for 4 hours. At least he didn’t have to interact with anyone.
He got dressed and made his way downstairs.
“Hi, Lee. What are you doing here?” Bill greeted the boy who was pacing up and down the corridor, pieces of parchment in his hands.
“Oh, hi, Bill! The twins invited me to be the tournament commentator.” He said nervously and returned to his notes.
“That’s great.” Bill grinned but didn’t get a reply.
He wasn’t at school anymore when Lee became the match commentator but the twins spoke about him often and always said he was really good so he couldn’t wait to hear him commentate on the game.
“There you are!” Before he knew what was going on, he was dragged outside by George.
George made him stop next to Theodora who was standing next to Fred, Ginny, and Ron – them all making a circle around Charlie.
“What is this? An intervention?” Charlie chuckled nervously. “Am I talking about dragons too much again?”
“Charles Weasley...” Fred said in a deep dramatic voice.
“We are gathered here today...” George followed his lead.
“To ask you something really really important.” Theodora sang as if in a musical.
Charlie was turning around to face each one of them, blinking confusingly, not having any idea what was going on.
“Will you be our Quidditch Captain?” Ginny asked in her sweet voice, making puppy eyes.
“Aww, that is so adorable!” For a second Bill thought Charlie was going to cry.
It was a nice thing his siblings did – asking him like this. Charlie might love his job in Romania but Bill knew he missed playing Quidditch and was proud to announce to anyone that asked him that he was captain while at school.
“Of course! I would love to!” Charlie jumped in the air and gathered them all into a bear hug.
“Now listen, you lot,” Charlie’s voice changed from high pitched excited one to serious the second they broke apart, “we are going up against the strongest teams in our family! We have to be focused, we have to stick together, and most importantly,” he smirked, “you have to listen to me.” He pointed his thumb at his chest.
“Five teams are competing – Aunt Muriel’s Army, The Prewetts, American Weasleys, the Twice Removed Cousins, and The Best Weasleys.” Charlie’s eyebrows were almost touching, that’s how focused he was.
“In case you’re wondering, we’re The Best Weasleys. Now,” he clapped his hands, “The Prewetts will play against the American Weasleys first. Then Aunt Muriel’s Army will play with the Twice Removed Cousins. Then the winning teams will play with each other and the winners get to compete against us.”
“If anyone is wondering why we seem to have no competition,” Charlie looked at Theodora who had the biggest grin on her face finding his speech as amusing as everyone else, “it’s because we won last year and winners just have to defend their title. We are the best Weasleys after all.” Charlie lifted his chin proudly.
“Anyone have any questions?” He asked and locked eyes with each one on his team.
Nobody dared to move a muscle. Bill never got a chance to see Charlie become the Quidditch Captain but he couldn’t deny that he was impressed. Charlie always messed around and seeing him so serious was a nice change of scenery.
Bill couldn’t stop sneaking a look at Theodora even if he wanted to. Her eyes were full of sparks looking at Charlie speak. She joined the team in Charlie’s last year and Bill knew that she not only admired him but missed him as a captain as well.
“Good! Everybody knows their position?”
They all nodded immediately.
“Great! Then go grab your gear, we have a tournament to win people!” Charlie started clapping his hands, gesturing to everybody that they should move.
Bill sat next to Ginny on the ground, waiting for the match between Aunt Muriel’s Army and Twice Removed Cousins to end. The Prewetts made complete fools out of American Weasleys, which wasn’t all that surprising since in the USA they barely play Quidditch and it showed on the pitch.
To distract himself from the fact that Theodora was sitting on his other side, Bill tried to focus on Lee who was commentating on the game. He was brilliant. Fred and George were right – he was good! He hoped that he will act upon his talent and that he’ll be able to hear him commentate on one of the future Quidditch World Cups.
“The Snitch has been caught! Aunt Muriel’s Army wins!”
Aunt Muriel stood up from her chair, where the family members that weren’t playing were sitting and cheering and started clapping loudly.
“Blimey, they are good this year.” Bill heard Fred whisper to Charlie behind him.
“Nah, they don’t stand a chance against The Prewetts.” Charlie calmed him down.
“That isn’t exactly encouraging for us if we have to go against them later,” George said.
“Come on, where’s your confidence?” Charlie nudged them with his shoulders. “You have me as captain and the Seeker and Theodora is an amazing Chaser and I have no doubt that you won’t destroy them with Bludgers and you said it yourself that Ron is getting better.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” George grinned mischievously.
“We are going to destroy them.” Fred agreed.
—
“That was a rough defeat for Aunt Muriel’s Army. 230 – 20 for The Prewetts and the game is over!”
Aunt Muriel wasn’t cheering so loudly anymore – she hid behind her hat instead.
Charlie was right. Despite Aunt Muriel’s Army doing their best, they didn’t stand a chance against The Prewetts. The twins hoped that Charlie was right about beating them too. They simply can’t lose, not at their home!
“Bill, you’re in-game spirit yet?” Charlie put his hand on his older brother’s shoulder, making him turn around.
“Of course, let’s go beat their arses!” Bill thrust his hand high in the air and felt Theodora giggle next to him at his words.
“See, you’re not as stuck up as you appear to be.” George winked at him.
“That’s the Bill we know and love!” Fred put his hands on Bill’s shoulder and shook him, making Bill playfully roll his eyes.
“Let’s go, team! It’s time to win this!” Charlie roared and ushered them all to the pitch.
They barely mounted their brooms when they could already hear Arthur Weasley cheering loudly in his chair. Molly Weasley stood up and started clapping with the biggest smile on her face.
This was the one event that brought the whole family together like this and it didn’t matter if they made fools out of themselves and they didn’t care how the rest of the family was looking at them. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were proud of their children and when better to show it than while playing Quidditch at the Burrow.
“Witches and Wizards, welcome to this year’s Weasley Tournament Finale!” Lee shouted into his microphone.
“We have The Prewetts, who won two games today and they did a great job, they sure deserve to be in the finale!” Lee admitted. “They are going against The Best Weasleys who have been holding the winner title of this tournament for 3 years now!”
“Will they be able to defend their position and stay on top or will the Prewetts become the new champions?”
A man with the curliest and reddest hair Lee has ever seen opened the chest in the middle of the field and let out the balls.
“The Snitch and the Bludger are out! Quaffle goes to The Best Weasleys and Ginny Weasley is already making her way with it toward the hoops!”
Lee watched Ginny sneak between two Beaters of the opposite team. She was still young but she showed exceptional talent. Because she was the youngest player, they didn’t take her seriously and she flew right past them straight in front of the other team’s Keeper.
“And Ginny scores the first goal! What a performance! The Prewetts sure didn’t see that coming!”
“Charlie Weasley – the former Gryffindor Quidditch captain and Seeker – is already after the Snitch! But what’s this now,” Lee gasped, “the Prewett’s Seeker is trying to knock Charlie off his broom. The Prewetts decided to take revenge for the first goal!”
“Fred and George Weasley are trying their best to stir the Bludger into the Seeker’s direction but they have to be careful not to hit their brother!”
Lee was shaking in his seat. The games at Hogwarts were intense sometimes and he always had so much fun commenting on them but this was something else. Family members competing against each other and seeing the Weasleys play together was like a dream come true. So many generations, so many amazing Quidditch players.
“Bill Weasley has the Quaffle now, but two Chasers from the opposite team are right on his tail!”
“Bill, watch out!” Bill turned to see George about to smack the Bludger in his direction.
He leaned forward to gain speed and got away just in time.
“What a performance from George Weasley! He knocked that Chaser right off his broom. This allows Bill to score, will he be able to do it?”
Lee stood up now, the excitement running through his body simply didn’t allow him to sit still any longer.
“Oh, no! George might have knocked one Chaser to the ground but the other two look like they won’t show any mercy to Bill!”
“Bill, over here!”
Bill barely dodged the Chaser that stopped right in front of him, wanting to trip him and looked to his left. Theodora was waving her hand and pointing to the hoops. Nobody was after her – all the attention on him. He gripped the Quaffle and lifted his hand.
“Bill passed the Quaffle to Theodora Cork, who is a remarkable Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team at Hogwarts, and she scores!”
Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were now both standing up and jumping in the air, cheering louder than before. The American Weasleys and the Twice Removed Cousins were also cheering for The Best Weasleys.
“The Bludger is now following The Prewett’s Seeker, giving Charlie Weasley a chance to go after the golden ball!”
Lee couldn’t help but wish that all Weasley siblings could play at school. He can’t remember when was the last time he had so much fun but was on the edge of his seat at the same time.
“Bill Weasley is the one who scored this time! 60 – 30 for The Best Weasleys!”
Charlie was proud of Bill for scoring. He knew the most how nervous he was to play since he played Quidditch the least and can’t remember when the last time he used a broom was. But he had no time to show it. They might be leading by 30 points but it was time to end this and win for the fourth year in a row.
“Ginny scored again! I dare to say that she will join the team at Hogwarts soon! She is too talented not to do so!”
Ginny’s cheeks turned pink at Lee’s words. She was proud of herself and she finally got the opportunity to show herself on the broom.
“Charlie caught the Snitch! Charlie caught the Snitch! The Best Weasleys aren’t called the best without a reason! They are the champions of this year’s tournament!” Lee tried shouting in his microphone while jumping up and down.
Molly and Arthur were jumping in the air, embraced, waiting for their children to get off their brooms so they could go and congratulate them.
“Take that, Prewetts!” Molly turned to the family who was sitting behind her and stuck out her tongue.
“Mollywobbles, you are a Prewett,” Arthur whispered in her ear, gently.
“Not when my children just won a spectacular match!” Mrs. Weasley cupped her husband's face, kissed him hard on the mouth, and ran toward the kids.
Mr. Weasley stood still for a second, astonished how into the game his wife got and then ran after her.
“We won! We won!” Ginny, Ron, and Theodora were jumping in the air.
“This was amazing!” Fred and George high-fived.
“Why do we only have this tournament once per year?” Charlie stepped to the group, the biggest proud grin on his face.
“I’m proud of you, brother.” He hugged Ron and got a smile in exchange.
“Gin-Gin! Since when are you a professional Quidditch player!” Charlie rushed to his baby sister, hugged her around the waist, and lifted her high in the air, making her giggle.
“Theo, you were brilliant!” Fred and George squeezed Theodora into a hug sandwich.
“Ginny was better! We have to get her on our team!” Her eyes were on Ginny who was now put down by Charlie because Molly started to give him warning looks for lifting her so high.
“Oh, sweetheart, I am so proud of all of you!” Molly hugged her eldest son so tightly that he couldn’t breathe for a second.
“You showed those Prewetts what’s business!” Arthur grinned at the lot.
“We are the best Quidditch family.” Mrs. Weasley squeaked in excitement.
“You weren’t as bad as you deemed yourself to be.”
Bill turned around to see Theodora smirk at him. He couldn’t help but return the smile. The last time they were stargazing together they talked about the tournament and Bill expressed his concerns when it came to his gameplay. He didn’t think he did much, he only scored once but for him, the achievement was already that he didn’t fall off his broom.
“You were better!” He stepped closer to her and pulled her in a hug.
Theodora stiffened, not expecting Bill to hug her. He never did that before. They never hugged before. It felt nice and she didn’t care at that moment what anybody around them would think so she relaxed, closed her eyes, and hugged him back.
“Oh, stop it.” She mumbled into his shoulder.
She didn’t want to let go of him because her cheeks were bright red and it would be a miracle if Bill wouldn’t notice.
“I’m serious. You’re really talented.” Bill gently pulled away, his hands on her shoulders.
He was praying that she couldn’t hear his racing heartbeat. He had no idea what got over him – pulling her in a hug. It just seemed fitting and it felt so right. How could it feel so right?
He was watching her fly on that pitch as if there was nobody else there. And to say that he had fun playing Quidditch was an understatement. It was pure adrenaline when he passed the ball to Theodora and he can’t recall ever having so much fun at the tournament before. Perhaps it was because Theodora was a part of their team.
He was in awe of how good she was. Charlie kept saying it and the twins told him in many letters but he didn’t know just how much talent the girl in front of him had until he saw it for himself today.
She was brilliant. In every aspect. In everything she did. He embraced her again. He couldn’t keep looking into her eyes and he didn’t know how to make her turn around or step away from her.
At that moment he didn’t care who was around them and who could see them. He wanted to celebrate the fact that they won and he wanted to do it with her.
He gently pushed her away when he heard whistling. He saw Fred and George standing in front of them, clapping and raising their eyebrows up and down. Theodora just giggled, trying hard not to look at Bill, who was flushed.
He took a step backward. Suddenly, everything that he heard aunt Muriel say in the morning came back to him and the disappointing feeling that he once again gave in to his feelings overwhelmed him.
He has to stop doing this. He has to stop thinking about her in this way. Wanting to spend time with her – to talk to her – to be with her. It was wrong and he can’t be so weak and keep crossing the line. It’s not fair to her and he’s definitely not making it easy for himself.
Remembering that the tournament is over and that he can soon go home made him feel better. He can go back to Egypt and forget this summer ever happened. It’s for the best. It’s not like he can do anything about it anyway.
—
“Do you have the beer?” Bill whispered.
“Yes.” Charlie lifted a six-pack with his right arm.
“Do you have the non-alcoholic beer?”
“Yes.” Charlie lifted the six-pack he was holding with his other arm.
“Okay, I’ll go find the twins and you go to Ginny’s room.” Bill pointed at the door ahead of them, where Ginny and Theodora were sleeping.
“You go wake up your girlfriend.” Charlie put the beer down in front of Fred and George’s room, ready to go inside.
“She’s not my...” Bill sighed and rolled his eyes. “...never mind.”
He knew that no matter what he says, he won’t win an argument against Charlie. He turned around instead and tip-toed to Ginny’s room. He carefully opened the door, ready to find them both sound asleep, but Theodora was reading a book, the room lit by her wand.
“Hi.” Bill smiled awkwardly at her.
“Hey.” Theodora waved.
She lowered her wand and closed her book without marking it. As if she could concentrate on reading. She was so into her thoughts that suddenly seeing Bill made her heart go crazy.
She was trying, she really was. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that Bill hugged her twice after the match. She kept thinking how good his arms around her felt and how proud he looked of her.
Her thoughts also kept getting disturbed by what she overheard aunt Muriel say to Fred and George this morning. Of course, she agreed with her. The age difference between them was too big but she didn’t have to be reminded of that. Not when she was having so much fun with him for the past few weeks.
She got to know Bill so much better and it seemed he was getting more relaxed around her and he trusted her more. It felt nice. She might be hiding and denying her feelings but at least she can be his friend.
That didn’t mean that what aunt Muriel said this morning didn’t hurt her. It did. Every time they were together and their hands brushed, or their shoulders touched, she was already reminded of the fact that Bill will never see her more than a friend, and each time she couldn’t help but wonder if things would be different if she was older. If only she was the older one in her family and not Eric.
“Is everything okay?” Theodora asked after swallowing hard.
She was doing it again – staring at him like an idiot.
“Yes...uhm...we...I mean Charlie and I...” Bill scratched his head.
Why was this so hard? He was getting good at talking to her but he couldn’t take the way she was looking at him – her eyes full of wonder and excitement for what he has to say.
He took a deep breath. He has to get it together, he can’t be so weak around a girl – around her.
“We want to celebrate today’s victory and I...I mean we were wondering if you would like to join us?”
Could he sound more hopeful that she’ll come? If Theodora wasn’t looking him straight in the eyes he would’ve rolled them, that’s how annoyed he was with himself.
“Sure. Let me just put something else on than my pajamas.” She chuckled and stood up.
“Of course, I’ll wait for you outside.” Bill chuckled too and closed the door behind him.
“That was smooth.”
Bill glared at Charlie who was giggling, walking past him going toward the stairs.
“Give me a break, Charles,” Bill whined.
He wanted to smack him over the head. It was already bad that he couldn’t talk normally to her but Charlie had to hear how awkward he was. He was counting the days to return to Egypt now.
“Okay, I’m ready.”
Theodora closed the door behind her, careful not to wake Ginny.
“Where are you taking me?” She turned to Bill with the biggest smile on her face.
She looked as excited as if they were going on a vacation.
“We are going to the roof.” Bill cleared his throat and gestured for Theodora to follow him.
“Theo!” The twins exclaimed when they saw that Bill brought her too.
“Did you two finish your make-out session?” Fred winked at her and George started laughing so much that he almost fell off the roof.
Theodora hit both of them in the shoulder, ignoring their teasing, and rolled her eyes.
“Beer for me and Bill.” Charlie handed one to Bill. “And nonalcoholic for you three.” He tore open the box and gave each a bottle.
“Why do we get a nonalcoholic beer? We’re 17!” Fred frowned.
“Yeah, we’re of age.” George followed.
“Because mum would have our heads if she found out we gave you alcohol,” Bill explained.
“So unfair.” George sighed and opened his bottle.
The second he tasted the bubbly beverage a smirk appeared on his face and he exchanged a look with his twin. Fred put a finger over his mouth to indicate that he should stay quiet.
Theodora couldn’t believe how much fun they were having. She has never been on a roof before, let alone have a little party on it. She was laughing so hard as Charlie tried imitating one of their relatives when they realized they lost.
He did a perfect impression. The Prewetts were really mad that they lost. She, of course, thought that they didn’t stand a chance. They were playing well, she had to give them that but the Weasley’s were so good at Quidditch and had so many talented kids on the broom that she kind of felt that they overpowered the other team but she didn’t care. They won and the whole family was so happy about it and she wouldn’t want it any other way.
—
Theodora was sitting next to Bill and Fred, looking down at her second – now empty –bottle. She looked at the sky and felt as if the stars were dancing in front of her. She closed one eye and then the other one. She then closed them both at the same time and squinted hard, thinking she was just sleepy.
She opened them up again and now she wasn’t just seeing dancing stars but was dizzy too. She looked down at her bottle again and tried reading the label but Fred almost rolling down the roof distracted her.
“Gogie, did you see...that.” Fred hiccuped and then laughed as if he has never laughed before.
He was clutching his stomach, laughing at Bill’s face who grabbed his shirt just in time for him not to fall off.
“Do it again. Feddie...again.” George put his head between his legs, trying hard not to laugh.
Bill narrowed his eyes, looking at his brother’s sudden change in behavior. He then looked at Charlie who was observing them with his eyebrows raised and alert, ready to catch them again in case they try something funny.
“Can I just see something?”
Bill turned to Theodora who was blinking, looking at the fingers on her hand.
“Mhm.” She mumbled and gave Bill her bottle.
“Charlie.” Bill hissed, making Charlie look at him. “This is not non-alcoholic beer.”
“What are you talking about?” Charlie stood up at once and took the bottle from Bill.
“Oh, bloody hell,” Charlie whispered to himself.
“You said you had non-alcoholic beer for them!” Bill glared at his brother.
“I...I was sure it was. Bill, I swear.” The panic on his face grew larger.
Bill sighed. Charlie obviously made a mistake. He knew he was grown-up enough not to get his younger siblings drunk on purpose and on the roof too.
“What are we going to do?” Charlie started biting his lip nervously. “Mum will kill us if she finds out.”
“She won’t.” Bill pursed his lips, trying to think of something quickly.
“We’ll wait on the roof until they sober up a bit and then we’ll take them to bed.” He said after a minute of thinking.
“Ha-ha, we knew.” George was laying down now, still laughing.
“Knew what?” Bill turned to him.
“We took a sip, we knew it was beer.” Fred elaborated.
“You knew?” Bill frowned.
How could they be so irresponsible? He knew that this probably wasn’t the first time they were drunk. He attended Hogwarts, he remembered the parties that happened in the common rooms. But this was different – he and Charlie got them drunk. They were supposed to be responsible for them.
“Of course, they knew.” Charlie rolled his eyes.
For the first time since the summer started, Charlie seemed annoyed by something the twins did. It was one thing to make mum mad and to create dangerous products in their room. Being drunk wasn’t funny, especially them being on a roof and Bill knew that Charlie was just as worried about them as he was.
“I go sleepsleep now, Gogie.” Fred laid down on one of the blankets they set up and covered himself with another one.
“Wait for me, wait for me!” Fred didn’t walk to his twin brother – he jumped to the spot.
For a second Bill was sure he was going to have a heart attack.
Charlie carefully watched his every jump, his whole head moving up and down with Fred’s action. He was so pale that Bill was sure he was going to throw up.
“How are you feeling?” Bill turned to Theodora, taking off his jacket and putting it around her.
“I’m fine. A bit dizzy.” She smiled gently.
She was adorable. Bill wanted to pull her toward himself, so she could lean on his shoulder but thought better of it. She is sitting next to him, he can keep an eye on her without the gesture.
“I didn’t know that the beer wasn’t non-alcoholic.” She looked up at Bill with the biggest apologetic eyes.
Bill wanted to melt, that’s how cute she was. He couldn’t be mad at her, even if she told him that she was the one who gave them the beer.
“I know.” He whispered to her and tried his hardest to keep a straight face but he never could with her – she always made him want to smile.
It didn’t take Fred and George 15 minutes to start snoring next to each other. Charlie covered George with a blanket and sat down next to Bill.
“Well, this didn’t go according to plan.” He sighed.
“I’ll say.” Bill took a sip of his beer.
“So, you two are getting close.” Charlie nodded toward Theodora who was now snoozing on Bill’s shoulder.
“Charlie, give me a break. I told you she’s too young for me.” Bill whined.
If Theodora wasn’t leaning against him, he would get up and leave. He can’t have this conversation again.
“You’re on this again,” Charlie rolled his eyes, “I thought you were over your age difference.”
“I heard aunt Muriel talk to the twins this morning and she said she’s too young for me. I knew I should’ve talked to someone else than you gits.” He frowned.
“Oh, come on! Who listens to aunt Muriel?”
“Charlie, seriously, give it a rest. This is killing me as it is.” Bill looked down at Theodora, wishing he didn’t – she was so beautiful when she was sleeping.
“If the age bothers you so much all you have to do is wait for another 6 months. She’ll be 18 in January.” Charlie tried cheering him up.
“Do you know how creepy that sounds?” Bill cringed.
“Not really, no.” Charlie rubbed his chin, saying it again in his head. “So what if she’s younger? In a few years that won’t matter at all. Once we get to our twenties the differences between someone who is 21 and someone who is 29 are almost invisible.”
“Since when are you so smart about these things?” Bill raised an eyebrow at Charlie.
“I have a lot of friends who, for some reason, come to me for relationship advice.” Charlie chuckled.
“So, Mr. Advice-Giver, did you ever have a case like this?” Bill teased.
“No. But I have a friend in Romania who is 42 and he liked this girl who is 23 and everybody told them that she’s too young for him but he went for it anyway and they’re really happy together.” Charlie said matter-of-factly.
“That’s not the same, Charlie.” Bill pouted.
“How is it not the same?” Charlie asked puzzled.
“It doesn’t matter. She doesn’t feel the same way anyway.” Bill sighed and looked up at the stars.
“Seriously?” Charlie pressed his lips together.
“What?”
“I am prepared to bet that she not only likes you but has feelings for you.” Charlie nodded at Theodora, whose arm was now wrapped around Bill’s, her eyes still closed.
“She just fell asleep on my shoulder,” Bill said, annoyed with his brother.
“Right, and she constantly sneaks looks at you and she giggles at everything you say and she spends most of her free time with you or near you,” Charlie smirked.
“None of that is important. We can’t happen, Charlie. All the teasing and winking you and the twins do can only be in good fun. We can’t be together.”
Bill turned back to Theodora, looking at her longingly. The words hurt more than he would like to admit, especially because this was the first time he said them out loud, and now more than ever was he convinced that he was making the right decision.
“Alright,” Charlie gave up, “your heartbreak not mine.”
Exactly. It was his choice. He knows she is too young. And Charlie is delusional to think that she fancies him back. And there is simply too much distance between them once he goes back to Egypt. He has more reasons why they can’t be together, but right now, those convinced him enough to look away from her.

I was bored so here’s some hc’s
I have a lot surprisingly so a lot of these are coming off the top of my head
-Laxus does not have good eyesight in the eye with a scar because that's where the lacrima was implanted. But he can still see out of it, it just gets blurry sometimes.
-If you had a lacrima implanted in you, there's gonna be a scar where it was implanted, and depending on what type of magic it is determine's the shape.
-Laxus's mother was born without magic and had the same thing happen to her but she was 16 when she had it implanted in her hand, she also had asked to have one and Laxus didn't.
-Laxus was born without magic thanks to his mother being born without magic too.
-When you get a lacrima implanted in you, depending on what type and how strong it is, depends on how sick you get. It's a counterbalance so people won't always get lacrima's implanted in them. The day it was implanted you get very sick as the body's reaction to an overwhelming influx of magic in your system, it happens every year in the same day it was implanted but the first time is the worst.
-"This is what I get for being emotionally slutty," Loke probably looking back on some kind of event.
-Loke with freckles!
-Loke sleeps when he's bored.
-Lucy suffers the worst writer's block ever and can't seem to ever get out of it no matter how hard she tries(I feel you girl).
-Plue really likes candy.
-Happy got Lucy a little frame that said "Life is better with cats" for her Birthday and despite how much Happy annoys her sometimes she keeps it on the desk she writes on and treasures it dearly.
-Do not let Erza play whack a mole or the games where you have to throw balls at clowns or vases you have to knock down to win a prize.
-Or let the dragon slayers play any driving game in general.
-Horror movies do not scare Aries, a lot of things do, but not horror movies.
-Mira really likes candles, but always gets them when they're on sale.
- Gray once got banned from a strip club after being mistaken for one of the strippers.
-Juvia could literally kill someone if she wanted to since our bodies are made of 60% of water but has no idea. She desires to learn more about blood magic if she so desires but hasn't.
-Levy wants to study rune magic but procrastination is her worst enemy, also people trying to attack the guild interrupting her every time she tries to cracks open a book to try and learn it. She's stopped trying to learn it in fear that if she tries someone will start attacking the guild again.
-Gajeel & Juvia and Gray & Loke are very underrated friendships that need more attention.
-Natsu chugged hot sauce and didn't even flinch. (A friend of mine did that and they scare me.)
-Lucy carries around a box of matches just in case Natsu wants a snack whenever they go on missions.( which is a lot of the time, a lot of her money has went into buying matches, she's had to go to plenty different stores to buy some because she's scared the clerk will think she's up to something and explaining it will only make her seem more suspicious.)
-Technically demon slayers are just exorcists but with more violence.
-In a human au Gray was an exorcist once.
But in normal Fairy Tail he takes side jobs on getting rid of demons from ordinary houses or other places which pays a lot.
-The wool Aries can make, can make really nice jackets. She's made jackets using it, but Loke stole it cause he likes comfy things in general.
-Loke actually needs his glasses, his glasses double as both sunglasses and normal glasses(someone I know someone who has the same type of glasses, I also wear glasses so.) due to being in Earthland too long, certain things started deteriorating like important sense's thankfully it wasn't on a major scale but on a longer one but it can't be fixed.
-Due to his eyesight deteriorating he has better hearing.
-Loke and Evergreen are nearsighted, Levy is farsighted.
-Ivan named Laxus because Laxus looked so much like his mother it only seemed fair.
-Laxus has an aunt who's his mom's sister. He talks to her through letters because she lives across the sea.
-"My little dragon," was a nickname that Laxus's mom gave him after he had gotten the dragon lacrima implanted in him against her wishes since if they were to do it, she wanted to do it when he was 16 like her but Ivan thought 8 was a much more appropriate age. (It was not). The only one who knows of this nickname for him is Makarov, his mom, his aunt, and his dad.
-His dad once used the name in a fight against him and he wanted to punch him so bad.
-If Mira were to swear she'd put sailors to shame.
-Erza has horrible road rage.
-I refuse to believe that Loke has two sets of ears, he does not have human ears and lion(cat ears?) ears at the same time just lion ears while in his celestial form and humans ones in his human form. He wears the piercing he used to wear on his human ears on his cat ears when in said celestial form, or outfit or whatever.
-The car ears(I'm calling them that now) are actual ears, you'd be surprised how many people try to pull on them in thinking that they aren't only to be pleasantly surprised that they in fact are. He likes to be pet behind them whenever they are there and he doesn't have regular human ears.
-He also despises chokers/collars with the very soul of his being. He might hiss at you if you bring one even close to him that's how much he hates them.
He doesn't even have a reason to he just hates them.
-Erza sometimes refers to her guildmates as "Feral children".
-Dragonslayers cannot whistle if their life depended on it.
-Loke knows French because most of his masters were in the French Court meaning it was mandatory for him to learn it. (I refuse to believe anyone with common sense would date him with that haircut he had in the human world, looked like something a 5-year-old would draw on a stick figure in an attempt to draw hair).
-Levy knows French, Arabic, and a few other languages.
-She fucks with people by talking to Loke in French and making them think that they're talking about that person why they aren't.
-Mira tried to learn French, she failed very badly since she kept forgetting the parts before the word and kept messing it up.
-The dragon slayers can purr when happy, growl when mad, and whimper when sad.
-The same thing applies to Loke but mostly because he's an overgrown cat.
-In order to date someone at the guild if you aren't in it you have to get Erza's blessing/asking her if it's alright since she's kinda the older sister and also the first one you wanna tell.
-Loke does not blow-dry his hair after he washes it because it just poof's up and there's no way to fix it other than to wash his hair again and look like a drowned cat for an hour or two. Though his hair is very soft after he washes it and it properly drys and isn't wet.
-Celestial spirits can dream, but their dreams consist of looking back on old memories from an outside viewpoint.
-Freed says "Let's have another round tonight" very unenthusiastically when drunk, just that sentence, no other sentence, just that one, only when he's drunk.
-Loke's good with finances along with fashion because one of his previous master, Valeria, pushed her financial work on him as a 'learning experience'.
-Loke was also offered a modeling job before and Lucy is super pissed since he of all people can get one but not her. (In the human au, he actual does modeling)
-If Mira and Loke were to team up it'd most like to be to help people in the guild get together.
-They would succeed.
-They both also like wine.
-Loke and Erza are bi, Mira is pan.
-Upon learning about this, Juvia considered Loke a love rival, be assured her that he was none and that he'd give her some advice to trying to date Gray because Gray and romance don't go well if she kept quiet about it.
-Gray ended up figuring it out and still holds it against him.
-Loke does not like being compared to a cat, he despises it so Gray as the best friend he is does exactly that.
-The two of them have blackmail on each other, and Gray often drags Loke into watching horror movies knowing he absolutely despises him with the very core of his being.
-Gajeel will fight anyone who hurts his best friend, Juvia.
Or anyone who hurts his guild but Juvia is different since she's been with him since they joined Fairy Tail.
Natsu once grabbed a pan straight out of the oven and horrified everyone in the room.

Boys and Aliens ch 2
I'm still new to posting on here. Second chapter is done. I might post it on Wattpad too.
Chapter 2
626 woke to the feeling of being nudged by a foot. He peaked out from under the covers to see Laddie sitting up and rubbing his eyes. 626 crawled out and perched next to the boy. Laddie felt something sit next to him, “626. You’re here.” Laddie shocked 626 when he lunged forward and hugged him. 626 squirmed out of Laddie’s hold and shook out his fur like a dog. The alien was not accustomed to physical touch. Laddie got out of bed and went over to his stash of coloring books, and worked on the page he started the night before. 626 ventured around the main room some more. The sun was starting to set, so the rest will be up soon.
Laddie broke 626 from his venturing, “Is 626 your name?” 626 sits on the floor with Laddie and nods his head. “Do you like it?” Laddie asked. 626 just stares at the boy. Laddie tilts his head and thinks, “I could give a better name.” Laddie sits up and pushes away the picture of Frankenstein he was coloring. The picture gave him an idea, “How about Frank?” 626 shook his head no. “Ok, Stein? No, not that one.” Laddie looks at the last part he colored in, it was the stitches across Frankenstein’s forehead. “What about Stitch?” The alien tilted his head from side to side slowly, then nodded, “Ih.”
Hearing voices of laughter and hollering, Laddie knew the boys were up and heading to the main room. Marko and Paul appeared first, shoving and punching each other while laughing. Then Dwayne followed shortly by David. Laddie got up and went to Dwayne, “Guess what?” “What buddy?” Dwayne picked the boy up. “I gave 626 a new name,” Laddie excitedly exclaimed. “Really?” Paul curiously wondered. Laddie nodded his head, “Uh-huh. His name is Stitch, and he likes it.”
They all turn to Stitch, who is a little uncomfortable with the attention. They watch as Stitch stuffed his feet in his mouth and rolled around the cave like a ball. Stitch bounced a few times over the uneven ground before unrolling to keep from smacking into the giant red toolbox. He could see a bunch of spare parts from their motorcycles and a bare frame. Dwayne and Marko join him since they are the ones that mostly work on the bikes. Marko gestures to the parts, “These are parts from our bikes. We don’t need them. You’re welcome to do what you want with them.” They were mostly curious to see what Stitch could come up with. David got the boys’ attention away from Stitch, “Come on boys, time to feed… Star, you and Laddie stay here.” And with that, the four vampires left to feed off some Surf Nazis.
Star waited for the sounds of the bikes to fade before heading towards the opening of the cave. Laddie stopped her, “Where are you going? You’re supposed to stay here with me.” Star just scoffed, “I’m meeting someone. You’ll be fine. You have Stitch.” Laddie shook his head, “David is going to be so mad.” Star just shrugged her shoulders and continued to climb out of the cave. She was going to meet Michael. She was sure he could help her get away from David and The Lost Boys.
A sound of a tool dropping back into the toolbox had Laddie turning towards Stitch. He gasped at what Stitch had built, “Whoa! You built a bike. Wait, it has three wheels.” Stitch stepped away to look at his creation. He had taken the bare frame, added an additional bar on the back end to support two small wheels from what looks like a go-kart. A decent-sized engine inside the frame with a seat big enough for a grown adult. The handles dropped low enough for Stitch to reach. Stitch had greased and gassed up this beast of a trike. He mounted it and kicked it to life. Satisfied with how it ran, Stitch shocked Laddie by lifting it with one arm and proceeded to carry it outside of the cave and up the cliffside, bypassing the stairs. Laddie followed him out. Stitch had Laddie sit on the seat, then he sat on Laddie’s lap. Stitch started the bike up and off they went.
(Forgive me. I’m not a mechanic so I’m describing what Stitch built as best I can. Looks kinda like this. Google helped.)
The boys were leaning against their bikes just people watching when they heard what sounded like another bike coming closer. Their eyes widen as tourists and locals jump out of the way of what looks like a trike. Once it gets closer they can see it is Stitch and Laddie. Stitch drifts the trike to a halt next to the other bikes. Laddie’s hair is in his face, “Hi guys.” Stitch got up so Laddie could stand, giggling the whole time. The ride was so much fun. Stitch had modified the engine to go faster than it is supposed to and ride over sand with no problem.
Marko and Dwayne are circling the trike, impressed with what he was able to put together from all the parts inside the cave. Marko sat in the seat and it felt comfortable, “This is a sick-ass ride, little dude.” Dwayne nodded his head, “Yeah it is.” Dwayne then looked around for Star, “Where’s Star?” Stitch growled. Laddie patted his head to calm him down, “She left right after you guys. I think that’s why Stitch brought me here. I told her she was supposed to stay with me but she left anyways.” All four vampires growled in anger. David lit another cigarette, “As much as I hate to, we need to go let Max know. See if we can finally get rid of her.”
The group of six walked over to the video store. Opening the door making the dinger go off, Max looks up to see his boys and Laddie walk in. He didn’t notice Stitch at first, not until his Hellhound Thorn growled. “I told you not to come in here. What is that thing?” Thorn kept growling and getting closer to Stitch. The alien growled in response, stood up straighter to look the Hellhound in the eyes. Stitch’s eyes started to glow bright green, making Thorn cower and back away. The boys just smirked and walked out of the video store. They didn’t even bother talking to Max about Star. They were too smug that Stitch scared Thorn.
Stitch did not like Max one bit. Max was very rude to his new friends. David walked past Stitch and bent down to pat his head as he passed. The group went back to their bikes and hung out for a bit longer. Stitch would occasionally say words in his language. Dwayne being the closest to him asked what he was saying. Over the next hour, Stitch tried his best to teach the boys various phrases in his language. They were all laughing at the insults he taught them. The people passing by would just glance at them and walk faster thinking they were being talked about.
David had spotted Star talking to Michael. He was the kid Max had ordered to turn so Max could claim the kid’s mom. He dropped his spent cigarette on the ground and stomped it out. “Come on boys, let’s greet the lovebirds,” David said as he mounted his bike. They all surrounded Michael, even Stitch, and Laddie. Star looked at David scared before turning back to Michael. “You left Laddie alone again Star,” David told her coldly promising punishment once they got back to the cave.
Michael had hung out with the Lost Boys a couple of times already. Ever since the first time, Michael has felt different, more agitated, aggressive, and hungry no matter what he ate or drank. He glared at David, “We were going to get something to eat.” He held his hand out for Star but David cut her off, “Star.” As of giving a silent command, she mounted David’s bike behind him. “Why don’t you come with us? We were just going to get something to eat.” The boys laughed knowing it wasn’t food he was talking about. David could feel Michael’s hunger was getting worse. Time to show this half-vamp what he was. They drove to the cave and dropped off Star, Laddie, and Stitch first. Stitch has not been told they are vampires yet, so they did not want him to see them feed and freak out.
Following behind the guys, Michael was a little on edge. He was turning into something and he didn’t like it. His younger brother Sam told him he was turning into a vampire. Michael didn’t want to believe him but certain things that have happened to make him think Sam is right. Pulling up to a sand dune, the four vampires and half got off their bikes and climbed up a tree to watch a group of drunk Surf Nazis party. The Nazis were oblivious to what awaits them. Michael heard David talking, “Initiation is over Michael. Time to join the club.” Michael looks over the other guys to see their faces have transformed into something demonic.
David and his boys flew at the partiers and tore into them, pun intended. Michael watched as Marko snapped a guy's neck after drinking his blood. Paul ripped some guy’s arms off while his mouth was attached to his neck. Dwayne snapped a guy in half that he drained. It was what David was doing that scared him the most. David had bit the top of a guy’s head and then started to eat the back out of it while slurping up the blood. Michael could feel the urge to join them, and it freaked him out. Michael dropped out of the tree and rolled down the hill as the guys came over the top. They were panting and covered in blood.
“Now you know what we are. What you are. You will never grow old, get sick or die. But you must feed,” David wiped the blood off his cheek and laughed. Michael screamed, “NO!” He mounted his bike and rode off as fast as he could. The boys just continued to laugh at the punk. They knew Michael wasn’t made for the life of a vampire. They returned to the cave shortly thereafter where Stitch gave them all a once-over before laying down at Laddie’s feet.
David and his boys just gave each other a look and thought, ‘Maybe Stitch wouldn’t freak out.’ They decided to tell him the next night what they were. Of course, Stitch will find out before then.

Here is another prewritten one shot that is also blairon! I’m willing write something other than blairon. I for the life of me cannot write straight ships as a main ship so that pretty meh. Am I the only one who's fine with spending hours alone in my own room when its pitch black just looking at words for the sake of it? I mean, it is pretty fun. This one had 2k words so yeah, it may not be the biggest one-shot you've ever read so excuse that minor detail. I might post some head cannons I have for my HP ships as well.

Ron was in awe of him.
He was almost as popular as Malfoy, with even Malfoy as his friend.
He was the only Slytherin in Professor Slughorn's "Slug Club" mainly because he was one of the top students in potions, aside from his mother's connections.
He was a sensible, grounded person, who actually knew the right time to speak along with being level headed.
And to add on top of that he was quite an attractive person, which was why Ron had no idea on how he wasn't with anyone yet romantically.
Of course the boy that put Ron in that love-struck state was none other than Blaise Zabini.
But Ron couldn't ever imagine a universe where Blaise would love him back.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
"As it is a new semester, and also a fresh start to the new year, Headmistress Mcgonagall has suggested that all professors, including myself, should be rearranging the seating plan. This isn't very new, but as Hogwart's new goal to creating more inter-house relationships, whether platonic or not, we would like to encourage that type of thing more. So please, accordingly line yourselves up at the front as I reassign you to your new seating partner.", Professor Slughorn explained to his sixth year class which contained both Slytherin and Gryffindor students.
Murmurs could be heard as the students all slowly slunk towards the front of the class, with Gryffindor on one side and Slytherins on the other, whispering their complaints and worries about how all of this could end.
"Professor, if I may, but if we are pairing with someone from another house and we are brewing a potion, how will you know who actually did the potion and who to give the points to?",Hermione blurted out stepping out of line. She secretly sent a glare towards the Slytherins which was quickly returned back by Pansy Parkinson.
"Wonderful question Miss Granger! The points will be evenly given to both participants. And I can assure that all of you will be working instead of slacking off.",the old professor replied jovially as Hermione stepped back in line.
After a few more questions asking about how this inter-house seating arrangement would even work, from both the Slytherin and Gryffindor houses, Professor Slughorn eventually started listing out the seating partners.
"Ms. Granger and Ms. Parkinson, Mr. Longbottom and Mr. Nott, Mr. Malfoy and Mr. Potter...", Slughorn continued on as Ron lost almost all interest. He'd rather wait to see the day where Seamus didn't blow up his potion instead of having to wait for his name to be called.
"...And lastly, Mr. Weasley with Mr. Zabini.", Professor Slughorn finished, with his regular, cheery tone.
Thankfully, Ron managed to keep his face from heating up as he slowly trudged behind the Slytherin boy towards the very last desk, on the left-hand side.
Since the rearranging of the seating plan had taken so long, Professor Slughorn decided to use the last fifteen minutes of class for the partners to socialize and get to know one another.
"So...",Ron started nervously scratching the back of his head looking at the slightly shorter boy who lazily leaned against the wall, his arms crossed.
"If you're trying to start a conversation Weasley, anyone could tell how much of an amateur you are at starting one.",Blaise drawled as Ron looked at him in utter bewilderment.
"I-uh..",Ron stuttered his face slightly became coated with a crimson red blush before composing himself.
"You are quite the Gryffindor Weasley.",Blaise remarked, quietly chuckling, with Ron starting to laugh soon after.
"Either way, it's nice to actually meet a Slytherin who isn't as stuck up as the rest.",Ron smiled warmly.
"You actually think that every Slytherin is stuck up? We're just more in control of our emotions. Besides, you may be a pureblood, but that doesn't mean you were raised like the other purebloods.",Blaise answered nonchalantly, as he sat down on the high-legged stool behind him.
"Well, all of my older brothers had dealt with Slytherins and all of their antics, so I guess what they told me just rubbed off onto me.",Ron told Blaise grabbing another high-legged stool behind him to sit on.
"I would hate it if I had a sibling, more so an older one. I don't get how you even withstood having three older brothers.",Blaise laughed again, while also easing the tension from their conversation topic prior to this one.
"Five actually. I had two more brothers who graduated before I got to Hogwarts.",Ron chuckled as Blaise's eyes widened in surprise.
"Your mum had to take care of six boys and a daughter on top of that? How did that woman even handle it?",Blaise smirked with a hearty laugh from Ron as a response.
"I don't even know. But she sure was strict.",Chuckled Ron.
"What a bummer. My mum was to busy with her husbands to even properly discipline me.", Blaise admitted with a sarcastic sigh.
"Ok class! Thank you to the most of you who did talk with one another, but you may head upstairs to the great hall for lunch now. I heard the elves have cooked something great today!",Slughorn announced to the class as he left before his students, eager to eat.
As Blaise had picked up his potions book and was about to join his friends for lunch, Ron did something he never thought he would do.
Ron quickly tugged Blaise's sleeve as Blaise was about to leave making the sixth year Slytherin boy turn around confused.
"Sorry Zabini, but do you want to go to Hogsmeade with me this weekend?",Ron said quickly as his fingers involuntarily twiddled around with one another on his lap.
"Like a date?",Blaise inquired, slightly smirking.
"O-oh, n-no! Just as friends! I mean if you want to be friends.",Ron stuttered his face quickly turning as red as his hair.
Blaise's smile faded slightly as he frowned, albeit, Ron had't noticed this, and was too busy looking at his lap with a greatly warmed face.
"Why not. Would you like to meet at Honeydukes on Saturday at around twelve o'clock? I haven't had chocolate frogs since last semester.",Blaise replied as he smiled again.
"Great!",Replied Ron, who managed to compose himself, once again.
Blaise turned around to see Pansy Parkinson impatiently waiting by the doorway. Blaise turned back around and gave Ron a lopsided smile and a small wave before grabbing his potions book and quickly walking over to Pansy.
"Bloody hell, I think I just befriended him.",Ron thought to himself, dumbfounded, whilst shaking his head after the two Slytherins were out of sight.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
Skip to the Saturday morning of Ron's meet up with Blaise, and Ron was a complete wreck.
Emotionally, of course.
Ron paced around his dorm room in circles worried about what could possibly happen.
What if Blaise thought he wasn't good enough?
What if Blaise thought he was to poor to even befriend more so get together with?
What if Blaise found out he liked him?
What if Blaise never even showed up and it was just a prank?
Ron was going in circles both emotionally and physically until he was shook out of his trance.
It was just Neville.
"Are you okay? Hermione just told me that you should be going now if you want to make it on time to Hogsmeade.",Neville told the distressed redhead.
Ron frantically casted a tempus charm to see that it was almost twelve, the time that he and Blaise agreed to meet up at.
"Shit!",Ron hissed as he ran out of the dorm grabbing a warm jacket along with his newest sweater from his mum. Whilst he was leaving, he also left a confused Neville left to ponder on who the boy was meeting at Hogsmeade.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
Ron saw Blaise waiting for him in the front of Honeydukes with a light gray sweater and an emerald green woollen scarf.
When Blaise noticed the redhead hurriedly running towards him, he waved and smiled as Ron was panting quite heavily trying to catch his breath.
"Are you okay?",Blaise asked genuinely worried that something had happened to Ron.
"I'm fine, I just didn't realise how late I was until the last minute so I ran here so you wouldn't need to wait. But how long were you standing there waiting for me?",Ron countered.
"Just about ten minutes.",Blaise chuckled at the red-faced redhead.
"That long? Bloody hell, I'm so sorry, are you cold?",Ron asked not wanting Blaise to be sick thanks to him.
"Not that much, although it is surprisingly cold for a January afternoon.",Blaise replied.
"Yeah, Hermione told me that the muggles were doing that. She says it's because they don't know how to clean up after their messes. It's somehow destroying the world.",Ron laughed.
"We should probably go inside, fourth years have started crowding the entire place at thirteen o'clock. It's quite the madhouse.",Blaise said, grabbing Ron's hand and pulling him into the freshly painted pink and turquoise building.
Ron was beyond grateful the boy pulling him hadn't looked back at Ron, or else he would have seen Ron's overly flushed face.
Once inside the candy store, Blaise hadn't let go of Ron's hand, seemingly forgetting that they were holding hands in the first place.
But of course Ron wasn't going to argue.
Walking down the small twists and turns of the candy store was quite tiring but after ten minutes the boys found the chocolate aisle.
"How many should we get.",Blaise asked Ron.
Ron fished his pocket to find his coin bag and remembered that he had around two galleons worth of sickles in there with probably a bit extra. The chocolate frogs were one chocolate frog for two galleons. So at least he could afford one chocolate frog and wouldn't embarrass himself in front of his crush.
After the two bought their chocolate frogs they stopped at the front door.
"How many did you get? Most I could get was one chocolate frog.",Replied Ron with uncomfortableness lining his voice.
"I just settled for two, but I insist you take one of mine.",Blaise told Ron, taking one of his chocolate frog boxes and shoving it into Ron's hand.
"I'm sorry, I can't, you paid for this.",Ron said holding out the given Chocolate Frog box for Blaise to take back.
"Nonsense, I could just buy another some other time. Take it as a thank you gift for inviting me to Hogsmeade.",Smiled Blaise before opening the door for them to exit to store.
"What do you want to do now?",Ron asked as they only made plans to go to Honeydukes.
"We could just walk around. I mean, do you want to walk?",Blaise replied.
"Sure.",Ron grinned.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
After about 10 minutes of walking around the Hogsmeade grounds it started to snow, much to Blaise's distaste.
"I said it before and I'll say it again. This is to cold for a January afternoon.",Blaise shivered.
Ron chuckled before slipping off his jacket and putting it on Blaise. Blaise's face warmed up in embarrassment but it was quite hard for Ron to tell as the oblivious redhead had thought it was just because he gave him something to keep him warm.
"Are you okay now?",Ron asked gently.
Blaise just smiled at Ron and hugged him as Ron's face stretched wide as a smile formed on his face also.
"You know, anyone would be lucky to have you, you're too nice.",Blaise said.
"Well I would be lucky to have them.",Ron answered.
"Well come on then Weasley, I'm sure we can find you a special someone another time."Blaise smirked at him him.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
The two stopped to sit on a ledge after half an hour of walking around. It was almost thirteen o'clock and Blaise was both quite knackered.
"I never realised how tiring walking could be.",Blaise yawned.
"Well now you have. Should we go back then if you're so tired?",Ron queried with some amusement in his voice.
"No, Pansy is currently in a mood and I have no intentions on being in the same room with her when she's in that kind of state.",Blaise replied wearily as Ron laughed.
"Well you could just sleep here. My shoulder is free."Ron reasoned without a thought, as Blaise yawned before promptly falling asleep on Ron's shoulder.
When Ron realized what he did he was a mixture of embarrassment and surprise on his own behalf.
So in all, he was quite shocked.
Another thirty minutes passed before Ron nudged Blaise awake. It was only thirteen-thirty, but they were supposed to be back before fourteen o'clock and it would take a bit of time to return to the castle without a carriage.
And Ron was not in the mood to wait in the carriage line for fifteen minutes, just for the carriage ride to be another fifteen minutes. And the professors were quite strict, even if a student was only a minute late. Once, a student had received two weeks of detention with Professor Snape for returning back to the castle five minutes after the curfew.
The two walked back quietly for a change and Ron kept glancing down to both his, and then Blaise's hands. Merlin knows how much he wanted to hold them.
Halfway to the castle, Ron and Blaise's hand briefly brushed up against one another and Ron had to fight down the crimson blush from eroding his pale, freckled cheeks. Blaise for one, seemed to not have noticed the entire situation.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
When the two boys could see the gates leading into Hogwarts and the crowd of students lining up to be accounted as returned on the Hogsmeade list, Blaise grabbed Ron's hand and quickly dragged the puzzled redhead behind a tall array of bushes where nobody would be able to see them.
"Sorry Weasley for dragging you, it's just that- I just wanted to thank you for the afternoon. It was really enjoyable.",Blaise told Ron, though not meeting Ron's eyes.
Ron unthinkingly went closer to the Slytherin. At this point he wasn't even focussing on he possibilities of what could happen.
Ron slowly closed his eyes, leaned downwards slightly, his hands snaking around the Slytherin's slim waist and he kissed him.
Right on the lips.
The kiss was short, with Ron's lips brushing not very forcibly pressed against Blaise's own. But Ron's face looked exactly like his fiery red hair.
Ron's eyes widened as he realised what he did.
He just kissed Blaise Zabini.
But before he could process much more, he was pulled down into another kiss, except a better one this time.
After a few seconds, Ron's mind finally had a grasp of what was happening. His eyes closed again as he pulled the Slytherin closer to him as his hand were still coiled around Blaise's waist. He never wanted to let go of him.
Blaise pulled away first as Ron's eyes were still closed, a bit discombobulated from the separation.
Ron realized Blaise's hands were wrapped around Ron's neck as Blaise hugged him.
"I can't believe we just kissed.",Ron grinned widely hugging Blaise back.
"I'm more surprised on how you aren't even that bad of a kisser.",Blaise smirked as Ron just hugged Blaise tighter playfully.
"Should we go back to the castle? I'd reckon the others might be waiting for us.",Ron assumed.
"I'd reckon so too Weasley.",Blaise replied as Ron let go so they could walk back to the castle.
This time they walked back to the castle holding hands.
And Ron was absolutely love struck.

Standards of Performance, Chapter 6: Buckshot and Tequila
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5
AO3 Link
Finally, I write most of the chapter before the day I’m supposed to post it. This was mostly done on my laptop (which I’m not used to) as we just moved and my PC is barely set up, so forgive anything that looks weird or wonky. As always, I hope you enjoy. I love getting all your kind messages <3 (Also message me if you want to be on the taglist - I suppose I should be better about that!)
Summary: You’re the BAU’s newest intern, desperate to prove yourself amongst an established team of much more experienced profilers. Agent Hotchner, the seemingly infallible team leader, sets strict expectations for your performance. He commands your respect without even trying, but is there something more to your relationship than a simple desire to impress your stony-faced boss?
Chapter: 6, Buckshot and Tequila
Chapter Summary: Events during a new case test your ability to keep your feelings hidden, and a night out takes an unforeseen turn.
Words: 3736
Rating: Explicit, 18+. Warnings on AO3.
Pairings: Hotch x Reader, Hotch x You
Turns out, lying to Hotch was easier than you thought.
It helped that you were lying to yourself too, of course - that you pretended your gaze didn't linger on his form whenever he was in your vicinity, that the swell of pride in your chest when he agreed with something you said was purely professional. There were times, though, that the facade was much harder to maintain. The most recent case had been one of those times.
You had been tracking down an unsub abducting children in a rural Iowa town. Three kids had gone missing in the span of two weeks, and after Garcia matched the victimology and MO with neighboring states, it looked to be close to a dozen in the years before that. The case started off rough enough - locals refused to believe it could be one of their own, police resisted the BAU’s guidance, the usual - but it came to a head when a fourth child went missing during the investigation.
Thankfully, the team figured out the identity of the unsub relatively quickly. Reid did a geographical profile of all the locations where victims were taken and found a public health clinic that had branches in each area. Garcia cross-checked the employee records to find that only one doctor had done travel shifts at each clinic during the time the children were taken, and within minutes, you were rushing to his address.
The SUV carrying Hotch, Rossi, and Prentiss arrived long enough before yours that by the time you pulled up, they were already kicking down the door and entering the home. The first thing you heard after you flung the car door open was the deafening crack of a weapon firing, and despite your lack of training with firearms, it was apparent that it was not an FBI-issue pistol.
You would never describe yourself as fragile - you couldn't be, not in this line of work. But when you registered the implications of that sound, your knees buckled, instantly bringing you down onto the dusty ground outside the farmhouse. The rest of the team sprinted in, guns drawn. You faintly registered Prentiss yelling inside, then more gunshots, but your head was ringing so loudly from the visceral panic that you couldn’t make out anything specific.
When Hotch burst back out onto the porch, you thought you might honestly sob with relief. That is, until you caught the glint of the sun in the slick, dark blood dripping down the sleeve of his suit.
That was when you puked.
Something about the sight of Aaron Hotchner bleeding felt so wrong that even as you struggled to your feet and stepped over the pile of sick you left in the dirt, even as you got closer and saw the rivulets of blood drip down to his fingertips and dot the wooden floors of the porch, you felt like you were in a dream. Your mind couldn’t grasp the sudden shock of his mortality, that he could bleed, that he could die, even, and he very well might, depending on what vessels were hit. You made it up the steps, only managing to call out his name - his first name - your throat still burning from bile. Despite the chaos of the current moment, he still whipped his head around at the sound of that, as if hearing the name Aaron desperately falling from your lips was more attention-grabbing than the rest of the team gathering around him trying to stem the bleeding.
“It looks worse than it is,” said Rossi, peering through the holes in Hotch’s mangled sleeve. “It was just buckshot, and he barely hit you. Nothing a few stitches won’t fix.”
He turned out to be right, thank god, and later that afternoon, Hotch was freshly bandaged and sitting across from you on the return flight to Quantico.
So, yeah, the “lying to yourself” thing wasn’t going so well at that moment. Hotch was absorbed in paperwork while the rest of the team napped - because of course he was; even being shot didn’t sway his apparently relentless refusal to relax - and each time he winced at the movement of his arm, your vice grip around your chest tightened a little more.
He must have sensed you staring, because he looked up, frown softening slightly as he saw the concern on your face.
“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine,” he assured you with a half smile.
Teetering on an emotional precipice, too scared to respond for fear of falling over the edge, you went back to your reading. After a few minutes of listening to him write while not turning a single page in your book, he set his pen down and took a breath.
“You were screaming my name,” he said, quietly, despite you two being the only ones awake.
“What?”
“Earlier,” he clarified, “when we went into the house. I could hear you outside, yelling my name.”
You looked at him, incredulous. “Of course I did. I heard the shotgun go off. Clearly,” you gestured at his arm, “I had a reason to be worried.”
He shook his head and cleared his throat, as if you didn’t understand the question. “Dave and Emily were with me. Any of us could have gotten hit. You only yelled for me.”
Oh.
You shrugged. “You’re the team leader. It’s my instinct to call for you when something goes wrong."
It was a lie, and a bad one at that, but Hotch gave you an unreadable look and let the subject drop.
The rest of the flight was uneventful, and when you finally made it back to your apartment, you had no plans other than to sleep off the stress of the case and the embarrassment of Hotch calling your actions into question. Garcia, however, wasn't about to let that happen.
BAU-tiful People Group Chat
Garcia: *added You to the conversation*
Garcia: Ok, my lovely children, I know you’re all tired, but I miss your faces, so I’ll see u at Whimsy tonight at 9! Notice I didn’t use a question mark bc it is NOT a question!
You knew from overhearing the team talk that Whimsy was a bar downtown they liked to frequent, but you’d never been invited before. Despite your overwhelming exhaustion, the idea of going out with the team, of finally feeling accepted by them, was enough to make you amenable to the concept. It may have seemed insignificant on the surface, but Garcia adding you to their group chat was the biggest welcome gesture you’d received yet.
Morgan: Only if you wear that dress you know I like ;)
You lived for the day they would realize they were actually flirting with each other instead of just pretending to.
Prentiss: Garcia… you’re killing me… but you know I’ll be there.
JJ: Contacting the babysitter as we speak.
Morgan: Fuck yeah!!! Pretty Boy, you in?
Reid: Can’t we ever go somewhere quiet?
As the group chimed in with various iterations of, “Shut up, Reid,” you hesitantly typed out a text to confirm your attendance. You were excited, of course, but nervous to be the new kid at their favorite hangout. After today's events, though, the desire not to be sober won out over nerves.
You: I’ll be there! Thanks for the invite!
Rossi: Hope you kids are ready for me to drink you under the table, as usual.
Morgan: Eyyy, you KNOW we party hard! See y’all tonight.
____________
Turns out, Morgan was not exaggerating. Not even a little bit. By the time you arrived, 15 minutes late, everyone looked to be at least 3 shots deep. Garcia ran over to greet you, squealing, and wrapped you in a suffocating hug.
“I’m so glad you came! What do you drink? Tequila? I’ll grab the next round!”
You laughed and confirmed that tequila sounded great, and as she scurried off to the bar with Morgan on her heels, you had a chance to look around.
The atmosphere of the club surprised you - it was all glass and steel and modernity, packed with people dancing to something with intense bass - not the low-key joint you’d pictured the team wanting to unwind at. But as you watched JJ, Prentiss, and Rossi cheer on Reid as he threw back a shot, doubling over in hysterics as he coughed and sputtered at the taste, you realized that this place was just loud and energetic enough to keep them from thinking about anything other than work. In that way, you definitely saw the appeal.
“I come bearing shots!” Garcia yelled as her and Morgan made it back to the table. “Grab yours… here we go- whoops! Alright, everyone got theirs?”
She turned to you, grinning behind a pair of hot pink spectacles. “Cheers not ONLY to rescuing four kidnapped children alive, but also to our lovely intern and her first Whimsy outing!”
The team erupted in cheers and you smiled back, downing the tequila. You chatted with the group while Garcia ordered more drinks, and then more drinks, and soon you felt a pleasant buzz filling your head.
“Morgan, you better ask me to dance right now before I go find another man to do the job,” Garcia said with a wink in his direction.
Morgan grinned and mock-bowed, holding out a hand for her to take, and led her off to the dancefloor.
“Should we join them?” JJ asked around the table.
“Someone’s gotta make sure they don’t do anything worth getting kicked out for,” Prentiss shot back. You giggled and followed the girls, leaving Rossi and Reid behind at the table in the midst of a heated debate about childhood brain development that you couldn’t even hope to comprehend.
Not long after you started dancing, you felt a gentle tap on your shoulder and turned around, looking up into the stunning green eyes of a man who looked to be about your age. It was hard to really tell what he looked like in the dim lighting, but by the way Prentiss was giving you a thumbs up and mouthing, “Go for it,” from your side, he was good enough for you.
“Do you want to dance?” he asked above the music. You smiled and nodded in confirmation, letting him wrap his arms around your waist and pull you to his hips.
He knew how to move, that was for certain. He ground against your backside lightly, snaking his hands around your stomach. You weren’t used to this kind of thing - dancing with random men at bars, letting them touch you like this - but the combination of the music and the booze and the relief at the last case being over was making you feel more free than you had in recent memory.
You exchanged grins with Morgan, who was dancing a few feet away in a much more R-rated manner with Garcia. The man behind you (whose name you didn’t know, but who cared?) leaned down to kiss your neck and you arched against him in response, reaching up to run your hand through his hair.
Throughout the song, you had rotated back to facing the table where the rest of your team was sitting. You glanced over, saw Reid and Rossi still deep in discussion, along with another man in a black button-up with a very familiar side profile and-
Hotch.
Hotch was here, and as if the powers that be were insistent upon proving to you that the opposite of serendipity existed, at the exact moment you had that realization, he turned and made direct eye contact with you. Drunk, wearing a skintight dress, a random man grinding on your ass, and staring right back at your Unit Chief at the motherfucking Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Your heart dropped to your stomach, and if you had been drunker, you might have hurled tequila all over the dancefloor. Instead, you pulled away from the mystery man behind you, ignoring his shocked, “Wait!” and beelined to the bar.
“Tequila. Shot. Please, I’m sorry, just saw someone I didn’t expect to,” you blurted out to the bartender, swearing you could feel Hotch’s eyes on your back from across the club.
The bartender, probably having seen much worse, nodded in understanding and poured your drink. You gulped it down, wiped your mouth, and leaned on the bar to get your bearings.
It’s not weird. It’s not. It’s a bar, it’s outside of work hours, it’s perfectly fine that you’re buzzed and dancing and having fun. Everyone else is!
Really, it wasn’t that you were worried about your job, or even that he would judge you (he probably would, but that was unavoidable regardless of the setting), it was just that you hadn’t mentally prepared yourself for the possibility that he would come. He was in the group chat - obviously, if he had seen Garcia’s invite - but had never struck you as the social type, the kind of boss that would interact with his team outside of work.
“Did you see that Hotch is here?” Prentiss asked breathlessly, appearing at the bar beside you.
Apparently, you weren’t the only one surprised.
“I did,” you whispered back, despite the thumping music and the rowdy patrons making it logically impossible for your words to reach the table 20 feet away. “Does he usually join you guys?”
“Never,” she said, before thinking and correcting herself, “Not in years, anyways. When Haley… we used to drag him out, but we stopped after a while.”
“Why do you think he came tonight?"
She shrugged. “Who knows? Far be it from me to explain why Hotch does anything.” An idea seemed to pop in her head, and she grinned. “Maybe it’s because of you!”
“M-me?” Your reaction to the suggestion wasn’t nearly as nonchalant as you’d tried for, but Prentiss was too drunk to notice.
“Yeah, gotta help initiate the intern on her first night out, right?” She grinned and clapped you on the shoulder, then turned away to head back to the dancefloor, leaving you alone. You sighed, gathered yourself as much as you could considering the effects of the tequila, and turned around to go greet him.
“Hey, Agent Hotchner. Didn’t expect to see you tonight!”
“Yes, well. Thought I’d show up for a bit; it’s been a while.” He gave you a tight lipped smile then looked back down at his glass of whisky, the awkward energy palpable.
Probably because he just saw you basically dry-humping some random dude.
“Well, I’m glad you came! Feel free to, uh, come dance if you want! Morgan and Garcia are showing us all up,” you said, gesturing to where Morgan and Garcia were in fact drawing the attention of several onlookers.
He chuckled at that. “They’re certainly a sight to behold, aren’t they?”
You nodded in agreement and headed back to the bar, the brief conversation pointing you towards yet another drink. Talking to him was so easy , sometimes, and others it was like pulling teeth to get a human response out of him. Could you blame him, though? Your last one-on-one interaction was you basically inviting yourself over to his apartment with takeout and listening to him spill his guts about his dead wife and kid, and he probably felt uncomfortable with you after that, and then you went right to this case without any chance for things to go back to normal, and then he got shot, and oh my god, you didn’t even ask him how his arm was doing, how fucking rude can you be, dumbass? and-
“Whoops! Shit, I’m sorry!”
You looked at the person you’d just bumped into in the midst of your internal crisis.
“Hey, it’s you!”
The man you’d been dancing with earlier, now much more obviously handsome in the brighter lights of the bar area, grinned in recognition.
“Hey, I thought I’d scared you off there!”
You laughed and shook your head. “No, I’m sorry. Just saw my boss and freaked out a little bit.”
“Oh shit, your boss is here?” he asked. “That’s uncomfortable, damn. I’m sorry.”
“No worries, it’s just… yeah. Anyways. Wanna pick up where we left off?” you asked, more desperate than ever to get Hotch out of your head. If he didn’t want to see you having a wild night, he shouldn’t have come to the club.
He took your hand, looking pleased. “Lead the way.”
It really was so much easier, you thought, to let yourself feel attraction for guys like this. Uncomplicated, willing to take what you give them, no backstory to speak of. They weren’t riddled with tragic history, unattainable in both position and personality, not to mention impossible to even imagine ever returning your feelings. Guys like Cooper (you’d finally learned his name somewhere amid the grinding and groping) were easy and fun and they didn’t keep you up at night agonizing over whether that thing you said at work was impressive enough.
But then again, they didn’t give you the roller-coaster feeling in your stomach that Aaron Hotchner did every time you locked eyes.
And lock eyes you did - an increasingly frequent number of times, actually. It seemed like whenever you turned to face his direction, he was staring you down. He always went back to his conversation with Rossi and Reid, but you noticed that he seemed to get more and more pissed off with every song that played. His frown was deepened, his expression dark, and you could tell even from a distance that his knuckles were white from gripping his glass.
You shrugged it off as Hotch being Hotch - who knew what that man was thinking? And besides, you were trying to forget him, damn it. At least, that was until a particularly raunchy song came on and you were in the middle of getting your ass felt up, when you felt a hand squeeze your shoulder and whip you around, bringing you face-to-face with your boss himself.
“Hey, what’s going on? Is something wrong?” you asked, utterly bewildered as to why he was interrupting you.
He ignored you, instead staring down Cooper, who very quickly decided Hotch wasn’t one to fuck with and walked away.
“Hotch! Is there a case? Should I grab the others?”
He shook his head. “Can you come with me, please?”
Perplexed, you acquiesced (not that you had much of a choice, with the way he was gripping your elbow) and followed him through the crowd, out the back door, and into an alley. He let go of you then, sighing and crossing his arms.
Your mind was wild with questions - did you do something you shouldn’t have? Get too drunk? Everyone was drunk, though, and you weren’t even half as wasted as some of the others. Did Reid or Rossi tell him something bad about you? Were you about to somehow get yourself fired off the clock?
“The boy you were dancing with was bad news,” he said, after an uncomfortably long period of silence.
What the fuck?
“What the fuck?” you repeated, this time out loud, and you knew you shouldn’t be talking to him like this, but you were too caught off guard to conduct yourself more appropriately.
“He was a drug user,” Hotch said, as if that would explain everything.
“A drug user,” you repeated back, no less confused.
“Cocaine,” he continued. “He was high - his pupils were dilated, he was rubbing his nose, and he's been to the bathroom several times.”
“So… you’re going to arrest him? For doing cocaine?” you asked, still baffled as to what he was insinuating.
“What? No,” he said, “I’m trying to warn you not to get involved.”
You had entered some parallel universe, you decided. There was no other explanation for your boss, a man you’d known all of four months, dragging you outside a bar on a Friday night and telling you not to dance with a hot stranger because he was on cocaine.
You took a deep breath, trying to calm yourself before you really did get yourself fired. “Sir, I appreciate the concern, but I don’t think it’s really any of your business.”
His face hardened at that. “It is exactly my business,” he said, eyes boring a hole through your skull, “to watch out for things that may compromise my team.”
“Compromise your team?” you repeated his words again. “I was dancing, not getting engaged to the guy.”
“Should I allow you to dance with a sexual sadist if it’s just dancing?” he pressed, using the stern voice that usually caused any sort of dissent to whither and die right in your throat.
It didn’t work this time, probably because he was acting fucking insane. “Are you seriously comparing a sexual sadist to a guy who does cocaine while he’s out partying?”
“It’s not just while he’s out partying, by the way he conducted himself, he was a chronic-”
“It doesn’t matter!” you said, nearly yelling now. “You had no right! I'm sorry, what are you, my dad?!”
His eyes flashed at that. “If I hadn’t already had to sit through an 8 hour surgery not knowing if Garcia was going to make it out alive because her date shot her, then perhaps I would have no right. But as it stands, I do. Please be more careful with who you associate with, even if it’s just dancing.”
He spat that last part out, more vitriolic than you’d ever seen him, and stalked back inside. You were left outside in the alley, alone, reeling from confusion surrounding the entire interaction and shock at the emotional charge he’d leveled at you.
Reentering the bar, you saw that Hotch’s seat had been vacated and his jacket was gone. You rolled your eyes, and on your way to the bathroom, nearly ran into Cooper again.
“Hey!” he said. “What was that all about? You good?”
You looked up at his face and for the first time, noticed faint traces of white dust around his nose. He looked keyed up, jumpy - his pulse racing and visible on his carotid. You sighed.
“I’m good. Just not in the mood right now, sorry,” and pushed past him into the bathroom.
Hotch was an emotionally stunted asshole with a control complex, but he was also never fucking wrong.

Your Losty Heartbreak and Your Spy Kids Debut 😎🖊📚
Sigh. The curse of being a young adult, I tell ya.
You are annoyed.
Yes, two months after the breakup you are still completely heartbroken, even though, yes, it was your genius idea to break up with the love of your life: a man that girls only dream about having as a S/O….
but it was a selfless decision.
Aone Takanobu deserved more, better… than you. That was your rationale.
It’s not fair of you to just accept the perfect man because he was lost enough to lock onto you and not someone on his level.
While it was a selfless decision , it was still a decision you selfishly regretted because …you were so in love with that man at the time that you did it….
You are….
But you will stifle those emotions so that he can get over you and hopefully see his own worth.
But that didn’t mean you couldn’t be annoyed. Because you were. And at what, exactly? Well:
After dating and breaking up with him, Aone had females constantly approaching him. A/N: Not constantly but it felt that way for you ofc lol
You guess it’s nice that the females of Date Teko gave him the courtesy of one month to get over you but STILL!
Kusa and Katana said that Takanobu’s admirers shot up because everyone witnessed how he treated you, how amazing he was to you, and they fell for that along with his looks.
Your ex’s new admirers are hoping they can get a man that just as inwardly beautiful as he is outwardly and hopefully he will like them, too
In other words: They want what you had.
And what did you want?
Well:
You wanted to rip some hair out. Yours or theirs? You’ll leave that up to subjective interpretation.
EVERY TIME you walked past your ex—that you still love—’s locker there was some brat or another staring up at him in admiration like he was Mount fucking Everest.
You wanted to scream.
but isn’t this what you wanted, Y/N? Your Mountain man to find someone else? Your conscience would ask.
Shut the hell up, conscience. You’d bark back.
You heard from Katana who was keeping tags on his every admirer that he denied them all dates (which defeats the purpose of your break-up, but you smiled nonetheless) but that Aone did agree to host a study session with a group of girls that apparently begged/needed his help in all subjects before finals.
give me a fucking break, you and your conscious agreed.
“Ugh. He’s too kind for his own good. Can’t he see those girls just want an excuse to be near him?!?!” You raged about the study session as you peered closely through the passenger side window to make sure that Kusa got inside her house safely. It was 6pm, and you had just heard the news while on the way home from dinner at your favourite restaurant. Katana drove. From her doorstep, Kusa waved at you before closing her door.
This Saturday, your best friends forced you on your first outing since the breakup, dressing you and even doing your makeup despite your complaining about leaving the house. You had to admit that the food that you did order at the restaurant was decent enough, but really—you would much prefer to still be in bed, flipping through pictures of Aone and Perdu and having a good cry.
Katana rolled her eyes as she stopped at a red light, responding to your initial question. “Ugh. Yeah, they are smarter than we thought. But you’re okay with this, right? I mean this is what you said you wanted when you broke up with him. You said you want him to find a new girl,”” Katana fished for your true feelings, sounding a lot like your annoying conscience.
You sulked, picturing other females near the man you are in love with. It made you sick. But, instead, you said, “Of course I am Okay with it. I want him to be the happiest he can be.”
Katana fixed her eyes on the road and bit her tongue so that she wouldn’t laugh.
You had no idea why you weren’t being fully honest with your friends, but perhaps it made you believe it more the more you said it aloud. “I know Kusa had that assignment to do tonight… and you have that one with Kenji tomorrow, right? so do you want to come over? My mom got me another tub of cookie dough ice cream, and we can rewatch Bad Girls Club again.” You asked Katana in that voice that meant you didn’t want to be alone tonight.
Katana smirked. It was an evil smirk. “I’ll do you one better.”
“Uhhh… Katana….you missed my turn.” Your eyes widened when the cheer captain passed your street, and then passed her own street a few seconds later. “Katana!”
“Word on the cheer team is that Aone-san’s first study session ends in 20 at the local library. I wanna check it out.”
“What?! No you will not—!” You yelled, but you couldn’t help the surge of excitement that flew through your body thinking about seeing that man again. It was always like this.
“—Oh, lighten up— it’s not like I will be joining the damn study session.”
“You won’t?” You asked, surprised.
“Obviously not! Muri is studying something else there, so I need to give her back her notes anyway. It’s only a plus that I’ll get to see how desperate those girls are being with my besties ex. Incognito, kay? I was going to drop you off first and go, but it looks like you don’t wanna be alone. Right?”
Your pretty best friend waited a few seconds for a response, and when she didn’t get one, she nodded. “Exactly.” She turned into the school’s practically empty parking lot, finding her favourite spot. “So, you can stay in the car. No prob. And I won’t tell you anything about it.”
You frowned, watching as Katana reached in the backseat for her purse so that she could take out the notes she had for Muri.
“Okay,” you whispered anxiously.
“I’ll be like, 10 minutes.” The brunette removed her keys from the ignition and stepped outside of her car.
You stayed where you were as Katana’s figure disappeared into the one of the Date Teko’s many entrances. You began to think about what your friend was going to see in there: Aone leaning over the shoulder of pretty Date Teko girls? Helping them with their homework the way he would help you? These girls smelling his fresh icy mountain scent, and leaning in closer, the way you would to him?
Naturally, you began to panic internally.
You pictured the girls twirling their hair flirtatiously and telling him that they didn’t understand when they did, just to keep him hovering over them longer. The same way you used to.
😤😤😤
Your foot started tapping on its own inside Katana’s car, thinking about how your lost ex-boyfriend wouldn’t even pick up any of it as flirting, ugh.
Your imagination created even more concerning visuals: more giggling, more oblivious Aone, more shoulder brushing, more oblivious Aone, and then some more….. yeah. Should it really have come as no surprise that you soon found yourself hidden behind a dusty bookshelf in the anatomy section of your school’s library on a Saturday, squatted down and peeping through the slits between books to catch glimpses of your ex boyfriend hosting a study session?!
You blamed your active imagination.
Behind the dusty shelves, you whimpered because the obstructed vision due to the books covered the white haired beauty perfectly. You held a disgusting book to the right a bit.
“Oh,” your stomach flipped. “He looks so cute.” You put on a 🥺 face when you noticed how utterly adorable a standing Takanobu looked decked out in forest green sweatpants and a matching hoodie with the hood on, and his white hair barely visible.
Your stomach flips were quickly bumped away by sheer annoyance as you saw him then do exactly what brought you up here, just as you thought: innocently leaning down to help a blonde third-year girl you knew by the name of Sutairu Elyts with a question she was asking. She was smiling way too much for someone doing boring ass school work on Saturday, you noted. Flipping her hair, giggling, and obnoxiously putting her cleavage in Aone’s line of sight. You picked up the dusty library book that was obstructing your view and stopped yourself from tossing it at Sutairu— instead choosing to toss it to the side without a care in the world, trying to get a closer look at how close the girl was going to get while Aone answered her question.
You were close to literally poking your head through the bookshelf hole completely, when someone to the left of your hiding spot cleared their throat very loudly. You jumped, bumping your head and hissing in pain.
You removed your head from the bookshelf and looked up at the cause of your newfound migraine.
There stood Katana, her arms crossed and a knowing smile on her face. “You got here faster than I thought,” She reached down to help you up. “Now, come on. None of this amateur shit. You know my style. When it comes to cute boys: make it obvious, and make it count.”
***
Aone was in the middle of teaching Algebra to a group of students (he doesn’t register the fact that they are all conveniently female and all too well dressed for a study session) who had desperately begged him for his help, to the point where the teacher just asked Aone to do it.
He didn’t mind, the teacher offered him extra credit and everyone he was teaching was nice, they didn’t mind him being pretty silent, plus Kenji fully supported it. So why not? Aone mainly supported it because it was a great distraction from his broken heart and his plan….
Or so he thought it would be—before he spotted you in the library.
His heart skipped a beat because he absolutely was not expecting to see you today. His plan wasnt supposed to be put into action until Monday! Trying not to freak out, Aone watched you enter from a side that wasnt the entry way—which is pretty odd—but he shoved the thought to the side anyway because there you were, looking busy.
“Wow.” Takanobu couldn’t stop himself from mouthing when his eyes found you. He mouthed it to himself, of course, but it caused the observant participants in his study group to whip around to see what he was looking at.
you were dressed pretty casually, coming from dinner with the girls, but Aone hadn’t seen you dressed in anything other than your school or cheer uniforms since your breakup, so it took him by surprise
Not to mention you looked really, really, really good:
Aone watched you scan the bookshelves with Katana—which, if Takanobu was thinking straight— he would realistically call bs on you ever coming to the library for no reason, ESPECIALLY on a Saturday— but you looked too gorgeous to him to care
Now that he is working alongside you in a project, he has been able to crawl out of depression a bit, simply because your mere presence made him feel whole again, so he basked in the delight he felt any time he was able to see you.
Aone realized that even though he struck out the first time and failed to make you want to be with him, he had nothing to lose if he tried again.
The premise of Aone’s plan presides on the idea that you are the only girl he wants. Therefore, he just has to prove that to you. Silently. Strategically.
So that’s the only reason why Aone was able to to shift his focus right now and look away from you, effectively returning to helping his study group and making them forget you even walked in.
Aone’s mission is to become the man that you want and need, naturally. He will exude more confidence: which is a testament to the fact that he was here right now: tutoring a bunch of girls who have asked him out and he has rejected before because of you,
He wants word to get back to you that your ex is the type of guy who knows how to be just friends with people who had feelings for him. Just in case you wanted to start there with him.
He wants to be your friend. Aone wants to be anything to you but a stranger. It’s the only way his heart stops aching and if that’s all you can give him is a friendship after this project is over, then that is what he would willingly accept!
Aone forced himself to look back down, getting up to step around the circular table to help with the other girls’ study guides.
He was able to keep his cool for the most part, but almost lost it twice...
Once when you dropped a book and bent down to pick it up, showcasing how amazing your butt looked in those jeans.
Aone cleared his throat to get his own attention back and turned away quickly when he felt a familiar stir under his sweatpants. He stuffed his hands deep in his sweatpants pockets and directed his energy back to the paper in front of him. He erased an answer for one of his students and plugged in the correct one.
The second time Takanobu almost lost his cool was when he heard you make a cute noise and his eyes flicked back up to you. You were trying to reach a book that was too high for you but probably met the height of his ear, your hand above your head, your bodyweight on your toes which gravitationally rose your top up as well, exposing the naked skin on your lower back.
Aone’s throat went dry and he bit back a groan because the last time he’d stared at that lower back of yours so intensely: you were in a perfect arch, naked, using his dick to pleasure yourself when he told he was on the phone.
Cue hands in pockets again.
He recalled how that section of your back had a light layer of sweat on it back then, making it glisten as he bit his lip, trying not to moan to the feeling of your tight and juicy walls running up and down his length. Holy, shit, that feel good.
Aone began thinking about helping you get that book and then fucking you against that bookshelf you were leaning on: holding you up in his arm, the other hand used to place it behind your head as a cushion so that you did not harm yourself when he sheathed his big dick inside your absolutely perfect box, so hot and so delicious, and soo hard not to cum inside within the first minute…..
👁👅👁 Aone’s eyes glazed over to the point where one of his tutor-ies had to snap their fingers in front of his face.
Highly embarrassed, Takanobu pulled it together ASAP, muttering a quick and sincere apology and thinking only of his plan. Trusting in his plan, he refused to look up in your general direction again. He didn’t trust himself to.
***
“He barely looked my way….” You sobbed into your cookie dough ice cream later that night, Katana rubbing your back and removing your hair out the tub.
“Please, Y/N,” Katana begged, absolutely gutted seeing her best friend like this. “Please be honest with yourself and make sure you truly stand by the decision you made.”

A New Aone and a Perfect Plan? ✅🤩
Mountain Man put absolutely all of his energy into his plan to get you back. His understanding is that you broke up with him because he wasn’t good enough for you, so that means he would just have to make himself good enough for you. While Kenji was completely against Aone trying to get back the girl who broke his heart, Kenji found himself agreeing with the plan since it meant that his best friend would be speaking, playing volleyball, and overall living life again while it was in action. The plan was to essentially fake it till you make it—show you that Takanobu could be the man you deserved.
The gist of the plan was for Aone to disallow himself to be zombie-like anymore, because you probably didn’t like that. He started spending more time with his friends again, and he was eating again. He was banking on this plan, and if it didn’t work—sure, he’d be crushed for the rest of his life—but at least he’d have no regrets. It wouldn’t be easy, he’d have to speak back to other females kindly letting them down when all he wanted to do was speak to you. He’d have to ignore you when you walked by which meant going against his every instinct, and he’d have to speak to you confidently in class when you two were working on the project and small talk about your lives, when all he wanted to do was lean in and kiss you until he could taste you even when he pulled away.
Thoughts of you consumed him, still, but they were now hopeful thoughts. He was not going to let his dream girl walk away that easily.
A/N: GO BABY GOOOOO
You, on the other hand, took this new and confident Aone as a sign that he was getting over you. He didn’t seem very sad anymore, you didn’t see that same dejected and lost eyes you saw when he pushed his best friend away from you. You saw intensity there, like he was now focused on a new task in his life. It confused you, and it hurt like a bitch, because deep down you knew he’d move on soon and you wouldn’t.
But this is what you wanted, right? 🙄🙄Repeated your conscience, again. You really wanted to fight her.
“Y/N, you seem out of it today.” Mountain Man stopped writing the outline of the content analysis in class to stare down at you. You could see the concern in his eyes, but you refused to believe it was anything more than the concern anyone would feel for an ex turned friend, and nothing more.
Embarrassed, you realized that you must have zoned-out, and now this gorgeous man that you wanted to jump was calling you out on your odd behaviour. “W-was I?’ You shook your head then looked down in your lap. “Sorry.”
Aone placed his pencil down, heart pounding because he wanted that frown of yours to disappear so badly. “Is it about your University Cheerleading tryouts?” He asked kindly, too kindly—if you had any hope of getting over him in the next 5 years.
You looked up at him, confused as to why he’d even mention that.
The white haired beauty blushed. “Kogane—he, uh, well…” Aone took a second to look away and collect his thoughts because your big beautiful eyes were making him lose his train of thought. He reminded himself of his plan and collected himself, returning to your gaze. “Kogane-san mentioned to Kenji and I this morning that Kusa needed someone to film her audition tape, because that is the only way cheerleaders are able to send in your tryouts for schools that are too far away, correct?”
“Oh,” You nodded. “Ya—“
Aone continued without missing a beat. “I know Kogane is helping film Kusa’s, and you mentioned yesterday that Katana is out of town for a camp… so, and feel free to say no: but I’d love to offer you my help, Y/N. With filming and editing.”
There was a pause in which you just looked at Aone with those big beautiful eyes that he thinks about 24/7.
Afraid that he might be coming onto way too strong, which goes against his super slow plan, Takanobu adds: “As friends. Offer you my help as friend.”
Your heart sunk, but he looked so sweet asking, not to mention you really did need to get on that tryout instead of pushing it off until you miss it completely and don’t end up going to University—
If you didn’t get a cheer scholarship you were screwed; Aone knew this. Not to mention you would love to see him more; Aone did not know this.
“I’ve taken photography as my elective for the past three years and do pretty well in that class in terms of grades, so I just thought…” Mountain Man was scared shitless, nervously listing off his accomplishments like this was an interview…. mostly due to the fact that you hadn’t answered him yet. Too fast, she can tell you want her back—now she’ll never give you another chance. Failure. Aone opened his mouth to retract his offer, but you interrupted him before he could get the first word out.
“Um, yes. Sure. I’d love your help, Aone-san. I promise it won’t take long. Thank you so much.”
Aone nodded even though he was bursting at the seams inside. Mountain Man couldn’t believe it. After being broken up with because your feelings weren’t there, you agreed to spend non-school related time with him?! The middle blocker couldn’t help but think that you wouldn’t have said yes, had he still been acting like a zombie. Actually, he wouldn’t even have dared asked, if he was still acting like a zombie. Now he gets to help you and see you more than he has since the breakup, and he considers this like a gift! Yes!
“Great. Just tell me where and when you would like to have your audition, and I will be there.” A very cool reply.
You even rewarded him even more with a smile. “How about next Tuesday? Here on the field since it’s getting warm out again? I need to rehearse a lot and that gives me enough time.”
“Understood.” A cool second later, Takanobu had to excuse himself to the washroom so that he could celebrate in silence. He texted his friends and took a deep breath.
Selfishly, Aone also wanted to help you with this particular audition because he wanted you to go to the same University as he and Kenji. He wanted to help you with your future assignments and he wanted to see you everyday. How great would that be? A little torturous, too. But if you were on a cheer team and happy, then: mostly great.
Baby steps, Mountain Man sighed contentedly. He would get you back in baby steps, and this was the first one.
He just had to keep following the plan.

Doki Doki Literature Club Secret Santa gift for the @ddlcgiftexchange for @maxcaulfield! Can also be read on my ao3. /// - - - ///
Monika missed Sayori. It’s not like she’s clingy or anything, and it’s not like Sayori is dead - god forbid. But she hasn’t shown up to school at all today, and being surrounded by people whose names and personalities belong to a wind Monika has no right to drift along with makes Sayori’s absence seem much more prominent. She wonders if her girlfriend - wow, that’s still so weird to say - is sick. It’s the middle of Winter and there’s been snow every day for the past few weeks. She’s surprised that she herself hasn’t gotten even a hint of a cold yet, considering how prone she is to seasonal changes. Best to not look a gift horse in the mouth, she thinks. She makes a plan to visit Sayori after school today. If she is sick then it can’t hurt to visit and keep her company while she recovers. Maybe she’ll have enough time to stop by the small cafe that’s a few blocks down the main road and pick up a small drink to bring over to Sayori’s place for her. A salted vanilla cream iced coffee topped with whipped cream and sprinkles, if they have any. Sayori’s favorite. It’s not her business to question her love’s taste in drinks, although she can’t help herself and questions it anyway. As long as she’s happy then that’s what matters in the end. Two fingers snap in front of her face and she looks up to see a slightly disgruntled Natsuki in front of her face and a curiously worried Yuri in behind her. “Earth to Monika,” Natsuki says as she leans back. “Yuri called your name like seven times.” “Actually it was five,” Yuri corrects. “If it wasn’t for the intense stare you were giving your desk I would’ve thought that I was being purposefully ignored, if I had to be honest. Are you feeling alright?” Monika feels a bit flustered at being caught in her thoughts. She didn’t realize how unaware she became of her surroundings. “Yes! Yes, sorry, I’m fine. I was just thinking -” about Sayori. “I was just thinking.” A beat passes, and the looks on both of the other girls’ faces tell her all she needs to know about how obvious her thoughts were to them. “Thinking... about Sayori?” Natsuki finishes for her, her question coming out more as a statement. Of course it’s obvious. She’s always thinking about Sayori. “Am I that predictable?” Natsuki bluntly replies “yeah” at the same time Yuri apologetically says “kind of.” Yuri puts a thread of her hair behind her ear and steps closer to sit in the desk next to Monika’s. “It’s just that... since you two have started dating two months ago you’ve been really... close?” she offers. Natsuki nods. “You guys have been filthily in love.” “Natsuki!” “What? I meant it in a good way.” Yuri sighed. “Of course.” She shifts her attention back to Monika. “Despite Natsuki’s unique description, she’s correct. You and Sayori had been almost inseparable since you’ve gotten together.” “Not like it’s a bad thing,” Natsuki assures. “As much as I complain about you two making constant kissy-eyes at each other, I gotta admit that it’s pretty sweet.” Yuri nods in agreement, and while Monika’s stomach gets riled up with thousands of embarrassment butterflies, her friends’ encouraging words fill her with giddiness. She reaches up and playfully pokes Natsuki’s right cheek, right where her single dimple lay. She’s both surprised and not at all shocked at the softness of it. “Funny how you two call us cute when you guys are downright adorable.” Both Yuri and Natsuki blush, the latter jerking her head back from her finger. “Yeah, yeah,” she mumbles. She points her own finger back at Monika. “Don’t try to change the subject! Sayori isn’t here and now you’re feeling all gloomy and stuff.” “Is she feeling unwell?” Yuri asks. “It’s quite unusual for her to miss a school day, but then again it’s also very cold and muggy outside now, and the weather has been getting worse these past few days.” “She might be feeling sick,” Natsuki says. “If she is sick then tell her to stay home and get better. I don’t want to get sick too.” “I’ll be sure to inform her of your concern, ‘Suki,” Monika promises. “I’m going to see her after school today to make sure she’s fine anyway.” “Good plan, but my warning extends to you too. Don’t come to school if you get sick.” “I won’t, I won’t.” “Make sure Sayori stays hydrated and washes her hands often,” Yuri also speaks up. Monika feels like she’s being talked to by two parents. “And make sure she’s eating properly, maybe something light and not too heavy, and -” Yuri pauses, trailing off for a second. “... Are we sharing poems today?” Monika thinks, resting her face in the palm of her hand. “Hmm... I think Sayori would want to read our poems with us. We could read it today and show her when she comes back, but I think she’d want to be here with us when we read it for the first time, so I’d hold off on it for now. If that’s alright with you two, of course.” Natsuki shrugs. “Fine by me. Honestly, it’ll give me time to look it over and see if I wanna change anything about it.” “Yes,” Yuri agrees. “I worked hard on my poem. I would prefer if all of us had the chance to read it together.” The school bell rang overhead, signaling the end of the school day. Monika got up, stretching her arms above her head. “Then we are in agreement. We’ll wait to share our poems until Sayori can join us. I’ll see you two tomorrow!” She slings her book bag over her shoulder and begins walking toward the classroom door. As she pushes the door open Natsuki’s voice rings through the classroom. “Can’t wait to read the love poem you wrote about Sayori, Moni!” Monika leaves, blushing hard, wandering what she did to deserve friends like this. So what if her poem may or may not have been about Sayori? She didn’t use her name. It could’ve been about anything. It could have been about a deer, or a pond, or the sun. Ah, well. As long as Sayori likes it then it doesn’t matter. /// - - - /// Monika walks down Sayori’s street, the cafe she wanted to stop by having been closed earlier due to bad weather. She bundles her scarf tighter as the snow crunches beneath her feet with puffs of frozen air escaping from her nose. Her face felt numb and cold by the time she moved her scarf to cover half of it, but she’s glad she thought ahead enough to take her mittens with her. Her ears already feel like they’re about to fall off, she doesn’t need her fingers to feel the same way. She walks faster when she spots the clear distinction of Sayori’s house in her vision. She opens the gate and walks through it, careful as she goes up the porch stairs to the front door. She knocks once, twice for good measure, and waits. ... There’s no answer. She knocks a third time, waiting a bit longer, but the result is the same. No answer. She looks to her right at the small potted, and now dead, succulent on the railing next to the door. She lifts it up to find the spare key to the house underneath it and picks it up to unlock the door. “Sayori!” Monika yells out in the house to make her presence known and not scare her. She slips her shoes off on the shoe rack next to the door, and shrugs off her Winter attire - putting her mittens in her coat and putting both her coat and scarf on the coat rack. “It’s Monika! Are you awake?” She hears a thud from somewhere upstairs with Sayori herself appearing at the the top of the stairs a moment later. She’s still in her pajamas and it doesn’t look like she brushed her hair yet today, but the smile she gives when she lays her eyes on Monika completely outshines any of her disheveled appearance. “Moni!” Sayori shouts, her voice crackling a bit. Monika guesses it’s because she either just woke up or because she hasn’t used it in a while. She rushes down the stairs to give Monika a hug, which was gladly reciprocated. “I didn’t know you were coming over today! I would have... cleaned up a little... heh.” The house is spotless. “Did I wake you up?” she asks, patting her back. “Nah, I’ve been awake since this morning. I was just laying in bed all day...” Sayori trails off, her embarrassment opening a deep form of understanding between the two of them that they both know too well. Today must have been one of her low days then. They don’t talk about her depression too often, and while some days are still off for the both of them, their recoveries - especially Sayori’s - have made remarkable progress. Monika leans back to look at her, having to look slightly down, and wraps her arms around her neck. “I just wanted to check up on you since you weren’t at school today.” “Thank you.” Sayori rests her palms on the small of Monika’s back. Her large green eyes started making her slightly flustered so she focuses her sight on a beauty mark close to one of the eyes, high up on her cheek. “I wanted to,” Monika repeats. She gently pushes back one of Sayori’s arms so she can hold her hand. “Besides, if I didn’t come here then Natsuki and Yuri would have forced me to. They think you have a cold or something.” Sayori looks down at their intertwined fingers fondly. “Nope! I’m perfectly healthy, except for the occasional sneeze. But other than that I’m okay.” She squeezes Monika’s hand and notices how her nose is still slightly red from the chill outside. “It’s chilly outside, isn’t it? Do you want some cocoa?” “Sure.” Monika’s relieved that Sayori isn’t actually ill - though the idea of taking care of her sick girlfriend isn’t awful. She knows a good mushroom soup recipe. Maybe she can be her taste tester one day. Sayori leads her through the house to kitchen located in the far back of it. Although the outside of the house is cloudy and gray, the kitchen window is shining enough light to considerably brighten the room. Sayori takes out a small, decently sized pot along with cocoa powder, sugar, chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and a bag of peppermint candies out of a neighboring cabinet while Monika grabs the milk out of the fridge. “Going all out, huh?” Monika teases. She knows that the vanilla flavoring is for Sayori while the peppermint candies are for her. She’s touched knowing that she keeps a bag of her favorite candy at home - especially since she herself doesn’t particularly enjoy the taste of it. Sayori smiles at her after pouring some milk in the pot. “It’s Winter! We gotta celebrate it with the most Winter-y drink known to mankind. Plus going “all out” means it’s just gonna be more delicious to drink.” Monika slides up behind her and wraps her arms around her stomach as she whisks in the cocoa powder and sugar, playfully moving both of them side to side slightly as she does so. “You’re right. Hot chocolate shouldn’t be served any other way.” Sayori moves with her, happily whisking away. She thinks that she should put a radio in here sometime so that they could dance together to some music. “Could you reach over and put some chocolate chips in here for me?” She does just that, moving over to open the bag and pouring some of the contents of it into the warm pot. After seeing them start to melt, she goes to grab the whipped cream out of the fridge. “Okay! It’s done!” Sayori announces. She helpfully pours the chocolate into two cups for them, adding the vanilla extract to her own while Monika takes a spoon and scoops some whipped topping onto both cups, putting the spoon in the sink and the cream back in the fridge afterwards. “Thanks,” Sayori says gratefully. She takes a couple of peppermint candies out of the bag and puts them on the table. “Now for the fun part!” “The best part,” Monika agrees. Both of the girls raise their hands up and immediately slam them down on the candies, crushing them into pieces. Monika picks up the remains and sprinkles them on her cup, completing her drink. With everything finished and the kitchen clean of their messes, they both start heading up towards Sayori’s room, carefully holding their drinks as to not spill it on the carpeted stairs. “I can’t wait to drink this,” Sayori says, pushing open her bedroom door with her hips. “It smells delicious.” “Be careful, though. Remember when we burnt our tongues on it last time?” “You mean when we dared each other to drink it without blowing on it or waiting for it to cool down?” “Yeah. I couldn’t taste anything for about three days.” “Do you wanna do that again?” “No.” Sayori laughs. They both move towards one side of the bedroom where two gigantic green and purple beanbag chairs rest against a wall and sit down them. The bags have seen some use, but they’re still nice and comfortable to sit on. They both spend a quiet moment sipping their drinks, Monika playfully knocking her feet against Sayori’s in a lazy game of footsie. Sayori smiles at her and pushes her own foot back softly. “Why didn’t you come to school today?” Monika asks as politely as she could. It’s not the best conversation starter, but she’s been curious and worried the entire day. Based on what Sayori said earlier she can easily guess, but she doesn’t want to make assumptions. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” Sayori’s smile dimmed, though more out of embarrassment than displeasure. Monika feels a bit bad for asking, but she rests a comforting hand on her shoulder, giving her a soft and reassuring smile in return. Sayori leans into her touch, taking another sip of her drink before speaking. “I just had a bad day today.” “Yeah?” “Yeah.” She remembers never being able to talk about her feelings this easily. Her bad days and her sad days - she couldn’t talk about them without feeling guilty, like she did something wrong by not being constantly cheerful or happy. She remembers the first time she tried to open up to Monika about her feelings, way back when they were “just friends” unknowingly longing to be closer, and she could barely speak past the rock in her throat and the tears stinging her eyes. Monika had been patient though, and kind, and Sayori had slowly grown confident and comfortable enough to talk with her about her depression and anxiety without feeling judged or lonely. Sayori runs her finger around the rim of her cup idly. It’s almost empty. “I woke up this morning and my limbs felt like there were anvils laying on them. My bones felt heavy and I couldn’t get up.” “Did you go back to sleep?” She nods. “Yup! When I woke up I felt a lot better.” Monika grins. “Sounds like your medication is working.” “Yeah! It’s giving me a lot more energy. A year ago I probably would’ve just stayed in bed.” Monika tilts her cup and pours the rest of her drink in her mouth, finishing it. “Progress is progress, and I’m really proud of you for sticking to it. It makes me happy to see you getting better more and more each day.” “Really?” Sayori asks softly. Her own drink is empty by now and sits on her floor abandoned. “Really.” Sayori feels bashful, the corners of her mouth turning upward with incredible shyness. She scoots over in her beanbag chair to lean against Monika’s beanbag instead so she should lay her head on her lap. Monika herself wraps her arms around Sayori comfortably, one arm laying lazily on her stomach while the other one rests around the broad of her back, effectively cuddling her. This is a nice time for a nap, Sayori thinks as the minutes tick by, blinking her eyes slowly. The steady breathing of her girlfriend soothes her to tiredness, a beat constant and safe and real. A faint and noticeable tune matching the steady rhythm of her own small breathing. She almost thinks she can hear Monika’s heartbeat even though her head is on her thighs and nowhere near her chest. “Are you comfortable?” Monika teases. Her voice is a bit softer, perhaps because she’s also being slightly lulled into sleep. “I can’t replace your bed, you know, but I don’t mind being your pillow.” Sayori hums. “Sorry, I was just enjoying how warm you are and how our breathing almost seems in sync.” Monika huffs a laugh. “Almost sounds poetic.” “I got a lot of practice. Speaking of which, how was the clubs’ poems today?” “Actually we decided not to read our poems today. Everyone wanted to wait for you to come back before sharing them.” Sayori stares at her, surprised. “What? Really?” Monika pokes her cheek playfully. “Of course. Sharing our poems wouldn’t be the same without you there. You make them feel special.” Sayori feels flattered, a warm swarm of butterflies pooling in her stomach hearing that praise. “I can understand that. I couldn’t imagine not sharing my poems with one of you guys.” “Good thing we’re saving them for tomorrow then, hm?” Sayori still looks at her, taking in her slightly heart-shaped face and freckles scattered across her face like a constellation. Monika closes her eyes again, once more falling asleep. The walk all the way to Sayori’s house from the school made her a lot more tired than she realized. Seeing Monika like this, so peaceful and soft, fills Sayori with such fondness that she makes the quick and brash decision to lean up and place a swift kiss on her lips before she fully fell asleep. Unsurprisingly, she tastes like peppermint and chocolate. How fitting for someone like her. Monika cracks one eye open at her and smiles. “Now that’s not really fair, is it? Kissing me when I’m not even looking at you.” She leans down to place her own sweet kiss on Sayori. Kissing can’t magically fix everything, but it’s a start.
