every so often I think of Isaac McAdoo's character arc from genuinely arrogant jerkass bully to Ultimate Non-Toxic-Masculinity Hero and Team Dad (not to mention stone-cold snack) and I get a little lower lip quiver
#he done so good!#ted lasso#isaac mcadoo#I love all the boys' arcs but there was something about isaacs#I think because atm there's so many issues around toxic masculinity in the news#and isaac remains *such* a blokey masculine bloke (with flaws! admitted flaws!) while still being such a good egg#does give you hope that some young men saw that and took inspiration from it

things i love about heartstopper 6/?
Characters that would be stereotypes in other stories are whole human beings.
Imogen and Isaac are the best examples I think. Imogen would just be the cool girl in another story, a bit ditzy, kind of fun, mostly there for the laughs. Here she is all those things, but she's also a deeply empathetic character, with understandable motivations. Even if you don't love her, you can understand her and sympathise with her. When Nick asks her "Do you ever feel like you're just doing things because everyone else is?", you can see the recognition in her face. That's her whole story across 3 seasons. And you care about her, you empathise with her, and you love her (well, I do), even though (because) she's a walking disaster a lot of the time.
Isaac deserves a whole post to himself (I LOVE HIM) so I'll save most of what I could say about him for that. But the sweet, book-loving, nerdy friend character could so easily be a caricature, and Isaac isn't. He's closer to that in S1, maybe because he was filling the place of Aled who has a whole backstory of his own and they hadn't quite figured out his role yet? But even in S1, his personality is never just book-loving nerd. He's funny and sassy and kind and insightful, and then over the seasons he becomes so much more than that. You can see why his friends love him. You also get a sort of feel for why he's so book-obsessed, when most similar characters "just are" with no real thought beyond "well they're a nerd". I think one of the things I love about his story is that his friends sort of accidentally pigeon-hole him, too, the way other stories often do. And part of his arc is pushing back against that, and them realising they need to do better (and then they do, which is so fucking good, I love them all so much!).
You can see this humanising process with the “villains” of the show, too.
Ben Hope, the worst person in the story (imo), has his main humanising moment in 'Sorry' (I think it was done better in the show than the comic, pls don't come for me). It breaks my heart every time, when that rainbow ocean gets close to his toes and he turns and walks away I wanna cry. Because it's so clear he could have been different, he could have chosen something better for himself and everyone around him. He could have chosen not to be entitled and cruel, and to not inflict his own pain and shame onto others. And he could have chosen this moment to do that too, but he doesn't. He cuts himself off from the possibility of freedom, which means he'll keep hurting other people and himself for who knows how long. (Sebastian Croft did such a good job with this character, he's so believably awful.) It's such a perfect moment. Even though I do feel real empathy and sadness for him, that doesn't make what he did okay and the show is always clear that he's wrong and he needs to be held accountable. Yes, we see that his family and environment led him here, but he could have made a different choice. He could have learnt from Charlie the way Nick did, but instead he tried to destroy all the parts of Charlie that would have helped him. We see Darcy struggling with similar pressures throughout S2, and they make a very different choice from Ben at the end of this same episode. We see how Ben got there, we see him as a full person, and we're never asked to approve of him or minimise the hurt he caused - it's basically spelled out in Ben and Nick's conversation in 'Family':
"I was going through some personal stuff." "I don't care, you hurt him!"
Probably the weakest characters in terms of being humanised are David and Harry. David has the most punchable face, but as the show progresses you can see a little bit of what’s underneath. It doesn’t make you like him and it’s not supposed to. But he’s not just a cardboard cutout. He’s a hurt little boy who, unlike Nick, leaned into the shittiest form of masculinity to try and get the validation he desperately wanted from his dad, and then everyone else. And it shows up irl for so many families. The older sibling who was just that bit older when their parents separated often has a much harder time adjusting, and often compensates in some shitty ways - especially if one of their parents is neglectful/toxic. On first glance, it's wild that Sarah managed to raise such different sons, but the context we get makes so much sense. Yeah, the "my parents are divorced/dad is a dickhead" manchild is a stereotype still, but there is an actual person there.
Harry is similar to David in terms of character, but probably gets the least humanising attention. He and David both like to poke at people until they get a reaction that they can be angry about. Harry gets a little bit of an arc of his own, but he never really gets far from the stereotypical bully - as Tao says, a "rich bellend". There are a couple of moments where you can see a human face underneath, though, if you're looking for it. His face when Nick stands up to him, there's more than just anger there. Or, perhaps, you can see when the anger hits and what's underneath it. You can see what drives his constant poking at people to get a reaction (especially if you've had to deal with assholes like that irl). There's insecurity, and sometimes a weird sense of shock when people snap at him, as though he didn't expect it - that's so true to life as well, and often something that gets left out of this stereotype in other stories. But later on, when he tells Ben he shouldn't call Imogen a bitch, you can also see something else there, the potential to be better, even if it's just for people like Imogen who he's friends with. (Maybe we'll see more of that in S4?) Props to Cormac Hyde-Corrin for those little moments, he did them really well.
I think what’s so valuable about the humanising moments for the “bad guys” of the show, even the tiny ones you have to look for, is that you are supposed to empathise with them to some extent, but you’re never asked to forgive them or absolve them. You understand more about who they are and sometimes why, but they’re still responsible for their choices. That's how people change, right? When we see their humanity and then expect better of them. It’s so important.

Babes this playlist SLAPS can I ask for commentary I want to match them all to their people and vibes and moments but I’m only S3 so I’m not sure yet!!
LET'S GOOOO OK honestly so many of these are just generally Pack Songs but some are more specific!!!
1 - No Surrender. Blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend! We made a promise! This is one of the most teen wolf songs of all time to ME it's about loyalty and dedication and remembrance!!!
2 - Are You Satisfied. A Lydia song, also perhaps a Stiles song. But also about the bite, the question of is it a gift or does it just drive away the people you care about?
3 - Let The Rain. ALLISON SONG ALLISON SONG if I owned this city I'd make it behave! If I were fearless I'd speak my truth! I wish I were brave!!!! I just!!!!!
4 - Start of Time. This song is from when spoilers but I think you've seen it already where Lydia first kisses Stiles to calm him down and the way the music bursts into the scene out of nowhere? Changed my life as a musical moment!!! Had to be there just for that!!!!
5 - We Are Young. I still love this song so much I mean! If you feel like falling down I'll carry you home tonight! It's about how they are just kids!how the show never loses that there is a lightness to that! But also especially in like season 5 there are moments when the group fails and then regroups and how they're not perfect but they'll rebuild again and again!
6 - mirrorball. Another Lydia song perhaps but mainly a Kira (BELOVED GIRL) song. There's a tenderness to the fear of it, this intimacy in the anxiety which is very her to me! Also I'm still a believer and I don't know why is applicable to so many characters.
7 - I Wanna Dance With Somebody. This is purely here for the Vibes tbh but the vibes feel right somehow???
8 - Like Real People Do. THE monster romance anthem! We should just kiss like real people do the idea that you're not a real person anymore but you can still love!!! You get it!!!!
9 - Shade of Yellow. Scott and Stiles song need I say more but ALSO Scott and Isaac song 💖💖
10 - Venus Fly Trap. I got the beauty got the brains, got the power, hold the reins, I should be motherfucking crazy! Lydia song of all time that's my GIRL
11 - Till Forever Falls Apart. Song about California let's goooo. This is a pack song - there is always the anxiety of losing each other! But the love was worth it!!!
12 - One Foot in Front of the Other. A 3b Scott song primarily though also applicable to Stiles. Things just take longer to heal these days but I'm coming for you! The idea of I'll be back soon I'll be there for you soon it's taking a minute but I'll be there!
13 - marjorie. There is a thing with Allison in season five I will not spoiler but yeah, but also this is about Stiles' mom.
14 - The Boys of Summer. What is a teen wolf playlist without a Stiles and Lydia song. My love for you will still live on after the boys of summer have gone. The thing about them is that Stiles starts with a kinda creepy crush but he inherently is not capable of being romantically creepy for long so it turns into something real and lasting unexpectedly and you're a little shaken by it you really are!
15 - Renegade. Remember Braeden? Slay woman saves Isaac gets scratched and apparently killed by the alpha pack? She comes back baby and spoilers this is about her and Derek also she is the love of my life.
16 - Strangler Fig. Song for the Argents. Gerard you will always be my biggest opp Allison you did so good getting out.
17 - Villains. You haven't met Theo yet, frankly season 5a (and 6b) are the weakest bits and he turns up in 5a but yeahhh this is for him, not my favourite man but worth sticking around for his arc and also 5b is so much better than 5a truly.
18 - Rose-coloured Boy. LYDIA AND SCOTT SONG I think Lydia is constantly taken aback by Scott I think she has quite a cynical worldview and then Scott breaks it constantly and she's left surprised. I want you to stop insisting that I'm not a lost cause!!! But he keeps insisting and that saves her perhaps!!!
19 - Neck of the Woods. YOU GET IT I'm finding the ghosts are just kids in pain most dear lyric of all time.
20 - long story short. Ok so the actual verses not exactly the vibe generally but long story short I survived! That's it baby! Also "I dropped my sword, threw it in the bushes and knocked on your door and now we live in peace but if someone comes for us this time I'm ready" inexplicably a Derek verse to me! The way he goes from fighting for power to fighting to protect! I'm so proud of that man.
21 - Home. Home IS wherever I'm with you!!! That's it!!! Man oh man you're my best friend I'll scream it to the nothingness! You defeat the void and the darkness with your FRIENDS!!!!
Love how many of these my description was Vibes but you GET IT I'm so glad you like the playlist.

Since yesterday we talked about my *favorite* story: I think what really confuses me about the NFCV fans who defend Hector's writing by praising his final action, letting Lenore go, as the rightful conclusion of his character arc... is that it only works if you completely memory hole S3.
Hector is introduced as someone who burned his own parents alive after a childhood of abuse, bitter enough to believe humanity needed to be culled. From this perspective, him learning to forgive Lenore, or at least granting her mercy and dignity, could be a good character development. But Hector through the show was not written to be bitter, vengeful and violent: that was Isaac.
Or alternatively, Hector's biggest flaw is that he needs to be loved, so much that his favorite spell is reanimating dead animals so that they could love him unconditionally. He forces those creatures to him. He keeps this behavior by clinging to Dracula, then Carmilla (he could have ran away, he chose to stay with her after Dracula's death), then Lenore (after Carmilla's death and Isaac making him live, Lenore became his only certainty in life). From this perspective, him not forcing Lenore to live an existence she didn't want to live, but accepting her decision, could be poignant. But Hector never actively sought anyone: he was swayed and lured in. Besides, his pets stopped being relevant after S2.
Hector's arc was one of passivity. You can't miss it: even Isaac points out that Hector lacked agency. Hector spent his entire arc being thrown around left and right, lied to, beaten, humiliated, dehumanized, and he simply... existed. He has no objective, he barely has any negative emotions. Hector in S3 was a blow up doll, and we audience were meant to laugh at his stupidity while jerking off over the submissive and breedable peggable guy being called "good boy". S4 pretends he grew, with his working behind the scenes to resurrect Dracula, but it's not enough, for all the reasons we know. That's why him letting Lenore go feels like the last spit in the face for him: not only Hector is the only character in the season who is left with a bittersweet ending at best, but... he didn't do anything to affirm himself. He didn't choose to leave Lenore: Lenore chose to leave him, and he simply nodded to that. He didn't talk to her about their problematic relationship, now that nothing was between them. He didn't take the chance to recognize his own self-worth in the same way Isaac did. We don't know what he plans to do with Isaac, we don't know if he plans to leave the castle at some point. The pattern of him going "sure why not" at everything thrown at him was not shaken.
(I don't need to tell you that as someone who loves the original Hector's story precisely for the way he seizes agency for himself, this pisses me off something fierce. More idealistic? Maybe, but also encouraging.)
I'll be honest: Hector as a character is so empty that I feel his fans simply project themselves into him, especially victims of abuse who see the way he crawled back to Lenore and think that it was an intentionally nuanced representation of the way abuse twists your mind and priorities. And if his story resonates with you, I can't take it away from you, but I can assure you that the guy who spent a whole episode writing his puppy fetish for no reason other than fanservice does not give a single shit about the realism of abuse, let alone the things he was accused of.
And I wonder if the same can be applied to other aspects of the show, like Trephacard's friendship that straight up doesn't exist on screen, or Isaac's "development" which might resonate with people similar to him. Just a lot of projecting and filling in the holes, of which the show has plenty because it would rather waste its time with pointless filibustering and people being mean and crass to each other or piss jokes.
This is gonna sound very cynical but the main reason for the show's success is, essentially, that it's superficially deep and insightful.
Superficial presentation can go a very, very long way in hiding very egregious writing flaws, stuff like great fight scenes, emotional music and dialogues that sounds very cool, philosophical and deep can easily convince people that what they're watching is far more than it really is. These are cases where, if you don't pay attention to the finer details, you would really be led to believe that it's exactly what the show is presenting itself as
As another example: Sonic fans, even after all of these years, still like to parade Mephiles around as the best written villain in the series, even though his plan makes less than zero sense. This is because he looks cool (?), has cool powers, has a cool voice and the game consistently presents him as a mastermind...so folks fall for it, it's all about the vibes and how they emotionally impact the viewers, who in turn don't tackle the material with actual critical thought. Some seem to do so, given the plethora of in-depth analysis of characters like Isaac, but, and I know this is really offensive of me to say, I think they are still being influenced by the emotional impact of the way the story likes to present itself, preventing them from truly being 100% objective
People see Hector's pseudo philosophical speech to Lenore, they see her killing herself with the beautiful cinematography and music, and they mistake it for actual art, because it makes them forget or reinterpret the likes of S3. The reason why so many undermine or even justify Lenore's treatment of Hector in S3 is not, I believe, out of genuine rape apologism, but rather becaus people have a subconscious need to have everything neatly fit into their view of events
The ending of S4 looks so beautiful and deep and meaningful, but their relationship in S3 is in direct contradiction of that, so instead of recognizing that they twist the facts in their own head in order for all of it to make sense, because if you admit the existence of S3 as it truly was to yourself, then S4 and it's "beautiful" emotional impact falls apart like a ton of bricks
This is sounding very arrogant if not downright misanthropic I know, as I'm essentially saying that people don't know how to consume the media they like and that they don't even truly know what it is that they like. I feel a bit ashamed in saying this because it's the type of reasoning that would anger me usually, especially if directed at me, so in a way I guess I'm being hypocritical...but I truly don't see any other way to explain this phenomenon
Isaac is, of course, another good example: it's "easy" for most people to forget his hypocrisy because the show puts such a laser focus on his "development" and emotions and philosophy etc. It's like dangling keys in front of a toddler in order to distract them from some other thing
Something like Other M could have had the same effect, but the difference I feel is that Other M is far more egregious in its superficial dialogue: Samus sounds boring and stupid even at a surface level, she can't fool the audience, and Adam's character doesn't feature nowhere close as many "distractions" from his shitty behavior, especially since the authorization mechanic is pervasive throughout the whole game, so people immediately see what a douchebag he is and how self contradicting the story is about him.

...y'know Isaac hammering on about how much of a changed man he is while ignoring all the people that he's killed to get there....kinda reminds me of Griffith
Except Griffith is explicitly presented as an unfeeling hypocrite and his Messiah complex is a part of his villainy
🙂
You know what? Griffith had the decency to feel sorry for the people who died for his dream, even if he (literally) used their corpses as a justification of why he couldn't give up and just had to accept the Godhand's deal. (this is not even taking into consideration that fate literally engineered the perfect way to bring him to the lowest point of his life physically and mentally)
He felt so bad for a dead boy that he prostituted himself to earn money so that no other boy would meet the same fate. This boy impacted him so much that he reappeared in the vision Ubik gave him. His entire philosophy that his soldiers are not his friends but mere pawns comes from the desire to emotionally distance himself from the pain that their deaths would cause him. Griffith used to care, in his own twisted way: it's after becoming Femto that he lost all empathy, to his rejoicing.
Isaac just killed people who in his mind "deserved it" and defiled their corpses to create demonic creatures (that is, when he didn't outright say "nah you can eat these fuckers, i'm just killing them because they were mean to me"), and then the most he did was to tell those largely mindless demons "oh you can choose to be more than tools <3 just like me <3 see I've been Enlightened <3" (because sure, FlysEyes can talk, and I could maybe make a case for Abel being sapient even if nonverbal, but the others? There is no indication they are even sentient). I'm meant to be touched that he took six weeks to bury the people he has carelessly killed in pursue of his goal, but it's clear that the only people in his mind are he, him, and himself. He's not leaving behind a city to be resettled because he feels sorry for his actions and wants to make up for it: it's because he, off-screen, has come to the conclusion that he enjoys the feeling of making positive changes to the world. Which sounds noble until you see him killing mercenaries in Styria, because they are in the way :)
I always loved his phrasing during that scene with FlysEyes: "And I would remind you that everyone here was a victim." Of what, Isaac, dear? Of whom? :) what's with NFCV characters and their alleged remorse being expressed in "mistakes were made" words?
also Griffith went through such a terrible hell that you almost feel bad for him by the time he crossed his moral even horizon (no such justification for what he did to Casca and Guts, though). Isaac just got all the happiness he wanted on a silver platter, which makes his supposed "arc" feel unearned and unfair. Griffith sacrificing his own band was a monstruous act, but at least he had to give up something!
#anti netflixvania#the more 'isaac is deeper than the mariana trenches' posts i read the more i enjoy dunking on this creator's pet <3

do you have any designs of what other tainted characters look like?
i saw your t.magdalene on twitter and ive seen t.bethany and i love them both so much
i guess im really interested on jacob and esau tainted designs lol
Okay so, while I do have some ideas on everyone's design, I haven't really tackled anyone yet aside from Judas, Magdalene and Bethany, mostly because I don't really know how to insert them in the story. Judas' tainting actually has a part in the story, and I think i drew him already a bunch of times. Apollyon also has a whole story arc about becoming tainted and making a huge mess! He's tied to Maggy's tainting too.
Eden also had some sort of tainting arc, but it involves them becoming human and being unable to change in any way, so it's more like a reverse-tainting. Eden's tainted form is very tied to the game mechanics, I haven't really thought about how that would translate in a more realistic setting.
Lazarus is already kind of tainted, but maybe I could use his undead design for a flashback.
And now for the more up in the air ones:
Isaac would have become beaten up during one of the apocalyptic arcs, and it was bc he was trying to protect Jacob and (dark) Esau from an angel or something, but then the story got shuffled around a little bit and while I still think it would be cool for it to happen, I don't really know when or how.
I had an idea for Cain that when his left eye got gouged and he became tainted he'll finally be able to grow old and die, but that was before I paired him up with Lilith, and now I don't want to leave Lilith alone :( and Lilith too, her tainting involved Satan trying to get her back but it quickly devolved into something way too dark that I didn't feel comfortable tackling, and honestly Satan doesn't really care about her all that much so it wouldn't really make much sense.
As for Samson and Eve, I think they might we might see their tainted version in some flashbacks! Specifically Samson's first life, when he met Eve for the first time ever. The story was pretty simple too, Samson would find Eve dishevelled and shunned by society, he would help her out, she would try to warn him about Delilah but he'd ignore her, and everybody knows how the story goes from there. I'd love to tackle some actual biblical stories sometimes lol.
Azazel is a bit of a sore spot because, with Judas's possession arc, it would make sense for him to become tainted but... I don't wanna T.T I like his design too much and I don't want to hurt my boy... I'll have to think about it.
Anyway Tl, dr: no I don't have many other tainted designs BUT in 2021 when this AU was still being thought about I did a quick Dark Esau character ref that apparently I never posted (because of spoilers I guess? I don't remember)

Goddddd this is old. Can't believe I never posted this lol. Also there's a mention of the Beast in the text but the Beast has since been erased lol. Need to find a place for her. I guess Esau's design would be pretty similar to this one, just more buff now lol. And I guess Jacob would look pretty much the same but more tired and bald and stressed... Once I'm done with the next comic I might try to give them a little refresh.
I hope this was interesting enough!

general thoughts
calling this episode baelor is kinda inspired actually.
SEAN BEAN EMMY CAMPAIGN WHEN???
if looks could kill, walder frey would have died when he threatened to turn them over to the lannisters omg there is pure hate in her eyes

the actor for aemon does a good job wjth this scene. the “even the little children” and the way his face shakes when he says “you will live with it the rest of your days…as i have” devastating thanks
sansa looks so relieved when ned starts to confess because she thinks this means he’ll be spared and sent to the wall and live. she has no idea what’s coming. then, arya looking around in horror that the entire crowd is yelling for her father's death, because she has no idea how little the common people care about this sort of shit. they want a show, that's all. what is that man's death to them. nothing.
the scenes with osha and bran are always so good. they have such a great dynamic, every word she speaks to him is so soft, almost reverent. not a kneeler but she adores this little boy and she’ll play along with his silly little ways and lug him around and calm his nightmares, and pray to the gods that he doesn't have the gifts she suspects he does because she knows better than anyone else at Winterfell that his gifts are a burden.
it's a shame that isaac got so big so fast because i deserved more scenes of osha just carrying bran around on her hip omg.
i love that this bard can’t help but put his whole heart into those high notes even knowing that joffrey is insane and unstable. i also love that joffrey makes a crack about ilyn payne’s tongue when ordering the bard's tongue taken out. demented little shithead.
and he IS just a little shithead at the end of the day because his face falls when sansa refuses to react, and he’s so mad when she's able to bite back at him. he doesn't get the reaction he wants, and he throws a tantrum at her as a result.
anyways I'M FINISHED WITH SEASON 1 BABEEEEE. took me long enough lol. i think it's a solid season of tv but it has the exact same faults as hotd frequently has which is making the "narrators" men, and especially kings way too goddamn often. renly's story arc should have been from loras' pov. the argument with robert about aerys should have been barristan's pov. they do a great job showing us sansa and arya's povs regularly, but you can see the cracks starting to show already because catelyn, tyrion, and dany are vastly different from the jump and they cut out all the prophecy/fever dream stuff except when they have to include it like bran's dreams or the dragons. it SUCKS. it's a FANTASY SHOW WHY WOULD YOU CUT ALL THE FANTASY ELEMENTS. STOP GIVING FANTASY SHOWS TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE FANTASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
changes i noticed
okay now we are getting into what i feel is the first purposeful change - shae. well i suppose renly counts here too? whatever. anyways. she’s clearly older, closer to peter’s age, she doesn’t play act at being a sweet naive girl in love; she’s unimpressed, snarky, sultry, clearly hiding something. she unsettles tyrion right away because she’s so hard for him to pin down but that’s why he’s interested in her, because he finds her fascinating, challenging. of course in the end, the parts of her that he finds most interesting are why this would never work - shae is not a woman who can hold her tongue when she doesn’t approve of something and that’s a deadly trait for a lowborn mistress to have, so they were always going to have to leave KL if they wanted to be together BUT tyrion can never leave these people, not really, and as it goes on, he just gets more and more dug in - he’s gonna die here on this continent involved in these people’s lives and there is nothing she can offer him to sway him from this path.
i think i understand wanting to have more uncomplicated romances in the series to appeal to a general audience, but i do think you have to come around to saying something similar with that romance. i think the problem here is that by itself, tyrion being unable to listen to the woman he loves pleading with him to just Leave before it’s too late, and then it’s too fucking late, it maybe gets tyrion to roughly the same point as him being purposefully obtuse to how unhappy and unsafe shae feels with him in the books, but the thing is. that’s not how it goes lmao so we have this great set up where tyrion and shae are more equal in their relationship but their relationship ending is ultimately completely tyrion's fault and shae is simply trying to exist in the world after the man she loves abandons her, except they put that stupid little knife in her hand and had her testify against sansa. i am already mad. alsjdfk.
WHATEVER, i think the actress who plays shae is really good. kind of similar to jacob anderson in that she's putting this whole story together out of nothing and doing a great job, and doesn't always get the recognition she deserves.
i think emilia and iain have unfortunatley great chemistry. when she cups his cheek and goes "is that what you think will happen" before she walks into the fire. it's really good and clearly romantic and i hate that they made this change to jorah. i can't even think of him as jorah most of the time.

Dislike:
Hate:
I honestly can’t hate anyone this season
Season rating: 9/10
Not my favourite season but actually a really solid ending to an amazing show. Some of it was dumb but a lot of it was awesome. I loved the musical episode and the finale! Tbh it should have ended here.

For the Character Bingo Game!! Please feel free to mix and match and disregard as you please:
Milligan, Isaac the Messenger, Susan Pevensie, and Toph Beifong
Hope you are having an amazing day, and that the Tasks go smoothly :)
Done! Sorry the highlights on this look so terrible, I'm bad at filling these out. But I very much appreciate the ask! 🥰🥰🥰
Milligan:
I don't know if Milligan and I would be friends irl (I suppose it depends if you're talking about my fic's version, canon, and whether he has memories or not), but assuming there's nothing crazy going on, then yeah, I could see us getting along. Not a big sports fan though. As you know from my fic, I have a lot of head canons, and rotating 24/7, and all MBS characters need therapy let's be real. They also all need more screen time, had wasted potential, and canon did them all dirty by cancelling the show, but I highlighted these for Milligan specifically because he never got closure and answers as to what Curtain did to him and why he was working there. As for my half filled in "my opinions are unpopular", that's mostly because of SOS: people either love it, or it's not for them. So I'm not sure what to call that. I relate to him (positive) because I head canon him as having ADHD (even though I have ADHD-I and I head canon him as having ADHD-HI, but close enough).
Isaac the Messenger:
I feel like Isaac and I would be friends irl since I have a lot of friends doing STEM things. All MBS characters go to therapy, and I clicked canon did him dirty and wasted potential because... did he just wait in the woods forever? I feel like they could have done something with that. I wasn't sure whether to click "needed more screen time" because I feel like it wouldn't be a lot more screen time, just enough to give a little closure on that. I say my opinions are unpopular because I haven't seen any other fics with him as a main or even major side character (if they exist lmk) and I half filled in "so many head canons" because...I do expand on his character a bit in SOS, but I don't know if I'd say I have a ton of head canons for him.
Susan Pevensie:
Ohhh....the problem of Susan. That's what all these highlights are based off of btw. I understand Lewis was using her to reflect his own issues, but why couldn't he have lived to write her story? The arrow over rotating is because when Narnia was my primary childhood hyperfixation, Susan's story was one I was really interested in. (Spoilers Ahead for The Last Battle). She has to live with all her friends and family dying, and figure out how to get back on the right path without them. I would have loved to read a story about Susan and her husband and kids where Susan tells them about her time in Narnia and her younger kids and her husband believe her, but other relatives think it's a manifestation of her grief, and even her older kids are like "mom, seriously?" but then either someone who used to live in Narnia but found a portal to our world or another world shows up, or Susan and her family get sucked through a portal to another world that still exists (not Narnia or Charn because those worlds were destroyed but maybe someplace else), and you could have them go on this whole new adventure and I would love to see that happen. However, I am worried about how people would handle the story, hence the half filled boxes for "the fandom is wrong" and "my opinions are unpopular", because I do see the occasional posts that are like "Lewis was just being sexist and hates Susan because she likes boys and lipstick" or "Lewis was 100% right about girls who like boys and lipstick being terrible" which...respectfully, no to both of these. If I remember correctly, Susan wasn't on the train and is still alive, she can have a redemption arc, and she was always described as pretty and liking stereotypical girly things, that itself was never the issue. The issue was her becoming materialistic and caring too much about what other's think of her and mocking her siblings for not acting otherwise. Look, I never related to Susan very much, and I'm not sure that I'd be friends with her irl, based on interests and personality, maybe not, but she's not a bad person just because she's stereotypically feminine and she's certainly not irredeemable. Would have loved to see a sequel where she goes on other adventures and shows off her awesome archery skills and we get to meet a bunch of new fun characters, but I'm so worried that someone who focuses on the wrong aspects of her character would try to make the message of her story about how Lewis was wrong about something he never said or about how Susan was terrible for something that was never a problem in the first place. Sorry to rant, but these are my thoughts.
Toph Beifong:
She's not the ATLA character I rotate the most, but I do love her. She's insane, but I love her. For this, I kept it ATLA (I know some people would put "wasted potential" or "canon did them dirty" for stuff that happens in Korra, but I'm gonna put that on hold for now). I would love to adopt child her because I have a younger sibling like her and as for the irl we'd be friends, that would 100% depend on whether Toph decided she liked me, and I have no control over that. She needs therapy, but so do all those war surviving children and she has never done anything wrong ever (was using her earth bending to scam people).

Since I have now taken some time to have some reasonable thoughts, here’s another post about the newest movie. Don’t expect this to be too cohesive, after all, I do remain a neurodivergent nightmare.
Anyway.
The more I think on it (and that has been A LOT today) the more I get the feeling that this might have originally been pitched as a Captain Hook focused feature rather than a Peter Pan remake.
seriously.
Jude law is good, but is he really ‘makes every other character feel like a side character’ good? Because that’s kind of how I felt watching it all. captain Hook and his arc DOMINATED the narrative, his presence was felt even in scenes he wasn’t in, and I don’t think that’s just my devotion to the sad pirate man speaking. He was also the only character that got any sort of real exploration into who he is as a person, every other character we see is just presented as a certain way and we’re expected to take it as is.
His character arc is front and centre whilst everyone else, including the titular characters are just kind of there to further push his narrative onwards. And that just really pings off the part of me that was involved in the film and TV industry. Like it just feels like something that was pitched as a Hook story, was probably developed at least somewhat to go in that direction and then was told to adapt that work into a Peter Pan retelling to fit what Disney was doing with the brand.
Of course I can’t say for certain cos I wasn’t in the board rooms, but it certainly piques my pattern recognition.
I’ve not been shy about how much I hate the costume, I still do. That hat and those epaulettes? Horrible, fortunately easy to ignore. Unfortunately will never compare to the 2003 movie costume.
which leads me into that comparison.
I will always love Jason Isaacs’ Hook, always.I always adored the character, but it was his portrayal that inspired me to start developing and writing my own Captain Hook. However... IDK Jude Law’s performance feels closer to what *my* Hook has become. I think that’s partly owing to him being that bit visually older, but there is more. Both 2003 and 2023 versions have a Hook that is an absolute wreck with melancholy and loneliness. But 2003′s melancholy is guided by anger and a deep need for revenge, where 2023′s is guided by like insecurity, uncertainty, and loss. All those traits are present in both, but they are separated by what’s at the centre of their sadness.
I can’t really compare backstory, because 2003 doesn’t really have one. Persoanlly, I’ve always liked the idea that James was just a well educated guy who fell into piracy and then into Neverland. I’m just a fan of having normal people being put into extraordinary circumstances and the ways they adapt to that. I have no string feeling either way to Hook having been the first lost boy, I know a lot of people love it and will be delighted to see that explored. I’ve read a few short stories about it, and honestly this movie handles it better than the published stories (IMO)
When it comes to my own Hook, I write him with a great attachment to his name. He, too, feels there’s a separation between ‘James’ and ‘Captain Hook’ but there’s some level of yearning to return to being James, the man he was. Seeing in the movie that visceral and opposite reaction was like WOW, I hadn’t ever considered that angle, but probably because I’ve never felt strongly about the first lost boy angle. But the pain there in that shot! Man’s own name is a wound that never healed and hearing it again, a knife cutting through it once more.
Final comparison Hook’s ‘death’ I really liked the way this movie handled it. It wasn’t played off as a joke, he was treated with the reverance and respect that he ought to have...unlike just about every other version. Now I hate to see him die as much as anyone. HOWEVER, IDK it felt a bit cheap for him to survive and then that smile at the end. It’s just like, the moments after his ‘death’ were so poignant and for that feeling to be for no reason actually. It emotional whiplashed me and not in a good way. I actually think the movie would have benefitted from the finality of death hanging over it, since one of the repeated messages throughout the narrative was the inherent nature of change and endings of phases in life...but perhaps that would be a tad too dark for Disney and their current branding.
anyways. those have been some thoughts. I’m sure I’ll have more at some point.

ok perhaps an unpopular opinion time:
i have strong feelings about colin and isaac as characters and how far they've come, even as side characters, from when they were introduced. and i don't think that everyone on this show should act perfectly all the time and never have conflict, in fact i think it's something that is actually making the show worse when they indulge too much in it.
but as much as i liked the final scene of the boys hanging and playing FIFA together and chatting (big props to kola and billy, very charming) colin says before it he didn't last even a month, which would imply it's been nearly a month since isaac found out
for me it's frustrating that this ends up being focussed on how isaac feels about it - he's allowed to have a bad reaction, and even allowed to be hurt he wasn't told, but freezing colin out for a month? making his best friend think he's homophobic, that he hates him? that's shitty behaviour that goes beyond "needed a moment"
and i wish that colin had been able to push back a little like, i get you were hurt that i didn't tell you, but it also wasn't about you actually and what's more you really put me through it this month thinking my worst fears were coming true. AND THEN attacking a man for calling you the f-slur, which maybe you did for me, but kind of feels like you did it for you and your issues with it when you've been making me feel shit for a month about it.
why did the person in the minority (in this case, queer) have to, again, make the person in the majority, who was absolutely in the wrong, feel better by explaining why they did what they needed to do - especially given that they clearly weren't wrong to be apprehensive given the month-long tantrum their majority friend threw about not knowing about it?
(not to mention last week this man was evolved enough to have a conversation about deleting nudes from girls and revenge porn, but he didn't think about how freezing out colin for a month after finding out something (by force! not even by colin's intention!) like this might seem scary and homophobic??)
this is really not anti-isaac because i love him, it's more disappointment over the writing choices between the both of them, which evermore seem to service the Plot of the Week, and less the established character development, dynamics and seasonal arcs

for the ask meme: yuri >:]
Hehe the lil purple devil. lesgoo
Why I like them/why I don’t: FUN FACT before i started arc v and really was only into DM he's the one that catched my eyes (aaaand a few Things from zexal but that's another story). I thought heyyy lil dangerous teen with certainly some sadness to it sounds interesting. but then sora hit me like a truck and i haven't recovered and by the time yuri came up i was like sorry... sorry my heart is already fully owned by another war crimer. But I still love him, i think he's kind of a nice touch in Arc V to have One Guy that is just danger and mean.
What I like about their appearance: I really love the designs of every fusion dimension character I love how it integrate venitian/kind of industrial revolution-y theme. They really picked ancient gears and that judai was last seen in Venice and turned into a whole beautiful and horrible fascist aesthetic (actually it's funny it's italy) with masquerades and all. Yuri fits in sooo nice and also his colors are so bright he's really looking like a poisonous creature.
Do I prefer their dub names or original names? So once i am stuck with a name i can't let it go and i started using Yuri and I doubt it'll ever leave me but also. Joeri is such a nice spelling. I love that every yu boy get an alternate spelling that doesnt use yu and reflects where they come from (joeri feels very old european, hugo more modern and low-class, ute a bit whimsycal..).
OTP: yeah i saw Yuri and Dennis talk once and it stuck with me. Might be my favorite romantic-ish pairing in Arc V? I just love when a dangerous character who spent their whole life thinking only about themselves and not caring for other people's feeling getting stuck with a mean crush on another character who has SO SO SO MANY ISSUES and also will NOT talk about it. Learn to be nice or lose the one person you ever loved ig. Also their colors are so nice.
NOTP: So listen i rarely strongly dislike common ship but sereyuri is one of those. Not for what it is or whatever just that it is treated as practically canon and an obvious default ship for them to have and I don't really want to be reminded how if a boy and a girl are connected no matter how little they care about each other they still SHOULD have some romance between them. if it was the rarepair it's supposed to be i probably would be fine with it.
OT3: Actually no the terminology here isn't going to make me only talk about romantic ships. Listen. Yu-boys siblinghood is SO fun. Arc v manga ending this and that idc it's the last 2 page you can ignore them. Then you have the absolute beauty and passion of the yu-boys being brother (and also Isaac. Love you isaac.)
Favourite card they use: THIS GUY

The story is that, when I was in high school and starting to buy cards and watching Arc V and everything, one time I was in Paris with my mother and managed to ask her to get me V-jump issue at the japanese book store. It was one of the first time I asked to get things ygo-related and could have something special like that. And this was the promo card featured in it. Also I started playing a frightfur deck and it fit perfectly. So like this card is very precious to me for that reason ♥
Favourite moment they were in: I don't remember Arc V in real detail and should probably fix that but like... every silly face he does. Like the cat-like expression. I still remember collecting them because they were just so fun and cute.
Least favourite moment: Him smiling nicely at Serena at the end. I know it's supposed to be the reunions of the boys and the girls but they don't know each other they don't appreciate each other while would he suddenly go :) yay selena.
#arc v#ask meme#i love this series so much still it brings so much memories.....#the reason i got in there

i really want to add one thing that im so glad that the makers of the sex education didn't make the secondary romantic characters to the main cast to be complete assholes or bad guys for making the primary romantic characters to stand out more. while we're who's gonna end up with whom at the season finale, i really want to praise the characters of isaac, ruby & rahim to be such unique characters that made me so emotionally connected to them.
1. Ruby
so ruby williams, at first to most people like me, she definitely rubbed off as haughty & a spoiled brat who bullied people & never cared enough for anybody who isn't ready to take her orders. then by the end of s2 we discover she & otis have sex 'accidentally' & that leads to their 'casual relationship' in s3. but im literally shocked at how layered her character was. the makers really chose to save the best for later, she turns out to be a sensitive girl, a caring daughter and a really romantic person who hid all her good qualities with a bitchy-regina-george type attitude, when she is infact far from that. she did deserve better, but not as in otis-saying-i-love-you-back type better because otis actually never loved her. if otis had lied to her just to have sex with her, it would've been cruel & unkind to someone as honest as ruby. otis indeed did the right thing by telling her the truth. ofc it was hurtful but it was the right thing to do. i hope she finds someone who actually deserves her love in the later seasons.
2. Isaac

well well, what do we say about this character.? im completely gine for him. when i watched s2 i never actually thought id be writing something nice about him, who tried to have maeve by unfair means. who would've thought isaac would be this precious & this kind! he knows maeve inside out, he knows her favourite breakfast, he draws her face using his mouth & captures the exact look on her face, he cares about her & her family, he is like a best friend, a brother & a lover all wrapped in one for maeve. he is one of the most charming characters on the show ever, & i cant help shipping him with maeve even though i shipped otis & maeve for the past 2 seasons like crazy
bonus...
Adam
okay so i didn't mean to include him in this but how can i talk about sex education without talking about one of my most fave characters 😭😭😭😭 tbh, Adam's character had the greatest arc on the show. the character development from s1 to s3 was phenomenal & i can't help praising adam like my life depends on it! first we see an immature, big-dick-flaunting asshole & a bully in s1 who by the end discovers that he was confused about his sexuality. then he struggles with the confusion & his communication skills with his parents & friends throughout s2 & by the end he accepts the fact that he wasn't straight. then he goes on dating this guy he had a crush on since s1 but he also struggles to show his true feelings, but still tries to overcome his insecurities for his boyfriend. he educates himself, he accepts himself, he tries to be as good as he could...but he still struggles because if emotional negligence. ofc by the end what happens to him is...😔😔😔 but im so proud if my boy adam & my love for him has increased 10 fold! he's still a vulnerable baby in his heart who needs more care, love & attention. someone protect him pleaseeeee 🥺🥺🥺

For the character ship game: Trevor or Simon - mainline or LoS for either of them, whatever you prefer
I'm more comfortable with mainline :P
Trevor/Sypha: 10/10. The OG battle couple! Trevor's whip and Sypha's magic are so cool together. There is also something wholesome in how Sypha is hiding her true self in fear, but Trevor is so kind and friendly that at the end of the adventure she feels comfortable in trusting him with her secret :)
Trevor/Alucard: 9/10. I really like them as a brOTP :3 again, Trevor is the friend of all time and doesn't see Alucard as Dracula's son, but as a dear companion. I love that scene in GoS where the two fall all over themselves showering each other with praise <3
Trevor/Grant: 8/10. they're besties in crime. They're having the time of their life together. Another great if underrated brOTP.
Trevor/Hector: 9/10. You know the drill, Trevor has too much fun whipping the pretty boy and there is an interesting defrosting ice king arc going on here :P I like to imagine Trevor teasing Hector because his efforts to keep his composure are too amusing, but also because the poor man just needs a friend already.
Trevor/Isaac: here
Trevor/Dracula: 7/10. And so... they were both doms 😏 Aside from the jokes of Trevor attempting to subdue Dracula with his slutty boots, I got nothing about this one lol
mhhh I'm not sure of how many ships with Simon there are?
Simon/Selena: 10/10. Honestly I've only seen @simonsquest shipping them. It's his thing lol. I cannot divorce them from his fic and art, and man does he do a great job at portraying them as the sweetest, gentlest couple :3 oh you know Simon would be the most loving wifeguy <3
Simon/Dracula: 6/10. Yeah, it exist. Unless one imagines Dracula as being uniquely impressed by Simon's brutality, I don't really see the appeal.
BONUS: Simon/Isaac: 7/10. It only exists in one fic that I found, but the idea that Simon would look at Isaac and go "he's a redhead in BDSM getup just like me fr fr <3" is too hysterical not to share hdjhfdjkshfkdsj but eh, other than that, doesn't do anything Isaavor doesn't do already.

Scott
thank u!! <333
1.Whether I like or dislike their character
i love scott mccall more than any character from any form of media i have ever consumed. when i was 15 my family gave me teen wolf and scott mccall themed gifts and my love for him has only got stronger over the years <3 anyway enough about me. i’ve seen some people say scott being poc shouldn’t matter (esp to justify hating his character) but it does. he is from a single parent home with a mother who is a nurse and he is so committed to doing good and saving lives. here’s this teenage boy who starts the semester just wanting to make first line, to mean something, to be good at something. and he’s bitten and now he’s cursed, this isn’t what he wanted. and then suddenly someone’s trying to kill him and kill people he cares about and he has to choose every single time to do something about it. but he’s still a teenage boy and he wants to be normal and he wants to be in love and he wants to play lacrosse but things keep happening and he has to keep choosing. so scott mccall chooses, every single time, to save others. to ensure no one gets hurt if he can help it. he loves his friends and he’s also hilarious??? he makes mistakes just like anyone and everyone else in the show but that doesn’t detract from his character, it only makes it that much more compelling. i always have words for the writers of this show (🔪) and their treatment of scott and his development but at the end of the day, scott mccall is an excellent poc character and i am so grateful i started watching teen wolf so i can continue to appreciate that
2. who I ship them with
kira! scira is my teen wolf otp.
boyd! because they had so much potential and we deserved more!! boyd was robbed of his defection arc and scott deserved to hold hands with him.
allison! but in a this love was not meant to last and that’s okay kind of way
isaac! i mean who doesn’t?
3. What my favorite scene or scenes of them were
my mom does all the grocery shopping. iconic. legendaric. cannot be topped i’m sorry.
but also that ‘i want a semi-freakin normal life’ scene ✨ because #felt
and of course this scene that gave me goosebumps the first time and continues to every singleeee time: ‘what did you think we were gonna do, run?’
4. my favorite season of them(If they’re in multiple)
season 1!! if you pay attention to scott in season 1 literally everything in every other season after makes complete sense! his worldview isn’t static of course, but the foundation is pretty solid from season 1 and i love noticing how much things change and stay the same for him throughout the show.
thank you!!!!

Timothée Chalamet On Dune: ‘I Felt A Deep Desire To Be Involved’
By Helen O'Hara (x)
While Dune takes audiences into an epic, sprawling universe of spice, sandworms, war and weirdness, at the centre of it all is Paul Atreides – the son of Oscar Isaac__’s Duke Leto and Rebecca Ferguson__’s Lady Jessica, heir to a galactic dynasty, whose mysterious dreams are drawing him towards a destiny on the desert planet of Arrakis. Taking the role in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation is Timothée Chalamet, in his first major blockbuster – stepping up from arresting turns in low-key dramas like Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name for an ambitious science-fiction story on a mind-boggling scale.
With Dune premiering at Venice in a matter of days, read Empire’s interview with Chalamet – talking his take on Paul Atreides, his love of Denis Villeneuve, the epic desert shoot, and why he wants to work with Christopher Nolan for a second time.
You were the first one cast in the film. How did it happen?
Well, I knew just from the film blogs that Denis had been working on it. I’d already done a good bit of research on the history of the project. I’m not alluding to Jodorowsky’s or David Lynch’s version, more around [production company] Legendary picking up the rights ten years ago. When I was fortunate enough to go to many of the awards-related events, I got to meet Denis a couple of times, and already had it in my head… You know, I was feeling a deep desire to be involved. Then when he was on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival, he asked me to fly out there to meet with him about it. I had read two or three chapters of Dune, and then in preparation for the meeting busted out the rest of the book.

Did playing Hal [Henry V] in David Michôd’s **The King** prepare you for playing Paul?
Yes and no. Hal was a bit of a philanderer, they call him “the whoring fool” and he’s lived a life of immorality around the central Christian moral doctrine of the times. That’s the beginning of his arc. Paul is not starting from an amoral place. He’s starting 15, 16 years old, and he’s not totally naive or innocent. He is very much a boy, but by the end of the movie… there’s the coming of age into adulthood alongside a greater purpose.
The scale of this film is huge. How did it feel as a contrast to what you’ve done before?
I was fortunate enough to work on small-budget, independent films around the world, whether it was Call Me By Your Name or Miss Stevens or Lady Bird, or Beautiful Boy, all these movies that were under $20 million or something. I wouldn’t do it any differently because coming from a drama high school too was the perfect notch-up. It made sense. To be brave enough to learn from one’s own experience. There was a step up that felt healthy about that. Denis Villeneuve has a very earthy, energy-based, moment-to-moment way of being inspired, but also in abandoning ideas he might have had 24 hours ago. It’s inspiring. I had a small part in Interstellar as the teenaged version of Casey Affleck’s Tom] and I loved working on that too. I would love to work with [Christopher Nolan again. These are both directors that make amazing, huge movies.
What was shooting in the desert like?
A gift! The nature of these big-budget movies is to get good at reacting to a green-screen that’s showing the audience that a mountain exploded 200 feet in the distance. I wouldn’t know how to train for that. And the suit didn’t feel silly. You hear some actors in superhero films say that as each part of the superhero costume is added, some part of their dignity has slipped away. There wasn’t any of that.

It’s an incredible ensemble cast. Did you feel intimidated?
From a young actor’s perspective, you learn a new set of skills in any movie. I’m only six years away from drama high school. At 23 or 24 you’re learning every day. I was lucky not knowing any of the actors prior, really. There was this unifying ulterior motive to make the movie great. It felt good. Things have to be utilitarian. It’s the healthiest way to approach art and creativity, you know. No ego.
