things i love about heartstopper 21/?

Elle and Tao’s relationship is so lovely. The way Elle is clear from jump that she loves Tao just as he is, messy and loud and A Lot. Not just that, but she doesn't want him to change, it upsets her when he tries. The way she kisses him for the first time when he’s insulting a popular movie because she just loves him so much. The way she calls him a weirdo in that fond voice.

The way Tao is just so (rightly) in awe of Elle’s strength and talent and creativity and grace and intelligence. The way he learns from her and respects her. The way he overcomes his deep, deep insecurities and fears to support her dreams because he knows she deserves the world. "Please don't base your decisions on how I feel." This is really important. And yes, he keeps making it difficult for her around these things, and with someone less determined to follow her own path, that might have been a problem. He takes a long time to learn this lesson, but he keeps working on it. When Elle says she wants to study overseas, he's fully supportive because he knows, as he knew when he said it in the Musée de Montmartre, that it's where she's supposed to be.

And the way they match each other’s energy is so beautiful. The way they dance together and encourage each other and tease each other, the way Tao can just randomly yell because of the colour of a painting and Elle is just “guess I’m in love with him, what can you do”, ugh I love their love.

I have the urge to restart Heartstopper... again!! Why can't I stop? What is with this obsession?

okay so i'm not trying to make this a ~thing~ or a hot take or whatever, but can we talk about how all the hyped up queer shows still predominantly feature mlm couples? i'm not saying there aren't wlw shows/movies or the mlm-focused shows don't also feature wlw characters/couples, just... they either get nowhere near the same amount of hype, have some other main plot, end with at least one of them dying or experiencing something traumatic, get cancelled after one season in the middle of their arc, or they're not the main couple. And that's not to discount the representation you can get from secondary characters of course but just... ugh I want a heartstopper or rwrb or young royals or skam or love, simon or i don't even know... with girls. And I know I'm not the first person to bring this up and I know it's not that simple, but seeing all the hype for heartstopper and rwrb this week makes my heart ache a little bit so i needed to say this somewhere.

things i love about heartstopper 19/?

The camera work. I'm not a filmmaker so I'm gonna use the wrong terms to describe this, but I still really love how they did this. That intimate hand-held style, with the constant movement in each shot, is such a perfect choice for this story. The way the movement of the camera shifts depending on the scene - the rapid, large movement when Charlie's rushing to form in 'Bully' compared to much smoother movement when Charlie first sees Nick in 'Meet', for example. But even in very still, quiet moments, there's always a little bit of movement, which makes you feel more "there".

The movement is something you don't really notice as a viewer (well, that could just be me, I was on my third watch before I consciously paid attention to it), but without you even realising, it tells you what you should feel about this scene, tells you how you would be moving/seeing if you were in that room with the characters.

The style means some parts of shots are a little wonky sometimes, but somehow never in a way that's distracting or uncomfortable (I'm sure we can all think of films that used handheld footage that were basically unwatchable without seasickness medication). These camera people were so good at their jobs!! (And everyone else involved with making this happen, obviously.)

The more omnipotent view that comes with still and stable shots or smooth movement using tracks or whatever just wouldn't have the same effect (I mean, they might have used these but still made sure the movement read as handheld, I dunno). The handheld style brings the viewer right into the story, we're living it with all of them and I love it.

This show has truly had a remarkable effect on me.

The Osemaverse and all the characters that reside inside it are brilliant. I really hope that we get to see your other amazing creations get brought to life. Radio Silence, Solitaire, Loveless and I Was Born For This will all be great.
