I've been thinking about why I'm suddenly so drawn into this specific dynamic with Mulder and Krycek in The X Files, and I keep coming back to this post and the idea of luck/fate vs. choice.

Regarding Krycek:

The frustrating thing about Mulder (semi-affectionate) is he thinks he deserves what he gets, or that he is making a choice to be who he is.

And over and over, something bad almost happens to Mulder, and actually happens to Krycek, without them making substantively different choices.

Exhibit A: shooting an innocent* man in Sleepless

Mulder 'sees' Cole with a gun in the train station. He pulls out his service weapon, points it, it seems like sheer luck that he doesn't actually shoot. He perceives that he is shot, collapses, but for some reason unlike anyone else in the case he DOESN'T DIE he just gets up and walks away. Krycek sees Cole with a gun and actually shoots. To save a fellow officer. (Who ISN'T really even a fellow officer, of course. It would be so easy for him to let Mulder die here, from his point of view, but he DOESN'T.) *ok it comes to my attention that Cole is in no way innocent, but YKWIM

Exhibit B: the black oil

Ok this one is a bit more complicated, Mulder has a bad time too obviously. They both end up with the black oil in them at some point, but Krycek gets full fucking possessed and then left for dead in a missile silo. Mulder is exposed to the less powerful/not seemingly sentient version from the Tunguska event. Absolutely awful experience, but he's back to himself in a few hours, apparently because they gave him the successful vaccine (so he got vaccinated out of it!) (yes, there are complications later on. I'd still take his version over Krycek's a million times.)

Exhibit C: the fucking arm thing

So after escaping the prison camp, Mulder and Krycek both come across locals. Mulder is given tea and taken care of. Cutting his arm off is suggested. We don't even know how he talks them out of it! But the next we see, he's making a triumphant return, all in one piece. Krycek....

In conclusion: life as a narrative foil BLOWS y'all Bonus - both have Weird Daddy Dynamics with the Smoking Man, but Smoking Man absolutely will not kill Mulder (who hates him and works against him) and is totally willing to dispose of Krycek (pretty ok henchman all things considered) as soon as it is even a little convenient, basically just to clean up.

What’s up with how the dunmeshi fandom just lies about this kind of stuff all the time. It is easily confirmable information that it was a monthly series, something incredibly common in the industry.

A not weekly magazine schedule is literally common !! Especially in the seinen shoujo and josei demographics, sometimes monthly, sometimes biweekly, sometimes every two months, sometimes seasonal! Please stop lying about how Dunmeshi was some special unique creation that defies all standards of manga just to hype it up because it is so clear that every single one of these comparisons is centered around Weekly Shonen Jump (and understand that SJ has many magazines under its brand that are monthly or semimonthly). Not everything is WSJ and it needs to stop being the only point of reference in conversations like this 🤧

my lover and i dance to old music in a tiny kitchen. we judge new music together and take food critique very seriously. we watch love is blind before we fall asleep and agree that if they had a queer season, it would be bloody but also make for excellent tv. of fucking course queer people would know someone for only 2 weeks and agree to get married. what are you saying.

at a bar with friends, a man puts his hand on my wrist. got a boyfriend? and yes, i do have a boyfriend, she's amazing. i am texting her while i wander around a gas station named after geese. i am visiting a swing state for a wedding. in the candy aisle i overhear: she's actually like a lesbian it's disgusting. two teenage girls with packaged sandwiches in their hands, giggling. no literally, like. i'm not, like. okay with her being there while we're all, like, naked and changing.

my girlfriend and i tailgate, drink gin and cider out of cups. from the frat group beside us, a man corrects himself with one of his friends: bro, i mean, nonbinary entity, and it makes everyone around him laugh, myself included. he razzes his friend the same way i would have killed for at 19 years old - like nothing happened, he continues: you apply sunscreen like an alien. he does a little sassy (and fairly accurate) dance interpretation of the motion. his friend is laughing so hard they're crying.

i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.
