So I keep seeing discussions floating around about like "why aren't any of these people married" and "are JC's standards too high?" and other assorted nonsense, so I have decided to put together a ranking of like "if a practical minded historical* woman wanted to get ahead politically with the LEAST amount of #suffering, what rankings would she give these guys." Because I've been really fond of @dangermousie's poll options, I'm calling this girl Potato.

*Historical fantasy more or less given that we assume that Potato is also a cultivator.

Jiang Cheng There are many reasons for this but 1) Jiang Cheng's in-laws consist entirely of (1) bratty nephew who doesn't even live at his house full time, 2) there are no other meddling in laws or sect elders given that Jiang Cheng is the only one! 3) he is reasonably good looking, well off, and has social status by this point in the story. Potato can probably win over a bratty nephew! Downsides include: if Potato doesn't like spicy foods oh dear, but honestly we don't know what Potato's spice tolerance is so it could still work out!

Nie Huaisang: Being married to NHS would be an exercise in perpetual embarrassment, and it's unclear if his budget line items ever since Da-ge died are any more detailed than "Summertime Sadness." There are worse people to marry, but why anyone (including Potato) would willingly choose to marry NHS for political benefit eludes me. He is ranked higher on this list than any Lan largely for the sake of "his mom was probably not in solitary confinement" and "there are likely no dietary restrictions present in his house." but the other downsides include "he's probably going to go INSANE" at some point but silver lining on that front is that he's really not a very good cultivator, so it probably won't be as bad as NMJ's insanity bender? Potato could rank him lower than any Lan options tbh.

Lan Xichen There are also many reasons why Mr. Zewu-jun is not an ideal marriage candidate for practical reasons but this largely has to do with his family. There's 33 favorite grandpas who seem to have opinions on the regular. The in-law trouble would suck tremendously. There's 5am wakeup calls and 9pm bedtimes and no meat or alcohol. There's like between 3000-4000 rules Potato will have to remember and actually follow! His mom spent her entire married life mysteriously in solitary confinement. #Yikes!

This seems like an unwise place to marry into. Potato could do better.

Lan Wangji See above except for the part where he doesn't even like Potato and only thinks about WWX all day.

Lan Qiren I am uncertain about Potato's investment in #HotDilfsInLocalArea but 3000-4000 rules and many of Zewu-jun's problems.

Jin Guangyao He's already married and he's never cheating on his incest marriage, and he has his ex's head in his bedroom closet. Also #Yikes. Potato could do better than this too.

Basically: Potato should either aim to marry Jiang Cheng or go to live as a hermit in the woods.

thinking about a canon div au where lwj goes to yunmeng jiang the summer after gusu lectures, walks in just in time to see a sweaty half-naked wwx, his dirtied training robe left hanging around his waist where it's tucked into his trousers and belt, tousling with equally sweaty and dirty junior disciples (only a handful of them are in equal states of undress).

wwx spots him half a minute later, right after demonstrating the proper archery stance to another disciple. the moment he does, he blinks, then brightens, dropping the bow to make his way towards lwj.

all six feet (how is he suddenly so tall?!) of him, sunkissed skin, toned chest and stomach bare and gleaming with sweat.

lwj can hardly breathe. his right hand is a tight fist behind his back. he imagines his frayed tether to his sanity in his desperate grip.

wwx is in his usual teasing lwj mode, especially now that he's a solid 2 inches taller than lwj (for at least the summer), back turned to his silly shidis shooting kites, revelling in lwj's attention—

his hand moves before he can think, snatching the arrow in midair an arm's length from them.

lwj had been so preoccupied he hadn't even noticed it before wwx had suddenly turned and seemingly plucked it out of thin air.

wwx clicks his tongue. "watch it, guys; i can't have lan zhan thinking i'm a crappy teacher!" he chucks the arrow as though it were a spear, where it lands dead center at a target.

lwj desperately recites the gusu lan precepts about restraint and proper conduct in his head. mostly, he would like to – needs to – lie down.

"but you are a crappy teacher!" one of the disciples retorted. "you all but left us for dead the moment you saw some handsome gongzi!"

"what, am i supposed to choose you stinky lot over a handsome er-gege?!" wwx snorts then turns back to lwj with a grin.

"sorry about that, lan zhan! these guys still only hit about half the kites—oh? do my eyes deceive me?" wwx leans closer, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"my poor dear lan-er-gege, has the yunmeng sun already given you sunburn? your ears are as red as my hair ribbon!" wwx cackles, then grasps his sleeve, tugging him towards the pavilions. lwj swallows, wanting to collapse right there and then if that wouldn't only add to his mortification. he eyes the lakes. maybe if he could just stay there the entire summer...

I don’t know your opinion on bottom lwj (maybe you like it or have no problem with it) I personally hate it with a burning passion, not even from fetishized point of view. But because it literally goes against how the character is in canon. Regardless, I usually just block that tag in ao3, but now i come back to tumblr after not logging in like almost a year and one of the first things i see is a freaking fan art of JC supposedly doing LWJ (is not shown explicitly) and WWX looking and being supportive and i just wanted to throw up. So firstly, before I tell you my opinion - I actually know the image you are referring to and I did the exact same thing when the post assaulted my eyes. I mean, everyone has their ships but come on! WX and JC?! No thanks.

As for your question, I have no majorly strong opinion on bottomji. I have read a few fanfics that have worked out alright. Mostly YLLZ era WWX meets extremely horny and willing 'self-sacrificing' virgin LWJ 'taking one for the team' - which were quite funny. But overall I do find it a little strange, because by making LWJ 'bottomji' people tend to make WX somewhat out of character one way or the other.

The reason I do not have a particularly strong opinion on LWJ being the bottom, is because it's kind of implied in the extras that they may well have done such things during their very active and passionate sex life already.

To me, the above certainly implies they've done a lot more than we have witnessed and switching would certainly come into that.

Also, I actually think LWJ would do anything for WWX, if he should ask. Including switching things up every now and then if his dear husband wished.

Overall, I don't think LWJ switching positions on occasion is necessarily out of character, if done properly and the fanfic authors stay true to how the characters actually are and would react during such acts. For example, LWJ still being the more dominant one out of the pair. Just because he's bottoming doesn't mean he's suddenly going to be submissive.

That being said, the image you and I saw is of course just completely out of character! JC is homophobic for a start! It just wouldn't happen. Ever. Even if JC was interested in some strange alternative universe. WX just wouldn't! I'm also convinced that WX would not want to, nor be willing to engage in sex with anyone else, even a threesome or some voyeuristic partner swap - or whatever the hell that image was?!

Wangxian are too wrapped up in each other, too completely obsessed with each other for anything else. Not to mention LWJ would drink so much vinegar he would pickle! And I don't think WWX would fare much better, LWJ is his and I don't think he'd be willing to share either!

I can understand why you might find it a bit odd seeing the roles switched around, but I do think it's something that could possibly be an occasional occurrence in canon because of the lines I mentioned above. Though I do love their dynamic in the novel and that is definitely what I prefer. Overall, we all have different preferences and opinions I guess ☺️

Finally, my dear anon...please go and read your favourite fanfic or browse through some gorgeous Wangxian art to cleanse yourself of the image which assaulted your senses. It's what I did and I feel much better now lol!

Here’s my review of chapt. 15 of losing hope!!! I’m sorry it’s so late! Slide has kinda been kicking my ass lately tho your stories do make it significantly better (probably gonna do a reread soon) ANYHOW, on with my thoughts

Wwx and LQR’s interactions are so painfully awkward but that’s kinda what makes it adorable. LQR being like “he’s clearly hurt and has been through some shit. I should help” meanwhile Wwx is like “he hates me and I shouldn’t do anything to piss him off” and then they get started bonding over music and get significantly more comfortable and FOUR YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I WAS SCREAMING OF HAPPINESS!! Legitimately I was a little scared someone would ask what was going on because how do I explain that I’m making noises like I’m dying because of two fictional characters in my friend’s fic that are bonding?? Especially with the confusion on WWX’s part. Ugh it’s so bittersweet and I love reading every second of it.

Wwx talking to LQR about more serious things and reflecting on how things went when he was a kid. Also LQR pointing out that all WWX wanted was to be seen and then Wwx being like ‘how did you know that?? You’re not wrong but…’ . UGH, HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD AT WRITING THIS???

Wwx getting the approval of LQR was not on my bingo card but I will 100% take it and enjoy every second of it. I really enjoy fics where LQR realizes he kinda fucked up all those years ago and makes an effort to make it up to WWX and LWJ in his own way and your fic has done that spectacularly. Especially with talking abt baby LWJ because dear LORD, THAT SOUNDS ADORABLE.

I can completely relate and I'm just glad to see you in my inbox - I mean, it would be hypocritical of me to be upset because this has been sat in my inbox for a little itty bit as well. ANYWHOSLES, I'm literally so giggly because I can make Lan Qiren feel remorse for what happened and NOBODY CAN STOP ME. It would make sense to me that they'd bond over music because Wei Wuxian had to use it to survive and loves it, and Lan Qiren should be a big fan of it because he's proud of the Lan Clan. Meaning he's proud of their musical cultivation, so of course he has an ear for music! Even if he wants to pretend it's all for cultivation, he loves it really. So they get to bond over it!! You know I have to slide in little bits of angst and you KNOW I love making him be called out over things he knows are true like '😧 what do you MEAN you can be remorseful and understand my point of view??!!?' He's not used to that stuff, it's scary. Lan Qiren, on the other hand, can be introspective over the years - he thinks about it idly because Wei Wuxian (to his knowledge) is dead, so there is naught that can be done no matter what he finds out. Until there is. I'm coming at it from the idea of a sympathetic Lan Qiren that didn't learn about Lan Wangji's crush through Lan Wangji actively defying him and squaring up against his own clan to defend a violent, abhorrent demonic cultivator that has just murdered people in grief-stricken fury. I dunno about you, but I do genuinely think it would help the situation because of previously mentioned points. Now he's just exasperated and determined to embarrass Lan Wangji as payback for walking in on them making out. Subian and Wei Wuxian's relationship will literally never not mean everything to me and them reuniting is also everything to me. They deserve it, goddamn it. I'm glad you liked the interlude, I myself was wondering what was going on with them and so decided to write about it - yes, of course Hua Cheng is being a little shit, like "resentful energy? Could not be me." Fun fact, Lan Sizhui playing Inquiry is actually why Hua Cheng wandered into the shrine (he was supposed to be shopping for more gifts for gege, and heard the call). How will Jin Ling deal with Jiujiu showing up? Will Jiang Cheng actually pop a blood vessel out of rage? How will Wei Wuxian deal with training with a sword for the first time in years upon years? What if on some random night hunt, both wwx and jc get deaged to somewhere probably around the CR studies.

It is seriously troubling for everyone, especially the boy who still have their adult bodies. jc can tell this core isn't his. It being stronger was indeed a bit worrying when he wasn't explained what happened, but he somehow also could tell it /wasn't his/.

wwx on the other side saw his reflection in sandu and was shocked when he couldn't recognise himself but also felt much weaker than what he remembered "of the day before".

It takes a lot of calming down from the juniors and attempts at explaining who they are today (leaving the trauma on the side for now).

The thing is, they are still in the middle of solving some problems and the two "young" cultivators are more than happy to help despite being so troubled ("I trust we can fix it later" wwx said as jc rolled his eyes at his lack of care).

And this is how the juniors see for the first time what the duo was like before everything was shattered. They are so close to one another, fighting rather well despite the balance now being messed up (they somehow still manage to balance it well enough).

Back to the inn, everyone is surprised by how jc acts (even jl, who has only known jiujiu post-I-lost-everything-but-you). This is such a contrast from the fierce and severs looking sect leader they know (even tho the quartet has learned to know he can be nice and loving too).

wwx isn't 100% out of character, although he might be a bit less drunk than usual and a whole lot flirty with jc (which does make the juniors a bit unsure of what is happening.) of course, the ymj sect was immediately warned of what happened, so no one would be surprised of seeing their dear sect leader like this.

of course, lwj is also warned of the situation (as if they could let hgj in the dark about his husband). So while they all have that fun at the inn, you have ymj SIC and lwj on their way to them to make sure their respective reason of worries is alright.

meanwhile, the juniors are still stuck to deal with a wwx who is somehow more mischievous than before and a jc who is actually ready to /follow him/ in these ideas.

It is a strange evening for the juniors than to deal with these men who they look up to but are now basically around their age. But as no one has reached them yet for help, they decide that staying at the inn would be better. After all, it is close to where everything happened and they actually have yet to fully deal with what has been causing problems to this village.

They were going to take three rooms (thankfully to jl money, the juniors could share the biggest room here), but wwx asked why three when he and jc can share one. It takes a bit of arguing, only for jl to give in because he cannot argue against jiujiu telling him it would be stupid to spend on a room that isn't even needed.

So they now have two rooms and the juniors are a bit nervous about it.

What if they suddenly get back to normal in the middle of the night? Would they be alright in the same room?

"But don't you think senior way and sect leader jiang are strangely... very close to one another?" oyz ends up asking after a while.

Sure, they all had heard about how close the two had been in the past, but they felt like people had forgotten to tell them about how they seemed to flirt together?! This isn't right, especially since now, wwx is married to hgj!!

little did they know that wwx and jc had actually been pining for /years/ in the past.

it was Jiang "I am not enough he can find better" Cheng and Wei "I know jc doesn't see me as a servant but I still cannot be his for this reason" Ying being an absolute idiot. They had experienced together, mostly because they trusted each other in trying those, hiding behind it only being experiments and everyone does that yes, it wasn't because they were in love with each other.

These are the same idiots who most likely still had romantic love for each other, but had too much baggage at this point to go on with it.

But now you have them away from anything that could have been a cause of worries and a reminder of why they "couldn't". Sure, in their mind, it was only yesterday that yzy would have wiped wwx at the thought of his sleeping with her son, or that jfm was always putting wwx first.

But they also understood that now, no one would do such a thing. Now they would probably be side by side (and the role was probably reversed in the public eyes).

Now they were away and could a bit more easily indulge. especially in an inn.

They were happy to finally be in their room after checking out. Despite technically being the youngest of the group now, the juniors were still looking up for their opinions and also making sure they were alright. the duo was more than happy to finally be alone.

the moment they were in, wwx slapped a silencing talisman on the door, turning to jc with a grin, starting to tease him again about how he has been acting since earlier with the kids.

it ends up with them playfully arguing until jc finally pushes wwx to the bed and pins him down on it. It surprises them a bit all the ease it took jc to do it, after all, to them it wasn't so long ago that they were to the same strength, both physically and in cultivation. wwx laugh at this, since he was usually the one to pin jc down on a bed "A-cheng has gotten so strong" he praised with a grin.

jc shut him up with a kiss, wwx more than happy to indulge, pulling him closer.

It is a bit weird, since this is jc older body, while wwx simply did not have his at all. Yet it was as if they didn't care for any of it, as long as it was them it would always be alright (plus jc would lie if he said this body wasn't attractive too, even if differently).

hands soon start to roam over unfamiliar skin, slowly taking robes away so they can have direct access to the skin. fingers run over scares for which they do not know the history (and honestly they don't want to know right now).

After a while wwx ends up flipping them over, grinning when he is finally atop jc, kissing along his neck down his chest (giving some love to those harsh scars on his chest, feeling like he has an idea where they come from, yet he pushes it far away).

wwx in this body isn't as strong as jc, yet he lets him take over, letting wwx do as he wishes, more than happy that they can finally have this moment for them, knowing he will have all the time he wants to do whatever he wants with wwx too.

the night goes on like this, wwx taking all he wants and gladly letting jc take all he wants too.

To say the least, they didn't sleep much that night (which these older bodies do not seem to agree with).

man tries not to stare in disbelief and disapproval at the mark they may or may not have left visible on each other's neck (they might have gone a bit overboard with the knowledge of no one here to scold them). the lan juniors are a bit conflicted because they do not want for hgj to be destroyed by this (but lsz can easily see how happy this makes senior wei).

jl is in a way worried this will only end up hurting his jiujiu /again/. it is good to see him so happy, but what will it be like when they get back to normal? Will he be alone again?

and on the side oyz look about to go crazy over this new development.

They know that both men had been deaged, but neither would have actually expected for something like this to happen. Sure, wwx and jc had a history of being really close, but none of them would have expected it to turn out like this. How could lwj have missed it in their youth?

it doesn't take long before the ymj SIC comes up to his sect leader, politely saluting him while presenting himself (he knows jc must have no idea who he is).

jc is a bit surprised by the action, still not used to the idea he was indeed a sect leader now (but also he had no memory of this man, had he been newer to LP?).

wwx give the man a glance, a bit unsure why /he/ wasn't the sic by jc sides (the juniors did tell them some of the history, but it never told him why he wasn't by jc sides anymore). then they looked at lwj who had approached wwx so suddenly, actually making him back off a little bit, not expecting for the man to come up to him so suddenly.

lwj clearly looks hurt for a moment, hand retracting as his eyes lingered on wwx neck and a couple of exposed marks. he looks displeased for a moment, yet no comments come and he goes back to his usual unexpressive face.

This does trouble wwx, looking back at the juniors who are greeting hgj politely. they have to explain again what happened the day before, saying they didn't have too much time to find out what happened since they had more pressing matters that they still hadn't fully taken care of yet.

"We are enough today that we can split, can't we?" jc asked. They were now 8, which included 2 that were actually older and more experimented now that they were both deaged.

"We could keep investigating here while you two go back to where everything happened" ljy suggested.

Every juniors agreed, not interested to be stuck in the weird and awkward situation that would happen once jc and wwx would go back to being close while lwj couldn't really do anything because this wasn't really the wwx he married (from what he understood, this wwx

was from a time when they barely even knew each other, he couldn't exactly expect wwx to accept so easily that they are husband now, doesn't stop from hurting when he sees what he sees).

🔥Unpopular opinion on certain ships that I won't name in mdzs that are just super silly?

Just for you my dear I opened ao3 to look at what the popular ships that aren't wangxian (♥) are so I can chat about the one's I think are silly. I don't have any specifically strong opinions so I'm just going to ramble about all of them on a list.

Xicheng: I only find this one fun if LXC rejects JC in the end. I think the whole idea that JC wants to be something with LXC has potential, even with his canon homophobia I think someone could sell that much if they wrote it well, but LXC ever reciprocating anything just feels inherently OOC to me, especially given what JC's relationship with WangXian is like.

XiYao: I also don't see it, but I could enjoy it if it was a horror story or something deeply fucked up. Not my thing, I see why it exists though, at least these two have a close relationship.

SangCheng: Nope. JC is too much angry and too much effort for poor NHS, let him live happily being the lazy young master he wants to be, managing JC's emotions is liiiike a full time job.

XuanLi: I get it and I will write it for the purposes of Jin Ling, but also I think JYL is too good for JZX.

XueXiao: doesn't have any right being above SongXiao unless all of this is horror fic writing. D:

SongXiao: good boys, not super attached, but go them! I hope they can surpass XueXiao one day.

ChengXian: ew ew ew. Cursed, WWX would never.

NieLan: eeehhhhhh I get why it exists, LXC deserves better though.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

Oh man, like. All of them? I tend to only fall for unpopular characters, so that's a long list. But keeping it just to a few choice people in the Untamed;

Xue Yang. Obviously. He's brilliant, he's dedicated, he's fucked up in some really interesting ways and he got so close to having a redemption arc and happy ending before everything came crashing down! If he'd been the protagonist/viewpoint character, you know he'd be getting the fandom's WWX cinnamon roll treatment. But alas.

Jiang Cheng. That so many people dislike him honestly baffles me? I see so many takes that are frankly based in extremely shallow readings, disregarding his trauma, his world context, the impossible balance between his crushing responsibilities and the people important to him. He's not your homophobic dad or schoolyard bully, he's a deeply traumatized person doing the best with what he's got despite losing everything dear to him over and over, and he's trying so hard. He's loud and has a hot temper, but for fuck's sake, there's so much love there and you'd almost have to be willfully blind not to see it!

Jin Guangyao. Another of those "if he'd been the main character/viewpoint character, people would have loved him" ones. He's intelligent, determined, hardworking and loyal - though frequently pushed way beyond his breaking point in that loyalty. Pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness, but it's because the world's one big trolley problem to him - he sacrifices the few to help the many (even if yes, that does include himself in 'the many'), but he doesn't take pleasure in the hurt he causes (except in that one pretty understandable case of his dad). He deserves so much compassion, or at the very least understanding!

Should I put Song Lan on here? A lot of people seem to hate on him for very shallow, ship-related reasons, but within the plot, he tried his very hardest to set things right. It's not his fault they were all already doomed by the narrative and he walked into Yi City that day as the unwitting catalyst.

17. there should be more of this type of fic/art

For fics, Yi City fix-its that don't count killing Xue Yang as "fixing it". Stories digging into the hot mess of the complex, fascinating canon-verse, or at least reincarnation.

More fics with characterization I vibe with - a complicated, rough-edged but ultimately lovable Xue Yang, a compassionate but stubborn and somewhat brittle Xiao Xingchen and a Song Lan who feels so much and is so bad at showing it. More SXX fics overall!

For art, more art with the CQL character designs! The designs for the other adaptations are kind of cute, but they're just not my guys, and I feel pretty lukewarm toward them on the whole.

(And fellow artists - please, please, please don't forget Xue Yang's missing finger! 😭 I see so much fanart with either 10 intact fingers, or a glove with a fully articulated left pinky. His lost finger is the driving force of his entire character arc, don't just forget about it...😢)

Hmm... 🤔 On the whole, I don't feel a lot of shame for my tastes in fiction. I'm surprised I actually ended up really liking the main couple as much as I did - in a love story, no less? That literally never happens, I always go for the sideline gremlins.Other than that, though...

Trying very hard to hold up the blorbos and my usual go-to tropes, groping around for any sense of horror or shame, but I can't think of anything really. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

I guess I'm that one (1) person who actually likes the Yin Iron plot? I genuinely think CQL made a lot of good choices to tie the sprawling narrative together more cohesively, and I liked the introduction of the Yin Iron and how it led into the creation of the Yin Tiger Seal rather than tossing the latter in as an "Oh yeah, this was a thing that totally existed all along, forgot to mention". (I know MDZS was written and posted in installment, and that can make it hard to work with foreshadowing etc, but even so. I do think CQL did a good job tightening up the story in many ways.)

And don't get me wrong, I absolutely don't mind the idea of Xue Yang as an absolute nobody clawing his way up from nothing! It's a delicious version, too! But there's just something about the idea of a family he could have belonged to, a sense of community he could have had, ripped away centuries before he was even born.

If I want to be a petty, I guess I could put "Xue Yang is canonically brilliant" under this question, too, because I wish that was explored in more fics and meta. The boy is a prodigy. He's a genius. He's also a street-brawler, petty thief and murderous little piece of shit, but that doesn't take away the first point. Let Xue Yang be the highly, dangerously intelligent Problem that he actually is!

Also I just Know that the instant Wei Wuxian would even get the slightest idea of turning things on Jiang Cheng, his Wei Wuxian bullshit radar would be Going Off. That man needs to be prepared for anything at any time with Wei Wuxian as a brother lmao, there's no catching him off guard as long he can see Wei Wuxian before he attacks with how in sync they are.

You can not tell me that they wouldn't chase each other around Lotus Pier until they found Jiang Yanli, so whoever was being chased could hide behind her btw. I know they would do that 100%. Especially Wei Wuxian because he has no shame about hiding behind his sister like a child. Jiang Yanli's presence is an instant temporary truce... for however long she can take their bickering before she either 1. decides that whichever brother is hiding behind her deserves to get tickled, so she abandons them to their fate or 2. gets fet up enough with both of them that she just takes matters into her own hands and decides they both need tickles if she ever wants to get some peace and quiet again.

On that note yes Jiang Yanli is absolutely down to use tickling her brothers to either get them in line or to help them forget the sky-high pile of duties they need to attend to. You can't tell me that that wouldn't be 100% in line with her character. And poor Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian can't do anything but protest and plead with her to have mercy on them because they can't fight back, they don't want to hurt her! And they also can't deny her anything! So either she let's it drop, or they have to sit down and just let her get them, which is horribly flustering to them, and honestly does more to keep them in line than her particular brand of gentle but insistent tickling.

(Aah help I went insane, is this even coherent?? Also please don't feel pressured to answer this ask either, I just had many thoughts about the Lotus Pier siblings apparently!!)

Jiang Yanli would be equally ruthless as her brother with tickling, I think, but in a totally different kind of it. I feel like she wouldn't tease them too much and her touches - while more precise and certain - would be very light and soft, with a few squeezes and clawing here and there only when their laughter is starting to die out.

Also you are soooo so right!!!! I feel like, with their bickering, both of them would end up being tickled, because she would ask them very gently to wait a little while, she only will resolve a quick matter first' while turning around and tickle attacking the one behind her with all the scribbling, all the pokes that will leave them squirming and pleading under her gently, tickly touch. And the other one will wait, of course, his dear shijie/jiejie asked him too and they would never dream to not follow it.

When Jiang Cheng is the one to be tickled, Wei Wuxian will take as his personal job to tease and poke (literally and not literally) a bit of fun with him, especially because he won't try to fight too much back, he doesn't want to hurt Yanli (and kind of like the attention too) all while Yanli will be sending him just the most caring, lovely smile, complementing his laughter a few times and asking if he is still ticklish here or there before focusing on said spot, being presented with the most delighted reactions, happy to see her youngest brother play around a little and relax. Jiang Cheng doesn't even try to hold back his reactions because that is simply who he is around his jiejie, more relaxed and happy and at home as ever. He doesn't even feel embarassed w the squealing or high pitched giggles she continues to find with her playful tickles, because she looks just so joyful and happy to make him laugh that he could never hold it against her.

When Wei Wuxian is the one being tickled he will immediately fall in full dramatics, rolling around and letting out the loudest belly laughter, fully enjoying the attention and the way his anttics makes her tickling falter because she keeps running to cover her own amused snickers with him al while Jiang Cheng continues to go from complaining about his whinning/dramatics to taunt him for being so ticklish, fallling into their usual bickering. It all ends up tough when Jiang Yanli finally decides that Wei Wuxian already had his time to shine and then start scratching and drilling on his hips, which immediately makes him falter and forget everything else but how much it tickles, shrieks and giggly pleas escaping his mouth in waves, the boy hugging himself as so to not hit her accidentally and end up wiggling all around like a worm. Yanli coos and chuckles at that, calling him affectionate nicknames afterwards when the attack is over but he is still snickering on the floor, giantic smiles in all of their faces, and it always get him to feel a little shy, until she also refers to Jiang Cheng w another silly nickname and now HE is the one blushing and trying to pout/scwol away so they began giggling again (since if they start bickering Yanli lovely, ticklish and mischievious attention will start all over again)

They also get her back, although much more gently and silly as their own tickle wars, especially when she needs a bit of cheering up after a hard day. They praise all of her reactions as well and try their best wto replicate her fethered like tickles, adding a few squeezes and drumming only to get her to crackle a bit and forget the problems. Of course, after the end they always end up in a hug pile, that continues to get giggles from time to time because of a certain someone (all of them, truly) keeps wiggling a single finger here and there to get a surprised yelp and squeals.

She is also very happy to sneak a poke or two around the day, smiling when Wei Wuxian gasps loudly at her and then falls on the floor in more of his atticts and Jiang Cheng tries very hard to pretend nothing happened while a grin tries to stretch in his face and he keeps trying to hide it.

The Untamed has only made me cry twice, but dear god the times it did--

I've gotten close to sobbing a lot (like with jyl, that one killed me. but still didn't cry). But the two times I actually did wind up crying was with Jiang Cheng after their parents died and with Jin Ling on the pier when he breaks down.

maybe it's the repressed childhood trauma but those two moments remind me of why I love this series so freaking much.

Saving your dashboards: analysis under cut

With JC, specifically, it was after he fights wwx in the field -- when he collapses in the grass and starts sobbing and screaming "I want my mom, I want my dad, I want my people/friends/clan..." because in that moment, after he's just blamed wei wuxian for everything that's happened, wearing zidian on his wrist, jiang yanli waiting for them unaware of what's just passed. After that, he just breaks down and becomes a little kid again. He's lost so much, doesn't know if he'll ever get to go back home. He watched his mother beat wwx, watched their father leave them behind, feeling more alone than ever despite still having his siblings by his side because he was supposed to be able to protect them all. He's supposed to be the future clan sect leader, how can he not even hold his own ground? His own home? He's broken and confused bc now it all depends on him and he's never been good enough for all this. "cultivation is his life," but when you have a brother like the great future Yiling Patriarch... he just wants his family all together again, calling out for his parents like a child waking up from a nightmare in the dark, trying to regain their surroundings.

Then with Jin Ling, he's on the pier heading to Yunmeng and he should be okay, he should be fine because he has his uncles still -- he does, he does. He won't admit anything about jin guangyao yet. But... now he has another uncle? The one who named him, never got to meet him, killed his dad and his mother and hundreds of others in his family and the other clan sects-- but Oh god, here's The Ghost General who killed his dad and he's talking to Lan Suzhui and he's getting so close. Jin Ling doesn't have friends, but LSZ has always been kind; he backed him up in the Burial Mounds, always ready to see all sides of things, maybe the only one left who would understand if Jin Ling could admit all the turmoil in his mind, the feelings he refuses to address towards the people he's been raised to hate -- people that could've been his family. But Wen Ning tries to touch LSZ and no, no no no not again, I can't do this again-- and he tries to draw his father's sword because even if he will never know that peacock, jl knows he's always protecting him. because it's too much to think about his mother protecting him through the yiling patriarch. But then the other juniors gang up against him to protect LSZ bc he just pushed him and oh god he just pushed him, he was supposed to protect him and now the Yiling Patriarch is here and he's looking at LSZ like that, like how he should look at jin ling but he can't because they're not family, not anymore. And Wen Ning calls him Jin Roulan and no, don't say that name, don't remind me but Wei Wuxian looks back at him and calls to him, warns him but doesn't glare or scream or hurt him. He just tells him to put the sword away and no no no this is all I have left of him, please don't so he holds the sword in its sheath and sobs. He collapses on the pier and cries, wailing without humiliation because all he can think about it how everyone must hate me for things to be this way bc he's just a kid that grew up without parents. Just a kid with Jin Guangyao as his father's memory and Jiang Cheng as his mother's (which, really doesn't do either of them justice no matter how much jc and even jgy might try, bc they can never be their siblings). Because he pushes everyone away. Because he doesn't dare get close to anyone else just to lose them again. Because his uncle might be the cause of all this suffering. Because his other uncle -- that he's never claimed -- was supposed to be behind all this, all sixteen years of his life spent hating him. Because his other uncle is hurt and crass and desperate to protect him but can never really give him what jiang yanli would have. But he's all jin ling has left, so he runs to him and away from all the others even if it burns him.

TLDR: Idk, just really sobbed at those spots where they both just act so much like little kids because Jiang Cheng just lost his childhood while Jin Ling never got to have one.

how did you get into mdzs/cql and how long have you been in the fandom?

Oh no you're assuming I understand the passage of time and have a working memory!! Late 2018, probably? A friend had been reading it since 2017 (?) when EXR began to work on it and I spent like a year saying it wasn't my style but they wore me out and I gave it a try and. It was good. But I was quite happy to hang out only with my friend for a long time. I think it was only maybe a year later that I began checking out the online fandom, and I lurked for a while before joining in.

unpopular opinions?

How long do you have? Because I mean, different sections of the fandom have different popular opinions, and since I dabble around most corners, I see takes I violently disagree with on a daily basis. Um... As long as you're giving me the platform - being strict and being philosophically aligned with Legalism are two very different things. LQR is a very strict Confucian scholar. NMJ is much closer to Legalism in terms of philosophy, though of course he's less interested in formal philosophy than LQR. (If you want to be really precise, LQR seems to be aligned with Feizi, which is a somewhat non-mainstream approach to Confucian thought, and might explain why people have some trouble understanding where he fits in.)

three headcanons:

one that you believe so strongly it's pretty much canon,

LXC and NMJ are basically childhood friends, and LXC leverages that personal connection to essentially run the intelligence branch of the Sunshot Campaign independently, functionally being the highest ranking person in the "army" (it's not really an official army but you know what I mean), and outside of NMJ's inner circle of powerful people, no one can understand wth LXC is even doing, except that he keeps showing up all over the map and turning the tide. The Wen have a price on his head.

one that doesn't make much sense but it's very dear to your heart,

NHS is weirdly into theater. Not acting, not even watching - he's A Patron of the Arts™️. As part of his project to spoil NHS, JGY occasionally consults with him for Important Events.

and one that you don't think is close to canon at all but would be interesting if it was.

For a while, young WWX secretly tried to overcome his fear of dogs for JC's sake. In my mind, this would foreshadow the Golden Core storyline - JC loses his dogs so WWX willingly undergoes trauma to try and find a way to get the dogs back because this is all His Fault Actually.

let me ask you smt that i'm dying to know. when wwx died, he didn't answer the calling of the sects. ok. but I've been arguing with delulus who think that wwx didn't replay to the inquiry lwj played every single day 💔 because wwx's soul was lost and into pieces. it wasn't into pieces, I know, but— is there anywhere in the novel that he didn't answer because he didn't want to? I was so sure it existed... why would he be unable to answer if his soul was whole? idk this headcanons are so damn big that they become real to ppl wtf let the canon thing be, I DON'T LIKE YOUR FANON

LWJ playing Inquiry in the first place is fanon.

Wei Wuxian's soul was definitely whole:

As the arm raged, blue veins bulged from all its tendons and muscle, and the atmosphere grew even more oppressive. If it had been anyone else guarding the array’s west position, they could not have escaped Lan Qiren’s blood filled fate and would have fallen long ago. Wei Wuxian was secretly apprehensive. It should’ve been impossible for their “Soul Evocation” duet to fail to summon the deceased’s spirit…unless…unless it had been severed into pieces with his corpse!

It looked like his dear brother here had died a slightly worse death than him. Though Wei Wuxian’s body had been ripped into smaller pieces, at least his soul had remained intact and whole. (Chapter 19)

Nevertheless no one was able to summon him:

Wei Wuxian was supposed to have died at the Burial Mounds, but since then, not a single person had been able to summon him. His soul had, in a word, vanished. (Chapter 1)

He talks about his ghostly existence here:

How was he a “being of irredeemable wickedness?” Sure, his reputation wasn’t great, and the circumstances of his death were tragic and miserable. But first of all, he hadn’t turned into an evil spirit, and second, he hadn’t sought revenge! You could search all of earth and heaven without finding a single more peaceful, better-natured ghost. The more he thought about it, the less plausible it seemed. He turned to Lan Wangji. “Hanguang Jun, did you ever burn any paper money for me? At least you must have, right?” he whispered.

Lan Wangji eyed him, then glanced down and brushed away a bit of ash that had gotten on his sleeve. Silently, he lifted his gaze and surveyed the distant scenery, not a word passing between his lips.

Surely not? Wei Wuxian thought as he stared at Lan Wangji’s serene profile. Had there really been no one?! (Chapter 42)

You were right about how CQL makes it hard to completely like it, but hard to completely hate it too.

Like yes, Xiao Zhan makes WWX a little too emotional at times but he also arguably gives us that most obvious version of WWX being done with JC’s whole personality.

Yes it messes with a lot of things about LWJ, but it also gave us “you are not qualified to talk to me”

Yes there could have been better casting for certain characters, but look how much effort and clear adoration XY’s actor had for his role.

Major low budget, but holy shit did Xiao Zhan do a very convincing trauma response to his worst fear despite working with a low effort prop.

There’s that horrid JC and WQ one sided romance shit. But also makes JC look even worse in this version for turning against someone he was supposed to have strong feelings for because she returned a comb when it was clear he wouldn’t help her family.

CQL really falls into that weird “definitely not the greatest but not as bad as it could have been” middle ground at times

I think the best description of CQL is "vaguely competent with some exceptions in both directions". It might be good for an idol drama (I don't know, it's the only idol drama I've ever watched), but it certainly doesn't match up to proper dramas. I'd say the trick to enjoying it is that you can't watch anything with a proper budget and skilled actors immediately before or after and also try not to think of better shows you've watched while watching CQL or vice versa. ...That last part brought to you by "Now every time I watch Hannibal I get annoyed at people calling WYB the king of microexpressions when Mads Mikkelsen is right there". (And now I'm annoyed about that again, oh dear.)

Anyway, I think the important thing to keep in mind is that CQL wasn't supposed to be high art. It's a shitty idol drama made to make a lot of cash off of a popular novel and some pretty faces, and it was very successful in that role. With that in mind, yeah, it's pretty good in places! But it's never going to be great, and that's fine, because it isn't supposed to be. Some of the actors are genuinely good, some of the sets are genuinely pretty, some of the dialogue choices are genuinely well-written. Most of the actors are vaguely competent at best, most of the sets are cheap, most of the dialogue that isn't straight from the book is poorly done... but there are some good parts (and some parts that are so bad they're hilarious; I will never be over JC's overacting, he's chewing the scenery so hard I'm amazed he never literally takes a bite out of the set), and with something like CQL that's what you have to focus on. Just shut off your inner critic and enjoy 50 episodes of vaguely competent nonsense brought out of the pit of awfulness by being based on a good book! ...Which would be a lot easier if it weren't for all the people who scream about how it's the best thing ever like they've never watched an actually good drama or TV show or movie ever in their lives.

FIVE?? oh man i'm not sure i even have that many? there's songxiao which gives me life (tho it might be cheating since their parallels with wx is what makes them to compelling to me), 3zun in all its VASTLY different iterations (nielan for childhood friends whose time interrupted by tragedy, xiyao for secret and deep affection cultivated through time that not even cruel betrayal was able to break it, and nieyao for toxic exes whose hatred hurts everytime they remember how much they used to admire and trust each other) and, um............... i think that's it? i'm not a very shippy person rip.... i could include xuanli in there, but mostly bc they’re already established

jin guangyao!!! this definitely came from reading the novel afterwards, since after finishing cql i rly didnt like him. as much as much of an amazing job that Zhu Zanjin did as JGY, what really drives me to his character is pretty much everything that was cut in the live-action, which is a shame. anyway, we stan an awful little man who has made terrible choices out of fear and paranoia. hope you're having amazing hatesex in that coffin, king
