The NPCs can be split pretty cleanly into the location-locked / ship crew camps, but I feel like the GM treatment vs the End Result sometimes doesn’t match up. The location-locked NPCs are quite lovingly sketched-out people. The Broker and Hildred, Adrian and Margaret, the Glas crew (aka Mirrorverse Uhuru), Hewano and Liuto, the Kesslers are all characters you can take seriously or build a world around. They have a hero-of-their-own-story air. Being made as part of the story arc, each completes their own mini-journey in a satisfying way. After that—pretty easy to forget about them not as any flaw of the building process, but because that was 2 years and 100 episodes ago. Things have happened since then.

The crew, on the other hand—Almost 100% pure bit. Created on the spot as a bit or carried over from Dear Uhurus. Less than 10 seconds’ thought put in to the content of the actual character. Despite being paper-thin cutouts, they so consistently show up as set dressing at the start and end of each arc that they stick in the mind more than the actual people you meet along the way. You cannot avoid getting reminded of Daisy and Fuentes and their unibrow.

The crew comes with the ship, and therefore have the most continuous ongoing arcs. Investment in a bit crew member is likely to pay off in the future, while investment in a well-rounded arc NPC has one single guaranteed payoff (even if it’s a much bigger payoff). While our heroes will bid a fond farewell to the Kesslers, Wendell Barge will be there for them and for you forever. Until he gets hit on the death chart. Oops.

I love the bit characters and I think that the spontaneous player bits are part of what sets Skyjacks above other shows that expect the GM to do all the work of making the cast. I can also say that it’s incongruous for so many cool side characters get forgotten (by me. Sorry) while JOJ is like the third NPC who comes to mind (rip)

i really don’t think it’s “typical dragon age fandom nonsense” for people to be genuinely upset about the world state choices. combat, level design, art direction, gameplay gimmicks, those have all varied across each dragon age game. the one thing that’s remained constant are nods to our previous choices.

i wasn’t expecting my HoF to come riding in on a griffon, but i can’t find a monument dedicated to warden tabris somewhere around the anderfels? lucanis couldn’t have some lines about the time that one arainai boy was stirring up trouble in antiva city? you’re gonna tell me that making a mage the new divine wouldn’t have some impact on nevarra and antiva? on the anderfels, the supposed most devout militant andrastian nation in thedas? you’re saying nobody in the north is paying attention to who rules orlais or ferelden? come on.

theres a small part of me that thinks the reason Chilchuck stayed with the party and went back in the dungeon in the first place was because he didn’t want to leave Laios alone. That Laios was moreso the reason he stayed.

Really fucked up that, when they’re young, Patrick and Art are SO tactile with each other, so comfortable sharing the same space. Art lets Patrick touch him and move him and physically overwhelm him and easily acquiesces to it, if not outright enjoys it.

Then in the present, they’ve been so far out of each other’s orbit for so long, held such animosity that when they have their moment alone in the sauna, Art physically recoils from Patrick’s close proximity! It’s so painful to watch because even as Patrick’s goading him, it’s so obvious he wants to be able to get back into Art’s space. But Art has erected all these walls around himself, he refuses to give Patrick an inch or even admit to missing how close they used to be!

AND THEN we see Art and Tashi later and he wants her to hold him, to be gentle with him, and just TOUCH him. Like, he does miss that kind of close physical contact! He either doesn’t know how to ask for it or is uncomfortable being that openly vulnerable. Worth noting that he pretty much always defers to Tashi in regard to initiating physical intimacy (with their first kiss, though he does state his desire, SHE has to be the one to make the first move). And it seems pretty obvious that Tashi herself isn’t comfortable providing that intimacy, whereas Patrick actively seeks to provide it (the hug/forehead kiss after their win together in the early years, dragging the stool closer to him).

Art has tried very hard to act like he doesn’t need physical affection and even though his discipline and devotion to Tashi has made him a stronger tennis player, it’s made him a hollow person, which, in turn, has kept him from becoming a GREAT tennis player.

All of this, of course, is why the ending hits so damn hard.
