@alaskan-wallflower YESSSS! Finally someone talks about it.
Would have been much better if instead of starting his povs with “the albino” or “Silas the Albino” he would have put some more though and started them as “the monk”. Silas may have been very mindful of his albinism when it was the supposed cause of the mistreatment his mother and himself suffered from the hand of his drunken father, and the contempt he received from those he met afterwards as a homeless youth and as a prisoner, but now? Now he would much better deem himself as “the monk”, “the weapon of God”, “the faithful”, because that is what his brainwashed head would think.
I grant Dan Brown that representing albinism can be quite difficult (specially since there is a great lack of classical character with albinism that have not been portrayed as “evil”, “witchy” or “mad”, the only one that comes to my mind being king Zāl from the Shahnameh), but for God’s sake, it was 2003, not 1803. He did try to fend himself saying that Silas “was a tragic character, product of the manipulation of his spiritual guide and the mistreatment he suffered as a son and as a stray boy”. But not only does he represent the character’s behaviour in a very stereotypical way -“he liked the pain”-, but the whole representation of his albinism (AND HIS HEALTH STATE) is like. Wattpad level.
It should also be noted that Dan Brown seems to believe that Silas’ many trials and hardships made him thrive in the physical aspect, turning him into a very strong guy. And honestly, I DON’T BELIEVE HIM. I would much rather believe the ol’ reliable of “genetics” -since Silas’ father, a docker, was said to be strong too- before believing than him being half starved, always cold and alone since he was seven, and the many “physical punishments” he bestowed himself, turned him into the deathly weapon he is by the beginning of the book. It would be more realistic if he was some sickly, lanky and anguished man that had to use his wits and what little force he has left to kill the people.
But Dan Brown just went “what if I make this guy have albinism, that would be so cool” and forgot any research. Anyways.
i’m reading the da vinci code because i heard there was a character with albinism and holy shit lmfao
they had me when they said he had ‘translucent white skin and red eyes’ but when i got more into it and found out he’s a fuckinf SHARPSHOOTER?? and he can drive? and READ FINE PRINT?
Also I think this quote from an article is important:
“Michael McGowan, an albino who heads the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, said "The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.” this article was written in 2006 btw (i love the referring to McGowan as ‘an albino’ too, shit goes hard./s)
god i love the portrayal of albinism in media. it’s so warped.

Spent a ridiculous amount of time last night obsessively editing my hand written zines in Photoshop to take away any tiny blemishes so they were definitely readable.
Whatever. Understand or don't.

lead balloon (the tumblr post that saved me)
if this comic resonated with you, it would mean the world to me if you donated to this palestinian family's escape fund.
--
no creative notes because this isn't that kind of comic.
I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.
I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.
If you'd like to do the same, you can look at Operation Olive Branch, which hosts hundreds of Palestinian escape funds or donate to Safebow, which has helped facilitate the safe crossing and securing of important medical procedures for over 150 at-risk palestinians since the beginning of the genocide.

Disclaimer these are just a small sampling of some possible writer traits I’ve noticed either in myself or in fics I read. Also consider a rb for sample size !

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good
