Once again bringing up the fact that albinism is always tied to varying degrees of visual impairment. Disability is inherent in our condition and glossing over this (due to ignorance or not) is an act of ableism and fetishisation. Before you create an original character or any sort of fiction you ought to not stick to lazy research. Albinism affects real people, not just animals and social stigma because of our looks is only half of the story. Please do not contribute to a superficial understanding of an already rare and not researched enough condition, happy 10 years of international albinism awareness day.

it’s kinda funny how almost every character with albinism in media is always portrayed as a villain. as if that isn’t feeding into every stereotype out there.
the only protagonist i’ve found with albinism in media was in a book where the girl turns out to be a witch. which is arguably on the level of bad as the evil albino stereotype.
idk why this bothers me so much. nobody knows about albinism and it’s not like it’s actively discriminated against. but i wish there was more media where more normal people had albinism instead of the PWA turning out to be an evil villain or a witch, they turn out to be a normal person with normal struggles. like give me a story about a character with albinism trying to navigate the world on their own terms, trying to fit in and such WITHOUT using stereotypes.
like yes. i know people being ignorant towards a certain condition isn’t the worst thing in the world. maybe i have no right to complain about it given the other tings that are happening in the world that kinda trump issues like this. but it’s still an issue. the fact that people believe these things is just sad to me tbh.
another thing that bugs me is when people refer to us as ‘albinos’. like not everyone hates that word. some PWAs are okay with it. i just say it because it’s shorter and easier to type out than ‘person with albinism’ but even in media seeing the character being referred to as ‘the albino’ makes my stomach turn. people use the word ‘albino’ to refer to animals; most of the time. the word itself can feel dehumanizing sometimes, in certain contexts. for me it’s better to say person with albinism. it’s putting the person before the disability and it doesn’t feel as degrading.
anyway. my inbox is always open if you have questions for me about how to write a character with albinism. i know nobody is gonna see this or care but i just thought i’d say smth.

hi there!
i’ve been working on a story for several years with a character with albinism as the main protagonist.
my setting is an urban fantasy; there is no magic, but there is the supernatural, mostly ghosts, but i’ve considered angels and demons too. most people aren’t aware of the ghosts being around, but my main character has always been able to hear them, and gets sensory overwhelm from them (he is also autistic and too many voices is too much for him).
the main character has a twin sister and i’ve wondered on if i should give them both albinism, or make it so they just have light hair and features. his twin passes away and so he decides to try to overcome the overwhelm of listening to the ghost voices to try to hear / talk to his sister again.
other characters are aware that ghosts exist but cannot hear them like my main character can, they use standard ghost hunting equipment. as of this stage i’m unsure on the scope of my story; in my world i know my character isn’t the only one with a gift like this but i don’t know if it’s relevant to include. his powers do NOT stem from his albinism; he just happens to have both. his twin did not have the same experience, and they did not have any kind of twin telepathy or whatever going on.
i also want to say that the hearing ghosts thing doesn’t benefit my character much in any way and didn’t come with any powers. he steal has to deal with day to day tasks like shopping or walking with his cane, he has light sensitivity, etc. he very much isn’t an ultra powerful guy he can just hear ghosts lol
anyway here are my questions
1. is this a good depiction or should i change anything? e.g. making more people have powers, or making him just not have albinism, or something else
2. are there any specific struggles you would personally like to see represented in a story featuring a character with albinism? big or small
hey! thanks for reaching out!
i would definitely make more people have powers just because it gets a little bit frisky(?) to have a person w albinism the only magic/spell involved character in a novel y’know?
and personally? maybe just don’t overdo it with some descriptions, like how pale the skin/hair is because i’ve read books with characters with albinism and it almost never ends well. i think it’s possible to get the point across without descriptions like ‘pale skin’ y’know? also i’d say to not give them red eyes…people with albinism don’t have naturally red eyes, that’s a myth. our eyes are naturally light blue/purple. and also maybe note some stuff about sun/light sensitivity? that could be really helpful to properly explain what lavinia is since a lot of people don’t actually know the true extent of it. also with being visually impaired, a lot of people don’t realize people with albinism are visually impaired and legally blind.
thanks for asking! hope this helps! feel free to come back with any other questions !

don’t ever tell a male SA survivor; “You’re supposed to enjoy it”
don’t ever tell a male SA survivor; "good game/job"
don’t ever tell a male SA survivor; “You’re a boy, you can’t get raped.”
don’t ever tell a male SA survivor; “that doesn’t count.”

don’t ever tell an SA survivor; “They’re family, they wouldn’t do that.”
don’t ever tell a SA survivor; “I don’t believe you.”

don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “They’d never do that.”
don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “She’s a girl, girl’s don’t abuse.”
don’t ever tell a male DA/GA survivor; “Boys can’t be abused.”
don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “But you have no scars.”
don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “You’re just making things up for attention.”
don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “you should’ve just fought/yelled back.”
don’t ever tell a DA/GA survivor; “It’s your fault.”
don’t ever tell an attempt survivor; “that’s selfish of you.”
don’t ever tell an attempt survivor; “I’ve had it worse/i know someone who has it worse.”
don’t ever tell an attempt survivor; “that doesn’t sound like an attempt.”
don’t ever tell a POC; “you’d be way prettier with lighter skin.”
don’t ever tell a POC; “but you don’t look american?”
don’t ever tell a POC; “you should try skin bleaching.”
don’t ever tell a POC; “oh, are you in a gang or something?”
don’t ever tell a POC; “but your skin is so light, you can’t be colored.”
don’t ever tell a POC; “can you give me the N word pass?”

don’t ever tell an albino; “you’re white, not black.”
don’t ever tell an albino; “so are one of your parent white or something?”
don’t ever tell an albino; “you’d be prettier if you were normal.”
don’t ever tell an albino; “oh has anyone tired talking you limbs or something” [i will hunt whoever says this]
don’t ever tell a child; “you should take care of your siblings.”

don’t ever tell a child; “you’re too old to be doing this.”
don’t ever tell a child of divorced parents; “it’s your fault”
don’t ever tell a child of divorced parents; “pick a side”
don’t ever tell a child of divorced parents; “did you ever consider that you should’ve stepped in?”
don’t ever tell a child of divorced parents; “well if they never got together in the first place, they wouldn’t have had you”
you never know what a person is going through and don’t you dare shame a person for something they can’t control.
if you say any of these things you’re disgusting and you need to not only get educated but stop being a dick.
keep in mind that i am aware that these prompts don’t apply to everyone of a certain minority. But this is me teaching to simply be kind and pay respect and mind to a person’s experiences, minority, etc. there are multiple prompts that can be added but I will refrain to using those out of respect, and also due to censorship.

im going to bed but first i dont think sol and albin ever dated at launchpad but they did have a teenage thing where sol was in love w albin but has never had a friend before so thinks its normal and standard to think ur friend is the greatest wizard in the whole world and so cool and his glasses are really cute and i give him massages every day and also i get jealous when he makes new friends. albin also has a crush on sol but even as the chosen one remains rizzless and sol is obviously so hot and out of his league and also hes pretty sure the headmaster has been replaced by a evil lich so thats more pressing right now. and nothing ever actually happened and eventually they move on but theyve also never ever talked about it so its just a thing that hangs out in the background of their 20-ish year long friendship.

Today, I bring you one of the first drawings that I made for Mikami 2. The original draft is dated June 13th, 2022, but I couldn't resist polishing things up before posting it C:
[image ID: a digital drawing of Near and Mikami based on this scene from Brooklyn 99. In the first panel, Near asks, "Do I even weigh anything to you?" and in the second panel, Mikami replies, "No, it's like holding a couple of grapes." An arrow points to Mikami that reads, "has gone to the gym regularly for 10+ years." Both characters are smiling and look like they're having a good time. End image ID.]

i’m reading the da vinci code because i heard there was a character with albinism and holy shit lmfao
they had me when they said he had ‘translucent white skin and red eyes’ but when i got more into it and found out he’s a fuckinf SHARPSHOOTER?? and he can drive? and READ FINE PRINT?
Also I think this quote from an article is important:
“Michael McGowan, an albino who heads the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, said "The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.” this article was written in 2006 btw (i love the referring to McGowan as ‘an albino’ too, shit goes hard./s)
god i love the portrayal of albinism in media. it’s so warped.

I know you probably get questions like this a lot, but I’m just wondering
I’m writing a story that is set in a “magical” world type of thing, and one of the characters has albinism. I’ve been trying to do my best to give an accurate and not harmful representation of this character.
would it be harmful to have the character be a magic user, as all of the characters in this story/world also use magic (except for one, but that’s for unrelated purposes) , or would that be playing into the “witch” stereotype?
anyways, thanks in advance for your help, and I hope you have a great day!!!
No probelem! Always happy to help!
It depends on the context of the world…if everyone has magic then I say go for it! It’s just when the character with albinism is the ONLY person with magic then I’d say to reconsider. The problem only comes when the PWA is the only person with magic or a witch or something.
Hope this helps! feel free to ask any other questions if you need!
