Disappointed ....
As I’m trying to write some notes from class today, I checked out Facebook and Twitter because today, Richard Spencer spoke at my school, Texas A&M University, for a private event.
I myself was upset and sad to even hear about it, knowing the values my school stands by. Like respect, honor, and leadership, to name a few.
So I checked social media and there was a riot police out there to calm down the Spencer supporters and supporters against Spencer. It was just mind boggling to me and crazy how far it went.
One of our amazing traditions, Silver Taps, where we honor our fallen classmates who passed away in the past month, was overshadowed.
The message to spread love and peace was in the air for sure because of the Aggies United event happening in our football field. Which was the school coming together to spread that message and was against the Spencer talk.
Riots and violence doesn’t make peace happen. Martin Luther King Jr fought violence/hate with peace and I saw some students at school before I left with beautiful signs saying “Our nation loves all colors” and “Aggie Moms against racism” and even some with a Free Hug sign, which I gladly gave. Like that is nice. People that don't even go to my school were deliberately causing an uproar on our military sacred building, The Memorial Student Center. It is just disrespectful. More, in my opinion, can be done with peace, with quiet protests, with one's that speak more volumes by not saying anything at all. Things DO get done that way and our history has proof of it.
I just hope we NEVER get some trash like Richard Spencer to speak at my amazing school again. Yeah he had his right to free speech and we as Americans are entitled to it but I really don't get his message and I guess it's not something for me to try and understand but the protesters had the same free speech right as Spencer did. I just hate seeing people fighting, yelling and it being when we were segregated. Like that’s not how I want the world to be for me or my future kids. Like I want them to see people as people and not as a color. Why are we thrown into that mentality again? Our president elect has brought that back and as a latina, it obviously sickens me.
I honestly wanna cry because this really upsets me… why does it have to be this way? Why do we have to be mean and ugly just because of our skin color? Why can’t we spread love and happiness? Why can’t some people see that we are all the same on the inside? We all have a beating heart, a soul…
I just hope and pray everyone who was out protesting and at the Aggies United event were safe. I just hope everyone makes it home okay. We shouldn’t have to be living in a world like this man… we shouldn’t.

America, home of the 'American dream'. America, the ideal place to be. America, home of the brave land of the free. That's the image they want outsiders to see. They want you to believe that America is a place that will welcome you with open arms and make you feel at home. They produce headlines titled Great America but erase the fine print: 'If you are not white, prepare to be judged and be a subject of racism and prejudice.' Little children of color shunned by their peers because of the tone to their skin, 1st graders being yelled at for sticking up against a Caucasian classmate, black young adults being called thugs and hooligans while their white peers are being called confused and disturbed. As a black youth we are taught to take care of ourselves and defend others like us. As black adolescents we are taught phrases like 'yes officer, no officer'. As young adults we are taught to take advantage of higher education opportunities and told by our parents to stay out of trouble and be responsible. As adults we are expected to be a better version of our parents, a more successful image of those before us. As mothers and fathers it is in our best interest to keep our children informed and cautious. We are taught to go to job interviews with the story of Johnny and Jamal fresh in our minds, and we are taught to go to college interviews thinking about the story of Tyler and Tyrell. Nowadays in this 'Great America' the fine print becomes the headline, and 'Our America' becomes 'White America' and 'Black America'. In order to survive socially #BlackLivesMatter has become an epidemic across the white society because apparently they have forgotten about Martin Luther King and disregarded Jackie Robinson's accomplishments and refuse to acknowledge the fact that our current president is a man of color. In Black America you see headlines like 'Young African American Arrested for theft' while in white America you see the headline 'They've Done it Again, Black kid Steals From Innocent White American' As a person of color, as a black person, being educated and aware is your greatest asset. Take what you've learned and educate others as well.

If you are a white person and you have ever insulted a colored person because you think that they’re hair is “messy”, I want you to pick up the object next to you and shove it down your throat.
