Yo, Welcome to my photography blog!
This is a photography project with a focus on older digital cameras sold before the mid 2000s. I've been working with these sorts of cameras since 2022, which grew from my interest in retro computers that I have had since 2020 or so. Here, I'll introduce you to my cameras, my computer rig, and try to convince you that this is a cool hobby.
General Q & A:
Whats in the name? - Kb refers to Kilobyte, all of the photos I take with these cameras only take up a little over 100 Kilobytes of digital storage per photo. FD refers to the physical media the photos are stored in, currently one camera uses floppy disks (FD), the other two use compact flash (CF) and smart media (SM) cards. unfortunately, their shortened forms do not rhyme and so they do not matter.
What can I expect from this blog? - amateur photography using old cameras, I guess. I'll say some nonsense below each photo but you're free to ignore it. I don't plan on reblogging anything here, so don't expect that. I am the star of this blog. me me me. I tend towards finding weird buildings/architecture, "liminal spaces", sunsets, and generally trying to see how well I can make a photo look like a blender render in a Kane pixels video. don't expect any consistency, though. the medium will remain the same but the vibes will absolutely fluctuate with my mood. I'll try and tag things correctly if it's off putting.
Are you a cool person? - I tend to be! I don't want this place to be alienating for anybody but assholes who don't deserve to see the stuff I do. being a tumblr blog, I follow a lot of the standard stuff. jerks are not welcome and I'm not gonna give you the pleasure of an argument if you do turn your head round these parts.
who are you? - trans pan girl. takes pictures. listens to Femtanyl. much unlike Peter Parker.
My Cameras
Mavica FD-7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
released in 1997, this was the second of Sony's "Digital Mavica" line of cameras. it records photos of around 50Kbs in size to a standard 3 1/2" floppy disk. it has some standard features like a manual focus wheel, 10x optical zoom, and exposure control. I haven't found a strict source but I believe this camera is less than one megapixel. I actually have a few different Mavica cameras (a fd-71/75/83/85/87 and a cd-1000) but they aren't different from the fd-7 enough to justify being used often. I'll make note on individual posts if I use 'em at all.
Kodak DC220
Tumblr media Tumblr media
released in 1999, with a quality of exactly one megapixel the DC 220 is a weird little thing. it has custom software, connects to a computer via com ports with a transfer speed of ~11,000 bit/s. (roughly 30-60 seconds per photo in my experience) you can add custom text to your photos in the cameras built in software, and attach custom audio to each photo. it is a pain in the butt to get working, but it's quirks make it worth the frustration.
Olympus E-10
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
made in 2000 with a quality of a whopping four megapixels, the Olympus E-10 is the newest addition to my collection, and possibly the nicest camera I'll ever own. it's a fixed lens DSLR camera capable of 4x zoom, you can easily adjust the aperture and exposure on the fly, it's photos tend to be a whole 100kb in size (1/10th of a megabyte!) and to be entirely honest I have no idea how to use it. but I will eventually!
My Computer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I try to use all era-appropriate tech to transfer photos and do any edits, this is the computer I do all that processing on! its a Dell Optiplex gx1- the daddy of pretty much any computer used in public schools (Chromebooks don't count) It's got a Pentium 3 CPU clocking at 500MHz, 512mb ram, running windows ME. it has all the original Kodak DC220 software installed, and I can't really access the Kodak's photos any other way. I've also got a few other weird bits attached to it -an HP sketch pro cad tablet and an external data cartridge SCSI device. both work, but I don't really bother to use them, they just look neat.
that's about it. have a good one! thanks for reading this all, if you did.

Wheeze, here we are at long last before I have to go into College/Life lockdown again. You won't believe how much can happen in a month and the huge projects that lie ahead, but anyways! - It's cool how you have a PHD in Silver Handling. The closest acronym I could get for that was calling it a Psy.D (precarious Silver yeeting doctorate LOL) anyways you're so right, good analytic potential AND its interesting that it's him being Giovanni's son that you point out. I like that bit too, and I'd love to hear what about it makes it so dope to you :D - Twitter is the trenches </3 glad you like it here more :3 tumblr is THE place for neurodivergent folks like us and HARD AGREE on reading game dialogue. its my favorite lore hunting technique. I cannot fight Gyms until every inch of that city has been explored. - Literally bouncing up at down at the mental imagery of Leaf sitting at a blocky computer with Bill. I can just vaguellyyyy reach out to that era through memory, of idk, images, did I ever see them in person? in dreams? all I know is that even in the early 20s the age of dial-up phones wasn't instantly forgotten. maybe at someone's house. but there is SO much 90s to project there and it can be so enjoyable. nostalgia + growing up + that one era that is more romanticized in retro aesthetic and the social culture bc that's how the neighbors eldest daughters grew up and how do we, in modern times, achieve that? - if it's controversial, nobody's yapping about it when it comes to other characters lol. Leaf is pretty consistent if you keep an open mind so taking from other media 100% makes sense. I do it too :P oooh Silver and Leaf meeting on 5 island I love that!! aw man, with the Rocket base and that Scientist I'm just full of giggling here. Pff, Archer is going to get his butt kicked by the boss's son's friend HA tfw the same kids you see running around take down TR - oh I like how you bring the environment and economy into it, solid reasoning for moving + Pallet connects to the ocean that leads to Cinnabar, no? but yeah :D great customer base, little homey place but close to Viridian and the Indigo Plateau as well, plenty of people stopping by! omg Leaf coming from the hair sprouts 😭 oh that's clever I like it! - really enamored with the Bill + Leaf aspects of your story, it's just really speaking to some deep corner of my soul's memory. im so stoked somebody else likes this haha my Leaf is a bit more politically motivated (at least in one universe lol, bc it's the anime which is an utter disaster and she wants to be Champion to clean house and heal the economy) but also someone oughta do something bc Lance is working like 5 different jobs 😭 also, I can imagine with most of your HCs centered around character relationships they might feel like a hard sell compared to cold facts and I 100% feel you. so much of my fic is just character dynamics nobody else would get it LOL. but I'm honored you have so much you'd want to yap about it. fully encourage and love yapisodes - I looked at your Silver post and you said it's only if you're playing as Red but good news, Scientist Gideon STILL asks that if you play as Leaf. He says "Giovanni's kid" not his son :D - at the time you asked that, I was writing 6.1k of a chapter for another fandom, but lately I've had Leaf on the brain again and rlly want to get a solid outline for that series going. <-- the kind of yapping better suited for DMs lol. yess, love seeing how the Pokemon world is connected in media. utterly obsessed with Gen/Evo Specials, you can imagine the cheering when Silver's episode dropped 7 years ago he's so <3 <3 <3 if you like Silver + Leaf sibs then you feel like someone I can smuggle into Dad Lance city that doesn't leave her out, but hey. oldest daughter problems maybe if we incorporate the tendency to focus on Kris/Lyra/Ethan and thanks to Masters, LILLIE?!?!? <-- understand Johto kids but LILLIE???? and every time I see Lance with Red/Blue I'm like "aight, so I gotta fill this vacancy myself"
helllloooo first of all i want to say sorry for taking so long to get to this😭 my last couple months have been a mess and i’ve been dealing with annoying health issues (in every way). i apologise if this reply isn’t as long or thorough as usual🤧
i think what i like about the silver giovanni connection so much is how well it connects johto + kanto story wise. johto to me is still a very undeveloped and lowkey forgotten region unfortunately but silvers character is easily the shining part of the region. i also think it’s cool how he’s also connected to red (or leaf) due to the whole reason giovanni abandoning him being because of red/leaf’s defeat of team rocket, ultimately crushing his ego lol - just one big butterfly effect that i thoroughly enjoy :p and as stated in my post, i like despite how hard he tried not to be, silver was quite similar to his dad until the events of the the johto story. seeing his growth makes me so happy 🤧🤧🤧✨
lmao talking of reading game dialogue … the offical pokemon twitter account made this post for fathers day (i think…? my fathers day isn’t till september 🤷🏻‍♀️)
Tumblr media
and the amount of people in the comments literally suprised gave me a stroke like??? lacey being clays daughter is explicitly stated LOL pokemon fans never cease to amaze me 😭😭😭
you’ve really got me thinking about kantrio in the 90s now LOL. i can see them all tryna message eachother on some aol type site and someone’s dial up cutting totally ruining their convos - most likely blue cause daisy wants to talk on the phone to bill or something … hmmm… ideas are brewing!!!! actually to sound old my family had dial up till 2009… insane😭😭 i used to get so mad at my mumma using the phone cause i just wanted to play club penguin LOL - oh and thx u for the compliment on the leaf + bill dynamic <3 bill is one of those random ass side characters that still is so iconic … i have so many hc’s for him too LOL no character can escape my headcanons
oh and i am the minister at the dad lance church!!! i’ve always seen him as not just a mentor to silver but the other johto kids and definitely the kanto trio before they grew up - that saying i still think as adults they turn to him alot since … half of them don’t have dads (both in canon and my hc LOL). i think as adults, the kantrio definitely have a more friend based relationship with him but as kids he definitely helped them through the spotlight that was put on them at such a young age.
ehghhh i very much apologise for this reply, my brain feels very disconnected from my body today and i feel like this hot mess of a reply shows LOL. again, i really apologise for the late reply. i wish you the best of luck with ur studies and writing ✨✨✨🩷🩷🩷

Hi hi!!
So recently I've gotten just a tiny amount of attention recently (which is so awesome cool yippee!) And I've decided to make a little about/get to know me type post so that way I feel a little bit more transparent and you guys get to know me a little better!
Introduction
So as everyone knows my name is Clover! But I have two other names too, Clementine and Dustin. I don't have a preference for these names at all but if you had to ask me which one was my favorite I'd have to choose Clementine lol. But no matter what you can call me any of those names!
I am 18 years old (though everyone both online and irl automatically assume I'm in my 20's I have no idea how and why I'm literally the silliest creature) and my pronouns are they/she, again I don't have a preference to which pronoun is used so feel free to pick one
A little bit more about me
I know I don't have to share this but I feel since my dms are open to anyone it should be at least shared! I have ADHD and Autism, it sometimes does make talking a little bit harder, as sometimes i will forget to respond and if I do just message me again, I promise you're not bothering I'm just forgetful. I also do tend to have a "wait your turn to talk" issue (which has improved greatly but still there lol) but that goes more so for like a VC type deal (which I am open to those too)
Secondly, I don't have much as far as DNI (other than the basics like if you're an asshole, racist, any kind of hateful phobic yahda yahda) but if you are 15 or below please do not interact with me personally (I would also advise to not interact with my page). The only trigger I have is real world pregnancy stuff, anything that has to do with irl pregnancy I really don't want to hear it, it makes me feel uncomfortable. I would also appreciate it if you use tone indicators, if you don't that's fine and dandy but sometimes i will ask if something is a joke or sarcasm.
My hobbies
Here's some things I like to do!
Drawing (big one, digital and traditional)
Playing Video games (I'll get to what my favorites are)
Writing(I'm still working on this, I'm really bad at it but I like writing characters, talking about scenarios, and sometimes rp)
Programing(I'm still majorly learning how to do this but I have a huge interest in it)
Here's some more things I'm into! Or Special interest!
Air planes
Computers
Retro technology
Biology
Plant biology
Botany
Bugs
Flowers
Some media I'm into (Video games and Shows etc etc)
Splatoon 3
Splatoon 2
SSBU

The FMA movie (I forgot the name lol)
Wall e (the most movie ever)
Star wars (unfortunately)/j
I can't remember every thing I'm into, but you can always bring up stuff in conversation or if I don't know a piece of media I would love to learn more about it!
So I think this is about it, I would love talk to everyone sometime! I'm really open to making new friends n stuff and I would even love it more talking about those medias/ ocs ^ ^!!!!!!
I'm also open to playing games with people too! My switch friend code is
SW-6769-7884-8275
And my xbox gamer tag is CL0V34 K1DD with a halo profile picture!
I hope I can talk and meet everyone soon!!

Pixel art about videogame rings of medusa 2 for system amiga. This is some role playing game, about dungeons and turn based movement in labyrinths.
But this is my variation. Retro. Big pixelization. Big pixels, valuable part for graphic style. Maybe, it is even in direction of bard’s tale, or something like Commodore 64 or some 8 bit computer of 80s. If they can run something similar.
It is turn based game about dungeons. And walking the labyrinths. At the right it is a map of opened labyrinth. With pictograms of different colors. Enemies and treasures are shown there. And some valuable elements. At the bottom there is compass and buttons for movement. And also you have four heroes with life bar and magic strength. I don’t draw a portraits now. And at the left you can see a screen about what you see. First person view. Here we have field and sky.
This is fantasy turn based role playing game. Personally, I am fan of Might and Magic 6. And I also watched a lot Might and Magic 3 Isles of Terra. Also add point of interest to the Conan the Barbarian stories. Black magic, ancient world, goblins and orcs. Horsemans from kingdoms, wild barbarians, warlocks, necromants. And I will not add elves. And gnomes.
Game is like walking the labyrinths. 4 heroes. Simple role playing system. Atack with cold weapon, like sword or axe. Atack with magic, with use of selected spell. Menu. All these elements are required. And it will be also a story screens. Story with fantasy type.

Learning Music Log - Day 1:
I am someone that has never played an instrument, never been part of band, never even known how to start. For the past year I’ve been fascinated with Lo-Fi music, so I figured I’d try making some myself. Again, with no experience in anything myself, I figured I’d need some tools to make electronic music. An old friend of mine from high school had some songs signed and sold through Beatport, and I remember him using FL Studio at home. Just messing around with the tools was interesting to watch, but the interface and process always intimidated me.
Another artist I follow on my art blog, Artem Solop, is also big into making his own electronic music and beats. Although I do not know him personally, I have always liked his style. The unique thing about his method, is that he utilizes his Nintendo DS and Switch as instruments. Synths, Compressors, and Drum Machines have always intrigued me, but I could never tell one thing from the other, and here was this guy using them from his Nintendo consoles to make something sounds good. Cables routed from one system to another – how does he do it?
I figured I’d plunge in headfirst – well, as “headfirst” as I could while still adhering to baby steps…I know the hobby can be expensive if left unchecked.
Tumblr media
I bought KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch about 2 weeks ago to start this journey – an inexpensive grab through Amazon for just 30$. I have no idea what it is, but it’s what Artem seems to use in his videos. The tool is described as such:
-Robust music composition/production tools in a compact cartridge
-Simple to use and easy to understand; anyone can create music anywhere and everywhere
-16 different synthesizer and drum machine gadgets with additional DLC gadgets available
-Gadgets have retro-inspired tactile control knobs that you can turn by rotating the Joy-Con controllers
And to be honest, it did not disappoint. It was a great way to wrap my mind around the synths, tracks, and “scenes” as they are laid out in the simple to use interface. I was determined to begin this journey in a self-taught, but organized manner. I had googled a few things before starting anything:
1. Simple music theory – I had no idea that notes/scales determine how well something sounds. A lot of you may think that that’s obvious, but again, my music knowledge started in 4th grade with a mandatory recorder recital and ended with the 5 colors on the guitar hero guitar. At the most basic level, I learned that scales could be set (C Major, A minor, etc.) and most tools used to create music (a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short) had a setting to allow “helpers” that would highlight keys in any given scale. From there on, I figured out that experimenting and playing randomly sounded better if I followed the scale guidelines.
2. How different chords on a piano/keyboard evoke different emotions depending on what scale you’re in. Major chord happy. Minor chord sad.
3. After talking to my fiancé (a former band geek that played flute!) I also learned that the concept of “chords” did not apply to the flute, so I also realized how different instruments were from one another…
Aside from those few things, I didn’t really look into anything else before attempting to ‘craft’ a song on the Switch.
Immediately, I could tell that the different synth gadgets varied and specialized in different things. The Marseille gadget had some great piano, electric piano, and orchestral instrument presets; the Helsinki gadget was great at ambient/relaxing sounds; the London drum gadget was great atwell…drum sounds and beats! Each of the city inspired gadgets brought something unique to the table. The Switch’s controls were intuitive. Copying and pasting, moving notes, playing tracks vs. just playing scenes was something that I was able to pick up in around 30 minutes without even ‘sniffing’ the user guide. By messing around I actually learned more about notes, half beats, and chord progressions all on my own.
Before I knew it, I had crafted a song that was about 3 minutes long. Deep, ambient intro, catchy simple melody, and the typical ‘lo-fi’ drums set to 79 BPM. I was impressed at how good it sounded. I knew there were things I was messing up, or could probably do better, but I was still proud of it.
Tumblr media
Hopping on to YouTube I found a TON of tutorials covering music theory, lo-fi beat making lessons, “dos and don’ts”, best plugins for DAWs and more. Before long, I invested in an AKAI Professional MPK Mini Play USB MIDI Keyboard controller (hastily, as it seems like the Arturia Minilab might have been a better grab? Lmk), got set up with a subscription to Melodics HQ to learn the basics of playing a keyboard, and installed FL Studio on my computer. After a week of using the Korg Gadget on Switch, I found that FL Studio had a bunch of the same principals in its interface, and I found myself digging in with minimal research into how to use the tool.
By purchasing the Korg Gadgets online, I was able to continue using the same tools I was already familiar with on the Switch inside of FL Studio’s more robust interface.
I was able to recreate the song I made on the Switch in FL Studio. This was a great way to familiarize myself with the tool in an almost step-by-step tutorial I had already made for myself.
After I had gotten a grip with using FL Studio at a basic level, I decided to try mirroring some Lo-fi beat YouTube tutorial videos. To my surprise, I found myself not really liking the final product, even after following the instructor’s guidelines. I don’t think I am a fan of “oh you NEED to do this and this for it to be a good song”. I do think that a basic understanding of music theory is key before even starting, but I don’t know how I feel about new and upcoming musicians following strict rules about how something should sound when it’s literally an art form used for expression and fun.
I was happier with the first song I made just messing around on my Switch than the song I made trying to emulate a Lo-fi beat guided by a professional producer on YouTube… and it got me thinking…I think Giorgio Moroder was right in that one Daft Punk song:
“Once you free your mind about a concept of
Harmony and of music being correct
You can do whatever you want
So nobody told me what to do
And there was no preconception of what to do”
I’m looking forward to learning more – after all, it’s only been a few days!

ESC SF2
Going to add those “read more” breaks when I can edit this on a computer.
[EDIT]
San Marino Totally feels like something you’d see on an awards show but with tons of pyro. Maybe the most polished entry from San Marino. Taking advantage of the pre-recorded backing vocals.
Estonia This is boring. I’m not an anti-ballad person, BTW. I don’t like video inserts.
Czech Republic It’s like everything I hated about this song got hidden. I still don’t like the song though.
Greece Not fond of these types of presentations. Also, I missed a lot of this because my living room is doubling as someone else’s office right now so I’m a little bit pissed off.
Austria I know this guy’s had a rough year. This song is appropriately sad. A lot better live.
Poland Oh, one of those throwback retro songs. Another song that seems to be taking advantage of prerecorded backing vocals. Very mid-80s sound with early 90s aesthetic. Just sort of the same thing over and over though.
Moldova More of this aesthetic — like a lot of the staging has been inspired by screensavers. Fun but blending in.
Iceland Poor pre-recorded iceland. Every ESC fan weeping or mad. Hmm... hmm... There’s a part of me that suspects that iceland would win just because of Dadi’s Internet coolness factor but they’re totally legit as is.
Serbia Nice, singing in their own language. It’s not just them but I’m not a fan of a lot of the black costumes this year. Pretty good for just the three of them and some wind machines. Lots of energy.
Georgia Feels like a mood song on an independent movie that plays during the movie. He sounds out of tune in parts, unfortunately. I mean, he’s probably not getting out of this semi but I actually like it.
Albania Singing in their own language! Weird to get solo singers in row with totally different songs.
Portugal Taking throwback very seriously. B&W and a 3:4 ratio. It could be the drugs I’m on but everything is working for me today so far. I’m really digging that light screen. Wow, that song went fast...which I was not expecting from Portugal.
Helena Paparizou interview.
Bulgaria This is very well put together. Is she singing the right words though? (I’ve only heard this song once before today.)
Finland Ahhhh, very welcome change of pace here with rock. Seems like the purpose of this song is just to be very loud and use a lot of pyro.
Latvia More pagan/witchy stuff! Totally not my jam though. I like that they’re not dressed in head-to-toe black. You know, this song feels like you took a bunch of the other songs, shoved them in a blender, and funkified it.
Switzerland I’d have staged that differently. As in “simpler.” Because the vocals do a lot of the work. It’s like throwing something on top of the vocals that you don’t need.
Denmark Back to the 80s. Eurovision of the 80s. I mean, wasn’t it the last time the Dutch won? Could play it off as a tribute to the last time the Dutch hosted or something. Their energies are different. Not sure if that’s on purpose. And then it feels very repetitive in the last 30.
Only really concerned about Iceland getting through. Won’t feel like I’ll suffer during the Grand Final if any of my least favorites make it through (but would probably consider them for a snack or bathroom break).
Maybe I’m just very happy to have the ESC back that I’m not as critical.
I’m not really an interpretative dance person. AND THERE IS THE DUTCH TRIBUTE TO BICYCLES! LOL
I don’t have the ESC app currently installed at this moment but will for the GF so I could get the background info and find out what the lyrics are for some of these songs.
Oh, “In Your Eyes.” I’m just all “Better the Devil.”
I guess we know which former winners will be performing on Saturday.
Not sure about this particular ESC Tutorial.
Oh, awkward delegation repartee! Actually, not awkward by ESC standards.
France No one could dispute that that’s the French song.
UK I always feel like I have to judge the UK as if they were a Sweden. Like “How well would this song do if Sweden sent it?”
Spain Ahhhhhhh. Hmm, last year’s song was better. Not like Spain knows how to stage a song.
“Martin Osterdahl” is not as fun to say as “Jon Ola Sand.”
Albania (good on you singing in your own language), Serbia (same), Bulgaria, Moldova, Portugal!!!, Iceland (most obs!), San Marino, Switzerland, Greece (I always wonder about them when Cyprus isn’t in the same SF), Finland (which I expected).
I think the other SF might have been more interesting but this one was good too.
I will be shocked if Italy, Iceland and Ukraine don’t make the Top 5 on Saturday. I also will rage if somehow Sweden ends up with the most jury votes again.

could u recommend some steam horror games!! (specifically retro indie games)
yeah of course! I can’t remember 100% all of these games, but many of them contain common triggers (particularly body horror, suicide, and sexual assault)  so please be aware of that!! Also, because a lot of these are 15+ years old, they contain racism and homophobia typical of older content, unfortunately.
-The Penumbra Collector’s pack ($9.99, 2007) comes with Black Plague and Overture, two of my all time favorite horror games. Similar to Amnesia, just a very back-to-basics survival horror game. Has some of my personal favorite twists and scares!
-The Still Life pack ($14.99, 2002) is a series of point and click horror games about solving murders. The games themselves are far from perfect, but they have a great vibe and atmosphere.
-World of Horror ($14.99, 2019) is a game done in the style of retro horror manga. It’s gorgeous and super fun, but still in early access! It feels like you’re walking around a Junji Ito manga :’)
-The Witch’s House (free for lq ver, $14.99 for hq ver, 2012) is a brilliant RPG horror game done in the style of many, much older horror rpgs. Steam also has some other classic horror RPGs that I’d definitely check out, as well!
-Corpse Party ($14.99, 2016 rerelease of 1996 game). I know I mention this one on every list but it’s one of my all time favorites!! It’s a retro horror rpg with some really genuinely disturbing and thought-provoking content.
-Misao Definitive Edition ($4.99, 2011) A retro-styled horror RPG that has some interesting twists. A shorter version of the game is also offered for free.
-Condemned:Criminal Origins ($14.95, 2006) I haven’t played this one yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. A horror shooter game where you solve supernatural murders.
-Harvester ($5.99, 1996) “The most violent adventure game of all time” is kind of an oversell, haha, but it lives up to that title in some ways!! It’s a great classic horror/gore game, especially if you’re into vintage games.
-Saya No Uta: Song of Saya ($14.99, 2019 rerelease of 2003 game) is known as one of the darkest mainstream visual novels. It’s about a student who begins to see everything as flesh and gore, except for a beautiful monster named Saya.
-I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream ($5.99, 1995) Is a tale about outsmarting an evil computer that utilizes a lot of psychological concepts. It’s an awesome game that I’d strongly recommend.
-Togainu No Chi: Lost Blood ($14.99, 2020 expanded release of 2005 game) Another visual novel known for its extremely dark content, togainu no chi is an “erotic” horror story about a young man surviving in the wasteland left of Japan after WWIII. Also, I want to warn that this game contains EXTREMELY graphic depictions of sexual assault, and includes many topics that are often seen as too intense (even for the horror genre), so please be wary going into this game.
Of course, Steam also has some classics like Resident Evil, FEAR, The Crooked Man, etc.! I didn’t include those, just in case you’d already been through them! I hope that helps! <3

Love is like oxygen! Love is a many-splendored thing! Love lifts us up where we belong! All you need is love! Can you guess who my new favorite oc is? Xanthe! My goofy, romantic, hypochondriac, anxious-wreck of a tech nerd. She's spent most of her life online, scared to step out of her own head and experience the 'outside world' As a result, she's taking a little extra time to figure out exactly who she is right now... But I know who she is (: More info under the cut
Xanthe is a lesbian, but she is scared of that fact and feels predatory for even LOOKING at girls But she's anything but... she's a touch-starved emo kid who longs to have someone to snuggle and drink tea with When she DOES venture out, it's usually with a posse of (in her opinion) more interesting girls who will draw attention away from her. Xanthe met ALL these girls through another oc of mine, Rae, who she has a HUGE crush on but insists she only has friend-feelings for. Rae reached out to Xanthe after trolling through some student directories at her local college and realizing she was the ONLY STUDENT that Rae hadn't met! Rae, being the bubbly gal she is, managed to get Xanthe's email, shot her a message, and the two bonded over their mutual love of Tamagotchi. Rae added her to a few messenger apps, introduced her to some friends, and tries to facilitate conversations when Xanthe is emotionally up for it. Xanthe's hobbies include: ♦ Computer programming ♦ Rewatching the same 3 movies over and over nonstop ♦ Composing retro/simpson/vapor wave (she's not good... yet) ♦ Color-coordinating and re-organizing her extensive figurine collection ♦ Playing video games, but nothing newer than the mid-90's Xanthe's likes/dislikes are: ♥ Virtual pets x Spicy food ♥ 80's alternative music x Summer ♥ Rain/fog/snow x Doctors/hospitals ♥ Collectibles of ANY. KIND. x D&D (too social) ♥ Musicals x Iced coffee Fun facts: ♦ She is severely anemic--one of the few things she's actually been diagnosed of  ♦ Xanthe identifies as asexual, but will eventually realize she isn't really ace ♦ Most of her income comes from her programming hobby. She fixes codes for several indie developers and does some shady shit on the side to make ends meet ♦ She moved to the opposite side of the country to get away from her parents because she wanted to branch out and become a FREE, INDEPENDENT PERSON... but just ended up eating a lot of ramen alone in her apartment instead ♦ Xanthe also buys, repaints and resells collectible figurines! She loves anything old and has a LOT of time to figure out how to do it well I might do some more of these little oc bio thingies. Lemme know if you'd like to see!

I'm going to pretend @overlyelegantstranger tagged me... 1. Nickname: Mouse is my longstanding online nickname, and for a bit less, DT (for Darth Tenebrous, actually, given my URL) ...actually I spelled Adrien the way I did because I've an OC who shortens her (different) name to "Ien", but I haven't found it convenient to introduce, nor convinced myself it refers to me. 2. Zodiac sign: I'm supposedly a Taurus; actually the sun was in Aries at my birth, and while those often suit me in tumblr astrology, I resent the assigned nature of it all so uh... also no. 3. Height: Five four, maybe five foot five if I'm lucky and standing particularly straight 4. Hogwarts house: Mostly Ravenclaw, with some Slytherin sympathies and a newfound appreciation for Hufflepuff. I will actively resent Gryffindor colors unless you tell me they're actually Shuos (even though I would probably be a Nirai, if anything, in the hexarchate. But I love certain of my foxes.) and/or somehow Sith. 5. Last thing I googled: "Nebuchadnezzar poisoning", because @piermanwalter reminded me of an anecdote in The Disappearing Spoon about how the eating grass thing might have been prompted by inadvertent poisoning. I didn't remember which element; turns out it's lead AND antimony. 6. Favourite musicians: Idk; Over the Rhine are up there, and lately The Mountain Goats. I've also seen Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura in concert, so I suppose they're up there. Vienna Teng, Regina Spektor... This is an incomplete list. 7. Song stuck in my head: the phrasing of this question keeps putting some song I don't even really know that has "over my head, over my head" in it? But really it's OTR's "And Can It Ever Be?", with which I am a little obsessed anew, because: "This night is so dark/this night is silence, and very little fear/tell me that this welcome peace/isn't dancing with the ghost of future tears" 8. Following now: four hundred ish? I'm going to check and come back and edit. The vast majority of whom are inactive and/or not personal blogs. 9. Followers: I think this is around 500, although I am/may be long overdue for a purge of spam/porn blogs 10. Do I get asks: Mostly only when I ask for them. But occasionally. 11. Amount of sleep: I gravitate towards about 8 hours. I am practically nonfunctional normally on much less than 6, and lately, thanks to um... anxiety, even getting by on 6 is difficult. 12. Lucky number: ...in some ways π, in some ways e 13. What I’m wearing: Star Trek ~lounge pants I made from Enterprise/"Star Trek" print fabric, and an oversized t-shirt I got when I participated in a litter cleanup 14. Dream job: uhhh something involving as many as possible of: sci-comm, math or programming tasks, a result helpful to people, and maybe a bit of domestic travel now and again?? Idk, I seem to change my mind on this frequently and don't really have a good or set idea. 15. Dream trip: I think the idea I'm most into at the moment is one day, hoping the present situation doesn't actually end service for good, is riding the uh "Empire Builder" Amtrak route through the northern US. Aside from that, I recently went to West Virginia and western Pennsylvania and would enjoy going back and also I am (except for quarantine concerns) almost always up for a road trip to Michigan. 16. Favourite food: this is not something I am good at deciding. There are too many good ones. Something, such as I had for dinner, involving potatoes, corn tortillas, and some peppers and tomatoes (or tomatillos in something else) and cheese as seasoning is my idea of great comfort food. I appreciate a good meatloaf but I also really don't mind eating vegetarian meals on a regular basis, given they're something I like. 17. Instruments: um. I can kinda play a few pieces, with idiosyncratic timing, on keyboard/piano and that's about it. I don't fluently read music though I might be able to work through something in treble clef. I recently acquired a cheap ukulele but I am struggling with tuning it, or understanding how it's used in songs or... 18. Languages: rusty, at best I was almost capable of halting conversation, German and Spanish. I have the Duolingo Latin tree but I don't think it's um... that extensive. I have learned a little Russian and beyond that just... too many interests, without much time being devoted to any of them. 19. Favourite song: I'm into "And Can It Ever Be?" anew, as I said above; also more recently "Your Honor" and "Ghost of Corporate Future" off Soviet Kitsch (aand, a bit awkwardly, "Hotel Song"). "You Or Your Memory" "Dance Music" "This Year" and "Up the Wolves" (which is to say that basically the larger part of my album rotation lately is Soviet Kitsch, The Sunset Tree, and Till We Have Faces)... 20. Random fact: I have been watching retro computer repair videos lately (Adrian's Digital Basement esp) and they've made me kinda want to learn to solder. Though I'm not sure whether I'll look into this before we're past current events or not. (Probably I'd start with some of the kits from Evil Mad Scientist Labs) 21. Aesthetic Standing in a broad-shouldered greatcoat surveying a wintry landscape, perhaps feeling powerful, but with a note of melancholy and humility to it. Welcoming a dear friend in, pet in arms, with an array of beautiful if homely chopped vegetables and prepared ingredients inside waiting to be cooked up. A hobbit math professor relaying an algebra theorem or a physics application. Walking near a wetland in a flannel, among the trees and wildlife.

Fornax Void Update Spring 2019
Hey everyone,
In recent months I may have seemed kind of inactive, which led to a few requests about what I'm up to. I thought I might write a little update on what is going on:
For the most part I'm working on cleaning up my Album 'Cyberspace Database'. As I plan to release the Album on physical media this year (coupled with new videos), I want to refresh the mixes, and create consistent masters of all the tracks. This created the need to migrate my DAW to a computer with higher performance.
Making archival backups of all the data, migrating DAW to computer with more performance, upgrading Operating System, getting latest Cubase etc.
This took some time and the according purchases (HDDs, SSDs, Cubase License etc.) created Budget problems. I started doing more commissions and decided to sell all hardware synths except a handful of favorites - generally reducing clutter in my workspace, by selling stuff. This resulted in additional logistical, and administrational efforts: sampling all the synths, especially recording samples of important personal patches, creating online auctions, packing up things and hauling them to the post office etc. This process is not yet finished and will take up a couple more weeks.
Basically, I'm cleaning up and refreshing things, to wrap up my work of the last few years in a well rounded way.
For fun, I created a list of the synths I sold or kept, with statements on why and mentions of a couple of tracks they were used on:
Tumblr media
Kept:
Roland JV-2080 – While I got to recap all the upgrade cards of this thing, the device is extremely convenient to program, full of sounds I love to create patches with and 8 * multi-timbral. Used on Borlando Loom, Cyberspace Database and many other tracks.
Akai S3000XL – One of the classic, defining samplers of the 90s. Easy to use, multi-timbral, 32-voice polyphony. Used on Void Gate Access Software and Void Gate Panorama Station.
Korg WaveStation A/D – Lots of waveforms, multi-timbral. The unorthodox sound engine and the menu design make it a bit of a headache to program. Despite the large display, accessing it's capabilities is time consuming. The menu has some graphic capabilities beyond text, but it is not as intuitive feeling as the menus of the JV-2080 or the S3000XL. Used on Cyborg Samurai Miyamoto, Soyokaze Suteshon 199X, Void Gate Panorama Station and other tracks.
Yamaha PSS-480 – My first synth, I got as a kid. Also one of my favorite FM synths. Programmable 2-OP FM with MIDI. Used on Void Gate Access Software, Void Gate Panorama Station and other tracks.
Reckless Experimentation Audio LLC YM3812 – Like an Adlib Soundcard in a box, but better. Great, programmable, multi-timbral FM synth module with MIDI, based on the legendary OPL2 chip. Used on: Topographic Multiplexer and other tracks.
Commodore 64 + MSSIAH Cartridge – great 3-part / 3-voice synth and wave player / sampler software for the C64. Used on Offshore Network Vertex, Void Gate Access Software, Hexadecimal Love Letters and other tracks.
Wayfar MIDI NES Cartridge – Interesting thing. Don't use it much, but doesn't take up much space. Used on: Void Gate Access Software
Tumblr media
Sold:
Roland D-05 – Generally liked this synths sound, but its inconvenient to program, filters don't work on PCM waveforms, lacks multi-timbrality and no proper outputs. Used on Super Aliasing and other tracks.
Roland TB-03 – Sounds pretty nice, easy to program, but lacks proper outputs. I used this as a harp-like instrument in the end of Void Gate Access Software.
Akai S1000 – Wonderful sounding sampler, but is 1U bigger, has less RAM, half the polyphony probably sells better than the than S3000XL. Used on Void Gate Access Software and Void Gate Panorama Station.
Oberheim Xpander – A really nice instrument, I spent lot of time with, but always made me feel uneasy owning. Expensive, old, analog synths always come with the risk that something breaks. Used on: Ancient Data Tapes, Oberheim Taxi Shagnhai Xpander, Server Room Love Letters,  Affinity, Infinity, Protorezoic Ocean, Hexadecimal Love Letters, Offshore Network Vertex, Cyborg Samurai Miyamoto, and many more tracks.
Korg M1R – A great sounding, multi-timbral classic, but while not too complicated, still inconvenient to program, because of it's small display. Also, the Plugin version of it, sounds really good, comes with a great sound library that is well-structured and is more convenient to program. Used on Offshore Network Vertex and a few other tracks but more of the M1 sounds on the album actually stem from the M1 Legacy Plugin.
Korg Volca Beats – Cool device, easy to use, but lacks proper outputs. Used on Offshore Network Vertex and Void Gate Access Software.
Korg Poly 800 II – One of my first hardware synths. Found this for cheap in a thrift-store almost a decade ago. Nice retro sounds. Not pleasant to program, chewy buttons, archaic digital menu. My album Tomes of Erebus was for big parts made on this one. Also used on Void gate Access Software and other tracks.
Casio CZ-5000 – Never really used much but the same, particular self-made patch on this synth (now thoroughly sampled). Used on Cyborg Samurai Miyamoto and a few other tracks.
Yamaha PSR-47 – Non-programmable Keyboard with lots of presets, some of them good. Has MIDI. Used on Screensaver Library. Used on Offshore Network Vertex and other tracks.
Yamaha PSR-60 – Not so fun, non-programmable FM based keyboard thing with MIDI. Used on Screensaver Library.
Yamaha Reface DX – Great sounding 4-OP FM synth, easy to program, proper MIDI and outputs, good keyboard, but that part of the menu is solved with touch controls always annoyed me. Used on Void Gate Access Software, Void Gate Panorama Station and other tracks.
Yamaha Reface CS – Interesting synth, proper outputs and MIDI, lots of sound capabilities, slightly too clean sounding. Sounded great when sampled through Akai S1000. Used on Hexadecimal Love Letters and some other tracks.
Yamaha DX21 – Nice 4-OP FM synth from the era of the DX7. In theory an easy synth, but the small, non-backlit display and the very archaic menu qualities make it annoying to program. Main synth on Wintermute and Personal System/2. Used on a few other tracks too.
Yamaha FB-01 – Interesting multi-timbral FM synth. Patches can not be programmed on-device and is ultimately too generic sounding to keep, compared to YM3812 or PSS-480. Used on Wintermute, Voidnet Online Service Provider and other tracks.
Yamaha TG33 – Interesting synth. Similar to the Roland D-05 / D-50 but FM / PCM based. Kinda headache inducing menus. When weighing up accessibility to sound-capabilities it lost out. Used on: Void Gate Access Software and a few other tracks.
Arturia Miniburte – Great monophonic analog synth. Nice for deep sounds. Used on many tracks. Didn't really fit into the concept of my next setup. Used on Offshore Network Vertex, Void Gate Access Software, Void Gate Panorama Station, Hexadecimal Love Letters and other tracks.
Waldorf Rocket – Interesting synth. Mostly used it for filtering external signals through it's analog filter. Used on: Illustrated History of Nature, Voidnet Online Service Provider, Void Gate Panorama Station and other tracks.
Roland U-110 – PCM sound module. Some nice sounds. Used on PCM Sound Module U-110 and some other tracks.
Conclusion: Most synths I'm keeping are digital, rack-mounted, multi-timbral, 90s devices or some kind of semi-unusual retro computing related thing, reducing the tools to a core-palette of things I really like, for future projects.
Well, that's it for now. An update on current Fornax Void activities. I hope there is some useful info in there for some of you. Will be back with more updates.
Best Regards, Fornax Void

hey ellie, i just wanted to thank you for your wonderful writing in these quarantine days--thank you for giving me something to read, to look forward to, to enjoy. but since i need a lot more to read and watch to make the quarantine tolerable, could you recommend some of your favorite fics/books/shows/movies?
thank you so much ! I am happy it’s giving you this sort of solace <3 I don’t know what sort of readings exactly you would like to be recommended, different things are relaxing for different people lol
personally, right now, after listening to the companion podcast first and getting hooked, I’m listening to the audiobook of Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow, which is about his investigation into Harvey Weinstein, the way powerful predators have been and are still enabled by the system, and the techniques deployed to silence the press. I really recommend it if you can stomach the dark subjects it adresses ; it’s awful but it’s really gripping, told in a very humane way and also strangely inspiring, since it’s also the tale of people (finally) standing up for themselves and each other and breaking the silence.
another thing to note is a lot of creators are putting free stuff online right now, like for instance this list of free comics compiled by Nerdist
another list of stories which might be cool right now, compelling enough to be distracting without being too dark either, off the top of my head :
- Pushing Daisies (series) quirky show about a necromancer who bakes pies and brings people back from the dead, incredible aesthetic, dark and cute together, perfect for escapism, only cancelled too soon, quality vibes
- Peggy Carter (series) : you don’t have to be a huge Marvel fan to enjoy this one. Again, amazing retro vibes, and there is something about Peggy’s solidity and classy stoic demeanour that I find myself going back to in times of turmoil. Made some questionable plot decisions but it’s a real comfort watch for me.
- Black Sails (series) Honestly Black Sails is one of the best series out there, it’s so underrated, the first season is schlocky, but it gets incredible from there, and also incredibly queer ; this is the series famous for putting into action tropes like ‘heterobaiting’ and ‘unbury your gays’, has two poly relationships, at least four queer MCs, and so much to say about the notion of storytelling and what it means to be a monster or civilized and it’s really riveting so, a good quarantine watch, at least you will be relieved that we live in a time with better hygiene standards, and also, that unlike the moment when the crew gets stuck in the dolldrums, you don’t have to wresle a shark to eat. Also, the fandom has some real quality fics, honestly, it’s worth digging into
- Legends of Tomorrow (series) : again, super queer, very dubious first season but worth pushing through, wacky time travelling show that is cleverer than it looks and is just one of the most fun things I have ever watched, it’s just pure joy, don’t have to think too much
- Halt and Catch Fire (series) again, very underrated (also can you tell I’m a huge Lee Pace fan) - started off like a Mad Men expy centered around a corporate antihero asshole, but evolved to be an incredible ensemble show centered around the creative partnership of two women. If you don’t mind computer related workplace drama, it’s really compelling
- What We Do in the Shadows (the Taika Waititi movie, haven’t checked the series yet) - honestly this movie makes me crylaugh everytime, it’s just brilliant. I’ve seen almost all of Taika’s movies and they’re all incredible, that perfect blend of humor with a darker underbelly, incredible
- In general if you haven’t seen any of those : the Lord of the Rings movies, Pirates of the Carribean, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Parks and Recreations, the Good Place
- Books wise, I would say the Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb always brings me a lot of peace, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman is a must read, and anything from the world of Riverside by Ellen Kushner, which is a fantasy world without magic but full of courtly intrigue, swordfights, chocolate trading and wayward actresses, and where being queer is totally nbd (it’s awesome)
- Non-fiction : I just finished Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost and it provides a lot of interesting ideas about how to deal with the unknown, uncertainty, etc. Anything by her is pretty awesome, I want to read Hope in the Dark next.
I’m probably going to watch a lot of movies that I’ve wanted to see for a while so keep tuned I might do more posts like these and if anyone else has some recommendations I’d love to hear them ! <3 stay safe everyone !

Chapter 6 - A Couple Of Vodka And Tonics
-
Thor knew from experience what damage staying inside for days on end could do for a person, so when Peter woke up in the morning, he told him to get dressed and get his shoes on. Peter did as he was told, and joined Thor by the front door when they were both ready to go.
“Where are we going?”
“I need a few things from a couple of shops, and they’re right near a game arcade. I thought you might enjoy that”
“Oh!” Peter said. “I haven’t been to an arcade for ages. Well, not here, at least. We go to them on holiday when we go to the beach. They’re kinda different though. Some of the games are similar, but not all of them”
“It gives you something to do if nothing else” Thor said. “Come along. We’ll walk and get breakfast on the way there”
“Ok” Peter said. “What kind of breakfast?”
“Well, what would you like?”
Peter thought about it while Thor locked the door and they went down the stairs onto the street. At first he really wasn’t sure, but then the more he thought about it...
“Bagels” Peter said. “I kinda fancy the ones we have at school, and I know I can’t have those. But there’s a whole bunch of places that sell bagels in town. I know you can just get one with cream cheese, and that’s a good thing. Especially if you get a coffee too”
“Do your parents let you drink coffee now?”
“Well, they do when I’m out. I don’t know why. I guess dad thinks a cappuccino or a latte or whatever is less coffee-like than the stuff he drinks. Or the instant stuff”
“An interesting take”
Peter shrugged. “I guess it is. I kinda just drink my chai tea, especially nowadays. I’ve kinda been in to it ever since daddy first introduced me to it. So that’s a pretty long time now”
“It is rather. My, it feels like almost a hundred years ago. It’s been a long decade”
Peter nodded slightly. “Dad’s gonna take me out for tea tonight. We’re not gonna be out too late, are we? Just he always gets to yours at seven, so...”
“We’ll be back in plenty of time for that, don’t you worry”
Peter breathed out, and nodded. “Good. I’d feel awful if we got back late and kept him waiting or something”
Thor rested a hand on the boys head. “Don’t you worry. I’ll make sure we’re back in time”
-
They went to the arcade first. Peter felt a little unsure at first, but he liked being with Thor, and he didn’t want to annoy him by changing his mind or being awkward. They had a little wander, and Peter stopped by one of the big shooting games with chunky plastic blue and pink gun shaped controllers.
“Ooh, can we play this one?” he said. “These are pretty fun”
“We can play whatever you like” Thor said, slotting a coin into the machine and picking up the pink gun controller.
“Wait, is it ok if I’m pink?”
“Ok” Thor said, swapping places with him and picking up the blue gun instead.
They got into the game pretty quickly, and Peter found himself concentrating enough to forget about his current predicament for a while.
“I used to come here with Ned” Peter said. “Ages and ages ago, even though it wasn’t really our area. We used to come quite a lot. It’s changed since then, though. New games and stuff. We got the high score on this old pinball machine, and I don’t think it was ever beaten. At least, not as far as I know”
“Maybe we could find it and have a look. Pinball isn’t that old, is it?”
“It kinda is, I think” Peter said. “They’re pretty retro. There used to be a pinball game on old computers. It was on some of the old models I used to have at the flat. I used to spend hours playing it. I was pretty good, but I mainly played because I liked the noises it made. It was kinda nice”
“You don’t really go in for that kind of thing any more”
“No, not really. I guess because I got so depressed after May died, and there’s a bunch of things I never picked up again after everything that happened. I’m not really sure there’s anything I miss anymore. Aside from Ned, maybe. But even then, that’s only when I think about it for too long” he lowered the gun, looking at the end score flashing up on the screen. “I always feel like everyone’s leaving me behind”
“Why’s that?” Thor asked, setting his controller down.
“Well. My parents died when I was little. I don’t remember them, but still. And then my uncle died. I do remember him, but the memories are starting to go pretty fuzzy. And then Liz moved away. We’re friends now, and we keep in touch, but even so. And then May died. I think that one hurt the most” he turned the gun over in his hands and then carefully set it down on its stand. “Then it was Ned, cutting me out of his life. And now my dads are at home while I’m at yours. That was horrible in a different way. It made me think of that bit in The Fox and The Hound, you know, like, when the old lady puts the fox in the car and he’s all excited but then she notices she’s sad and he doesn’t know why, and then she takes him to the woods and leaves him there and he doesn’t understand, and then he gets all scared and rained on. It felt like that... Have you seen that film?”
“Once” Thor said. “It made your daddy cry. He used to cry at lots of films”
“He still does. He cries at books too. And music”
“He can get very emotional” Thor said. “Do you want to play this one again?”
Peter shook his head. “Let’s find something else”
-
Peter stopped in front of the old pinball machine. The top ten high scores were displayed on the screen. There, still in first place, was ‘Peter and Ned’. Peter’s heart thudded as he looked at it. He’d hoped that, if the machine was still there, the score had been beaten. That way it wouldn’t feel so much like a painful memory. But there it was, evidence after the fact. It felt strange seeing it. But it had been like that for a long time, Peter and Ned, find one and find the other. It was that horrible meeting in the cafe with the blue curtains and broken neon sign that had been the tipping point. Or, maybe it was all the texts he didn’t respond to. He wasn’t really sure any more. It had been so long. Too long. He couldn’t really remember. But he knew that deep down, under all of it, losing Ned still hurt.
Thor put a hand on Peter’s shoulder.
“Are you ok?”
Peter swallowed and looked up at him. “Let’s go and have a look at those claw games. All the arcades we went to on holiday had those play till you win ones”
Thor nodded slightly. “Ok”
They had a look at all the claw machines, but none of them were the prize every time ones that Peter was hoping to find. He pouted.
“That’s no good. I can’t do the normal ones; I always lose”
“I’m ok at them” Thor said. “What do you want?”
Peter thought for a moment, and then shrugged. “I don’t know”
Thor turned and slotted a coin into one of the machines. Peter leant against him, watching. Thor missed completely the first two times, but on the third try he caught a funny smiling toy monkey. On the fourth go, he dropped a toy parrot into the prize return. On the fifth and final go, he got a fluffy toy rabbit with a soulful expression and soft little fluffy tail.
Thor picked the three toys up out of the prize door and held them out to Peter.
“Take your pick”
“You’re amazing!” Peter said, carefully taking the toy rabbit from him. “I like this one... Thank you”
“You’re welcome. You can have all of them if you like”
“I think you should keep the other two. They can go on your windowsill with those teddies daddy got for you”
“Good idea” Thor said, putting the monkey and parrot in his bag. “How about one of those racing games?”
Peter smiled. “Ok!”
They went over and jumped into the plastic seats at one of the racing games and put some money in. The loud revving and music started up, and Peter couldn’t help but laugh. It felt good to do something totally childish and fun for once.
-
They spent a good hour or more messing about in the arcade, and Peter had a great time. He soon forgot about everything that was troubling him, and instead got lost in the little bit of excitement of something different, grabbing Thor’s arm and dragging him over to this game and that game, his little rabbit tucked under his arm all the while.
When they left the arcade, Peter was still giggling, giddily happy, and was content to wander round the shops with Thor without making any kind of fuss. He felt good, and Thor was generous and bought him a few more treats. He had a feeling it was more of a sympathy thing than anything else, despite Thor not being the kind of man to go in for that kind of thing. Still, Peter wasn’t complaining. It was just good to be able to do something nice.
-
They had a late lunch before heading back to the flat. Peter helped Thor sort out all of the shopping, and then put his phone on to charge.
“I think I’m gonna have a bath” he said. “Dad said we’d go somewhere nice. I’m sure he packed some of my nicer clothes. Maybe I should iron something”
“I’ll do it for you if you choose some” Thor said. “There’s no rush; it’s still fairly early”
“It’s nearly four!” Peter said. “This day has gone quickly. I’m glad we only had a little lunch. Imagine if we got to the restaurant and I didn’t have an appetite!”
“I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. Go and have your bath”
“Ok, ok. I’ll pick out my clothes first and leave them on my bed. Are you sure you’re ok with ironing them?”
“Certain” Thor said. “Run along now. Remember to turn the whistle to the taps”
Peter laughed slightly. Thor had one of those baths with a shower build in above it, and he’d made the mistake of trying to run a bath without turning the lever before, and it wasn’t a mistake he really wanted to repeat.
“I will. Right, I’ve wasted enough time. I’m gonna go and have my bath”
-
Peter had a long bath, and he felt better for it. He took his time washing his face and hair and body and scrubbing his nails. He knew Tony wasn’t feeling well right now, so maybe seeing his son seemingly well taken care of would help ease the burden a bit. Besides, if they were going somewhere nice, Peter wanted to look the part.
He dried himself thoroughly, although there was only so much he could do about his hair, which remained quite damp. Still, he combed it out and decided that since it was no longer dripping wet, it would be fine.
Thor had ironed his chosen clothes to perfection, and set them carefully on the bed. Peter took his time a little, applying deodorant and a bit of body spritzer and cologne. He checked the time and saw it was already six o’ clock. Well, at least he had another hour to continue getting ready. He bit his thumb, wondering if he should wait and get dressed in a little while.
There was a knock on the door.
“Just a minute!” Peter yelped. He quickly pulled on his dressing gown to cover his dignity. “Yeah?”
The door opened.
“I thought you might want a drink” Thor said, holding a mug out to him.
“Oh! Thank you” Peter said, taking the mug and taking a quick sip.
“Now, are you sure you don’t want anything to eat?”
“I’m sure. Dad’s taking me out for tea, remember? I wanna save myself. Besides, we had a late lunch”
“True” Thor said. “Well, drink your tea at least. I’ll leave you to finish getting ready. Anything else you need before I go?”
“No, I think I’ve got everything” Peter said. “Thank you”
-
Peter took his time drinking his tea before getting dressed. He was careful to tuck in his shirt and straighten his collar so Tony wouldn’t do it for him. He found the one pair of good shoes he had with him and gave them a quick brush before slipping them up and neatly lacing them. Finally, he pulled on his blazer and looked at himself in the mirror. Well, he thought he looked ok. He looked smart, at least, and clean. Which was just about what he was going for.
-
Peter checked his coat was hung up by the front door, ready to go. He checked the time. 6.45pm. Wow, the time had slipped away quite quickly. Only fifteen minutes until Tony would arrive. Lovely. He was primed and ready. He straightened is jacket.
“Peter?”
Peter spun round. “Oh! Hi, uncle Thor”
“You look good, little one. Very cute”
“Thank you” Peter beamed. “I’m gonna sit here and wait for dad”
“Ok, well I’ll just be in the other room if you need anything”
“Ok, thanks, uncle Thor”
Thor left him to it, and Peter sat down on the wooden chair in the hallway near the front door. He sat up straight with his feet together and his hands on his knees, the way some of the teachers at school told him to. He kept his eyes fixed on the door, and he waited.
And waited.
And waited.
He checked his watch. Seven fifteen. He frowned slightly and looked back at the door. He waited some more.
And he waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Seven forty-five.
Eight fifteen.
Eight forty-five.
Nine o’ clock.
Peter took his phone out of his pocket. He had no new messages. He put it back and looked at the door again. Waiting.
-
“Peter?” Thor said gently.
Peter didn’t look at him, his eyes still fixed on the door. Thor rested a hand on his shoulder.
“Peter, you need to think about going to bed now”
Peter twitched and then turned to him properly. “No! Dad’s taking me out”
“It’s nearly ten o’ clock, little one” Thor said. “It doesn’t look like he’s coming”
“But he said he would!” Peter protested. “He promised! Near enough”
“Peter. It’s late. It’s time to go to bed”
“No!” Tears sprung to Peter’s eyes. “No, I’m not going to bed! What if dad comes and I’m asleep?! We’re going out!”
“If he comes while you’re in bed, I’ll wake you up straight away” Thor said. “But look at the time, Peter. I think you need to accept that he’s not coming. It’s time to call it a night”
Peter looked at him. He didn’t want to admit it, but he knew he was right. He’d been waiting for more than three hours. He wasn’t quite sure how to react. Part of him wanted to shake his head and sit defiantly where he was and refuse to move. Part of him wanted to throw himself on the floor and scream and kick and shout. And part of him wanted to go to his room and get undressed and crawl into bed and cry.
-
Thor went to check on Peter at around half ten. Peter was curled up on the duvet, crying into a pillow. His clothes were neatly folded on the chair, ready to go if they were needed. Thor sighed sadly and went and sat down on the edge of the bed, resting a hand on the boys bare shoulder.
“I know, sweetheart” he said. “I know”
Peter slowly sat up and held an arm out to him. Thor pulled him close and rocked him gently while he cried.
-
After Peter had finally fallen asleep, Thor went through to the living room and picked up the phone.
“I’m sorry, but the person you have called is not available. Please leave a message after the tone”
Thor growled in annoyance. “Tony, it’s Thor. What the hell happened tonight? You could have at least let us know you weren’t coming. Poor little Peter waited for you for hours, and he’s been crying his eyes out. If you could only see the poor hurt look on that boys face! I know you’re upset and you’re having a tough time, but how dare you let him down like that? You’d better have a good excuse ready for when you come and see him tomorrow, because a simple sorry isn’t going to cut it”
-
Tony listened to Thor’s message a couple of times over. The sound of the phone had woken him up, and he’d waited for it to ring out before picking it up. He looked at the time and groaned.
He hadn’t forgotten. Not exactly.
He’d had a hard day. It had been a weird day, very fuzzy and confusing. But that was mainly because of the copious amounts of alcohol he’d consumed.
It hadn’t been the plan. True, he and Loki had gone overboard the previous night, and slept late as a result. They were going to try to sort things out today. But they were too depressed. Loki was still tired, so he went to his own room and went to sleep again. Tony couldn’t sleep, and the more he looked around, the more he noticed how good those dregs of alcohol looked. There was barely a shot left in a lot of the bottles around him, and wasting them seemed pointless. He just finished the few leftover bits. But then he wandered about, feeling lost, and still feeling drunk, and he kept thinking about the clinic, and the baby they’d planned for, and their little boy, and the horribleness that was reality. And he was thirsty. There was a half-empty bottle of vodka next to the sink in the kitchen. It seemed to do the trick. At least, it did at first. But then that bottle was empty, and he still wanted more. So he had more.
And more.
And more.
And more.
And then he’d fallen asleep.
And then his phone had woken him up. He listened to Thor’s message a third time as he lay on his stomach on the bed. He sighed, and send Peter a text.
‘I’m so sorry, kiddo. Something came up. Love you lots xxx’
He didn’t feel great about it, but he was too fatigued to dwell on it. He turned his phone into Do Not Disturb mode, rolled over, and fell back asleep.
-
Tony spiralled. It just happened. He didn’t bother trying to fight against it or think about how bad an idea it was. He didn’t have to work if he didn’t want to, and he didn’t. He just wanted to stay at home and numb his feelings. The more he drunk, the less he cried. It was hard to overthink when he was fuzzy with alcohol and weak from not eating properly.
It seemed no time at all before the days all melded in to one and a week had passed. He didn’t leave the house. He didn’t reply to anyone’s messages. He wouldn’t even speak to Loki a lot of the time. Loki was too hurt to be of much use to anyone, and there was only so much he could do for Tony when he was like this. He tried, but he didn’t really get anywhere. He wasn’t giving up, but he wasn’t going out of his way to sort him either. He couldn’t. He spent a lot of time talking to Jo Jo, trying to clear his head enough to at least feed himself and wash his hair, if nothing else.
Tony didn’t seem to notice. He was quite happy to drink himself into a stupor, day after day. He didn’t want to talk to anyone. He spurned Loki’s suggestions of having Li Allen visit, or to go to a therapist, or a support group, or have a doctor come to see him. He was drinking too much to think straight, or make any effort at any type of recovery, and in his mind, he was perfectly fine just doing his own thing. One thing he did know, however, was that he didn’t want anyone interfering.
On the tenth day, Loki watched his husband washing down a packet of biscuits with a bottle of vodka, and he felt so tired and worn down and hopeless. He’d been trying to do things the right way, to come to terms with his infertility and the loss of the baby that never was, but he didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. So he picked up a bottle of Archers and started drinking too.
And all the while this was going on, every afternoon, at Thor’s flat, Peter would refuse to eat. Every evening, Peter would have a bath and get himself dried and dressed up, shoes and jacket on, ready to go. And every evening, at six thirty sharp, he would sit on the wooden chair in the hallway, hands on his knees and eyes on the door, waiting for his dad. And every night at ten o’ clock, Thor would put a hand on the boys shoulder, and he’d be forced to haul himself up and go to his room. And he’d get undressed and fold his clothes carefully and put them on the chair. And then he’d turn the lights out and crawl into bed and sob and howl and wail until he’d eventually cried himself to sleep.

Artist Conversation - Charlie Roses

Artist: Charlie Roses
Exhibition: Dead Man’s Party

Gallery: LBSU School of Art

1 - About the Artist
Charlie Roses is a senior working towards his BFA degree in the School of Art’s Sculpture program here at CSULB. His interests include retro photography, retro poster designs, sculptures, 1920′s art, and evidently, Halloween movies/aesthetics. He has always had a passion for art and drawing, ever since the age of two. Before college, he was interested in water color and oil paintings. Now, he has a set style involving Halloween that gives off a “spooky” vibe and also enjoys working with digital art, sculptural installation, and 3D modeling. His work definitely represents these interests of his and he does an amazing job at demonstrating a spooky theme in each of his pieces.
2 - Formal Analysis
Charlie clarified that most of his work involves dark colors and rarely does black and white pieces, though you can see a black and white piece pictured above. He says he prefers doing colored pieces, instead. In his piece where you can see a pumpkin, there are various hues of oranges, browns, and black. Some pieces involved mainly sinuous lines and shapes throughout his work. There were also lots of shading and realism involved in his portraits with human faces. His pieces were fairly small, basically the size of regular computer paper. Therefore, it’s better to look at his work up close rather than standing far away.
3 - Content Analysis
The purpose and main idea of Charlie Roses’ gallery was to represent Halloween aesthetics and simply his interest in “spooky season”. He gets a lot of inspiration from his favorite Halloween movies, including Beetle Juice, all of the Sinister movies, Hush, and many more. The “spookiness” is represented by the spider webs, pumpkins, crows, and the dark colors he uses in his work in general. His work is pretty unique to me because I don’t see this spooky theme too often. His work also reminds me of tattoo art because of the details and smooth shading. He said himself that some of his work is actually inspired by vintage tattoo designs.
4 - Synthesis/My Experience
As someone who loves the fall season and Halloween, I was truly impressed with Charlie Roses’ work. I love the colors/ideas behind his artwork and just like him, I have a passion for horror movies! Although some people may find it creepy or weird, I personally find work like this fun yet mysterious. It’s interesting to observe and allows people to use their imagination. I would definitely love seeing work like this in horror films or even books.

What Is The Time Period In The Devil May Cry Series?
From what I’ve gathered the Devil May Cry series takes place in a Retro Universe -- basically where retro, vintage or antiquated technology, styles and aesthetics are still used, but which otherwise is or at least resembles The Present Day. Often cultural styles from different time periods are mixed and matched, usually with those that date no later than The '60s or so.
This makes sense as the technology in the series varies. For example, in Dante’s office he has a rotary phone, a boombox, a jukebox and a old color TV (in the anime). Later on in the series Nero shows up with some modernized-looking cordless headphones. This makes it hard to pin point the time period with just the few pieces of technology we’ve seen in the series. There’s also the possibility that Dante is just too poor to upgrade (or he doesn’t bother with it because his stuff keep getting broken every time). But that doesn’t explain why the rest of the DMC world isn’t up-to-date with modern inventions either.
In Devil May Cry 5 each of the characters used telephone booths to make their calls. But when Nero was at the fancy-looking hotel, he made his call with a rotary phone. However, with Nico in order to receive those calls from him, she used what looked like one of those first ever mobile phone (which probably took hours to charge, lasted 35 minutes or so, and cost a lot too). Or it could have been a satellite phone? At that point, it was clear that the DMC world isn’t modeled after a particular time period and it’s not going for realism either.
After all, modern cell phones would have been a thing for them by now and even computers. Instead, it borrow things from different time periods to create a retro and aesthetic pleasing game for us to enjoy. With a bit of digging around I also found out that Hiroyuki Kobayashi (the producer of DMC1, DMC4 and the DMC:TAS) once stated in an interview that the DMC world is very much like ours and it has phones -- just not cellphones. I can’t find the original article, but there was another old article that had a similar discussion with him about it...
Hiroyuki Kobayashi: In Devil May Cry [series character Dante's] office, they do have a phone, but it's a black analog kind of phone. That feeling of what the world is like is something that we really want to protect, so even though it does have phones, we don't want it to be a world where there is a cell phone and you can immediately talk to anyone in the world.
Having said that, it is a world where they do have motorbikes, so creating this mix between high-tech and analog technology -- a world where some things have advanced and some things haven't advanced -- is pretty difficult.
For example, there's a jukebox in Dante's office, but it plays old vinyl records. Some parts of technology have advanced, and some haven't advanced. Keeping that true throughout the series and the game is difficult, and we need to have all the core members on the same page. That is certainly one of the challenges in making the game. Having said that, it is a lot of fun to be able to create this kind of unique world of our own design.
After a little more digging I found more information on this subject and it’s actually a lot more recent too. On the Polygon website, Editor Matt Leone was at Capcom’s San Francisco office during this year’s Game Developers Conference. He met with Devil May Cry 5 director Hideaki Itsuno, senior producer Michiteru Okabe, and producer Matt Walker to discuss DMC5. Source: Devil May Cry 5: The post-mortem interview
Matt Leone [Interviewer]: To a certain degree, the game — and Devil May Cry in general — feels like a kitchen sink of different ideas; a lot of things could fit in the Devil May Cry world. Can you think of any things that have come up that felt too out of bounds for that universe?
Hideaki Itsuno: It’s interesting. I know this isn’t quite the direction you’re going for with that question, but there are things that technically don’t fit in a Devil May Cry, and it generally falls around the sense of style that we have. For instance, it’s not as cool for someone to take out a cell phone and say, “Devil May Cry” [with a normal voice]. But when you have a big landline phone on a desk, you can pick it up and say “Devil May Cry” [with a deep voice]. And that really comes down to the fact that we grew up in a certain era. We grew up in the ’70s and ’80s, before there was technology like this. That sense of style is something that’s been ingrained into us from having grown up in that period. There’s a lot of stuff in the game where they don’t use the latest technology, because from our point of view, this is what’s cool.
Eventually, if we ever have a director on a new Devil May Cry game who is in their 20s or something, they’ll have grown up with completely different stuff. So then the sense of style might change, and you might have stuff where in the game they’re watching YouTube or whatever.
But there’s also kind of that element of, what’s stylish? What we know to be cool is really based on our experiences in the ’70s and ’80s, but then also we have the cool dark hero element. Like with Dante, sure, he doesn’t really do terrible things — he doesn’t kill humans, that kind of thing — but there are dark aspects to him, or to the heroes in these games. Yet really, they’re pure, proper heroes that are very all about justice and protecting.
What got me thinking about all this was because when I was going over my old fanfiction I noticed something, well, more like the lack of something. I was wondering why I was making my original character go to the library to research books for information on the occult when she could’ve just google’d it (or use an equivalent of the search engine).
But then I realized that it felt out of place if I did that because not once had I ever seen or heard any mention of computers in DMC series (especially in DMC3 as that was the game my fanfiction was focused on). Maybe they do exist, but it was still in the early stages of creation? Or that it wasn’t available for the public and only scientist, military, government or whatnot were the ones using it? I do not know, but books are a valuable source of information and will always be around. So I figured I couldn’t go wrong with having my character do some old-fashion research.
It also makes sense that when Devil May Cry was first released it was in 2001, so of course that had some influence. At the time of writing this post it’s been 18 years since then and technology has made many advancements and will keep on advancing. But even before that in 1998, after the completion of Resident Evil 3, DMC originally started off as a part of the Resident Evil franchise, under the name "Team Little Devil". Early research and development work included a trip to Spain to examine various castles as a basis for the game's environments. So, of course, that also helped to shape DMC into what it is today.
I get the feeling that DMC4 to DMC5 is kinda like when the 90s meet 2000s. In which those who live in the era know what it was like to see cassettes and VHS tapes turn into CD-ROMs. Floppy disk to USB flash drives, Walkman/Discman to mp3 or ipods and so on.
Now, what about cameras? Hm, I do wonder which version of it is fitting for the DMC series. There’s a painted portrait of the whole family in Dante’s childhood home, but on his desk there is a photo of his mother. It might be one of those hand-coloring photograph? I figured because of the clothing they’re wearing looks old-fashion, it may suggest that photography might not have been that common during that time. Paintings were probably popular, but Eva’s photo on Dante’s desk is in color. Maybe it is an actual photo from a camera (the kind that’s not black & white -- film camera possibly)? Unless it’s a small hand-painted portrait of her?
I’ll research this later. Anyway, these were just my musings that spawn from my old DMC fanfiction. Obviously, I don’t have to be canonically correct but I personally like to do my best in sticking with the source material. That usually means I have to do a bit of research to properly understand whatever peaks my interest and then figured how what I want to do with that information. Sometimes it helps me to better build up the DMC universe in my stories from. I also find that it even helps to make it feel very immersive for my readers.
