had meant to do it exactly the one year later mark, but i blinked and suddenly april was may was june -- so ended up being more like a year and 1.5 months lol

May 11th, 2024 vs. April 6th, 2023

its so funny seeing them nest to each other now, but i remember when i finished the first version last year, i was so proud to have finally made a proper 'finished' piece.

like, yall, i struggled for years to every be able to create a piece i would ever call close to 'done'. part of that is me being a very knit-picky kinda person, and wanted to continue to tweak everything all of the time forever, but on top of that i also do work slow af, and before last year i didnt really have access to any digital media. and i love traditional mediums, but im defintiely not practiced enough to be able to get the results i was looking for with any sort of speed. like im genuinely not sure i created a single 'finished' work in my life -- not in school, not in work, not even in the free space of silly fandom doodles.

and then this piece happened!

and i knew even then that it was messy and rough af, but it had a background!! and color!! sure, the linework wasnt polished at all but still, for a silly little fanart? it was defined enough to distinguish the separate characters, and read expressions! there was even a little tiny bit of lighting!! i hate lighting!!

seeing the two versions side by side honestly i kinda have to laugh at how Rough the first version looks now. but you know what. im still so so proud of it. the colors are muddy, theres no shift in value; their clothing designs arent at all defined, leos teeth look weird af and theres lines on caseys face that are definitely from me accidentally dragging my fingers across the tablet when i didnt mean to but like. its there! its finished! i did it!

idk. ive never had a piece ive ever wanted to hang on my own fridge before. :)

This project has been something I've wanted to do for a while but only now got around to actually making it.

The real painting's name is The Defense of the Sampo in English (by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, 1896). Yes, the Sampo is golden pizzas in this "AU", because obviously! And the pike jaw kantele is April's video camera.

ICE CREAMMMM!!! i think he LOVES ice cream because it is 1) cold and 2) soft and gooey for his toothless mouth. The get it together prezzie preferences can back me up on this and so can his move it artwork so i know i'm not alone. Luckily for you i did draw him eating ice cream before so here is that for you

I do also have a love hate relationship with him eating burgers because you know how i feel about his gold characterization but burgers ARE inherently funny. I do concede that he would enjoy a cold wet burger. One time someone made a video of him that i'm going to find right now with a tiktok(?) audio like "everyone stop fucking fighting i just wanna go to burger king even though i don't like burger king because it's shit" and it transfixed me because i think the idea of orbulon being addicted to burgers despite not actually enjoying the experience of eating a burger is kind of revolutionary

Also somehinf i forgot to mention in this post but i'm adding it to the bottom right now but going back to the ice cream thing i think orbulon thrived during mona's gelateria era. When she pivoted to pizza he was devastated. He hates pizza. But she can never know that

Personal little headcanons about Damian that I have

• Growing up Damian was told how much he looks like his dad only for him to hit puberty looking 90% like his mom

• Because he looks like his mom he's a very pretty boy, so much so that it stresses his brothers out because of all the attention he attracts, especially the unwanted attention lol

• The languages he's fluent in aside from English are Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French, Russian and Spanish. His favorites to speak are Arabic and Chinese

• He's a very light sleeper due to his upbringing, however he soon realized that if he's sleeping next to someone he trusts he can actually get a good night's sleep

• The one person that he just can't seem to draw right is Tim

• Kids a weeb of course his drawing Hatsune Miku fanart

• Despite his best efforts he's lithe and lean when it comes to muscle mass as he gets older (mostly due to his vegetarian diet I imagine) . He tells himself he doesn't mind, it makes him more nimble on the field. Tho sometimes he still wishes that he'll wake up one morning with the same build as his dad like he thought he would have when he was a kid.

• He's a clothes stealer. Shirts, hoodies, socks, doesn't matter he's taking them whether it be from his brothers or Jon

• He has a small collection of stuffed animals that he's accumulated over the years from friends and family. His three favorites are a bear that Alfred gave him when he first started living at the Manor, an elephant from Dick, and a cat that Jon won for him at a fair

• Some of his favorite romance animes included Fruits Basket, Kimi ni Todoke, Your lie in April

• He has a manga collection. Jon thinks it's pretty funny that amongst all his other more serious books there's just a bunch of manga

• He stops growing when he hits 5'7/5'8, he believes he'll hit a belated growth spurt for a while but once he hits like 25 he learns to accept his height. Still doesn't like talking about it tho

• Because Damian takes after his mom he's rather soft and delicate looking so people don't really expect him to know how to fight, that when he does knock someone down on their ass it's always a fun surprise for everybody

thank you to everyone who has not only purchased the comic, but also had kind words to say in tags and through asks!! I am away for holiday for most of this month, and I have been/will be largely offline on account of this*-- but please know that my heart is incredibly full to know people like this story!!

A few recurring questions I'll answer here real quick:

Will Sacred Bodies have a physical print? Yes! I would like to self-publish this book after the fair is concluded and sell it at conventions and through my online store.

What are the Ba'It based off of? Their body/limb plan is based on pteradons!! with some bat and bird anatomy thrown in. Garaang are semi-bipedal so that makes the silhouette even weirder, but you see some quadrupedal stances in the comic and it might make more sense then. I don't want to post or talk too much about some of the minutae of their design, as it is part of the story itself. :}

What medium did you use for the comic? It's all digital; I used Clip Studio Paint to draw the entire thing. I use the base watercolour and design pencil brushes that come with the programme. How long did it take you to make the comic? It's a little hard to estimate-- initial ideas, visdev and writing drafts were intermitent at the start of the year; once I landed on the story, finalising the script would've taken no longer than a week of recurring writing and editing. It's the actual drawing that takes forever, unfortunately. I started thumbnailing around April, and pencilling, colours and painting were a 10-11 hour work-day commitment for most of June and July. (I lost a lot of work-time in May cause I fell ill, womp womp). I'd probably say it was 4 - 5 months of labour. Are you going to write more stories in this world? I would really like to! I have a lot of ideas rattling in my head for the Valley of the World-- the place that the folk of the Spire have escaped. That being said, I have a whole graphic novel to finish first! It has been pushed back on account (but not exclusively because) of me working on my SBCF entries the last couple years, and I don't want to neglect it any further!! (it's 350+ full colour pages though so it was always going to be a huge undertaking)

Yeeaahh so here we have Donnie and April taking Leo out to get some human clothes and they are both absolutely bamboozled over the clothes that Leo picks out for himself (he's trying okay </3)

art vs artist 2024!

i used sooo much blue and yellow this year, maybe next year ill branch out to more colours but i cant help that blue and yellow are just the best colours for drawing.

here are my favourite works for each month of 2024!

january:

I used colour layer modes instead of colouring 'organically', but this was the first time I made a drawing in full colour and actually really liked it. this was before i started painting colours directly into my drawings but its a great effort and i learned a lot about colour layer modes here!

february:

didn't make much great art this month but this sketch scratches my brain correctly. the contrast the hatching the lighting!!!! this was where i started being obsessed with the different forms you can manage to portray with just a little rimlight

march:

possibly one of my favourites of the WHOLE YEAR. Inspired by Andrew Salgado's work, I'm a huge fan of his stuff. In this I learned that colours are literally stupid and if you don't care about logic, you can actually make something very distinctive and somewhat abstract work. Kick-started my whole journey to learning colours so this was probably one of my most important pieces i've ever made

April:

again, not much good art but this is nice I guess. drew this for the anniversary of senna's death, i like the polaroidy feel

may:

I LOVE my may era. Most of everything was done with this oil painter brush I found and it just went very painterly and kinda abstract with strokes and colours, was a month of experimentation for sure

june:

I didn't like this very much when I made it originally, but looking back I love the kinda creaminess of this piece. I haven't really been able to recreate that effect so far though, so this one stands out to me for sure

july:

Not a fantastic art month for me, but I was experimenting with textures in this piece and learned a lot of what I SHOULDN'T do. Very useful

August

I made this piece because I hadn't spotted any other lesteban enjoyers in the wild. Idk the colours in this just came out very easily which is always enjoyable

September:

GRAHHHB the colours in this have me in a CHOKEHOLD the DESATURATED BLUE SHADOWS and PINK CHEEKS!!! This definitely isn't my best of the month but it BRINGS ME A LOT OF JOY OKAY I suddenly turned into an Esteban superfan in theast fiveish months of the year. so dumb that like one of my favourite pieces ever was a shitpost
