idea: six of crows, but each plot starts by them acting like literal crows.
examples:
finding something shiny in the dirt that sends them on a quest
people thinking the dregs are a bad omen and doing something that causes bad stuff to actually happen
a crow singing loudly and distracting/scaring someone else, causing a chain reaction
making a tool and getting into trouble with it
mating for life & holding funerals (yes crows hold funerals)

Hi!
I just read archivist wasp and loved it! but apparently there are a bunch of other books in the same universe and I was wondering what reading order you'd recommend :)
Also I love your blog and art!
-E
very comedic timing, I literally just started a reread yesterday lmao. Also, thank you!
OK so the main things are three books + a novella + a vaguely connected middle grade, and some extra stuff online (which I'll get to after these). Here’s publishing order for the books, which is a good reading order:
Archivist Wasp
Latchkey - book 2 in the (unfinished) wasp trilogy, following her & the Upstarts & our ghosts (and more about their backstory)
Firebreak is a standalone narratively, but has some significant connections. It’s set in a dystopian city before the apocalypse that happened long before Wasp’s time.
Jillian Vs Parasite Planet is a middle grade space adventure set before Firebreak (the closest to recognisably our present), and is the least connected to everything else (tonally and literally)- but it has a character/piece of technology that is significant in:
Flight & Anchor, a novella prequel to Firebreak (you would understand this if you read it before JvPP & maybe F, but would miss small details/references)
I would consider Archivist Wasp > Latchkey > Firebreak, or Archivist Wasp > Firebreak > Latchkey, then everything else more or less in whichever order you want?
I haven't tried reading Firebreak inbetween (until right now - I was just gonna read AW&L but decided to slip it in there too after I saw this ask lol, just started Firebreak) so I can't vouch for whether it'd be more rewarding to read F or L first, but I like the idea of that. If Firebreak is more accessible to you (likely, as it's better distributed) then I think go for it.
---
The short fiction which is all online, mostly came out just before or after Firebreak, and will make sense if you’ve read at least Archivist Wasp & Firebreak!
Pathfinding - short story about our supersoldiers (free)
Last Chance - set in a different town a little before Archivist Wasp, following a side character in AW/L (free)
Archivist Wasp Myths: Ember Girl at the Crossroads , The Story of the Harvesting-Knife and How It Came to Us Out of the Before-Time Into Now, Catchkeep's Favourite Children, Carrion Boy and the Crow, The Story of Why Catchkeep and the Chooser Hate Each Other In the First Place, Ember Girl & Carrion Boy Fight the Metal Men - essentially the full versions of some of the mythological stories in Archivist Wasp. You’d get the most out of these reading them after the main 3 books. (all on patreon)
FAQ - this is like. a separate short story that you could argue is set in the Firebreak era lol (patreon)
Catchkeep - this is the draft version of the third book in the Archivist Wasp trilogy, currently being posted on patreon, though it’s only a few chapters in and it’s been radio silence for a while. (When (🤞) this is finished I guess I’d say you could choose to read the trilogy first then everything else)
and also:
Archivist Wasp deleted scenes and commentary (patreon)
Latchkey deleted scenes and commentary (patreon)
unpublished short story that inspired AW (patreon)
This post outlining connections between the first 4 books and some of the short stories (free)
the patreon is just $1 for access to everything! There's a couple other unrelated stories there too. Hope this makes sense!!!

1, 10, 15 for Grishaverse ask game?
thanks for the ask!!
1 - who’s your favorite character?
inej ghafa always <3
10 - do you want there to be a third six of crows book?
tbh? nah. i didn’t love the direction of king of scars/rule of wolves, though i did quite like getting to spend more time with nikolai since he’s my favorite character from the grisha trilogy, and i don’t really see soc3 as having nearly as much potential as the original soc duo did. kos/row is largely a case of wasted potential, and soc3 doesn’t have all that much to begin with, soooooo. yeah. i would much rather read post-canon novellas (or even full length novels maybe, but they seem more suited to something a little shorter) about the crows’ futures (inej’s pirate adventures, a heist or other criminal venture kaz pulls off with the remaining dregs, kanej’s future relationship developments (though i also do LOVE post canon kanej fic so it’s entirely possible i would just be disappointed by anything made canon) wesper dealing with merchant council drama and trying to enact reform, nina… idk i want a better arc for nina in general than what she got in kos/row but i guess if i had to go with what’s canon i might appreciate something that shows how difficult it is to enact change in fjerda kinda like what i’m envisioning for wesper) than soc3. it’s never gonna happen but that’s my dream in terms of getting more books.
15 - what’s your favorite fantasy world?
i’m gonna assume that this is talking about the different grishaverse countries, since this is a gv ask game? kerch all the way. maybe this is bc the grishaverse as it stands rn peaked with six of crows but i think kerch is a really neat setting. ketterdam feels almost alive, a character itself in the way it’s shaped the crows’ lives. it’s a really vibrant city in all its awfulness. we don’t get much of southern kerch, but to me that’s a setting with a TON of potential. i’ve seen some great headcanons for it. (and one of my wips, the sower, takes place largely in southern kerch! it’s pretty slow going at the moment but i’m really hoping to pick it back up again soon. my sideblog for my fics/writing is @tealquills :))
also, i really liked what they did with novyi zem in season two of shadow and bone. it definitely doesn’t overtake kerch as a favorite, but i thought the cultural elements were really neat.

Tumblr media
Weirdly enough, I often find myself reading less in the summer, since I have more time than I do during the rest of the year to do other things. Also artfight has been eating up more than a bit of my free time! But here’s a collection a graphic novels I sat around on the hammock reading, and some novels I finished up...
(Everyone go read All Systems Red, holy crow guys)
Tumblr media
A Whale of the Wild
The “sequel” to A Wolf Called Wander, though it doesn’t actually connect to the previous novel except in the stylistic/thematic sense. A Whale of the Wild is very much a standalone novel. And a pretty decent one! Personally, I think I liked Wolf more, but this one was a pleasant, informative read, with just the right amount of crushing dread sprinkled in. It’s about a young orca called Vega who is learning to become a new wayfinder for her pod but who still has a lot to learn, especially in an ocean that is becoming increasingly hostile to orcas and the other sealife that live alongside humans. When a devastating earthquake hits, Vega and her little brother find themselves separated from their family, lost in a now horrifyingly unfamiliar environment, and fighting starvation as the salmon that sustain them become more and more unreliable. It’s a desperate fight for survival as they search for food and their missing family. This book is written for a middle grade level, and does a really good job of putting the current environmental crisis into an animal’s perspective while giving the readers something to hope for.
Tumblr media
The Adventure Zone: The Crystal Kingdom
Every July I eagerly anticipate the next Adventure Zone graphic novel. This one is for their fourth arc, The Crystal Kingdom, in which Magnus, Taako, and Merle respond to a SOS from a floating laboratory that is gradually being consumed by crystals and which threatens the entire world should it fall into the ocean. Carey Pietsch’s art continues to be absolutely fantastic, so beautifully and hilariously expressive, and this one delivers some great Merle moments, lots of Carey Fangbattle, and, of course, Kravtiz. Kravitz, my beloved…
Anyway, I obviously always recommend these. If you’ve never gotten into The Adventure Zone, I totally recommend either trying these graphic novels — or even better, just go listen to the podcast because it really is both hilarious and creates a shockingly good and heart-wrenching story by the end.
Tumblr media
All Systems Red
I’ve seen The Murderbot Diaries on my dash occasionally, and it always looked interesting, but a friend’s recommendation finally compelled me to read the first novella of the series. And holy shit y’all. Absolutely the best book I’ve read this month, it’s amazing. Mind-blowingly good. Also, if you’re like me and want a good audiobook, it’s a nice three-hour listen, very chill!
Anyway, All Systems Red is about a Security Unit, an artificially created being that’s part-organic part-mechanical and all-company-owned-and-controlled. However, self-named “Murderbot” has managed to hack into the system that suppresses its own will, and is now coasting along, doing the least amount of work its job requires not to be noticed, while preferring to spend all its time watching the hours and hours of soap operas it has downloaded into its brain. And it’s a tolerable if somewhat dull life, until the science team that it's currently rented to is attacked and the whole mission goes pear-shaped. Suddenly Murderbot has to scramble to keep its humans alive… while its humans scramble with the realization that their “SecUnit” isn’t actually a mindless robot like they had all believed...
This story is both gripping and hilariously funny. Murderbot has such a unique voice and perspective and it’s an absolute pleasure to follow its story. I reallly need to read the next book...
Tumblr media
Asterix and the Banquet
A classic. I was startled when I realized I hadn’t actually read this Asterix story… but hell I’m not gonna complain, it lets me read one of the originals for the first time again! In this Asterix volume, the Indomitable Gauls and the Romans end up arranging a bet — the Romans intend to keep them under siege, trapped in their village, while Asterix is confident that he can easily evade them… and will prove it by going on a tour around all of Gaul, collecting iconic foods from each region in order to return and put on a fine banquet. So we get a fantastic adventure in which Asterix and Obelix run all over the country, pursued the whole way, while making cheerful stops at the various eateries along the way. Also the first book Dogmatix shows up in! All around, a wonderful read, fun like all the best Asterix comics are.
Tumblr media
Beauty Pop v4
A less impressive graphic novel. The first Beauty Pop is one of my guilty pleasure manga because… it really is pretty stupid but in the best possible ways. I mean, the whole thing is framed around hairstyling battles, like a shojo sports manga without the sports. It’s bonkers. Unfortunately, the series does not really manage to hold up, and it really begins to feel repetitive and dragging as it continues… as a lot of series like this do. *shrug* Unsurprising but still kinda disappointing I suppose. The building three-way romantic tension is mildly interesting if for no other reason than the main character Does Not Notice and Does Not Care about any of it, which is amusing and refreshing.
Tumblr media
FRNCK v5
Now this series only gets better and better as it goes. This is the first book of the second arc, and somehow the danger just seems to be ramping up and up and up. The cavefamily have lost their home… as well as Léonard and Gargouille. Heartbroken, shocked, and angry, Franck is the one who ends up shouldering the blame for their presumed deaths as the others mourn. Things only get worse when Franck finds himself separated from the family, and in the territory of another tribe, this one hostile and cannibalistic...
Tumblr media
Haikyuu v5
I continue to read this series because it continues to be charming… though it is beginning to feel, maybe, just a little repetitive. Kind of an inevitability with sports manga. But so far it continues to be good enough to overcome that. I’m not sure what I can say about this series that I haven’t already, so I’ll simply say it continues to be one of the most impressive sports manga I’ve read, and the author does a fantastic job of creating engaging characters, fleshed out teams, and really compelling relationships. I do genuinely adore all the main members of Crows, along with a number of characters from the rival teams as well. And of course it has some kickass volleyball scenes that are just drawn so dramatically they can’t help but take your breath away a little.
Tumblr media
M*A*S*H Goes To Maine
Meh. The original book of the series was actually quite good in my opinion. This one… considerably less so. The first part I enjoyed more, since it was about Hawkeye, Trapper, Duke, and Oliver Jones trying to set up the FinestKind Clinic and Fishmarket in Crabapple Cove (which… is just the best premise I could have ever asked for). However, the book spends most of its time describing the quirky lives and times of other people living in the area and I… just… don’t care. It was funny at times but… I just don’t care. I wanted to hear more about the main cast. Also I found this book felt more racist and misogynistic than the first which also put me off :/ Wouldn’t bother if I were you. Go read the first book instead, or better yet just watch the TV show which is an obvious banger.
Tumblr media
My Heart’s in the Highlands
I have had this on my “currently reading” list for so long but I’m officially giving up. It’s a really good book in theory but my god I can’t get over the pacing.
It’s about Lady Jane, a woman studying medicine in Edinburgh in 1888, and who suddenly finds herself back in the Highlands in the 13th century. Lost and confused, Jane is now at the mercy Clan Donald’s hospitality while she tries to adjust to this new world and hunts for her broken time machine. Fortunately, this hospitality include a burgeoning friendship with a red-haired warrior woman, Ainslie nic Dòmhnaill, who opens Jane’s eyes to the way the world could be.
Listen. It drives me nuts. This book should be completely up my alley, it has everything I like — IT HAS ALL OF ITS HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES CITED AT THE BACK, LITTLE EXTRA DETAILS ABOUT EVERY CHAPTER. THAT’S MY SHIT RIGHT THERE. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LIKE BEING ABLE TO GO OVER HISTORICAL DETAILS?? AND WELL RESEARCHED FOOTNOTES?? And yet it doesn’t. Fucking. Work for me. It has a kickass Scottish warrior lady as a love interest! It has a badass lady doctor! It has fish-out-of-water culture shock! But it also has a completely meandering plot, no sense of building tension, and a romance that just happens out of nowhere and feels completely unearned and uninteresting.
I would genuinely just rather read Outlander again, which I know has its own host of problems, but at least Outlander felt exciting and interesting and tense and funny. The romance built in fits and starts, it was complicated, and kept me interested. That book had me hooked (and has me hooked every time I reread it) whereas this book I’ve been sadly picking at for months like its a plate of overcooked spinach. This felt like an attempt at a queer, historically accurate knockoff which I would normally be super into but which just could not stick the landing.
Tumblr media
Moomin on the Riviera
My first time actually reading anything from the Moomin canon. I have zero idea how to feel about it! It certainly is as feral as I’ve heard described! Overall, I think I enjoyed it but it sure made me feel strange emotions I didn’t know existed. I’m not even going to try to describe it. Read it if you want a batshit insane anti-capitalist comic.
Tumblr media
Surviving the City
This was good in some areas, less good in others. It had a very interesting indigenous perspective on life in the modern city, the foster system, and The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women issue, which I’ve never seen handled in a book before. Something about the pacing did not completely click with me and I found myself getting easily distracted, but it’s definitely worth the read just to experience it and look at the issues it deals with through the characters’ (and author’s) eyes. It did give me a lot to think about and wrestle with, which is sometimes the best thing a book can give you.
Tumblr media
Torchwood: Pack Animals
A really fun read, more so than I had ever expected! If you like Torchwood and want more stories about the team before everything goes to shit, this is perfect for that. It includes the entire cast, an interest mystery to be unravelled, lots of slavering monsters, Rhys being really wonderful and sweet (which I didn’t know I wanted until I read this book), and all the humour I expect from Torchwood. I had to send a lot of quotes to my long-suffering girlfriend who a) does not watch this show but b) needs to tolerate it because I find it too funny to keep to myself. It was good enough to make me go out another book of the series since this was the only one my library carried.

25 books recs from my 2020 reads
I’ve been wanting to make this post for a while, but I wanted to wait and see how my last reads of the year would go. Also, narrowing them down to 20 was a nope, so I just made a bigger list instead lol. I’ve tried to include a vague description of each book and the main trigger warnings and rep. I apologise in advance if I forgot anything (for trigger warnings, I suggest double checking on the site booktriggerwarnings).
Adult SFF
A Memory Called Empire: it feels like I’ve raved about this one enough but just in case: A Memory Called Empire is a space opera following an ambassador who suddenly finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery and a political conspiracy. It’s got brilliant world building and a nuanced and intricate reflection about culture, language and colonialism. Subtle slow burn f/f romance on the side (+ a poly relationship shown in flashbacks). TW: suicide.
Black Sun: first book in an epic fantasy series inspired by pre-columbian Americas. Great cast of characters and very interesting use of mythology + the main plot is focused on political and religious conflict and the author handles both sides of it quite well. The book has bisexual and non-binary rep, one of the main characters is blind. TW: suicide, abuse, self harm. There’s some gore, although it’s not extremely graphic.
The Sword of Kaigen: a Japanese inspired stand alone epic fantasy. The book is not focused on battle or war, although they play an important role in the plot itself, but on family dynamics and personal growth. It’s a very character driven novel, with some rather conventional elements (elemental magic) and some more original reuses of traditional fantasy tropes. TW: abuse.
Empire of Sand: first book in a duology of companion novels inspired by Mughal India. Mostly focused on religious and political conflict, although romance is heavily featured in both books. Pretty good slow burn romance in both cases. TW: abuse, slavery, torture, sexual assault, self-harm.
The Light Brigade: a rather unconventional space opera with a complex non linear narration. This is not an easy read in every possible way, but the pay off is worth it. Also it’s one of those cases in which I think it’s best to go in knowing nothing or almost nothing. TW: torture, murder, ptsd, war, gore, infectious diseases (yeah you need a strong stomach for this........).
Gods of Jade and Shadow: a coming of age story set in Mexico during the Jazz age. A bit of a lighter read, a journey-adventure featuring a god slowly becoming human, tasks to complete etc. TW: bullying.
River of Stars: more of an alternate history than pure fantasy, as most of GGK’s novels are. This one in particular was inspired by Chinese history and it’s ideally a companion to Under Heaven. Both can be read as standalones but I find their parallels and differences very interesting. I’d also recommend The Lions of Al-Rassan and A Brightness Long Ago, by the same author. All of them revisit historical events from the point of view of rather ordinary people who find themselves in the middle of events they can’t control.
Empire of Gold: the last book in a trilogy, starting with City of Brass. The first novel is more trope-y and naive in places, but I found both the second book and the conclusion of the trilogy more nuanced and satisfying. There’s a m/m relationship on the side. TW: mass murder, torture, enslavement, abuse.
Adult SFF novella edition
The Deep: novella set in an underwater society built by the descendants of African slave women that were tossed overboard. The novella deals with trauma, both personal and generational one.
This Is How You Lose The Time War: epistolary set during a time-travel war. Enemies to lovers f/f romance. Very character driven, don’t expect a lot of world building.
The Empress of Salt and Fortune: an Asian-inspired novella that gives a voice to people usually silenced by history. It follows a cleric as they chronicle the story of the late empress, retold through objects that she used in her life.
YA SFF
Return of the Thief/The Queen’s Thief series in general: the last book in the queen’s thief series! Honestly just read this series it’s literally too good? It is carefully planned from start to finish and it has politics, adventures, characters with extremely questionable morals and good banter? TW: loss of a limb, torture (not extremely graphic), ptsd.
The Kingdom of Back: probably Marie Lu’s best book yet? think of the concept of “shakespeare’s sister” as explained by Woolf in A Room of One’s Own, but with the Mozart siblings. I actually had no idea Mozart had a sister prior to reading this. It’s a quite emotional read, as it shows how little opportunities women had to be recognised for their talent.
Adult Literary Fiction
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous: a beautiful exploration of language, family history, trauma, sexuality and gender. TW: war, ptsd, death.
Augustus: an epistolary historical fiction novel narrating some of the main events of Augustus’ reign through letters from/by his closest friends and enemies. Not even remotely historically accurate, but a lot of fun to read if you’re familiar with historical accounts of that period.
A Gentleman in Moscow: following Count Alexander Rostov, who, in 1922, is sentenced to a lifetime of house arrest in the Metropol, a luxurious hotel in the center of Moscow. A peculiar novel, funny and heartbreaking at once, following a vibrant cast of characters as they come and go from Rostov’s secluded life.
How Much of These Hills Is Gold: following two recently orphaned children through the gold rush era, the book is an adventurous historical fiction piece that focuses on themes like gender, identity and immigration. TW: abuse, sexual assault, racism.
The Memory Police: published in Japan in the mid 90s, but translated recently, it’s an orwellian dystopian novel set on an unnamed Island where memories of certain objects and feelings slowly disappear.
The Nickel Boys: the book follows the lives of two boys sentenced to a reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. A bleak, but important book, with a shocking final twist. TW: abuse, racism, death.
Manga/Graphic Novels
The Girl from the Other Side
Opus: very meta, much like most of Satoshi Kon’s movies. Kon actually never finished this (the magazine he was publishing it on was cancelled) and a last chapter was published after his death after his family found the sketches for it.
Oriental Piano: based on the story of the author’s grandfather, who invented a musical instrument in Beirut in the 1960s, combining Arabic music and a western musical instrument. Sort of reminiscent of Satrapi’s style.
Webtoons
Lore of Olympus (TW: sexual assault)
Clara and The Devil
Non Fiction
The Professor and the Madman: the peculiar and extraordinary tale behind the compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary. TW: self-harm, ptsd, war.
Honourable mentions: The Binding (TW: abuse, sexual assault, suicide. Gay rep.), The Silence of the Girls (TW: sexual assault, death, war), To Be Taught, If Fortunate (bi, ace, poly rep), The Kyoshi Novels (bi rep, f/f relationship).

2020 Creator Wrap: Favorite Works
I will admit I got a lil Emotional that I got tagged in this but I’m so excited to go through it because this year has been SO PRODUCTIVE for me when it comes to writing. Thank you to the legend @that0negayslytherin for tagging me and the other legends, you the real MVP (and also thanks again for setting up the LV fic discord bc that place... really b Wild and really b a wonderful place to motivate each other to be our best.) Legends only!!
Anyhway! Onto this thing... I’m excited.
[rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (or so) favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought to the world in 2020. tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!]
So. Most of my works from this year have been Venji related because I’m still in the deep pit of Love, Victor obsession and idk when that’ll go away. Hopefully not anytime soon because I’m having a great time and fic was an amazing way for me to improve my craft. I do have one piece of original work on this list, but the rest is fic. It’s difficult to choose favorites so I think I’ll go chronologically. A couple of these have graphics but not all of them. Anyway... let’s get into this, shall we.
Arakhne of the Floating Mountain
Tumblr media
So this the first work I completed this year. It’s an original novella I wrote for Wattpad’s Open Novella Contest and it’s a very fun, character-centric story that reimagines Arakhne/Arachne (the one from the legend who gets turned into a spider after challenging Athena) as a lonely lesbian who lives alone on, you guessed it, a palace on a mountain in the sky, until three sisters drop by asking for her to create their coronation dresses for when they become the queens of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. The sisters (Soledad, Luna and Estelle) basically try to court her and it’s a good time. Obviously, I didn’t win the competition but it was still a really fun story for me to write and part of my journey of realizing I can create a writing habit and work on something over the course of a long time, since the only other completed long work I had was for NaNo, which was just binge-writing over 30 days before I had the chance to get bored. If you’re into magical lesbians, check it out!
The stars will love me even if you don’t
Tumblr media
I have so much to say about this work. I started it just on a whim in August after I watched Love, Victor in July and began wanting to actually contribute to the works of fandom. Little did I know that I would be embarking on a journey of 120k words and counting, with 33 chapters. This story deals with a whole random of issues -- from long-distance relationships, substance abuse, mental health problems especially around anxiety and depression/suicidality, toxic relationships, codependency, self-harm, the project of becoming oneself and being able to manage life and navigate the world in a healthy way, all the things. In a lot of ways, it is a personal project. But also in a lot of ways I wanted to correct a lot of ideas we have about what constitutes a healthy relationship and what love should look like. There were many times when I wanted to give up on this project due to frustration and exhaustion, but I continued to work at it. I learned so much about my own capabilities, about developing a writing habit, and about what it’s like to write a behemoth of a story. It isn’t perfect by any means but I appreciate the people who have reached out to me and told me that they learned some things about themselves from reading. This is truly a labor of love and I can see that it already accomplished the goal I set for myself which was to help people. It’s lit. And thank you so much to @callmevenji for the lovely cover!! She’s a legend!!
The Thousand-Eyed Wraith (TTEW)
This was a little one-shot I wrote for the Halloween Venji Fic Fest and it takes place in the world of my original work, The Thousand-Eyed Crow. Basically, it’s about what would happen if Venji ended up in that world and had to deal with some spooky nonsense and eventually ended up joining a cult. It was fun for me because it was more stream of consciousness and post-modernist, which is very different to how I normally write but it was a really fun experiment tbh.
You Only Live Forever (YOLF)
This was another one-shot I wrote for the Fic Fest, but this one was much smuttier and mature than TTEW. I was really inspired by Beyonce’s “Partition” (the song and the video lmao) and thought it would be interesting to put Venji in a world similar to Greendale in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but with s*x magic, so it was essentially a Love, Victor and CAOS cross-over for grownups lol. Apparently it worked out well, though, and they ended up trying to summon Satan which went... questionably. But I had a lot of fun writing this, as well, especially when it came to sorta balancing the old-timey setting with the modern day and the smutty scenes with the softer, fluffier ones.
Part of Your World

So one day I had an idea to write a Little Mermaid-inspired Venji story that would be so sweet and romantic... And so I did. I took a lot of inspiration from several sources -- one, of course, was the Disney version of the Little Mermaid, as well as the original version which is a lot darker and more sinister, as well as mythology around sirens and selkies and just, I guess like, class warfare. So I ended up with a sorta more adult-version of the Little Mermaid where Benji gets attacked by humans and is distrustful of them until he meets Victor who is “not like other humans” and helps patch him up, and they embark on a bit of a whirlwind romance. This has been a treat to work on even though it’s probably one of my least popular fics because I imagine people are coming for something a bit more light-hearted but I’m incapable of writing something that is 100% fun and not chock full of imagery and meaning. I think this has also been the work that showcased and tested my imagery-writing and dialogue-writing abilities the most and brought out my inner poet. And once again a huge thank you to @callmevenji for the fanart, if you haven’t already followed her you should bc she’s a legend.
Dead Men Feed the Fish
Tumblr media
Finally, my last and most recent work is also the story I worked on for NaNoWriMo this year. 63,000 words completed in less than a month, depicting the initial meeting of Venji and the way their romance develops and deepens over time. It’s just (chef’s kiss). I had originally had the idea for pirate!Venji and really wanted to write it because I was inspired by That One Scene in Pirates of the Caribbean, which is probably one of the most romantic scenes I’ve ever seen and between the only het pairing I stan. So I just had to write a story that included this scene and that allowed me to write my dream scenario of Venji out on the open seas being gay and having a good time and going on adventures and having homoerotic sword fights. This story has basically everything -- romance, action, adventure, magic/fantasy, a lil bit of spice/kink, good communication, tension, cute animals, everyone is gay, what’s not to love. I’m also looking to edit and publish traditionally so I’m in the process of fixing all that up now. And once again, thank you to @callmevenji for the brilliant fanart!
Anyway, that was that, and I hope that if you have the time and you get the chance, that you give some of my works a shot because I would be very grateful and I think you will have fun.
I’ll tag @kateis-cakeis, @g531, and I guess anyone else who wants to do this!

End of the Decade Favorite Book Tag
I was tagged by @bookcub to do this a while back and hadn’t had a chance to complete it, however I think it’s a pretty awesome tag so I’m doing it now. Here is a shout out to my 2010 bookish faves.
1. High fantasy books that are obsession worthy
Anything by N.K. Jemisin, who I think might genuinely be one of the Authors Of The Decade: the Broken Earth trilogy if you’re up for something heavy, the Inheritance trilogy if not (although it still has its dark moments).
Other good high fantasies that made my decade: Uprooted by Naomi Novik, The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie, The Young Elites by Marie Lu, The Lady Trent quartet by Marie Brennan.
 2. Urban fantasy books filled with people you want as friends
The Demon’s Lexicon books by Sarah Rees Brennan, I genuinely would want these people as my friends which, given the group, is saying something.
Other urban fantasies I’ve enjoyed: The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky, The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman, and, because this is a decade meme and I have to be honest: Shadowhunters by Cassandra Clare, my OG fictional obsession.
 3. Portal fantasy you fall in love with multiple times
Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire – I’m not a huge fan of the other books in this series but this one is very good.
Also The Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde, Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty, and all of Holly Black’s faerie books from Tithe to Queen of Nothing (I’m counting them as portal because there are kind of two worlds)
4. Novella that just makes you sigh cause it’s so lovely
My second-to-last book of the decade, This Is How You Lose the Time War.
Also Martha Wells Murderbot series, because it is wonderful.
5. Historically inaccurate but laugh out loud
The Falconer trilogy by Elizabeth May. It’s historical Edinburgh! But with fairies! And flying machines! And an apocalypse!
6. Satire that makes you reconsider your whole world view
Not really satire but Uglies by Scott Westerfeld was the introduction little 2010 me needed for feminism, and Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson was my introduction to notions of colonialism and literary critique.
7. Happy, happy, happy and sad, sad, sad
Howl’s Moving Castle and In Other Lands are both my go-to happy reads. And I’m pretty sure my soul still has scars from where it was ripped out by a) The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly and b) A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.
8. No, I’m not to old for kids’ books, what are you talking about???
The Varjak Paw books are woefully underappreciated. Warrior Cats walked so Varjak Paw could run and do Mesopotamian martial art magic.
9. I’m also not too old for picture books either and never will be
I’m going to take this as a graphic novel question and renew my daily plea for everyone, ever, to read the amazing queer urban fantasy splendour that is The Wicked and the Divine.
10. Whoa, never expected that ending and to have that much fun!!!
The answer to this question is just. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir.
11. Like I’m scared, but I’m happy about it
I very rarely read actual horror but all the creepy shit that Frances Hardinge includes in her (children’s) books is quality, in particular The Lie Tree and Cuckoo’s Song.
12. Classically favorite
Ugh, I have dedicated too much of this decade to classics. The ones I don’t resent are: Beowulf, As You Like It by Shakespeare, Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirelees and The Tomb of Atuan by Ursula Le Guin.
13. Party in your ears
The Adventure Zone podcast. It got me into podcasts, and D&D.
14. Boom!!! Pow!!! Wham!!!
Ms. Marvel and The Epic Crush of Genie Lo - both wonderfully written, badass teenager superheroines.
15. Oh wow, that’s me!!
I very rarely see myself in books – I don’t know if that’s part of why I read? Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia is the closest I’ve ever gotten.
16. I can’t stop thinking about this book
Honestly, no one book is this for me. But Cloud Atlas for better or worse was the book that got me into literary studies so I’ll pick that!
17. A book you got from Tumblr that made it to your fave
Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie, Peter Darling by Austin Chant, and the basic bitch nomination, Six of Crows.
18. A book you had high expectations for and then the author OVER delivered
Warcross by Marie Lu. The second book is a little more lacklustre but this first book is just fantastic. Also The Cruel Prince – I already loved all of Holly Black’s fairy books but I wasn’t expecting this to be so beautifully ruthless.
I tag: literally anyone. I’ve been out of the booklr loop for about six months. Be brave! Do the tag! Tag me so I can follow ya!

novel prep tag
tagged by @quilloftheclouds! thank you :D
Decided to do this for Pirate’s Bane, since it isn’t finished yet :D
(So this is the third time I’m trying to write this stupid thing, since apparently, changing window size closes the post---and, of course, a draft isn’t auto-saved.)
Rules: Answer the questions below, & tag some people!
tagging: @aslanwrites; @firesidefantasy; @klywrites; @theguildedtypewriter; @inherentlywritten; @jc-shay; & @marie-writess! (no pressure! anyone else is also free to hop on :D)
FIRST LOOK
1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch).
Five years ago, Alinora learned that Fate had betrayed Eldora, and that she was the only one who could stop her. Now, the only person who knows how Fate can be stopped has lost her memory, and Fate’s Champion is wreaking havoc. Alinora must once again rise to the occasion… but this time, things are going to be a little more difficult.
2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.?)
It’s the second in a seven book series! At least, as of the current planning—that number could change. I’m hoping that this one will be about 85k words!
3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?
Choppy seas; rocky shores; lightning arcing through the sky; a stone fortress overlooking a port village.  Winding roads; tall mountains; ancient ruins; foggy forests. Blackened finger tips; glowing swords; whispers on the edge of your mind; secrets that could change the world. Shadows like mist around legs; ghosts from myriad centuries; old bones; ravens crying overhead.
4. What other stories inspire your novel?
I think the biggest influences would be Lord of the Rings; the Hobbit; Avatar: the Last Airbender; and the Dragon Age series. Each feature large casts; epic adventures; lots of travel; and found family. There’s also major motifs of hope & love in LOTR and ATLA which I would like to recapture as well!
5. Share 3+ images that give a feel for your novel.
Here’s my pinterest board, + 3 images off of it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAIN CHARACTER.
6. Who is your protagonist?
Alinora Mynerva is the main protagonist, but she has a group of friends (though she would categorize them as such at the moment) that I would also place in the protagonist column.
7. Who is their closest ally?
Currently, Elaena—Death’s eldest daughter and Eldora’s first reaper.
8. Who is their enemy?
Kaltain Inerra, Fate’s Champion; the goddess of Fate; the spirit possessing Talitha Jade; and ???
9. What do they want more than anything?
If you asked her that, she would tell you that she just wants to defeat Fate so that she can rest in peace. The truth is a little more complicated. She wants to make up for failing her people; to earn forgiveness for the lives that were lost because of her inattention and cowardice.
10. Why can’t they have it?
Because the only person who knows how to defeat Fate is currently amnesiac. And as for the rest—well. It’s her own forgiveness that she has to seek, and that’s something she doesn’t understand yet.
11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?
That she’s somehow at fault for Mynera’s fall 15 years ago. That if she gets close to people, they’ll get hurt, or they’ll die. That loving people makes her vulnerable, that it’s somehow a weakness she can’t let people exploit. That by keeping people at arm’s length she’s protecting herself.
12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)
How ‘bout a picrew?
Tumblr media
PLOT POINTS
13. What is the internal conflict?
Alinora vs her insecurities / self-loathing.
14. What is the external conflict?
Alinora & co vs Kaltain; Alinora & co vs Fate; Alinora & co vs Tali; Alinora & co vs ???
15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?
Someone dying. Failing.
16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?
Sometimes one is actually three. Disappearing doesn’t always mean dead.
17. Do you know how it ends?
Yep ;)
BITS AND BOBS
18. What is the theme?
Not everything is as it seems. Caring about people isn’t a weakness. Sometimes the power was within you the whole time. It isn’t weak to ask for help; everyone needs to lean on someone sometimes. No one is an island; you can’t do everything alone.
19. What is a recurring symbol?
Corvids (ravens & crows); shadows; lightning; crowns; secrets.
20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)
The world of Eldora is full of magic. It flows through the very veins of the world; and (almost) anyone can use it.
21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?
Absolutely!
22. What excited you about this story?
Aishlynn and Talitha’s roles; getting to see Alinora as Champion; getting to reveal some big secrets; getting to experience Asa and Viviana as more than just background characters.
23. Tell us about your usual writing method!
Usually when I have an idea, I’ll already have some key scenes in mind—usually the beginning, ending, and some middles. I have two plot templates, and I pick whichever one suits me at the time, slip my scenes into it, and fill the rest of out as best I can. I build a pinterest board, & then get writing. I typically write chronologically, but if a scene bugs me enough I’ll go ahead and write it & see how it fits once I get there.

october book round up
Tumblr media
19 books this month, which brings me to 125 for the year, and i’ve officially completed the yearly challenge! :) a little later than last year, but still earlier than i expected. i don’t imagine that i’ll read as much as i did last year, but i can still get a good bit done in two months i think. this month was pretty much just different flavours of romance, once again all audiobooks.
poison kiss - ana mardoll ⭐️⭐️⭐️ mixed feelings about this one. urban fantasy/paranormal with a neat setup and world building, but i feel like the author didn’t tell the story in the most effective way? not enough time spent on certain sections, time skips that were not needed, too many flashbacks. the poly romance was really sweet, though i didn’t much care for the love at first sight aspect when the third character was introduced. but this was a good book overall, with a unique plot and cast; might revisit the series.
the best boy ever made - rachel eliason ⭐️⭐️⭐️ very cute coming of age/ya romance. a conservative country girl is at first shocked when her best friend comes out as trans, but she slowly finds herself becoming his biggest champion, and then falling in love with him. took me a while to warm up to it bc i found the protagonist to be kind of obnoxious. and some of the later plot events were kind of ham-fisted. but i definitely liked it, mostly for sam and how good and kind he was.
i wish you all the best - meason deaver ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ BRUH I’M CRYING IN THE CLUB. this was a really fucking sweet ya romance. the main character finds themselves homeless after they come out as nb to their parents. they move in with their sister, enroll in a new school, and find themselves making friends with (and slowly falling for!) a literal ray of sunshine. this was great, another one of those books i wish i could have read when i was younger. dealt with coming out, depression, anxiety and first love, had great writing, and i’m still thinking about how great the ending lines were.
the neighbour - gerri hill ⭐️⭐️ eh... a book that COULD have been good (woman with a stunted career as a writer moves back home to take care of her ailing mother, finds herself falling for the rich lesbian player next door) but both main characters were so thoroughly unlikable lmao. judgemental, snooty, made jokes about harmful things, kind of elitist... there was one aspect of this book that i really liked (the main character changed careers later in life and it wasn’t seen as a failure, just moving on) but otherwise this was a disappointment.
the turner series - cat sebastian ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ historical romance!!! always a fave. this was a pretty fun series; first three m/m, last one f/f. a bit of mystery and intrigue in all of them, good humour, and a great cast of characters through and through. the second one was probably my favourite; one of the mcs suffered from anxiety attacks in an era where there was a lot of wrong information about mental health, and his love interest (a cheat and a scoundrel) ended up being the best thing that happened to him. although now that i’ve said that i just remembered how very much i love the third book’s protagonist (the rake, to be specific). standout character for sure. the last book has a dear place in my heart bc even though you can tell that the author doesn’t often write f/f, and it was a pretty short novella, it’s still historical lesbians, and i eat up historical lesbians with a spoon. (i could make a pretty bad joke here but lo and behold; i have GREAT self control.)
the secret casebook of simon feximal - k.j. charles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ when k.j. charles is good, SHE’S REALLY FUCKING GOOD. this is a paranormal-mystery/romance book styled after the adventures of sherlock holmes (if you must know one thing about me it’s that i’m a slut for acd holmes, don’t fucking @ me), set in the very universe itself. not quite a pastiche but close enough, and it was so well written, with great world building around the magic and paranormal events, great characters, GREAT ROMANCE. told as stories published by robert, simon’s biographer and lover. i adored this and will definitely reread.
puppy love romance - georgia beers ⭐️⭐️⭐️ a trio of f/f novels centred around an animal rescue, and the women who work and volunteer there and fall in love there. each of these novels was really sweet, grounded in a way that i like for contemporary romance, and they all had adorable dogs in them. and i feel like beers really knows her way around plotting and pacing a novel, especially small town romances. but i also had pretty sizeable nitpicks for each of them lol. part of it is that i just got tired of beers’ writing style (as you can see, i took a break between the series). this is such a weird complaint but oh my god she uses too many adverbs lol. also there was always an emphasis on how amazingly stunningly gorgeously beautiful all six women were and it got so tiresome. idk who wants to read about women who are physically perfect all the time, but it’s not me. and one half of the romantic pair in each book (lisa, emily and sydney, in that order) had attitudes that i found obnoxious and were not resolved and i felt bad for their girlfriends having to deal with them. a fun read all in all, but some of those things rubbed me the wrong way, and i’m ready to take a break from this author.
bound series - ava march ⭐️⭐️ a resounding meh. historical m/m romance that wasn’t bad, but there wasn’t anything great about it. i only read these like maybe a week and a half ago but i’m struggling to remember details. there was bdsm, which i didn’t hate, but i also didn’t care. the plot was bleh, the sources of conflict were weak, and one of the dudes was kind of an asshole. /shrug emoji
reverie - eliza andrews ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ god... GOD. the ride i took with this book was like... a really sexy butch took me out to dinner, wined and dined me, and in the very last course she leaned over and spit in me food. the premise: a woman on the run from her abusive ex-husband settles into a small town where she find herself drawn to the only out lesbian in town, a sweet butch ex-marine, and her mysterious nurse of a neighbour. this book was soooooooo well written, so well crafted, so moving, so beautiful. a paranormal mystery that actual kept me guessing. i was ready to name it the best f/f book i read this year, if not the best romance period. and then the ending. the FUCKING ENDING. i’ve rarely been so let down in my life. i’m looking at the four stars i gave this and wondering if i should go lower because SERIOUSLY. thinking about it is getting me kind of upset. this book could have been SO good. uuuuuugh.
brothers of the wild north sea - harper fox ⭐️⭐️ this is tricky because like. this book was definitely like, not good lmao, but it was good enough that i almost feel guilty giving it 2 stars. this is a historical romance that takes place more than a thousand years ago between a viking and a monk. it wasn’t badly written, probably wasn’t historically accurate but i mean, i don’t care. but it was too long, i didn’t care about the characters, it was badly plotted, and just really confusing overall. i think harper fox is great at writing romance, but all other aspects of this novel fell flat.
escape velocity - anah crow, dianne fox ⭐️⭐️⭐️ sci-fi m/m romance. a linguistic researcher and a pilot struggling with his religious beliefs fall into a whirlwind romance. pretty cute. i found it too short as i find most novellas, but i think the authors did a lot in relatively few words. definitely wish there was more worldbuilding. kind of hope the authors have plans to make this a series.
nowhere ranch - heidi cullinan ⭐️⭐️⭐️ a sweet romance between a farm hand and his boss. i didn’t think i’d like it much, but it was pretty enjoyable! very simple writing stuff that fit well with the gruff, no-nonsense, trying to shut everyone out protagonist. i really liked him; identified with him a lot, and his journey into opening up, dealign with his anxiety and self-worth issues. and the romance was sweet (though oooof, some of the sex scenes were too much). the book went from being really raunchy to really domestic and i kind of liked that. the resolution came a bit too quick, but i enjoyed it nonetheless.
that’s it for october! still currently unemployed, waiting for the people i signed a contract with to call me. since i don’t want to dip too much into my savings i’ve been doing odd jobs here and there, and might take a more steady part-time job in the meantime? all of that to say: i probably won’t be reading as much in november. i’m currently reading the first book in the spencer cohen series, and not... really loving it, lol, so i might pass on the others.

Megan Reads Oathbringer (part last)
I said I’d finish this book before it had been out for a full year, and that’s the 14th, iirc, so I have tonight and tomorrow, but I will finish this book tonight if it kills me, I s2g, I’m ready to be done.
Part 13 encompasses pages 1054-1233 (previous parts)
WE ARE SO CLOSE, GUYS
OH, I wanted to talk a lil bit about the end of part 4, now that I’ve had a sleep and some time to think about it. I still don’t really like it, but I think I can better articulate why.
I feel like a LOT of it is personal preference for Really Not Liking It when my Heroes Turn Out to Have Been Bad Guys All Along. that’s. not fun for me. I don’t find it appealing in any way.
and I know that Brandon is a big fan of his lil ~Sanderlanches~ of emotion, but tbf I think the Recreance bombshell got a little lost in Taravangian’s deluge of bad news. The major impact of that reveal SHOULD have been--yeah, the humans are and have been the aggressors all along. But instead it gets a little undermined and rolled up wholesale into Dalinar Has Been a Bad Before and We Guess He Is Now Too. It feels like it should have been a separate moment for everyone--for ALL the monarchs in the coalition--to realize that...THEY are ALL the bad guys. All of humanity is the bad guys. But it gets overshadowed by their belief that Dalinar has betrayed them and gets dumped squarely on his shoulders so that it’s less about Humanity and more about One Human--who has been our hero for 3,000 pages and now just utterly crashed which is ALREADY upsetting enough without everyone else ignoring THEIR part in it all.
So what I’m saying is that I still feel like the end of part 4 was really badly handled as there should have been two, separate focal moments that got overlapped badly (worldbuilding vs character moments). But I’ve talked to Lisa and Alyx about stuff and I’m a lot chiller with the actual CONTENT of the reveal, and actually looking forward to seeing how that plays out.
tl; dr: feeling better about the content, still very unhappy with the execution.
ANYWAY:
INTERLUDES
“Her people couldn’t be completely gone....could they?” Ah, Venli has reached the Denial stage of grief. that’s. good?
or rather, I suppose...she’s been there all along.
mmmm, I wonder if the different rhythms were created because the Parshendi don’t really do facial expressions, right? like they are crustaceaous, regardless of which form they’re in, so it’s not like shells do a good job at. smiling. Idk, I just wonder if the different hums are bc they don’t really interpret body language the same way humans do.
“The strongest and most skilled of our number are yet to awaken” YOU MEAN THERE’S MORE AND WORSE OF YOU? Great.
You know what I want? An Edgedancer size “novella” about Rysn.
wait, I thought larkins were bad?
aren’t larkins bad?
nvmd, I asked Lisa, they eat stormlight, so Bad For Spren, but not inherently bad. I like having Lisa here to remind me of things I Knew At One Point But Have Since Forgotten Due To Reading So Many Other Things heheh
I love these two Thaylen nERDS
Vstim is a GOOD DAD AAHH
you know, that’s something that’s always sorta bothered me--how do Rosharans go around wearing jewelry that’s giving off enough light to see by? How is that not...overbright and distracting and uncomfortable?
WHOA WHAT
I WAS NOT EXPECTING MURDER
omg the larkin is eating the gemstone that’s been glowing for 200 years, CHIRI-CHIRI NOOO
o_o
right
it makes sense that the voidbringers would have lightweavers, the fused are basically windrunners, but tbh I didn’t think about. you know. evil people that could disguise themselves as ANYTHING #YIKES
yeEAAHH MY GIRL
COME ON BRANDON, GIMME A RYSN ADVENTURE NOVEL. RYSN AND THE LOST TREASURE OF SOMEWHERE-WITH-TOO-MANY-CONSONANTS! PLS.
anyway, on to the main event for the evening: Megan Sobs Her Way Through the Teft Interlude i’m SURE
“the men of Bridge Four would tire of digging him out of trouble” NEVER.
HE HAS A SPREN
SHE’S BEEN THERE A WHILE, APPARENTLY!!??
HELP
uh oh
no
hold on
WHY IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG AT THE BRIDGE FOUR BARRACKS
WHY IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG
NO
NO
ABSOLUTELY NOT
WHY ARE THERE BRIDGEMEN WHO ARE BLEEDING
I REFUSE
I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD IF HE KILLS ROCK I AM NOT FINISHING THIS BOOK
I’M NOT EVEN KIDDING
HE KILLED ETH???? AFTER HE KILLED MART IN THE LAST ONE HE HAD TO GO AND KILL OFF THE OTHER BROTHER? FUCK OFF, BRANDON
NO
I’ DON’T WANT THIS
PART FIVE, LET’S GET THIS DOOOONNNE
........there are thirteen, maybe (probably) more POVs in this part?
fuck, Brandon, if I wanted to hop around that much, I’d suck it up and read Martin. Uggghhhhh, I hate this.
HAHA whoops, I didn’t realize it was a flashback chapter and I was like “why is present!Dalinar in a stormWAGON?” and then I realized
“wild chickens range this far east” and I KNOW they mean crows or blackbirds or starlings, but. chickens. is still. such a good worldbuilding note.
“felt both an anxiety to be finished and--at the same time--a reluctance to progress.” B I G M O O D
Brandon: *describes the Nightwatcher* Me, whispering: “yiiiikes”
“What is your boon?” “Forgiveness.” CAN YOU IIIIMAAAAGIIIIINNE
OH SNAP
is that...actually Cultivation?
“I didn’t get what I wanted.” “You got what you deserved.” OOF. OOF. How does fifteen points of damage taste?!
“I control all things that can be grown, nurtured. That includes the thorns.” HM
OKAY
I like her.
HA I WAS RIGHT
EVI WAS THE COST NOT THE BOON. HA
tbqh, I’m still not entirely clear on the boon. I guess...she took away the guilt? or the memories that made the guilt? hm.
HE HAD NEVER DESERVED HER.
AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA DAMN FUCKING RIGHT, DALINAR. GOD. YUP. AMEN
merrgghhhh pov shits within chapters grumble grumble grumble
oh dear
big battle time.
yaassss
ok, but the army of spren at the Oathgate might be friend spren. have you checked?
I’m still hung up on Kholinar, ngl, someone, for the love of god, tell me if Skar and Drehey are all right. alive. s o m e o n e pls care about these bridgemen as I do.
(and don’t say Kaladin cares, I KNOW HE DOES BUT HE HASN’T MENTIONED THEM IN 200 PAGES/FOUR WEEKS OF TRAVEL TIME, MMKAY?)
heh, Jasnah being all “Amaram’s bad guys can soak up the arrows while the rest of us escape” and usually, I’m very against the lil foot soldiers getting slaughtered for the misdeeds of their commanders, but if people are still following Amaram, they have Bad Priorities and I’m with Jasnah on this one.
I’m confused
Renarin’s spren is weird?
Jasnah thinks he’s a traitor?
I’m??? CONFUSED AND UPSET???
LET! THE BOY! LIVE!
WHICH ONE OF THEM IS CORRUPTED, IS IT JASNAH? MAYBE IT’S JASNAH?
Me: “Maybe it’s Jasnah???? She spent a lot of time in Shadesmar!” Lisa: “Maybe it’s Maybeline.”
She’s rude and I love her.
OH WHAT HOLD UP
VENLI IS IN THE KNIGHTS RADIANT CHAPTER?
or is it just...anyone listed at the beginning can be in any chapter?
SHE IS NOT LISTED SEPARATELY. HO SHIT
WHAT
YEAH THAT’S THE THING THAT BOTHERS ME: The fused just. sending in regular parshendi parshmen signers whATEVER TO FIGHT. THEY DON’T HAVE TRAINING. THEY’RE GOING TO GET MASSACRED. THAT’S NOT! GOOD! MILITARY! STRATEGY!
ugh, I’m still just. mad about the Recreance reveal.
The humans are the bad guys, fine. But the FUSED ARE DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY NOT THE GOOD GUYS??? so what was the point?
SEE SHIT LIKE THIS: “You are here to do as you’re told. In return, you are rewarded with further opportunities to serve.” what the fuuuuuuucckk
like, they’re still BAD GUYS
Here’s the thing--the Recreance reveal doesn’t really change anything. The human heroes are still going to choose the options that are “good” or “right”--Dalinar was already suing for peace, Kaladin was already making friends with the listeners--so saying “these humans in the past were evil” doesn’t change their choices. It doesn’t change the Fused’s choices either--saying “these guys were good in the past” doesn’t make them good guys now--OBVIOUSLY, just look at that dialogue.
So why bother?
The whole series is about choosing to be better, to do better, but the characters were ALREADY DOING THAT, they didn’t need an extra, super depressing motivator to do that. It’s just there to....reinforce the idea? That’s already pretty solid?
idk, I’m still REALLY struggling with this
sigh
back to Venli
hm
so, Odium can CHOOSE what he looks like when he appears--obviously he doesn’t REALLY look like a parshendi, bc he’s not actually their god. If the humans were the voidbringers originally, then he’s theirs, no?
also, # y i k e s, there he is
TEFT IS IN THE RADIANT POV HELL YAH
“You don’t want me. I’m broken.” YES, DARLING, THAT’S THE POINT.
I love him so much I just want to hug this sad uncle of mine
AAAHHH FUCK  THE KHOLINAR GATE
WAIT, MAYBE SKAR AND DREHY WILL SHOW UP FUKIN FINALLY
“This is winnable” IS IT THO
BECAUSE LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE IN THIS BOOK HAS BEEN AND AIN’T THAT JUST FUCKING DEPRESSING
oh fun! the thing from the cover! finally!
Here’s the thing: three years ago, I would have loved this book. Three years ago, overwhelming odds and impossible battles and the downward, angst slide of all my favorite characters would have been SO MUCH FUN to read. But now? This year? I’m fucking over it. I’m done. Give me optimism or give me death.
I’m exhausted enough in the real world, I don’t need to be exhausted by the books I’m reading.

by becoming king of the world and then asking odium to spare everyone he ruled, he was going to save everyone.
Not
actually a bad plan
Not a great one, obviously. but. not a terrible one.
Too bad it was NEVER GOING TO WORK
oh fuck off, he stole the Honorblade, which means Malata probably killed Eth, so GOOD NOW I HAVE A SOLID, CONCRETE REASON TO HATE HER, GOOD.
“Why would [Taravangian] work with the enemy? Everything he’s done so far has been to secure a safe Roshar--if through brutal means. Still, I have to wonder. I can’t afford to be too trusting.” I CAN’T BE TOO TRUSTING, EXCEPT TARAVANGIAN, I’LL DEF TRUST HIM OF COURSE, Dalinar, pLEASE

HE WHO QUIETS --admittedly a great assassin epithet, but
Mooooooaaaaaaaassshhh
S I G H
okay, so we figured out that Sja-anat is anti-odium, that’s good. but HOW do we know that Renarin bonded one of her spren? just...’cause it’s corrupted and that’s what she does? or did I miss something more specific?
oh huh
ok
cool
OH!, he went to get Elhokar’s baby spren. interesting.
does that make Wit a Radiant? ‘cause I bet that’s not going to go over well heheheheh
WHOOOOOO I’M FREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Defo not my favorite, but it did pick up at the end there. Part 3 was A TRIP that I enjoyed and I’m still pumped that Bridge Four got 1. POVs and 2. SPREN that was really nice. I’m ~*~GARBAGE~*~ and there was some good garbage Moash content, so I loved that. The roadtrip was Sure A Thing. I love my sunshine boy, Adolin Kholin with all my heart. Aaaaand I’ll circle back to Part 4 and the beginning of Part 5 when it’s NOT 4am!

Read -> Reading -> To-Read
Tumblr media
Where I’ve been and where I’m going in my reading life!
Just finished: Down Among the Sticks and Bones by @seananmcguire
This is sort of a sequel to Every Heart a Doorway (except that it takes place before Every Heart a Doorway). I definitely recommend reading EHaD first or the ending of this one will feel unsatisfying. That said, this novella was excellent. It’s about two sisters who stumble through a doorway into the world of The Moors, populated by vampires, werewolves, and mad scientists. I would have happily spent more time with these characters and it made me want to re-read EHaD. My heart was twisting even before Jack and Jill’s adventure technically got started. This series officially makes my to-own list!
In the middle of: The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters
This one has been sitting on my TBR for ages because everyone says it’s really good, but apocalyptic novels give me the collywobbles. I was in the mood for a good detective story, though, and this is definitely delivering. I’m a little over halfway through, but every time I think I have the case figured out something happens to make me revise my deductions. An excellent mystery so far, and the enormous asteroid hurtling toward Earth in the background really adds an interesting layer.
On deck: The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes
I’ve been looking for a good fantasy heist novel ever since the Six of Crows duology stomped all over my heart (in a good way!) The Palace Job hit my radar solely because of @ace-artemis-fanartist‘s lovely artwork. I can’t wait to dig in; based on my hesitant, spoiler-wary preliminary research, I anticipate witty writing and a fun cast of characters - and of course, some clever thievery.
See more of Robin’s recs...

Roleplay Preferences Sheet!
Please repost, do not reblog!  Feel free to add to any of your answers!  The purpose is to tell your partners about the way you write!  :)  For the multiple choice ones, bold all that apply and, if you want, italicize if it’s a conditional answer!
– B A S I C S –
NAME: Stefanie ALIAS(ES)/HANDLE(S): I also do Will Graham on savepuppywill, though I’m having trouble getting much interaction out there. ARE YOU OVER 18?  Yes / No IS YOUR MUSE?  Yes / No (Well over for both, except in select AUs) WHEN WAS YOUR BLOG ESTABLISHED?  This year. Recently.
– W R I T I N G –
ARE YOU SELECTIVE ABOUT WHO YOU WRITE WITH ON THIS BLOG? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people) / Private (mutuals only)
ARE YOU SELECTIVE ABOUT WHO YOU FOLLOW ON THIS BLOG? No (anyone) / Semi (most people) / Yes (some people) / Highly (few people) / Private (mutuals only)
IF YOUR MUSE IS CANON, HOW MUCH TO YOU ADHERE TO CANON? Not at all / A little / Some / Mostly / Strictly / NA
(Admittedly I have my own headcanons and such, and in AUs my characters may be kind of different because of their differing upbringing, circumstances, etc, but generally I try to be as true to the characters as much as possible.)
WHAT POST LENGTHS DO YOU WRITE? One Liners / Single-Para / Multi-Para / Novella
(I prefer literate paragraphs with no weird formatting, but it depends on the thread.)
DO YOU USE ICONS AND/OR GIFS? No / Gifs / Icons / Yes
(I will do one or two here or there if that’s your thing, but I find it kind of a pain, and prefer describing things through my writing.)
DO YOU WRITE ON OTHER PLATFORMS? No / Yes: Email
WHAT LEVEL OF PLOTS DO YOU WRITE? Unplotted / Open-Ended Plots (set up a meeting and see what happens) / Semi-Plotted (one or two steps ahead) / Fully Plotted Epics (plotted beginning, middle, and end)
HOW QUICKLY DO YOU USUALLY RESPOND TO THREADS? Very Slow (more than a month) / Slow (3-4 weeks) / Average (1-2 weeks) / Fast (less than one week) / Very Fast (less than three days)
(Depends on school, life, mental health, etc.)
WHAT TYPES OF THEMES DO YOU LIKE? (feel free to add!) Fluff / Angst / Smut / Violence / Tragedy / Domestic / Family / Conversational
WHAT GENRES DO YOU LIKE? (feel free to add!) High Fantasy / Supernatural / Science Fiction / Historical / Horror / Comedy / Romantic / Drama / Action/Adventure / Espionage
ARE THERE ANY THEMES YOU’RE UNCOMFORTABLE WRITING ON YOUR BLOG? (not triggers) No / Yes: I don’t like writing straightbent pairings. (Like when only one character in a gay pairing is genderbent to make it straight.) That weirds me out because it strikes me as vaguely homophobic, and like, there are already so many straight couples on tv anyways...? I also don’t like shipping or writing real life people who are not characters, and sometimes I don’t like writing about mental health issues if that is done poorly or purely for drama, because as a neuroscience and psychology major who has dealt with these things herself, I am a bit sensitive about how those things are portrayed.
I also admittedly prefer to write my characters as bottoming/subbing in the case of mature content, except in extremely rare circumstances. That’s just a writing preference, though, and has more to do with my writing abilities and comfort than anything... Technically I could see Cas being more of a switch. (Aziraphale maybe not so much.)
DO YOU HAVE ANY TRIGGERS?  HOW DO YOU REQUEST IT TAGGED? No / Yes (Basically not. I have preferences, but writing is just writing to me. It’s more exploring ideas than promoting them or feeling them in my book.)
– S H I P P I N G –
WHAT TYPES OF RELATIONSHIPS ARE YOU OPEN TO? Romantic / Platonic / Familial (canon) / Familial (OCs) (Except in very rare circumstances.)
WHAT TYPES OF PRE-ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS ARE YOU OPEN TO? Romantic / Platonic / Familial (canon) / Familial (OCs)
(If it’s an OC or character from a different fandom, I’m going to assume our characters are strangers, unless previously discussed in some depth.)
DO YOU HAVE OTPS? No / Chemistry Only / Yes: Destiel and Az/Crow are almost my default, though I also ship plenty of other things. (This is mainly because I see those relationships as canon parts of the development of my characters, though I will work around those parts of their development in different ways for other pairings I like.)
DO YOU HAVE NOTPS? No / Yes: But very few of them? Like, I’m not gonna ship Cas with Claire, sorry. But I really can’t think of a lot of them.
WHAT IS YOUR MUSE’S SEXUAL ORIENTATION? Heterosexual / Heteroflexible / Bisexual / Homoflexible / Homosexual (Aziraphale)/ Pansexual (Castiel)/ Demisexual (both)/ Sapiosexual / Asexual (both)
I think both Cas and Zira (especially Zira?) do strike me as potentially somewhere on the asexual spectrum, which I would be willing to explore in threads, though I also often ship them as sexual.
WHAT IS YOUR MUSE’S ROMANTIC ORIENTATION? Heteroromantic / Heteroflexible / Biromantic / Homoflexible / Homoromantic (Aziraphale) / Panromantic (Cas) / Demiromantic (Aziraphale) / Sapioromantic / Aromantic (Aziraphale)
Castiel I see as pretty obviously romantic, Aziraphale I would be open to exploring as aromantic, though I usually think he could be romantic, with the right... er... demon. *cough* Crowley *cough*. Though I suppose that’s the only evidence we have of him ever having romantic feelings ever? And they are somewhat subtle.
ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WRITING SMUT? No / Selectively / Yes
IF YOU ARE 18+!!!
HOW EARLY IN A RELATIONSHIP DO YOU SHIP ROMANTICALLY? Autoship / During plotting / After a couple IC interactions / Several IC interactions in / Slow burn / Never (not open to romantic ships)
(Only if the other mun is down for it, of course)
ARE YOU OPEN TO TOXIC SHIPS? No / Selectively / Yes
(I love dark threads, yes please!)
ARE YOU OPEN TO PROBLEMATIC SHIPS? (incest, canon history, age difference, complicated, etc.) No / Selectively / Yes
(Once again. Dark threads. YES.)
ARE YOU OPEN TO POLYSHIPPING? No / Selectively / Yes
ARE YOU AN EXCLUSIVE SHIPPER? No / Sometimes / Yes
DOES CRACK SHIPPING EVER HAPPEN? No / Yes!

Alan Baxter
Alan Baxter is a multi-award-winning British-Australian author who writes supernatural thrillers, dark fantasy, and urban horror. He rides a motorcycle and loves his dogs. He also teaches Kung Fu. He lives among dairy paddocks on the beautiful south coast of NSW, Australia, with his wife, son, and two crazy hounds.
He is the author of the dark fantasy thriller trilogy, Bound, Obsidian and Abduction (The Alex Caine Series) and the dark supernatural duology, RealmShift and MageSign (The Balance 1 and 2), the fantasy horror noir novel, Hidden City, the cosmic horror novella, The Book Club, and the supernatural noir novella, Manifest Recall.
His latest novel is Devouring Dark, an urban horror thriller. As well as novels, Alan has had around 80 short fiction publications in journals and anthologies in Australia, the US, the UK, France, Germany and Japan. His short fiction has appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, and many others, and around thirty anthologies, including the Year’s Best Australian Fantasy & Horror on several occasions. His award-winning first collected volume of short fiction, Crow Shine, is out now. At times, Alan collaborates with US action/adventure bestselling author, David Wood. Together they have co-authored the horror novella, Dark Rite, action thrillers in The Jake Crowley Adventures, Blood Codex and Anubis Key, and the Sam Aston Investigations giant monster thrillers Primordial and Overlord. Alan has been a seven-time finalist in the Aurealis Awards, a six-time finalist in the Australian Shadows Awards and a seven-time finalist in the Ditmar Awards.
He won the 2014 Australian Shadows Award for Best Short Story (“Shadows of the Lonely Dead”), the 2015 Australian Shadows Paul Haines Award For Long Fiction (“In Vaulted Halls Entombed”), and the 2016 Australian Shadows Award for Best Collection (Crow Shine), and is a past winner of the AHWA Short Story Competition (“It’s Always the Children Who Suffer”). Read extracts from his novels and novellas, and find free short stories at his website – www.warriorscribe.com – or find him on Twitter @AlanBaxter and Facebook, and feel free to tell him what you think. About anything.
What are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?
Probably the biggest influence on me is Clive Barker’s novel, The Great and Secret Show.
Two more would include:
Roald Dahl’s short stories (maybe Kiss, Kiss)
Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
I travel a lot, for conventions and so on, and that means I stay in hotels a lot. For some reason, so many hotels don’t have a power outlet by the bed. I recently bought a 3 metre charge cable for my phone and it changed my life!
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
As a writer, every failure is armour against future failure, which means we don’t quit. The default of a writer’s life is rejection, and you need those rejections to make you stronger so you keep going regardless. Then you get to enjoy occasional wins!
Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?
One of my favourite quotes is from Neil Gaiman, in Sandman volume 3, Dream Country: “Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot.”
What is one of the best investment in a writing resource you’ve ever made?
Time. Honestly, you can manage to write with pretty much any tools, even just a pen and paper, but time you have to make. You have to invest in the time required.
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
I enjoy dancing with my dog. No, there will never be video. I’m pretty sure he enjoys it too.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
Remembering that working hard is important – you have to do the work above all else – but that taking time away from the work is also important.
What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore?
They should ignore anything that doesn’t work for them. There are no hard and fast rules other than you must read a lot and you must write. Keep doing that, and the rest will come.
What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession often?
The two I hate the most are “Write every day” – for many that’s impossible and it’s not essential, and also “Write what you know” – sure, you should write about stuff you know, but you should also strive to learn about other stuff and write that too. And make stuff up – this is fiction! – how many people really know about dragons or zombies?
In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
Pretty much everything! There was a time that I would say yes to everything, but I realised a lot of it had little or no value. So now I assess everything I’m asked to do and I’m much more selective about what I’ll take on. But I still try to do as much as possible.
What marketing tactics should authors avoid?
Constantly yelling about their book on social media. You should be social and interesting and just be yourself on social media, then only mention your books when there’s something new or relevant about them. That’s organic and natural and people will stick around. Give them more than you take.
What new realizations and/or approaches have helped you achieve your goals?
It’s not really new, but as I mentioned before, focussing on doing the work is what gets me to my goals. Sometimes I have to move from one project to another and back again, but the approach is always focus on the task at hand!
When you feel overwhelmed or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
I take time out. Rest and recharging is essential. I take the dog for a long walk, go for a ride on the motorbike, go watch a movie – anything that removes me from the work and lets my brain relax.
 Any other tips?
Don’t quit! It sounds trite, but it really is that simple. And always try to be better than you were before.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week’s topic is Hidden Gems – books we think didn’t get enough publicity or aren’t as well known as they should be. Since I read whatever catches my interest, I’m not always reading the latest and greatest. Sometimes I’m learning more about a topic, or reading an old classic that someone recommended to me, or reading a book to fit a challenge topic. So I feel like I’ve come across a fair number of books that I thought were excellent but hadn’t really seen talked about – some of them probably because they’re older.
Little Bee, for example, came out in 2010, but is still an excellent example of a refugee’s experience. Her experiences in London might not be typical, but her reasons for wanting to escape her home country? Heart breaking.
Period came out this year, but is a wonderful, diverse collection of essays on menstruation or the lack thereof.
Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything remains one of my favorite books. It came out in 2004 and was a bestseller then, but it seems like not too many people know about it now. It’s a gorgeous, fascinating book on the history of science, discoveries, and the planet.
Invisible is a nonfiction book on invisible illnesses and how they affect young women. It gets into the social and physical aspects of it as well as how it affects work and relationships and mental health. The book also talks about doctors’ reluctance to LISTEN to women, which other books have gone into more detail about. The topic is near and dear to my heart, as I have at least two autoimmune diseases (and possibly a third) that dictate a lot of what I can do day-to-day.
Tolstoy and the Purple Chair is a book I read for the PopSugar prompt “book with your favorite color in the title” and I am so glad I did! The author made a decision to read a book every day for a year to heal from losing her sister to cancer. She talks about what she read and how it affected her life. It’s a lovely, sweet book that appeals to my desire to escape into books when life is hard.
Cinnamon & Gunpowder is a book I just read, about a chef kidnapped by a pirate. It’s a bit of a twist on the pirate adventure story, and I really enjoyed it. My full review will be up on Monday!
I don’t remember hearing much publicity for Into the Drowning Deep – it’s a very Cthulu-esque mermaid story. I had read the novella that precedes it – Rolling in the Deep – some time ago and was very excited to see a sequel. It’s by Mira Grant, which is a pen name for Seanan McGuire. (She’s a riot to follow on Twitter, by the way!)
Next up are two graphic novels – As The Crow Flies, which is a collection of a webcomic. It’s gorgeous and a wonderful story about a queer black girl at summer camp trying to fit in, but it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I’ve heard nothing about a sequel despite much Googling. All’s Faire in Middle School is the second graphic novel; I just picked it up from the Maryland Renaissance Festival at Page after Page, our book shop. It’s fantastic and really gets the atmosphere of a Ren Faire onto the page.
The last book I’m not sure qualifies as a Hidden Gem or not (it just came out), but I haven’t heard much buzz about it, and I really loved it. The Book of M is a dystopia about losing memories, and it’s an interesting look into what makes a person themselves.

Soooo I have been M.I.A lately because of lack of sleep / new baby, but I thought I would do a fun post to get back into the swing of things… I just so happen to have quite a few series sitting on my shelves that I have either started and not finished or just haven’t started at all.
So I thought it would be fun to list them all and make myself feel bad for not reading them. Yaaay!! So my list was longer than I anticipated so I have turned this into a two or three part series… Could possibly extend to four lol.
The Lunar Chronicles
This series comes highly recommended by @teacherofya and she has ridiculously good taste in books. I ended up going a little crazy and getting the series for my birthday this year! My partner was not impressed with the amount of books I bought for my birthday and I will admit that I may have gone a little OTT but we were on holidays in a town with good bookshops! I don’t know what else he expected!! I still haven’t started it…. I do plan to start it soon.
“A young cyborg begins her fight against a dangerous queen in these smart, romantic thrillers set in a high-tech dystopian future.”
Mara Dyer
These books have always intrigued me!! They sound amazing and I was lucky enough to get them via @teacherofya. Also another series she recommends, I think that the majority of this list will have her seal of approval lol. Another one I haven’t started yet.
Mara cannot remember anything about the night her friends died. All she knows is what she’s been told: they went to an abandoned asylum, the building collapsed, and only Mara survived.
Two months later, Mara is eager to move forward with her life in a new town, but that’s easier said than done. A boy at school named Noah Shaw seems to know more about Mara’s tragic past than she does. And to make matters worse, Mara is beginning to see people and things that can’t possibly be there. Or can they?
When Mara goes searching for answers, she discovers a secret about herself that is most unbecoming. A secret that promises a future full of destruction, pain, love, evolution, and ultimately, retribution.
The Selection
This is one series that I have started!! And adore! This story is pretty much The Bachelor on steroids, with Royalty and it is amazing!!
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined
Matched
In the Society, officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.
Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s hardly any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one…until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.
Matched is a story for right now and storytelling with the resonance of a classic.
How can you not want to read this series!! Plus I picked up the complete series from a second hand book shop for like $10.
The Program
In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.
Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.
Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.
Another series that sounds amazing! This one was also highly recommended by Steph @ Teacherofya. I don’t have the complete series yet but I am getting there! I hate having incomplete series sitting on my shelf!!
Splintered
Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.
I love anything Alice in Wonderland! I feel like all my must read series have been recommended by Steph lol. How gorgeous are the covers!!!
The Lone City
“Today is my last day as Violet Lasting. Tomorrow I become Lot 197.”
The Jewel is a shocking and compelling new YA series from debut author, Amy Ewing.
Sold for six million diamantes, Violet is now Surrogate of the House of the Lake in the centre of the Lone City, the Jewel. Her sole purpose is to produce a healthy heir for the Duchess – a woman Violet fears and despises.
Violet is trapped in a living death, her name and body no longer her own. She fights to hold on to her own identity and sanity, uncertain of the fate of her friends, isolated and at the mercy of the Duchess.
The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Other Boleyn Girl in a world where beauty and brutality collide.
This series was a cover buy! Also part of my birthday haul haha. How could I resist these, just look at the pretties!! Plus they sound intriguing!!
The Red Queen
This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
I have read the first book! Now to read the next two, plus the novella, before War Storm comes out!! I can do this!!
Grisha Verse (and Six of Crows)
I feel like these two just speak for themselves. There is so much hype and love for these books I just had to buy them… Now to find the time to read them.
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy.
Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:
Break into the notorious Ice Court (a military stronghold that has never been breached)
Retrieve a hostage (who could unleash magical havoc on the world)
Survive long enough to collect his reward (and spend it)
Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.
So I am cutting it off there for this post, however there are more series that I want to read / finish so I will be back with a part two!!
Have you read / want to read any of these series? Is there anyone else who can’t stand having incomplete series, even if you haven’t started the series yet?
Series I need to read (or finish)! Part I Soooo I have been M.I.A lately because of lack of sleep / new baby, but I thought I would do a fun post to get back into the swing of things...
