Confession time, I tried reading Gideon the Ninth a couple years ago and it made NO sense I was so confused and either hated all the characters or, more likely, couldn't keep track of who was who I was so fucking confused the entire time. What happened? Got no fucking idea. I think maybe there was character named Gideon? It might have been in space? Bones? Unclear. I hated the experience. I have never been so confused or unable to comprehend what was going on while reading. I think an advanced medical textbook in french would make more sense.

And like I see book reviewers and stuff talking about The Locked Tomb series now and I was like "I know it's a bit cerebral and confusing, but it seems like that is part of the point and people still liked it like why didn't I? I sometimes like weighty stories?? How come I hated it so viscerally?" And I looked back at the Libby history to figure out when I read it and like, guys, I read Gideon the Ninth in January of 2021 after having been in a months and months long reading slump since May that I had only broken in December with Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe; then I read the ENTIRITY of the ACOTAR series that was out at the time (4 books and according to my history i read one of them in 2 days dear lord this was before the hype and i was IN it); reread of Avalon High; and finally started January with Red, White, and Royal Blue.

And i followed my romance and middle grade easy reading experiences that were gently getting me back into reading with fucking Gideon the Ninth. No fucking shit I was confused I was not genre savvy at that moment. I was like in basic predictable trope land.

Anyway I saved myself from a reading slump because apparently I just fucking reread Demon King series and started it's sequel. Which I was slowly able to work my way back up to reading from there.

I guess I should try it again, but the memories of it are so painful. I've never felt so stupid 😅 I was like do I have comprehension skills at all? Do I even speak English? I remember feeling embarrassed listening to the audiobook alone in my car because I had no idea what the fuck was happening 😐

can i just say. and this is probably a niche hill to die on. that i am so gobsmacked every time someone vaguely hints at the idea that jotaro doesn't care meaningfully for the other crusaders, usually particularly kakyoin and joseph, when those two actually tend to be the ones he reacts to being hurt the hardest

like he cares for his loved ones!!!! that literally plays into his character motives in every single part he shows up in!!! stop lying to me!!!!!!!

People who view Wanderer like this fascinate me. Like how was he supposed to. Stay a villain. Completely ignoring how limiting him to being.. 'psychopathic' (not a big fan of using that word in this context) ignores the nuances of his character, how was he meant to continue being an antagonistic force??? We kinda. Crushed any hope that he had abt being able to ascend to godhood. We took the gnosis from him, then gave it to Dottore, who is part of the Fatui- the organization he BETRAYED. Dottore views Scaramouche's attempt to seize godhood as a fun little experiment, but now that he's seen that he failed, Dottore wouldn't be interested in trying again... We backed Scaramouche into a corner, man. He can't do ANYTHING. He can't go back to the Fatui and his literal only goal for the past 400ish years that he was so close to achieving was smashed in front of his face. He can't go back to that previous ambition either.

That's why I don't understand some people's pushback to him.. accepting Nahida's mercy?? And staying with her in Sumeru?? What else was he supposed to do??? And then it's like. Yeah, of course he's gonna internalize some better behavior because yEAH Nahida is a good influence. She stops him from isolating himself and pushes him into participating in things (like in the Darshan event) to allow things in this world to have meaning to him. So he stays. Because.. this undoubtedly makes him feel better. He's so much gentler to people as Wanderer, and that's because he's learning to once again be gentle with himself. Idk, I've always felt that this was a very natural progression...

“Don‘t you know who I am?” It’s instinctive, and it comes out a little more arrogant than intended, but the man before him doesn’t even blink.

“Do you think I care?” he retorts, and there’s just as much bite. It makes anger flare inside of Thomas, hot and prickling at the sheer audacity. The man is shorter than him - only by a handful of inches, but still - he’s smaller, thinner, and obviously not as big a name, but it’s like he doesn’t seem to know that. He stares down Thomas with enough sass and fire to make it clear he considers Thomas a worthy opponent, which– wow. It’s been a long time since Thomas encountered someone this brave.

Thomas has always been good at reading people, always had a knack for picking the needy ones - the desperate, starstruck boys and girls and everything in between who just want to be told they’re wanted, who invariably fall spellbound under his gaze and pliant under his hands.

The fledgling in the second row is perfect. He’s pretty, feathered black hair and pouty red lips, and his dark eyes fix on Thomas with the kind of wonder that doesn’t feel like flattery as much as it does certainty. He knows it won’t take more than a word or two – or maybe even just the right glance – to get him backstage, and then the deal is sealed.

He’s not using them, at least not any more than they’re using him. Everyone gets what they want out of the interaction, which is to say that no one gets what they want. None of the pretty young things get to keep him for more than a night, and he never gets more than a couple hours of distraction before it’s on to the next show, the next city, the next fucking night and he has to do it all over again – wind him up and watch him go.

30/12/24 these two fics were literally just two ideas saved in separate docs with a handful of words in when we thought - why not?

It’s been a whirlwind of like. 30 hours at the very most but here suddenly they exist! Both can be read as standalones, but it’s definitely worth reading both (and not because I’m biased)!!
