Hello! Do you think your conception of magic in YW is influenced at all by computer code? Between High Wizardry and some of the website admin stuff you discuss here, I'm guessing you've coded at least a little.
I'm an actor-turned-librarian who's cobbled together a little bit of coding competency through goofing off. The other day I tried to explain how I conceptualize a coding project and, well, first you need to figure out something's name -- and make sure you're properly specific for the context, you may need a lot of detail in how you name it -- and then you can start figuring out how to persuade it to do what you want ....
So I guess it's sort of a chicken-and-egg question: have I conceptualized coding in the image of my favorite fictional magic systems, or have I been generally drawn to magic systems with a sort of code-y, process-y inspiration?
I wouldn't like to second-guess your in-brain structure. But I can talk about my historical processes a bit, as they may apply to this.
Let me step back slightly. Before* I was a writer, I was a nurse. Before I was a nurse, I was studying to be an astrophysicist. Both of these arts/sciences require a certain sense of the hard structure of the universe—of the ways it requires you to put bits of it together if you're going to get anything useful done. This general outlook has determined, to a certain extent, how I interact with the nuts and bolts of the online world.
More historically speaking: I'm one of an unusual stratum of computer users who were technologically orphaned by the (bankruptcy) failure of the Osborne computer company in the mid-1980s. Those of us who had these machines, and who were at all techie-oriented, quickly became WAY more so in an attempt to keep our Osbornes running after the company went under. We learned how to keep our babies going without any available support, and when we moved on to other machines, we quickly became expert in fixing them... having learned the bitter lesson that when your computer fails, most of the time you're the only one you're going to be able to rely on to keep it going.
We learned to do things for ourselves, from the bottom up: hardware to programming. That mindset has remained with me from then until now.
After my Osborne, I moved from an early Apple (lent by our old friend Michael Reaves) to various early DOS/TRS machines when I moved over to this side of the Atlantic. I wrote Star Trek: The Kobayashi Alternative on a TRS-80 Model 100, gods bless its gentle hardworking heart. (I can still see in my mind the pale, pine-panelled interior of the ancient creaky London hotel, just south of Notting Hill Gate Tube, where I did most of the Trek work while I was in town on other business. I'd hooked the computer's modem to the hotel's phone system with alligator clips.) While Peter and I were later sorting out where we'd live on this side of things, for a long time—before portable computers, except for the TRS—the big machines lived in the boot of the Volvo while we migrated from place to place. And always the alligator clips were there.
Finally we settled in Ireland, and not too long after us, so did the Internet. (But not before I had to go up to Dublin one time, with the alligator clips again FFS!, and show the adorably clueless national telephone company guys how to hook up/in. ...I never pass that building without thinking of it: once Telecom Eireann, then Eircom, then Eir. Now it's a Starbucks. No matter. I remember where to hook the alligator clips in.)
And then, with the internet, lo, there came the (net-oriented) coding. Our first household web site went online in 1995. I handcoded our site's HTML. (Because what's a girl to do: wait for the techbois to make such work accessible or affordable? Bwahahahaha.) I continued to do that until the early 2000s, at which point I moved our sites to Drupal and learned its obscure ways. These days—having decided that Updating Damn Drupal Core Every Week is not what my mom raised me for—I've migrated all our household sites to WordPress, and I like it. I still pay a lot of attention to them, but at least I don't have to custom-code every whole damn page. I'm happy enough to let Elementor do that, while inserting occasional custom CSS, because (a) I have other writing to do, and (b) Life Is Too Short.
(I also used to hand-build our household computers, because (a) money was short and (b) why not know exactly what all your hardware is? But more recently I've started letting Scan in the UK do that. It's another Life Is Too Short thing... and Scan does good work. Lovely tight builds, and good customer service when needed.)
So: yeah, I code. :) Is the Young Wizards universe’s spell structure influenced by that? Uh, yeah. Inevitable, I’d think. Habit is such a taskmaster.
Meanwhile, summing up: I'm fluent in HTML. I'm nearly as fluent in CSS. I have enough PHP to be dangerous (to myself as well as others). I have memories of C that I can dredge up when necessary. I generated most of the Rihannsu language in MS-BASIC, gods bless it. ...And beyond that (as we say around here), deponent saith not. :)
*Or “while”, as I started writing when I was six or seven.

January 1996. Before it became a Harley Quinn thing, BIRDS OF PREY was Barbara Gordon's (barely) crypto-lesbian crimefighting polycule. After Babs was shot by the Joker and summarily discarded by the Bat-books, John Ostrander and Kim Yale reinvented the former Batgirl as Oracle, a computer hacker and information broker who for a while was Amanda Waller's second-in-command of the Suicide Squad. In 1995, Oracle became the costar of the leading homoerotic team-up franchise of the '90s, recruiting Black Canary and later various other superheroines for what was nominally a CHARLIE'S ANGELS type adventure series with Oracle as Charlie.
What's memorable about this initial special, aside from its horny Gary Frank art, is that Black Canary doesn't know who Oracle is except by reputation and as an electronically altered voice on the telephone. However, Dinah is going through a rough patch, so when she comes home to find an answering machine message from Oracle saying she has a dangerous job for her and has already bought her a first-class ticket to Gotham, Dinah decides she has nothing better to do but play out the string. Oracle has gotten her a fancy rental car and a swanky hotel suite, in which there's a throat mic and tiny transceiver that will let Oracle communicate with her (and surveil her, although Oracle already knows everything about her, from her recent breakup with Oliver Queen to her poor credit rating) 24/7:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, Babs not only wants Dinah to do some legwork for her, but also dresses her up like a doll, watches her every move, and is a voice in her ear basically at all times. (The early BIRDS OF PREY stories often have scenes of Babs talking to Dinah from the bath or the hot tub, because that's the kind of series this is.) Rather than being creeped out by this weird stalker/control-freak behavior from an anonymous woman, Dinah says, "Sure, why not?" and decides to just go with it, even after Oracle starts bringing other women into the mix. (It seems pretty clear that when Dinah asks, "Are these your personal taste?" she's asking whether they're what Oracle wants to see Dinah in — which Dinah evidently doesn't have a problem with — rather than whether they're something Oracle herself would wear.)
This being a '90s comic book by right-wing homophobe Chuck Dixon, there are of course various no-homo evasions throughout, but I'm not sure how one is supposed to not read this as kind of gay. The second BIRDS OF PREY story, which teams Black Canary and Lois Lane (and is written not by Dixon, but by Jordan B. Gorfinkel, the editor of the initial special), has this little aside:
Tumblr media
There's no way anyone writing something like this in 1995–96 wouldn't know how people were likely to read this. (Dinah does know that Oracle is a woman even in their first adventure, and while Babs typically distorts her voice when communicating with people as Oracle, it doesn't appear that she does that with Dinah.)
After a while, Dinah does become curious to know more about Oracle, but Babs refuses to let Dinah actually see her. Eventually, though, circumstances force the issue in BIRDS OF PREY #21:
Tumblr media
Dixon's script for this issue contained the following note for artist Butch Guice:
The more drama you can squeeze from this the better. We’re going for The Pieta as opposed to anything that HINTS of the sexual. This scene is apparently RIPE for misinterpretation (or OVERinterpretation.) by some of our readers.
Mission accomplished — no lesbian implications here, boss!
So, as you can see, they have the "be gay" part down pretty well, and you may also be assured that Babs spends this series doing crimes. As a hacker, she of course commits computer fraud on the regular, breaking into restricted and classified systems (she's hacked the military GPS constellation so she can track Dinah, for instance), but she also routinely steals as much money as she needs to finance whatever equipment she needs and keep her girlfriend partner and their ever-growing list of attractive female cohorts in hot cars and fancy underwear. Vigilante superheroes generally take a pretty selective attitude about the law, but the number of felonies this once rather prim policeman's daughter and one-time congresswoman perpetrates honestly puts Catwoman to shame. The stories are frustratingly stupid and the art only gets hornier as it goes on, but what a good series this could have been if it were actually good.

Power Outage
Headcanon: the power is still on in the cave, the company that handles this has overlooked this for decades.
The boys will do anything to get the power back on the cave.
Aka, the boys are vampires, it’s not too far fetched to call them crafty?
Tumblr media
-the boys are crafty lil shits, regardless of being vampires who will sleep on the ceiling in a sunken hotel, they get bored.
-stealing from the library, book stores, and magazines from specialised stores, they learned a variety of information and used that to their advantage.
-and after finding out that the cave somehow still had power? Hell ya. Disregarding the major fire hazard and why the city would still pay for it, they capitalised on this knowledge and bought a souped up TV from the thrift store. It was obviously meant for spare parts at most, but they got it functioning in no time after some scavenging.
-from there they got a working vcr, a NES game system, stole Christmas lights for different parts of the cave, got a working telephone (most likely hypnotising some poor agency worker), and a boombox that could also double as a radio. It was awesome.
-but that luck had to run out eventually. Waking up one evening to find all the power gone.
-now this wouldn’t have been a problem if they hadn’t gotten that taste of freedom they were given, but now that they have that standard, they weren’t going to let it go.
-luckily for them, it was winter, which meant it became night time a lot faster. So after hightailing it to their sire’s house, who was at the boardwalk with his dog, they camped on Max’s phone for 2 hours, growing more irate over the countless holds they were put on as they tracked who was responsible for the power outage in the cave.
-they had successfully gotten a name, and quickly made their way over to the corporate office, about to scare the shit out of the unfortunate overtime workers still lingering there.

Too much rest for the wicked.
For more that ten days at this point I have been struggling to awaken from slumber and this has become increasingly bothersome and intrusive upon my usual schedule of disgusting disappointments. Worse still, while trapped within the unadministered faculties of my own vapid neural lipid blob space I have been thrown into a number of disturbing mental scenarios and decidedly undesirable “dreams” (nightmares) for the sake of no carcass in particular.
I am not, yet once I indubitably am a guest at some sort of well-to-do yet undoubtedly second-rate hotel establishment with walls of cheap taught paper and unoriginal prints claiming to decorate the vacant halls. My place in this languid location rather than my own sullen abode is soon readily made known to me once I “recall” the presence of the worms. The worms made their first appearance within a traditional wall-mounted telephone, wherein worms seemed to wave to and fro in all of its many holes and cracks. The wires connecting electric appliances also appears to be significantly thicker, suggesting a constant system of worms. From this I concluded either that worms had been found out for their unknown richness in electric conductivity and had thus been put in place rather than metal wiring or that worms had become attracted to technology and electrically charged regions. The latter would seem more viable in light of later information as I saw lighting fixtures and wall-mounted television screens being inhabited by swarms of teaming worms.
Tumblr media
While the dialectic usage of “worm” may depict a very particular vision in one’s mind, that being a limbless invertebrate like an earthworm, in the sense that “worm” was utilized here suggests that it was being used to describe many creatures from maggots to millipedes, their true commonality being shown in their shared unusual behavior. The whole of our modern digital world seemed to be infested with the essence of the worm, wherein the more elevated symbols of our contemporary advancements were being used instead as barracks for an oncoming wormpocalypse. Or, the wormpocalypse as it was to already be seen.
Tumblr media
Down the sickly pale hall and two lefts to the right, what lay before me appeared to be the remains of (my mind meat’s vague approximation of) an American folk musician. All about his grotesque form writhed a myriad of worms doing away with his flesh, his body posed in such a way to suggest that he had merely been lazing away calmly rather than being violently overwhelmed by the incursion of worms hungry to feast. In this sight I now recognized the reality of the worm of the worlds, how the many vessels of man were being rendered disassembled by endless tides of the worm who had taken up residence in all of their technology. And still I considered if it had been man who had installed the worms, knowing not of the eventual folly of this choice.
Contrary to unpopular disbelief, I still inhabit the waking hours when the gaze of the burning sky is brought unto the crust and the green warmth of the world is felt dearly. I look into the pots of my many nurtured plants, I look into the dank plastic pit suitable for refuse, I look into the sweetest and most tender of all good seasons’ fruits. Worms. Worms have made themselves into all of these things I say, this I have observed. I often regard dreams and nightmares as reflections of our own surface level contemporary anxieties contacting and concocting among our bathic sensibilities which rest deep within our psyche. I think these things verily, so then what of the worms? Have I been rendered a scion of the worm of the worlds?

OK ... 'bear with me' ... been so difficult to bring you all this wonderful brief video! If you 'click' the usual 'Forward Arrow' ... you will be 'denied access' ... so please do that ... and then I think you can 'click' on the 'expression' "Spring Break Women..." on the YouTube 'system' line below the picture ... to watch ... enjoy ... and savour this! ... X
I would like to say more ... to say what I think! ... X
About how this expensively dressed young woman ... she's so pretty, isn't she ... and she thinks so too! ... the blonde in her 'designer' sunglasses ... and cream linen jacket ... so very gorgeous ... and so attractive, too!
How she falls ... 'Oh dear!' ... into the deep, fetid waters of this canal ... it's so unfortunate ... but so lovely for us all to watch!
She has absolutely no idea ... whatseover! ... about how to 'disembark' this 'overcrowded' boat!
And so is 'caught' ... 'betwixt' ... boat and bank ...
And is 'obliged' ... to fall into the water ... but just to 'her shoulders' ... so that's OK ... isn't it? ... X
No!
It isn't!
Her 'designer bag' is filled with water:
- Her mobile telephone ('smartphone') destroyed beyond any repair by a myriad of electrical 'short circuits' throughout its 'semiconductor' components ... its 'memories' ... caused by the ingress of the canal water ... her contacts gone! ... her mobile (internet) banking gone! ... the key to her hotel room gone! ... her tickets home gone! ... everything in the 'virtual world' she relies (or should we say now, has relied on so!) gone!
- Her personal computer suffers the same fate! But this is at least as serious! Because it holds (or I should say held!) her 'final draft' PhD ... her 'Doctorate' (or should I say ... that Doctorate to which she aspired!): But: she should have 'uploaded' her work to the university's and her sponsor's IT 'Cloud' systems ... but it wasn't just she 'couldn't be bothered' ... no, not at all! ... she just hadn't 'got round to it' ... not prioritised it! So 'unwise' of her! ... and now it's all gone too!
She's helped out to the bank ... apparently by a male 'passer-by ... he's apparently quite disinterested, though ... then he helps another woman ... and in the resulting 'confusion' ... and perhaps because of her shock and disorientation ... the blonde young woman is pushed ... if not shoved! ... back into the deep water of this canal! Such a mistaken misadventure no one meant to happen to her! It's a shame.
But on the other hand:
It's so lovely to see! She takes a complete immersion, this time! ... and disappears from view ... beneath the surface of this unsavoury water ... with her bag still being worn too!
She receives a thorough ducking! I love it! ... X
How prettily she rises to the surface! Mmmm ... X
And swims a few breast stokes back to the edge!
It's so sensuous to watch!
She knows her lovely brown boots ... which she's saved up for, fo so long! ... are ruined ... the glossy leather of their toes which she'd so lovingly polished, every evening since she purchased thrm ... 'scuffed' and damaged beyond repair ... as she'd first fought for purchase on the concrete canal bank and then been dragged up it ... and would be again!
She waits attention from this disinterested male again, standing on a ledge she's found ... by chance, of course ... in the concrete canal bank.
She's not only still shocked and disoriented ... but now ... as she is hauled unceremoniously from this canal ... increasingly distressed ... she is in tears ... and becomes increasingly distraught!
Her party in the boat return to feign sympathy ... indeed, they are mostly quite amused: except for one woman who steps from the little boat as nimbly as the now distraught young woman should have done! ... she in the indigo blue jeans, I think ... yes, she feels she should ... and is prepared to take responsibilty for the care of this unfortunate young woman.
The young woman knows she's (largely) caused herself such damage ... by her misfortune! ... or more lilely, she realises ... her ineptitude, clumsiness ... and arguably, crass stupidity.
At the moment ... as the video draws to a close ... so beautifully, with her walking ... soaking wet ... towards the bar where they, the party she was with were headed, while she is taking stock of her losses ... and her public humiliation, too! ... she has no idea ... as yet ... that:
As her clothing starts to dry, cloying to her body, she will start to 'smell' ... to others in proximity ... of the canal ... of the various deposits contained within its deep, sometimes stinking waters ... its pollutants ... and so on! ... quite unlike her usually sweetly fragranced self!
But the woman ... who as we've seen ... stepped with such alacrity to the young woman's aid ... will know ... and understand ... that this younger woman will need her help ... indeed, probably more than any young lady she has previously met requires the succour she can provide.
Everything will be all right. X

sunset gazing from the porch, wine drunk late night texts and calls to ghosts, paint stained fingers, always remembers your name, a wild spark that devours from within, an ipad pro and sketchbook weighing down her bag, a faint accent from a distant life, and eyes that can't hide the pain of unfulfillment
Trigger warnings: death
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Angelia’s earliest memories are of running around the resort hotel both of her parents worked at. Her mother was a desk clerk and her father was a groundskeeper. They were a small but happy family that loved smiling and the company of each other. It was Angelia’s childhood where she remembers feeling the most love in her life. Even before she could walk her body was in motion trying to dance and wiggle around. So once she’d taken those first steps and elated her parents, Angelia was enrolled in dance class with what little money they could set aside for it. Sometimes each of her parents worked overtime and extra shifts just so that they could afford things for her, and their sacrifices and hard work has never been forgotten. Passionate, competitive, and a bit of a perfectionist, Angelia excelled in dance and began performing with a dance team all over the city. No matter how tough the schedules her parents had they always made it to her recitals and performances. Even more, they always expressed just how proud they were of her..
When Angelia was 15 there was an incident at the hotel resort and her father ended up as collateral damage in trying to intervene and deescalate a terrible situation. The sudden loss was devastating to that small, close-knit family. Angelia and her mother ended up moving not long following her father’s funeral to Wilmington, North Carolina where her mother had obtained a job transfer. There was a lot to work through when it came to immigration, but seeing as Angelia’s aunt and her mother’s sister had made the move some near 10 years earlier she helped the grieving pair through the process. The loss had tormented Angelia’s mother so much that home didn’t feel like home anymore. Without her father her mother couldn’t stay in Lima and be reminded of him everywhere. Plus, she needed to be close to her sister.
For the teenager the move was difficult. Not just because of losing her father but also due to transitioning to an American school system where her strong Peruvian accent proved to be a challenge. Angelia had always been fluent in English, she’d been raised speaking both languages, but Spanish had always been the preferred and most spoken in her household. Too often, out of habit, she would slip into Spanish when speaking. Angelia struggled in school but that led her to discover an unknown talent— she could draw and draw quite well. She began filling up notebooks of sketches and doodles, at first not really thinking anything of it, until she came across an ad placed by a local publishing company. They were looking for a book cover artist. Out of curiosity Angelia applied and interviewed, showing her notebooks full of her abilities. They tested her, gave her a book synopsis and a note from an author and told her to return it in a week with mock covers. Angelia blew the executives away with her creations and she was hired immediately. They loved her interpretations but the job didn’t pay the best and the then 20 year old had to take up work at a local bar as a waitress and then eventually a bartender.
It was tough juggling everything at times, especially since she also liked to travel and see a bit of the world, but Angelia actually really loved her life. She loved being an artist and loved the social aspect of working in a bar. Eventually her talents would be snagged by a bigger publishing house and a much better paycheck would come her way because of it. At that time Angelia came upon yet another job opportunity on a whim. Audiobooks were on the rise and the publishing firm had just begun devotinga department to that medium. After overhearing talk of needing narrators and voice actors she offered herself up despite having zero experience. How hard could it be narrating a book?
It turned out to be very tough and required a lot of patience and skill. But, like everything else, Angelia was determined to become good at it. Now, she’s sought out by authors by name. For two reasons.

The Fremont Street Experience (FSE) is a pedestrian mall and attraction in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The FSE occupies the westernmost five blocks of Fremont Street, including the area known for years as "Glitter Gulch", and portions of some other adjacent streets.
Owner
FSE, LLC
Length
0.8 mi
Location
Las Vegas
East end
Las Vegas Boulevard
West end
Main Street
Construction
Construction start
September 16, 1994
Completion
July 1995
The central attraction is a barrel vault canopy, 90 ft high at the peak and four blocks, or approximately 1,375 ft, in length.
While Las Vegas is known for never turning the outside casino lights off, each show begins by turning off the lights on all of the buildings, including the casinos, under the canopy. Before each show, one bidirectional street that crosses the Experience is blocked off for safety reasons.
Concerts, usually free, are also held on three stages. The venue has become a major tourist attraction for downtown Las Vegas, and is also the location of the SlotZilla zip line attraction and the city's annual New Year's Eve party, complete with fireworks on the display screen.
Fremont Street had Las Vegas' first hotel (the Hotel Nevada in 1906, present day Golden Gate), first telephone (1907),first paved street (1925), first Nevada gaming license — issued to the Northern Club at 15 E. Fremont St, first traffic light, first elevator (the Apache Hotel in 1932), and the first high-rise (the Fremont Hotel in 1956). The Horseshoe was the first casino to install carpeting, while the Golden Nugget was the first structure designed from the ground up to be a casino.
For many years, the western end of Fremont Street was the area most commonly portrayed whenever producers wanted to display the lights of Las Vegas. The large number of neon signs earned the area the nickname "Glitter Gulch".
By 1992, 80 percent of the Las Vegas casino market was on the Las Vegas Strip. Downtown Las Vegas hotels and casinos sought to build an attraction that would lure more visitors to their businesses. After Paramount Pictures head Stanley Jaffe refused to approve a proposal to build a life-sized Starship Enterprise, the Fremont Street Experience was chosen as the project. FSE, LLC is a cooperative venture, owned and operated by a group of downtown hotel/casino companies (comprising eight hotel/casinos) as a separate corporation, responsible for financing, developing, and managing the Fremont Street Experience.
It was the second Las Vegas project of architect Jon Jerde, whose firm was paid approximately $900,000 by the City of Las Vegas to create a show concept for the downtown area. Jerde's design included a floating sky parade which was to be suspended from the canopy. The concept was accepted by the Fremont Street Experience as well as the City of Las Vegas. Ultimately Jerde's sky parade concept was scrapped, but the architectural design for the canopy was carried through.
The local architect of record, Mary Kozlowski Architect Inc., cited the following as problems with Jerde's sky parade concept:
Perspective: The view of the parade from below made the concept unworkable — to properly view the project would require that visitors stand at a raised elevation such as a third or fourth floor vantage point.
Wind: The addition of the canopy over Fremont Street would create a wind tunnel causing a dangerous condition for people on the floats who would be trapped. Also the potential for harmonic motion as the floats swung back and forth in the wind potentially resulting in massive structural failure of the canopy and fatalities.
Sand: The combination of desert sand and the mechanical systems of the sky parade would make the attraction difficult to maintain.
A new concept for the show was necessary quickly as funds were already available and the overall schedule was set. The concept for the show as it now exists was conceived by architect Mary Kozlowski who had grown up in Las Vegas and knew and loved Fremont Street. It was a light show on the underside of the canopy — the world's largest and most spectacular. Peter Smith, executive vice-president of Atlandia Design, recognized the beauty and practicality of the concept. Jerde, FSE and the City of Las Vegas embraced the show concept.
Kozlowski's concept was to use a combination of four colored light bulbs per "light" which allowed a full spectrum of colors. The Young Electric Sign Company assisted in creating the test panels and in the final installation. After the Fremont Street Experience opened, the light bulbs were checked nightly to ensure that all were functioning properly. To accomplish this massive undertaking, the length of the canopy was divided into panels. Each panel was checked by separately turning on each of the four colored light bulbs. A maintenance worker on a lift would then replace any bulbs that were out. The most expensive bulb cost nearly $15 to replace.
The canopy was expected to cost $63 million. Downtown casino owners pledged $18 million to help pay for the project, and they supported a two-percent increase on room tax for most downtown hotels. The Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency also agreed to provide approximately $27.6 million to build a parking garage and pay for street improvements. The city wanted the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to pay a remaining $6 million for the project.
On September 7, 1994, a five-block section of Fremont Street was closed to automobile traffic for good, and groundbreaking was held on September 16. After that, the digging up of the street and the installation of the support poles continued into December. On February 15, 1995, the space frames were brought in and the roof began to take shape. The last piece was installed in July 1995.
The official public preview was held in conjunction with the Nevada Symphony. The light show was opened on December 14, 1995. The first New Year's party was held on December 31, 1995.
In 1996, a horse-and-rider neon sign from the Hacienda hotel-casino was placed at the FSE's east entrance, at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street. It was added by the Neon Museum.
Permanent stages were added in the early 2000s, eliminating the need to bring in temporary stages for every event. The sound system was upgraded in June 2001.
On June 14, 2004, a $17 million upgrade was unveiled that would feature a 12.5-million LED display and more color combinations than the original display, which was composed of incandescent lighting.
The initial $70 million investment and the continued improvements have resulted in successful and ongoing downtown redevelopment. The City of Las Vegas and the downtown casinos have benefited as more than 60% of visitors to the downtown area are lured by the overhead light show and stage shows and stay to enjoy the attractions of the nearby casinos.
A $32 million renovation of the video screen began in May 2019 and was scheduled to conclude six months later. New LED lights would make the screen four times the resolution and seven times brighter than before. The upgrade was designed and constructed by the Illinois-based Watchfire Signs. Also in development was a smartphone app that would allow visitors to choose the next song to be played on Fremont Street, and would also allow them to watch the canopy show on their phone. In November 2019, plans were announced for a new LED sign, 27 feet by 14 feet, that would show images of Fremont Street throughout its history. The sign, part of the $32 million renovation, would be built on the east side of Main Street and Fremont Street, and was expected to be operational the following month. Work on the canopy video display was concluded as of December 2019, with the official unveiling scheduled for New Year's Eve.

More character ideas that expands on the game concept in this post. Like before, more info is below readmore.
Tumblr media
Phutredhaz is a demon of rot and biological decay. She's a very demanding and dangerous entity, but She needs people to sacrifice fresh bodies to Her. She used to have a cult inside the very hotel, but the cultists didn't know how to find new members and eventually started dropping like flies from the a spreading Disease and infighting. Now, She finds random, often desparate and mentally unwell newcomers of the hotel and just forces them to do tasks for Her. She's not smart at communicating. In fact, Her ideas of how humans act are quite a few centuries behind. She does not know how to do small talk and often tells people things without explaining the context or reason behind telling them. If you are nice and obedient, She will do Her best to be polite and reward you in return. However, the rewards are not really good nor useful for the average human being. She will appear in the game suddenly after the the hotel room turns red, then She will abruptly force Desmond to collect rat bodies around his room in a limited time. Only after a few minutes have gone back will She realize She has to explain to Desmond how he would have to do it, and the timer will reset for this one time. After this, She wouldn't explain anymore when She appears. Desmond will have to collect a set amount or else She. well. She kills him. Phutredhaz will usually appear in times where Desmond is not too busy.
Wet Clench was a science experiment gone horribly wrong. They were meant to study ways to allow humans to regrow lost limbs, but I guess they should have given the creature dead human body parts to replicate first. They escaped and found their way to the plumbing system of the hotel. Worm kills by enveloping humans into their large circular mouth and quickly consuming their body to become another set of arms and hands. Their body is gooey and flexible as slime, allowing them to come out of faucets in the hotel. Worm has the intelligence of a 6-year-old and tracks by scent, taste and texture. Mess around with the pipes and run in funny patterns, and they'll likely fumble and give up for a while. Oh, and if you can't tell, they stink!
Melvin Tanjung... Melvin Tanjung. He stays in a room just beside Desmond's. Desmond's 411, Melvin's 412. An alcoholic computer programmer still angsty from his last breakup with a girlfriend he met at a giftshop. He also has the Disease, and even worse at taking care of himself than Desmond. He will either communicate with Desmond exclusively through walkie talkies, telephones or cellphone. I haven't decided which one yet as I am stupid and don't know the details of how modes of communication work. Either way, when he first tries contact you during early-onset Disease, you can choose whether or not to respond.(Melvin and Desmond have NOT ever met before this, btw.) Nick will highlight the choice of not responding since I think most players will just go for it. Anyways, Melvin helps you a lot with the computer, controls and item aspect of the game, making getting valuable information and fighting certain monsters a lot easier.(e.g. he will allow you to unlock certain functions of items faster, and fight against a specific computer-based monster) You just have to help him with pipes and stuff. I haven't figured out specifics yet, but it'll be made very easy so the players will clearly see an advantage in helping him. However, he will slowly crumble under the Disease whether you help him or not. The difference is that once you helped him, he knows where you live! You'll have to keep in contact with him, or else he might just go over the edge and I don't know, think you died and break into your room and all. He will be voice acted, and his audio won't be able to turned off when he communicates with you, even when he is screaming and mumbling as parts of his body melts off while he cannot die. I don't know. I just think it's a cool idea to have agonizingly unpleasant audio that plays all the time as a price to pay for benefits. Jesus. What the fuck.
Janitor Jenny will be encountered primarily outside your room. He prevents you from going to prohibited areas and using items that you shouldn't. There's also curfew. Why is there a curfew. Who knows! She is Janitor Jenny and she has been the janitor of the Huddled Inn for a very long time. Yes. She is Janitor Jenny and she loves gardening and cleaning and yes she is Janitor Jenny. Nothing wrong with him. He protects the building and stops guests from getting into trouble that might threaten the security of the hotel. Ah yes. Right. Do not contact authorities. Do not dirty the walls and floors. He is Janitor Jenny and he loves his job. Katna Jenny died a decade ago. Eh. Doesn't matter, it's fine. Who cares. She is Janitor Jenny and he is so good at his job.
