Beak Full of Breakfast
Tumblr media
This is a detailed shot of a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) who was around yesterday. The jay is gathering peanuts, you can see two here, one in its mouth and one held in the end of its beak. The jay looks lit it recently went through a molt and its head feathers are growing back.
"The oldest known wild, banded Blue Jay was at least 26 years, 11 months old when it was found dead after being caught in fishing gear. It had been banded in the Newfoundland/Labrador/St. Pierre et Miquelon area in 1989 and was found there in 2016."

Face to face with an Atlantic puffin. These beautiful and weird birds spend their time at sea and return to the coast in spring for breeding. One of the colonies lies on the island Runde in Norway and I had the opportunity to see them up close – really close – this weekend. It was an amazing experience and I hope to visit another time and do the boat tour around the island.
Photo: Foe Rodens The photo is available for purchase via my Redbubble and Society6 store.

Stubborn Bird
Tumblr media
Yesterday, among the hundreds of goldfinches flittering around my backyard. I saw this house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus). I was taken by his coloring, which is a bit more on the orange side than most house finches that I see around here. I only had time for this one shot. The look on the bird's face reminds me of Ben when I'm talking to him, and he just stares back at me.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Feathered Crown
Tumblr media
This tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) was around yesterday. These birds rarely sit still long enough for a photo. You almost have to know where they will be before they get there. In this case I got lucky I was taking photos of dozens of small birds and one happened to be this bird.
"A little gray bird with an echoing voice, the Tufted Titmouse is common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders. The large black eyes, small, round bill, and brushy crest gives these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twig-ends, and drop in to bird feeders. When a titmouse finds a large seed, you’ll see it carry the prize to a perch and crack it with sharp whacks of its stout bill." - allaboutbirds.org

My Kingdom.
Tumblr media
This hawk was in an oak tree outside my backyard fence this morning. I tried taking a photo through the storm door because it was raining. But some leaves were covering the head of the hawk, so I made a hasty waterproof cover for my camera and went out into the rain to get some photos. I think that this is a Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) based on its size, but it could be a sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus). I'm basically guessing between the two they look so much alike.
Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high-speed pursuit of other birds. … With their smaller lookalike, the Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawks make for famously tricky identifications. Both species are sometimes unwanted guests at bird feeders, looking for an easy meal (but not one of sunflower seeds).

A Moment with Nature: The Carolina Chickadee
Tumblr media
“Amidst the delicate branches, the Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) perches gracefully, its feathers catching the soft sunlight. A moment frozen in time, where nature’s secrets are shared through subtle melodies.” - Copilot with edits

Graceful in Greenery
Tumblr media
"A female red-winged blackbird perches gracefully amidst the verdant foliage.” - Copilot with edits
I drove out to Alligator Lake this morning while it was still cool out. I started snapping pictures almost immediately and it when ready to leave I noticed that my camera's settings were still set up for shooting the moon. This photo of a female red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) turned out okay.
As I've mentioned, I have a gallery of my favorite photos at: https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
Go there and take a look. Prints are for sale along with other doodads and I suppose it is kind of a business for me. But it's the kind of business where I don't care whether I sale anything or not. If you want something, by all means you are welcome to make a purchase. But I just want you to visit and maybe mark your favorites or leave a comment. Cheers 😄

Feathered Queen
Tumblr media
I've received inquiries about how to get prints of my photographs. Since photography is just a hobby for me, I wasn't initially set up to handle these requests. However, I truly enjoy what I do and want to share my work with others.
To make it easier, I’ve created an account and website with Pixels. You can visit it here: https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
If you’d like a print of one of my photographs, you can find it there. If the one you’re looking for isn’t available, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to upload it for you."

Cooper's Hawk in the Sun
Tumblr media
Here is a Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) that I photographed some time ago. The hawk was kind enough to sit still for a couple of minutes while I snapped photos. Eventually, the bird flew away, but not before I captured enough images to last for months.
If you're having one of those days and feel like you need an escape, take a moment to click the link below. You'll immerse yourself in a world of birds and other wonderful things:

A Dove Above
Tumblr media
This is a mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) on a thick branch in an oak tree. It is a rather pleasant looking view of the bird.
"The Mourning Dove is the most widespread and abundant game bird in North America. Every year hunters harvest more than 20 million, but the Mourning Dove remains one of our most abundant birds with a U.S. population estimated at 350 million." - http://allaboutbirds.org You can browse through a collection of my favorite photos at my photo gallery, visit: https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
