Rána and The Angler
Exploring some art of a TTRPG character I designed a few years ago but haven't had the opportunity to play. Rána is a monster hunting merfolk from a lineage of manta, mako and orca origin. Tall, wiry and tough, she's able to wield her whale-bone hook weapons using a combination of brute strength and substantial finesse - both underwater and on land. She harbors a fascination of the strange world outside her home in the depths, but also a distaste for freshwater

“Tinkers with home appliances (bad habit)” Me too, Marina. Me too.
(I wonder if Pearl has ever walked in on Marina sitting in a pile of deconstructed toasters with an absolutely devastated expression.)

I can't stop thinking about pairing this guy:
Tumblr media
with this guy:
Tumblr media
Just something about the absolute goofball energy of the first, running into the megalomaniac energy of the second. I feel like President Loki would be all "I am here to rule and nothing's going to stop me!" and the Mobius variant would be confused but on board and also distracted by a dish on another table: "Oh yeah? Cool, cool, tell me more. Hey, are you going to eat that?"
ETA: I ended up writing a short thing for this idea. Adding a link here in case the one in the reblogs isn't obvious.
There is now a 4+1 expanded version up on AO3!

Going along with my Mist heritage HC's for Iruka and the fact Mist ninja canonically known for their swordsmanship... Iruka could fucking body Kakashi in a sword fight. He goes from "you would beat my arse in 5 mins" to "Try Me Bitch" the moment he gets a sword in his hand. Spars with Kakashi this way and ends up pinning him to the floor with the blade pressed to his neck and Kakashi is just laying there like "Sure hope this hasn't awoken anything in me" and then spends the rest of the day and night thinking about how fucking hot it was
"Do you think I have a competancy kink" he asks Kurenai to which she gives the most telling side-eye of their lives

Connecting dots tonight (didn't connect shit, I've connected them, etc) because of this post about item descriptions to do with Sampo I saw a few days ago and! I feel like there are so many interesting things that could be implied from this!! Because the recipe for the High-Tech Protective Gear is given to you by Bronya (before the IPC invaded Belobog!), who says this little interesting tidbit about it:
Tumblr media
This is an item from before the Eternal Freeze, 700 years ago. Even to the rest of the universe, it would be SORELY outdated. It cannot be made in Belobog anymore due to the loss of entire eras. It is effectively useless; this recipe had to be somewhere gathering dust, kept around solely for archival purposes. There is no reason for Sampo to know about this item or have any idea how it works and yet. AND YET. He's just running around selling knock offs!!
He shouldn't even know how to make these, but the fact that he does means Sampo either
had the blueprints from off-world before he came to Belobog (most likely but also most boring answer)
broke into Qlipoth Fort and copied down the blueprints (completely plausible - he's possibly shown doing exactly that in his splash art)
found another copy out in the ruins of the old world (also completely plausible - Sampo is astoundingly resilient against both the Fragmentum and the cold, as noted by Lynx haha)
Meanwhile, the Inferior Protective Gear recipe comes from an NPC in the underground, and when she gives it to you, she talks about building robots and the robot fighting scene sorry about the quality I didn't have screenshots for her dialogue so I had to use wiki
Tumblr media
Which makes me feel like it's safe to say that the inferior gear is mostly being used in the underground, especially by the vagrants and their robots for fights, because...well, who else would use it? Cocolia has made it illegal to explore too far into the Snow Plains, and besides, it's way too dangerous for most civilians even WITH gear. The Silvermane Guards are funded by official sources, they have no reason to rely on Sampo for armor. So it makes sense for an underground mechanic to know the recipe; there's probably not as much market for it up in the overworld.
And if you look at the descriptions, you can see why this probably wasn't something that could be made in Belobog anymore; it requires a charging system of some sort.
Tumblr media
We know it's not a problem with the basic materials because all three ingredients can be found right in the administrative district. But the underground only has two of them; somehow, despite being in the planet's crust, and literally crawling with robots...there is no metal down there. It isn't found anywhere, sold by anyone, or dropped by anything. And metal just so happens to be the one ingredient Sampo replaces in his knock off version.
The Inferior Gear uses trash instead, something which, going by the words of that same mechanic, is MORE than abundant in the underground- any good quality parts are extremely difficult to come by down there.
Tumblr media
Anyway, all his shadiness aside, I love the implication that Sampo is smart enough to be able to take this item that no one else on the planet probably knows anything about, and was able to figure out what he could replace, and how, and with what, in order to make it easily accessible to the people of the underground, even without access to overworld resources. Because his version DOES work! It literally gives you the exact same amount of defense boost as the IPC one!
Tumblr media
Someone should absolutely still knock him around for it, though, world's most slappable face fr fjkdsjfdkjafk

CANNOT stop thinking about how for the most part this whole duel links event Yuri has been very Often and Adamantly referring to the Reunification of the Yuboys as a Present Tense Event, something that's still actively happening (which he isnt.. technically wrong about, since we know from dialogue from back in Yuto's event that the actual 'real life not VR' yuboys are still in yuya's soul)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that last one especially gets me--there's been a whole underlining narrative this event about the yuboys trying to figure out if Yuri really didn't change after everything and Yuri stubbornly maintaining that it doesn't matter anyway) (almost (to me) like in his eyes at the end of the day he's still just a piece of Zarc anyway. a puzzle piece doesn't change shape after it's slotted into place, after all.) (but a conversation on Yuri's complete mental lack of personhood is for another time)
EXCEPT!! There are a few times he's slipped up, referenced the Yuboy Fusion/"being one" as a past event; he does it once in his conversation with Yugo but more importantly he does it when he admits to the other three that his worldview Has shifted, he's actually learned to have fun even while losing. (which is a HUGE deal for this character but anyway)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"we used to be one and the same......"
him saying that now, in his lv 2000 raid cutscene, it definitely seems like this is deliberate character progression, so now this damn game got me wondering if maybe, just maybe, this event is gonna end with some depiction of Yuri having to openly accept and embrace that he ISNT just a Zarc shard, he isn't just a Duel Academy superweapon, but an individual person, just as the other yuboys are their own people beyond being cosmically Zarc-linked.
and, well, if that happens, i WILL be hooting and hollering and exploding and maybe crying a little. who knows!!!!

Here's my apparently unpopular opinion: we shouldn't worry about locking up phones until we crack down on the guns and weapons making it into our education buildings.
God forbid something happens, like this past Wednesday in Georgia, students will be unable to contact their parents, authorities, or record anything that could help later on if their phones are locked up. Students will be unable to record when cops do nothing as kids are being killed in their classrooms or the shooter walks to where they're hiding. These student recordings have been helpful in the past to get the exact timeline of events during a lockdown, and taking away these devices completely would ruin so many lives and end so many others.
Parents will have no idea what's happening until they see the news or their kid doesn't come home or administration calls them two hours into the shooting and their child is already dead on the floor and covered up with a white sheet.
Siblings won't have last words to read over on the anniversary of their big sibling's death.
Friends in other districts or states may never know what happened or why their best friend stopped responding one day.
Fix the gun problem. Then talk to us about phones.

Some Nautical Magic Items (D&D 5e)
A random collection of salty artefacts for people to stumble across.
Trinkets
A plain, rusty sword hilt covered in barnacles, that sounds like the sea and whispers of salt and blood when touched.
A battered green glass fishing float, half filled with water, in which odd motes of greenish light bob and float, causing the bauble to emit a watery, green, dim radiance to a distance of 5ft.
A flute carved from whale bone that cannot be played, but sings a mournful whalesong by itself when held.
A 2-inch scrimshawed ivory plaque carved with a large seabird that absorbs any blood spilled upon its surface without staining.
Common Magic Items
SAILOR’S SALVATION (Wonderous Item). This leather waterskin has a chased silver mouthpiece. If filled with seawater, the waterskin converts it to clean, fresh drinking water after 1 minute. This transformation does not work on other liquids.
GRACEGIRDLE’S GUSTY MOTIVATOR (Wonderous Item). The product of gnome wizardry, this marvellous item appears to be a roughly 1ft diameter conch shell, beautifully carved, and mounted on a swivel attached to a pair of metal vices that would allow it to be fastened to the hull of a rowboat. If affixed to the rear of a small rowing vessel, the gusty motivator provides power to the boat equivalent to a sail, allowing the rowboat to move at a speed of 2 miles per hour without all that strenuous rowing nonsense. The boat can also be steered by adjusting the motivator on its swivel.
SAILMAKER’S NEEDLE (Wonderous Item). This heavy sailmaker’s needle, designed for moving through canvas, is enchanted to greatly speed repairs. As an action, the bearer can touch the needle to a piece of damaged cloth or sail and speak a command word, whereupon the needle with fly into the air and beginning repairing the material at a speed of 2ft per minute until it either runs out of material or the command word is spoken again. The needle produces its own thread to do this. It is not advised to use the sailmaker’s needle to repair clothes unless one is satisfied to have them stitched with sail thread.
Uncommon Magic Items
SCINTILLANT NET (Weapon (Net), Requires Attunement). Woven of strange, faintly glowing seaweed, this net does not restrain its target, but rather binds itself to them on a successful hit. The target must make a DC 14 Strength saving throw. On a successful save, the net deals an extra 1d4 poison damage and falls away, returning to your hand. On a failed save, the net binds itself to the target and sinks into their hide for 1 minute. The target may repeat the save at the start of each of their turns, the net falling away and returning to your hand on a success. While bound in this way, the target’s speed is reduced by 10ft, and their form is outlined in bluish-green luminescence, granting advantage to all attacks against them, and rendering them unable to benefit from invisibility.
Rare Magic Items
REACHER (Weapon (Pike), Requires Attunement). This heavy boarding pike has a beautiful bronze finish protecting its iron head, and is carved with images of grasping tentacles along its wooden haft. You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. On a successful hit with this weapon against a large or smaller enemy, the wielder can use a bonus action to attempt to pull the enemy forward off their feet with the hook. The enemy must make a Strength saving throw (DC equal to 8 plus your proficiency plus your strength modifier) and is knocked prone on a failed save. In addition, this weapon has 3 charges which replenish every day at dawn. The wielder can expend a charge as a bonus action to teleport to an unoccupied location that they can see within 40ft of them.
