Things are so scary right now, I was trying to google about it to see if I'd find that calmed me down but what to even google for? "What to do if you're scared of fascism?" "Scared of current historical events" "Is the world ending?" "Is society collapsing?"
How are people suppose to live through historical times? How do you not want to kill yourself everytime you get minimally educated? People shouldn't live in alienation, but how to keep your sanity otherwise?
Everyone is so used to being comfortable, and obviously the world walking the path it's walking today is not the fault of the average person, but how can things change if the people don't change? Why aren't we taught to go after the much needed change?

I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.
#feminism#media criticism#this doesn't apply to media with large casts of female characters where one or the other is uncommonly outspoken or ahead of her time#and it is dealt with realistically in the setting#im not saying women in the past couldnt be wild and headtsrong and revolutionary#i just think treating it as an essential whenever a female love interest gets added to a historical story about some man is wearing

Coining a phrase: Period atypical homophobia.
Definition: When the writer of a piece of historical fiction hasn't really bothered to research how gay people existed in a period of time or what terms would have been used to discuss homosexuality positively or negatively. So instead they put the most modern, likely religious terms into the mouth of a historical character to establish that a character is homophobic.
e.g. Having every Victorian character be a religious homophobe instead of having them talk about "public decency" and "discretion"
#historian consumes media#so many writers are not on the level of Oscar Wilde's boyfriend's father leaving a card calling him a “known sodomite”#as a way to tarnish his public image#this can also apply to how some people write historical racism tbh#I'd say that this comes (at least in the modern period) from people badly misunderstanding the public/private sphere#but political analysts get that wrong all the time too

Wrapping Up Writing
Year-end is a good time for wrapping up writing and more. With holiday celebrations in full swing, there’s too much going on to concentrate on finishing a work-in-progress, or starting a new one. I find writing breaks useful, a time for reflection. My thoughts about story never stop, but while Christmas carols are being sung on the radio, I also reflect on the promise of peace this season…

Progress on my current project ! Having some with stripes and slashing this time around. Didn't take any progress photos for the hosen/pants because it broke my brain a little, lol. I also started doing fingerloop braiding for the lacing cords.
I still have to fix a few things on there, including fixation on the brustfleck, and after that onwards to making the hat !

how much of the strength divide between males n female is truly biological and how much is the result of epigenetic trauma from the worldwide comparative starvation of female children for thousands of years?
#idk much about epigentics could this be possible?#was thinking about how in almost every society historically boys were fed more and better than girls#Sparta being an alleged exception#feminism#mine#feminist#but could it be possible that that kind of sex selective starvation has over time worn down womens muscular capacity???#women in stem pls let me know

quotes by Victorians about the 1920s view of their generation's women
"We are frequently told that the Victorian woman...generally behaved like a pampered and neurotic infant. This is all moonshine. I do not think that I ever saw a woman faint before I came to London in 1869, and not often after then...they enjoyed a hearty laugh, and a good many of them a contest of wits with any man." -Nineteenth Century, a Monthly Review, 1927 (written by a man born in 1850)
"What queer ideas the girl of 1929 has about the Victorian period- they are not a bit true...Marriage was by no means the end and aim of our existence. Oxford and Cambridge claimed quite a few of us after school days were over. We had great ideas about 'life' and what it all might mean to us." -St. Petersburg Times, 1929 (written by a woman born in 1853)
"True, debutantes were chaperoned at balls. But that fact did not prevent them from dancing as frequently as they chose with their favorite partners. The idea that girls in the Victorian era spent their days sewing seams and practicing scales is another fallacy." -Gettysburg Times, July 1, 1927 (quote from the Dowager Lady Raglan, Ethel Jemima Somerset, who lived from 1857 to 1940)
#history#when they were still alive to defend themselves#maybe- much as I rag on modern historical fiction -we've gotten a bit closer to the truth than our grandparents did#see this is one reason I love studying the Victorian era (besides hoarding their detritus like a dragon I mean what)#it just is One Of The Eras Of All Time in pop culture#and it means so much to so many people that getting to the real human bottom of it fascinates me#spoiler: it boils down to 'people were people and always have been'
