Florida Occidental (Wattpad | Ao3 | CH HHM Oneshots)
Florida knew he should be more upset about becoming a British colony—about being taken away from his family and shoved into an environment in which he knew nobody.
Sure, Santiago had become British, but that was long ago, and Florida was sure that his prior identity as Santiago had been all but erased from his mind.
He was happy to escape his Padre’s overbearing, perfectionist nature, the never-ending stream of insults and jeers towards the imperfections that made Florida the failure he was.
He wondered if his Padre and Abuelo would even miss him. Surely, Padre would be happy that his children looked a little more perfect with Florida gone. He just hoped that Gran Bretaña would be kind to him, more accepting of Florida’s imperfections, or at least passing them off as a result of his Spanish heritage.
Although, based on how Gran Bretaña ignored Florida, focusing only on the French Colonies, it seemed that Florida might get off lighter and be looked at less closely as Gran Bretaña monitored the children of his most hated enemy.
Florida was often left alone, not yet ordered to bow at Gran Bretaña’s and forsake his family for the empire he was now a part of.
He realized why a few months after moving in.
He was ordered to Gran Bretaña’s room by the Thirteen Colonies, the colony that was supposed to be teaching him English. Florida had suddenly known it when the British took control, but now Thirteen Colonies mainly helped him by perfecting his grammar and getting rid of his accent, all flaws Gran Bretaña wouldn’t allow.
After seeing what Gran Bretaña did to the colonies that annoyed him, Florida was eager to get rid of it.
The pressure of perfection had returned. Although Thirteen Colonies was much kinder than Florida’s Padre had been. It was…it was nice.
But when Gran Bretaña ordered Florida to his office, Florida was scared about what that meant. Had he not been perfect enough? Had Gran Bretaña learned of Florida’s horrible imperfections from his Padre or Abuelo?
“Hello, señ—sir. You wanted to speak with me?” Florida asked, trying his best to focus on appearing normal and speaking English.
“Yes, I did. I know we have not spoken much since your arrival, and I wanted to apologize for that. The French colonies and their disloyalties have kept me busy ensuring they understand where their loyalties now lie,” Gran Bretaña explained with an apologetic smile.
“I understand,” Florida answered.
“And I thank you for that. I see your lessons with my son have been going well. It is nice to see you adapting so quickly. Now, I figured it was about time we established the relationship that would exist between us.” Gran Bretaña said. Florida was quick to bow his head, a habit long ingrained into him by his father.
“If you want to become my father, I am willing and ready to disown my Spanish family to become a true part of your empire,” Florida recited the lines he had come up with and practiced for ages with Thirteen Colonies to ensure that he said them correctly and, of course, perfectly.
“Thank you for your willingness, but I’m afraid I cannot accept that,” Gran Bretaña said. Florida froze, horror running through him. Did that mean what he thought it meant? Was Gran Bretaña planning on killing him?
“I accept your judgment,” Florida responded, trying to keep the fear from his voice. It didn’t work, as he could tell that Gran Bretaña had picked up on it.
“Do you think I’m going to kill you?” Gran Bretaña asked, sounding confused. Florida shrank in on himself.
“I understand why you would. I’m a—”
“Florida, you aren’t going to die. Trust me. Jamaica is…actually, I’m not sure if he’s your brother, but he was Spanish too, and he and I are close. I don’t want you to die. I believe that you can be a great addition to the empire. However, my government wishes to create a new colony from your preexisting land, and therefore…”
“Oh. We’re going to have a kid,” Florida realized. Gran Bretaña nodded.
“Yes. So I feel it is too awkward for you to call me father. However, if you feel it is beneficial to do a legal recognition, but not an emotional one, I can arrange that,” Gran Bretaña said.
“I would prefer not. I am loyal to you and only you, but I just do not want to…deal with complications from that,” Florida said. Gran Bretaña nodded.
“I understand completely. Now, I will call you back once I have fetched West Florida, who will be born sometime this week. Your new name will be East Florida, but you do not need to start using it until the new colony is born. I just wanted to give you an advance warning so you can start getting used to the name,” Gran Bretaña said, smiling again.
“Thank you,” Florida said, his voice tinged with relief.
“You’re welcome. Thank you for being understandable. You are shaping up to be a good colony.” Gran Bretaña said.
Florida couldn’t help but smile. It was nice to know that he was wanted.

i feel like i slipped into the fucking twilight zone me and my coworkers were chatting in the breakroom about how our area never gets directly hit by hurricanes and i was telling them about how we're in a lucky spot bc the currents deter hurricanes from one direction and the land deters them from the other and i was about to go into how mangrove forests are a natural flood barrier but then the guy from the deli started talking about MAGIC and how "the indians" must have used magic on the land to protect it from hurricanes and then a cashier (who i thought was very cool and sensible before this) AGREED and said that there was definitely some "native american voodoo" going on and it made me feel insane. i just talked about tampa bays natural hurricane deterents (which is a very fascinating subject btw) and you guys are being racist about it???? what the hell is going onnnnn
#tw racism#that was like. cartoonish levels of racism. what the hell??????#they werent even White the deli guys is black and from panama and the cashier is white-passing multi-racial hispanic#the florida general public.......

These Vengeful Wishes review
4/5 stars Recommended if you like: Southern Gothic, horror, wishes, family secrets
Big thanks to Netgalley, Zando Young Readers, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The book started out quite interestingly and you can't quite tell where it's going to go or how our MC ends up back in her mother's hometown. This part of the setup progresses fairly quickly and I was actually pretty amused at how it played out.
I have to say, I didn't like Ceci very much at the beginning. The very beginning was interesting, but she's quickly painted as a spoiled, capricious character. Luckily, things seem to change once her mom and her head to Santa Aguas, and I found myself liking Ceci much more after that. She's definitely a character who has gone through difficulties, despite the seemingly privileged facade (and honestly, reality). She also grows over the course of the book and comes to realize her own flaws while also understanding and forgiving her mother for some of hers.
Santa Aguas clearly has something...off about it from the get-go. For one there's the horse-headed statue of a woman with mustard seeds outside the gas station. For another there's the sheer number of missing person cases and drunk people who wander into the woods and return wrong. There's actually a couple layers to the mystery, and it's hard to tell at first how they all connect with one another. I definitely figured some aspects of it out before the characters did, but there were also parts that took me completely by surprise.
The well of La Cegua and the wishes it grants was definitely an interesting aspect. Wishes being magically granted is, naturally, very seductive and hard to resist. Who wouldn't make a wish or two given the chance? But all magic comes with a price, and the wishes La Cegua grants have a nasty sting...just not always for the wish maker. It was definitely interesting to see how the dark side of these wishes played out and how the desire to make life just a little bit better battled with the need to prevent bad things from happening.
I wasn't sure how the wishes and the missing people connected (except for the obvious: La Cegua), and it was fun trying to figure it out alongside the characters. While the two bits of magic are seemingly separate, there was a really interesting thread connecting them, and I really liked how it was all revealed.
The main side characters are Jamie, the friend who discovers La Cegua's wishing well with Ceci, and two of Jamie's friends, Myra and Di. Jamie is a giant teddy bear who's always looking out for people and trying to make sure they're taken care of. But just like how Ceci is hiding a vulnerable core, Jamie is hiding his own difficult family background behind his sunny exterior. The two of them are able to connect over shared, but different, family troubles, and it makes sense why they're both drawn to the wishing well. Myra and Di seem like polar opposites, but they vibe off each other fairly well. They're also more than willing to bring Ceci into their friend group, and I liked that she had someone other than Jamie that she could be herself around.
I'm not really sure how I feel about Ceci's mom. For most of the book she acts one way: rich, out to keep her money, and wanting to keep up appearances. But throughout the book there are moments of softness with her and she and Ceci get some genuine moments together. She does seem to shed some of the superficiality the longer they stay in Santa Aguas, but then something will happen and she'll snap back to her old self. The ending felt a little too neat with her, imo, though there is a time jump from the last chapter to the epilogue, so I suppose it's feasible she worked on herself.
Overall, I found this to be a great horror read that has wishes gone awry, family secrets, and a nice dose of Southern Gothic. While Ceci doesn't start out as the most likable, I did enjoy her character once she was in Santa Aguas, and she definitely undergoes some major character growth.

I know we’re all still upset about what’s going on but can we just stop for a minute and have some compassion. Cuz?? I have seen a lot of people wishing ill on general populations. Stop fantasising about Texas freezing and Florida drowning! Stop wishing for mass deportations! Jfc think???
#At least when I’ve posted about my frustrations I’ve directed my anger at people who directly supported what’s happening#(inaction and 3rd party is direct imo)#Lets not blame general populations#and YES I’m so fucking pissed about 60% of Hispanics voting for Trump#SO PISSED#I know it’s so fucking stupid and that it’s like mice for mouse traps#I’m beyond angry at my own community#but i recognise innocent people will be harmed if the entire community is attacked#just like in Texas and Florida and Georgia and Arkansas and Louisiana and literally every other red state#direct your anger at the ones responsible#stop lumping everyone in together#it’s like some of you have just been waiting for a reason to be cruel#moose posting#moose rambles

It’s really annoying how people are completely ignoring the fact that Miles Morales is Afro Latino on FB.
Like, the amount of times I’ve seen people suggest an African American actor with zero Latino roots is yikes. Then when you point out that Miles has a Puerto Rican mom, that he speaks Spanish and is therefore Hispanic/Latino… they start bitching.
There’s so many African American actors out there representing you— let Afro Latinos have someone. Let dark skin Latinos have someone.
Being Puerto Rican is a part of Miles’ identity and you will not take that away from him.
#this is in context to a news article asking who would make the perfect miles morales live action actor#and the comments all swarmed with non-Hispanic African American kiddos#there was one kid who was Afro Latino and the rest weren’t#and when people pointed out that Miles is Puerto Rican and speaks Spanish#folk began yowling racism and that he’s mainly black#stop stripping his identity#he isn’t just black he’s also latino#puerto Rico might be a US state but they still get treated like immigrants— look at Florida rn#people are harassing Puerto Ricans despite being American citizens#rant#‘he can’t be Puerto Rican he’s black’ BRO#THERES WHITE LATINOS BLACK LATINOS INDIGENOUS LATINOS#cuantas veces tienen que decirte pinche idiotas#spiderman astv#miles morales

The US Department of State issues travel advisories regarding how safe it is for Americans to travel various countries. In a number of cases, the Level 4 “Do not travel” advisories are used to designate countries whose governments are openly hostile to the Americans such as Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Afghanistan.
So the NAACP, one of the oldest civil rights organizations in the US, issued a formal travel advisory advising African-Americans of the dangers of visiting Florida.
It says in part...
The travel advisory from the NAACP comes several days after The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued its own Florida advisory for Hispanics.
Last month, the group Equality Florida issued a memorandum with the title TRAVEL ADVISORY: FLORIDA MAY NOT BE A SAFE PLACE TO MOVE OR VISIT for people in the LGBTQ+ community. An excerpt...
And of course there’s Florida’s extremist war on reproductive rights.
Florida Passes Extreme 6-Week Abortion Ban
The DeSantis régime with its rubber-stamp legislature have declared war on anybody who is not a straight white male Christian fundamentalist Republican. It may not be a safe place for many Americans to visit or move to.
This is the DeSantis blueprint for the US if he becomes president.
The only way to defeat neo-fascists like DeSantis is to Vote Democratic and to never miss an election. A divided opposition is what let Hitler come to power after getting just 33.1% of the vote in the November 1932 Reichstag elections.
Fascists don’t grow out of fascism, they just keep piling it on. Look no further than Trump and Putin.
Complacency and fleeting crushes on third party candidates are what led to Trump in 2016. We don’t need a rerun – or a re-Ron – in our future.
