Why I love AMCâs Lt Graham Gore: an essay
Full essay under the cut but hereâs the intro to (hopefully) get you interested
In my humble (and completely non-obsessed đ) opinion, AMCâs Lieutenant Graham Gore is one of the best cold boys. He is not only kind and considerate, but well-respected and liked among the other men (especially Goodsir and while that is reason enough, I wrote this anyway bc why not?). In this essay, I will exhibit why Lt Gore deserves all the love and appreciation that is possible to receive from a single fandom.
A list of special mentions are at the end of this post as well if youâre interested đ
This is long so buckle up and hold on to your Welsh wigs, weâre going for a ride.
The first scene where we witness Goreâs personality is the boat hauling scene in episode 2. When the scene begins, itâs clear that Mr Goodsir has been talking for a little while and at first, it seems as though none of the party are really listening to him until he speaks directly to Gore. As soon as Goodsir says his name, the Lieutenant looks up at him and responds immediately despite how much effort and concentration he is clearly putting in to hauling the boat. Goreâs instant and genuine reply of âI do not, Mr Goodsirâ implies that he has been listening (maybe not intently, heâs not superhuman) and knows exactly who Goodsir is talking about. On top of that, the tone of his answer gives the impression that he wasnât giving it for the purpose of not having to converse further with Goodsir, but rather that he honestly couldnât remember the Inuk manâs name, which shows his kindness.
Just a few seconds later in that scene, Gore stops the men as soon as Goodsir offers to take over from one of them in hauling the boat. This second immediate action indicates that he doesnât mind taking the time to swap Hartnell with Goodsir and instruct him on how to pull the weight. (He could just be thankful for the excuse to take a little break and I love that too, so Iâm cool with it being a bit of both). The fact that he has no problem with taking this time just adds to the kindness that we have already seen from him.
This leads me onto his instructions to Goodsir. He explains the technique clearly and calmly, which shows exactly how considerate and attentive he is because he gives Goodsir all the advice he needs to keep in step with the others (âwatch Morfin here in front, and me with the corner of your eyeâ). Goreâs tone is warm and friendly throughout with a touch of reassurance seeping in as he says âyouâll take to it, I know you willâ, which conveys his trust and belief in Goodsirâs ability to haul. While heâs talking, Goreâs whole body is turned towards Goodsir and he gives him a couple of little shoulder pats. (Tartnell and Peglar also give him a shoulder pat each but thatâs different. I mention that again later).
(Just a little side note that has nothing to do with this but thereâs a little detail in one of his lines in this scene that I love. He tells Hartnell to let Goodsir âspell [him]â. We donât use this phrase in the UK and as far as I can tell, itâs North American. I just think itâs a lovely nod to the fact that he comes from a line of Naval officers (one of which might have picked up the phrase). Anyway, back to me rambling about how wonderful this guy is).
And now, my current favourite thing to talk about and watch: the cairn scene. Goreâs second line in this scene (âdoes this place make you uneasy, doctor?â) is said almost like a joke but he doesnât walk away like youâd expect him to if it was meant in that way. Instead, he stays where he is and turns towards Goodsir as if he is waiting for an answer. At first I thought he might have stayed to hand Goodsir his ice pick (or whatever itâs called. I canât find them anywhere) but it looks like he doesnât go to pass it to him until he actually does. And, in case you need any more evidence, if you look closely when it cuts to the wider shot, the end of the handle is visible by the side of his leg and thereâs a 2 second long pause before Goodsir speaks where he could have tried to hand the ice pick over or at least lifted it up, but he didnât.
Goreâs response to Goodsir explaining why he shouldnât call him Doctor is to say âthatâs a doctor in my bookâ which signifies that he respects the work Goodsir has put in to his career so much more than most other characters (minus Dr. McDonald, of course). This response clearly shows he doesnât believe that Goodsir is any less worthy of the title just because he hasnât got the same training as the other shipsâ doctors. Just to add to that, by giving him the title of doctor, it raises Goodsir to a higher level; one, in the eyes of other people, more deserving of respect than his actual station.
Sticking with the cairn scene (last one, I promise), Gore says âthank youâ twice; one to Goodsir and the other to Des Voeux. Both are said in response to very small gestures but actually sound so genuine like they had done something more significant for him than taking his ice pick or handing him the folder-type thing (if anyone knows what this is, please let me know). As far as I can remember, there arenât many thank yous thrown around in the show, especially not any as genuine as these.
Iâve been watching his 7 minutes of screen time so much recently and on about the 10th time, I noticed that heâs quite gentle when he touches other people. He gives friendly little pats on the shoulder or arm to Goodsir three times and to Des Voeux and Morfin once each but none of them are the sharp, quick ones you see from other characters (like Tartnell and Peglar earlier in ep2). I saw someone say on here that a lot of the cold boys subvert the stereotypes of traditional masculinity and I think this is a subtle but really sweet example of that.
And finally, on to how respected and liked he is. We only ever hear Sir John call him Graham, which is interesting because in Victorian England, Christian names werenât something to be used lightly as they symbolised close friendship or intimacy. Crozier saying âamongst everything else, I know you mourn a friendâ to Sir John after Goreâs death reinforces that. All of this is then furthered by how much Sir John clearly grieves Goreâs death along with the implied grieving of the other Erebus officers. Itâs such a credit to his character to see (however brief) the pain and loss his death created among the men.
Sorry to end this on a sad note but here have a cookie đŞ for making it to the end
And now for some special mentions (including some things about the real Lt Gore)
⢠the little pompom on his hat
⢠him helping Morfin up onto the ice ridge
⢠him shouting with the other men when they find the shore
⢠âI pray itâs English tea merchants coming from Kenton that look upon that message nextâ
⢠asking Goodsir if heâs seen something when he sees heâs looking away from the cairn (idk I just think itâs kinda sweet)
⢠his smile (thatâs it)
And for the real Lt Gore:
⢠he was an accomplished artist
⢠Fitzjames described him as having âthe sweetest of tempersâ
⢠a gun exploded in his hand when he was shooting cockatoos in Australia for food. Ended up laid flat and all he could do was quietly say âkilled the birdâ (his hand was fine btw. Only a small injury)
⢠He was promoted to Captain in absentia by the Admiralty (before the official proclamation of the deaths of Franklinâs men)

Danger Force Head canons
(If you recognize these itâs bc I posted them before I accidentally DELETED MY ENTIRE BLOGđ)
Bose calls Henry to talk about his parental problems a lot
Mika does her own hair and occasionally does Milesâ too
Sometimes Miles and Mika have to sleep in the same room to ensure theyâre both still there and okay
Miles has multiple places only he knows about and that he occasionally teleports to just to get some time away
Bose occasionally has trouble setting boundaries leading to the othersâ unintentionally hurting him
In the opposite direction Chapa occasionally preemptively sets too many boundaries causing the others to accidentally exclude her
Miles runs late to things a lot of the time because he constantly thinks, âItâll only take me a second to get there!â even if heâs meant to already be there
Mika drinks tea almost every night to soothe her throat preemptively
Chapa makes most of her own clothes but Miles can sew better than she can
Mika struggles to meet the expectations she has set for herself, often leading to burnout and breakdowns
Miles often struggles with how his interpersonal values conflict with beating up criminals all the time
Due to going to school together and fighting crime together all four kids quickly become codependent
Chapa sometimes has to spend hours or days to herself just to get away from all the stress being a superhero causes
Bose was the first of them to get seriously hurt on a mission, forcing him on bed rest for a week, and off active field duty for at least a month
It was the first time the others really realized that one day this job may kill them
A few villains retired after Kid Danger âdiedâ and more are extra careful with how they treat Danger Force, just in case
As the kids get older they spend a lot of time making up on the schoolwork they missed when they were younger
As the kids get older they get more and more disillusioned with the whole superhero gimmick
They all quit being sidekicks like Henry did although at different times
Miles quits first, deciding heâs ready for a more peaceful approach
Chapa quits next, feeling constrained by Ray and like sheâs ready to be an adult
Bose leaves after her, more peacefully than the other two but not without at least one screaming match
Mika lasts the longest but eventually has to leave to go to college and live her life
Ray often wonders if taking in more sidekicks was truly a good idea
Schwoz loves the kids as though theyâre his own
He often gives them money (that he may or may not have taken from Ray) to allow them to go out like normal teenagers
If Bose overuses his powers he can get migraines occasionally resulting in nose bleeds and on the worst days nausea
The first time it happened he threw up and fainted
It was terrifying for everyone to witness
If Mika overuses her powers she loses her voice for about a week and canât super scream for even longer
The overuse will make her throat swell as well, causing her to have difficulty breathing
Itâs extremely painful and the only thing the others can do is give her medicine and make her soothing drinks
When Miles overuses his powers he gets extreme vertigo.
Heâs also often nauseous making it near impossible to move.
Itâs disconcerting and no one's ever sure how long it will last.
When Chapa overuses her powers her hands and other extremities go numb
She can still summon lightning but she has no control over the output or direction it goes leading it to be dangerous for everyone around her
She usually just has to carry around insulation gloves and wait for her hands to regain feeling

After finally tying the knot, Mr. and Mrs. Manchester said goodbye to Henry and their old friends and welcomed four new ones: Mika, Miles, Bose, and Chapa. Easier said than done when you're outnumbered. Cue the mishaps, mayhem, and mischief in a new adventure for Danger Force.

So, guess who finally sucked it up and watch the final two (three? The two parter was a whole thing) episodes of danger force andâŚyep. Itâs currently 5am so Iâll probably have more thoughts to post on the whole plot and what it means for character progression and endings in my mind once Iâve actually processed and thought about it. This may include what youâd consider hot takes on characters but just know itâs from a place of love and I wouldnât want them to change (unless, of course, Iâm talking about things I wished went differently) because thatâs the best part of the show. Long post ahead and Spoilers for that btw
I will say I procrastinated the hell out of it after hearing a spoiler that Drex has an anticlimactic death, a spoiler which turned out to only be half the truth. I canât remember where I saw it, but I will say thank you to whoever unknowingly spoiled it because yâall shouldâve seen the look on my face when that motherfucker came back from his unimpressive dusty death. Truly, pure joy. The finale itself was weirdly underwhelming and I guess on brand for the show but I thought maybe theyâd put more heart into it; you can really tell the difference of investment put into danger force versus the finale of Henry danger which was, despite Henry and rays final words being a joke, far more touching than the awkward, we know itâs abrupt ending that we got for DF. It feels a little odd as a Henry danger fan since itâs first season to see it end in such a way that leaves me with. Nothing really emotionally.
Iâll start with my thoughts on Rayâs character. Keep in mind itâs been a good few months since Iâve seen any episodes besides these last few (âRay Forgivesâ and âThe Battle for Swellviewâ) so forgive me if Iâm rusty on some things Iâm due for a full rewatch and so point out any contradiction or disagreements you may have because his character is one of my favorites to discuss due to the extremely polarized view fans have on him. I will say this ending truly showcases the final decline of Rayâs character as the show accepts him for what he truly is (see one of his final lines in the last episode as the DF kids try to process his departure âclassic meâ). Ray, I never had high hopes for you and I truly enjoy watching such a despicable person be our main mentor of the show and without you I would definitely be down a few class essays. I wish we couldâve touched on Rayâs inner workings and childhood as well as how his relationship with Henry is involved in any of this? The first part of that sentence Iâm fine without simply because part of Rayâs charm is being a pretty vain character that gathers most of his motivations through that vanity and pursuit of his own goals, but the latter half? I really feel like the show is pretty lackluster for that loose end of Henryâs involvement which I now doubt we will see in the movie. More on that later.
As for Ray, I think Iâve mentioned in the past that his behavior over the course of the later seasons on HD as well as the first two seasons of DF (which is all that was out at the time) could really only lead to three options for his character. Either 1. he has to become so bad that he is actively a villain in the show (I say villain not antagonist because Ray has already been the antagonist of a few episodes), 2. He fully turns over a new leaf and actively works back to the strong figure he was in Season One of HD (too little time for that, get him a therapist), or 3. He spirals into a character so objectively and morally grey that he just leaves. I honestly figured theyâd go for something more of 2 (or at the very least give us some growth and then lead into the third; which, no. The MILES system plot line does not count and Iâll explain why), but it seems the show went right for the third option. His character in the ending was just so shallow and lacking empathy that I was actually shocked. And sure, the show tried to play it off by saying âoh well he saw the kids prove themselves in the big fightâ, when Ray had very clearly already announced his retirement before this happened?
The whole ending with Credenza felt very âLove Muffinâ-esque in the way that you only see one aspect of Rayâs character (which makes sense in Love Muffin because he only had one portion of his character thanks to the muffin) but it was certainly aâŚdecisionâŚfor the final ending of not just danger force but the full run of the Henry danger force series as a whole being considering there was no pause between the finale of HD and the premiere of DF. Thereâs just so much more to his character that couldâve been used there, and it contradicts a lot of things heâs stood for even as late as the second season of DF. Even if you follow his decline of character, there are still other notable qualities that would be far better suited for a goodbye like that. Ray is known for his childishness and his immature attachment style, I donât think I need to show proof or references if youâve seen the show but I will if need be. Ray is also shown with outbursts of anger and things like that which would have been a bit of a dud considering he did that in the HD finale and we donât want a redo because this is something different. I really think the show couldâve done something better than justâŚcalm acceptance? I could even call it delusion but it just wasnât enough for a final goodbye. Rayâs immaturity, his anxious need for his employees to love him, his relationship with Bose? I canât really think of a worse way to end things aside from Ray leaving offscreen like they couldnât pay Cooper his final check.
It seems Ray simply doesnât want to be a mentor anymore. Like other things, he grew bored of it? He found something better? One can only guess. But it feels almost as though the show is painting a picture that Ray was just doing the whole mentoring sidekicks thing while he looked for a hot date. Which, if so, was his whole goal from the beginning? Because Ray spent all 8 seasons of show trying his luck with various women and he was quick to jump in their arms at any moment to leave his superhero life behind. But then again, he was quick to take any opportunity to leave his job. Itâs not a good characterization of him to say that he was just âlooking for loveâ the whole time and once he found it, he was done with the superhero schtick. It disregards his whole obsession with the city of Swellview loving him. It disregards his childish idealization of super heroism (buying capes, creating other super identities) , something that persisted even after heâd worked the job for decades. You could say he âgrew upâ? But then why the âclassic meâ line at the end and why have we seen no other growth in any areas? I have my own view and characterization of Ray that was not changed by the finale, so I am ignoring a large portion of it, something youâll see as a trend with the other characters. But, this is just food for thought.
And obviously, since heâs truly the highlight of the show in my eyes and the light of my life who brightens my face and day every time he comes on screen, I was very happy to see Drex make his presence in the finale. Of course I knew about him being Buddy Fudgers real dad (see the timeline I made for it because the initial reveal in the trailers and clips had me absolutely reeling trying to keep my own interpretations of the show at least somewhat in line with whatever canon threw at me). The simple fact of him *being* buddy fudgers biological father is the only good and useful thing to come of it in my opinion. The actual detailsâŚCredenza being Drexâs ex-wife?? Drex apparently being an active part of Buddyâs life for an undisclosed amount of time before leaving and then apparently finding the time to come back into Buddyâs life and having SHARED CUSTODY for an also UNDISCLOSED amount of time?? The retcons in this specific plot line and Drexâs plot as a whole make my head hurt. Iâm not even going to touch on the marriage thing until Iâm good and ready, but, letâs just say I have ideas for that. As for everything else? Scrap it, honestly. The show itself pokes fun at the paradox of Drexâs character (always losing forâŚsome reasonâŚas he puts it) and I am happy to keep my own Drex and Ray and hell even Buddy Fudgers dolls away from the canon of it all and leave it there.
I liked that the show didnât try to put on an elaborate backstory as to why Drex and Ray really hate each other (because, hey, whaddya know, we already got that in Drexâs DEBUT episode in 2016, but itâs not like the writers are aware of thatâŚ) and they just left it at âI donât know why weâre madâ as well as leaving any backstories of their friendship in one little photograph. Donât bother with the details, we know itâll make our brains hurt anyway. Even though itâs a bit of a copout, I wouldnât have wanted to see one of the only stable and serious relationships in the show be reduced to a joke like âoh Drex are my last poptart 15 odd years ago and weâve been enemies ever sinceâ. A good part of Drex and Rayâs rivalry that still held up even onto season 3 of DF was because so much of it was left in the dark, we can only speculate. They always have just enough motive and reasoning for you to be like âsure, that makes senseâ (In Hour of Power when Ray explains that Drexâs violent tendencies led to them just âhaving it outâ provides a father-son Batman type feud between them as Drexâs rage is obviously not dealt with in a proper way, as well as in the finale of Henry Danger on the blimp where Drexâs thought-to-be final words to Henry are âI was always the better sidekickâ implying a clear jealousy at Rayâs favor towards Henry). It kept things neat and clean and dark enough for Drex to be a good bad guy. And he makes a pretty good show of being a good guy in his fifteen seconds of fame (which btw had me beaming and shaking my screen at his happy saunter ahh I just love him so much I canât)
And, of course, I must discuss, my Roman Empire, my magnum opus, Ray and Drexâs relationship. Or rather their father and son. relationship. Let me preface by saying of course you may interpret Ray and Drexâs relationship however you want (father-son, brothers, I think some people ship them as lovers as well) and by extension Henry and Rayâs. However, if youâve caught even one glimpse of this account youâd likely see that I consider them to be scorned father and son. Same goes for Henry, I know some people think of him and Ray like brothers and thatâs fine, but in my mind they will always have a pseudo father son relationship. Now, Iâve talked about all three of them and their relationships with each other a lot on my account, so I wonât waste space reiterating it. I do want to talk about the showâs portrayal of Drex and Rayâs latest moments together. Now, right from the getgo Drex is very much coded as a scorned son (or ex lover if you listen to Hour of Powerâs euphemisms which is so gross not for Drex but for the implications the show put on Henry). He calls Ray âold manâ and âpopsâ and even says something similar to dad if youâre desperate like me âfinally got the outfit to match your dad bodâ(excuse my paraphrasing on that last one itâs 6am and I donât want to go look for the exact quote). But by the latest episode Ray calls him brother? I preferred the ambiguity; itâs not the biggest issue in the world but it feels like another part of Drex that they were trying to retcon. I have much bigger plans for him though, always.
There seemed to be a lot of copout âfor some reasonâs in the last few plots of the season but honestly, I donât want to compare the two finales because theyâre separate things and also one continuation of each other, and also I donât care for the discourse between which is better. I simply look at this finale for a three season show that took the time to invest us in its characters and I just feel disappointed. I didnât have high hopes for the ending given what they were working with.
Some other thoughts that didnât make it into my totally âneatâ paragraphs:
Ray getting decapitated was the total best move for showing just how unhinged and detached Henry danger force is from the rest of Nickelodeon in terms of censoring and morals, and I absolutely loved it.
Buddy turning into Drex, only to turn back into himself but bigger a few minutes later wasâŚa choice. Although I did find it funny that the show pointed out his return back to Buddy-likeness.
Iâm not sure where any of this fits into the movie but considering it didnât begin work until after season three was done, it might have some impact. I would love to see Henryâs reaction to all of this.
Iâm not sure why they felt the need to hammer home Boseâs dad being gone? It felt like a bad punchline the third or fourth time around and I was very confused and annoyed when they mentioned it 3+ times per episode despite it not being a prominent thing in any prior seasons. Felt like maybe it was supposed to be lead up for a conclusion that didnât happen, so it was. Odd.
I felt like Chapa really got her spotlight in those final episodes which is cool but we also didnât really see anything come of it, especially when Mika was the unofficial leader of the group, it seemed like Chapa was stepping up to take that place with her initiative. Iâve always felt like Chapa would be the one hero to stay in Swellview after CM if they took the route of only one hero taking over. But then again, nothing came of it.
Mikeâs visions also got pushed to the back which, they kind of always have been, although it was always an opening to introduce new powers for the others, nothing came of that either.
As for Mika, no notes really. Great job. Although it seemed like there was supposed to be a romance between her and Bose that just never came to fruition either for time or other changes, which left us with something very similar to the Henry and Charlotte run. Bose and Mika seemed to have more intentional moments so I had a little more hope for them considering they werenât just a few circumstantial jokes and a rushed one-off episode like Charlotte and Henry. Wouldâve like to see something happen there simply because of the clear intent for something to happen there, but, unfortunately it didnât happen.
Credenza I havenât got much to say about, except the whole cult thing being ingrained into her by her ancestors seems like a cool aspect to her character that might lend to some neat little details in other stories. Buddy was cool, I think his character was fine as well although I never understand why they love to do this trope where these superheroes with SUPER SECRET IDENTITIES apparently âcanât ever keep any secrets at allâ but itâs a gag at the end of the day and Mika suffers from the same trope at times.
Thatâs all my thoughts for now, I know itâs a lot, and Iâll probably have more once Iâve had time to fully flesh things out in my mind. I would love to use this for a chance to write new stuff, but unfortunately my laptop melted, so thatâs that. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on any of this! Thanks for reading if you got this far I know itâs jumbled
