A new generation of Royal Knights

In an interview, Kenji Watanabe commented that he's not opposed to expanding the Royal Knights beyond 13 members and had an idea that the original Knights could pass the baton to a new generation, with Jesmon serving as the bridge between the old and new Knights. This story has never been done in any official media (and honestly, it probably never will), but I like what ifs. If this story ever were told, they could make new Digimon, but I'm going to pick some existing Digimon to fill in the ranks. That means I need to find 12 Digimon that would fit as Royal Knights, since Jesmon will stay as number 13. I'm also not going to pick Digimon that belong to other groups, since they have their own duties to attend to.

The elephant in the room here is the Tian Ji. Currently, they only exist as a group in Digimon New Century, where they act as sort of a second Royal Knights team that also answers to Yggdrasil. The Royal Knights and Tian Ji do not get along at all, but it is possible that Jesmon may look to them as a way to rebuild the Royal Knights should they disband or be destroyed. I went back and fourth on wheter or not to include members in my new Royal Knights, but ultimately I decided not to. The Tian Ji probably wouldn't be interested in joining and may serve better in their original role than they would by merging the teams.

An easy choice for the new Royal Knights is BloomLordmon. Its reference book entry outright says it has power to rival the Knights and it is a protector of nature. I imagine that since Jesmon is the one assembling this new team, he may pick Digimon with similar attitudes to him. Jesmon is the Royal Knight with the closest connection to the common Digimon, while the rest of them tend to be much more aloof. BloomLordmon matches Jesmon's ideals pretty well. One of the roles of the Royal Knights is to protect the Digital World, and BloomLordmon already does that in part by protecting nature. It also absolutely has the knightly aesthetic down.

One Digimon that doesn't really have the knight aesthetic but does fit the role is Amphimon. Amphimon is permitted to judge and punish evil in the Net Ocean and its pressure suit means there's nowhere in the ocean that evildoers can go to hide from it. An explicitly aquatic member is something I think is missing from the original Royal Knights lineup. Another point that isn't really about qualifications or anything is that Amphimon (at least in the anime) presents feminine while the original Royal Knights are a total sausage fest, so adding some girls to the team would be nice.

Amphimon acts as a guardian of the seas, so a counterpart guardian of the skies would also be good. I think a natural choice is Metallicdramon. It lives at altitudes so high few others can reach them, and can fly at the speed of light, allowing it to quickly reach threats the other Knights wouldn't be able to get to. It also spreads particles that preserve the harmony of the Digital World, so it is already doing part of the Royal Knight job. Metallicdramon also only descends from the sky when something major is happening, allowing it to act as an early warning system.

Another Digimon that doesn't necessarily fit Jesmon's ideals but that would be a good pick is Ravemon. The original Knights never had a member skilled in covert operations, something Ravemon is an expert in. Stealth and assassination may not fit the image of an order of honorable knights, but sometimes you really do need somebody to do the dirty work and take out growing threats before they can really become a problem. The original Knights also have their share of less honorable members, particularly LordKnightmon/Crusadermon. Ravemon was abandoned by its god out of anger, so the chance to serve Yggdrasil, another god, may appeal to it. It also has Burst Mode to fall back on if it really needs that extra power boost.

Jesmon really likes the ideals of the knight errant, someone who roams the world and brings justice to the unfortunate. Therefore, I think Justimon would be a kindred spirit and a natural choice of Royal Knight. Justimon is all about dropping in, defeating evil, then leaving to find more foes. It also inspires others to rise up and fight for justice, a valuable skill for a Royal Knight. Justimon also has the three different arms it can equip to make it a very versatile fighter.

Responding to threats is good, but proactively preventing them is better. That's why I think Quantumon would be a good pick. Quantumon's whole thing is analyzing data to predict disasters and safeguard against them. One of the duties of the Royal Knights is to protect network security, and who better at that than someone who can predict problems before they happen. Quantumon would be an unconventional Knight as I don't really see it on the front lines taking the fight to the enemy, but it would be an excellent coordinator, directing the more active Knights to where they are needed most.

Speaking of safeguarding network security, Crossmon/Eaglemon's job is to destroy invaders who attempt to access the Digital World. Becoming a Royal Knight is not that much of a change in job description. I don't have much else to say about this one because there's not that much info about it out there. It does look like its wearing armor though.

Another Knight with a specialty could be Tactimon. While a powerful ruler, Tactimon's greatest strength is its mind. It is a master tactician who can guarantee victory with its incredible skills and ruthlessness. I imagine it would fill a similar role to Duftmon and LordKnightmon on the original team, being the leader of an army who also acts as the group's foremost strategist. I imagine Tactimon being much colder and more ruthless than Jesmon's other recruits, but highly effective in what it does. Tactimon's sword can even act as a last resort for the New Royal Knights, as drawing it unleashes the power of a collapsing star. Tactimon technically is a member of a group, but only in the Xros Wars continuity, so I'm ok with it.

That's a lot of Knights who specialize in a particular duty or particular area, so lets get some more generalists. A good one that has a similar attitude to Jesmon and Justimon is Siriusmon. It is a wanderer who descends from the skies to bring justice. Siriusmon also has a kind heart and will work to redeem evildoers it feels have a chance. It could easily become one of the most beloved of the new Royal Knights, acting more as a redeemer while still striking down threats when needed.

Rasenmon also acts like Siriusmon in that it's ultimately a kind Digimon, but it also comes with the benefit of knowing what it is like to be evil is Rasenmon. Rasenmon has the potential to become Rasenmon Fury Mode if its negative emotions overtake it. I think Rasenmon therefore could be a good addition to the New Royal Knights because it could recognize if one of its teammates was going down the wrong path and help them, or defeat them if necessary. Rasenmon would also be good at telling when it or one of the other Knights is going too far and holding them back if needed.

One of the duties of the Royal Knights is to protet the common Digimon from danger. Usually that's by killing evil Digimon, but it doesn't have to be the only method. HeavyLeomon is an expert in rescue and will prioritize saving Digimon in danger over fighting. When it does fight, it is a monster combatant with many built-in weapons. I think HeavyLeomon would help remind the other New Royal Knights that their duty is not only to fight danger, but to protect the regular Digimon as well.

My final member of the New Royal Knights will be Kazuchimon. Sometimes, there's a threat so dangerous that everything else goes out the window and it just needs to die. This is where Kazuchimon would come in. It is an obsessive combatant that lives for a fight and can take on almost anything. When the New Royal Knights face a threat that the others can't take out due to their divided duties, other priorities, or not being strong enough, the response will be to point Kazuchimon at the problem and get the hell out of the way.

With that, the final roster is Jesmon, BloomLordmon, Amphimon, Ravemon, Justimon, Quantumon, Crossmon, Tactimon, Siriusmon, Rasenmon, HeavyLeomon, and Kazuchimon. I can definitely see other options, so let me know who you'd include in your own Royal Knights team. I think the ones I would be most likely to swap out are Metallicdramon and Crossmon. If I did, I might change them for MirageGaogamon and gold Rapidmon or Sakuyamon. Maybe even LovelyAngemon.

I have some honorable mentions that I considered for the group, but ultimately didn't include. I considered Slayerdramon, but as it's half of Examon, it's kind of represented on the original team. Diarbbitmon also didn't make the cut because its role as a nature guardian overlaps with BloomLordmon. I considered Hououmon/Phoenixmon instead of Metallicdramon, but Hououmon is already a powerful holy Digimon who rules over all birds. Since those duties don't overlap with those of the Royal Knights, I figured it might be too busy to join. Valkyrimon similarly has unrelated duties. MedievalDukemon/Gallantmon, Hexeblaumon, and Zephagamon are heavily associated with Witchelny and probably stay there instead of the Digital World. I considered having both Durandamon and BryweLudramon, but ultimately decided that if the only reason I want them is to have access to RagnaLordmon, that's not a good enough reason.

If Team 7 were DigiDestineds (Part 10)

(Legally adopted in his mid-teens by Hatake Kakashi) Hatake Sai's Crests would be Hope (Virtue) and Envy (Sin). His digivice is a black D-Ark/D-Power (which lacks the card slot and) which has a medium grey rim (around the screen) & matching buttons & a likewise strap with the clip for attaching the digivice to things being black. The digivice's dark grey square screen has 1 of Sai's Crests appear on it in black whenever he connects with his Digimon partner emotionally in ways that link to either of the 2 Crests. He has a

Botamon (who he nicknames Ink) as his Digimon Partner. Initially seeing them (Ink is agender) solely as a tool due to his horrific childhood, Sai eventually learns to have a true (a.k.a. healthy) partnership/platonic friendship with Ink. This nearly comes at the cost of his Digimon partner's goofy personality, though; since Sai's unintentional abuse (he doesn't know what happened to him was wrong and child abuse, so it doesn't occur to Sai to treat Ink as a real friend 'til he starts overcoming his own trauma) breaks Ink little by little 'til there's nearly nothing left of their original cheerful personality.

When the duo manages to bond for the 2nd ever time despite all the toxicity, Ink digivolves into

Wanyamon then the next harmonious moment between human partner & Digimon partner results in Ink digivolving into either

Liollmon or

Drawmon or

Ekakimon.

Ink digivolves from both their Drawmon form & their Ekakimon form into

Effecmon then

Fumamon.

Throughout all that time, Ink bit by bit regains their original bubbly personality. Sai and the others multiple times reassure them that they doesn't have to forgive him nor stay friends with him coz Sai being an emotional and physical abuse victim at Shimura Danzō's hands is no excuse for how he treated Ink, but they sticks beside Sai anyway (even after at 1 point ending their friendship for a year, Ink returns to Sai; they never forgives him for the verbal abuse, though.)

Whenever the duo's bond reaches its peak, Sai & Ink matrix digivolve with the latter being at the Rookie Level when doing so. If they's Drawmon or Ekakimon, the end result is

HeavyLeomon. If Ink is in their Liollmon form instead, the end result of them matrix digivolving with Sai is

BanchoLeomon.

Near the end of Team 7's adventures, BanchoLeomon sacrifices himself. Fortunately, a hastily formed shield around them lessens the damage from impact then he's magically healed (the medics using all their – the medics' – power to do so yet it still is) just barely enough for them to survive; Sai spends many months hospitalised immediately after him & his Digimon partner de-matrix-digivolving whilst Ink reverts into a DigiEgg with no memories of everything that had happened when they hatches. Both receive a lot of support from the others.

Digi-partner: Abayomis

So Digimon are weird there are official lines, but in lore usually in theory any digimon has the potential to become anyone. Which means it can be really fun, similar to building a Pokemon team that represents you. You can try to stick to an important theme or can use each stage to represent another different aspect of you. I'm gonna create a line that I think is fun, has some thematic connections and color cohesion. And Since each digimon doesn't necessarily stick to one through-line, i'm gonna pick one child/rookie and then give two distinct lines that go in a different direction. ROOKIE! Junkmon

Junkmon I feel like has a lot of potential as a partner digimon. He evokes plushie qualities which means there is an immediate connection to a child partner. But it has a frankly scrappy and mischievous quality, then again the helmet also gives me a protective quality and makes me think of a dependable blue collar worker Has a lot of potential. He also makes me think of the friends we would make exploring the Junk in our Aunts basement as we did laundry. It's also a fun mixture of animal and inanimate objects. That nature, and its plushie nature also is a reason why I think it would be a good representation of us. ( also can you imagine a cute little Butch Junkmon anthro.) FIRST DIGIVOLUTION LINE: CHAMPION/ADULT: Komondomon

Komondomon builds on a lot of fun aspects its very animalistic kind of like agiant dog creature, but built into it is more inanimate objects, it's a whole vehicle now. Very friendly, very useful and reliable.

ULTIMATE/PERFECT Locomon

Locomon will be a brief yet important shift to reach the final cohesion of the line. AT this point our body has shifted hard into inanimate, but the sides of Locomon are evocative of the claws of Junkmon, and it keeps the transportation vehicle nature of Komondomon MEGA/ULTIMATE: Heavyleomon

Heavyleomon brings alot of the strong colors of Junkmon back, at this point they are mostly object with only a small animal theme for an aesthetic, it has wheels and other aspects that call back to the previous two stages. Very buly, very strong complete robot. It is delightful. BUT We have another direction, a softer aspect to explore. DIGIVLUTION LINE 2 CHAMPION/ADULT Nohemon

Nohemon focusing on keeping the Plushie part but moves away from the more animaly specific vibe of its counterpart Komondomon. Or astleast at face value. The crow is the actual true form, noe beaver to crow is a big deal but I think the stuffed creature/fabric aspect keeps the vibes going. The fun hat is also a nice little callback ULTIMATE/PERFECT Monzaemon (with honorary mention of Monzaemon x)

Monzaemon is a creature that exists in a plushie suit, and thats a perfect representation of me. Monzaemon x Antibody, makes the creature some sort of perfect love goo creature, and it is the literal embodiment of me. Maybe a form or slide evolution based onit could be a aprt of the line. If I was a digimon that stayed in one form it would be Monzaemon x antibody. A slime and a plushie. MEGA/PERFECT

Pinochimon

Pinochiomon is a toy themed mega. It would be the perfect choice for me. It is also a neat because it brings a bunch of callbacks, it also have a hat like Junkmon and Nohemon. It mainly being made of wood is a call-back to the straw of Nohemon and the beaver elements of Junkmon being associated with wood. It is also a toy that brings up the conection to Monzaemon and some of Junkmon. I couldn't find anything for the clay vibes for me that felt like it fit into the lines. But i'm pretty happy

Random ideas for the Transformer Crossovers with Pokémon and Digimon

Sleuth Half Data form ends up doing a Mega Man and copying appearances of Transformers

Frontier accidently revives a Predacon Fossil and ends up having too wrangle the newly revived Predacon

Mix and Scraper take too calling HeavyLeomon "Big Boss" and calling the Mega Level Digimon an Honorary ConstructiBot

All Transformer iteration with Sleuth and Frontier will have them finding and taking care of the Dinobots

Soundwave finding 2 other Pokémon besides Rumble and taking care of them in the Pokémon Crossover

Sleuth and Frontier treating the Autobots too some well deserved Rest and Relaxation in the Bayverse Iteration

Invismon and Soundwave showing of Stealth Wing and Lazerbeak too each other

I just have the image of Invisimon and Soundwave holding their respective companion like a cat. Two things came to mind with Sounders getting more Pokemon. Ravage being a Hisuian Zorua that prefers disguising themselves as a cat and Frenzy is an Iron Bundle who's quick to freeze any uninvited snoopers in Soundwave's space while he's gone.

Sleuth would be such a menace if they ever got ahold of Cybertronian cosmetic data. I totally see HeavyLeomon being confused for a Constructicon than just a Beastformer since their design features lion style heavy construction tools from jackhammers to shovels.

Trying my hand at making full lines for other armor evolutions

Lighdramon is classified as a beast, so I'm not actually sure it's even supposed to look so reptilian. That might just be V-mon shining through a little too well. At any rate, Qinglongmon has a very similar mask and even has the lightning horn, so it's a pretty natural connection. Tyilinmon is a lightning-powered dragon/mammal with a horn, so while it's not the ideal visual match, it's a lot more acceptable than what I just did to Hawkmon.

Armadimon/Sepikmon get Makuramon and KingEtemon because monkey. There aren't exactly that many options for a racial caricature, after all. I guess Gokuwmon would also work in Makuramon's place. But KingEtemon's colors actually play off Armadimon so I do kind of like that.

Patamon/Stegomon get Triceramon and Spinomon. Very simple reasoning in that it's a dinosaur covered in blades. As a happy accident, Spinomon is orange like Patamon too. Digimon Savers even connected Stegomon and Spinomon by making Ivan turn into variants of both of them.

Tailmon/Bitmon is simple. Pink rabbit with blades? Crescemon and Dianamon. Andiramon and Cherubimon Virtue also work.

Wormmon/Togemogumon is a little more complicated. Blastmon plays off it visually even though it's made of diamond and not ice. Then Panjyamon X-Antibody creates an interesting bridge in that it's an ice-themed mammal that's blue and white, and it's also bipedal and wearing a cape. You could also draw something between Panjyamon X's mane and Blastmon's crystals.

Hawkmon needs to end in FrosVelgrmon no matter what, even though Rinkmon is a "blade" one and not "ice" one. I think I've mentioned before how the friendship armors are really all over the place, right? Anyway, I'm not in love with it, but a humanoid with blades on its feet calls Matadrmon to mind and I don't have a better idea. If you squint, Matadrmon kind of plays off Hawkmon's color scheme and wings.

Looking back at the KarnEX video on this subject, he had the same idea for both Sepikmon and Stegomon. He chose RaijiLudomon to bridge Lighdramon and Qinglongmon, and CrysPaledramon to bridge Rinkmon and FrosVelgrmon. His idea for Togemogumon was Frozomon and AncientMegatheriummon which I can see, and he played with Blizzarmon as the perfect level which I did too at first. In fact, while I like what I ended up with, I am a little shocked AncientMegatheriummon didn't even cross my mind. His idea for Bitmon was Kyukimon and Cherubimon, which is fair but I do like the Dianamon line more.

As for the misfits of Thunderbirmon and Kenkimon:

Karn's idea of Loudmon and Heavymetaldramon works great if Impmon is Thunderbirmon's child stage. It has the same mask as Lighdramon and Qinglongmon, but I'm not 100% on what could bridge it with Qinglongmon. And it's boring to have dupes.

LoaderLiomon and HeavyLeomon carry Kenkimon's construction machinery theme. Karn suggested Valvemon and Breakdramon which is very respectable too, especially if you're not a fan of it turning into a Voltron.

I forgot that in my fic Digimon Fragments, the first villains take over a village of machine Digimon. They kill its leader- HeavyLeomon- and use a loophole to preserve the head on his chest for throne usage. So Digimon Fragments has a Leomon kill count of one.
