Pokémon Pocket Monsters BW Volume 1 - Chapter 2

Clefairy and the others dine at a restaurant. Unknown to them that it is actually an official Pokémon gym.

The second chapter and we get to our first gym battle! It's too bad it doesn't last for that long... I'm guessing that Clefairy's tea was enough to satisfy their tastebuds and earn Red the Trio Badge.

Regarding the Gym Leaders, Cilan, Chili, and Cress, there's not much I can say about them. What I can say is that they have a strong bond with each other. They're also incredibly modest and never claim that one brother is cooler than the other. I found that to be a very nice take on these characters.

One interesting thing to note is that halfway through the story, Clefairy urges the brothers to quit their jobs as Gym Leaders and devote more time to the restaurant. This does manage to work for a while before the three go back to being Gym Leaders. While it might have been a coincidence, the Striaton City Pokémon gym is converted into a full-fledged restaurant in Pokémon Black Version 2 and White Version 2.

You can also battle the brothers every day for additional money and experience. (You also get TM83 for beating them for the first time.) By using this short scene, Anakubo single-handedly foreshadowed the fate of the Striaton City gym in the next Pokémon games. I know it's a coincidence. But it's still amazing that someone was able to predict something from future Pokémon titles that were still being conceived at the time.

I say for the Transformer Trainer accidently helped revive is the Autobot Hound. An Autobot Scout who got stranded on Earth in the 1910's while chasing after some Decepticons. Also this will be Hound's design

This design is from the Hearts Of Steel concept art of Steampunk versions of the Autobot's. He choose a cargo train as an alt because well there were a ton of them at the time so it was perfect place too blend in when his Energon reserves reached critical. Of course after Trainer help's them get back on their feet they will change their alt too their iconic Jeep design too better blend in. Though Hound keeps the Cargo Train schematics because it might come in handy and it's sentimental for him

Ooo. I can only imagine all the Autobots immediate confusion when they detect Hound's signal. He had vanished sometime during the war and everyone thought he went offline.

I can see the team helping him pick out a new alt mode alongside asking what had happened. Cue the instant surprise when they learn Trainer was the one to help Hound. This kid is clearly going places.

I mean that's three bots they rescued so far. Watch Optimus think about the Rescue Bots. Also Hound's Cargo Train alt mode could be useful for the D.I.N.G.U.S episode.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters BW Volume 1 - Chapter 1

After crashing in the Unova region, Red and his Pokémon go to Professor Juniper's laboratory to get a new partner Pokémon.

Right off the bat, this chapter does a lot of good things that other chapters like it don't. For one, there's an explanation given as to how the characters got to this new region and the writer doesn't insist that you read the last chapter of the previous saga to figure out why certain things are happening. It even starts with a short recap of the final chapter of Pokémon Pocket Monsters HG SS and emphasizes that Tyrogue left the group. As a long-time reader who constantly got confused as to how Red and his Pokémon got to each region and already know about the Pokémon there, this actually felt pretty nice.

That line from Professor Juniper's character bio wasn't lying when she says she doesn't take kindly to being called an old woman. And she always seems to calm down whenever the characters refer to her as "big sister". When she comes back later in the manga, this will probably be used as a running gag. For the kind of manga Pokémon Pocket Monsters is, I can already see that happening.

The other new characters are the Unova starter Pokémon and Black, Cheren, and Bianca. None of these guys have anything noteworthy going on for them. Tepig, Snivy, and Oshawott show up in only a few panels and only speak a small number of times. As for the new Trainers, there's not much to add about them either. They all seem to be new to Pokémon and can't seem to agree on most things.

This character is supposedly called Black.

I say that because that's supposedly the name Bulbapedia gives him. The names of the new characters aren't really stated in this chapter. I imagine that Black and the others will show up again in the future. But as they are now, they're paper cutouts that Anakubo will refine as the story continues.

All in all, there wasn't anything I found bad about this chapter. The story serves as a good beginning for the BW saga, the humor makes me laugh, and the antics Clefairy and the others get into serves as the opposite of filler in that it gets the cast somewhere. A perfect start to a great saga!
