Greg James (Radio 1 DJ/Fast & The Curious host) was on the Sky Sports podcast a few months back and he made a really lovely and important comment about Fandom in F1 that I think more people need to hear...

"They are popstars, that is the closest comparison. They are popstars but I don't look at that as a negative. People like these people for a reason and you're a snob or you're shortsighted if you think it's fluff, because the people that love... I'll just do a comparison. People that love Harry Styles, if you're 14, 15, 16 and you're a girl...for example my niece, 15 years old, incredibly smart, worldly, has got big dreams, big ambitions, she is obsessed with Harry Styles, and it's dangerous and shortsighted to dismiss people that are obsessed with things... that are passionate about things, because those people will grow up and those things are really important to a human. Those first touch points of 'That's my favourite Formula One driver', or 'That's my favourite popstar', you never forget that sort of thing, they shape who you are, they help you shape what you like, and I know that sounds a bit grand but how amazing to have Lando Norris as your favourite celebrity, what a great person because that's an incredibly talented person. That's a person who's worked hard and is so great at their job.

So there's a lot of 'Oh, you only like Formula One because you fancy the drivers.' Great! Whatever your way in is, that's fantastic. My niece, told me the other day 'I want to marry a Formula one driver' and she's joking with me, but how fantastic, this thing that, to a 15 year old is mad to dive into the data of a Formula One car, but just kind of likes it... I don't know how you could not find that charming and sort of sweet. You can like any bit of sport that you like. Noone is supposed to be gatekeeping this thing.

I'd also like to say, not to generalise, there will be many 14, 15 year olds who want to get into the sport and they love the granular detail of the sport and they will become the next generation of engineers. Whatever your doorway into the sport is... Amazing. You've sort of won. If you're Lando Norris you've got people who know who you are and you're brilliant at your job and that's how sport can make a difference in people's lives because these characters have to transcend the sport"

in s1e17, physical education, abed says that he didnt mind changing for other people because hes comfortable with who he is . a season later, in s2e19, critical film studies, he says instead that he doesnt like change . and now i realize what he really meant when he said that he didnt mind changing .

when i was younger, around 11-12, i would pretend to be other people online . more than five different separate identities in one discord server . because i wanted people to like me more . i made these alt accounts and assigned each one a personality, a different typing style, a reason for joining, a region, and a timezone . and for the most part, they were people who were nicer and just generally likeable . because im not someone who is any of those things . i am not a nice person . i dont even think im a good person . and god i am not likeable . at all .

so i played these characters . most of them only being active for short periods . i would have full back and forth conversations with these alt accounts to sell it . i had these weird insane elaborate plans . a 16 year old former drug user, lives in manitoba, somewhat parental . 13, california, liked minecraft and drawing -- completely different artstyle (and different software) too . etc .

i would let these accounts bake (make them and then not use them) so that it didnt seem suspicious with a brand new account joining the server . then i would spend a week making the account and forming a character to go with it, sometimes asking people to help me out . it was so fucking crazy . i was insane . might still be .

i was such a better person on those different accounts . because i didnt know how to change on the inside, i just started over and over again . different account, new me . like i was experimenting with who i really wanted to be like . formulating the perfect person to act like when i finally decided that i wanted to become a better person .

i gave up eventually obviously . im not a tween anymore . i was a really weird tween . obviously . but i think about it a lot .

honestly i only went back to being myself because it was comfortable . i felt better being a fucking douche . and i still am a douche . im not a good person . i dont think ill ever be a "good person" . what the hell is a good person, anyways . all i know is that im fine with myself like this . even as much as i not-so-secretly hate myself, and deny it out of fear of seeming like an "edgy attention seeking loser" .

its not that abed doesnt mind change, he just doesnt mind changing the persona . he doesnt mind changing the person showing on the outside . a separate identity . but ultimately, he wouldnt ever fundamentally change as a person . because hes fine with who he is, even if other people might not like him for that . and i want to be like him . i want to be someone who is fine with who they are, even if that someone is a socially inept ass who learned tenth grade math at age ten but cant figure out when their own face is making a smile or not .

seeing the jorge celebrations you posted is so interesting, but besides the gladiator, i didn't even know any of them. dorna and the motorcycle media have been talking valentino's celebrations for years, with stuff like "top 10 valentino rossi celebrations," but they're so indifferent to everyone else's. it's so unfair. thanks for showing me

anyway, yeah, of course there is a bit of a disparity, which is in part because dorna knows what will get clicks but is also a bit of a self-perpetuating cycle. I mean, you may have noticed but much of that post was like... me scrounging together screenshots from the actual race footage rather than finding actual nice photos. if you don't show people this stuff, of course they're not gonna decide for themselves whether they're into it or not. it's a shame, because it's kinda also interesting specifically in relation to valentino? like, everyone who was doing celebrations after he '''started'''' it was kinda inevitably in conversation with his approach, and it's an interesting element of his impact on the sport

with jorge specifically, I do think part of it is that it did kinda tail off. you have this 2007 stuff... then you have a few other fun ones like that time he almost killed himself jumping into the water jerez 2010 or the chair in le mans 2010 melandri thought was like, sophisticated subliminal mind games via the colour of the chair. what an incredible sentence to type out. and of course various championship celebrations but... it did change, he still did the lorenzo's land stuff and the jumping on the podium, but it also changed a bit tonally? a little more defiant, not always wanting to give a gift to the fans as much it was rubbing it in their faces. valentino is unique in that he has these kinda staged celebrations over the span of so many years, so you do also have a little bit of an arc there. the way he's changed his approach over those years, when he kinda went back to that over the years and what that meant to him (cf 2003-04) - but then the memorable celebrations post-2006 are really the spontaneous ones (kissing the corkscrew, pointing to the 99, celebrating to the empty jerez grandstands). it's a well he keeps coming back to in one way or the other, but it's hardly a uniform approach. jorge's celebrations tail off way sooner in his career way more sharply - and beyond his actual popularity or lack thereof with the general fanbase at that time, that's probably part of why they haven't stuck in people's minds in the same way

When it comes to learning about the imaginary realm of creations, whether fashioned by the pen, discussed through word or simply express in each artist's language, it felt as if there was a ravine of treasures awaiting him. Terminology such as spin-offs he's seen met with mixed reception on the internet, while the initial thought in his mind was Isn't it better if there's more? His journey within Penacony has broadened his horizon on a few matters.

Keeping a spirited sense of the base concept's authenticity felt like a important pre-requisite.

A sense of wonder courses through Caelus as he scoots closer, hands placed upon the table, a ways away from the parchment of his work as he surveys again, again and again. Simply admiring how the work of pen, pencil and the golden note of practice managed to draw this concept to the living world.

Somehow, there's a sentimental note that rings as Welt explains the motivations. A prideful flame blooms within the Trailblazer's chest, coursing freely, extending to each and every member of the Astral Express in question. It felt impossible to keep such a jubilant expression at bay when the pieces just click. "Just like us, just like the Express." The words found themselves freed without second thought.

When it comes down to it, their beliefs may differ, they each hold a pillar of resolve that serves as shining stars amidst the deep cosmos of space, nonetheless they come together happily with courage in their hearts. He couldn't deny the emotional stir as a certain hat blooms into being, pressed close to Caelus's chest as he turns to Welt.

It was... Hard to put exactly how he feel into words. How do you articulate appreciation like this exactly?

the double and cql both heavily involve reputation, and in the double specifically plot events lean on manipulating the opinions of large groups of people. in cql it's played for everything from comedy to tragedy as wwx is turned on by the masses and his reputation is torn to shreds, and ultimately discarded as irrelevant, or at least less important than the moral standards and personal loyalty/love the characters strive to hold themselves to, in the end as lwj throws away the shining reputation he'd cultivated in favor of standing up for wwx and doing what really matters to him, and as wwx realizes how fickle and self-serving the greater cultivation world really is as it pivots its scapegoating from himself to jgy as soon as jgy's crimes come to light. like, reputation matters in that its a form of protection, but wwx (and later lwj) reject that protection because their moral compasses and loyalty to each other and their ideals demand unorthodox but righteous action that alienate them from conventional cultivation society. wwx walked his single plank bridge into the dark and he did it alone and he did it knowing the rest of the world hated him for it and probably would forever. but he had no other way forward. its just that eventually, he didn't have to be alone anymore

How did Steve win exactly?? Because try as I might, I can’t count him leaving everything (and everyone) behind as a win. It might count as a first step, maybe. A faltering attempt towards healing, but definitely not a win.

He was at his lowest when he left, and brought with him all the baggage collected over thirty years of trauma. We don’t know if leaving actually helped, if setting out for parts unknown gave him the peace he was looking for. We don’t know because we weren’t told anything about it. The EP left us on that beach with Danny, with not even a reassurance that Steve would be back. So based on that, on what we saw, how did this hero win?

Keep thinking about...how Molly would've reacted if the Somnovem's Eyes ever awakened for him, if he had the chance to unlock that much power and just embrace it.

And I really do believe he would've never given in to the temptation. Thinking of...how he fought with Lucien and tried to talk him out of succumbing to the Somnovem's influence until the very end, how he desperately tried to understand--bargained, pleaded, defied him until the last moment. Thinking of the city falling apart all around them, Lucien himself tearing to pieces--Molly's horrified cry of, "Who dreams like this?" Thinking of how Mollymauk had every right to despise Lucien for what he did to him, and yet...Molly still cares enough to reach out a hand to him, to offer him the second chance that no one else would.

I think it's a combination of a lot different moving parts that made Mollymauk Tealeaf someone who would never take the Somnovem's bargain. Lucien was abandoned by all his family, abused and thrown away. But even though he awoke so alone and Empty, Molly was still embraced by a loving family, still found so much joy and love in a world he knew was, "harsh and cruel."

When his partner dies, he doesn't give in to despair; he mourns her, always carries her with him. But he also lets himself come to peace with her passing; always holds her close, yet still keeps moving forward and finding happiness--like she always wanted for him.

Whereas Lucien pushed away the Moonweaver's gentle touch at every turn, Molly wholeheartedly embraced her warmth. She reaches out to him again and again, between every painful death, ferrying him from one life to the next and giving him a softer place to land. Reminding him when he opens his eyes again "for the first time in the longest time," that it was love that made him.

And of course, Molly never wanted this. When he accidentally unlocked one of Lucien's powers for the first time, Taliesin describes him having "a mild nervous breakdown." He's terrified of the person Lucien's become, knows in his heart that he was cruel and vicious, the kind of person Molly wanted nothing to do with. He's desperate to keep from falling down the same path, so he runs from everything Lucien ever embraced.

"Whoever it was came to that end, and I want nothing to do with that. Whatever it was, it doesn't feel good when I--when something creeps through, I don't like it. I don't want anything to do with it. I was happy! I liked the circus! The circus was great!" Molly covers up the Eyes. He tells Cree to forget the book. He tries to hide his blood hunter abilities from the circus, and conceals the truth about them to the Nein at every turn.

I think a lot of it is also how Mollymauk always had the Nein to ground him. How, even when it seemed he was completely lost to Lucien's control, they never stopped reaching for him. Never stopped believing in him.

Thinking of how Caleb Widogast started off the campaign declaring, "I want to bend reality to my will," yet by the end, he burns away the one bridge back to his past--destroys it so no one else can ever have that kind of power and abuse it. Caleb, who tried so hard to save Molly from becoming that. "I think towards Molly, I say, 'Mollymauk, I am begging you. Hunger for control is insatiable, it will never be enough. Let it go.'" Who begs of him, "Snap out of it Tealeaf. We need you." Who is there to cradle him in the aftermath and promises him, "Empty no longer, Mr. Tealeaf." How the Mighty Nein all risk everything to try and save this one shattered soul. How they make him feel whole.

Thinking of how differently C2 and C3 deal with similar themes, how what could destroy one character might save another. How easily Molly could've fallen into the same trap as Lucien if the Nein weren't with him, if he wasn't so loved and cherished in a world where he still knew such terrible pain and loneliness--
