Doctor Who: Remembrance of the Daleks (25.1, BBC, 1988)
"Frightening, isn't it? To find that there are others better versed at death than human beings."
#classic doctor who#doctor who#remembrance of the daleks#1988#bbc#seven#ben aaronovitch#andrew morgan#sylvester mccoy#sophie aldred#simon williams#pamela salem#karen gledhill#dursley mclinden#terry molloy#george sewell#jasmine breaks#michael sheard#harry fowler#joseph marcell#peter halliday#unlike my last few classic who watches‚ where I've been catching up on serials that somehow eluded me as a youth‚ this one is an old#favourite; actually it may be if not the first bit of Who i ever saw then the earliest bit i remember seeing (not on first transmission tho#as i was not quite born). an action packed spectacle (surely one of classic who's grandest fx showings? the dalek shuttle landing in the#playground STILL looks impressive in 2023) and an intelligently scripted plot which elevates a bit of standard back and forth shenanigans#i probably didn't pick up on the refs to fascism as a nipper‚ but kudos to Aaronovitch for threading in a commentary on racism that feels#organic and genuine and not just stuffed in. goes easier on the continuity refs than Attack of the Cybermen but there's some nice callbacks#and it's lovely that they got old Who hands like Sheard and Halliday to fill in some of the smaller parts. also Prof Jensen and Allison my#beloveds; such wonderfully drawn characters full of dry wit and real exasperation‚ responding genuinely to an incredible situation#perhaps not the high octane masterpiece i remember from my youth‚ but a very solid bit of old who and a wholesome revisit

Amy and Sheldon in their HP merch through the seasons. Amy is a Hufflepuff (confirmed 2 times) and Sheldon is a Gryffindor (confirmed 3 times). I think it's a nice touch that the writers didn't go "their nerds lol their obvs Ravenclaws".
I think it sort of fits? Amy is very unpretentious and loyal, Sheldon has a kind of bravado about him. Both have, in each their own way, a strong sense of fairness. It's a small detail, but I like that they don't get reduced to their intellect.

I wish that the girls reading the comics and slowly coming to appreciate them stuck with TBBT after the Bakersville episode.
As a female nerd, that's one of the only things that bothered me about the show.
Like why couldn't Amy get into Star Wars?
Why Couldn't Penny get invested in Marvel/DC comics?
Why couldn't Bernedette become obsessed with anime/manga?
Like I know that some girls don't like it and at the time they weren't as Mainstream, but these things aren't just for men, and them rolling their eyes and calling it "stupid" alienates women who enjoy those things.

Leonard: "Well, now that you can focus again, why don't you say we get back to the surface tension of domain walls." Sheldon: "Of course, I'm already seeing a more efficient way of taming the ultravi - I know why the song was in my head!" Penny: "Why?" Sheldon: "It's about Amy! ... It's about how she made my life better! Consider the lyrics: 'I was living like half a man. Then I couldn't love, but now I can. More soul than I ever had. I love the way you soften my life." Penny: "Well, she did soften your life, didn't she." Sheldon: "Yes! She's like the dryer sheets of my heart! I have to go!" The Big Bang Theory Season 9x10 The Earworm Reverberation

Gtggtv Harry potter tfp au stuff because I have nothing better to do :•))
Fowler is a wizard and he went to Ivermorny (idk if the spelling is right). but he was really fascinated by aircrafts so after graduating he went on to live as a muggle. The government obviously knows he's a wizard (and that's one of the reasons they hired him to work with bots).
June is a squib and her father is a wizard. She knows where to get basic potions and stuff like that.
Jack is kind of a wizard(?). He can only do things from a specific range of spells (the occlumency/mind ones).
Miko is not a witch but when she learned they actually exist she could not be stopped.
Raf is also not a wizard BUT two of his siblings are so he is familiar with the wizarding world.
Harry potter books exist in this world (it's the "if we write a book about it people will think it's less likely to exist" sort of thing)

A Murder at the End of the World
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
A Murder at the End of the World (2023, USA)
Directors: Brit Marling & Zal Batmanglij
Writers: Brit Marling, Zal Batmanglij, Melanie Marnich & Rebecca Roanhorse
Mini-review:
I've been a huge fan of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij ever since their Sound of My Voice days, so I was really excited about their return with a murder mystery, one of my favorite genres. Thankfully, they managed to set up a pretty interesting mystery that got me hooked from its first episode. That being said, I was much more invested in the flashback storyline than in the retreat one, and I think I would have enjoyed a full version of that more than the actual show. And honestly, I didn't like the final episode. I understand the point of it all, but it just felt anticlimactic, and like it was trying way too hard to be deep and relevant. Regardless of my problems with some of the writing, I must praise the production design. All the sets look really expensive and luxurious, and they make for a fully believable futuristic hotel. To sum up, the weak ending means that A Murder at the End of the World is far from perfect, but it's still a pretty fun murder mystery with a touch of science-fiction.
