NFC WEST🏈🏉 BREAKDOWN

Kyler Murray and the Cardinals started hot but fizzled out quickly.

Harrison Jr (aside week 2 explosion) has been a rookie growing pains for fantasy.

Connor has been wildly inconsistent.

Kyler himself had been hemming and hawing with Dortch and Michael Wilson instead of targeting the franchise high draft pick.

TE McBride has only just come on lately but that's partly due to this TE enigma trend plaguing the league

Prater was hurt but has been servicable...mostly.

And the defense, not even worth mentioning smh.

The Seahawks have been competitive. Geno for one had probably been the most reliable and consistent QB in fantasy.

Metcalf has been hot & cold but mostly usable. JSN has shown flashes but really has surpassed Lockett.

TEs aren't worth writing home about. Streamers at best.

The darling of the season of the Hawks is Walker. When healthy, he has been the fantasy stud. Zach C. Has been amazing as a handcuff can be producing about the same when Walker is out.

Kicker Myers has been decent.

Defense tho... matchup dependent.

Rams have had it bad. Kupp goes down in week2 and Puka not so long after. This has made Stafford fall in reliability.

TEs aren't matchup dependent and defense is laughable.

We saw a glimpse of the fire power in TNF when the WRs returned in the early week 8 matchup.

Kyrein has being the fantasy darling as he never fails to score in each game

Purdy hasn't looked pretty as of late. The situation worsened when (in the same game) Aiyuk and Deebo went down. Jennings was a waiver wire warrior for fantasy teams. Moody getting hurt sucks. His replacement has missed a few fgs smh. Kittle surprisingly has been one of the top TEs *not just by name*. The CMC injury put teams in a tails pin unless they had or acquired Mason. Mason has been a steal for teams. The defense can be up & down - more so than past seasons. Aiyuk was a disappointment.

NASA prepares for Lunar Terrain Vehicle testing

When astronauts return to the moon as part of NASA's Artemis campaign, they will benefit from having a human-rated unpressurized LTV (Lunar Terrain Vehicle) that will allow them to explore more of the lunar surface, enabling diverse scientific discoveries.

As crewed Artemis missions near, engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston are designing an unpressurized rover prototype, known as the Ground Test Unit. The test unit will employ a flexible architecture to simulate and evaluate different rover concepts for use beginning with Artemis V.

In April 2024, as part of the Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services contract, NASA selected three vendors—Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost, and Venturi Astrolab—to supply rover capabilities for use by astronauts on the lunar surface. While the test unit will never go to the moon, it will support the development of additional rover prototypes that will enable NASA and the three companies to continue making progress until one of the providers comes online.

Additionally, data provided from GTU testing helps inform both NASA and the commercial companies as they continue evolving their rover designs as it serves as an engineering testbed for the LTV providers to test their technologies on crew compartment design, rover maintenance, and payload science integration, to name a few.

"The Ground Test Unit will help NASA teams on the ground, test and understand all aspects of rover operations on the lunar surface ahead of Artemis missions," said Jeff Somers, engineering lead for the Ground Test Unit. "The GTU allows NASA to be a smart buyer, so we are able to test and evaluate rover operations while we work with the LTVS contractors and their hardware."

The LTVS contractors have requirements that align with the existing GTU capabilities. As with the test unit, the vendor-developed, LTV should support up to two crewmembers, have the ability to be operated remotely, and can implement multiple control concepts such as drive modes, self-leveling, and supervised autonomy. Having a NASA prototype of the vehicle we will drive on the moon, here on Earth, allows many teams to test capabilities while also getting hands-on engineering experience developing rover hardware.

NASA has built some next generation rover concept vehicles following the successes of the agency's Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle in the 1970s, including this iteration of the GTU. Crewed test vehicles here on Earth like the GTU help NASA learn new ways that astronauts can live and work safely and productively on the moon, and one day on the surface of Mars.

As vendor designs evolve, the contracted LTV as well as the GTU allow for testing before missions head to the moon. The vehicles on the ground also allow NASA to reduce some risks when it comes to adapting new technologies or specific rover design features.

Human surface mobility helps increase the exploration footprint on the lunar surface allowing each mission to conduct more research and increase the value to the scientific community. Through Artemis, NASA will send astronauts—including the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut—to explore the moon for scientific discovery, technology evolution, economic benefits, and to build the foundation for future crewed missions to Mars.

What the actual F$*% was Week 2?

With teams reaching Dick Cheney levels of conservative when it comes to playing their starters in the preseason, it only makes sense to take the first month of the season with a grain of salt as teams learn to gel together and assimilate to regular season speed. That being said, Week 2 gave us the most laughably batshit crazy outcomes imaginable and turned the league completely upside down. Our staff vigorously questioned what was in that newest strain we paired with the Sunday action as the results unfolded.

Yet through sober eyes now that the smoke has cleared, we can confirm each of the following stories is true. Two weeks in, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are the front runners for MVP, the Saints are a threshing machine, and Justin Fields is 2-0. Warning the following content may disturb some readers.

Rams vs Cardinals

Coming into Sunday’s matchup, Sean McVay owned the Cardinals with an all-time record of 13-2 against Arizona. And between a bitterly disappointing rookie debut from Marvin Harrison Jr., a nonexistent Cardinals’ pass rush in Week 1, and the Rams taking the Lions to overtime in Detroit the week before, there was plenty of reason to believe that trend would continue. Then MHJ reminded us all why he was the top receiver taken in this draft, exploding for 130 yards and two touchdowns on only four receptions.

But it wasn’t just the Offense, with its 489 total yards of production, that put on an absolute clinic against LA. The Cardinals’ defense held the Rams to less than 300 total yards, while their anemic Pass Rush that recently failed to make Josh Allen so much as look over his shoulder, managed to sack Stafford five times. To make matters worse, one of the trendiest picks to take the NFC this year is now without Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and basically their entire Offensive Line after two weeks. They now find themselves sitting at 0-2 for the first time in Sean McVay’s career as a Head Coach, right before facing the next team that was on the wrong side of a baffling outcome.

49ers vs Vikings

The student may very quickly have become the master as Sam Darnold (yes that Sam Darnold) outdueled the Quarterback he sat behind last year with his new team. While it’s impossible to discount the impact that Christian McCaffrey makes for this team, the Niners are still largely the same squad that came comically close to winning it all last year, while Darnold is on his fourth team since 2018 for a reason. But for whatever reason, the Kevin O’Connell/Brian Flores combo just gives Shanahan and Co fits they can’t seem to handle.

Those fits included a blocked punt, an interception, a fumble, multiple turnovers on downs, and a 97 yard touchdown from Darnold to Justin Jefferson, the highest paid receiver in the league for a reason. Dominating the Giants in Week 1 was cute, but getting the best of the reigning NFC Champions is a statement. Maybe the fourth time is the charm?

Lions vs Bucs

Credit where credit is due, the Bucs played the Lions tough in the divisional round last year, losing a spirited one-score affair. But Baker Mayfield has always been great when he’s been doubted only to crash and burn the minute people believe in him. Yet as we alluded to earlier, Baker Mayfield is on a tear so far this season, tied for first in the league in touchdowns amongst quarterbacks despite getting paid (whom he shares that distinction with, is every bit as insane).

On the other side of this rematch, 4th Down aggression bit Dan Campbell in the kneecaps once again late in the 4th Quarter, while confusion between the Offense and Special teams earlier in the game cost them a field goal. Goff didn’t help much either throwing two interceptions and going 1 of 7 in the red zone which fucked oh so many fantasy teams out there. Tampa Bay looks primed to defend its division title, but to do that they’ll have to go through the QB who shares Baker’s league lead in touchdowns and just dominated in

Cowboys vs Saints

Dallas coming off an unbelievable high and feeling invincible only to immediately lose to an opponent they absolutely shouldn’t will never stop being funny. Inarguably the most vocal fanbase in the league, they find a way to be brought back to reality the minute they start getting high off their own supply. While it’s not inconceivable for Dallas to lose to a lesser team, the manner in which the Saints went marching in to AT&T Stadium was particularly surprising.

Carr had a 125.0 passer rating, Kamara punched in 3 scores including a 57 yarder off a screen pass, and Dak was pulled in the Fourth Quarter ending the Cowboys’ 16 game home winning streak in emphatic fashion. New Orleans blowing out Carolina was one thing, but annihilating the Cowboys on their turf for the first time in the regular season since Tom Brady himself did it in Week 1 of the 2022 was truly a mindfuck we didn’t see coming. With a point differential of +62 two weeks in, it’s time to stop underestimating the Saints.

Raiders vs Ravens

How in God’s name did Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry get outdueled at home by Gardner fucking Minshew with a 10 point lead in the 4th Quarter??? We love Gardner Minshew, he’s a fucking maniac who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know and has never had a single fuck to give. But him outdueling a two-time MVP is like Uncle Rico outdueling……Lamar Jackson! That said don’t look now, but Minshew is currently 2nd in the NFL in passing yards.

The fact of the matter is Baltimore might feature the scariest rushing combo in the league and still couldn’t ice this game behind the roars of their fans. In a fortnight, the Ravens have gone from strong Super Bowl bets to being in danger of missing the playoffs (less than 11% of teams that start 0-2 have reached the postseason in the past decade). To make matters worse their next 3 games are against the Cowboys, Bills, and division rival Bengals. What the actual flock.

Rams fall flat against Arizona 

Week 2 was a tough day for the Los Angeles Rams at the office. It was too much Kyler Murray, too much Marvin Harrison Jr., and too much James Conner. The Arizona Cardinals triplets came to work and helped put the Rams into an 0-2 deficit for the season.  Murray had a nearly flawless afternoon, connecting on 17 of 21 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns with zero turnovers. Harrison showed everyone why he was a first-round draft pick making four catches for 130 and two scores.  Conner bullied his way to 122 yards and a touchdown. All three Arizona players were catalysts in the Cardinals’ 41-10 win against the Rams. These are humbling moments,” McVay went on to say.     Nothing went quite right for McVay’s team. Murray looked like a scutterbug genius, passing and darting his way past defenders all afternoon. On the other side of the coin, the Rams could not get untracked offensively against an aggressive Arizona defense.  The 216 yards that quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for were mostly meaningless. The run game for the Rams wasn’t happening on this day. Kyren Williams (12 attempts, 25 yards) and Blake Corum (8 carries, 28) could not crack the 100-yard marker as a pair.     “Disappointing day,” Stafford said. “Not the way that we wanted we wanted to come out and play. There’s no question about that. Hidden Figures (2016)

I finally watched Hidden Figures, my god the main cast is brilliant. Jim Parsons was great, considering I only know him from the Big Bang Theory (not great). The costume department absolutely cooked. Janelle Monae was a standout and looked incredible through the whole thing. Taraji P Henson delivered her monologues like they were coming from her soul. Octavia Spencer has this diplomatic but defiant confidence in so many of her roles and I eat it up.

One of the parts I loved was that the prejudiced white people weren't painted as uniquely malicious, they acted how most people do now - they existed in a system that allowed them to say "that's just how things are" and refused to see the forest for the trees (because the system affords them power). This was really hammered home when Mrs. Mitchell says to Dorothy Vaughan than she doesn't have anything against her, and Dorothy replies something to the effect of "I know you believe that."

It's a really effective commentary on how individuals can see themselves as not participating in systems of oppression, despite being the very lynchpins that hold the whole thing together. Hidden Figures does what I wish Barbie did: it baked the commentary on oppression into the story instead of putting it over top. It wasn't too sanctimonious - it felt real. It allows viewers to extrapolate to other systems of inequality (hopefully).

It was corny in some points, but it stayed true to the fact that women like Katherine Goble had to be beyond perfect to inhabit their roles. They fought every day to do what they cared about, and the men they worked around were forced to adapt to their presence. Al Harrison wasn't a saviour, he was an strict boss who was willing to learn. Katherine was working longer hours than all of her colleagues, just to have her math thrown out as soon as it landed on the higher up's desk. She was paid less than her colleagues. She was desperately needed, but treated as if her work was redundant. And the oppression wasn't resolved at the end, just as we know it wasn't in real life. Katherine was recognized as a brilliant mathematician, but she was still subject to a lot of disrespect even after saving the whole mission. I appreciate that the movie didn't wrap it up in a bow of "racism is over", because we know that it wasn't and still isn't.

The film also created tension really well, considering we know the IRL outcomes already. It is difficult to make an audience invested in a story where they already know the outcome - you need to make them deeply invested in the inner lives of the characters. Hidden Figures accomplished this through a lot of "show, don't tell" (as opposed to Barbie, which was all tell). It was impressive how well the actors expressed quiet disdain for Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary when they realized they were present. Kirstin Dunst in particular did this well when Dorothy entered the white women's office to speak about the Supervisor position. I am always impressed when actors can actually make micro-expressions.

Anyways, I liked it. The only complaint I can list off the top of my head is that the main characters were not imperfect enough. Aside from being potentially over-committed to their work in a period which saw women as needing to be central to child-rearing, there was very little complexity to their personalities. I think that pitching real people as the perfect underdog does a disservice to their realities, because all humans are highly nuanced. The film accomplished this nuance for the peripheral characters like Harrison and Stafford, but it didn't commit to it nearly as much for the main trio. I like messy women in film.

Thomson Mason (1733-1785) was born at Chopawamsic Plantation in Stafford County, VA to the powerful Mason family. Instead of deep delving into his political career, we focused on his fourteen page will, and the impressive amount of control he tried to exert even after his death. Over his lifetime, he accrued property in Stafford, Prince William, Loudoun, Richmond, and other regions and was most eager to dictate every detail. Below are some of the more interesting excerpts with our commentary.

Thomson Mason married twice. First to Mary King Barnes (before 1758-1771). They had four children: Stevens Thomson Mason (1760-1803), Abram Barnes Thomson Mason (1763-1813), John Thomson Mason (1765-1824), and Ann Thomson Mason (1769-1817). Although originally buried at Gunston Hall, her body was later moved to Raspberry Plain in Loudoun County. Thomson Mason married Elizabeth Westwood (1740-1824) in 1777, previously married to Rev. James Wallace. She also had four children with Thomson Mason, Dorothea Anna Thomson Mason (1778-1822), Westwood Thomson Mason (1780-1826), William Temple Thomson Mason (1782-1862), and George Thomson Mason (d. 1873).

“…my body I wish to have interred upon my Son Stephen’s Plantation in Loudoun so that the foot of my Coffin may touch the head of my Son George’s, and that a Space may be left on each side of me, to receive those of my two Wives, if my present wife should desire that her remains may be beside mine, & I desire that my son Stephen will remove those of his Mother from the family burying Ground, at my brothers for that purpose, As to my worldly Estate I give of it as follows – Imprimis I give to my beloved wife Elizabeth, all the Estate of whatever nature that shall be remaining at my death, of what I gained by marriage with her. Item I give to my said Wife, during her natural life, clear of the Mortgages, and other Incumbrances on it, all my lands on Chappawamsick Run, in County of Stafford, which lye below the lands of the Revered. Mr. Harrison, & bounded by lands of the late Mr. Moncure, Mr. Adie, the Rev’d Mr. Harrison, & Chappawamsick Run, & all my lands on the said Run in the County of Prince William, which lye below the lands of Coll. Burr Harrison, Robert Carter, Esqr., Mr. John Hedges, & the said Chappawamsick Run, containing 1220 acres, in the two Tracts more or less, reserving out of the Lands, to my son John Thomson Mason, & his heirs, his choice of 50 acres, to be laid off in a Square for a Sear on which side the run he pleases, so that it does not include the gardens, Orchard, or any of the Housing, in County of Stafford, or any of the low grounds, in the same County, and after death of my Wife, I give the Reversion of all the said Lands, to my said son John Thomson Mason & Heirs, provided he attains the age of twenty one years; and I hereby declare that I intend this device to my wife, in Barr of her Dower of my other lands in Stafford and Prince William Counties, but not in Barr of her Dower of any other lands she may be entitled to elsewhere.”

Mason referenced participating in William Byrd’s (1728-1777) lottery. Byrd’s ostentatious lifestyle led to a considerable amount of debt, some of which he tried to pay in the form of a lottery. He prized most of his estate at the falls of the James River, hoping to raise 50,000 pounds by selling tickets in both Virginia and England. While his entire life deserves one or more blogs, it is sufficient for now to know he swore allegiance to the King of England during the Revolutionary War, and we can see some of the ramifications in Mason’s will.

“I give my son Stephens Thomson Mason & Heirs, the unimproved  Lotts in the Town of Richmond & Manchester which was drawn in the late Collo. Byrd’s lottery, by Tickets marked with the Initials of his Mother’s or his Brother George’s name. Item, I give to my son Stephens Thomson Mason & Heirs, the Ground in the Town of Richmond, on which the Public Store House lately stood, together with the money due from the public for the valuation of the said Store House, and all the arrearages of Rent…which will appear from my books & all arrerages of Rent due from the public or Turner Southall, who took possession thereof immediately after the Death of Miles Taylor, with my knowledge or consent, and kept possession thereof until it was destroyed by General Arnold; and I think he is intitled to recover Damages of the said Turner Southall, he having converted the said House without my Leave into a public arsenal, by which means it was destroyed by the British under General Arnold…��

When it came to dividing his enormous landholdings, Mason devised that certain land be divided for his sons to do as they pleased after they reached the age of 21, leaving it uncleared for timber until then. He also had a mill set in motion.

“Item I direct that the Mill now begun, shall as soon as possible be finished off, a complete Merchant Mill, with two part of Stones, one pair of which at least shall be double Burr and that another set of Mills, with two parts of Stones, shall be built at the expence of my Estate upon the same run near the Mouth thereof as soon as may be & that the said Mills when finished, and all my Lands in Loudon County, between the Main County road, the Limestone Run & Potomach River, & the Cool Spring Run, together with the cleared lands on the Plantation, now rented by Fouchee, below the Mill run be also rented for the benefit of my Estate for twenty years, that four horses, four Mares, six Servant Men & one Servant woman be immediately purchased, & placed together with six Milch cows and twelve breeding sows, & worked thereon, for four years after my death, but that not more than 40 acres of fresh land shall be cleared within the bounds…”

He specified that his son Abraham would have sole management of the mills, but under strict instructions on how to divide the profit, what he could purchase (mainly enslaved persons and stock), and conditions if the mill was not profitable within a short period of time. Not surprisingly, he had similar rules for other mills.

“Item I direct that a Merchant Mill be built on Chappawamsic Run, on the lands given to my son John, where he shall direct, not to exceed the expence of four hundred pounds, which expence is to be repaid out of the profits of the Mill, in part of his Sister’s Nancy fortune…”

Here he specified everything from the names of the enslaved to the names of the prized riding horses, such as Rupert, along with other horses and colts. He also included,

“…that two indented farming white Sevants be purchased for John who have four or five years to serve, provided they do not exceed the price of thirty pounds each…”

For his wife, he left all his household furniture at Errol and Chopawamsic, stock of cattle, sheep, goats, cows, oxen, hogs, ewes, horses, his chariot and harness, and mares. For the enslaved,

“I give to my wife my negro girl Pegg till January 1789 and I direct that one Negro girl between age of sixteen and twenty be purchased by my Executor for my wife, within three years of my death and I direct that another Negro Girl and two Negro lads between age of 16 and 20 be purchased for my wife, by my Executor, within six years of my death and I give said Slaves, in Trust for use of my wife for her life and to uses she shall direct by her last Will and Testament…it being my intention that the four slaves with their increase shall be for the separate use of my Wife without the Interposition of any husband she may marry.”

She also received the promise of “geered Mill” to be constructed and maintained on Pearson’s Run. For his two youngest sons,

“…may be put to learning English, at one of their Guardians Houses till eight years of age, and that then they be kept at Writing, arithmetic, and reading elegant English Authors and modern languages till they are 12 years of age, and then to be kept at learning the Latin Language, Book keeping, Mathematicks, and other Useful branches of literature, till the age of 18, and then to be put out to such Business or profession as their Genius’s are best calculated for. Item I particularly direct that neither of my younger sons shall reside on the South side of James River, or below Williamsburgh, before they respectively attain age of 21 years, lest they should imbibe more exalted notions of their own importance than I could wish any child of mine, to possess.”

His thoroughness continued.

“Item I give the use of my Gold watch, to my wife till a new Gold watch with an embossed case and Equipage suitable for a Lady, of the price of 30 Guineas can be purchased for her out of my Estate, and as soon as such Gold watch and equipage is furnished for her I give my gold watch to my son Westwood. Item I give to my daughter Ann Thomson Mason the equipage that was her mother’s and direct that a gold Watch of twenty Guineas value be purchased for her. Item I give to my sons Abraham, John and Westwood and Temple such a horizontal Silver watch, when they arrive at the age of twenty one years, and I give to my son John Thomson Mason my brass barreled Pistols.”

Two of the enslaved persons received special accommodations.

“Item I direct that my Negro boy Jack be allowed to settle upon any of my land in Loudon Stafford or Prince William, and that my Executors lay off for him, 30 acres of good arable land 10 acres of pasturage, to tend a crop for himself, build him a barn of Loggs, 20 feet square and furnish him with 1 cow, 2 sows, 1 Ewe and a Mare of ten pounds value, one barshare plow, one Dutch plow, 1 broad Hooe, 1 narrow hooe, 1 axe, 1 mattock, 5 barrels of oats, 5 barrels Rye, 5 Bushels Wheat and 10 barrels of Corn, to stock his Plantation and set him forward, and let him have one month’s work of an able negro man and the loan of my ox cart, for the same time, to put his little farm in order with Liberty to get Rails and fire wood off my adjactent lands and I direct thr whole profits of his farm and the Stock given him be at his own Disposal and over and above the bore mentioned provisions. I also give him the annual sum of six pounds specie, the use of the lands I give him for life and the Stock forever; and I hereby direct that my Executors and Heirs all join in protecting of my said slave Jack, in all his just rights, and the he shall be subject to the control of no person whatsoever, and this provision I have made for him as a grateful acknowledgment of the Remarkable fidelity and Integrity, with which he has conducted himself to me for twenty years and upwards. I also give to my said Slave Jack, 300 weight of pork to be paid him in the year I shall dye.

Item I direct that if every my maid Catina should be parted from my Wife, that she also receive 200 weight of Pork, a White shift, and a Callico Gown and petticoat annually…”

Thomson Mason died on 02/26/1785. Interestingly, Elizabeth Mason appeared in front of Stafford County Court on 10/10/1785, to declare she would,

“not accept, receive, or take any Legacy, or Legacies or any part thereof, to me given by last will and Testament of my late Husband Thomson Mason Esquire, and do renounce all benefit and advantage which I might claim under the said Will.”

Why would she contest the will? Given that he had eight children, four with his former wife Mary King Barnes, she could have protested the distribution of inheritance or the rules concerning her dowry if she were to remarry or remain a widow. A will that went so far to specify who would determine the proportion of meat given to enslaved persons, could create chaos if the provisions were not desirable as Thomson Mason clearly tried to control his wife, children, and property from beyond the grave. He often noted the conditions of her dower, a crucial element to her livelihood as a widow. The legal rights of women in the 1780s solely depended upon their marital status. Different rules and rights applied to single, married, and widows, and often widowers experienced the most freedom. Almost immediately, Thomson Mason noted Elizabeth’s dower,

“and after death of my Wife, I give the Reversion of all the said Lands, to my said son John Thomson Mason & Heirs, provided he attains the age of twenty one years; and I hereby declare that I intend this device to my wife, in Barr of her Dower of my other lands in Stafford and Prince William Counties, but not in Barr of her Dower of any other lands she may be entitled to elsewhere.”

On 11/14/1797, a different Elizabeth Mason submitted a similar document to the Fairfax County court protesting her deceased husband, George Mason V’s, will. Scholars believe she renounced his will because of the consequences of remarriage and the inheritance of the two oldest children. Ultimately, she won with a 1799 deed that preserved most of the original document’s language but removed stipulations regarding her widowhood and/or remarriage and granted her more property at the expense of her son’s inheritance.

While the Mason family was extremely powerful, Thomson Mason’s attempts to control the years and decades following his death were remarkable, especially given the country’s emerging and still very fragile independence and identity. From an economic and moralistic perspective, Mason created a will that probably caused a few headaches.
