I don't want Aang to kill Ozai, but I do want a satisfying ending, and deus ex-machinas are rarely satisfying.
The Lion Turtle was not in any way satisfying.
I think the point that a last minute, never properly foreshadowed magical solution, that has no connection to previous arcs, doesn't give Aang any kind of emotional victory at all.
It certainly does nothing to help anyone in the audience who struggles with a pacifist dilemma. None of us can rely on a magic lion turtle.
It gives no glory or acknowledgement to the air nomads either - which is a shame because that in itself would be a powerful point. Aang holding true to his core beliefs and finding strength in them could be a great message for pacifist audience members.
The thing is that this is the ultimate battle and it should have some foreshadowing leading up to it and some emotional catharsis.
I think a more powerful option would be to link it directly with the air nomads, have energy bending be a lost air bending art, so that when Aang uses it, it truly is a victory of the air benders, of love and peace over hate, of pacifism over violence.
Things I would have done -
I would have mentioned early, like Northern Air temple season 1 early, that a very few select airbenders could energy bend and give/take away bending.
@atlaculture has a whole post about how the air benders were the most spiritual and how the spirit character is part of theirs. I could see this as being a rare rare rare skill, and due to the nature and wisdom of the air nomads, it was one that they rarely used and certainly never on other nations - hence why there is little knowledge of it outside airbender temples.
I would treat it like lightning bending for fire. Jeong jeong is a master, but he can't do lightning etc. Aang is a master, but he never learned this technique. It takes decades of practice etc etc. I'd have in on a mural early, and have Teo point it out and then have Aang explain what it means. I'd have Teo make an interested face.
After Aang has had all the turmoil around his culture and come to accept that the temple now houses refugees and sees that Te'o has the spirit of an airbenders, I'd have Teo ask if Aang could use energy bending on him.
Poor Aang, having to face to that he doesn't know how. This bit of culture from his people and he's the last one and he doesn't know?! He doesn't know and now there is no one left to teach him. That would be an emotional gut punch, and really bring home the genocide and what it actually means. Sometimes incredible culture practises do get lost forever and it should be acknowledged and mourned.
The genocide is only directly acknowledged twice in the whole show, and I don't want to be a bummer, but it is a crucial part of Aang as a character and could have been explored a little more.
The next time I would mention it could be the library. Aang could mention it, and Wa Shi Tong would refuse. The knowledge of spirit bending is completely sacred, was granted to only a few of the oldest and wisest, who had earned the trust of the spirits, Aang is too young to have acquired the wisdom to use it, mankind cannot be trusted etc etc. i would make it a rant that's gearing up and then for a comedic beat have Aang cut him off and be like 'I'll just go help Sokka'
Then, in season 3, when Aang is having his spiritual crisis, I would have Yangchen be the one to show him, through cryptic advice obvs. Something about being pure of heart and pure of spirit will bring peace. I'd have her give a similar warning as the lion turtle - that it is not to be trifled with.
But what a treasure and what a theme. This lost cultural art can still be passed up through the generations when love and care and curiosity combine to make searching for and reviving a skill a goal for someone.
Nothings lost forever, it just changes shape etc.
Aang learning from Yangchen, realising the strength of his own wisdom (as the need for wisdom has been heavily emphasized in previous points) and saying, no I won't end all of this violence with more violence. I'm going to do it with love.
It acknowledges his spiritual position without having to denigrate his friends.
It gives him a previous but of his culture back and makes the ending an absolute victory for Air Nomad culture.
It sticks with the themes of the show and makes the ending more emotionally satisfying.
I think people who critize the ending and say Aang killing Ozai would have been a better narrative choice are just frustrated because ATLA is amazing, but Aang's ending is so anticlimactic and lacking in emotional resonance.
Not saying Aang should kill Ozai, but I am saying the Lion turtle was lazy story-telling and this same plot point could have been made in a more emotionally impactful way.
can't believe there are still people out here in the year 2023 that genuinely think aang should have killed ozai

One thing I've noticed about Piltover, not only do they not take disabled people into consideration(i.e. Salo and Viktor), they don't even think about their non-human residents. Steb being the number person to use as my evidence.
Tumblr media
Stebs uniform when we first meet him is the typical enforcer uniform. The only difference is you can clearly see that Steb wasn't given a uniform that took his biology into consideration. The collar of the uniform goes up to the fin that's on the back of head/neck, and for fishes fins can be used to feel around them so I doubt having something rubbing up against the end of it all day is comfortable. Not only that but we know that his ears can move and are seen facing more outwards and away from his head, his hat wouldn't allow that and would make it very uncomfortable. The straps of his hat also cover the gils on his jaw and that as well would be uncomfortable, they're silts in his skin that would most likely allow him to breathe underwater so having fabric rub against it would be uncomfortable.
In conclusion, his uniform wasn't made with him in mind. His uniform would be fine for the typical human, the collar might be annoying but not uncomfortable for some. The hat wouldn't cause discomfort as well, it would be like wearing a typical hat or even just like a helmet. But that's for a human, Steb clearly isn't human. He's more fish-esque than human, his biology is different meaning his needs are different. His uniform doesn't fit those needs.
Tumblr media
His uniform for Caitlyns striketeam is better suited for his needs(at least some of them). The collar goes out more, it's not rubbing up against his fin. His hat is much different, it's no longer covering his ears and it doesn't have straps that covers his gils.
Obviously Caitlyn had a say on the uniforms because they're part of her striketeam but she also took in Stebs needs and how his old uniform wasn't made with him in mind. So she made the suitable changes, even if they don't seem important, for Steb it most likely made his uniform more comfortable.
Tumblr media
His uniform in act3, while it seems different than the others around him based on the fact that it doesn't have a belt and his arm things are black with minimal gold outlines, it still seems like the typical enforcer uniform based on the color scheme. Not only that but it looks similar to his uniform when he was on Caitlyns striketeam.
His collar still pokes out and away from his fin. His hat doesn't cover his ears and it doesn't have a strap that covers his gils.
This uniform takes in his biology, probably more than the two previous ones he wore based on the fact that it looks much more different. Graysons uniform and Marcus' uniform never looked like the one Steb wears in act3 and both of them were of a higher rank than Steb. So it's safe to assume that this new uniform that Steb wears is better sited for his needs.
Basically before all of this, Piltover never took in their non-human residents into consideration when doing things despite having Heimerdinger(a non-human) as a councilor and founder. Steb is a prime example of that, he shows this fact with the different uniforms he wears when on screen.

Thistle’s last act was to revive Marcille.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even while his desires were being fully consumed by the demon, he recognized the threat it posed and, in his final moments before ‘disappearing’, reached for Marcille’s hand. And in the process… seemingly revived her, given the winged lion’s reaction. Wagh…
Tumblr media
Incidentally… this is also part of why Marcille and Laios say this in the second to last chapter. She needed to be revived to revive the rest of the party + break the seal on the demon (which also caused problems… but it all worked out in the end.) Man.

I think the kids from the party wouldn’t connect the dots that there’s something more than friendship going on between Steve and Eddie very fast. Because they’ve now listened for about a year that no Steve and Robin are not together and they don’t want to be either and the two are just weirdly close . Not lovey-dovey affectionate obviously but still super close and rather inseparable. Not to mention the kids also assume that Steve is straight as an arrow. So when Eddie and Steve seem to get closer and closer they just assume they’re good friends now. That it’s the upside down effect or something. Surprised they even get along in the first place.
But who would start suspecting something? Corroded Coffin guys. They know something happened during the spring but not the whole truth so they don’t have the same perspective as the kids. But they see the lingering looks, the lingering hands and touches. They notice when you walk in on them and it looks like they were just holding hands, something that’s easy to miss if you don’t pay attention but they are. They notice how the two gravitate towards each other, sit next to each other when there’s enough room not to be glued together but they choose to be. How they look and smile at each other across the room. See them sharing cigarettes, whispering into each others ears and hear them honest to god giggle at each others’ jokes.
And even when Steve and Eddie are not together and Corroded Coffin have their band practice/ hang outs, when they’re not playing and practicing the songs they usually do, they can catch Eddie strumming his guitar something that undeniably sounds like a love song.
And sure they might know Eddie’s uhm, preferences when it comes to a partner (read: he is gay af) but Steve Harrington? Well it wouldn’t be the first time the guy surprises them. They also didn’t think he was such a nice guy until they got to know him better after he let them have DnD sessions at his house.
Steve’s friendship with Buckley throws them off a little bit at times because those two are tight but then again she is way too unbothered by the fact that Steve and Eddie seem to be making heart eyes at each other every time they’re in the room together. So yeah. They’ll figure this out, they’re on a quest now.

I thought rereading my old childhood comic was funny until I got addicted
Now I’ve become like super obsessed with them n I want to create my own blog for them, yay.
Soooooo uhhhh I’ll prob make a separate post explaining this world a bit cus I’ve changed something’s around mainly concerning personalities (I’m doing cuphead n Felix justice) n relationships. Story wise it’s gonna follow the same beats just with a little bit more progression.
I also don’t know whether I want to start the comic from the beginning or continue where it last left off yk. Idk if anyone cares tho

I see a lot of people also draw fanart for this amazing movie, so I thought I'd join! :) I remember bawling my eyes out like a literal baby at the end of the movie, so now my eyes burn when I think of it and Madeline's theme is on my saved list for sure-
somehow I related so so much to a computer who became sentient from spilled champagne-
Also also is it just me or, like, when I see the "AI who just wants to love" trope I get so happy??? I dunno, I love it sm! very relatable to feel the want to connect despite differences preventing so! even though they can easily just like,,, take ONE glance at an internet forum and see they have people lining up to kiss their flat face they do NOT need to be acting up like they get no game????
