A Martyr From the Ashes
For everyone in the fandom saying saying that Danny thinks Martian ManHunter is cooler than Superman, we don't really see it all that much in writing.
I'mma try and fix that...
~•~•~•~•~•~
The Martian Book of Legends held the heroic tale of Saint Da'han'yul Fen'tuun of Mars, a sickly albino priest of a small town that held marriages, sermons regarding life and how it should be enriched and lived to its fullest, and specialized in funerals that used cremations with fire, a feat thought to be physically impossible by the masses. As people saw him look into the flames without fear while others cowered, rumors spread that the young man was blessed by H'ronmeer himself, the Martian God of Fire, Life, and Death.
People spoke about how Da'han'yul turned down all attempts at courtship, for he had decided to dedicate his life to bring light in the darkest times to all lives in the name of his God. He was a thing of beauty with a gentle soul and shy demeanor, even the Red and Green skinned who had still held a firm belief on the caste system could not deny his charm. How the terminally ill Martian carried on his mission with a smile, nobody knew.
However, tragedy struck on the day that should have spelled the beginning of the end for the Martian people. A parasitic species had invaded the Martian Homeworld and was causing untold havoc. As civilians fled from the threat and prepared a counter offensive, it was Da'han'yul Fen'tuun who charged into the danger headfirst to save his people from becoming prey.
As others pleaded for him to run away, in a great bright flash of light, a gigantic Martian loomed over the enemy emerged where the ill Martian stood, coated in flames in a form they've never seen before with a halo and body that burned a haunting green.
The deafening silence still held as the enormous creature brought a massive fist on the giant pale walker that was destroying homes. A wave of its hand sent a wall of green flames raced towards the foot soldiers, reducing them to ash while his people and buildings were not harmed in any form without an ounce fear of these fires the creature used to purge the enemy. Within the hour, the threat had been neutralized and peace was brought back to the red planet.
As the Martian people looked to the titan, they knew. H'ronmeer's had chosen his most loyal servant, Da'han'yul, as the avatar of his wrath to smite those who would bring his people harm. The people hugged and wept tears of joy and cheered for the priest and H'ronmeer for saving them, but the tears soon became tears of sorrow.
The giant groaned in pain as he fell on one knee as it began to crumble into ash before the people's very eyes. Like a flame, Da'han'yul Fen'tuun had burned his brightest when life needed him most, and now death called to him as it slowly extinguished it to give him peace. With a final message, he pleaded to his people to come together as one and to not see one another as lesser or greater than, but as equals who can help one another in the darkest of times and the hardships yet to come. With his final moments gone, a final telepathic embrace was given to all before he fell silent for the last time.
The massive pile of ash that were his remains was brought back to his little village and made into a beautiful garden of ash in the temple where the newly titled Saint made his home in, where it would be made a holy site that many would come to give their thanks and pay their respects for H'ronmeer' and his champion alike.
And for centuries, peace was held before it was shattered by Ma'alefa'ak, who unleashed the Fire Plague to take vengeance on his people for his inability to experience the psionic way of life that was the norm. His smile as his people screamed in anguish was knocked off his face in the most literal of terms when a Martian struck him down and had him by the throat.
A Martian with eyes burning in anger as Ma'alefa'ak failed to break free and was being beaten severely for his crimes against the people of Mars. A Martian made entirely up of ash and green embers.
Saint Da'han'yul Fen'tuun had returned, if only for a moment longer. And he was not happy.
Quickly, one by one across the planet, the martians set ablaze burned a gentle green that healed them. In this miraculous act of divine intervention, not a single Martian had lost their life. Most were now unconscious with labored breathing being heard.
J'onn watched on as his brother screamed in agony as his body burst into green flames as a pool of ash began to swallow his brother whole. Before disappearing entirely, Da'han'yul told him the punishment his brother would be facing.
"Ma'alefa'ak's psionic abilities have been awoken. He will be sentenced to become a living flame until he has lived the collective life span of all that he has tried to extinguish."
J'onn was too stunned to speak. With how long a Martian can live, it was the equivalent of telling him his brother would be suffering for an eternity. It seemed unethical, but he knew his brother had dug his own grave the moment he saw the reanimated remains of Da'han'yul Fen'tuun's ashes take swift action.
"Everything will be ok now, J'onn. Go to your family and tend to them.
"Da'han'yul...Thank you. I'm sorry I wasn't there to help you when you were still alive." J'onn solemnly uttered as he looked to the ground, unable to look at his deceased youngest brother.
"Nonsense J'onn, it's not your fault...The caste system...it–"
"I could've done more! Instead I saved myself instead of being there when my brothers needed me most!"
"J'onn...you were just a child."
"It makes none of it right!"
He was right in that aspect, but it still didn't feel right. Ma'alefa'ak' was ostracized by society, was treated like a freak of nature for lack of natural gifts and he wanted to burn society to the ground in the most literal of terms because of it.
While Da'han'yul, the forgotten youngest brother, was treated horribly for being albino and treated cruelly. He contracted a deadly disease when he separated himself from the family to live in isolation with other albinos that made him sickly and cut his life expectancy down severely. Knowing what befell him, seeing him struggle to move and hold down food at times while J'onn and their parents did nothing.
These tumultuous emotions sat in J'onn for so long. The way he wanted to go and help them both, but the fear of association and social punishment for merely being seen with his brothers made him cry when he younger for being so weak willed. It wasn't until their parents bragged about the sacrifice their forgotten child had made, the sone they purposely scorned made him snap.
"J'onn, promise to keep my message alive for me. Help our people become whole again."
"Of course, brother." Is what J'onn tells him as he watches his little brother vanish again for a third and final time.

What was the point of establishing M'gann as a martian that struggles shapeshifting into male characters when in the very episode that concept was introduced, M'gann turns into Red Tornado. And no- "oh he's a robot therefore genderless" like Red Tornado is revealed to have siblings, which includes a sister who has a feminine form.
and in Season 2, M'gann impersonates J'onn's martian and human forms no problem?? What was the point honestly.
#ramblings#jesncin watches YJa#the concept of M'gann struggling shapeshifting into men/boys is and always will be stupid#I feel it's male cishet writers feeling uncomfortable that an attractive girly can turn into a guy#“is every boy who dated M'gann gay now??” yes that's h'ronmeer's rules

Don't ask how it's the FENTONS, that explains all.
DC or Marvel + DP
When Danny was born, he was very weak, and they weren't sure he would survive. So Maddie, driven by a parent's instinct, resorted to unconventional means involving mythogical entities to ensure her child's well-being.
She summoned an entity, an otherworldly being, who, in turn, modified Danny's DNA. But he said he would be a hero in his name in the future. + It could be H'ronmeer, the Martian God of Fire, Rao, a demon, a god, Mamaragan, or even Black Adam. Or of Marvel comics, Odin, Hela, Mephisto, Bastet, Cyttorak, Shuma-Gorath, Skrull God, a Fear Lord, or for comedy, Gorr.
Don't ask how. It's the FENTONS; that explains it all. + Years Later As she and Jack years later see Danny's Danny Phantom form, they are like," You aren't a ghost; it's that demon, god, something we summoned as you were a baby fault. You just got powers from your 3rd parents." Danny was just shocked as he looked at his parents. They attributed Danny's extraordinary abilities to the mystical being they had summoned during his infancy, not the Ghost Portal! I mean, the ghost calls him halfa; he is half-ghost!

Plucked from the H'ronmeer scoured plains of Ma'aleca'andra by the unholy electric hand of Dr. Saul Erdel's Robotic Brain, J'onn J'onzz would forever be haunted by Erdel's final, dying thought; an alien being's first and final measure of them in all the brilliant splendor of shattered, kaleidoscopic space-time:
"It's an angel."

[ tonight we're thinking about the fact that J'onn and Ma'al's parents named them "Light to the Light" and "Heart of Darkness" respectively, which like. Granted there are Massive differences between my Ma’alefa’ak and canon, and mine's existence is literally a cursed "blessing" from H'ronmeer. But maybe naming your kid that is going to start them on a not great path- ]

E136: The Marvels
The Marvels
First off, and this may be controversial but...non American Batsons? I'm split between Canada or England.
Billy Batson and Mary Bromfield are twins, like Pre-Flashpoint, anointed as co-champions by the Wizard Shazam (Not Mamaragan, he's his own character).
Also, Handaqi heritage for both of them.
The power is halved when they're both transformed, but they can DBZ style combine into Captain Thunder, who's more powerful than either one at full power.
They're both called Captain Marvel, both they're nicknamed Lord and Lady Marvel when operating as one.
Freddy Freeman is blonde, but his transformed state (once he's loaned out the power of course) looks just like Elvis. This further divides the Shazam power into thirds, and further increases Captain Thunder's power.
There is a greater age gap between these three and Pedro, Eugene, and Darla.
This might be a controversial opinion, but I like Billy's Darkseid War re-power, so at some point he ends up with that powerset (S'ivaa, H'ronmeer, Anapel, Zonuz, Ate & Mamaragan) while Mary gets another goddess focused powerset from the Amazons, and the original SHAZAM powerset is distributed between Uncle Dudley and the remaining Vasquez household children.

All of Mars' buildings and infrastructure were alive and organic. After H'ronmeer's Curse burned everyone and J'onn came to earth all that was left on the surface was the barren desert the Mars Rover is now exploring.

There’s an alien. AN ALIEN! ON EARTH! Okay, calm yourself Danny. You need to greet them, help them familiarize with the planet if they aren’t. Ask them if they need help getting back to their planet if they need it.
He was giddy with excitement. Danny prepared with his notebook, full of questions he would ask aliens if he ever meets one (he made it when he was really small but kept adding to it as he grew up), takes a deep breath before teleporting to where the alien could be.
And once he gets there, he immediately drops his fanboying. There is no distress. There is no confusion. There isn’t any fear or apprehension over being anywhere new.
Instead, Danny focused on two transparent beings behind them - an adult and a child. The child had their arms wrapped around the alien’s middle, concern written all over their face.
The adult ghost alien only stood at an arm’s distance, hands folded together, but their mouth pursed together in worry.
More and more transparent beings seemed to appear behind the alien, all the same people as them.
And their thoughts melded together as one, different pitches saying the same phrase even without their mouths moving, “Please help him.”
Right now, Danny isn’t Danny. He is The Ghost King. Lifting his right hand, he places it over his chest. And he releases his thoughts of promise-safety-home. Soft light glows over the ghosts, and the people behind the alien disappears. Then the one who is most likely the alien’s spouse smiles and fades with the light as well.
The child lingers a bit more, still wrapping themselves around their parent, unwilling to let go.
Danny smiles. Stay, he conveys. Watch. They will be okay.
The child nods, but never lets go.
That’s alright.
Danny looks to the alien and decides it’s time to drop his transparency towards the living. The notebook is completely forgotten, thrown back to his room via portal. He appears before the alien, and with a smile and thoughts that are hopefully welcoming, he crosses his arms and floats casually in the air. “Hey,” he greets, “haven’t seen you around.”
Short DPXDC Prompts #341
Dr. Saul Erdel (Dude who brought Martian Manhunter to Earth. Died almost instantly after he saw Manhunter), tells the Ghost King of a strange alien that he managed to bring to earth. Danny needs to meet this alien.
#i don't know much about Martian Manhunter's origins and it shows! XD#But from what I've read and what I decided to cherry-pick: Martian Manhunter is the last of his species#He suspected that there was this plague or curse that was infecting the people#HE LOST HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER AND THEY DIED IN HIS ARMS AND HE STILL HAD TO GO AND BURN THE BODIES OF PEOPLE WHO WERE INFECTED AND#He became the last of his species and he was going to die too y'know? BUT THEN HE GOT TRANSPORTED TO EARTH VIA DR. SAUL#LIKE HE CARRIES SO MUCH TRAGEDY WITH HIM I JUST---#FUCK OFF BATMAN GO SEE A THERAPIST#THIS DUDE LITERALLY WATCHED HIS WHOLE RACE DIE#HIS FAMILY DIED IN HIS ARMS#HE WAS HELPLESS AND HE COULDN'T CONTROL WHAT WAS GOING ON#AND YET HE STAYED RESILIENT AND HELPED PROTECT EARTH#I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS#dc x dp#dp x dc#I'm sobbing y'all#oh wait i gotta say that i based what i know on the DC database and what it said on the H'ronmeer's Curse#okay imma go back to sobbing now#i know there are other iterations on Martian Manhunter's origins and stuff but still-- this one pulled my heart squeezed it#and threw it into a blender

AU where Jonn's memory wipe abilities are like they were in S1, where its basically all or nothing. And that when Lena finds out about Kara, she does her research about the Martian Manhunter and learns about said mindwipe abilities.... and asks him to wipe her memory.
"You misunderstand, Miss Luthor. My abilities aren't a chisel-- they're a sledgehammer. Attempting to remove one memory could erase all of them. It could alter your very personality."
"I'm willing to take that risk," Lena declares confidently.
"But I am not."
"You were willing to allow Supergirl to endanger my life for years without my knowledge," Lena reminds him. "All of you simply stood by and watched her make a fool of me-- every one of you is guilty."
Even J'onn has nothing to say to that.
"Each of you owes me, but I ask recompense only from you, Martian Manhunter. Do this, and your debt-- and that of your friends-- is paid."
J'onn still hesitates, but it's clear that he's beginning to cave. "It could leave you a blank slate..."
Lena scowls. "That's none of your concern. Remove my memories, plant the command to return home, and then I will no longer be your or anyone else's problem."
Finally, J'onn relents.
"Very well."
"One last condition," Lena insists. J'onn pauses, waiting for her to share. "You speak of this to no one."
J'onn grows wary once more. "Miss Luthor..."
"You've seen how powerful an ally I can be," Lena pushes. "You don't want me as your enemy."
Lena has certainly covered all of her bases.
"Swear to me your most unbreakable of vows that you will not, under any circumstance, share what has transpired between us tonight. Ever."
J'onn closes his eyes. It goes against everything he stands for, but he cannot dent the core facet of humanity-- the right of personal autonomy. If this is what Lena wishes, if this is what will wipe clean the slate... so be it.
"I swear, in the name of H'ronmeer, none shall know of tonight's events from me."
When the deed is done, the worst of J'onn's suspicions come to pass, and all of Lena's memories are erased. There's ample room in her mind to install the directive to return home and sleep, which Lena wordlessly does, as silent and as dead-eyed as a zombie.
When she wakes the next morning, she recognizes nothing around her. Not her apartment, not clothes, not her reflection. Nothing.
But she hasn't been left entirely helpless. On her kitchen counter, she finds an overlarge binder filled to bursting with paper.
It's a book reminiscent of The Rook, and the events that follow is a series of events not unlike Myfanwy's tale, with a web of past personal anecdotes about growing up with the Luthors interspersed among her notes of how to be the Lena Luthor past-Lena wishes she was, with a pair of heavily underlined imperatives:
DO NOT TRUST KARA DANVERS.
DO NOT TRUST SUPERGIRL.

Supergirl SG-1
Kara: I had to take the dog to the vet. Alex: You don’t have a dog. Me: Oh yeah, my Supergirl / Stargate SG-1 crossover fic...
Basically most things in both Stargate SG-1 and Supergirl are canon in this crossover, except the DEO replaces the NID in the Stargate universe.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“Wormhole X-treme is real?”
As Alex snickers at Winn’s surprise, J’onn thinks to himself that he really should’ve known that Winn had watched that ridiculous show. He doesn’t bother reining Alex in as she begins to tease Winn. His next words will turn the tables anyway.
“Alex, General Carter will be arriving within the hour. I’d like you to be her liaison.”
As expected, Alex splutters. “I--” She points at herself as words seemed to fail her. “I’m meeting General Ca--” She swallows and tries again. “General Carter as in General Samantha Carter of Stargate Command, one of the founding members of SG-1?”
“Unless you’re too nervous”, Kara teases, clearly relishing the opportunity to get back at her sister for teasing her for her pre-meeting President Marsdin jitters.
“What? No! Me? Nervous?” Alex protests in a futile attempt to play it cool before letting her genuine feelings come to the fore. “Yes, yes, I’m nervous. She’s so badass and so smart. She blew up a sun. How many people can say they’ve blown up a sun? I’ve never blown up a sun. Even Supergirl hasn’t blown up a sun. She’s so cool,” Alex concludes almost dreamily.
J’onn holds back a sigh--H'ronmeer help him if Alex also asks if she should get a blow out--and says, “I trust you will handle this with appropriate poise?”
“What? Pssh,” Alex says with a nervous laugh. “I got this.”
When General Carter and her group arrive, it takes Alex some time to “get this”.
Watching her around General Carter is truly something, and J’onn has to step in before Alex can give her slack-jawed, starstruck introduction of, “Hi, General Danvers, I’m Agent Carter.”
Luckily, Alex’s hero worship takes a backseat when the science discussion comes around, and J’onn can leave her to it.
…
“While Agent Danvers fills Sam--” Cassandra Fraiser stops to correct herself. “--General Carter in on the scientific side of things, I’d like to talk to you about the more human side--” Fraiser stops again with a wry smile. “--wrong terminology, about the more personal side of things.”
Cassandra Fraiser is one of the civilians working with Stargate Command. She doesn’t look that much older than Kara, and apparently her specific role is helping settle displaced aliens on other habitable planets.
The case that she’s currently handling is somewhat similar to Kara’s. A race of aliens from a red sun orbiting planet are facing a crisis and need relocation. Preliminary tests have shown that if they move to a yellow sun orbiting planet, which they’re likely to, they may begin exhibiting lower levels of powers similar to Supergirl’s.
Hence coming to Supergirl and the DEO for help.
“I appreciate that you’re coming to me for help with adjusting to new powers,” Kara says, “but your priority should be helping them face the trauma of losing their planet.”
“That part I’ve got,” Fraiser answers easily. “It’s the new superpowers part that I’d like to understand better if we’re going to help them deal with it.”
Kara leans forward. “No, you don’t understand. Losing their world is, it’s beyond devastating.”
The wry smile returns to Fraiser’s face. “And I’m saying this as a fellow alien who is the last of my people, that part I understand.”
Kara observes Fraiser more carefully now and asks, “You’re an alien?”
Fraiser nods. “I’m from a planet called Hanka. My people were slaughtered by one of the Goa’uld System Lords. I was twelve when Sam and her team brought me to Earth.”
“I’m sorry,” Kara says, and she means it. No one looking at her would assume she is an alien, much less one shouldering such an emotional weight. Now she’s gone and assumed the same of Fraiser.
“I’m sorry about your planet too,” Fraiser offers. Then she bows her head as if embarrassed. “I actually have you to thank for me being here. I saw you on the news, and I-- I struggled a lot to adjust on this planet. It felt like death kept following me, so I kept running. Seeing you out there, knowing how much you’ve been through and how much you’re still willing to give, it inspired me.”
“I’m glad you seem to have found your calling. I’m sure you’re great at it,” Kara says, truly glad to have found another kindred spirit.
This time Fraiser blushes. “Not sure about that. This is actually my first case.”
“Oh, well, I’m sure you will be great at it then,” Kara says confidently. Then she switches gears, which Fraiser seems grateful for, “So based on what you said earlier, I guess you didn’t have to deal with new superpowers when you got here?”
“Not unless you count growing a bomb in my chest,” Fraiser responds casually. At Kara’s aghast look, she adds, “Long story and thankfully not a recurring thing.” Then she remembers, “Actually, when I was a teenager I developed magnetic powers, but they almost killed me, and that’s also a long story. At this point, all I’ve got is that I can sense Naquadah and theoretically use Goa’uld devices.”
Kara finds herself wanting to hear all the stories but tells herself that now isn’t the time. Instead she says, “We never encountered the Goa’uld on Krypton.”
“They never really expanded that far outside the Milky Way galaxy. Nasty snakes. Good riddance.” Fraiser shudders. After a moment of quiet reminiscence, she suddenly perks up. “Oh, good thing about coming to Earth though: getting a dog.”
That also causes Kara to perk up. “You got a dog?”
“It’s an Earth rule. Every kid has to have a dog.”
“What?!”
…
“These are the sun grenades that I mentioned,” Alex says as she holds one out to General Carter for closer inspection.
Now that she’s calmed down, interacting with General Carter isn’t that intimidating, and as long as she concentrates on science, her mind doesn’t get the chance to freak out.
“These are fascinating,” General Carter says, and Alex smiles at the compliment.
“I figured that we can bring some to their home planet,” Alex says, referring to the aliens in need of relocation. “We can set one off in a controlled setting and see how they react.”
Before General Carter can respond, Kara storms into the room, Cassandra Fraiser close behind.
“Why didn’t I get a dog?” Kara demands.
As Alex turns around, it takes her brain a while to register what Kara said. “What?”
“When I came to Earth, why didn’t I get a dog?” Kara repeats. “It’s an Earth rule. Every kid has to have a dog.”
“What?” Now Alex feels even more confused. “That’s not a thing.”
She seems to be the only one who doesn’t know what’s going on because General Carter and Cassandra Fraiser are both smiling knowingly.
“It’s not an Earth thing. It’s a General O’Neill thing,” General Carter explains.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t really clarify things for Alex, but it does a semi-decent job of placating Kara. Despite the pout, she settles against one of the lab benches. “Well it should be an Earth thing.”
“Even I didn’t get a dog,” Alex points out. “Besides, you had Streaky.”
Kara crosses her arms. “Doesn’t mean I couldn’t have had a dog too.”
…
“Do you want me to come along?” General Carter asks Cassandra Fraiser in the gateroom as she double checks the younger woman’s gear. “I can ask Walter to clear my meetings.”
Alex perks up at that, almost salivating at the prospect of seeing General Carter in action. She and Kara will be the only DEO members joining the Stargate Command contingent, but J’onn has come to see them off.
“No,” Fraiser responds immediately, and Alex deflates. “Stop worrying. And I thought Jack was bad.”
“Yes, well, speaking of,” General Carter says with an amused smile. "Please don’t use any of his diplomacy techniques.”
Fraiser rolls her eyes. “Oh, sure, I’ll just stick with Daniel’s. He only dies every few years.”
J’onn holds back a snort. He’s seen the file of one Dr. Daniel Jackson, and that is not a hyperbole.
“Not helping,” General Carter says.
“You brought Teal’c out of retirement to go with me. I’ll be fine.”
As if on cue, a large black man--no, another alien, J’onn corrects himself, a Jaffa--enters the gateroom. “I give you my word that no harm will come to Cassandra Fraiser.”
“I have no doubt,” General Carter says as she hugs Teal’c.
“J’onn J’onzz,” J’onn introduces himself to Teal’c. “I hear you’re a PI now,”
“Indeed,” Teal’c says, tilting his head as they shake hands.
“If you have time after the mission, I’d love to hear more about it,” J’onn says. He’s brought the DEO a long way, but he’s been weighing his options for some time now.
“It would be my pleasure.”
As the team walks up the ramp, General Carter and J’onn say at the same time, “Be careful.”
Alex, Kara, and Fraiser all exchange exasperated looks.
“We will.”

I just wanna say there is so much cool stuff being put out by DC that has nothing to do with BWL Shazam! has been incredible or the Terrifics! Martian Manhunter frames H'ronmeer's Curse to be an allegory for the AIDs crisis. The art in the current Doom Patrol just blows me away each time. The BWL has to be the most overrated leftover of DC Metal (which is not as cynical as people say) the totality storyline is so powerful and hopeful in current JL. BWL just makes DC money and should be ignored
Thanks.
Yes, after a long hiatus, I’ve gone back to picking up DC books... Doom Patrol, Young Justice, Naomi, Wonder Twins, Jimmy Olson, Lost Lane, Aquaman and Legion... all pretty good stuff.
I haven't yet checked out Martian Manhunter, Terrifics or Shazam, but maybe I will next time I’m at the LCS.

History
Ma'alefa'ak was the architect of an extinction-level event, which has since become known as H'ronmeer's Curse. A plague of fire, this curse attacked Martians via their telepathic abilities. Whenever a Martian attempted to use their psionic gifts or commune with the Great Mind, they would fall victim to the Curse and ultimately burn to death. With the exception of Ma'alefa'ak's brother, J'onn and himself, nearly all Green Martians on the planet died as a result of Ma'alefa'ak's handiwork. For centuries, Ma'alefa'ak continued to live in the ruins of Mars, unaware that his brother had survived the plague, and had been transported through space and time to the planet Earth.
Several years ago, Ma'alefa'ak learned of J'onn's existence, and followed him to Earth in an effort to complete the genocide of the Martian race by destroying its last surviving son. The Martian Manhunter, however, foiled Ma'alefa'ak's efforts on several occasions.
During their earlier years, both Ma'Alefa'ak and J'onn underwent the ritual of G'amal'khul, in which each permanently exchanged a portion of their psyches with the other. Due to the ritual of G'amal'khul, the psychic remnant of Ma'alefa'ak living within J'onn J'onzz's mind managed to bury the similar remnants of his brother's wife and daughter. This fragment of Ma'alefa'ak then tormented his brother with twisted false memories of his life on Earth, his own persistent mental manifestation, and urges to drive the Martian Manhunter to suicide. The gambit briefly succeeded in sublimating J'onn's conscious self, allowing Ma'alefa'ak control of his physical body. But what this manifestation of Ma'alefa'ak did not count on was J'onn finally relocated his wife and daughter within himself, who assisted him in reasserting his psyche. This, combined with with the minds of the JLA, obliterated Ma'alefa'ak on the psychic plane.

[ also woke up this morning thinking so hard about the Twins. J'onn has met Actual, Literal, Straight Up H'ronmeer at least once in comics canon iirc, and I Know in translating that over to my telling he asked about Ma'alefa'ak- and learned that while H'ronmeer is in fact responsible for Ma'al's existence and he was meant to bring about a massive upheaval for all life on Mars, he wasn't born to bring the apocalypse but the misinterpretation of the prophecy and ensuing prejudice resulted in EXACTLY THAT. ]
[ Also thinking about Ma'alefa'ak's horrifying (for Martians) relationship with fire and affinity for it. And how there's no one alive- then or now- who could guide him through learning to control it. He's a very genuine danger to his twin and their niece, the only blood-family the three of them have left, and is liable to seriously hurt them whether he wants to or not if they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. ]
[ Also also toying with the idea of like. Giving Ma'al one (1) psychic-ish ability in mediumship per H'ronmeer's divinity over the dead and death itself. I'm thinking it would be closely tied to his fire abilities- giving contacted spirits semi-physical form made of flames- and just as difficult to control, leading to some very awkward moments. ]
